BACKGROUND: Targeted therapies achieved great success in managing breast cancer, however, triple negative breast cancers (TNBCs) lack the expression of traditional therapeutic targets, and other subtypes develop resistance to current therapies. The c-MET receptor emerged as a potential target with well documented pro-proliferative pro-motility downstream signals and wide network of crosstalk with other effectors. Some reports describe a preferential expression of c-MET in TNBCs and promising results in early anti-c-MET clinical trials. However, the main cause of failure of these trials was attributed to patient selection. AIM: The objectives of the study were to assessment of c-MET in subtypes of breast cancer and its association with other clinicopathological variables that may predict its expression and possibly establish other rationales to refine patient selection for clinical trials. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Retrospective immunohistochemical study assessing c-MET (clone SP44) in ...

One of the reasons Rohingya refugees were saved from the sea in the Province of Aceh is based on humanity; nevertheless, the stakeholder management on the ground tends to ,dismiss the importance of the humanistic dimension. It includes challenges of the state in providing assistance, the limitation for resettlement, job opportunity prohibition, limited development of skills, and partnership challenges in the field. This paper addresses the practical implementation of managing refugees at the local level towards the six domains of the humanistic dimension through the Spider Web configuration. It allowed relevant stakeholders in the province to analyze their challenges, address their limitations and measure their practical action in locally managing Rohingya refugees. The result showed that the most important humanistic domain in managing refugees was a partnership with stakeholders followed by the resettlement process. At the same time, the region considered labor opportunity, not an...

#1 Self-drive tours in USA Transcript

The Part 1 audio script of Self-drive tours in USA in Listening Test 1 is as follows:

TRAVEL AGENT:   Good morning. World Tours. My name is Jamie. How can I help you?

ANDREA:             Good morning. I want some information on self-drive tours in the USA. Could you send me a brochure?

TRAVEL AGENT:   Of course. Could you I have your name please?

ANDREA:             Andrea  Brown . (Example)

TRAVEL AGENT:   Thank you. And your address?

ANDREA:             24,  Ardleigh   Road.  (Q1)

TRAVEL AGENT:   Can you spell that?

ANDREA:             A-R-D-L-E-I-G-H Road.

TRAVEL AGENT:   Postcode?

ANDREA:             BH5 2OP

TRAVEL AGENT:   Thanks. And can I have your phone number?

ANDREA:             Is a mobile alright?

TRAVEL AGENT:   Fine.

ANDREA:             It’s 07786643091.

TRAVEL AGENT:   Thank you. And can I ask you where you heard about World Tours? From a friend? Or did you see an advert somewhere?

ANDREA:             No, I read about you in the  newspaper . (Q2)

TRAVEL AGENT:   OK, I’ll get the brochures in the post to you but can I give you some information over the phone. What kinds of things do you want to do on your holiday?

ANDREA:             I’m interested in going to California with my family . I’ve got two children and we want to hire a car.

TRAVEL AGENT:   OK. We have a couple of self-drive tours there visiting different places of interest in California. The first one begins in Los Angeles and there’s plenty of time to visit some of the  theme  (Q3)  parks there.

ANDREA:             That’s something on my children’s list so I’d want to include that.

TRAVEL AGENT:   Good. Then you drive to San Francisco. From San Francisco you can drive to Yosemite Park where you spend a couple of nights. You can choose to stay in a lodge or on the campsite.

ANDREA:             I don’t like the idea of staying in a  tent  (Q4) . It’d be too hot.

TRAVEL AGENT:   Right. And the tour ends in Las Vegas.

ANDREA:             OK.

TRAVEL AGENT:   The other trip we can arrange is slightly different. It starts in San Francisco. Then you drive south to Cambria.

ANDREA:             Someone told me there’s a really nice  castle  (Q5)  near Cambria. Will we go near that?

TRAVEL AGENT:   Hearst Castle is on that road so you could stop there.

ANDREA:             Good. I’d like to do that. Does this trip also go into the desert?

TRAVEL AGENT:   No, it continues to Santa Monica where most people like to stop and do some shopping.

ANDREA:             We have enough of that at home so that doesn’t interest us.

TRAVEL AGENT:   OK. Well you could go straight on to San Diego.

ANDREA:             That’s good for  beaches  isn’t it?  (Q6)

TRAVEL AGENT:   That’s right, that’s a good place to relax and your children might like to visit the zoo before flying home.

ANDREA:             I don’t think so. We want some time for sunbathing and swimming.

ANDREA:             So how many days are the trips and how much do they cost?

TRAVEL AGENT:   The first one I told you about is a self-drive tour through California which lasts twelve days and covers  2,020  (Q7)  kilometres. The shortest journey is 206 km and the longest is 632 kilometres. The cost is £525 per person. That includes accommodation, car rental and a  flight  (Q8)  but no meals.

ANDREA:             OK. And the other trip?

TRAVEL AGENT:   That lasts nine days but you spend only three days on the road. You cover about 980 kilometres altogether.

ANDREA:             So is that cheaper then?

