Japan Self-Guided Tours

Here is an overview of the best self-guided tours in Japan.

Self Guided Tours in Japan

Why Choose a Self-Guided Tour?

There are many reasons why you might want to choose a traveling tour.

They can be a great middle ground between the standard tour format and a fully self-planned trip, it can be less stressful and there are so many different tours available that you’ll always be able to find something to suit you.

One of the main advantages of a self-guided tour is convenience.

Planning, researching, and scheduling international travel can be a time-consuming and stressful process.

With a self-guided tour, most of these issues are taken care of, freeing up your time and energy to go towards excitement for the travel rather than stress.

Price is another big benefit of self-guided tours.

A self-guided tour is of course cheaper than a standard tour with a guide but allows you to still take advantage of industry deals that a tour company can get.

This can lead to reduced prices for accommodation, day trips, and entrance fees.

Perfect for A Family or Small Group

Self-guided tours are also ideal for introverts or those traveling with their own family or small group.

Standard tours are usually a set size and so some social interaction with strangers is required.

While this can be a great way to make friends and meet new people, for some this can be tiring and an added burden on the travel.

With a self-guided tour, this aspect of a tour is removed and travelers are free to enjoy their trip on their own terms.

Following this, there is also more flexibility when it comes to scheduling.

If you need to take a break, it is easy to skip part of the planned schedule without affecting anyone else.

If there is somewhere you’d like to spend longer and explore further, the schedule can be easily adjusted.

Finally, the security of a self-guided tour can’t be ignored.

Taking a tour means there is always someone else in charge who can take over and help with any issues that come up. This is still true of self-guided tours with a contact person available.

If you should run into trouble while traveling, there is no need to panic or start stressing about how to solve the issue, as the tour company will be able to help find a solution.

These are just some of the reasons why a self-guided tour can be a great option when planning travel. When considering all the elements of your trip, it is easy to see how and why self-guided tours come up as an ideal option for many travelers.

What Are the Best Companies for Self-Guided Tours in Japan?

Japan has become extremely popular for travel over the last 5 -10 years, meaning almost all tour companies have a presence in the country.

This can make it difficult to choose a company to use for your self-guided tour.

Is it best to go with a large, well-known multinational company that has a good reputation, or a local, lesser-known, more niche company that may have more localized and specialized knowledge about the area?

It is impossible to give an over-arching answer, however, some of our top picks for finding the best self-guided tour for you include TourRadar and Japan Experience.

The tour starts in Tokyo with being met at the airport and traveling via shuttle bus to your accommodation.

After a long international flight, this can be a great relief as you are able to avoid the potential difficulties of public transport and carrying luggage through the city.

After a day in Tokyo, the tour then moves to Hakone, a small onsen area outside of Tokyo.

This area is popular as a weekend trip for Tokyo residents and is well-known for its beautiful onsens, stunning views and scenery (including Mt. Fuji), and relaxing atmosphere.

The next morning, the tour will utilize the fast and comfortable shinkansen (bullet train) to travel to the cultural capital of Kyoto.

Unmissable Gardens in Japan (14 Days)

Japan is famous for its beautiful gardens and landscape design. Many of the gardens are designed around Zen philosophy and involve a number of specific elements.

There are countless blogs, guidebooks, and magazines which document the top gardens of Japan, which can make it difficult for an international traveler to narrow down which ones to visit.

This gardens in Japan tour makes the planning stage easier by selecting some of the top gardens to visit and experience.

The tour starts in Tokyo with standard airport pocket Wi-Fi and travel documents handover.

The first day in Tokyo also continues with standard recommendations of Meiji Shrine, Shibuya Scramble Crossing, and similar locations.

The next day has a number of options, including exploring some of Tokyo’s top Edo Period gardens. These are steps back in time to a historical period in time in Tokyo’s history.

Another option is to take a trip outside of Tokyo to Kairakuen garden in Mito. This is one of Japan’s top 3 most famous gardens.

The other two gardens in this category are included later in the tour.

From Tokyo, the tour then heads to Kanazawa, sometimes known as ‘Little Kyoto’ due to its similarity in traditional buildings and districts.

However, Kanazawa is also known as the location for the second of Japan’s top 3 gardens – Kenrokuen.

Kenrokuen is known to be beautiful year-round with seasonal displays surrounding the beautiful pond, strolling paths, and statues.

Matsue is also home to Yushien Garden, which has 100s of peony varieties and a regular Peony Pond display.

Finally, the tour ends with 4 days in Kyoto.

Itinerary idea in detail

Ask us if you would also like us to arrange your international flights at our preferred rates.

