15 Best Things to Do in Sedona, According to Locals

These are some of the best things to do in Sedona, whether it's your first or fifth time visiting the Arizona desert town.

Evie Carrick is a writer and editor who’s lived in five countries and visited well over 50. She now splits her time between Colorado and Paris, ensuring she doesn't have to live without skiing or L'As du Fallafel.

Sedona, Arizona, is home to nearly 10,000 people, and a spiritual haven for many more. The red rock buttes here are said to house mysterious cosmic forces that are conducive to healing and self-exploration. For that reason, Sedona has long been regarded as a sacred place — one that is rich in natural beauty.

Brett Briseno, director of sales and marketing for Enchantment Resort and Mii Amo, a Sedona hotel and spa, respectively, told Travel + Leisure by email, “There's something special here. Whether it’s the energy of the land, the genuine hospitality of its people, the cultures that coexist in harmony, or the world-class businesses, there's no denying this place feels ‘different’ than anywhere else. I would use the word majestic, but others might simply say there’s a positivity and peacefulness here that's rare in the world.”

That sense of peace and spirituality has made the Arizona community a spa destination. (The Enchantment Resort’s Mii Amo spa is a T+L reader favorite .) Briseno noted, “Sedona is one of the few locations where you return home feeling better and more energized.” The destination is also surrounded by red rock formations, steep canyons, and pine forests with hiking and biking trails.

Without further ado, here’s what Sedona locals recommend a first-time visitor should add to their itinerary.

Hike Cathedral Rock Trail.

According to Chrys Theriault, an expert bell captain at Ambiente, A Landscape Hotel (one of the most anticipated resort openings in the U.S. in 2023 ), “Sedona is known as a day hiking capital, with some 200 trails and 400 miles of well-marked red rock [paths] that offer any hiker the skill level and views they are seeking.”

A good place to start is on Cathedral Rock Trail , a moderately challenging, 1.2-mile round-trip trek. It’s a great introduction to Sedona hiking and boasts stunning views of Cathedral Rock, a natural sandstone butte that's one of the area’s most-photographed attractions.

Visit Chapel of the Holy Cross.

Ivey Redding/Travel + Leisure

The Chapel of the Holy Cross draws pilgrims and tourists who come to worship in this one-of-a-kind building that was built on top of a natural rock formation in the Coconino National Forest.

Theriault calls the chapel a personal favorite, while Christian Davies, the general manager of Mii Amo , said, “The Chapel of the Holy Cross is a must-see. The stunning building seamlessly flows with the surrounding area, rising out of the red rocks just like a prominent peak, offering stunning views of the iconic red rock formations that Sedona is famous for.”

Eat Mexican and Southwestern food at Elote Cafe.

With a menu that’s “inspired by the markets of Mexico,” Elote Cafe is based on chef Jeff Smedstad’s 20-plus years of travel across Mexico and the southwestern U.S. Don’t miss their namesake elote, fire-roasted corn served with spicy mayo, lime, and cotija cheese.

Swim in Oak Creek at Slide Rock State Park.

Kiyoshi Tanno/Getty Images

At the bottom of Oak Creek Canyon lies a swimming hole that has continually been recognized for its spectacular hidden locale. It's situated below an apple orchard and surrounded by Sedona’s iconic red rocks. There’s even an 80-foot-long “slide” that has been worn into the sandstone and is covered in algae, making for a slippery ride.

“When you think of Arizona, you don't think of water,” said Theriault, adding that a visit to the canyon is “a perfect trip any time of year.”

Shop at Tlaquepaque Arts & Shopping Village.

Called “the art and soul of Sedona,” this outdoor shopping village is fashioned after a traditional Mexican village, with stucco walls, cobble pathways, and decorative arches. The Tlaquepaque Arts & Shopping Village has some of the city’s best galleries, restaurants, and shops. And if you’re wondering, the word Tlaquepaque is part of the ancient language of the Aztecs , meaning the "best of everything."

Davies calls the market “one of the most distinctive shopping experiences in the Southwest,” noting that it “has been a favorite Sedona landmark for many years.”

Hike Airport Loop Trail.

The Airport Loop Trail , which curves around Sedona Airport, is a great spot to watch the sun rise and set. If an airport-adjacent hiking path sounds anything but pleasant, then you haven’t been to Sedona Airport, which is set 500 feet above the city on a flat mesa.

Visit Amitabha Stupa and Peace Park.

The 14 acres that make up the Amitabha Stupa and Peace Park were deemed holy by Natives long ago and continue to be seen as a spiritual oasis.

“Sedona is the spiritual mecca of the Southwest,” explained Theriault. “Historically known for its ceremonies, birthing spaces, and peace treaties, it now has a New Age vibe with holistic healing rituals, modern churches, and psychics.” Davies added, “Amitabha Stupa is a spiritual destination for people of all faiths, where local residents, visitors, and groups come for prayer, meditation, and an experience of peace in a sacred place.”

Bike the Aerie to Cockscomb Trail.

Together, the Aerie and Cockscomb trails create a 6.1-mile loop that's suitable for both beginner and intermediate mountain bikers. This trail is great because it offers fun descents on rolling hills and beautiful scenery, plus it can be accessed from many locations.

“Sedona is renowned for being one of the top mountain biking destinations in the United States,” said Davies, adding that Enchantment Resort and Mii Amo guests can also take advantage of the Trail House , which offers guided bike rides and rentals.

Book a hot-air balloon ride.

Both Davies and Theriault recommend that first-time visitors to Sedona book a hot-air balloon ride. “Sedona is known for the unique beauty of its red rocks and high desert foliage. A helicopter tour or balloon ride will allow any traveler a one-time, take-it-all-in view of Sedona. You'll even see the highest peak in the state, Mt. Humphrey's, as a bonus,” said Theriault.

Two reliable tour operators are Red Rock Balloon Adventures and Northern Light Balloon Expeditions .

Visit Red Rock State Park.

lucky-photographer/Getty Images

If you want to see a high concentration of Sedona's famous red rocks and canyons, head to Red Rock State Park , located southwest of the city. The nature preserve has tons of treks that loop around red rock formations, including Eagle's Nest and Apache Fire trails.

Hike Devil's Bridge Trail.

Westend61/Getty Images

This nearly four-mile round-trip hike leads to Devil’s Bridge, the largest natural sandstone arch in the area. The route can be busy, and parking is limited on weekends, so your best bet is to hop on one of the free shuttles to the Dry Creek Vista trailhead. The highlight of the hike is reaching the bridge and walking out along the top of the arch.

Book a Jeep tour or rent an off-road vehicle.

RAUL RODRIGUEZ/Getty Images

If hiking and biking aren't your style, but you still want to explore the landscape, Theriault recommends booking a Jeep trip with one of Sedona’s many tour operators.

If you’re feeling up to it, you can also rent your own Jeep or ATV and cruise one of Sedona’s many scenic roads. According to Theriault, Oak Creek Canyon, Red Rock Loop Road, and Scenic Byway SR 179 are “perfect for a day trip.”

Shop at Exposures International Gallery of Fine Art.

Courtesy of Exposures International Gallery of Fine Art

The art scene is one of the many reasons people travel from all over the world to visit Sedona. One of the city’s best art galleries, Exposures International Gallery of Fine Art , is a great place to start your tour of the destination's art offerings. Exposures represents the work of almost 100 living artists and includes both classical and modern paintings, sculptures, and jewelry.

Try to spot a UFO.

In addition to the occasional energy vortex, Sedona has “thousands of reported UFO sightings a year,” according to Theriault, who recommends first-time visitors join “a UFO tour with military-grade night vision, or take advantage of the designated Dark Sky Community by looking toward the stars at night.”

Dine on the water at Cress on Oak Creek.

Courtesy of L’Auberge de Sedona

If Sedona’s nature has you wooed, book a meal at Cress on Oak Creek in L’Auberge de Sedona ( one of T+L readers' favorite resorts in Arizona ). The restaurant’s outdoor patio is situated right on Oak Creek in a green-laden space.

Arguably the best hike in Sedona, as well as one of the hardest, the Sedona Windows is a must visit for those able bodied to make the hike!

This hike has some of the best views in all of Sedona even without peering through the windows. There are 6 windows to visit and a bonus one later on in the trail in a separate area.

The hike is 9 miles if you don’t have a 4×4 and it is ranked as difficult so would only attempt this if you are a higher level of hiker.

Go Winery Hopping

Best Wineries in Sedona

If you have read any of my articles then you know I am all about the wineries in Sedona. No, it is not Italy or Napa but it is a great novelty to visit some smaller vineyards and even doing an all day winery hop!

There are numerous vineyards surrounding Sedona but definitely visit the winery corridor, which is Javelina Leap Vineyard, Oak Creek Vineyards and my favorite Page Springs Cellars. See here for the 3 best wineries in Sedona!

Best Wineries In Sedona Acantra Vineyard & Winery 2

Page Springs is absolutely stunning as it has ground you can walk in, a creek you can walk down to, a nice sun deck and the perfect Sedona ambiance for your trip. You can also visit the lovely DA Ranch, pictured below!

sedona trip reddit

Page Springs is such a great place to go with the views of the wineries, cheap-ish wine tastings and a solid menu. They also have live music on Friday and Saturday nights to cozy up with your date for a nice little night.

best wineries in Sedona

I recommend trying all wine taste menus and the spinach artichoke dip, I don’t even care that much about spinach or artichokes but it is delightful. You can leave there with a full stomach and 4 wine tastings for under $100!

If you are in Sedona for a date weekend, a girls trip… maybe a guys trip… you absolutely have to stop by here along with the other two aforementioned wineries next door.

Find The Sedona Subway

Subway Cave Trail Hike Boynton Canyon Sedona

This is one of the most amazing pictures in all of Sedona and a must-do when visiting Sedona! It isn’t too hard of a hike at just 5.3 miles with not much elevation change.

However, the Subway in Sedona is very hard to find so you definitely want to follow our guide here to see the best way to find it! Sedona Subway Cave Guide & Directions.

There is more than just the Subway cave as well at this hike as you can find ruins, other caves and of course stunning views throughout!

Go Cliff Jumping In Sedona

Wet Beaver Creek The Crack Hike

There are a few spots for cliff jumping around Sedona but the most infamous is of course The Crack, located via the Wet Beaver Creek trail hike.

