News Release

P&o cruises updates covid-19 travel requirements.

P&O Cruises today (August 12, 2022) announced updated Covid-19 protocols and guidelines, with adjusted pre-travel testing requirements.

From Tuesday September 6, 2022 self-testing prior to travel will change from “mandatory” to “highly recommended” for vaccinated guests on the vast majority of holidays.

Only guests sailing on longer, more complex itineraries will be required to have an observed or in person antigen or PCR test with a fit to travel certificate prior to departure. These include a number of holidays of 16 nights or more and other specific cruises.

These new guidelines apply to all P&O Cruises itineraries sailing from Southampton and all other departure points with the exception of countries where government regulations and protocols may vary including Australia.

The vaccination policy for P&O Cruises guests remains the same and full details can be found at:

Preparing to sail | P&O Cruises (pocruises.com)

P&O Cruises president Paul Ludlow said: “These updated protocols reflect the current environment across the world and while certain key elements have relaxed, our commitment to protect the health and wellbeing of all guests, crew and the communities we visit remains an ongoing and vital consideration.

“They also ensure that the ease of cruising remains at the fore and that all guests of all ages can enjoy a holiday with unrivalled dining, relaxation and exploration options and unmatched service levels at extraordinary value for money.”

Exact requirements will be communicated to all guests in due course with the latest updates on www.pocruises.com from early September.

All the updated guidelines and protocols are subject to local regulations of applicable homeports and destinations.

P&O to require passengers and crew to be vaccinated against COVID-19 when cruising returns in Australia

P&O Cruises Australia announced its 'vaccination only policy' on Friday, with guests and crew needing to be vaccinated against COVID-19 in order to board vessels.

Vaccine passports will be 'worth doing'

P&O has outlined its plans to restart cruising operations in Australia, revealing guests and crew will have to be vaccinated against COVID-19 in order to board vessels.

The company announced its 'vaccination only policy' on Friday, with Sture Myrmell, President of P&O Cruises Australia, saying the cruise line was keen "to do our bit to get this country back up and running again".

"Governments have been connecting vaccination rates to plans to end lockdowns, border restrictions and, ultimately, reopening Australia," he said.

"In addition, our research shows that the vast majority of our guests want to cruise with other vaccinated Australians.

"P&O's vaccination policy is an indication that everything possible is being done to support the resumption of cruising in a way that provides further reassurance for our guests and the authorities that public health and wellbeing are our top priority."

National plan ensures Australia can reopen with ‘confidence’

The company is keen to have travellers back on its vessels and is eyeing domestic operations as the first step in restarting the cruising industry in Australia.

"We expect that P&O's vaccination only policy for guests and crew would provide further reassurance for local authorities in working with the sector in developing protocols for resuming domestic cruise holidays," Mr Myrmell said.

"We anticipate this policy will be in place until governments and public health authorities advise the broader community it has achieved the required public health outcomes and/or provides direction on public health management in the post-vaccination phase."

Foreign-flagged cruise ships have been banned from entering Australian waters since March 27, 2020.

The cruise ship ban is currently in place until September 17 but is likely to be extended, with Australia's international border remaining closed until vaccine targets are achieved.

No decision has been made on a restart date for domestic cruising.

Every Cruise Line's Requirements for COVID Vaccines, Testing

A guide to every major cruise line's health requirements for safe sailing.

p&o cruises australia covid requirements

Cruise lines have shifted their requirements for passengers, making cruising accessible to practically everyone. Many popular cruise lines have eliminated the vaccine and pre-embarkation test as the industry is beginning to shift away from mandatory vaccines and testing.

The changes began shortly after the CDC ended a pandemic-era policy of publicly displaying COVID-19 cases onboard, different cruise lines to the public in July 2022. For those looking to check current COVID-19 trends onboard the CDC urges direct contact with the cruise line, and the organization will continue to monitor and offer guidelines to ships.

Below, we break down each line's list of regulations to sail as well as what travelers need to know to plan.

This page is for Australians preparing to travel overseas. If you're already travelling and need help, see our information on what to do when things go wrong .

Carefully consider the risks of international travel before you book. Ensure you understand the local risks and requirements before you make a final decision.

Taking care of your health

Infectious diseases can spread quickly onboard cruises. You're more at risk of exposure than in other settings due to the large number of passengers living and socialising in close quarters over a long period.

You could fall seriously ill if you're exposed to an infectious disease, and the cost of your medical care could exceed your travel budget. If you need medical help on a cruise, you may need to pay your medical bills immediately. In serious cases, you may need to pay for medical evacuation from your ship. It's important to ensure you have access to emergency funds if needed. The Australian Government won't pay your medical bills.

When you're planning for your cruise, think about the following:

  • Health checks and vaccinations. Before you go, get a health check and any vaccinations your doctor recommends. It reduces your risk of getting infected or developing severe disease.
  • Pre-existing conditions. You're more likely to need medical assistance overseas if you have a pre-existing medical condition. Talk to your doctor about your cruise plans before you commit.
  • Medications . If you take medication, pack enough to see you through any potential delays. Learn more about travelling with medications .
  • Personal hygiene. Infectious diseases like COVID-19, influenza and gastroenteritis are common on cruise ships. Practice good personal hygiene while you're away. Learn more about preventing infectious diseases . Pack masks and hand sanitiser.

