Busch Gardens in Tampa, Florida is known for its thrilling roller coasters. Now you can experience them from home.

2. Cedar Point (Sandusky, Ohio)

How do virtual field trips work?

Virtual field trips are a type of digital experience that enables students to explore different places, events, or experiences without having to physically leave their classrooms. These trips use technology to create an interactive and immersive learning environment.

Typically, in order to take part in a virtual field trip, you will need certain tech on hand:

• A computer and ideally as smart whiteboard in class. It’s best if students have their own tablets or computers. But this can be done with one large projector.
• Stable internet connection.

Most of these Virtual Field Trips are simply links to either the specific museums or locations offering a video of their facility or using Google Earth to explore a specific region such as our national parks. They are free to view at your convenience.

6 Free Resources for Virtual Field Trips

Teachers can use panoramic photos and videos of locations all around the world to make lessons more engaging.

How can you take students around the world without moving very far? If you haven’t yet, it’s worth trying virtual field trips and excursions. Now more than ever, these resources allow students to experience spaces they might not otherwise get to see, and there are many ways to introduce them to students as they explore a topic.

Virtual field trips can help students explore a new space, build vocabulary and background knowledge, and expand their world view. Whether you want to explore the setting of a novel, introduce a place-based math problem, or make connections to current events, virtual field trips can expand upon traditional lessons in many ways. One of the reasons I love them so much is that they allow students to view a space that piques their curiosity and provides context for their learning.

The term virtual field trip can be used to describe not just 360 degree photos and videos but also the live interactions and video conferences you might set up with a subject matter expert like an author or museum docent. Flipgrid (one of my favorite tools) hosts a handful of these types of virtual field trips .

6 Ways to Set Up Virtual Field Trips

The list of free virtual field trip resources here is adapted from my ISTE Live presentation in December 2020. Students can access these resources without logging into a new website—teachers can post the link to a 360 degree panoramic image or interactive experience in a platform students already use, making it easy for them to access in both traditional classroom settings and at home.

1. AirPano : This site includes 360 degree videos and images from around the world. You aren’t required to create an account—you can just jump in and start searching. When you’re ready to share with students, there is a link you can copy and paste or an embed option if you’re adding a widget to a site of resources. If you’re looking for international locations, AirPano is a great choice for exploring outdoor spaces, including Machu Picchu in the daytime, or the northern lights at night.

2. Google Maps Treks : In combination with Google Maps and Earth, Treks organizes content in an easy-to-navigate way. There are Treks for places around the globe, including the U.S. and Canada, Egypt, Nepal, and India. Each one has information and videos for students to explore.

3. National Geographic : National Geographic’s YouTube channel transports students all over the world to learn about different cultures, foods, animals, and more. Have students press play on the video, and as the video begins, they can use their cursor or trackpad to spin the video in different directions. They can tap on one part of the screen to move the video back and forth as they learn about a new place.

4. Nearpod : Known as an interactive presentation tool, Nearpod has virtual reality content built into its platform in the form of 360 degree panoramic views, which can be used as a great pre-reading strategy to introduce a new book or spark discussion about a social studies or science topic. To use these interactive experiences with your students, insert them into any Nearpod lesson in the same way you would add a slide or poll. (Please note: Nearpod also offers a paid plan with additional amenities.)

5. 360Cities : This collection of stock 360 degree images has lots of user-uploaded resources. There is a special school version that allows you to introduce students to more dynamic learning experiences; it has features such as a guided tour creator.

6. Google Arts and Culture :  This tool has a variety of high-quality content, including interactive views that let students walk through notable spaces such as museums and explore examples of beautiful architecture like the Alhambra in Spain. You can let students know that this resource is mobile-responsive in addition to working on a web browser—they can access the content on a smartphone or tablet, or their Chromebook or laptop.

Engaging Students With Guided Questions

Set a purpose for students as they explore these resources by using prompts to guide their excursions. Potential prompts include:

• What do you think the weather is like in this place?
• How do you think someone captured this moment?
• What might be missing from this shot?

If building student vocabulary is a primary goal of introducing virtual field trips to your students, you can point out different objects in the panoramic views or ask students to find certain features. For example, imagine students are learning about geological features and you take them on a virtual field trip to Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park. Together you can discuss vocabulary like crater , steam vent , and igneous rocks .