TRAVEL AGENT:   Yes, it’s almost a hundred pounds cheaper. It’s £ 429  (Q9)  per person, which is a good deal.

ANDREA:             So that covers accommodation and car hire. What about flights?

TRAVEL AGENT:   They aren’t included. But these hotels offer  dinner  (Q10)  in the price.

ANDREA:             OK. Well, thank you very much. I’ll be in touch when I’ve had a chance to look at the brochure.

TRAVEL AGENT:   I’m pleased to help. Goodbye.

ANDREA:             Goodbye.

#2 Joining the leisure club Transcript

The Part 2 audio transcript of Joining the leisure club in Cambridge 10 Listening Test 1 is as follows:

On behalf of LP Clubs, I’d like to welcome you all here today. My name’s Sandy Fisher and I’m one of the fitness managers here. Before we start our tour of the club I’ll just run through some basic information about the facilities we have here, including recent improvements, and explain the types of membership available.

Our greatest asset is probably our  swimming pool which at 25 metres isn’t Olympic-sized, but now we’ve expanded it to eight lanes, it’s much wider   (Q11&Q12) . This means there are rarely more than a couple of people at a time in each lane. Unfortunately, there isn’t space for an outdoor pool here but the glass roof on the swimming pool is partly retractable, which means you can enjoy something of the open-air experience on warmer days.

Our  recently refurbished fitness suite  (Q11&Q12)  has all the latest exercise equipment including ten new running machines, and a wide range of weight-training machines. Each member is given full training in how to operate the equipment and there is always a trainer on duty to offer help and advice. Although we do have adult-only times after 6 and at certain times at weekends, children are well catered for. Older children continue to benefit from a wide range of tuition; anything from trampolining to yoga.

One thing all our members appreciate about us is that we take very good care of them. This starts on day one with your personal assessment. You are asked to fill in a questionnaire  giving details of any health problems  (Q13) . One of our personal trainers will then go through this with you.

The trainer will then  take you through the safety rules  (Q14)  for using the equipment in the fitness suite. During your next exercise session a personal trainer will work with you to make sure you understand these. It’s very important to do this because we really do want to avoid having any sports injuries. There’s a lot more to looking after yourself than simply lifting weights!

At the end of the personal assessment,  the trainer will draw up a plan, outlining what you should try to achieve within a six-week period  (Q15) . This will then be reviewed at the end of the six weeks.

Now, I’ll just quickly run through the types of membership we have available.  All members must pay a joining fee of  £90   (Q16)  in addition to the rates for the monthly membership fees.  Gold membership entitles you to free entry at all LP Clubs   (Q17) . There are now LP clubs in all major cities and towns so if you travel a lot will be a great advantage. Individual gold membership costs £50 a month and joint membership for you and your partner will cost £75.

Premier membership is for professional people whose work commitments make it difficult for them to use the club during the day and so  LP gives booking preferences to Premier members at peak times  (Q18) . This means you will find it easier to book the sessions at times that suit you. Reciprocal arrangements with other LP Clubs are available to Premier members. Premier membership is for individuals only, but  you will be sent passes for guests every month  (Q19) . The monthly fee is £65.

You don’t have to have any special clothes or equipment when you visit the club. We provide robes and hairdryers in the changing rooms, but  it’s very important to remember your photo card  (Q20)  because you won’t be able to get in without it.

For people who aren’t working during the day then …

#3 Global Design Competition Transcript

The Part 3 audio transcript of Global Design Competition in Cambridge 10 Listening Test 1 is as follows:

JOHN:                   Erm … hello Professor, I’m John Wishart. I’m working on my entry for the Global Design Competition. My tutor said you might be able to help me with it.

PROFESSOR:       Ah, yes, I got a copy of your drawings. Come in and tell me about it. What sort of competition is it?

JOHN:                   Well, it’s an international design competition and  we have to come up with a new design for a typical domestic kitchen appliance . (Q21)

PROFESSOR:       I see, and are there any special conditions? Does it have to save energy for example?

JOHN:                   Actually that was the focus in last year’s competition. This year’s different. We have to adopt an innovative approach to existing technology, using it in a way that hasn’t been thought of before.

PROFESSOR:       I see, that sounds tricky. And what kitchen appliance have you chosen?

JOHN:                   Well, they’re an everyday kitchen appliance in most Australian houses but they’re all pretty boring and almost identical to each other.  I think some people will be prepared to pay a little extra for something that looks different . (Q22)

PROFESSOR:       That’s a nice idea. I see you’ve called your design ‘the Rockpool’; why is that?

JOHN:                   Basically because it looks like the rock pools you find on a beach. The top is made of glass so that you can look down into it.

PROFESSOR:       And there’s a stone at the bottom. Is that just for decoration?

JOHN:                   Actually it does have a function.  Instead of pushing a button, you turn the stone . (Q23)

PROFESSOR:       So it’s really just a novel way of starting the dishwasher.

JOHN:                   That’s right.

PROFESSOR:       It’s a really nice design, but what makes it innovative?