This is even in the top 3 hikes in Sedona as it is a perfect length, there are springs you can stop in along the way and then there is the swimming hole at the end.

It is pretty flat throughout, a 7 mile out-and-back, dogs on a leash are allowed and sometimes people will have picnics and a couple drinks all day out there. It can get a little crowded unfortunately but is still a great time and place to see regardless.

sedona trip reddit

Definitely stray to the right at the beginning of your hike to visit the springs and little swimming holes along the way. Here is a full hike guide to Wet Beaver Creek!

ATV or 4-Wheel To Maybe One Of The Best Lookouts In Sedona

sedona trip reddit

If you have a 4×4 or rent an ATV then you absolutely need to get to the top of Schnebly Hill Road, giving you arguably the best view of Sedona. This is a pretty rugged drive to the top but wow is it worth it.

At the top you will be greeted with one of the nicest lookouts you have ever seen. This road is extremely rough with large rocks so definitely do not attempt it unless you have a high profile 4×4 or of course an ATV.

sedona trip reddit

If you want to keep going up, there is a forest area beyond the top of the road where you can really test your ATV speed and take a wander through the forest where I have seen lots of wildlife.

If you are heading back to Phoenix or North after you do this drive you can also exit out via the top vs. going back down the rough drive as well.

If wanting to rent an ATV, Groupon often has 50% off ATV rentals so definitely check those out before you go!

Visit The Best Caves in Sedona

sedona trip reddit

There are some amazing caves in Sedona with my favorites being the Keyhole Cave , Soldier’s Pass Cave and the Birthing Cave . All are great hikes and good for all ages! I would do Soldier’s Pass if you had to pick one as it is one of the best hikes in Sedona.

Soldier's Pass Cave Hike Trail - Sedona Hike 11

The Keyhole Cave is a little harder to find while the Birthing Cave is actually the easier of the three. See here for a full Birthing Cave Guide,   here for a full Soldier’s Pass Cave Guide and then here for the Keyhole Cave.

Swing By A Distillery for Award Winning Bourbon!

Did you know Sedona has a gold medal winner at the America Craft Distillery Wards?

best things to do in Sedona

Redwall Distillery was voted best straight bourbon in America and not only that… it has a great little location with a beautiful view and live music.

Grab yourself your favorite bourbon drink, sit by the fire and watch the sun go down at this perfect spot!

best things to do in Sedona

Want a great souvenir from your trip? You can also buy a bottle of the award winning bourbon on your visit.

Find Vultee Arch

Vultee Arch is arguably a better natural bridge than Devil’s Bridge solely because it is much less visited and the hike to it via Sterling Pass is much prettier.

Vultee arch hike natural bridge sedona

The hike is rated difficult, which just makes you earn it, and also keeps it from being too overcrowded like Devil’s Bridge is.

For the full article and directions to Vultee Arch see our article by clicking here.

Go To a Sedona Energy Vortex

sedona trip reddit

I have not been to anywhere in the world that offers an energy vortex… so take advantage.

What is an energy vortex? They are said to be intersections of electromagnetic earth energy. Energy vortexes are supposed to help with reflection, meditation, energizing, vision and higher clarity.

How do you know you are in an energy vortex?

You may feel you are in a vortex when you feel some subtle energy vibrations such as tingling in your body or hands, feel your body heating up, have a feeling of a rush of energy, or have a shift in consciousness or perception.

sedona trip reddit

Where are the Sedona Energy Vortexes? Sedona has four main vortexes, located at Airport Mesa, Bell Rock, Cathedral Rock and Boynton Canyon. There are a plethora of sites that you can search and find more info on these incredible vortexes.

Take a Stroll Through Tlaquepaque Arts & Shopping Village

Immerse yourself in the vibrant arts scene of Sedona at Tlaquepaque, where cobblestone paths lead to galleries, boutiques, and charming cafes.

best things to do in Sedona

A unique experience for shopping enthusiasts and art lovers. The grounds themselves are stunning and overall just a great place to walk around. They even have an award winning brewery on-site along with lots of cafe’s and places for snacking.

best things to do in Sedona

You absolutely have to go at night if you have the chance as it is beautiful with all the lights as well.

Hike Bear Mountain For Some Of The Best Views in Town

sedona trip reddit

Bear Mountain Trail is one of the best hikes in Sedona.

It is difficult but throughout the entire hike you are presented with a new incredible view or site.

sedona trip reddit

It is a beast of a hike with 2,000 ft elevation and 4.5 miles out-and-back. However, my pug did this hike and so did my parents. It is hard but it is worth the challenge. Pack lots of water, food and get out there.

You will be so happy you did, there are truly 4-5 absolutely ridiculous different views on the hike.  See this one and the top 6 hikes in Sedona Click here.

Visit An Award Winning Brewery

Not only does Sedona have wineries, award winning bourbon distilleries but also an award winning brewery!

It is a great combination of a brewery but also a casual pub with good food and located right in the heart of town at the Tlaquepaque Arts & Crafts Village.

beer at a brewery in sedona

While not a huge craft beer connoisseur myself, the Oak Creek Gold Lager is one of the best beers I have ever tasted if you want something on the light side.

Of course they have everything a brewery lover wants with seasonals, ambers, pale ales, IPAs, Hefewiezens and more!

Get Dinner Or Drinks With A View

Best Restaurants Sedona

This is a no brainer. Having drinks and eating during sunset or anytime in Sedona is a must do. Whether you want to snuggle up to a fire or sit on a patio taking in the vast landscape of Sedona, it is one of the best things to do after potentially a long hiking day.

The best places to go for drinks with a view are Enchantment Resort and Mariposa Latin Inspired Grill. Both of them give you great views of the red rock and are beautiful places for dinner or just drinks.

Sedona Restaurants The Spot At Sevon Canyons

Page Sellers is of course stunning with views of the vineyard, Cress On the Creek is nice as well but pricey and Salt Rock is nice ambiance as well. See the Top 8 Restaurants in Sedona here!

sedona trip reddit

Talking bucket list, one thing that just missed the cut is having an infused drink a Creekside Bistro Sedona. This is also one of my favorite restaurants in Sedona as it has amazing food but isn’t extremely pricey or stuffy.

Find the Only Mcdonald’s In The World That Doesn’t Have Golden Arches

This is silly and so American but… it’s pretty cool to think there is only one in the world! I’m not saying take a picture with it (you can, people do) but when you are driving around Sedona definitely keep your eyes open.

It’s also something you can tell those people in your family or friends who enjoy interesting dumb facts. Why does the Sedona Mcdonald’s have turquoise arches?

sedona trip reddit

When Mcdonald’s came to town in 1993, government officials deemed that the golden arches would contrast too much against the beautiful red rock.

Thus, Arizona Mcdonald’s was forced to have turquoise arches and is the only place in the world without those golden arches.

This might be the most Sedona thing ever to change one of the logo of one of biggest corporate brands on earth to match it’s decor… good for you Sedona.

Visit The Prettiest View From A Church You Have Ever Seen

I love places of worship of all kinds and always visit them wherever I go. Chapel of the Holy Cross hands down has the most incredible view through glass stained windows I have ever seen.

The chapel is built into the rock buttes of Sedona and is almost as stunning of a picture from the outside as it is the inside.

sedona trip reddit

It is open to the public so definitely go in and see the view of Sedona through their giant stained glass windows. Please also donate to the church and light a candle as well.

You can even throw a coin into the fountain outside to make a wish! It’s also one of the Seven Man-Made Wonders of Arizona.

Visit Devil’s Bridge

sedona trip reddit

I almost didn’t want to include this as it is a no brainer but obviously this has to be a bucket list item.

Devil’s Bridge is home to one of the most unique pictures in the world and maybe the most iconic picture in Sedona. See the full Devil’s Bridge Guide here!

sedona trip reddit

Really try and get right to the trailhead if you can as that extra hour overall from the parking lot is meh…

sedona trip reddit

Please be respectful to everyone and don’t take forever out on the arch as undoubtedly there are 10 people in line waiting for the same picture. Also, be a great person and offer to take people’s picture for them.

Take A Hot Air Balloon Or Helicopter Ride

sedona trip reddit

It is surprisingly cheaper than you’d think to take a short helicopter ride over Sedona. If you want a unique experience then this is a must-do for the best view of Sedona as well as a great guide for the area.

You can get 15 minute Helicopter tours on Groupon or other deal sites for $115 or so per person. 15 minutes seems short but you see a ton and it is just cool if you have never experienced it before.

Find The 7 Sacred Pools & Devil’s Kitchen

sedona trip reddit

Take this one with a grain of salt as the pictures of the pools and actually seeing the pools are pretty far apart. Don’t go there expecting something amazing as they are a little underwhelming.

With that said, it is definitely something you need to check off your bucket list and overall the hike it is joined to is a great hike as well. For how to see these see the full guide on the hike here!

What are the 7 Sacred Pools? The 7 Sacred Pools were naturally created cut from the sandstone canyon and are filled via a natural stream. Some of their beauty comes from the reflection of the blue skies and surrounding red rock.

sedona trip reddit

Be also sure to spot the tadpoles living within them! Why are they called the 7 Sacred Pools? I honestly cannot find out and if you know please let me know in the comments. I have asked locals, Sedona tourism and Googled it with no luck…

Where are the 7 Sacred Pools? The 7 Sacred Pools can be accessed via the Soldier Pass hike and are very close to Devil’s Kitchen, which is the largest sinkhole in Sedona. Devil’s Kitchen Sinkhole is 150 ft wide and 50 ft deep, which was created in the late 1800s.

How long is the hike to the 7 Sacred Pools? The hike itself is extremely short and the entire Soldier Pass Trail is only 2.5 miles round trip. The hike to the 7 Sacred Pools is less than a mile.

Walk West Fork Trail When The Leaves Are Changing Color

Best Hikes In Sedona Bear Mountain Trail 24

To be fair, hiking West Fork Trail in itself could be a Sedona bucket list item. However, to really get that cherry on top you should try to see in in the Fall as the leaves are changing as it is perfection. See here for the entire West Fork Trail Hike Guide!

The hike itself is top 2 hikes in Sedona and perfect for people of all ages due to it being mostly flat. It is 7 miles but you definitely don’t have to do all 7 miles as their isn’t a true huge payoff at the end compared to just how pretty the hike itself is.