When sharing with students, include a prompt or question and post the link and task into a space they already have access to, such as Google Classroom, Seesaw, or Schoology. If you’re sharing a list of resources for students, colleagues, or families that includes some of these virtual excursions, you might curate a list of favorites using a tool like Google Sites, Spark Page, or Microsoft Sway.

For a fee, the zoo also offers virtual programs that enable private online encounters with animals. The website also hosts an online directory of zoo animals and plants so that virtual visitors can learn more about the zoo’s exhibits from home.

The San Antonio Zoo arranges online meetings between virtual visitors and animals like hippos, giraffes, and rhinos for $100. Virtual field trips are all the rage now.

As we find ourselves unable to travel, we seem to all find solace in remembering that our beautiful world is still out there and thankfully, technology is here to help.

In the last few days, my Facebook and Whatsapp feed has been filled with images, videos and news of virtual yours that would allow me to visit faraway places without leaving my house.

Through them, I have visited museums, seen panoramas from the top of towers I have never climbed and cough myself smiling at the antiques of penguins and koalas in aquariums and zoos around the world.

Most of these virtual tours are aimed at adults or at least, are more enjoyable for adults. However, I have also found many that my kids loved, and these are the ones I am sharing with you today 

I find them invaluable for this time at home but also as a trip planning tool .

How to use virtual field trips for kids

Virtual field trips are a wonderful form of entertainment and education for kids of all ages and they can also come in handy for planning a family trip.

You know when you plan a trip and you are just not sure if an attraction is suitable for kids (hello, Vatican Museums with kids , the most asked questions in my Italy family travel forum !)? 

Virtual tours can help : the tours are a wonderful way to get a sense of what a museum is like and can help you make an educated judgment about whether your specific child will be able to enjoy them or not. 

They can also help your child get excited about a place.

My daughter got excited about seeing Zion National Park months before we went thanks to a google earth tour and spent the time there squealing in delight for recognizing the places!

Also, you can use the tours as an aid to your homeschooling efforts, making places and concepts come to life and adding extra sensorial stimulation, a great way to make learning easier and the knowledge longer lasting.

Kids Virtual Field Trips of US National Parks

Yosemite np, california, usa.

Yosemite is the first National Park we visited with the kids and while nothing can compare with the majestic presence of its mountains, the virtual tour offered by the park itself is so good and the scenery so stunning, it is definitely worth watching.

Kenai Fjords, Alaska

We have never been to Alaska but all it took was a glance at the Kenai Fjords virtual tour to persuade me that this wonderful State needs to climb to the top of our travel list!

The virtual tour starts with a wonderful video to introduce the park and then follows a ranger who explains the most wonderful and interesting characteristics of the park and leads you on adventures.

Would you climb down a crevasse? With this tour, you can!

It is wonderful and the landscape is so beautiful and inspiring your kids will quickly forget they are home! It simply transports you there!

Hawaii Volcanoes, HI

I am sure my children are not the only ones intrigued by volcanoes and there is no better way to get acquainted with them than to go to the volcanos in Hawaii! 

The Hawaii Volcanos virtual tour is beautiful to watch but also full of information about volcanos that you can use not just to get excited about future travels but also on your earth science homeschooling lessons.

Carlsbad Caverns, NM

Adventurous kids will LOVE the virtual yous of the Carlsbad caverns.

Here you can not only see the caverns themselves, which are impressive (and scary, I am glad this is a virtual your only!) but you can also loo nat the world from a very special viewpoint: that of a bat!

Bryce Canyon virtual tour, UT

The virtual tour of Bryce Canyon got me emotional.

We were in Bryce last summer and it was such a wondrous, beautiful, inspiring place, I would have no hesitation hopping back on a 14-hour plane + car journey just to see t again!

Dry Tortugas, Fl

We haven’t been to Florida but if there is one thing that can persuade us to plan a trip, is this National Park!

It is very different from the others on this list as most of it is underwater!

You can follow rangers as they dive into the crystal clear Florida waters and learn and marvel at the corals underneath the surface.

This is a wonderful virtual field trip to kids who are fascinated by the sea especially.

The virtual field trips for kids above are actual virtual tours for children, created for them to explore the parks from home.