Once you arrive in Tokyo, transfer directly to your flight to Fukuoka. Once in Fukuoka, a representative will meet you at the airport to guide you through arrivals. They will then show you to the waiting transfer to your hotel. Spend the rest of the day relaxing after your long flight. One recommendation would be to stay local and enjoy 'yatai' or street food in and around Canal City in Hakata.

Fukuoka, Japan

Spend the morning exploring the vibrant city of Fukuoka. The canals running through the city give a unique flavor. In the evening head out for a street food tour for a true introduction to Kyushu cuisine.

Fresh seafood in Fukuoka

Pick up your hire car today and drive to the onsen village of Kurokawa and spend the rest of the day at leisure relaxing in the sumptuous hot springs.

Kurokawa river and bridge

There are some nice walks to be done or make use of your hire car to explore more of the area. You can also take advantage of a day pass to visit other hot springs in the village.

Onsen spa tags, Kurokawa

Travel south to the sheer limestone cliffs of Takachiho Gorge. Once freshened up, perhaps hire a rowing boat and drift gently along the river through waterfalls and cliff faces.

Takachiho Gorge, Kyushu

Make the drive down south to the small coastal town of Ibusuki famous for the hot sand bathing on offer in the area.

Sunset in Ibusuki

From Ibusuki head up to the larger city of Kagoshima, not before stopping off in the small town of Chiran to see the Kamikaze museum and samurai residences.

Mt. Sakurajima, Kagoshima

Spend a day in the city of Kagoshima. The most prominent feature of Kagoshima is its location in the shadow of the enormous Sakurajima volcano. The active volcano often spews ash over the city and leaves the residents with the almost daily task of sweeping ash from their driveways.

Kagoshima ramen

Take a short drive to the Kirishima National Park, a fantastic destination for hikers of all levels.

Kirishima National Park, Japan

At leisure, visit Kirishima National Park to enjoy some of the many walking trails and soak up the beautifully verdant green of this part of Kyushu.

Kirishima National Park

Return to Kagoshima, drop off your hire car and board the train to Kumamoto and spend the rest of the day at leisure. Our recommendation for the afternoon is to visit Kumamoto Castle and its nearby Suizenji gardens.

View from Kumamoto Castle

A short drive to the port to board the car ferry over to Unzen Peninsula from where you climb the mountain via the sulfuric bubbling pools at the top of Mount Unzen. After, head back down the mountain over to Nagasaki Bay and the city itself.

Shrine grounds, Nagasaki

At leisure in Nagasaki. It's worth visiting the small yet quite harrowing peace museum, but more of what Nagasaki has to offer is in town, such as Glover Garden, on which 'Madame Butterfly' was based, and Dejima Wharf at sunset.

Nagasaki bay

At leisure, explore 'Gunkanjima' or 'Battleship Island', infamous for its eerily vacant and uninhabited atmosphere often used in movies.

Dejima manmade island

Continue by train to Hakata, a lovely journey along the coast and through paddy fields. Once in Fukuoka, enjoy the remainder of your evening in this compact but buzzy modern city.

Fukuoka chicken hotpot 'mizutaki'

Take the easy subway line to the airport and board your flight back to Tokyo for a final night in the capital.

Asakusa shrine, Tokyo

Take the airport shuttle bus to the airport and board your return flight.

Ginza nightlife, Tokyo

Suggested itinerary

You'll depart from Europe to Osaka on an overnight flight so try to get some sleep and be prepared for the adventure waiting ahead!

You'll arrive at Osaka Kansai International airport after clearing immigration and customs, then continue to your hotel in nearby Kyoto.

Once the capital of Japan from 794 to 1868, Kyoto is a city filled with traditional Japanese cultural delights and is a UNESCO-protected area due to its historical architecture. The city has over 1600 temples and 400 Shinto shrines, making Kyoto perfect for those looking to explore the more traditional sides of Japanese culture.

Kick off your first day in Kyoto with a visit to the impressive Nijo Castle, which was built in 1603 as the Kyoto residence of Tokugawa Ieyasu, the first shogun (military ruler) of the Edo Period (1603-1867).

Today let's take the opportunity to explore the more mountainous areas of Arashiyama and Sagano located northwest of the city. Start by taking the local train from Kyoto station on a 20-25 minute ride to Arashiyama station.

From there, you'll walk over the Togetsukyo bridge that crosses the Katsura river for an impressive view of the hills of Arashiyama. Depending on what season you are visiting, the hills are lined with blossoming cherry trees in the Springtime, while the Autumn season produces a stunning sea of red and yellow falling leaves.

You will then proceed to the atmospheric Sagano Bamboo Forest. Take your time strolling through the forest, admiring the views of central Kyoto. Before you leave, pay a visit to Tenryuji Temple with its century-old landscape gardens and Daikaku-ji temple, which boasts a 1200-year-old Osawa Pond.