If you get sick

If you fall ill while on a cruise, you'll usually be treated in the medical facilities on board. If it's too serious to treat on board, they may transfer you to a hospital at the next port or medically evacuate you while in transit.

Standards on board may not be as good as in Australia. Talk to your cruise operator about facilities and costs on board.

COVID-19 and cruising

COVID-19 remains a global health risk. Carefully consider the risks of international travel before you book.

If an outbreak of COVID-19 happens while on a cruise, your ship may be prevented from docking. You may have to quarantine on board. Local authorities may restrict consular access if your ship is quarantined, limiting the services we can provide.

Read the travel advice for your ports of call . Ensure you understand the local risks and requirements before you make a final decision.

Read more general advice on how to take care of your health .

Cruise-specific travel insurance

Insurance policies don't always cover cruises. Make sure you choose a travel insurance policy that covers you for cruising and any activities you do on shore. Some cruise ships won't even allow you to board without cruise-specific insurance.

There are some things you should consider before choosing your insurance:

  • Your onshore destination. Make sure you're covered. Check the advice level . If it's level 3 or 4, your policy may exclude that destination.
  • Australian waters . If your cruise isn't leaving Australian waters, you still need travel insurance for your health. You may be unable to claim Medicare or private health insurance on the ship. Check before you go if your ship has a Medicare-accessible doctor on board.
  • Your planned activities. Your insurance needs to cover your onshore activities and shore excursions. Adventure activities may not have the same safety standards as Australia.
  • Medical evacuations . Make sure you're covered for medical evacuation at sea. The cost of medically evacuating a patient from a cruise ship by helicopter can be in the $100,000s.

No matter how healthy and fit you are, if you can't afford travel insurance, you can't afford to travel. The Australian Government won't pay for your medical expenses overseas or medical evacuation costs.

Learn how to choose the right cover for cruises. Read the travel insurance buyers guide  and CHOICE advice on which travel insurers cover cruises .

Passports and visas

Before you go, organise your passport and any visas you'll need.

  • Pack your passport. If you're entering a foreign country's waters, you may be asked to show it, even if you don't plan to disembark in the country. Learn more about passports.
  • Get your visas for all destinations. Check visa requirements with your cruise operator or holiday provider well before your planned departure. Learn more about visas .

Severe weather and tsunami risks

Most cruise lines will have processes in place for severe weather.

It can cause rough seas and impact your itinerary. They may reroute the ship if the weather event is too dangerous to navigate safely. Follow the instructions of the ship's crew and put your safety first.

  • Check the weather. Know what to expect. Especially if you're travelling somewhere that experiences cyclones.
  • Know what to do in a crisis. This includes severe weather and tsunamis .

Staying safe on board

Treat your personal safety and security on a cruise ship the way you would in any other travel destination.

  • Reduce the risk of theft. It only takes one thief to ruin your trip by stealing your things when you're not looking. Lock your cabin door, use the safe for valuables and stay alert on board. See more about theft and robbery .
  • Party safely. Many cruise liners are famous for their bars, nightclubs and cocktails by the pool. Take the same precautions as you would onshore. Don't swim while drunk. Don't do drugs. Know your limits, watch for spiking and take care of others. See more about partying safely .
  • Prevent assault. Socialise safely with strangers and look out for your mates. See our advice on reducing the risk of assault and sexual assault .

Read more advice about staying safe and avoiding danger.

Shore visits

Shore visits are a highlight of any cruise. Just be mindful that the risks in each destination can be unique.

  • Research the destination. Know the safety and health risks there. Read the travel advisory for the destination .
  • Protect your passport. Unless the local law says you must have it on you at all times, keep it on the boat in your room's safe. Always protect your passport.
  • Protect your property. Professional thieves target passengers on shore visits who let their guard down. Especially passengers who look like inexperienced travellers. Protect yourself from theft .
  • Look after your health. Research the activity you plan to do. Find out if it commonly leads to particular health problems, especially injuries. Find out if you can get medical assistance while onshore.
  • Wear safety gear. Riding bikes, scooters, and other adventure activities are popular extras for cruise passengers. Always wear the correct safety gear for your activity. Also, make sure your insurance covers you for it. Just in case things go wrong.

Piracy and conflict

Piracy is a risk in some parts of the world. Ask the cruise company about their security measures if you're going through a piracy-prone area. Find out about their policies and procedures in the event of a pirate attack.

Conflict in the countries surrounding your cruise route can make traversing the waters more dangerous. Be aware of current events in the region you're cruising through. Ask your cruise company if there are any safety concerns. They may reroute your cruise if the risks are too high.

Worst case scenario

Cruises have policies for what happens if a passenger dies on board.

We strongly advise you to have travel insurance that covers death and repatriation of your remains. It often costs 1000s of dollars.

If you die, the cruise line won't pay for these services. Neither will the Australian Government. It will be your estate or your loved ones that get stuck with the bill.

Learn more about what happens if you die overseas .

Where to get help

On your cruise liner, your first port of call for help is the crew. You can also get help from:

  • ship's security
  • ship's doctor
  • travel companions
  • your travel insurer.