As such I have not found them for other parks however, google earth offers a good alternative. 

While not as educational or guided, you can visit 31 US national parks via google street view.

I am going to be honest, this is the one tour on this list I haven’t taken myself, part because it requires downloading an app (free) and part because I find the topic too harrowing right now.

However, the tour is award-winning and I believe will be of interest to older children, so I decided to include a link to it here

Smithsonian Museums, Washington

The fabulous Smithsonians have several free virtual tours kids will love. Check out the Smithsonian Natural History Museum virtual tour , the Museum of African American History and Culture and also have a peek a their Air and Space museum here

British Museum, London

The Brutish Museum is incredible in real life and so is its virtual tour!

One of the questions I receive most often, about my home city of Rome , is: can we go to the Vatican Museum with kids or are they just too big and too boring?

Trajan’s markets, Rome

I haven’t found a virtual tour of the main part of the Roman forum nor of the Colosseum, however, I have found one about a place that is at least as interesting: the underrates Trajan’s Markets in Rome!

The virtual tour is very well made and brings you right at the heart of this well-preserved part of the Imperial forum, right in the center of Rome. Access it here

Boston Childrem Museum virtual Tour

The Boston children musum also can be visited via google but it more a planning tool than an actual visit as the museum is meant for kids to touch and play!

Zoo virtual field trips and animal webcams from aquariums and wildlife parks

For little kids, you cannot beat a virtual field tri to the zoo or an acquarium!

We are living in a strange time. Never did I think that I would be searching for virtual field trips to take with my daughter and daycare children! But here we are, trying to make the best of the situation we are living in. 

Now you can experience landmarks and museums around the world with your kids from home! Check out our list of 40+ virtual field trips below. These are all interactive virtual tours that I have done with my kids. All kid-approved! 

I’ve spent the last two weeks putting together this list of virtual field trips for kids. These are all links that I have personally checked out with my daughter and daycare kids. 

Animal Virtual Field Trips

-Watch over 10 different animals, from Elephants to Butterflies, in their habitats at the San Diego Zoo with these Live Animal Cams ! We love the tiger cams! Plus they have a whole kids area on their website for fun educational activities. 

-Observe gorillas, rhinos, and even ants on the live webcams from the Houston Zoo . I love the 6 different animal cams at this zoo. Tune in between 7 am and 7 pm CST to see them in action.

– The Georgia Aquarium has some really amazing webcams you can check out. They have beluga whale webcams plus live feeds of the puffins, piranhas, gators and much more! Watch for the whale shark (!) on the Ocean Voyager cam! It’s so cool to see!

San Diego Zoo, USA

London Zoo, England

Cincinnati Zoo, USA

This is one of the oldest and most established zoos in the United States, with a collection of almost 2,000 animals.

They have taken their online tour to the next level, introducing the world to their beautiful animals through Facebook Live videos. Their Home Safari series highlights their conservation work. Tune in live, every day from 3pm.

Edinburgh Zoo

This Scottish zoo has set up live streams so little ones can watch animals like penguins, pandas, lions and tigers for free. If you time it right, you might even be able to see them at feeding time with the keepers.

While the experience is completely free, the zoo is accepting donations to help support the animals during the coronavirus pandemic.

Virtual tours for kids don't come more magical than Harry Potter's wizarding world! Using this amazing tool from Google Maps , you can explore all the places J.K Rowling's magic world was based on. See the London market that was the inspiration for Diagon Alley and the famous Platform 9 3/4 that whisked the witches and wizards off to Hogwarts.

While you might not be able to enjoy the treats of Honeyduke's sweet shop or jump on the Hogwarts Express, this tour is the closest thing to it!

Online tours of castles, landmarks and palaces

The Tower of London 

Getting tickets to the Tower of London over any school holiday normally requires queues of at least an hour. This time around though, it's not only free but there's no queuing needed!

Windsor Castle, England

Windsor Castle is the oldest occupied castle in the world! Although the Queen regularly spends her time here at the weekends, it's open to the public to come and have a look around.

Ever wanted to see inside the Queen’s royal residence?

Roman Baths, England

Take a dip into the Roman times with this walkthrough of the Roman baths in Bath. Their virtual tour really makes you feel like you’re there, as you walk through the entrance and by-pass the ticket office – straight into the centre of the site.