If you have some extra time, head to the Takao region a little further to the north. There are even more breathtaking mountain landscapes to be discovered here. If you're travelling in spring and autumn, take the Kiyotaki river walk trail, which has a delightful array of seasonal colours.

Begin your second day in Kyoto with a visit to the eastern part of Kyoto known as Higashiyama (eastern hills).

Take a bus to the famous Ginkaku-ji (Silver Pavilion), home to one of Japan's most fascinating landscape gardens. Ginkaku-ji is also the starting point of the Philosopher's Path, a trail along a small stream lined with Japanese cherry trees leading you to Nanzen-ji temple.

Continuing further south, you'll reach Kiyomizu-dera, Kyoto's most iconic temple, with incredible panoramic views of Kyoto city. The streets leading up to the temple – Ninzenzaka and Sannenzaka hills - have numerous local shops where you can pick up souvenirs and sample delicious traditional snacks.

After, head south to Fushimi-Inari Shrine, instantly recognizable due to its countless number of red torii-gates, which all line up to create a fascinating view of seemingly never-ending long red tunnels. The Fushimi-Inari Shrine is a famous Kyoto landmark and a rewarding place to visit if you would like to get to the essence of true traditional Kyoto culture.

Kyoto – day trip Mt. Hiei / Enryakuji temple complex

Today, you'll embark on a historic journey through Japan's ancient traditions and religions. Begin by travelling to the foot of Mt. Hiei, which is located on the border of Kyoto Prefecture and Shiga Prefecture, and from its summit, you can enjoy breathtaking views of Lake Biwa. You'll catch a cable car up the mountain and spend the day exploring the Enryaku-ji temple complex and its surroundings.

Enryaku-ji was founded around the late 700s. Many influential monks studied at Enryakuji, including the founders of later sects, such as the Pure Land (Jodo), Zen and Nichiren sects. You can easily spend the whole day wandering around, observing the monks perform Buddhist rituals and immerse yourself in the historical and religious atmosphere. Back in Kyoto, you'll round up the day by visiting the Heian Shrine, the largest and most well-known Shinto Shrine in central Kyoto.

Kyoto - Amanohashidate - Ine - Kinosaki Onsen

Today you will embark on your self-drive journey! You'll pick up the car and drive north towards the coastline to Amanohashidate Sandbar, located an hour and a half out of Kyoto. Located in Miyazu Bay, this beautiful, three kilometre-long stretch of land covered with lush growth is a sight not to be missed.

The name Amanohashidate roughly translates to "bridge in heaven," and it is said that when viewed from the mountains at either end of the bay, the sandbar resembles a pathway connecting heaven and earth.

After your visit to Amanohashidate, we recommend a quick visit to Ine, a small fishing town in Ine Bay located a 23-kilometre drive away. The town is famous for its boathouses known as 'funaya,' located right on the shore. The best way to see the houses is to take a sightseeing boat and look at them from the water.

Today you will be spending the night in the spa town of Kinosaki Onsen, which is located an hour and a half from Ine on the north coast of the Sea of Japan. This delightful hot-spring town has many authentic shops, cafes, restaurants and bathhouses. You will be staying the night in a ryokan (Japanese inn) for an authentic Japanese experience; we recommend arriving early to enjoy a long bath before dinner.

Kinosaki Onsen - Uradome – Tottori

After a delicious ryokan breakfast, it's off to the Uradome coast in Tottori prefecture, an hour from Kinosaki Onsen.

Uradome is a dramatic coastal landscape with cliffs, tunnels, and caves that run along a three-kilometre walking path by the coast. In warmer weather, water activities such as snorkelling or kayaking are a hit for those who can't wait to dip their feet in the crystal clear water.

Next, drive on to the Tottori dunes, Japan's largest sand dunes that span roughly 16 kilometres of coast along the Sea of Japan and are up to a staggering two kilometres wide and 50 metres high. For an excellent afternoon activity, located a short walk away from the dunes stands The Sand Museum, home to large sand sculptures by artists from around the world. You'll spend the night in Tottori town, only a short drive from the dunes.

Tottori - Mt. Daisen - Matsue

Continuing your coastal tour today, you will be driving towards the cultural city of Matsue.

We highly recommend taking a detour on your way to Matsue to see the beautiful area around Mt. Daisen and the Daisen-daki waterfall, which are located an hour and a half from Tottori. Nestled deep in nature, it takes an approximately 45-minute walk from the car park to reach the 43-metre waterfall. Enjoy the hiking trail that winds through the dense forest, crossing a small suspension bridge that spans a spectacular mountain gorge.

While on your nature adventure, you can also stop at Kagikake-toge Pass, which offers a stunning view of Mount Daisen. After exploring Tottori's natural surroundings, you will drive an hour to your hotel, where you will stay the next two days and nights.

