Lion in Crimean safari park filmed cuddling with tourists, weeks after woman hurt by different lion there

oleg safari

Tourists at the Taigan Safari Park in Crimea had a personal encounter with a lion when it climbed into their buggy and began nuzzling and licking them.

The owner of the park in Ukraine, 50-year-old Oleg Zubkov, was driving the park's open-air buggy when the incident happened.

In a video uploaded on Canadian news website CTV News on Thursday (Sept 6), Mr Zubkov strokes the lion's face briefly before it climbs into the vehicle.

It then climbs over his back and sprawls on the front seat, trying to nuzzle the woman in the passenger seat.

Mr Zubkov and the female passenger both exit the buggy as the lion is too big.

The lion then leaps to the back seats of the buggy, nuzzling and rubbing its head against tourists as they film it with their phones.

As the lion licks a tourist's face, Mr Zubkov says: "Those who do not want to film closer can go out."

However, the tourist responds: "No, we want to."

The lions at the safari park are known to be friendly with humans, with Mr Zubkov encouraging an up-close-and-personal experience with the big cats.

In 2016, a Russian photographer captured photos of the lions at the park playing with visitors, accepting kisses from them, and even sitting still for wefies.

The Daily Mail reported that Mr Zubkov, who is a conservationist, said that he hoped the photographs would help discourage people from hunting Siberian tigers and white lions, which are endangered.

There are more than 50 lions at the safari park, which is the biggest lion park in Europe. Approximately 1,500 other animals and birds also reside there, including tigers.

However, not all encounters with the big cats have been friendly.

Just eight weeks earlier in July, 46-year-old tourist Olga Solomina was attacked by another lion at the same park.

According to the Daily Mail, Ms Solomina said: "(The lion) bit through my right arm and used it to drag me - like a puppet.

"When it happened, right at the moment of the incident, I actually said goodbye to my life. I thought I was to be torn apart."

Mr Zubkov claimed that Ms Solomina had drunk alcohol before entering the enclosure, and had been ruffling the lion's mane before she was bitten.

He added: "She wasn't pulled forcefully into the park. She knew this was a dangerous site. She was given health and safety instructions and entered voluntarily... Still, I am ready to answer for my park before court."

Some believe such close contact between animals and humans is not a good idea. In an interview with BBC about an unrelated zoo, naturalist Claudio Bertonatti said there were two main reasons why being close to a wild animal is risky.

First, there is a risk of diseases being transmitted from visitors to animals, or vice versa.

Second, visitors' safety is also at risk.

"Who says any of these animals - be it a tiger, a lion or an elephant - won't attack a person?" he said.

The Taigan Safari Park has also drawn criticism online. In July, Captive Wildlife Watchdog, a Facebook page that aims to change "the way humanity perceives and values wild and captive wild animals", said in a post: "The dignity of these majestic beasts (at Taigan Safari park) has been stripped away, reducing them to mere commodities."

TAIGAN SAFARI PARK RUSSIA The dignity of these majestic beasts has been stripped away reducing them to mere commodities... Posted by Captive Wildlife Watchdog on  Friday, July 6, 2018

In 2014, the lions at the park were affected by the economic chaos following Russia's annexation of Crimea.

Mr Zubkov told BBC News that the animals at the park consumed a total of about 500kg of meat a day.

However, he had been unable to afford to restock the park's dwindling supplies of meat for its animals as Ukrainian banks had blocked the park's bank accounts.

A woman was reportedly mauled by a lion after entering its enclosure to pose for photographs with the big cat.

Olga Solomina, 46, is thought to have been attacked by the animal during a visit to Taigan safari park in Crimea , Ukraine.

The tourist, who dreamed of travelling to Africa to take in the wildlife, instead settled for a trip to the park, which offers a “walk with the lions” experience for 6,000 roubles (£72).

Speaking to local news outlets, Ms Solomina said she was offered the chance to step into an enclosure and take pictures with one of the animals.

However, moments after a photograph of her was snapped crouching next to a seemingly-docile lion, the predator clamped its jaw down on her arm and began to drag her.

She was only saved when the director of the safari park, Oleg Zubkov, was able to chase the big cat away.

“The lion grabbed my right hand and dragged me along the ground. I just had time to close my eyes. I thought that now they would tear me apart,” Ms Solomina told TV channel Crimea 24 .

“It dragged me like a doll. It was, of course, seconds, but to me they seemed like an eternity. At this time I said goodbye to life.”