West Fork Trail Best Hikes In Sedona

The ever changing landscape, canyon walls and stream make it a beautiful hike the entire time so feel free to turn around whenever you’ve had enough.

sedona trip reddit

Do know that you will have to get your feet wet most likely and I honestly suggest walking up the shallow parts of the stream when you can as the view is even prettier. At the start of the walk you will also see some ruins and a little cave.

If you are lucky enough to you might be able to see the stunningly colored crawfish in the water and fish even try to eat them!

Find Old Ruins Or Heritage Sites

Subway Cave Trail Hike Boynton Canyon Sedona

Sedona is home to a few areas with ruins and heritage sites. It is not a must-see but if you have some extra time then definitely check it off your list! Palatki Heritage Site is the main place to see ruins, which is made up of cliff dwellings from the 11oos to the 1300s.

Best Hikes In Sedona West Fork Trail

There are also ruins and caves along the West Fork Trail when you first start out, including a cool little cave. You can find more ruins at the Subway Cave hike, which you can find here!

Visit Sedona After a Snowfall

Snowfall in Sedona

You would think it would be hard to make Sedona any more beautiful but if you have the chance to make it up after or during a snowfall than you will be blessed with even more stunning views!

I honestly think the best time to visit Sedona is in the winter. Less crowds, the snow makes everything even prettier, bundle up by a fire and just a great winter spot.

Leave No Trace

Do remember to leave no trace when you visit and always pack in what you pack out!

Where to Stay in Sedona

There are a plethora of places to stay in Sedona of all price ranges. However, my favorite place, without breaking the bank is The Wilde Resort & Spa.

best affordable hotel in Sedona

The Wilde has every single thing you could want in a resort but without some of the crazy costs that come with other hotels of its caliber.

I felt absolutely pampered on my stay, was so comfortable and it went above and beyond! See our full article here on the amazing place!

Took some tips and visited Page Springs Cellars and DA Ranch, just outside Sedona. Perfect day trip to break up some of the Covid Craziness. I can’t wait to make another trip down to Sedona to do some more tastings!

Glad you enjoyed it, such a great place to unplug!

Sedona will always hold a special place in my heart. It was my grandmother’s favorite spot. After her passing we visited to scatter her ashes there. She’ll forever be one with those gorgeous mountains.

DAY 1: Hike to a vortex and get a taste of Sedona

There's no better way to get acquainted with Sedona than by spending the day surrounded by red rocks and sweeping views. Take your pick of trails from Sedona's 7 Vistas , ranging from easy to moderate. Our favorite is the 5.1-mile Aerie Trail, where views of Boynton Canyon provide a look into one of the area's most well-known vortexes . Between endorphins from the hike and your proximity to a vortex, you're sure to feel the energy of Sedona. Afterward, satisfy rumbling bellies with a stop at Pisa Lisa in downtown Sedona. You'll find a menu full of wood-fired pizza with locally sourced ingredients. That evening, get cozy around the campfire at Tiny Camp —or enjoy a restful night at any of the numerous lodging options nearby.

DAY 2: Embark on an epic art walk, swim in Oak Creek, and stargaze

Groups of people walk in an open-air, Spanish-style plaza; a fountain and several trees sit in the center

Today you'll burn calories another way—with an art tour. Begin the morning at Creekside Coffee , overlooking a truly jaw-dropping view of the surrounding red rocks and Oak Creek beneath a canopy of cottonwoods. Then, hit the pavement.

Follow the Sedona Walking Trail and visit more than 15 art galleries featuring local and international artists. This is truly a wonderful way to capture the vibe of the town and peruse its every corner. By the end of the day, you might just be the one writing Sedona travel guides. That afternoon, journey to Grasshopper Point , where an afternoon spent alongside Oak Creek is a refreshing escape from town. Or, continue up the road 1.8 additional miles to Garland's Indian Jewelry for some retail therapy. Sedona is known for its nightlife...and by that, we mean its night sky. After the sun goes down, join the pros at Sedona Stargazing to gaze at distant galaxies through high-powered telescopes to discover why Sedona is rated a Dark Sky destination .

DAY 3: Go for a hot air balloon ride, then mountain bike

How to Spend the Week of a Lifetime in Sedona

Kick things up a notch on day three with an adrenaline-filled schedule. In the morning, meet up with Red Rock Balloon Adventures . They'll take you soaring high above the red rocks of Sedona for a birds-eye view you won't soon forget. After grabbing lunch, swing by one of Sedona's many mountain bike outfitters to rent a full-suspension ride. With 235 miles of local trails, there is truly something for every type of rider—especially those with advanced skills. Ask for recommendations in the shop or hire a guide to show you around (and fix your tire, should you accidentally run over a cactus). Another option for this afternoon is to meander the trails at Red Rock State Park , a wildlife preserve where lucky visitors can spot javelina, mule deer, bobcats and more. Today is the perfect opportunity to celebrate your adventurous pursuits with a craft brew at Sedona Beer Company . Hot tip: The fried chicken sandwich is a real crowd-pleaser.

DAY 4: Step back in time (and enjoy an afternoon at the spa)

On day four, deepen your knowledge of the area with a few visits to key historical and architectural destinations. First, stop by the Sedona Heritage Museum . Then, walk the steps to the Chapel of the Holy Cross —an iconic building that individuals of all religious affiliations enjoy visiting and photographing. In the afternoon, continue on to the nearby community of Cottonwood, where Tuzigoot National Monument takes you even further into the past. Upon returning to town, either get your aura read (or even photographed) or relax at one of the many local spas and wellness centers. L'Auberge Sedona has a full menu of luxurious treatments, including seasonal specials that are especially rejuvenating.

DAY 5: Let a local take the wheel and go wine tasting

Two images: One is a man with a wine glass being filled with red wine; the other is a couple in a bright space drinking wine

Let someone else take the handlebars—err, steering wheel—on day four. Hire a Pink Jeep Tou r to take you on a white-knuckle adventure over some of the most challenging local terrain. You'll wonder at the beauty of the scenery as well as the skill of your driver as they expertly navigate rocks and roots to take you to some of the most scenic spots in town. Prefer to stay on the pavement? Opt for a Trolley Tour , which will take you through Sedona at a slower, but enjoyable and informative pace. That afternoon, go wine tasting. Sedona and its surrounding communities of Cottonwood, Clarkdale and Jerome are home to over thirteen tasting rooms, including Winery 1912 and Burning Tree Cellars . You can even make a whole day out of it and kayak down the Verde River to a special outdoor wine tasting. Talk about a great way to stay cool on a hot summer day.

DAY 6: Practice your putt on Sedona's greens

Finally, top it all off with a round of golf . Sedona is home to four exceptionally scenic greens; ranging from 9-hole par-3 courses to 18-hole Championship courses. They all share one thing in common—panoramic views of Red Rock Country that make it hard to concentrate on your game. Later that day, stop by Red Rock Crossing to photograph iconic Cathedral Rock for sunset. If you followed along, you'll have accomplished all 25 things to do on our ultimate Sedona, Arizona bucket list. (And even if you didn't, we bet you still had a great time.)

Sedona Cares Pledge

  • The rocks are red, and the silence is golden. I vow to respect the natural quiet of Sedona's open spaces and neighborhoods.
  • I will be mindful of Sedona's arid environment by minimizing my water and energy use, and I will be extremely careful with fire.
  • I'll make my own memories, but not my own trails.
  • I won't risk life or limb (human or sapling) for more likes. I won't get killed for a killer photo.
  • When playing outside, I'll be ready for rapid changes in weather and random episodes of magic.
  • I'll leave no trace and pack out all my trash—that includes TP and pup poo!
  • I will discover art in Sedona's galleries rather than making my own. Carving on trees or rocks, stacking stones, or defacing the environment diminishes nature's art.
  • If I can't find a parking spot, I will not invent my own. I will go with the traffic flow, using my turn signal often and my car horn seldom.
  • I'll be caring and considerate wherever I go because that's the Sedona way.

Sedona Travel Tips: 15 Mistakes to Avoid on Your Vacation

Are you getting ready for a trip to one of the most beautiful places in the United States? Sedona, Arizona, with its gorgeous scenery, calm energy, and delicious food, is the perfect vacation. And these 15 Sedona Travel Tips will make it even more memorable.

Avoid these mistakes and you’ll be planning your next trip to Sedona before you even leave.

sedona travel tips

Whether it’s a day trip during an Arizona road trip or you’re spending an entire weekend there, use these Sedona tips and you’ll avoid hassle, frustration, and headaches.

Disclosure: This post contains affiliate links that earn a small commission at no extra cost to you.

1. You Forget a Water Bottle

A Sedona MUST! Make sure everyone in your group has a reusable water bottle —especially during the warmer months. A hot day in Sedona is no joke and you’re going to want water on command as you’re on the hiking trails, exploring, and taking in all of the beautiful rock formations in Northern Arizona.

Not to mention, Sedona sits at 4,350′—a big jump for those who live at sea level. Extra water is needed! Go with this water bottle and you will NOT be disappointed.

2. You Don’t Pack the Right Gear

Let’s talk clothes and packing for Sedona. While hiking through Coconino National Forest, it will depend on the time of year. Summer months? Lots of cool, breathable clothing that can absorb sweat. Winter months? Make sure you have layers. Plus, don’t forget…

  • Hiking Shoes: If you don’t have any, invest in a pair. Trust me, you don’t want to be here without them. These Merrells are perfect (and affordable!)
  • Hiking Clothes: Mentioned above. Layers are key.
  • Hiking Backpack: You’ll want a small, comfortable bag to take with you throughout your trip. You don’t need anything heavy-duty—this is the perfect, affordable, lightweight backpack . TIP: Use it as your personal item on the flight.
  • Sunglasses: Self-explanatory!

3. You Pack Too Many Fancy Outfits

Don’t stress about looking 110%. Sedona, Arizona is very casual. There is no pressure to fill your suitcase with fancy dresses or suits and ties. Even higher-end restaurants don’t require fancy apparel and you’ll likely stick out more given the nature of Sedona and its outdoor vibe. You’ll find most people dressed in hiking attire or outfits that are comfortable for walking and heat.

packing for sedona

4. You Forget a Portable Charger

Not only do you want to bring a standard charging cord (obviously), but it is smart to have a portable charging block while you’re in Sedona. Hiking throughout the area will put you in a lot of dead zones where you will lose battery quicker. You will want your phone for any maps and/or photos, so make sure you are prepared with an extra charge while you are out. This portable charger is compatible with both iPhones and Androids.