If you have time for more venturing, consider paying a visit to Lafcadio Hearn's former residence and museum. The museum is dedicated to Lafcadio Hearn, an Englishman who came to Japan as an English teacher in 1890. Hearn married a Japanese woman from an important Samurai family and eventually stayed in Japan his whole life, later becoming one of the earliest and most prolific writers to reveal Japan to the western world in his writings. He was one of the first westerners to adopt Japanese citizenship and was naturalised as Koizumi Yakumo, the name by which he's known in Japan today.

Today you will spend the entire day in the quaint town of Matsue, the capital of Shimane prefecture. Make your way to the exciting Adachi Museum of Art, southeast of Matsue. This must-see museum is famous for its spectacular Japanese garden, which can only be viewed from the museum building.

Spend the afternoon exploring Matsue's city centre, known for its most prized attraction, the impressive, black Matsue castle, one of Japan's oldest castles. While in the area, the samurai district is also worth a visit. Here you can see several well-preserved homes from the samurai era, including Matsue Buke Yashiki, which is open to the public.

Matsue - Izumo Taisha Grand Shrine - Iwami Silver Mines – Yunotsu Onsen

Start the day by visiting Izumo Taisha, one of Japan's most ancient and important Shinto shrines located in Shimane prefecture. The route is particularly picturesque, along the idyllic Shinji Lake, only an hour drive away. According to legend, all eight million Gods of the Shinto religion meet at this shrine every October.

After, continue to the Iwami Ginzan silver mine approximately another hour (49 km) drive away. This historic silver mine is a UNESCO cultural treasure that was active for nearly 400 years, from its discovery in 1526 to its closure in 1923. Around the vicinity of the mine, you can explore shafts, ruins and various temples and shrines dedicated to the mine. Tonight you will spend the night in a ryokan in Yunotsu Onsen, a small seaside town known for the remedial, mineral-rich waters of its historic public bathhouses (30 minutes from Ginzan).

Yunotsu Onsen - Tsuwano

After breakfast, you'll drive to the small town of Tsuwano, a remote castle town deep in the mountains of Shimane Prefecture. Tsuwano is one of the best-preserved medieval cities in all of Japan. Here you can find your way among ancient samurai houses, shrines, temples and art museums.

The city is known for its traditional handicrafts. While you're there, we suggest trying out the art of making traditional washi paper. Also worth a visit is the Taikodani Inari Shrine and the Tsuwano Castle Ruins, which stand atop a mountain ridge, 200 metres above the town centre. The ruins can be reached with a chairlift and a 15-20 minute walk.

After a long day of exploring, make your way back to your ryokan for a good night's rest before your busy day tomorrow!

Tsuwano - Hagi

From Tsuwano, you will continue your journey by car into the most southern prefecture of the Honshu main island, Yamaguchi. On your scenic hour-long drive through Yamaguchi, you will reach Hagi, a well-preserved ancient samurai town located right on the shores of the Sea of Japan.

Historical treasures are hidden around every corner of this small town; however, the highlight is the old castle town. Walk down the ancient alleyways and see the well-preserved wooden houses where the samurai once lived.

Hagi and Akiyoshidai National Park

Today is dedicated to the breathtaking Akiyoshidai National Park.

Akiyoshidai Plateau, located about 35 minutes by car from Hagi, is home to Japan's largest concentration of limestone formations. It is believed that the plateau was a coral reef about 300 million years ago and that today's limestone formations are due to the gradual dissolution caused by the rain. Here you can also find many hiking trails to enjoy!

While exploring Akiyoshidai National Park, we suggest a visit to Akiyoshido Cave, a giant 9km deep limestone cave. A small portion of the cave is open to the public, with plenty of light and space to have an adventurous trek. Once inside the cave, check out the impressive limestone formations, underground waterfalls and a cobalt blue stream that runs along the footpath.

Hagi - Fukuoka

Today, you will be driving a little over two hours to the last stop of your trip, Fukuoka.

Fukuoka is well known for its vibrant nightlife, contemporary attractions, shopping, and cuisine; This beloved city is ideal for concluding your adventures in Japan. Fukuoka is also famous for its delicious ramen (noodle soup). Before you leave, try a bowl of tonkotsu ramen with its flavourful pork-based broth.

Afterwards, take a night stroll through the sparkling entertainment district of Tenjin and check out the plentiful local izakaya (Japanese bar) restaurants on your last night.

Return to Europe

Today you will be saying goodbye to a memorable trip exploring the wonders of the Sanin Kaigan Coast. Catch the metro or a taxi to the Fukuoka Itazuke International airport, where you will depart back home to Europe.

Spectacular Nature – Tohoku Self Drive

10 nights | 11 days.