JOHN:                   Well, I decided to make a dishwasher that uses carbon dioxide.

PROFESSOR:       In place of water and detergent? How will you manage that?

JOHN:                   The idea is to pressurize the carbon dioxide so that it becomes a liquid. The fluid is then released into the dishwasher where it cleans the dishes all by itself.

PROFESSOR:       Sounds like a brilliant idea! Your system will totally do away with the need for strong detergents. So what happens once the dishes are clean?

JOHN:                   Well, to allow them to dry, the liquid carbon dioxide and the waste materials all go to an area called the holding chamber.  That’s where the liquid is depressurised and so it reverts to a gas  (Q24) . Then the oil and grease are separated out and sent to the waste system.

PROFESSOR:       It sounds like you’ve thought it all out very thoroughly. So, what happens to the carbon dioxide once the process is complete? Not wasted I hope.

JOHN:                   Actually, that’s where the real savings are made.  The carbon dioxide is sent back to the cylinder and can be used again and again . (Q25)

PROFESSOR:       What a terrific idea. Do you think it will ever be built?

JOHN:                   Probably not, but that’s OK.

PROFESSOR:       Well, I’m sure a lot of positive things will come out of your design.

——————————-

PROFESSOR:       Now, you seem to have thought about everything so what exactly did you need me to help you with?

JOHN:                   Well, my design has made it to the final stage of the competition and,  in a few months’ time. I have to give a presentation, and that’s the part I was hoping you could help me with . (Q26)

PROFESSOR:       Right, well that should be easy enough. What have you managed to do so far?

JOHN:                   Well, I’ve got detailed drawings to show how it will work and I’ve also written a 500-word paper on it.

PROFESSOR:       I see. Well,  if you want to stand a good chance of winning you really need a model of the machine . (Q27)

JOHN:                   Yes, I thought I might but I’m having a few problems.

PROFESSOR:       What is the main difficulty so far? Let me guess – is it the materials?

JOHN:                    Yes. I want it to look professional but everything that’s top quality is also very expensive . (Q28)

PROFESSOR:       Look, projects like this are very important to us. They really help lift our profile.  So why don’t you talk to the university about a grant?  (Q29)  I can help you fill out the application forms if you like.

JOHN:                   That would be a great.

PROFESSOR:        You’d better show me this paper you’ve written as well. For a global competition such as this you need to make sure the technical details you’ve given are accurate and thorough . (Q30)

JOHN:                   That would be a great help.

PROFESSOR:       Is there anything else I can do?

JOHN:                   Well, I’m really …

#4 The Spirit Bear Transcript

The Part 4 audio transcript of The Spirit Bear in Cambridge 10 Listening Test 1 is as follows:

Today we continue our series on ecology and conservation with a look at a particularly endangered member of the black bear family.  One in ten black bears is actually born with a white coat, which is the result of a special gene that surfaces in a few  (Q31) .

Local people have named it ‘the spirit bear’. And  according to the legends of these communities, its snowy fur brings with it a special power  (Q32) . Because of this, it has always been highly regarded by them – so much that they do not speak of seeing it to anyone else.  It is their way of protecting it when strangers visit the area . (Q33)

The white bear’s habitat is quite interesting. The bear’s strong relationship with the old-growth rainforest is a complex one. The white bear relies on the huge centuries-old trees in the forest in many ways. For example,  the old-growth trees have extremely long roots that help prevent erosion of the soil along the banks of the many fish streams  (Q34) .

Keeping these banks intact is important because these streams are home to salmon, which are the bear’s main food source. In return, the bear’s feeding habits nurture the forest. As the bears eat the salmon, they discard the skin and bones in great amounts on the forest floor, which provide vital nutrients. These produce lush vegetation that sustains thousands of other types of life forms, from birds to insects and more.

Today, the spirit bear lives off the coast of the province of British Columbia on a few islands  (Q35) . There is great concern for their survival since it is estimated that less than two hundred of these white bears remain. The best way to protect them is to make every effort to preserve the delicate balance of their forest environment – in other words, their ecosystem.

The greatest threat to the bear’s existence is the loss of its habitat. Over many years, logging companies have stripped the land by cutting down a large number of trees. In addition,  they have built roads which have fractured the areas where the bear usually feeds, and many hibernation sites have also been lost  (Q36) .

The logging of the trees along the streams has damaged the places where the bears fish. To make matters worse,  the number of salmon in those streams is declining because there is no legal limit on fishing at the moment . (Q37)

all these influences have a negative impact on the spirit bear’s very existence,  which is made all the more fragile by the fact that reproduction among these bears has always been disappointingly low . (Q38)

And so, what’s the situation going forward? Community organizations, environmental groups and the British Columbia government are now working together on the problem.  The government is now requiring logging companies to adopt a better logging method  (Q39) , which is a positive step. However, these measures alone may not be sufficient to ensure a healthy population of the spirit bear in the future.