TIP: Put your phone in airplane mode while you are hiking . You’ll save battery, but will still be able to take pics!

5. You Don’t Rent a Car

Most visitors fly into the Phoenix airport and make the two-hour drive north to Sedona. While there are shuttles from the airport, I would strongly suggest renting a car. This gives you easy access to transportation throughout your trip and is one of the best ways to get around (vs. Ubers/taxis/buses.) Plus, you get to admire all of the scenic drives in the area!

sedona travel tips

6. You Don’t Hike in the Early Morning

Pull into a parking lot at most Sedona hikes after 8 AM and you are likely going to have a tough time finding a spot. Don’t let that surprise you if it’s your first time visiting. One of the best Sedona tips is to plan all of your hikes for the early morning and arrive no later than 7 AM.

The early bird gets the worm in Sedona!

Not only does parking factor in here, but HEAT. If you want to hike without the sun threatening to ruin your experience, hike EARLY or you are going to be way too hot.

7. You Only Go to Well-Known Hikes (and Don’t Expect Crowds)

One of my biggest pieces of advice for traveling to Sedona, Arizona: get off the beaten path when it comes to hikes! Mix it up. Experience a few of the popular ones, while also incorporating a few lesser-known adventures that will surround you with fewer people—and are still great hikes!

boynton canyon trail

Popular, crowded trails:

  • Devil’s Bridge : I experienced this a few years ago but it has BLOWN UP since. You will wait 2+ hours to get your picture on the bridge. Up to you, but I would do something else.
  • Airport Mesa : Come for sunset, but know you will be surrounded by a LOT of people.
  • Cathedral Rock Trail: Probably the most popular trail. I would still recommend it, but do it EARLY.
  • Boynton Canyon Trail: Another I would still recommend.

Less crowded trails:

  • Bear Mountain : Why is this a less popular hike? Because it’s HARD. But you can do it 🙂
  • Brins Mesa: Beautiful trail and incredible scenery—plus, only moderate! This is one of the best hikes.
  • Mescal Mountain Trail: Another goodie near Boynton Canyon.

bear mountain trail

Don’t forget your Red Rock Pass for hiking in Sedona.

8. You Don’t Experience a Vortex

What the heck is a Vortex, you ask? They are intersections of electromagnetic fields that radiate energy from the earth’s surface and can help one feel recharged and uplifted. These energy vortexes are said to be healing and helpful to self-exploration, and it’s scientifically proven that feelings are magnified within a vortex. Sounds crazy, right?

Well, save your skepticism until you visit. Because I can confirm! It is close to guaranteed that you will feel happier and lighter upon leaving both an intense vortex site and Sedona in general.

So, where do you find a Vortex site in Sedona? You can find them on an easy hike such as Bell Rock, a moderate hike such as Boynton Canyon, and/or on the ever-popular Pink Jeep Tours that include Cathedral Rock. Here is the list of them all.

9. You Don’t Make Restaurant Reservations

Sedona is a foodie scene, for sure! And many of their top-notch restaurants are booked out far in advance —sometimes months, especially those with spectacular views. If you want to eat at places like Mariposa Latin-Inspired Grill , Elote Cafe , or The Hudson , plan ahead and make reservations.

TIP #1: Don’t forget to leave room for spontaneity as well. Not ALL of the best restaurants in Sedona require reservations and you will find great options without them. You never know some of the best places you might find on a whim! (A few of my favorites: Hideaway House , The Vault , and 89Agave Cantina .)

TIP #2: Check restaurant websites ; some have an online waitlist you can get on before you arrive.

10. You Eat Dinner Too Late

The best thing about Sedona restaurants? INCREDIBLE VIEWS. And if you eat too late (past dark), you are going to miss them all! The best time to have dinner in Sedona is on the earlier side. Plus, you can go to a great spot and reduce your wait time.

NOTE: Keep in mind that there isn’t much nightlife in Sedona. You get up earlier, eat earlier, and go to sleep earlier so this tip will fit right into your schedule 🙂

sedona travel tips

11. You Don’t Try a Prickly Pear Margarita

One of the most important Sedona tips: Prickly Pear Margaritas are a Sedona MUST—grab one on your very first day! This cocktail combines tequila and syrup derived from the prickly pear cactus. Cool, delicious, and a beautiful pink color for your photos 😉

One of my favorite places to grab them is the Cowboy Club which is right in Uptown and the perfect addition to your Sedona shopping adventures.

prickly pear margaritas

12. You Don’t Explore Uptown

Uptown Sedona is a fun and lively part of town where you will find shops, restaurants, and bars. Not only will you experience good food and fun souvenirs, but great views as well with Uptown’s red rock backdrop. It’s a great place post-hike.

TIP: It can be tough to find parking. You may need to go up onto side streets and walk into this part of town.

Love shopping? Don’t miss Tlaquepaque Arts And Crafts Village! Another shopping area that also includes restaurants and bars.

13. You Don’t Expect Traffic

Even a short drive can become a LONG one in Sedona. Unfortunately, this is a popular destination and there are no secret roads or shortcuts. It is a good idea to plan ahead and park your car (early) where you know you can walk to multiple places. Come late afternoon, Sedona can be backed up pretty much everywhere!

NOTE: Expect roundabouts too that become even more frustrating in traffic! Have patience and enjoy the views 🙂

14. You Don’t Go to a Watering Hole

No Sedona trip is complete without a watering hole —it’s one of the best things to do (and way to cool off)! Plus, you have many to choose from. A great place is the natural water slides inside Slide Rock State Park which I cannot recommend enough. Even if I only had one day in Sedona, I would visit this park.

Check out these 10 Sedona Swimming Holes for more options in Sedona and the surrounding area for a great time!

15. You Don’t Find Time to RELAX

Sedona is full of adventure. But one of the best Sedona tips is that it is also the perfect place to relax. Get a massage, go for a wine tasting, do yoga on the red rocks, hang out at the pool or find a meditation center. Remember, you’re on vacation and don’t want all day, every day to be taken up by hikes. (You’ll go home more tired than you came!)

Check out Enchantment Resort for an all-around well-being-focused stay! It looks magical. And pictured below is the amazing pool located at The Hyatt —a fantastic hotel that I highly recommend.

What To Do In Sedona: How To Plan An Awesome 3+ Day Itinerary

things to do in sedona, what to do in sedona, sedona what to do,sedona itinerary

Gorgeous red rock vistas.  Great weather year-round.  An abundance of hiking opportunities.  An up-and-coming foodie scene.   It’s easy to see how Sedona has become one of the most popular year-round destinations in the U.S.  But that intensive popularity can also mean some challenges in planning the perfect Sedona itinerary.

I spent 4-5 days in Sedona last year and had an awesome time, but some things went perfectly and others were a struggle (helloooo restaurant availability!).  When figuring out what to do in Sedona, it’s easy to get sucked into viral Instagram influencer posts and lose sight of what you individually would most enjoy.

The post below is lengthy because I wanted to cover everything from things to do in Sedona, how to plan a trip, where to stay, where to eat, what hikes I loved the most (and which I didn’t) and advice such as packing tips and time of year.  I also link to deeper posts on many of these topics throughout.

When is the best time to visit Sedona?

Sedona can actually be a great year-round destination, and so the best time to visit really depends on what you’re looking for.  Here are some of my thoughts, and I found this post helpful to give even more details and pros and cons.

I visited in spring, and that’s the most popular time to visit—you have generally great weather (but not TOO hot) and good stargazing and hiking conditions.  It’s also the most crowded and expensive because of that.   Fall offers similar benefits though may be a bit more prone to clouds and rain.

Summer is HOT, so it depends on what you’re wanting to do.  If it’s lots of hiking, that may be difficult due to high temperatures and most trails not having shade.

Winter is typically the least crowded and less expensive, and still has generally temperate weather, though you take your chances more on rain, mud (which can be dangerous on the rocky trails), and more clouds for stargazing.

What to pack for Sedona

Obviously, your packing needs will depend somewhat on time of year, but here are some considerations that will work for a lot of the year.  I was there in April and it was quite cold in the mornings (low 40s F), but by mid-morning it got quite hot (I got a sunburn by 11a and I *don’t* burn normally), and then in the evening was windy and cool again.

That means that LAYERS are key!  I also did not pack enough clothes for the colder weather in the morning and evenings (it got quite windy at night!).  Here are some key things that I brought to Sedona (or would make sure I bring next time):

  • For hiking, a couple pairs of yoga pants (I swear by Athleta ones ) are great because they protect you, keep you a bit warmer, and are super comfy.  For hiking in the heat, the yoga pants still work well, but some shorts (I wear the mesh racer run shorts) and a tank top and comfy sports bra are also helpful.
  • I brought one thinner fleece jacket (full-zip), plus my trusty Icebreaker thin merino wool gloves (directly here if they’re out of stock on Amazon) and fleece headband .
  • For casual stuff like winery visits and shopping, these Athleta pants are cute and versatile, lightweight enough to wear in the heat and be comfortable.  And you can do lighter hiking in them and then go straight to a nicer restaurant and look great.  I also wore Stitch Fix sundresses a lot.
  • As I said above, I’d bring more layers to stay warm in the evenings, like if I sat on a patio at dinner.  In particular, a couple cardigans would be a good idea (I’m a huge fan of Loft ones, I have a Torrid one I love, and sadly my favorite from Pea & the Pod has been discontinued).
  • Good tennis shoes are key, and I wished I’d brought an extra pair (something lightweight is nice).
  • I wished I’d brought my FAVE cute & comfy walking sandals , which are cute enough for casual stuff like wineries and restaurants, but also can do some easy to moderate hiking.
  • Also I recommend these Smartwool super thin no-show socks , which will keep your feet warm when it’s cold (and cool during the day), and I didn’t have as much irritation from the sand and gravel getting in.
  • Also sunscreen is absolutely CRITICAL, as Sedona is at a little higher altitude (than where I live), the sun is *really* strong, plus there not a lot of shade to be found.  But I hate sunscreens and all the greasiness and breaking out, so I’ve found some awesome face sunscreens for more casual travel, plus 9 more serious sunscreens I swear by for travel.
  • A smaller hiking backpack (or a big cross-body purse ) is important for hiking, to bring extra sunscreen, plenty of water, etc.