The Tohoku region of Japan is home to unspoiled rural landscapes and historical treasures, outdoor summer adventures and endless powder snow in the winter

Japan’s northeastern wilderness is a huge region encompassing six rural prefectures, bound together by custom and heritage.

Dramatic landscapes, history-rich sites, craft sake and a host of outdoor activities like rafting, hiking and skiing.

Much more rural than Tokyo yet more developed than Hokkaido, the Tohoku region makes for exciting excursions from the capital and memorable side trips on the journey to the northernmost region of Japan’s main island.

Day 1: Transfer to Fukushima & Drive to Aizu Wakamatsu

Start driving from Fukushima Prefecture. Take a bullet train from Tokyo to Fukushima and hire a car near the station. Today’s destination, Aizu Wakamatsu City is one of the most popular historical regions in Tohoku. We’ll go on sightseeing in this area tomorrow.

Accommodation in Aizu Wakamatsu

Day 2: Aizu Wakamatsu and Ouchijuku

Morning travels around the town of Samurai. Aizu Wakamatsu Castle (Tsurugajo Castle) is known for its beautiful appearance and its long history of over 600 years. In spring, many people visit this castle, which is admired as one of the top cherry blossom viewing spots.

Near Aizu Wakamatsu, there is a beautiful lake and a mountain called Lake Inawashiro and Mt. Bandai. Inawashiro is known as a lake where swans visit from Siberia to pass the winter.

In the afternoon, we’ll drive south to Ouchijuku, a post town in Edo period. Historical townscape still remains with the thatch-roofed houses built in that era used as restaurants or craft shops. Step back 400 years ago.

Day 3: Matsushima & Sendai

Morning travels to Miyagi prefecture and Matsushima. Matsushima, the stunning bay area with a unique landscape would be perfect for a driving trip. 260 islands and wave-cut rocks will show you dynamic scenery. The view of Matsushima is known as one of the three greatest views in Japan. The top master of haiku poetry in Edo period, Basho Matsuo, made a trip to Tohoku seeking to visit Matsushima. However, he didn’t make any haiku describing the scenery of Matsushima. It is said that’s because Matsushima was so spectacular that he didn’t even have words to express the beauty, while he had made tons of haiku poems about Japan’s sceneries.

Afterwards we’ll go around Sendai, the base of the Sendai government in Edo period. Sendai Castle was built by Masamune Date (a.k.a. the one-eyed dragon), one of the most admired samurai among history fans. There’s also a mausoleum of him in Sendai.

Accommodation in Sendai

Day 4: Hiraizumi & Morioka

Approximately one hour drive will take you to another historical town having a Buddhist aspect. Amongst the attractions in Hiraizumi, must-see would be Chusoji and Motsuji. You may have seen a golden pavilion in Japan on other websites or social media, that fabulous treasure hall is in Chusonji Temple. That golden pavilion was built almost 900 years ago and has remained as it was until now. Another must-visit temple is Motsuji, a temple with a beautiful traditional garden and architecture. People appreciate the Japanese-style garden which remains the appearance from the year 850, Heian era.

After visiting the two admirable temples, we’ll drive to Morioka. This city will make you experience Japanese in another different aspect. They take place several traditional festivals in a year to carry on local cultures. Also, handy crafts in this city are popular among tourists from both Japan and other countries.

Accommodation in Morioka

Day 5: Lake Towada & Oirase Gorge

Today’s route is only for self-drive tours as there’s no effective public transportation there. Lake Towada & Oirase Gorge area is known as an autumn leaves site. Beautiful nature and the clear air and water attract people seeking a refreshing experience. For drivers, Towada and Oirase have good access, roads are not straight but at least wide enough to drive safely.

Afternoon travels to Aomori City, the far north part of the main island of Japan. Aomori also has plenty of attractions to experience. One aspect among many is a huge producer of tuna. In Japan, tuna is the king of sashimi and sushi, and thanks to the landscape and the current, tuna in Aomori is said to be the largest and most delicious in Japan.

Accommodation in Aomori

Day 6: Aomori & Hirosaki

Visit Sannai Maruyama Historical Site in Aomori this morning, where you can experience the oldest Japanese history of Jomon era. This Jomon village was discovered in 1994 and registered as a World Heritage site in 2021. You can experience the life of Japanese people over 2000 years ago.

In the afternoon, we’ll drive about 1 hour to Hirosaki. Hirosaki is known by Japanese people as a castle town in Edo period. Hirosaki Castel in Hirosaki Park is the most popular destination. In spring, they take the cherry blossom festival, and it is admired as one of the three most beautiful cherry blossom views in Japan. Also, summer warms up the city with the Neputa Festival making a wish for the good harvest of the year.