Other steps also need to be taken. While it is important to maintain the spirit bear’s habitat,  there also needs to be more emphasis on its expansion  (Q40) . The move is justified as it will also create space for other bears that are losing their homes …

10 Great Self Drive Tours in the USA

This article may contain affiliate links. Read my ABOUT page for more disclosure information.

Seeing the USA by car is a road-tripper’s dream. Diverse landscapes, national parks, arterial interstates and scenic byways. There is a romance about road trips in America, and the open road stretching out in front of you is intoxicating. These 10 great self drive tours in the USA showcase the extraordinary vistas, cities and states across this great land.

My love affair with road-tripping in North America is long term and far reaching. I love how every state feels and looks different. I love how the old highways still have such a nostalgic vibrance to them. And I adore everything about roadside motels . You could call me a serial road-tripper (and not just in the USA).

The suggested self drive tours are all about 1 week in duration, although you can string some of them together to form larger road trips if you wish.

  • Starting with Savannah, Georgia . This city is full of grandeur, but also a wonderfully youthful vibe. There is a fantastic bar scene both in the tourist and student areas.
  • Continue inland towards Atlanta, but make a small detour to Juliette, Georgia. This tiny village, little more than a street, was the setting for the movie Fried Green Tomatoes (and yes, you can visit the cafe to have these specialities). Pay a visit to the quaint city of Forsyth, Georgia , too.
  • Atlanta is a beast of a city, but it does need a stop on your self drive tour. If for nothing more than to visit the Martin Luther King Jr National Monument, birthplace and Ebenezer Church. Atlanta also serves an amazing barbecue game – try Fox Bros! You’ll need 36 hours in Atlanta at least.
  • Chattanooga is a fantastic stop along your southern tour. Not only does this city have amazing attractions like Lookout Mountain and the Chattanooga Choo Choo hotel ; the barbecue at Sugar’s Ribs is so tasty. This bbq joint is in hills above Chattanooga and the view is epic.
  • Finish your road trip in Decatur, Alabama – home to Big Bob Gibson’s Bar-B-Q. Where you will find THE best plates of barbecue ever. Oh, and pie, and bbq sauce, and and and…

This self drive tour can be combined with the Smoky Mountains route easily.

California’s Highway 1

San francisco > la along california’s famous coastline (one way).

One of the most famous highways in the world is the Pacific Coast Highway , or as it’s officially known, ‘California’s Highway 1’. Whether you drive the full length from the Pacific Northwest to San Diego , or just a section – it is some of the most stunning and dramatic coastlines to road trip along.

Start with a few nights in San Francisco first. This city is diverse, vibrant, gruff, touristy, and fantastic – nothing beats a day down at Pier 39, Fisherman’s Wharf for chowder, and a trip to Alcatraz . We love it because we got married there !

Our favourite section of California’s Highway 1 is from San Francisco to San Luis Obispo – with stops in Pescadero State Beach, Monterey (overnight), Big Sur , Pfeiffer Beach State Park, Post Ranch, Nepenthe, Hearst Castle, San Simeon (overnight), Cambria and Morro Rock.

You can also choose to do this route by train on the Coast Starlight from LA to Seattle. However, we found the route to not be nearly as impressive as the Amtrak Cascades train between Seattle and Vancouver!

San Francisco architecture

Desert Vistas

I am completely in love with the desert landscapes of Arizona and Utah , so this is one of my favourite self drive tours we’ve ever done. This loop starts and ends in Las Vegas (to please the party people in your family), but takes in the wide open landscapes and nature of this area. This road trip takes in some of what the famed ‘Grand Circle’ tour visits, but can be done in a shorter time.

  • Make your way to a section of the famous heritage Route 66 between Kingman and Seligman – and enjoy this little slice of the past. After experiencing some classic cars and kitsch along an old section of intact Route 66, head up to the Grand Canyon. Need I say more on why this should be on your itinerary? Book a rim-side cabin, experience sunrise and sunset and the beautiful light, views and hikes.
  • Make your way north to the Arizona – Utah border, to the magical Monument Valley . This place deserves an overnight stay, because the sunrise over these buttes will change your life.
  • Next up, head west over to the Page or Kanab to use as your base for 3-5 days. From here you can explore Horseshoe Bend, Vermillion Cliffs National Monument, Antelope Canyon, Bryce Canyon, and the incredible Zion National Park.
  • Circle back to Las Vegas via some of the fun ghost towns, such as as Grafton .

Vintage cars in Hackberry Route 66

Atlanta and the Smokies

This loop can be done either quickly in a matter of days, or slowly with many beautiful stops. This combines well with the Barbecue Beauty tour and the Highway 61 route – and you can do all three in about 3 weeks.

  • Make your way up to the gorgeous foothills town of Dahlonega to experience how a prosperous gold mining town in the region has fared. Further into the hills you’ll find the alpine town of Helen, Georgia – where they celebrate Bavarian heritage in all its glory.
  • Head up to Asheville for a few days of city fun on the edge of the Blue Ridge Mountains. Check out the marvellous Uncorked Asheville for the lowdown on the city.
  • Backtrack a little and make the scenic drive through the lush Great Smoky Mountains National Park . Base yourself in Gatlinburg for a couple of days and enjoy the natural beauty around you. For those inclined, a trip to Dollywood in Pigeon Forge is tremendous fun!
  • Meander back through Nantahala National Forest and Elijay if you have time.