How to get to Sedona

Most people will fly into Phoenix, but you could also fly into Flagstaff (typically a bit more expensive, both for flights and rental cars).  You absolutely need a car in Sedona , to get around, explore the gorgeous landscapes, etc.

For renting a car, I always search in a few different places and compare both the prices and specific offerings/benefits.  My go-to’s are  DiscoverCars ,  RentalCars.com , and  AutoEurope  as well.

One note, the rental car shuttle situation in Phoenix is a garbage dumpster fire, so it can take some time to get your car.  I didn’t have issues on returning and making my flight, however.

The drive from Phoenix to Sedona takes about 2 to 2.5 hours, an easy highway cruise.  There are some great places to stop along the way (I’ll highlight some below), and be warned that there is no cell signal for much of the drive AND long stretches without a gas station, so plan ahead.

How to plan your itinerary

I have a much deeper post on Sedona trip planning tips , covering topics from photography to FOMO, clothing choices to altitude.  So I won’t go into all of that here, I recommend you check it out!  But I’ll highlight a few of the most critical things to keep in mind as you plan your trip.

First, Sedona is expensive!  Hotels in particular are significantly more costly than many other U.S. destinations I’ve visited, so you’ll need to work hard to find good deals.

It’s also popular…if there’s a particular restaurant, winery tasting, tour, or something else you want to do, I’d strongly recommend making reservations ahead of time.  That’s especially true since COVID, and I had trouble getting reservations at some of the most popular restaurants even a few weeks ahead of time.

Don’t get suckered in by FOMO…Sedona is one of those Pinterest-famous destinations and it’s easy to get caught up in all the gorgeous pics, “must-do” hikes, and more.  But there is SO much

Unless you’re visiting in winter, you’ll want to get out early for any outdoor activities, because it gets really hot by midday…mid-afternoon is a good time to take a siesta, lay by the pool, or go sip some wine somewhere.  Your best lighting for photos will follow this pattern, with early morning, late afternoon, and sunset being best.

PRO TIP:   Arizona does not do Daylight Savings Time, so if it’s DST where you are coming from, take that into account on your timings.

Things to do in Sedona - beautiful sunset views at Airport Vortex

You might also like:   How to Pick the Best Hotel Every Single Time

Let’s get this out of the way at the start—Sedona is EXPENSIVE!  Granted, I was visiting during one of the peak times (April) but also during COVID so overall visitors were lighter.  And to me, hotel costs were at least twice as much as I’d expect.  So basically you’re paying high-end hotel prices for a fairly simple motel room.  Just good to know going in.

On the luxury end:   I stayed at Enchantment Resort (the first few photos below), and I’ve written a deep review post about the experience.  There’s no question that the location and red rock views surrounding the resort are amazing.  The restaurant was great too.  However, the actual resort rooms, service, etc. definitely wasn’t “luxury” relative to the price tag.  So, pros and cons.

If you’re looking for those amazing close-up red rocks views, another consideration would be Sky Ranch Lodge Resort or The Wilde Resort .  Both offer the same benefits of views and locations, have great reviews, and come at a more palatable price tag.

Next time I would still splurge a bit but try Amara instead, or go really high-end and do L’Auberge (which looks amazing, but I wanted a more traditional red rocks view on my first visit; you can see TripAdvisor reviews ).

Midrange:  For my last couple nights I stayed at Arabella .  The rooms were pretty basic, though you can tell they’ve tried to “zhuszh” them up a bit (it’s a “motel” setup where you drive up to your door on the outside).

It has a nice courtyard and pool, and they plan lots of activities that guests can join in on (happy hours, stargazing, hikes, etc.).  It’s also a pet friendly option.  You can read more reviews on TripAdvisor .

What to do on a Sedona itinerary

Rather than providing an actual structured itinerary, I’ll share individual things to do in Sedona because it would be very difficult to plan ahead for weather, clear skies, how busy trails are, and every other eventuality.  So this is a “choose your own adventure” itinerary!

Enjoy the drive to (or from) Phoenix

There are some great stops on the 2.5 hour drive from the Phoenix airport to Sedona, so it’s worth taking your time and enjoying.  First, there’s Montezuma Castle National Monument, dedicated to preserving Native American culture.

The name is a misnomer (early settlers thought it was a castle), but despite that the five-story, 20-room high-rise apartment carved into the limestone cliff are a wonderful example of ancient cliff dwellings.  As far as we know, these were built by the cliff-dwelling Sinagua people, a hunter-gatherer pre-Colombian Native American tribe.

Right off the highway at the turn-off to the monument, I happened upon a Navajo frybread stand.  I love these impromptu finds while traveling!  I devoured a hot, puffy piece of fried dough sprinkled with cinnamon-sugar, which fueled me up for my last stop.

Alcantara Vineyards is a lovely little oasis, and in a slightly different area than most of the Sedona-area wineries.  I sipped a flight of wine and had a snack, enjoying the backyard vibe and doing some people watching.  There’s also a brewery or two around here if that’s more your style.  Then it’s on to Sedona!

Check out my deeper post on these stops and what order to do them in

Go for a scenic drive

Any direction you go within or around Sedona, you’ll have a scenic drive.  So sometimes it’s worth just getting into the car and heading out to see what you find.  Also, the drive out toward Boynton Canyon (first pic below), where Enchantment Resort is located, is stunning—make sure you get out there!

There is an official Red Rock Scenic Byway coming out of Sedona, though, and you definitely should drive it at least once.  It’s not super long so you can do it a couple times depending on what you want to do.  The byway stretches highway 179 south from Sedona to the village of Oak Creek (it’s how you’d get to the wineries too).

It’s a gorgeous drive, where you’d want to stop every mile to take photos, though that’s harder than it sounds—there are no real viewpoints or easy pullouts for awesome views.  There are also many hiking trails along the way, though the parking lots fill up on weekends during high season.

Plan a half day if you’re wanting to stop at the Chapel of the Holy Cross (more on that below), maybe do a hike or two.  If you just drive it straight through it’s only like 15-20 minutes, so the amount of time is totally up to you.

Visit the Chapel of the Holy Cross

The Chapel of the Holy Cross is one of the first possible stops along the scenic byway route, and definitely needs to be on your itinerary.  It was designed by a student of architect Frank Lloyd Wright, sculptor Marguerite Brunswig Staude.

Staude was an Arizona native, and ended up building a church that looks like it’s naturally rising right out of Sedona’s red rocks—it’s both visually arresting but also manages to blend into the surroundings naturally.

The church was completed in 1956 and has been an icon of the area ever since.  You don’t need to spend lots of time here, but it’s worth seeing.  You also get great views from the chapel, and it’s supposed to be a great place for stargazing as well (consider sunrise as well).

Here’s a deeper post on the Chapel of the Holy Cross for more details!

The amazing landscapes and hikes are one of the biggest draws to Sedona, and you are truly spoiled for choice.  As I mention in my tips for Sedona , one of the biggest traps you can fall into is focusing solely on the “Instagram famous” hikes like Devil’s Bridge and Cathedral Rock, without 1) planning ahead, and 2) considering the many other options.

The red rocks that rise up around Sedona offer year-round hiking opportunities, with everything from a super easy walk to near-vertical scrambling.  There are also SO many under-the-radar options that provide almost identical experiences with a fraction of the crowds.

I have a deeper post on hiking options in Sedona , so make sure to check that out for lots more details on each hike, tips, and more.  I’ll share topline info below on a few of the most famous/popular hikes as well as some more under-the-radar ones (and a couple I don’t think were worth my time).

Your Sedona itinerary should include some opportune hiking

We’ll start with a couple super popular and iconic hikes , including Cathedral Rock and the Airport Mesa/Vortex.  The challenge with the really popular trails (particularly Cathedral Rock and Devil’s Bridge) is that the trails will typically be very crowded, parking can be a nightmare, and you’ll often have to wait in line to get that magical photo you imagine.

That’s not to say you shouldn’t do them, just that you need to be aware of that and plan ahead.  Time of day makes a big difference…for instance I decided to do Cathedral Rock at sunrise .  There were no crowds and parking wasn’t an issue, plus the views were magnificent (it was a little nerve wracking at times though).

Conversely, the ultra popular Airport Mesa and Vortex at sunset is crowded, yes, but still totally doable.  While the trailhead parking lot is only like 10 spots, there’s a giant parking lot at the top of the hill (by the airport) and you can hike down.  (I’ve also heard this hike is gorgeous for sunrise, and far less crowded.)

Check out my deeper posts on Cathedral Rock and Airport Vortex for details!

And then there are many hikes that are not intensely popular (and crowded) and also quite easy to do.

First off is Sugarloaf Loop Trail , which was a total surprise—not crowded at all, an easy walk, and absolutely stunning 360-degree views!  Check out my deeper post on why I think Sugarloaf Loop Trail is maybe the most underrated hike in Sedona (second pic below, for reference).

Another favorite that I discovered was Kachina Woman , which is just a little ways along the much larger Boynton Canyon Trail.  I did this at sunrise (well, just a bit past sunrise as it took longer than I thought from the hotel).  I was staying at Enchantment Resort so hiked from there, but if you hiked from the trailhead it would only take maybe 15 minutes.

But there were some hikes in Sedona that I would skip next time, they just didn’t “do it” for me.

I tried the famous “7 Sacred Pools” and “Devil’s Sinkhole” hikes (which are close to each other) and…guys, I don’t get it.  Granted, it took me WAY longer to find them than I’d hoped, so the mid-morning light didn’t do them any favors.  But honestly I truly don’t understand the hype (a few pics below).

I hiked to them along the Soldier’s Pass / Cibola Pass / Jordan Road trailhead …honestly I don’t know other than I parked at Jordan Road trailhead.  Following the signs was super confusing and I hiked way further than I should have (and didn’t have water), had trouble figuring out where I was going, and the scenery was lackluster.  These hikes are a skip to me.