Day 7: Shirakami-Sanchi & Oga Peninsula

The destination of this morning is Aoike (Blue Pond) in Shirakami-Sanchi, the World Heritage mountains between Akita and Aomori. Of course you’ll enjoy driving itself through the dynamic mountains of Shirakami, but the Aoike Pond and the surrounding nature are breathtaking. People say it’s like someone poured blue ink into the pond. Thanks to the sunshine, around noon is the best time to visit there.

Afternoon will drive for Oga peninsula. Oga is known for Namahage demons. During a winter festival, the demons visit each family to threaten children into listening to their parents. That peninsula with the unique culture has a beautiful and interesting sunset viewing site, Godzilla Rock. There is a wave-cut rock that looks like Godzilla on Shiosesaki Viewpoint. When the sun comes down, it looks as if the Godzilla were shooting a fire.

Accommodation in Oga or Akita City

Day 8: Kakunodate & Lake Tazawa

One day trip to Kakunodate, samurai village, 1 hour away from Akita City. People visit Kakunodate, one of not a lot of old samurai districts that remains today, to see cherry blossoms in spring or autumn leaves. There remain houses of different families with each feature and story. You can go around this village with a local English-speaking guide or a guiding rickshaw.

Afternoon will visit Lake Tazawa, the deepest lake in Japan. The contrast between the deep blue of the lake and the green of the surrounding mountains is the highlight of this lake. There is a tale about a girl who lived near Lake Tazawa and the statue of the girl on the lakeside is a great photo spot.

Accommodation in Akita

Day 9: Ginzan Onsen

Two hours driving Akita to Ginzan Onsen. Today, experience Japanese onsen culture. Ginzan Onsen town is the No.1 onsen resort in Tohoku with a traditional onsen townscape. In winter, many people visit to see the nostalgic town with beautiful snow, but of course you can also enjoy the onsen culture in other seasons. Ginzan is translated to a silver mine in English, and this onsen town is named after a silver mine that prospered in Edo period (500 years ago). After the mine was closed, a lot of people left this town but the onsen has remained for generations and now Ginzan onsen town is loved by onsen fans or tourists from different places.

Accommodation in Ginzan Onsen

Day 10: Mt. Zao & Zao Onsen

Less than a 2-hour drive to Yamagata. Mt. Zao is one of the most popular mountains in Tohoku because of the beautiful crater lake at the summit. You can trek from a lower station if you are a climber, but also roads are well paved for driving tourists. The emerald green lake changes its colour beautifully according to the angle of the sunlight.

The base area of Mt. Zao is loved by people as an onsen town. This old onsen discovered approximately 1,900 years ago is a high-sulfur hot spring and is called the “hot spring for beautiful and smooth skin”. Spend the last night of this tour soaking in the bath and healing your body from the fatigue you gained during this long trip.

Day 11: Drive back to Fukushima and transfer to Tokyo

1 hour drive to Fukushima and return the car. And then take a bullet train to Tokyo

Japan 8 days self drive in central region – summary itinerary.

Japan 8 days self drive in Central Region – Summary Itinerary

Japan Central Region / Chubu Road Map

Why do the self drive with rental car in japan.

  • Freedom to explore anywhere and anytime.
  • Do any impromptu stop and visit the places local go and shop.
  • Driving is not difficult in Japan at all if you can manage Malaysia and Singapore road trip as most Japanese drivers and pedestrians are well-behaved and follow the rules like the ‘sheep’.
  • Enjoy more privacy – Having family bonding time with 3 generations together in the car, if you have grandparents and young children on the road trip. You don’t have to worry grandparents and young children can’t cope with the fast pace of the big group tour as this is your own private tour with car rental.
  • Enjoy more comfort – No need to carry your big luggage up and down stairs in the train station if you drive a rental car.
  • Enjoy more option where to stay – You can choose to stay in the hotel that is far away from the city with cheaper price but offer better values, eg with mountain view and luxury onsen/hot springs facilities & big space in the room (you don’t even realize you are actually in Japan as Japan city hotel is usually very small). You don’t have to choose to stay near the train station as the hotel in the train station is usually very narrow and small.
  • Cost saving with pax of 2 and above.  Of course, if you have a pax of 5, you will enjoy the most value from renting a car.
  • Japan is one of the best destinations to do self-drive in Asia.

Central Japan also Known as Chubu Japan

We like to self-drive within Japan outskirt cities, driving within major big cities is not recommended due to the heavy traffic and extremely narrow roads.  Most signs are posted in “Romaji”- in English which is readable for the foreigner. If you read Kanji/Chinese Character, you have the advantage of reading both in the signboard.  I strongly recommend getting in a car and driving around the outskirt of Japan, this is the way to see the beautiful “inaka”/countryside of Japan.  It is also more economical than buying expensive “shinkansen”/bullet train tickets or normal train tickets if you have pax of 4.  Furthermore, taxi cost a bomb in Japan.