If you're onshore:

  • the tour guide
  • local authorities
  • local hospital

The Australian Government

In some circumstances, consular officials may be able to help. However, there are limits.

It's important you understand our limits and how and when we can help. Read the Consular Services Charter .

  • See the travel advisory for all your destinations , including shore visits and territorial waters. Know what each advice level means.
  • Also see our advice for travelling by boat .
  • Learn about piracy , terrorism and kidnapping .
  • See what to do if you need help while you're away.
  • See the list of Australian embassies and consulate overseas (DFAT)
  • Read the travel insurance buying guide , guide to planning a cruise trip and safety tips for cruise ship holidays (CHOICE).

Guests are required to wear a face mask that covers their nose and mouth (with no exemptions) in specific areas including the terminal, when moving around indoors on board and when seated in the theatre.

"Please note that visors and face shields aren’t accepted as a substitute for a face mask."

Do I need a COVID vaccine to cruise? A line-by-line guide

Ashley Kosciolek

When the first cruises allowing Americans restarted in spring 2021, all major lines were sailing with at least 90% of passengers vaccinated against COVID-19. That meant they required just about everyone on board to have their shots, with only a few exceptions allowed for young children and people who can't be vaccinated due to medical conditions or religious beliefs.

Since then, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has withdrawn its opt-in guidance for cruise lines, and most are now allowing unvaccinated passengers to sail. In fact, most aren't even checking to see if cruisers are vaccinated or not.

However, with cases picking up seasonally and new booster vaccines rolling out, will you need a vaccine to cruise? Click on your favorite cruise line above, under "Jump to Section," to find out.

For more cruise news, reviews and tips, sign up for TPG's new cruise newsletter .

Note: In order to be considered "fully vaccinated," passengers must have received their final shot (not including boosters) at least 15 days prior to embarkation. Most lines only accept vaccines (or a combination of vaccines) recognized and approved by the World Health Organization and the CDC. Generally, proof of inoculation must include your name, the type of vaccine you received and the dates on which you received all required doses.

Booster shots are not required unless specifically noted. However, keep in mind that the rules may vary by country, with some lines requiring boosters for international departures due to local regulations or for extra-long sailings like ocean crossings when port calls are few or nonexistent. Passengers who have their boosters are considered "up to date" rather than merely "fully vaccinated."

For general information on testing, please refer to our article on cruise testing requirements .

On expedition cruises with Hurtigruten , passengers are not required to show proof of vaccination, except on 2023 and 2024 voyages to Antarctica and the Northwest Passage or West Africa sailings departing from and returning to Dakar. Lindblad Expeditions

Lindblad passengers no longer need to provide proof of vaccination in order to cruise, and pre-cruise testing is no longer required, including at embarkation. VACCINES & VACCINE EXEMPTIONS (UPDATED 29 AUGUST 2023)

Carnival Cruise Line has welcomed the decision to lift all government mandated COVID restrictions for guests in Australia. These changes will be effective immediately across all Carnival Cruise Line operations.

Although vaccines are not required, we encourage all guests, 5 years of age and older, to be up to date with their COVID-19 vaccines, when eligible, and carry proof of vaccination.

Australian public health authorities also strongly recommend all cruise ship guests receive an annual influenza vaccination at least two weeks before the start of their cruise.

health screening

ENHANCED HEALTH SCREENINGS

At embarkation: We will refer anyone with signs and symptoms of illness, or who are identified at-risk, for additional medical screening before allowing them to board. Guests will be seen by medical personnel and boarding will be approved at their discretion.

Any guest who is denied boarding by medical personnel will not be able to cruise and are recommended to seek reimbursement through their Travel Insurance provider.

During the cruise: Secondary screenings (and health checks throughout the cruise) will be performed, if necessary, at the cost of the guest.

We have implemented a comprehensive set of protocols with the best interests of the health and safety of our guests, crew, and the destinations we serve as our number one priority. Even with our multi-layered protocols in place, there may be infectious illness cases during your cruise. Our ships' medical centres have capabilities for diagnosis and testing. It is important that you are aware of the following information:

Any guests exhibiting symptoms of illness are encouraged to go to our medical centre. Guests who are diagnosed with contagious illnesses may be required to move to an isolation stateroom until our medical team determines if it is safe to resume cruise activities.

onboard

HEALTHY ONBOARD ENVIRONMENT

Please help us maintain a healthy onboard environment by using the hand-washing sinks and hand sanitiser dispensers at venue entrances and in high-traffic areas throughout the ship. We will also need guests to follow our guidance about the ways to stay healthy onboard and when ashore, through daily programming, entertainment systems, announcements, in-stateroom literature, and the Carnival HUB App.

masks physical distancing

MASKS AND PHYSICAL DISTANCING

Masks are not required on board during your cruise. However, we recommend guests wear masks in public indoor spaces, outdoors when in large congregate events if they’re feeling unwell or exhibiting symptoms of illness.

destination requirements

GOING ASHORE

In Australia, all guests, irrespective of vaccination status, may go ashore to enjoy a Carnival tour or independent sightseeing.