Similarly, the “official” Fay Canyon hike is nothing to write home about (though has shade a lot).  However, if you go past the “end of trail” sign like most people and scramble up the rocks, there’s an AWESOME view—that’s where I took the selfie at the beginning of this hiking section.  I can’t *officially* recommend that you go past the sign though 🙂

And large swaths of Boynton Canyon were pretty but nothing special compared to other hikes I did in Sedona.  However, there are specific places you can get to, like the Subway Cave and Kachina Woman, that are totally worth it.  I just wouldn’t go out of my way to hike Boynton Canyon Trail overall.

What to do in Sedona - 7 Sacred Pools hike was overrated

Because Sedona sits in a kind of ring of gorgeous red rock outcroppings, you can get an amazing sunrise AND sunset in many directions.  The key is planning ahead, and also making sure you don’t strand yourself somewhere dangerous (in terms of falling, hiking, etc.) in the dark.

My favorite sunset was definitely from the Airport Vortex…while I couldn’t feel the vortex, the beautiful golden sunset gave me all the good vibes I needed.  Right up the hill you can get a similar view without hiking at the Sedona Airport Scenic Overlook.

Visit the nearby wineries

I’ll be honest…”wine” was not the first thing that comes to mind when I’m planning a trip to Arizona.  But I found myself absolutely charmed by the pretty, chill smattering of wineries near Sedona.

I mentioned Alcantara Vineyards at the top, as it’s a little more out of the way and makes a good stop between Phoenix and Sedona (though can be easily visited on a day trip as well).  Besides that, I found four other great wineries all clustered together, about 20 minutes from Sedona.

Across the board I found the winery visits here to be more of a DIY tasting experience.  There wasn’t really someone there to give you lots of details about the wine, what made it special, tasting notes, etc.  I tended to get more of a “this is our ____ wine, here’s your pour, enjoy!” kind of thing.  I was there on a weekend so it was fairly busy, and that may have made a difference.

Check out my in-depth post on visiting Sedona wineries!

Hands down, D.A. Ranch Lodge & Estate Vineyards was my favorite of the Sedona wineries, with its fun and welcoming atmosphere (felt like hanging at a friend’s house), sprawling grounds, and music to keep me company.  Javelina Leap , while smaller, gave off a similar vibe of just hanging in someone’s backyard, and had a great blues musician to boot.

Oak Creek Vineyards & Winery had great “build your own flight” options and some snacks (I was feeling peckish by this point), while Page Spring Cellars had a lot going for it but my lack of planning made it harder to enjoy.  It was absolutely SLAMMED when I got there, so I would have had to wait over an hour to do a tasting.  Instead I opted for a by-the-glass at the snack stand window (still a solid wait).

To that point, a planning word to the wise, the wineries all get VERY busy on weekends (at least during peak season), so it’s not a bad idea to actually book a tasting ahead of time at somewhere like Page Spring.

And, if you’re worried about driving yourself and drinking, there are a few winery tour companies in the area who can take care of that (and reserving spots).  I share a few options in my deeper post about Sedona winery visits .

Relax…soak in the local shops

I’m not a big shopper myself, but if you are then Sedona’s got some fun options.  The main street of Sedona (which you’ll see referred to as both Uptown and Downtown Sedona) is full of art galleries, restaurants, and souvenir and crystal shops.

You should also check out Tlaquepaque Village, which is a crazy busy and crowded area but supposed to be the must-visit for art galleries and restaurants.

Where to eat & drink in Sedona

I’ll start by saying that I wasn’t able to try many of the restaurants I wanted (such as Mariposa and Elote), as they didn’t have reservations available.  To that point as I mentioned at the outset…RESERVATIONS!

Sedona is known for an up-and-coming foodie scene focused on interesting Southwest cuisine, using locally-sourced ingredients.  I’ve written a much deeper post on where to eat and drink in Sedona , and at the end I provide a list of restaurants I wanted to try (to help you plan your own trip).

I enjoyed drinks and appetizers at Tii Gavo, breakfast at Salt Rock (though would have loved dinner and cocktails here), and casual meals at Dellepiane, The Pump House, and Creekside Bistro were all delicious.  A bit further afield (down by the wineries), Up the Creek Bistro was a total winner as well!

Things to do in Sedona, Arizona - the foodie scene here is great

Check out the beautiful & unique “Capital Cities” coffee table book!

I did make a point of trying different coffee shops and bakeries each morning, and got a nice little routine either pre- or post-hike.  Or both, NO JUDGING.

I definitely recommend Layla’s, which had awesome pastries and interesting coffee drinks (plus a small but cool looking sandwich menu).  My favorite coffee shop in Sedona closed a few months later (Creekside Coffee), but I *can* recommend the incredibly quickly and hippie Synergy.

The one fancy meal I’ll shout-out was at Che Ah Chi , at the Enchantment Resort where I was staying.  The views of the red rocks are beautiful (though the direction the patio faces is away from the sunset), and the menu is really interesting.

The cocktails and menu were quite interesting (buttered popcorn puree!), though the execution of some dishes was a little more hit and miss.  The lemon goat cheese panna cotta was a total winner!

Tlaquepaque Arts and Crafts Village, with vintage adobe style architecture

Day 1 Of Your 2 Days in Sedona Itinerary

Morning of day 1 in sedona, breakfast/brunch.

On day 1 of your 2 days in Sedona, have a Southwestern-themed brunch at SaltRock Kitchen in the Amara Resort.

Or, indulge in coffee and treats at Chocolatree . At Chocolatree, the organic dishes are unique and prepared with farm to table ingredients.

Tlaquepaque

Then head to the high end market, Tlaquepaque Arts and Crafts Village . It will blow you away with its galleries, fine arts, and stunning jewelry and ceramics.

The village is designed along the architectural lines of a Colonial Mexican village, with vintage adobe buildings and quaint courtyards. It’s been a Sedona landmark since 1970.

The village is home to dozens of exclusive shops, restaurants, boutiques, and art galleries. You’ll find jewelry, basketry, pottery, weavings, Navajo rugs, wine, etc. One of my favorite galleries was  Azadi .

sculpture at Tlaquepaque

You’ll likely want to spend 2-3 hours wandering around and inspecting (and maybe buying) the goods.

I would just stay at the village for lunch.

You can grab lunch in the village at  El Rincon , the  Secret Garden Cafe , or the  Pump House . Wine lovers should head to  Rene Restaurant .

The Secret Garden Cafe is the most quaint. The restaurant serves up farm to table food. It has a beautiful patio. You’ll feel wrapped in a lush garden with colorful flowers.

Afternoon of Day 1 In Sedona

In the afternoon of day 1 of 2 days in Sedona, take on one of Sedona’s famous hikes. Chose between either Devil’s Bridge or Airport Mesa.

Both of them are beautiful around sunset. If you’d rather catch the sunrise in the morning, flip flop the order of events for day 1 in Sedona.

Note that you’re going to need a  Red Rock Pass  if you’re planning on doing any   hiking in Sedona .  It’s required to park at certain trailheads. You can figure out where to buy one  here .

Devil's Bridge, a must do hike with 2 days in Sedona

Devil’s Bridge

Devil’s feels like a wonder of the world. That makes it the most iconic and popular hike in Sedona. But it’s worth braving the crowds to see the bridge itself.

Most people arrive bright and early in the morning. That’s why I have it planned for the late afternoon.

Devi’s Bridge is the largest natural sandstone arch in the Sedona area. Don’t let its name fool you. It’s heavenly, not devil-y.

Devil's Bridge

From a trailhead elevation of 4,600 feet, there’s a mere 400 foot climb in altitude during this moderately difficult, 4.4 roundtrip trek. It may take 2-3 hours for the hike.

The journey to reach the top won’t leave you breathless. But you may well be breathless when you look out on the views from your perch.

How To Get There :

To get to the trail, drive down Dry Creek Road for a short distance and park in the paved parking lot.

Then, walk along the trail until you get to the Devil’s Bridge Trailhead. If you have a 4WD vehicle, you can access the trail from the Devil’s Bridge Trailhead and it’s a shorter hike.

Airport Mesa

Airport Mesa

Airport Mesa is the most visited trail in Sedona, likely because it’s close to the town center and is a vortex site. The Airport Loop trail is a rocky 3.5 mile moderate hike. There’s also an outlook where you can park.

If you hike to the top, Airport Mesa offers outstanding sunset views, though it may be crowded. The sun paints everything around you in a fierce red.

You can sit on the sandstone and stare out across the dizzying grandeur of the high desert landscape. The reward is a panoramic view of Cathedral Rock.

Airport Mesa Vortex Trail in Sedona

You’ll also see twisted juniper trees. Some people have claimed to see colored orbs. At night, the stars seem close enough to touch.

How To Get There:

From the intersection of State Routes 89A and 179, go 1.1 miles west on 89A. Turn left when you reach Airport Road. It’s about a half mile to the parking lot, which will be on your left.

Chapel of The Holy Cross

If you love architecture, you’ll should next drive out to the  Chapel of the Holy Cross . It’s an unmissable attraction in Sedona that’s super easy to find and close to Uptown.

sedona trip reddit

Built in 1956, it’s a striking landmark designed by Marguerite Brunswig Staude, a pupil of  Frank Lloyd Wright .

The building looks like a concrete spaceship jutting out of craggy boulders. It blends a 90 foot cross, magnificent stained glass windows, and a modern design.

It’s perched on a red rock plateau and a sandstone ridge of varying shades. Inside, you can pray, meditate, or sit quietly.

Even if you’re short on time, stop by quickly to marvel at the structure. There’s parking along the road leading to the chapel, but it’s limited.

view of red rock formations from Chapel of the Holy Cross

You have to hike up a walkway to get there. If it’s too steep, there are golf carts available to take you up.

The chapel is open 9:00 am to 5:00 pm and is free of charge. The views from the top are mesmerizing. The “energy” of the vortex is supposedly strongest inside the chapel, which one might expect from a harmonious calming space.

The chapel is super easy to get to. From Sedona, head south on 79 about 3 miles. Turn left on Chapel Road. Follow the winding road to the parking spaces.

Elote, a great restaurant in Sedona

Evening Of Day 1 in Sedona

Then, have dinner with a sunset view. You can head to Elote .

It’s an intimate restaurant with great Mexican and Southwestern food. But you can’t make a reservation. As a result, it’s often hard to score a table.