Smoky Mountains National Park, Hwy 441

Highway 61 is such a diverse route. Running parallel to the Mighty Mississippi, Highway 61 runs from Minnesota to Louisana, but this particular self-drive tour will take you from Memphis to New Orleans one-way.

  • Enjoy a couple of days in Memphis, Tennessee. This blues capital has a great music scene (especially in Overton Square), but also is rich in Civil Rights and river history. Visiting the Lorraine Motel and The National Civil Rights Museum is a truly moving and educational experience. Don’t miss Central BBQ near the Lorraine Motel – the mustard bbq sauce is divine!
  • Your first overnight stop is the incredible town of Clarksdale, Mississippi . The famous Red Bars are a unique night out with unparalleled musical talent.
  • Your next stop is the historical city of Vicksburg. Site of the Siege of Vicksburg, there is lots of Civil War history in the area. If civil war history isn’t your jam, then check out the cute shops, craft breweries, Coca Cola Museum or casino.
  • Stop by Natchez next, to learn about the colourful history of Natchez-Under-The-Hill.
  • End your self drive tour in the spectacular city of New Orleans – where music, delicious food, and lots of folklore await you. Don’t miss a walking tour of one of the NOLA cemeteries !

Vintage trams in Memphis

Dakota Dreaming

If you want to have a great mixed vacation, with fun family activities and natural beauty this route from Deadwood to Denver is for you. You can connect this self drive tour with a Mount Rushmore to Yellowstone itinerary too.

  • Enjoy the fables and fun in Deadwood , where the legendary Wild Bill Hickok and Calamity Jane lived and died. During high season, you can catch a faux gun fight in the main street.
  • Don’t miss a couple of nights in Keystone, to see Mount Rushmore, and to explore Custer State Park and the Needles Highway . The magnificent rock formations and bison-spotting opportunities around this area are second to none.
  • Onwards to Badlands National Park for more natural wonders, before your self-drive tour takes you to another great roadside attraction – Carhenge ! Believe me, it’s worth detouring through Nebraska for!
  • Finish in Denver, Colorado. Try to time your visit to catch a show at the Red Rocks Arena. On non show days, you can visit this impressive space.

Needles Highway needle rock formations

Bears and Buffalos and Coyotes, Oh my!

I don’t know about you, but I love visiting the National Parks of the USA. This self-guided tour from Jackson Hole to Whitefish will take you through the western wilderness – it’s definitely a road trip for nature and adventure lovers!

  • Start in the fun town of Jackson Hole. This place doesn’t take itself too seriously, and really leans into the cowboy tropes. Get yourself a huckleberry gin, watch a gig at one of the saloons, and enjoy the Jackson Hole vibe. It’s an expensive town to stay in, so keep that in mind.
  • Grand Teton National Park sits right next to Yellowstone, so you can explore both while you’re in the area. See my Yellowstone itinerary , highlights and fall guide for how to spend your time here.
  • On your way north, stop in Big Sky on the way. Have a picnic at the beautifully scenic Ousel Fall for your lunch.
  • In Helena, you can learn about the Gold Rush history in the area at the Montana Historical Society Museum.
  • Your last stop is Whitefish and Glacier National Park, where you can extend your road trip to include a drive to Canada on the Going-To-The-Sun Road if you want to experience the foothills of the Rocky Mountains .

Old Faithful geyser at sunset

Atlantic Coast Adventures

  • Starting on the South Carolina coast, enjoy the historic city of Georgetown and the madness of Myrtle Beach . These are two cities not far apart, but vastly different in vibe. Georgetown is small-town quaint, and Myrtle Beach is big-town madness. Don’t miss a night at The Bowery !
  • Head on up the coast to Cape Fear in North Carolina. From Wilmington to Carolina Beach State Park, this relaxed peninsula moves at its own pace. If you were a fan of Dawson’s Creek, this coastline will be familiar to you.
  • Head back south to the classy city of Charleston to finish off this loop. With stunning architecture, parks and lots of history, Charleston has also brings a fantastic barbecue and foodie game!

This road trip combines well with the Barbecue Beauty and the Atlanta & The Smokies trips above.

Cumberland Island Ferry

North East Big Hitters

Who doesn’t want to spend a week (or more) exploring the north east big hitters? And I’m not just talking baseball (although Fenway is a great stadium to visit).