We will be following the health protocols for every port we visit, which are under the control of local authorities and subject to change without prior notice. All guests, regardless of vaccination status, must come prepared to follow local guidance pertaining to mask wearing, physical distancing, testing/health screenings, etc. Since destination health protocols continue to evolve, the most up-to-date information will be provided in a stateroom advisory.

Itinerary Adjustments

Should it be necessary to cancel any or multiple ports, we will do our best to find alternative destinations. However, if we are unsuccessful in doing so, there will be no compensation for missed ports, beyond a refund of any pre-purchased Carnival shore excursions.

Travel Insurance

We strongly recommend you purchase comprehensive international travel insurance that has cruise coverage. Certain ports of call may impose a requirement that you hold travel insurance if you are medically disembarked from the ship. International medical and repatriation costs can be high and are outside the scope of Australian Medicare.

NOTE: For cruises to the South Pacific that visits New Caledonia (Noumea or Lifou):

Passport Requirements

A passport is mandatory for all guests (including infants) for this voyage. Passports must be valid for at least 6 months after the cruise ends.

Visa Requirements

Depending on your nationality, specific travel documentation may be required to enter Fiji, even if you remain on board during the visit. Citizens of Australia, New Zealand, U.S.A, and most other countries do not require a Fijian visa. Please contact the appropriate embassy or consulate for Fiji to determine if your nationality requires one.

Mandatory Travel Insurance

To comply with destination requirements, all guests must present proof of medical travel insurance coverage for the duration of the voyage at time of check-in. The plan must include coverage for cruise, medical emergencies, repatriations, etc.

While we will do our best to provide you with as much information as possible, you should always ensure that you follow all travel and documentation requirements for this cruise. Unfortunately, guests who do not have the required documentation will not be able to sail and no compensation will be provided.

COVID-19 FAQS

Do i need a covid-19 vaccination to sail, do i have to take a covid-19 test before my cruise.

Testing is not required for either vaccinated or unvaccinated guests. However, we encourage all guests, 5 years and older, to take a pre-cruise COVID-19 test within three days of their cruise.

What if I test positive to COVID-19 within 5 days prior to sailing?

If you test positive within 5 days prior to your cruise departure, you will not be able to travel and you should notify us or your travel agent as soon as possible so we can cancel your booking. In addition, if you are experiencing COVID-19 symptoms at embarkation, you will be asked to complete a health screen and if you test positive to COVID-19, you will be denied boarding.

If you have a valid travel insurance policy, please submit a claim with your insurance provider.

In the event that your claim is denied, please contact [email protected] with your booking details and any relevant documentation, including a letter of denial from your insurance provider. Claims are reviewed on a case-by-case scenario, and there is no guarantee of reimbursement.

What happens if during my cruise I have COVID-19 or test positive?

Any guest reporting or exhibiting COVID-19 symptoms should notify our onboard medical staff and be tested for COVID-19.  Anyone who tests positive for COVID-19 should isolate for at least 5 days and until they are symptom free for 24 hours.

How are you maintaining a healthy onboard environment?

The health and wellbeing of our guests is our top priority. Carnival Cruise Line ships are equipped with hand sanitisation stations, and crew members may remind you to wash or sanitize your hands upon entering food service areas. Public areas and staterooms are subject to rigorous cleaning processes; and we have also enhanced our ventilation systems to allow for frequent exchanges of fresh ocean air and modified for greater particle filtration.

Do I need travel insurance to sail?

Please note, International travel insurance is recommended on Carnival Cruise Line cruises, as your cruise is outside the scope of Australian Medicare. Medical service fees will apply to onboard Covid-19 testing and treatment.

How do we mitigate and manage COVID-19 cases on board?

We have consulted with leading medical experts to create an extensive response plan for mitigating and managing COVID-19 cases on our ships, and have also made arrangements with local port, health and transportation authorities to support our ships should it become necessary.

We have enhanced our shipboard medical capabilities with the necessary staffing, medications, supplies, oxygen, equipment and procedures to triage and treat multiple COVID-19 cases across the full clinical spectrum including intensive care. Our highly experienced doctors and nurses are up to date on the latest COVID-19 scientific status and trained on all relevant COVID-19 procedures.

In addition to our onboard Medical Centres, our shoreside Health Operations Centre is staffed 24/7 by our team of dedicated medical and public health professionals. Other measures in place include, but not limited to:

  • COVID-19 viral testing capabilities, including PCR;
  • Detailed quarantine management plan including isolation staterooms for COVID-19 positive cases, as well as isolation ward and beds in the medical centre;
  • Enhanced cleaning and sanitising, including guest rooms and public areas;
  • Onboard signage and regular communication to guests about COVID-safe practices; and,
  • Regular monitoring of disease activity and health regulations in the destinations we visit so we can adjust our cruise itineraries as necessary.

You should always ensure you understand all requirements to travel from your home country and the destinations you plan to visit. Details continue to be updated regularly and official websites and apps developed by government departments & agencies, and tourism ministries are the recommended resources, including:

  • Safe Travel

Any guests exhibiting symptoms of illness are encouraged to go to our medical centre. Guests who are diagnosed with contagious illnesses may be required to move to an isolation stateroom until our medical team determines if it is safe to resume cruise activities.

What health care is available on board and how do I access it?