Another good dinner option, which I really loved was Cucina Rustica in Oak Creek Canyon Village. The restaurant is Italian-themed, with daily specials, and indoor-outdoor seating. You should make reservations in advance.

stars over Cathedral Rock

When night falls in Sedona, you have a different kind of visual drama. So consider going stargazing.

In 2014, Sedona was designated an international Dark Sky Community, one of only 20+ in the world. This is an honor given to cities that are dedicated to preserving the night sky.

The Thunder Mountain Trailhead is a good place to watch the sun set and star gaze. There’s also an observation area, Two Trees, just off state route 89.

You might also consider going on a stargazing tour . Or go on a guided tour that combines stargazing and UFOs .

Cathedral Rock

Day 2 Of Your 2 Days in Sedona Itinerary

Morning of day 2, morning hike or pink jeep tour.

The morning of day 2 in Sedona, choose whether you want to hike to Cathedral Rock or go on a Pink Jeep Tour.

It’s a tough choice. Cathedral Rock is the most photographed place in Sedona. The jeep tours are pure fun and an iconic thing to do in Sedona.

Cathedral Rock

Option 1: Cathedral Rock Hike

Cathedral Rock has red spires lofting over Oak Creek. It’s almost impossible not to be drawn to this butte’s towering orange spires.

The approximately 1,200 foot high Cathedral Rock looms dramatically over almost every part of town.

The Cathedral Rock trail is easy to navigate. It’s a vigorous but non-technical 1.5 scramble up the rock.

Cathedral Rock at Oat Creek in Sedona Arizona

After your climb, you’ll have a nearly 360 views of the red rock country. Rock piles called cairns mark the trail.

How To Get There

From the junction of State Route 89A ad 179, drive 4.5 miles west. When you reach the Upper Red Rock Loop Road, turn left.

Then, drive 1.8 miles to Chavez Ranch Road. Turn left and follow the road .8 miles. Turn left into Crescent Moon Park. Drive as afar as possible, then walk to the creek.

caravan of Pink Jeep Tours vehicles on Schnebly Hill Road

Option 2: Pink Jeep Tours

Don’t want to hike? No problem. Take a jeep tour.

It’s an iconic Sedona experience and there are SO many options. You can pick one that calls to you or revs up your adrenaline.

The jeep tours are a fun way to explore Sedona’s landscapes, especially for first timers. The 4WD takes you on off road adventures where you can get deep inside the luminous red landscapes.

There are so many options to choose from. I went on this  Pink Jeeps tour , which goes into the red rocks range.

This  tour  takes you to the ancient ruins, including the Palatki Heritage site. This  tour  takes you to Diamondback Gultch for red rock views.

stop on Pink Jeep tour in the Red Rock Range

Another   jeep tour   takes you to beautiful Oak Creek Canyon. More adventurous types can do an  off road jeep tour .

Want to check out the vortexes by jeep and see if you get their woo woo vibe? No problem.

You can take a regular organized  jeep tour  to explore the vortexes. If you don’t want to go in a group, you can book a  private vortex tour .

You can also take a  spiritual tour  or  chakra tour  that includes mindfulness and/or mediation on the vortexes.

classic pink jeep

Alternatively, to see all the vortexes, take a sunrise or sunset  hot air balloon ride .

Pro tip? The jeep tours book up fast so reserve a couple weeks in advance.

When you’re done hiking or jeeping, have lunch at 89Agave in Uptown, which is your next destination.

Day 2 Afternoon

Start your day in Sedona’s funky Uptown. Wander around the strip of funky stores in Uptown Sedona. Cute shops and galleries sell crystals, fine art, ceramics, and new age paraphernalia.

Uptown Sedona

Sedona Candle Magic  is always packed. There are spiritual healers available for hire, from psychic mediums to reiki healers.

If the spirituality thing isn’t your jam, I’d recommend popping into a hidden gem called  Blackbird Vintage , right off the main drag in Sedona.

Parking can be at a premium along here, especially on weekends. But there is a parking garage where you can usually find a spot.

Crystal Grotto in Mii Amo Spa

Day 2 Later Afternoon

There are a couple options for late afternoon. You can either pamper yourself or indulge in a wine tasting.

Option 1: Wellness and Pampering

Sedona is a hub of wellness, spirituality, and healing, which is a perfect way to end your 2 days in Sedona. You’ll find all sorts of alternative medicines and practices in Sedona, from rejuvenating bodywork to past life workshops.

Sedona also boasts some of the nation’s best healers. You can get a  Reiki treatment ,   Qigong healing , a custom  spa treatment , or get  Jin Shin Jyutsu acupressure .

Do  outdoor yoga or a full moon meditation . Or, inhale the benefits of  halotherapy  in a salt room. Alternatively, head to Mii Amo Spa .

crystals in the Center for the New Age

If you’re more metaphysical, get a psychic reading at the  Center for the New Age  next to Tlaquepaque Arts and Crafts Village. It’s a serene little shop full of crystals, fountains, tarot cards, flute music, and dreamy-eyed patrons.

You can hire the services as a master clairvoyant, psychic healer, or shaman priestess. Appointments are 15, 30, or 60 minutes long.

Option 2: Wine Tasting Alternative

Alternatively, if you don’t want to be pampered, you could go on a wine tour. Did you know that the Verde Valley region is famous for its wines?

There are several tours you can book from Sedona:

  • a 5-6 hour Verde Valley wine tour from Sedona
  • take a wine + vortex tou r
  • take a private wine tour with Bliss Wine

tasting room in Vino Zona

You can also do a wine tasting at Vino Zona in Talaquepaqe. The folks are extremely knowledgeable. I bought a couple blends they recommended to bring home and they were delicious.

Day 2 in Sedona Evening

On your last evening in Sedona, splurge on dinner at Sedona’s best restaurant, the Mariposa Grill . Just don’t turn up in hiking gear or you’ll be turned away.

You’ve got to be organized to eat here. You should make reservations weeks in advance or you’ll be disappointed.

Bell Rock Vortex

What About Those Vortexes In Sedona?

What are the Sedona vortexes exactly? And do you want to explore them? Vortex isn’t really a term of art. It’s just a nickname that stuck.

Vortexes are energy sites or meditative places. They are locations where a swirling condensed center of spiritual energy allegedly projects out of the earth.

Vortexes are thought to enhance energy and provide spiritual inspiration and well being to those who are near them.

the Boynton Canyon Trail and Vortex

But there’s really no hard science behind vortexes. No instrument has ever measured the force in these “power spots.” There’s no actual magnetism or energy at the vortexes.

In the 1960s, word started to spread in the United States among spiritual seekers to visit Sedona’s “high energy meditation sites.” In 1979, the psychic Page Bryant identified the four most popular and accessible vortexes.

Since then, seekers have descended on Sedona with the town’s transformative healing on their minds.

Here’s my complete guide to the vortexes of Sedona .

Tips For A 2 Days In Sedona Itinerary

1. how to get to sedona.

I drove to Sedona from Tucson.

If you’re flying in, the best option is to fly into Phoenix (Sky Harbor–Phoenix).

Then, make the two hour drive from there to Sedona. You can also book a private transfer to Phoenix .

Flying into Phoenix offers the most flight options and gives you the best rental car prices and options.

2. How To Get Around Sedona

It’s easiest to have a car in Sedona. You might even considered renting an off road vehicle. Some sites are only accessible with an ATV.

Kachina Woman rock formation in Boynton Canyon

You can also get around with the Verde Shuttle bus. The routes travel through Uptown, Oak Creek canyon and West Sedona. You’ll need to check the schedule and might have to wait.

If you’re in one neighborhood (like Uptown or Oak Creek), it’s easy to walk everywhere.

There are also some other fun ways to explore Sedona too. You can:

  • take a half day tour in an open air bus
  • take a self-guided e-bike tour
  • take a private 4 hour van tour of the best sites
  • take a 2.5 hour highlights tour by van
  • go on a nighttime UFO tour
  • or take a ride on the Sedona trolley

3. When To Visit Sedona

The best time to visit Sedona is shoulder season in March through May. The desert is in full bloom. Hikers love this season, as desert flowers add a pop of color to the rust-colored trails.

September to November is another ideal time for outdoor activities like Jeep tours   and biking thanks to mild weather.

That said, I just visited Sedona again in February. There were blue skies and a high of 60. To me, it seemed perfect.

Amara Resort in Sedona

4. Where To Stay In Sedona

On my last visit, I stayed in a beautiful  Air Bnb  in Oak Creek Canyon. I liked it since it was incredibly scenic and away from the crowds of Uptown.

But Sedona also has some wonderful resorts —  Sky Ranch Lodge ,  Amara Resort ,   L’Auberge de Sedona , and  Enchantment Resort .

Enchantment Resort is in Boynton Canyon. It has one of the area’s best spas  Mii Amo , plus a yoga studio. There’s so many things to do in Sedona that you may need some R&R.

entrance to Mii Amo Spa

There’s a room called the Crystal Grotto to sit in and meditate. There are more types of cutting-edge massages, facials and yoga programs available here than you thought existed in the world.

Amara is a better choice if you want a central location. It’s a French country inn right in the heart of Uptown, just minutes from the galleries and restaurants.

L’Auberge is a luxury resort set on the banks of Oak Creek. The hotel has a special focus on wellness and rejuvenation.

5. Have Than 2 Days In Sedona?

There are plenty of destinations near Sedona.

1.   Flagstaff

Take a day trip to Flagstaff. The town is just 50 miles north of Sedona.

Flagstaff is jam packed with beauty, history, and architecture. The town is an unusual alpine beauty 7000 feet high in the foothills.

This historic town is well worth a day trip, if you have time in your  Southwest itinerary . It may be one of Arizona’s best kept secrets.

Flagstaff has pretty Victorian mansions to admire. If you want a dose of Southwest art, head to the Museum of Northern Arizona, Old Main Gallery, or the Beaver Street Gallery.

If you fancy a hike, take the low key Viet Springs loop.

the Yavapai County Courthouse Square in Prescott

2. Prescott

Prescott is a quaint and cool town in Arizona, just 1:20 from Sedona. Founded in 1864, Prescott has more than 800 buildings on the National Register of Historic Places.

In particular, the town is home to Arizona’s famous  Whiskey Row . This stretch of road on south Montezuma Street once housed 40+ bars. The oldest whiskey bar is  The Palace , which opened in 1877.