  • Start in Boston and fill your cup with Revolutionary War history and Puritan settler history. The Freedom Trail is a fascinating way to navigate around downtown Boston and learn lots as you go. Don’t miss Boston Common, and a trip to Chinatown.
  • Salem is an easy day trip from Boston , so you don’t need to relocate accommodations for this stop. Although you can if you want a small town, more historic stay. It’s not all witchy wonders and spooky stories, Salem is a great day trip.
  • It’s now on to the Big Apple, New York. Like any big city, New York has its gritty side. But the wonders of this place are endless. Museums like the Met and Moma, the High Line, cycling round Central Park, and iconic vistas greet you like an old friend, whether you’ve been there before or not! I recommend 3-4 days in New York , but you can have a good taster visit in a layover in NYC too.
  • End your self-guided tour in Philadelphia. Philly is more than just Cheese Steak (although that is a big draw)! Home to more Revolutionary War history, the Liberty Bell and location of the signing of the Declaration of Independence; it also has lots of great art museums and nightlife.

Boston at Dusk

Everglades Everyday

A mix of city and nature on this coast to coast Florida tour. You will delight in the wild experiences, the endless activities on offer, and the beautiful swamps and glades. If you are planning a trip to Orlando for Disney, I recommend adding a few days on to do this self-drive tour.

  • Start in Miami. I recommend basing yourself in Miami Beach, where you can get the best of the beach vibes and nightlife. Revel in the Art Deco architecture, and enjoy the cocktail happy hours.
  • Make your way north to Weston, where you can take an airboat tour as an introduction to the Everglades. There are lots of different ways to experience and tour the Everglades , so this is just one of the ways.
  • Head north and to the coast once more, to Merritt Island. You can base yourself in Cocoa Beach – don’t miss seeing the sunrise by the pier. Take a drive out to Cape Canaveral and through the Merritt Island National Wildlife Refuge.
  • If you are combining this trip with a visit to Orlando, this will be your next stop.
  • Now head over to the Gulf Coast of Florida. St Petes is a fantastic city with a strong art scene as well as all the usual beachside activities like fishing and boating.
  • After having your Gulf-side city break, head south to the Everglades and the Big Cypress National Preserve to see the bayou and glades in a different way.

Self drive tours in the USA

Jamie : Good morning. World tours. My name is Jamie. How can I help you?

Andrea Brown : Good morning. I want some information on self-drive tours in the US A. Could you send me a brochure?

Jamie : Of course. Could I have your name, please?

Andrea Brown : Andrea Brown.

Attempt full listening test…

Jamie : Thank you. And your address?

Andrea Brown : 24 Q1 Ardleigh Road.

Jamie : Can you spell that

Andrea Brown : A-R-D-L-E-I-G-H Road postcode BH520P.

Jamie : Thanks. And can I have your phone number?

Andrea Brown : Is a mobile. All right, fine. It’s 07786643091.

Jamie : Thank you. And can I ask you where you heard about world tours from a friend, or did you see an advert somewhere?

Andrea Brown : No. I read about you in the Q2 newspaper.

Jamie : Okay, I’ll get the bridges in the post to you, but can I give you some information over the phone? What kinds of things do you want to do on your holiday?

Andrea Brown : I’m interested in going to California with my family. I’ve got two children and we want to hire a car.

Jamie : Okay, We have a couple of self-drive tours there visiting different places of interest in California. The first one begins in Los Angeles, and there’s plenty of time to visit some of the Q3 theme parks there.

Andrea Brown : That’s something on my children’s list, so I’d want to include that.

Jamie : Good. Then you drive to San Francisco from San Francisco. You can drive to Yosemite Park where you spend a couple of nights. You can choose to stay in a lodge or on the campsite.

Andrea Brown : I don’t like the idea of staying in a Q4 tent. It would be too hot

Jamie : right on the tor-ins in Las Vegas. Okay. The other trip we can arrange is slightly different. It starts in San Francisco, then you drive south to Cambodia.

Andrea Brown : Someone told me there’s a really nice Q5 castle near Cambodia. Will we go now that

Jamie : Hearst Castle is on that road so you could stop there.

Andrea Brown : Good. I’d like to do that. Does this trip also go into the desert?

Jamie : No. It continues to Santa Monica, where most people like to stop and do some shopping.

Andrea Brown : We have enough of that at home, so that doesn’t interest us.

Jamie : Okay, well, you could go straight on to San Diego.

Andrea Brown : That’s good for Q6 beaches, isn’t it?

Jamie : That’s right. That’s a good place to relax. And your children might like to visit the zoo before flying home.

Andrea Brown : Now, I don’t think so. We want some time for sunbathing and swimming So how many days are the trips on DH? How much do they cost?

Jamie : The first one I told you about is a self-drive tour through California, which last twelve days and covers Q7 2020 kilometres. The shortest journey is 206 kilometres on. The longest is 632 kilometres. The cost is 525 pounds per person. That includes accommodation, and car rental on a Q8 flight but no meals.

Andrea Brown : Okay. And the other trip

Jamie : that lasts nine days. But you spend only three days on the road. You cover about nine hundred eighty kilometres altogether.

Andrea Brown : So is that cheaper then?

Jamie : Yes, it’s almost one hundred pounds cheaper. It’s Q9 429 pounds per person, which is a good deal.

Andrea Brown : So that covers accomodation and car hire. What about flights?

Jamie : They aren’t included, but these hotels offer Q10 dinner in the price.