Each ship has a dedicated team of medical staff operating the onboard medical centre to serve the general health care needs for guests and crew. Our highly experienced doctors and nurses are up to date on the latest COVID-19 scientific status and trained in relevant COVID-19 procedures. We have also enhanced our shipboard medical capabilities in terms of staffing, medications, supplies, oxygen, equipment and procedures to triage and treat multiple COVID-19 cases across the full clinical spectrum including intensive care.

You can contact the medical centre using the phone in your room to request non-urgent appointments. This avoids congregation of patients in the medical centre and allows the medical staff to pre-determine the best location for the consultation, including your room.

Whenever possible, anyone suspected of COVID-19 will be assessed and treated in their room with all medical first responders wearing full PPE. Medical staff will arrange safe transfer of any unwell individuals to the ship's Medical Centre if additional treatment is required that cannot be provided in the guest's room. All cruises on our ships are outside the scope of Australian Medicare, New Zealand Accident Compensation Corporation and private health insurance.

What is the cost of onboard health care?

For cruises to or from Australia, there is a medical facility onboard where guests can have an initial consultation and COVID-19 related testing at their expense. Different policies may apply in other jurisdictions.

Non-COVID-19 related medical consultations, treatment and medication will be charged at private rates, and must be paid for by the guest and should be claimed on guest's international travel insurance. All cruises on our ships are outside the scope of Australian Medicare, New Zealand Accident Compensation Corporation and private health insurance.

What happens if my medical needs cannot be supported on board and I need to be transported off the ship?

While our onboard Medical Centres are equipped to handle many medical conditions, including COVID-19, there may be occasions where it becomes necessary to disembark or evacuate a guest to receive further essential medical treatment. To ensure guest safety, this decision will be made by the onboard doctor and the captain, in coordination with the relevant port and health authorities. Depending on medical water vessel or road ambulance, or a combination of these. Guests will be responsible for the costs of any evacuation required to treat COVID-19.

Our CareTeam will provide support to any guest who requires medical evacuation, along with their family and travel party.

What are the disembarkation arrangements for guests who test positive and close contacts?

Guests who are in isolation, or a close contact, will be disembarked in a controlled manner, separate from other guests. Isolation arrangements can vary by country/region. For guests disembarked in Australia:

  • If a guest is well enough to travel home, they can proceed with their plans to return home.
  • If a guest is unwell and requires ongoing medical treatment, we will make the necessary arrangements to transfer them to a local hospital or medical facility. If the guest does not require medical attention and prefers to stay locally until they recover, Carnival will assist in making arrangements however the guest will be responsible for any expenses.

Our CareTeam will provide assistance and support, as required, to guests who test positive to COVID-19 during their cruise, their families and any close contacts, to ensure they arrive home safely.

I have an existing medical condition. Can I still cruise?

We recommend guests seek advice from their medical practitioner about their condition and any possible risk associated with cruise travel. If you are travelling with a specific medical requirement, please let us know at the time of booking as we may require you to complete a medical questionnaire prior to travel.

Guests who use oxygen (concentrators or tanks) and those who are undergoing dialysis are welcome to travel on cruises 7 days or less, but please let us know at the time of booking.

Unfortunately, we are currently unable to welcome guests on board cruises of 8 nights or longer who are dependent on supplemental oxygen tanks or who are undergoing haemodialysis. Our medical experts have determined that, for the guests own safety, this is the right decision. We remain optimistic that our approach on future departures will become more flexible.

Do I need travel insurance?

We strongly recommend you purchase comprehensive international travel insurance that has both cruise and COVID coverage. Certain ports of call may impose a requirement that you hold travel insurance if you are medically disembarked from the ship. International medical and repatriation costs can be high and are outside the scope of Australian Medicare.

Please note, International travel insurance is recommended on Carnival Cruise Line cruises, as your cruise is outside the scope of Australian Medicare. Medical service fees will apply to onboard COVID-19 testing and treatment.

Will the cruise itinerary be altered if there are COVID-19 cases on board?

Our cruise itineraries are never guaranteed and may be altered for various reasons. In the event of COVID-19 cases on board, depending on the level of transmission and perceived risk by local port and health authorities, we may not be permitted to visit certain destinations included in the cruise itinerary.

How will guests be advised of COVID-19 positive cases and level of transmission on board?

If there are a small number of controlled cases, only close contacts will be notified by the onboard medical staff. When there is a potential risk of ongoing COVID-19 transmission, guests will be advised, as required by health authorities. Communication may include onboard announcements, letters to guest rooms and additional information in the Carnival Hub App.

Do guests need to be aware of and comply with Government entry requirements when returning from an international cruise, or when visiting the countries included in the itinerary?

Guests arriving on a cruise that has transited international ports are responsible for ensuring they meet local government entry requirements. Failure to do so may result in denial of boarding, being issued a fine, deportation or the ship being denied entry.

Guests are also responsible for ensuring they meet the entry requirements of the countries included in their itinerary, including any vaccination requirements.

Details continue to be updated regularly and official websites and apps developed by government departments & agencies, and tourism ministries are the recommended resources, including:

Indicates external site which may or may not meet accessibility guidelines. Opens in a new window.

What if a guest fails to comply with the required health protocols during their cruise?