Central Japan/日本中部/Chubu Japan are :

1. Aichi Prefecture-Nagoya 2.Gifu Prefecture-Takayama, Shirakawa-go 3.Toyama Prefecture-Tateyama & Kurobe Alpine & Tonami 4.Nagano Prefecture-Matsumoto 5.Yamanashi Prefecture-Mt Fuji 6.Kanagawa Prefecture (not in Central Japan) -Hakone

How to book a car?

Our rental car with 1500-1800cc cost about SGD$  100 per day including insurance protection.  Please use Rentalcars.com  to choose your favorite car.

If you book car rental online, it is important for you to  print out a hard copy of the insurance protection  you have paid for. That way, the staff in the car rental will not ask you to purchase again. Some car rental insists you purchase car insurance even you have told them you have already purchased online because they don’t believe you have already done as they can’t see it from their system. (We experience that in Japan & UK). Rentalcars.com is an online agent not the car rental company, just like Agoda is an online agent for hotels booking. Remember to print out the copy to show them as proof. Or you can opt out for car protection insurance when you book online but make sure you purchase with the staff when you pick up the car . Either way is ok. The key is to have car protection insurance and also don’t need to purchase twice.

Day 1 – Itinerary Nagoya in Aichi Prefecture

  • Arrived at Nagoya Airport – 8 am
  • Togokusan Fruits Park/東谷山フルーツパーク
  • Hotel Route Inn Nakatsugawa /中津川 in Gifu/岐阜

On the first day when we arrived in Nagoya Airport, we picked up the rental car then drove straight to Togokusan Fruit Park, away from the city area to avoid traffic.  We didn’t even drive into Nagoya city as you know city area is always full of traffic.

Togokusan Fruit Park is a nice fruit farm which has 15 orchards and 15 types of fruits. Depend on which season you choose and there are always different kind of fruits waiting for you there.  Do join the fruit picking activities offered in the park.

Magome/馬籠  is a small post town which served travelers connecting the major route from Tokyo and Kyoto in the Edo period, 300-400 years ago.  The town or I should say the village is built uphill and very pleasant to walk up to check on the photogenic view.  There are plenty of eateries and souvenirs where you could enjoy along the way.

Day 2 – Itinerary – Takayama in Gifu Prefecture

  • Yatai Kaikan Takayama
  • Takayama city
  • Route Inn Grantia Hidatakayama

Takayama/高山 as the name suggest is a city in the mountain area in Gifu Prefecture. There are a few things you could do in this town, one is the old town and the other you may want to explore is the Takayama Yatai Kaikan which is used for festivals. In the Takayama Yatai Kaikan, you learn a lot of different floats used in the Japanese ‘Matsuri’/festivals. Takayama is best known for their festival in the whole of Japan.

Day 3 – Itinerary – Takayama & Shirakawa Go in Gifu Prefecture

  • Takayama city – Nakabashi Bridge
  • Shirakawa-go, Ogimachi Village (UNESCO world heritage site)
  • Tonami Royal Hotel in Toyama

Before we left Takayama city, we went to check out the Nakabashi Bridge, the well-known RED bridge also symbol of Takayama. Strongly recommended to pay a little visit and take some photos with the RED bridge as it is very picturesque, especially during cherry blossom season.

Shirakawa Go/ 白川郷 is one of the highlights in Central Japan once this village has obtained the Unesco World Heritage. The view is stunning especially in the winter as the whole village is cover in snow.  I don’t like winter so choose a warmer season to go.  It is really up to you.

Day 4 – Itinerary – Tateyama in Toyama Prefecture

  • Tateyama Kurobe Alpine Route
  • Hotel Morinokaze Tateyama

Kurobe Alpine Route is the unique and interesting route which you will experience different means of transportation. You need a whole day to do Kurobe Alpine route and you will be in the cable cars, trolley buses and ropeway. No doubt, stunning view along the way. The best time to see snow walls is by early spring mid-April to May.  I was here in November so there are no snow walls (too bad) and a certain period is closed and visitors are not able to go up.  Do check out the availability.

DAY 5 – Itinerary – Matsumoto City in Nagano Prefecture

  • Matsumoto Art museum in Matsumoto City
  • Shopping in Matsumoto City
  • Hotel Montagne Matsumoto

When you are in Matsumoto city, the one thing you need to check out is the Matsumoto Castle .  And if you know Yayoi Kusama, the polka dots artists then you may want to visit some of her work in the Art Museum in Matsumoto city.  Matsumoto city is Yayoi Kusama’s hometown.  It was a raining day so I went to the Art  Museum and glad it did not disappoint me at all.