Andrea Brown : Okay. Well, thank you very much. I’ll be in touch when I’ve had a chance to look at the brochure.

Jamie : I’m pleased to help. Goodbye.

Andrea: Good morning. I want some information on self-drive tours in the USA. Could you send me a brochure?

Travel Agent: Of course. Could I have your name, please?

Andrea: Andrea Brown.

Travel Agent: Thank you. And your address?

Đại lý du lịch: Cảm ơn chị. Còn địa chỉ của chị?

Andrea: 24, Ardleigh Road [Q1] .

Andrea: 24, Đường Ardleigh.

Travel Agent: Can you spell that?

Đại lý du lịch: Chị có thể đánh vần tên đường giúp tôi không?

Andrea: A-R-D-L-E-I-G-H Road.

Andrea: Đường A-R-D-L-E-I-G-H.

Travel Agent: Postcode?

Đại lý du lịch: Mã bưu điện của chị là gì?

Andrea: BH5 2OP.

Travel Agent: Thanks. And can I have your phone number?

Andrea: Is a mobile alright?

Travel Agent: Fine.

Đại lý du lịch: Được chị.

Andrea: It’s 07786643091.

Andrea: 07786643091.

Travel Agent: Thank you. And can I ask you where you heard about World Tours? From a friend? Or did you see an advert somewhere?

Đại lý du lịch: Cảm ơn chị. Chị biết đến World Tours thông qua kênh tin tức nào vậy? Từ một người bạn? Hay chị đã thấy một quảng cáo ở đâu đó?

Andrea: No, I read about you in the newspaper [Q2] .

Travel Agent: OK, I’ll get the brochures in the post to you but can I give you some information over the phone. What kinds of things do you want to do on your holiday?

Andrea: I’m interested in going to California with my family. I’ve got two children and we want to hire a car.

Travel Agent: OK. We have a couple of self-drive tours there visiting different places of interest in California. The first one begins in Los Angeles and there’s plenty of time to visit some of the theme parks there [Q3] .

Andrea: That’s something on my children’s list so I’d want to include that.

Travel Agent: Good. Then you drive to San Francisco. From San Francisco, you can drive to Yosemite Park where you spend a couple of nights. You can choose to stay in a lodge or on the campsite.

Andrea: I don’t like the idea of staying in a tent [Q4] . It’d be too hot.

Andrea: Tôi không thích ở lều trại lắm. Trời nóng quá.

Travel Agent: Right. And the tour ends in Las Vegas.

Đại lý du lịch: Vâng. Và tour kết thúc ở Las Vegas.

Andrea: OK.

Travel Agent: The other trip we can arrange is slightly different. It starts in San Francisco. Then you drive south to Cambria.

Andrea: Someone told me there’s a really nice castle near Cambria [Q5] . Will we go near that?

Travel Agent: Hearst Castle is on that road so you could stop there.

Đại lý du lịch: Lâu đài Hearst nằm ngay ven đường, anh chị có thể dừng xe và vào tham quan.

Andrea: Good. I’d like to do that. Does this trip also go into the desert?

Andrea: Tốt quá. Tôi muốn tham quan lâu đài. Có phải tour này đi qua khu vực sa mạc?

Travel Agent: No, it continues to Santa Monica where most people like to stop and do some shopping.

Andrea: We have enough of that at home so that doesn’t interest us.

Travel Agent: OK. Well, you could go straight on to San Diego.

Đại lý du lịch: OK. anh chị có thể đi thẳng đến San Diego.

Andrea: That’s good for beaches , isn’t it [Q6] ?

Travel Agent: That’s right, that’s a good place to relax and your children might like to visit the zoo before flying home.

Andrea: I don’t think so. We want some time for sunbathing and swimming.

Andrea: So how many days are the trips and how much do they cost?

Andrea: Vậy chuyến đi kéo dài bao nhiêu ngày và chi phí bao nhiêu anh nhỉ?

Travel Agent: The first one I told you about is a self-drive tour through California which lasts twelve days and covers 2.020 kilometres [Q7] . The shortest journey is 206 km and the longest is 632 kilometres. The cost is £525 per person. That includes accommodation, car rental and a flight but no meals [Q8] .

Andrea: OK. And the other trip?

Andrea: OK. Thế còn tour kia?

Travel Agent: That lasts nine days but you spend only three days on the road. You cover about 980 kilometres altogether.

Andrea: So is that cheaper then?

Travel Agent: Yes, it’s almost a hundred pounds cheaper. It’s £ 429 per person, which is a good deal [Q9] .

Andrea: So that covers accommodation and car hire. What about flights?

Andrea: Phí đó đã bao gồm chỗ ở và thuê xe. Còn vé bay thì sao?

Travel Agent: They aren’t included. But these hotels offer dinner in the price [Q10] .

Andrea: OK. Well, thank you very much. I’ll be in touch when I’ve had a chance to look at the brochure.

Andrea: OK.

Travel Agent: I’m pleased to help. Goodbye.

Đại lý du lịch: Tôi rất vui lòng được giúp đỡ chị. Chào chị.