Anyone who doesn't comply with the onboard public health measures may be disembarked at the first available opportunity. Other consequences could include being denied service, required isolation in their room and being banned from cruising with Carnival Cruise Line and other Carnival Corporation and plc brands in future.

For any guest who is non-compliant, no refund will be issued of the cruise fare for missed cruise days, nor will travel expenses (if flying home) be covered.

If the travel party of a guest who is non-compliant is impacted and they are required or voluntarily choose to disembark with them, the same policies will apply to travel party: no refund of cruise fare for missed cruise days or coverage of travel expenses home.

What are the implications for guests travelling from overseas to join a cruise departing from Australia?

We strongly recommend guests obtain appropriate international travel insurance which may cover costs associated with changes to travel arrangements. Also, it is a condition of entry into some countries that guests hold specific travel insurance. It is your responsibility to inform yourself about what insurance you are required to hold and carry proof of any coverage. Guests travelling from overseas should also ensure their travel insurance provides cover for COVID-19 related medical care. If ongoing medical treatment is required after disembarkation, any associated costs will be incurred by the guest.

How will a COVID-19 outbreak on board be managed?

We have a COVID-19 response management plan covering varying levels of risk determined by the number of positive COVID-19 cases, clusters and close contacts.

In the unlikely event there is an outbreak of COVID-19 on board which is considered to be higher risk, all non-essential services will be suspended, and guests who are not isolating will be asked to minimise their movements around the ship and remain in their room as much as possible or utilise outdoor areas while maintaining physical distancing. Masks will also be required to be worn by guests at all times when outside their rooms, except while consuming food & drinks. The ship may still call at destinations for the provisioning of essential stores, subject to local health and port authority approvals, however shore visits will be suspended. In consultation with relevant health and port authorities, arrangements may be made to shorten the cruise and return to the closest suitable port to safely disembark all guests

Where an outbreak is considered to be moderate risk, some services may be modified or suspended in order to mitigate the risk, as outlined in Question 21.

Enhanced cleaning and sanitisation will be implemented in all areas, and hand washing or sanitiser use will be enforced at all food outlets and restaurants.

Guests will be kept informed onboard of any COVID-19 outbreak and any changes to the situation and what this means, including any changes to onboard health protocols. In addition, guests due to board the next cruise after a COVID-19 outbreak of moderate to higher risk has occurred will be informed of this prior to boarding.

Will activities be cancelled if there is a COVID-19 outbreak?

Where an outbreak is considered to be moderate risk, some activities and services may be modified or suspended in order to mitigate the risk, which may include:

  • Reduced capacity in dining venues and lounges, with extended hours to facilitate physical distancing;
  • Suspension of dining events, such as Chef's table;
  • Walk-up bar service suspended, and only table service will be provided;
  • Modification or suspensions of Kids Club centre and procedures and activities;
  • Modification of entertainment, activities and shows, which may include reduced capacity, suspension, venue changes, shortening shows to increase frequency;
  • Closure of waterslides;
  • Reduced capacity in onboard shops;
  • Reduced capacity in the gym, with masks required to be worn at all times and increased sanitising; and
  • Closure of self-serve guest laundries.

During a moderate level outbreak, where we are still permitted to call at a destination as determine by the local health and port authorities, some shore tours may need to be modified or cancelled.

In the unlikely event there is an outbreak of COVID-19 on board which is considered to be higher risk, all non-essential services will be suspended.

Where cruise lines stand on tests and vaccinations

The return of cruises has had many jumping for joy, but with each cruise line adhering to different COVID-19 protocols, booking a cruise can be terribly confusing.

There is still a lot of uncertainty surrounding what rules apply to cruise ships after the tight restrictions during the pandemic .

“The cruise industries have seen a slower return to normal since the pandemic, but are definitely making a comeback,” Dr Jan Jones of the University of New Haven’s hospitality and tourism department told Condé Nast Traveller . “Cruisers have been patiently waiting and there is pent-up demand. The slow return was impacted by low consumer confidence, continued health and safety concerns, and issues with air travel to and from ports.”

According to the Australia’s Department of Health , as of July 2022, travellers to and from Australia no longer need to provide evidence of their COVID-19 vaccination status, though travellers are encouraged to be vaccinated for their own protection.

But the department warns that cruise operators may have specific requirements for their passengers, and must also meet any requirements of the state or territory they are operating in – meaning it’s best to check the requirements of your cruise operator and the states and/or territories and countries in which you will be travelling.

We’ve rounded up the cruise lines that have adjusted their approach to COVID-19 in a post-pandemic world.

Azamara does not require a negative COVID-19 test prior to boarding unless this is required by local country regulations (those embarking from Australia, however, require testing).

They also highly recommend that guests take a COVID-19 test prior to starting their travels. Azamara will provide a complimentary test for their pre-cruise land program or hotel stay guests prior to embarkation.

Carnival Cruises

Vaccinated cruises are available for guests 12 years and older, who have received their final dose of an approved COVID-19 vaccine at least 14 days prior to the sailing day (not counting embarkation day) and have proof of vaccination.

Celebrity Cruises

All guests ages 12 and older must be fully vaccinated to sail, and while COVID-19 booster vaccine shots are not currently required to sail, they are highly recommended.