She escaped the ordeal with only minor injuries to her arm and has since been discharged from hospital .

Zoo director Mr Zubkov said there had not been a similar incident in the seven years the park had been operating the tour.

He claimed Ms Solomina had broken security rules by being drunk at the time of the incident and he had offered to pay her medical bills after she had demanded compensation.

“Unfortunately, the woman, in my opinion, was slightly drunk,” he told Russian newspaper Komsomolskaya Pravda .

“Neither I nor the administrator noticed this before the excursion. It was only during the safari I saw that she began to behave inappropriately - pulling the lion by the mane and so on.

“Olga did not immediately want to go to the hospital. During the treatment of the wound she asked for cognac instead of an anaesthetic.”

Taigan safari park has endured controversy in the past, when the body of worker Maxim Yakovlev was discovered at the zoo covered in serious wounds.

Mr Yakovlev's family have insisted the 29-year-old was mauled to death by a tiger at the park, a claim the owners deny.

A Lion Casually Climbed All Over A Bunch Of Stunned Tourists After Hopping Into Their Vehicle

Just act...cool?

Jason Wells

BuzzFeed News Reporter

Everyone, this is Filya, a 2-year-old lion at the Taigan Safari Park in Crimea who...really likes to say hi.

oleg safari

According to the Associated Press , Filya was just taking a nap at the wildlife park earlier this summer when a open-air vehicle with a load of tourists motored up.

And Filya wanted to say hi...to everyone. "Hi, driver guy!"

"oh haiii, passenger lady can i sit here thanks.", "oh hello, look, more hoomans".

The driver of the vehicle, park owner and so-called lion whisperer Oleg Zubkov, was eventually squeezed out as he monitored the encounter. It looked like it was either terrifying or amazing, depending on where you stand with coming face-to-face with large predators.

Obviously, for these tourists, it was more on the side of awesome — and Instagram content.

The video of the tourists getting lion-bombed only recently went viral after it was released by the park, and you can watch it in all its glory here:.

CBS News @CBSNews WATCH: Giant lion climbs straight into safari vehicle in Crimea, giving a group of tourists the shock of their lives 05:00 PM - 05 Sep 2018 Reply Retweet Favorite

Taigan Safari Park is known for offering visitors close-up views of its lions that often include physical interactions, but it can sometimes go south.

About two months before Filya's interaction was filmed, another woman, Olga Solomina, was reportedly mauled by a different lion while she was inside an enclosure with it.

Solomina told TV channel Crimea 24 , “The lion grabbed my right hand and dragged me along the ground. I just had time to close my eyes."

She was rescued by the park's staff and escaped with only minor injuries to her arm.

Lion climbs into safari vehicle in Crimea, shocking tourists inside

By Danielle Garrand

September 5, 2018 / 11:31 PM EDT / CBS News

People head to safari parks to get up close and personal with animals usually seen only in photos. But, these tourists got a bit too close to a lion when it climbed right into their safari vehicle.

A video released by Taigan Safari Park in Vilnohirsk, Crimea, shows the surprising moment a lion hops into an open-air safari vehicle with tourists.

The footage shows the lion named Filya climbing over people sitting in rows in the car and then licking them, reports APTN. The lion even appeared to attempt to cuddle with the tourists in the vehicle.

Some can be seen taking photos with selfie sticks and laughing, while one woman appeared to be frightened and hops out of the car.

The man in the green shirt driving the vehicle is the park owner, Oleg Zubkov, known as the "lion whisperer," according to the  Daily Mail .

The moment occurred eight weeks after a woman said she was attacked by a different lion named Vitya in the Taigan Safari Park, according to the Daily Mail.  Olga Solomina, said Vitya "bit through my right arm and used it to drag me - it like a puppet."

The park is famous for offering tourists very close interactions with the giant cats.

Russian zookeeper kidnaps animals from Kherson, Ukraine says

oleg safari

Russia’s military has gained a reputation for looting its way across Ukraine, taking washing machines, electronics, cultural artifacts and even the bones of the lover of Empress Catherine II. But the latest theft — including seven raccoons, two female wolves, peacocks, a llama and a donkey from Kherson Zoo — entered the realm of farce.

A private Crimean zoo, Taigan Lion Park, owned by Oleg Zubkov, filmed him inexpertly grabbing raccoons by their tails and dumping them into cages in a YouTube video headlined “We are in Kherson. Oleg Zubkov catches raccoons with BARE HANDS!!!”