Andrea: Goodbye.

Andrea: Chào anh.

John: Erm… hello Professor, I’m John Wishart. I’m working on my entry for the Global Design Competition. My tutor said you might be able to help me with it.

Professor: Ah, yes, I got a copy of your drawings. Come in and tell me about it. What sort of competition is it?

Giáo sư: Ah, ừ, tôi có bản sao bản vẽ của em rồi. Lại đây và kể tôi nghe. Cuộc thi đó là như thế nào?

John: Well, it’s an international design competition and we have to come up with a new design for a typical domestic kitchen appliance.

Professor: I see and are there any special conditions? Does it have to save energy for example?

Giáo sư: À ra là vậy. Có điều kiện gì đặc biệt không? Ví dụ như thiết kế phải tiết kiệm năng lượng chẳng hạn?

John: Actually that was the focus in last year’s competition. This year’s different. We have to adopt an innovative approach to existing technology, using it in a way that hasn’t been thought of before [Q21] .

Professor: I see. That sounds tricky. And what kitchen appliance have you chosen?

John: Well, I decided to choose the dishwasher.

John: Em chọn máy rửa chén ạ.

Professor: Interesting! What made you choose that?

Giáo sư: Thú vị! Điều gì khiến em chọn máy rửa chén vậy?

John: Well, they’re an everyday kitchen appliance in most Australian houses but they’re all pretty boring and almost identical to each other. I think some people will be prepared to pay a little extra for something that looks different [Q22] .

Professor: That’s a nice idea. I see you’ve called your design the ‘Rockpool’; why is that?

John: Basically, because it looks like the rock pools you find on a beach. The top is made of glass so that you can look down into it.

Professor: And there’s a stone at the bottom. Is that just for decoration?

Giáo sư: Và có một hòn đá ở phía dưới. Chắc chỉ để trang trí hả?

John: Actually it does have a function. Instead of pushing a button, you turn the stone .

Professor: So it’s really just a novel way of starting the dishwasher [Q23] .

John: That’s right.

John: Đúng vậy ạ.

Professor: It’s a really nice design, but what makes it innovative ?

John: Well, I decided to make a dishwasher that uses carbon dioxide.

John: Em quyết định làm một chiếc máy rửa chén sử dụng carbon dioxide.

Professor: In place of water and detergent? How will you manage that?

Giáo sư: Thay vì nước và chất tẩy rửa? Làm thế nào được nhỉ?

John: The idea is to pressurise the carbon dioxide so that it becomes a liquid.

That’s where the liquid is depressurised and so it reverts to a gas [Q24] . Then the oil and grease are separated out and sent to the waste system.

Professor: It sounds like you’ve thought it all out very thoroughly. So, what happens to the carbon dioxide once the process is complete? Not wasted I hope.

John: Actually, that’s where the real savings are made. The carbon dioxide is sent back to the cylinder and can be used again and again [Q25] .

Professor: What a terrific idea. Do you think it will ever be built?

John: Probably not, but that’s OK.

Professor: Well, I’m sure a lot of positive things will come out of your design.

Professor: Now, you seem to have thought about everything so what exactly did you need me to help you with?

Giáo sư: Có vẻ như em đã tính toán mọi thứ rồi, vậy chính xác thì em cần gì ở tôi?

John: Well, my design has made it to the final stage of the competition and, in a few months’ time, I have to give a presentation , and that’s the part I was hoping you could help me with [Q26] .

Professor: Right, well that should be easy enough. What have you managed to do so far?

Giáo sư: Được rồi, dễ thôi. Em đã làm đến đâu rồi?

John: Well, I’ve got detailed drawings to show how it will work and I’ve also written a 500-word paper on it.

Professor: I see. Well, if you want to stand a good chance of winning you really need a model of the machine [Q27] .

Giáo sư: Ừm tôi biết rồi. Nếu em muốn có cơ hội giành chiến thắng, em thực sự cần một mô hình máy.

John: Yes, I thought I might but I’m having a few problems.

Professor: What is the main difficulty so far? Let me guess – is it the materials ?

Giáo sư: Vấn đề gì? Để tôi đoán xem – về vật liệu hả?

John: Yes. I want it to look professional but everything that’s top quality is also very expensive [Q28] .

John: Vâng. em muốn mô hình phải chuyên nghiệp nhưng vật liệu chất lượng cao thì rất đắt.

Professor: Look, projects like this are very important to us. They really help lift our profile. So why don’t you talk to the university about a grant [Q29] ? I can help you fill out the application forms if you like.

John: That would be great.

John: Vâng tuyệt quá thầy ạ.

Professor: You’d better show me this paper you’ve written as well. For a global competition such as this, you need to make sure the technical details you’ve given are accurate and thorough [Q30] .

John: That would be a great help.

John: Vâng ạ.

Professor: Is there anything else I can do?

Giáo sư: Tôi còn có thể làm gì nữa để giúp em không?

John: Well, I’m really …

John: Vâng, em thực sự rất …