Guests are considered fully vaccinated against COVID-19 if 2 weeks have passed since their second dose in a 2-dose series (such as Pfizer or Moderna vaccines); or, 2 weeks after a one dose series such as Johnson & Johnson’s Janssen vaccine. All guests must test negative for COVID-19 in order to board their sailing.

Vaccination or COVID recovery certificate are required for all guests ages 12 and above. Vaccination boosters after the elapse of nine months (270 days) is required for all guests ages 18 and above, as well as a COVID-19 Antigen Rapid test or PCR test for all guests ages 12 and above. Self-tests are not accepted.

Disney Cruise Line

Starting September 2, 2022, for voyages from the United States and Canadian ports, Disney Cruise Line requires that all vaccine-eligible guests (ages 12 and older) be fully vaccinated in order to cruise, including children.

Unvaccinated children five to 11 years old will no longer need the vaccine to sail, though cruises that visit Australia, Canada, and Greece must still have passengers test before setting sail.

Holland America Line

It is highly recommended that guests are fully vaccinated and boosted (if eligible) at time of sailing.

To find out what vaccine and testing requirements apply to your voyage, click here . Enhanced testing and vaccine requirements may apply to certain itineraries, so it is important that guests check the requirements for their specific booking by using the link above.

MSC Cruises

All guests embarking are strongly encouraged, but not required, to be fully vaccinated against COVID-19. For vaccinated guests, it’s not required (but strongly recommended) to present a negative test.

Unvaccinated guests, guests without a vaccine certificate, or guests who have recovered from COVID-19, ages 5 and older are required to present a negative COVID-19 RT-PCR or Antigen test taken 48 hours prior to embarkation. Tests must be laboratory certified – a rapid antigen self-test is not valid for travel purposes.

Norwegian Cruise Line

Beginning October 4, 2022, Norwegian Cruise Line will drop all vaccination requirements on its global sailings, making them the first major cruise line to announce it will discontinue requirements for all guests.

NCL will continue to follow the travel requirements of the destinations it visits, as some countries require a negative test for vaccinated and unvaccinated passengers 12 and older, or a certificate of recovery.

Oceania Cruises

Fully vaccinated travellers aged 12 and older will not need to test to embark, but unvaccinated travellers will need to present a negative, medically administered covid-19 test. Antigen and PCR test results may not be more than 72 hours old at the time of boarding.

Travellers aged 11 and under are not subject to any cruise line vaccination requirements or testing protocols. Fully Vaccinated travellers must meet the generally-accepted definition of “fully vaccinated” based on the destination they are embarking and/or travelling to and must provide proof of vaccination.

Travellers who cannot provide proof of vaccination will be able to travel but subject to any required testing protocols.

P&O Cruises Australia

Prior to boarding, guests will complete a health declaration which includes verification that they do not have COVID symptoms. All guests 12 years and older are required to be fully vaccinated with a TGA-approved or recognised vaccine. It is strongly recommended that eligible children under 12 years of age are also fully vaccinated.

Minimum 95% of guests must be fully vaccinated on each P&O Cruises departure.

Guests must also declare their vaccination status at the time of booking and provide proof of vaccination status before boarding.

new caledonia

Princess Cruises

Guests must have received their final dose of an authorised COVID-19 vaccine at least 14 days before the beginning of the cruise and provide acceptable proof at terminal check-in. Boosters are highly recommended for those eligible at least seven days before cruising.

At terminal check-in, guests must attest to a negative viral COVID-19 test (PCR or rapid antigen) taken before embarkation.

Regent Seven Seas Cruises

Fully vaccinated guests are not required to test prior to embarkation. Unvaccinated guests may embark with evidence of a negative COVID-19 PCR or Antigen test from a registered test provider taken within 3 days prior to embarkation.

Royal Caribbean

All Royal Caribbean guests departing from Australia must be fully vaccinated against COVID-19 with the final dose administered at least 14 days before sailing. Children aged 11 and under do not require COVID-19 vaccination to cruise, however it is highly recommended.

As part of Australian Federal and State Government guidelines for cruising, at least 95% of guests must be fully vaccinated for COVID-19. Children aged 11 and under, and guests with a valid medical exemption are permitted to travel – however, there is a limit on the number of unvaccinated guests that can travel on each cruise departure.

For most cruises under 16 nights, fully vaccinated guests will no longer need to submit a pre-cruise COVID-19 test, and unvaccinated guests will only need to submit a self-administered test taken within three days of sailing.

The protocols do not apply to itineraries for countries where local regulations may vary including Canada, Australia, and Greece.

Before you cruise, check their  Enhanced Protocol Lookup  to find out if your voyage requires additional health regulation requirements.

All embarking crew , and all guests aged 12 years and older, must be fully vaccinated against COVID-19 at least two weeks prior to embarkation.

Only guests with vaccines approved by the WHO will be permitted to board. A copy of the vaccination certificate must be uploaded to the guest’s ‘My Silversea’ in advance of their travels, in addition to showing their vaccination certificate or printed copy during the check-in and embarkation process.

Virgin Voyages

Negative COVID-19 tests are required for unvaccinated Sailors, however, they may require tests for a number of reasons including recovery cases within 90 days.