The video, which was made unavailable Sunday, showed him with two assistants, manhandling the llama into a dilapidated, windowless van as a dog yapped nearby. Another video uploaded Sunday showed two wolves that he said were from Kherson Zoo being unloaded at the Crimean zoo as two Russian television channels filmed the event. He called it “temporary evacuation.”

“It will be much better for the wolves here: large territory, Crimean sun, and besides, after the quarantine, they will get a male,” Zubkov said. “It’s been their dream to live here,” he claimed in comments to Russian media on YouTube.

He said the animals, including any wolf cubs, would be sent back after Russia reoccupies Kherson.

“For us this is a humanitarian mission. These animals do not have any zoological value for us. We have our own wolves. We have 75 raccoons. We could make canned raccoon meat,” he said before guffawing, in what appeared to be an awkward joke. “Sorry. But seriously we have a lot of raccoons, but we took these animals to keep them alive and so that residents of Kherson would be happy to see them alive again. The animals are in good hands.”

Ukraine’s Defense Ministry posted one of the videos and warned of reprisal for the raccoon theft.

The occupiers stole everything from Kherson: paintings from art galleries, antiquities from museums, historic manuscripts from libraries. But their most prized loot was a raccoon they stole from a zoo. Steal a raccoon and Die. pic.twitter.com/1mqBrrKjHQ — Defense of Ukraine (@DefenceU) November 13, 2022

Ukrainian troops retook the strategic southern city last week after a Russian retreat. Kherson was one of the first major cities to fall to the Kremlin’s full-scale invasion that began in February. The liberation was greeted with celebration in the streets after months of Russian occupation.

The removal of the animals was widely reported in Russian media, portrayed as a small bright spot in an otherwise gloomy picture. It came to light when nationalist Russian poet and blogger Anna Dolgareva boasted on Telegram that the “only good news” about Moscow’s surrender of Kherson was that her friend managed to “steal a raccoon” from Kherson Zoo.

“We will not return the raccoon,” Dolgareva said. “We will get back Kherson.”

She said a raccoon Telegram channel, Raccoon from Kherson, had been set up.

Ukrainian animal activist Oleksander Todorchuk confirmed the report on Facebook.

Zubkov, who calls himself Lion Man, was convicted of negligence after one of his tigers bit off the finger of a 1-year-old boy in September2021. He was given a prison sentence of two years and three months, and served two months. An occupation court canceled the sentence Oct. 27 and freed him shortly after, provided that he did not leave the area. Zubkov said the Kremlin’s designated leader in Crimea, Sergei Aksyonov, intervened to ensure that he could travel to Kherson to take the animals.

Last month, Russia’s designated administration leader in Kherson, Vladimir Saldo, said that Russia had taken the bones of Grigory Potemkin from his tomb in Kherson. Potemkin, an 18th century Russian military figure, annexed Crimea, founded the city, governed Russia’s imperial lands in the region and created the Black Sea Fleet. He was also renowned as the lover and close protege of Empress Catherine II, who was known as Catherine the Great.

Loss of Kherson city shatters Putin’s war goals in Ukraine

Ukrainian officials have accused Russia of removing disabled children from Kherson to Crimea and Russia, as well as taking away prisoners of war. Local independent media channels aired video of buses, fire engines, construction equipment and even a miniature train with its carriages for children — all being driven out of Kherson in the days before Moscow surrendered the city.

Kherson’s Kremlin-appointed administration also removed hundreds of valuable artworks and icons from the Kherson Art Museum, emptying the gallery from Oct 31. to Nov. 3, and taking the works, wrapped in rags and packed in unmarked vans, to Crimea before the Russian surrender of Kherson, according to museum staff in a Facebook post on Nov. 4.

“They call it ‘evacuation.’ In our language it’s ‘looting,’ ” the post said. The works later showed up in the Central Museum of Tavrida in the Crimean city of Simferopol. Kherson police announced a criminal investigation into the theft of the works, though they are focused on stabilizing the recently retaken city.

Police also reported that Russian forces had stolen four official cars of a medical center, hospital computer equipment, medicines, civilians’ cars, boats and hunting weapons.

Ukrainian officials have accused Russia of looting or damaging hundreds of Ukrainian cultural institutions during the war.

Russian forces also mined buildings and blew up a television tower, communications towers and bridges in central Kherson, according to Ukrainian officials. Local media reported witnesses who said they saw Russians removing building materials, furniture and household appliances from Kherson.