Nowadays, Prescott isn’t that wild. You’ll find plenty of ice cream and fudge shops, boutiques, and art galleries. If you wander down from the main plaza to Cortez Street, you’ll find Antique Row.

winding mountain road into Jerome

The not quite “ghost town” of Jerome is a former copper mining town that thrived during the 1880s to the 1950s. You access the town via the twisty Mingus Mountain with (slightly hair raising) switchback roads.

The view out over the valley is gorgeous. There’s only one pull off though. Otherwise, if you’re driving, keep your eyes on the road!

Today’s Jerome is somewhat gentrified and a haven for artists. You’ll find art galleries, artisan shops, boutiques, and restaurants. My favorite gallery was  Firefly .

the main drag in Jerome

Jerome is still a real town though with full time residents. You can take a  ghost tour  in Jerome.

Or, learn about the history of Jerome at the Jerome State Historic park. If you want to book a tour, click  here  for a tour exploring historic Jerome.

Here’s my complete guide to visiting Jerome .

Montezuma Castle

4. Montezuma Castle National Monument

Established in 1906,  Montezuma Castle  is one of the top attractions near Sedona. It’s the third National Monument dedicated to preserving Native American culture.

It’s 20 room high rise apartment, nestled into a towering limestone cliff. The castle tells a story of ingenuity and survival in an unforgiving desert landscape.

Despite the name, there’s no connection between the monument and the famous Aztec leader.

A self-guided loop trail leads you past the incredible five story cliff dwelling, through the sycamore grove and along Beaver Creek. Another loop leads you past an oasis used by the Sinagua people over 600 years ago. You can also take a 25 minute ranger tour.

There’s wildlife in the park. Also, there’s a sign warning you to be careful of rattlesnakes.

You can see both Jerome and Montezuma’s Castle on a  day tour  from Sedona.

Drive along the Red Rock Scenic Byway Drive along the Red Rock Scenic Byway free

The 7.5-mile Red Rock Scenic Byway has plenty to see and do. In fact, it's often referred to as a "museum without walls."

To reach the Red Rock Scenic Byway, also known as State Route 179, head about 11 miles south of central Sedona. The byway starts after you take exit 298 off Interstate 17.

Cathedral Rock Cathedral Rock

Cathedral Rock is known as one of Sedona's four vortexes (the other three include Bell Rock , Airport Mesa and Boynton Canyon ). Some believe that vortexes are places where the earth emits an energy that fosters healing, meditation and self-exploration. Though all of Sedona is considered to be a vortex, there are certain areas, such as Cathedral Rock, where the energy is said to be the strongest. Many past visitors have claimed to feel tingly sensations while hiking here; others have felt nothing.

The 1.2-mile out-and-back trail to Cathedral Rock, which is located about 2 miles west of the Chapel of the Holy Cross , is very popular and busy, according to past visitors. Recent travelers described the hike up as strenuous – in some places difficult, as you have to scramble over some rocks on an incline. But once you get to the top, the views are spectacular. (Just don't expect solitude once you arrive.) Make sure you wear proper hiking boots as the sandstone and loose rocks can get slippery at times. Reviewers say it will take about an hour to get to the top of Cathedral Rock. According to travelers, it's a great place to take photos of the surrounding red rocks – even amateur photographers will not be disappointed.

Red Rock State Park Red Rock State Park

Although Sedona is surrounded by towering red rock formations, many recent visitors recommend a trip to the official Red Rock State Park specifically to see Cathedral Rock – one of Arizona's most famous landmarks.

This 286-acre nature preserve – located about 10 miles southwest of the "Y" (the intersection of routes 89A and 179) along Oak Creek – boasts great views of Sedona's more famous formations. The park offers a 5-mile trail network that is composed of interconnecting looped trails. The Eagle's Nest Loop leads to the highest point in the park with an elevation gain of about 300 feet. Stop in at the visitor center to learn about the area's history, guided nature walks and moonlit hikes.

Climbing on top of Airport Mesa (also known as Table Top Mountain) will take your breath away, and it's not because of the climb itself. Here, you will enjoy 360-degree views of Sedona, including West Sedona, Capitol Butte and Wilson Mountain.

Chapel of the Holy Cross Chapel of the Holy Cross free

If you only have time for one cultural site, the Chapel of the Holy Cross should be it. This stunning church – designed by sculptor Marguerite Brunswig Staude (a student of architect Frank Lloyd Wright) in the 1950s – protrudes from the red cliffs less than 4 miles south of Sedona's "Y" intersection. The main stained-glass window is held together by a giant cross and overlooks the Verde Valley.

Along with admiring the chapel, you can also take a moderate hike here. The Chapel Trail is a 1.3-mile out-and-back hike that starts at the chapel's parking lot and promises views of the surrounding red buttes. Past hikers warn that it's a rocky path and suggest that if you are looking for something easier you take the steep, 0.1-mile path up to the observation area at the chapel.

Go off-roading with Pink Adventure Tours Go off-roading with Pink Adventure Tours

Sedona is known for its off-roading adventures – specifically Pink Jeep Tours, which have become synonymous with the area. One of the  best Jeep tours in Sedona , Pink Jeep Tours offers a variety of experiences that vary by theme and activity level. Tours range from mild, such as the Ancient Ruin tour that includes a hike to the Honanki Heritage Site, to wild, such as the popular Broken Arrow tour. This two-hour excursion traverses rocks, ruts and roots, as well as remote areas of Coconino National Forest. There's also the more rugged Diamondback Gulch tour, which travels on a century-old backcountry wagon trail before descending into Diamondback Gulch, a deep ravine.

Reviewers rave about the funny, knowledgeable guides and say a Jeep tour is a must-do in Sedona thanks to the stunning scenery that's only accessible via Jeep. Others cautioned that the ride can be bumpy at times, and warn that this experience may not be suitable for all travelers.

Devil's Bridge is a must-see on everyone's Sedona bucket list. Formed by wind and weather erosion, it's the largest natural sandstone arch in the Sedona area. As such, it is one of the busiest hiking trails in Sedona. According to visitors, the parking lot fills up before 7 a.m. most days. To avoid parking hassles, hop on the Sedona Shuttle . Free parking is provided at Posse Grounds Park in West Sedona and from there hikers can take the Dry Creek Trailhead Shuttle (Routes 11 or 12). The service operates Thursday through Sunday and is free and open to the public. The shuttle runs about every 15 to 30 minutes throughout the day that will take you from a safe, accessible parking lot right to the trailhead.

Tlaquepaque Arts & Shopping Village Tlaquepaque Arts & Shopping Village free

When you need a break from the trails, swap out those hiking boots for something more fetching and head to the Tlaquepaque Arts & Shopping Village (pronounced T-la-keh-pah-keh). Perched at the intersection of routes 89A and 179, this sizable outdoor shopping center was designed in the style of a traditional Mexican village. The complex was built on a former sycamore grove, and special care was given to maintain the existing trees. As a result, many of the village's structures are built around the sycamores, making way for interesting architecture and forgiving shade. The stucco walls house a variety of art galleries, retail shops selling modern art and glassware, and restaurants, while the cobblestone streets and mosaic fountains provide a charming, old-fashioned atmosphere.

Many travelers highly recommend spending a few hours perusing Tlaquepaque and checking out the local handmade jewelry, food, music and especially the art. Though many felt the wares sold here were too high-priced, reviewers still suggested a visit for the restaurants and architecture. Many of the best tours in Sedona stop here.

For a glimpse of what life was like in the red rocks between A.D. 1150 and 1350, take a drive to the Palatki Heritage Site. These ancient cliff dwellings were once the home of the Sinagua people of the Ancestral Puebloans and are now among the largest cave dwellings in the area. The pictographs that cover the walls of the site impress many visitors. Recent travelers also praised the informative and enthusiastic staff, but warn that the road to reach the ruins is quite bumpy.

Bell Rock Bell Rock

Upon your arrival into Sedona via State Route 179, you'll be greeted by the iconic bell-shaped rock formation known – appropriately enough – as Bell Rock. It's a popular first stop for visitors, as the landscape is likely to take your breath away. No matter what time of day you arrive, the lighting on the majestic red-hued mountains is ever-changing. In the background you can spot the "Rabbit Ears" rock formation in the distance, which makes for an excellent photograph, especially at dawn or dusk.

The 3.6-mile trail tends to get busy, as it is one of the most popular destinations for Sedona travelers. There are a few trails that connect to Bell Rock, including Courthouse Butte, where hikers can take a nearly 4-mile loop around both monoliths.

sedona trip reddit

Slide Rock State Park Slide Rock State Park

For those of you visiting Sedona during the hot summer months, a few hours at Slide Rock State Park is a must. Housed on land that formerly grew apple trees, the park earned its name from the stretch of its slippery creek bed near the original homestead that now acts as a natural waterslide measuring 80 feet in length. Visitors can cruise down the creek on a tube or on their own, or simply enjoy the sun along the rock bed. Beyond the natural waterslide, the park is home to numerous natural swimming pools. The farm's old homestead is also open to exploration.

Some travelers lament over the at times crowded conditions, but still, many say the park is worth visiting, especially with kids. Visitors often bring their families and spend the entire day at the park soaking up the sun and swimming in the chilly water. Others caution that water shoes with good grip are a must as you'll be slipping and sliding any time you're near the wet, algae-covered rocks (a few reviewers reported getting injured or seeing others sustain injuries from sliding on the rocks, so watch your step). To avoid the crowds and secure a parking spot, heed the advice of reviewers and arrive early.

Boynton Canyon Boynton Canyon

Boynton Canyon Trail is one of Sedona's many amazing hikes. It's a moderate, 6.1-mile out-and-back trail that offers beautiful green scenery, surrounded by red canyon walls at the end with a steady incline throughout. According to travelers, you'll want to budget about 2.5 hours to complete the hike.

Boynton Canyon Trailhead is located about 10 minutes from West Sedona and is located on Boynton Canyon Road. It has a paved parking lot with a restroom. Past hikers recommend getting there early in the morning as the parking lot fills up quickly. Because of the trail's popularity, you'll likely encounter other people while hiking. In addition to securing a parking spot, an early arrival will ensure a more pleasant hiking experience (the temperatures only get hotter as the day progresses). Note that bikes are not allowed on this trail and dogs must be on a leash.