Australia COVID Regulations for Cruise Ships Will Soon Go Away

Picture of Andrea Santillan

  • August 25, 2023

Since 2022, most countries around the world have relaxed their COVID-19 regulations. Though Australia remained an exception, it looks like New South Wales (NSW) is getting ready to let go of the pandemic-related requirements it imposed on the cruise industry.

P&O Cruises Australia pacific explorer sydney australia

The news comes straight from NSW Premier Chris Minns, who announced that regulations, such as wearing a mask, getting tested, and receiving appropriate vaccinations before boarding, will be removed. On April 17, 2022, the Commonwealth of Australia lifted its ban on cruise ships but put certain health measures into place.

“These protocols were important at the time to get the cruising industry going again after COVID. They were never meant to remain forever,” he explained to Cruise Passenger Magazine .

Upon reviewing the guidelines, the Communicable Diseases Network of Australia (CDNA) established that vaccinations were an issue among families reluctant to vaccinate their children against the virus.

The Cruise Lines International Association (CLIA) likewise approved the move to dispense the additional health protocols. It cited that several hundred thousand Australians have since joined cruises without experiencing threats to their health.

The trade association also mentioned that removing the guidelines “will bring Australia into line with other jurisdictions worldwide.”

Cruise company Virgin Voyages expressed its support. With several of its itineraries featuring Australian ports of call, Chief Brand Officer Nathan Rosenberg was enthusiastic at the prospect. “We thank the Premier for his decision on the removal of these regulations. We encourage the remaining states to follow suit as soon as they can, given the high levels of interest to cruise by Australians and the contribution it makes to the economy nationally,” he stated.

Several people who heard the news echoed the sentiment. “Finally! It is embarrassing how long Australia held onto these restrictions,” wrote Mark Ryan. On Facebook, users chimed in with comments like “Long overdue” and “About time.”

Other Australian jurisdictions are expected to follow suit when the NSW government discontinues COVID-19 protocols. Already, anticipation has built among cruise lines and hopeful passengers.

P&O CRUISES AUSTRALIA WELCOMES DECISION TO REMOVE COVID GUIDELINES

Tuesday, August 29, 2023

P&O Cruises Australia has today welcomed the end of all government-imposed COVID-19 settings for cruise guests in Australia.

P&O will be implementing these changes effective immediately.

“As Australia’s favourite cruise line, we are delighted with this long-awaited news, which will end confusion for our guests and open up options for their summer holiday plans,” said SVP Guest Experience, P&O Cruises Australia, Peter Little.

“This brings the Australian cruise industry into line with the rest of world and means families from both Australia and overseas, will now be able to book their cruise holidays with confidence,” said Mr Little.

P&O has nearly 90 sailings across their fleet of 3 ships this summer, departing from Sydney, Brisbane, Melbourne, Perth, Adelaide and Auckland. There’s never been an easier or more affordable way to take an exciting summer family break or a better time to book ahead for a winter get-away.

The health and safety of our guests and crew remains a priority for P&O, with prevention and control protocols to be maintained on all our ships. P&O will continue working with the relevant health authorities into the future.

Covid vaccination mandates and mask rules will finally be ditched for passengers on cruise ships embarking from NSW ports, with Premier Chris Minns declaring: “We need to get life back to normal.”

Previously, passengers over the age of 12 had to be fully vaccinated prior to embarking on a cruise ship. Travellers also had to abide by enforced mask-wearing when embarking and disembarking and had to present a negative Covid test prior to departure.

On Monday, the NSW government announced it had formally signed paperwork that removed the rules from the Eastern Seaboard and Western Australian Cruise Protocols, which also covers travellers embarking from Victoria, Queensland and Western Australia.

Mr Minns said it was time to “get life back to normal”.

“We have scrapped these rules because they aren’t needed anymore,” he said.

“Passengers can take their own decisions to look after their health before and during a cruise.”

Tourism Minister John Graham thanked the industry for implementing the health protocols during the pandemic and welcomed the change before the summer holiday season.

“The 2023 winter cruise season in Sydney is on track to be one of the strongest on record and it is fantastic even more people can now participate,” he said.

“These protocols were important after Covid but were not intended to continue in perpetuity and I thank the sector for how they have handled the additional requirements placed upon them.”

While the remaining states have yet to formally rescind the rules, the federal health body has advocated for the removal of the Covid public health measures.

On Friday, the Australian Health Protection Principal Committee downgraded managing Covid-19 on cruise ships to bring measures in line with other communicable diseases and stated there was “no longer a need” for specific recommendations and guidance.

However, it said cruise ships remained a “higher risk setting for communicable disease,” like gastroenteritis, respiratory infections, the flu and Covid-19.

“These viral infections can be serious, particularly for people who are at higher risk of severe illness,” the statement said.

“The risk is higher on-board cruise ships than in the general community due to the high numbers of people mixing in relatively closed spaces and the typically longer duration of cruises compared to other transport.”

The father of two brothers killed on a surfing trip to Mexico has revealed a heartbreaking, six-word confession.

The Australian Transport Safety Bureau has revealed a disturbing incident that occurred on a late night shift at Brisbane’s Air Traffic Control Centre.

Aussies heading to Bali have been issued a new warning before boarding their flight, and will need to complete a new document before boarding.