Day 6 – Itinerary – Mt Fuji in Yamanashi Prefecture

  • Matsumoto Castle
  • Lake Yamanaka
  • Hotel Mt.Fuji , Yamanashi

You can see Mt Fuji from almost everywhere, even in Central Japan.  You can include Yamanaka Lake then choose to stay in Mt Fuji Hotel in Yamanashi, the view is stunning as you get to see the unblocked view of Mt Fuji from the balcony of your hotel room.

Day 7 – Itinerary – Hakone in Kanagawa Prefecture

  • Mt Fuji Station 5 ( Gotemba Trail)
  • Hakone Hotel Kowakien

Hakone is not in Central Japan but in Kanagawa Prefecture, quite near to Tokyo, only slightly more than an hour away from Tokyo.  Hakone is famous for its hot springs and you are still able to see Mt Fuji from here. There are several things to do in Hakone and we choose to do a train ride to Odawara.

Day 8 – Itinerary- Nagoya in Aichi Prefecture

  • Toyota museum in Nagoya
  • Meitetsu Inn Chitahandaeki

If you love cars, then the Toyota Museum is the place to spend for a few hours.  In this huge museum, you are not only seeing Toyota cars from vintage to modern, but you also see all the fun and sporty cars from manufacturers around the world.  I am not really into cars but I have to be honest, I enjoy this car museum so much!

Day 9 – Itinerary Nagoya Airport

  • Nagoya Airport

My Budget for 3  Pax:

  • Air ticket from Singapore to Nagoya – SGD 600-700 per pax with SIA promotion. Total: SGD 2100 for 3 pax
  • Hotel for 3 pax inclusive breakfast & onsen (hot springs) 3-5 stars : SGD $150-$220 per night. Roughly SGD $1600
  • Car Rental plus insurance for 8 days: SGD $1,000
  • Misc & petrol & food: SGD $1,000 – $2,000 (We usually have our meals in family restaurants along the highway and it cost about SGD $10-20 dollars per person.)
  • Total spent for 3 pax for 9 days 8 nights in Central Japan: SGD $6700 so SGD$2300 per pax.

Additional Note

This is only my budget and it works as a guideline for you.  It really depends on what kind of hotel you stay in.  If you choose to stay in Airbnb (click on my Airbnb link to get discount) which can accommodate with more people and prepare your own breakfast & dinner, you can save quite a bit too. Most of my hotel stay in the Central Region are with luxury onsen/hot springs so the prices of the hotel cost a little more.  If you choose a hotel without onsen/hot spring, the price can be even lower.

Another way to save money is you may want to get your breakfast in the convenient store such as “Lawson”  or “7 Eleven” which can be found almost every 500m and open 24 hours. Food in the convenience store are cheap and affordable and plenty of variety to choose from.  Please check out their bento set, Oden & Japanese dessert in the convenient stores.

“Family restaurant” is casual dining in Japan which has a free parking area and food are cheap and in a bigger portion. Some of the famous chains are called Royal Host, Denny’s, Joyful, Gusto and many more. The family restaurant usually serves a combination of Japanese & Western cuisine & Chinese.  Don’t hesitate to drive in and try out their meal in the Japanese “Family Restaurant” as it provides a good value meal.

This is so awesome! I believe that to get to know a place, it’s better to drive around it… you see way more. I also like to see smaller towns that show the culture than big cities full of tourists.

' src=

Road trip and self drive will enable to discover many hidden gems!

' src=

Wow! This is a beautiful place. What an exciting adventure!

' src=

Road trips are the best. They give you the opportunity to really see and experience the various places. You look like you had a wonderful time.

Dear Benita,

Now more and more people started to drive in Japan with the help of technologies such as google map, we won’t easily get lost. Even if we do, we can also ask google translator to help us to ask around to the local.

' src=

Road trip with amazing views, looks real real fun

' src=

It looks like you had a great time, I love a road trip where you can drive yourself, the freedom is second to none.

Dear Elizabeth,

Yes, one thing with self drive on road trip is freedom to explore anywhere and stop anywhere you wish. At least you don’t have to run to catch the train or buses. Catching the train with big luggage can be very challenging as some of the train station in Japan do not have lift up and down the station.

' src=

Love your photos! The scenery (and your outfits) are so beautiful! Japan is on my bucket list, and I hope to be able to visit someday!

Dear Amber,

Thanks for your comment. Japan is a beautiful country, it is clean and full of traditional elements in most of the old town. The shopping is greet fun too.

' src=

It looks like you had an amazing itinerary. I will surely add this to my bucket lists it looks so exciting.

Dear Shubhada,

Central Japan is a great place to do a road trip with rental car, there are not many traffic compared to big cities like Osaka and Tokyo area. If you have family with young children and grandparents, this is truly a highly recommended way to see Japan. All sit in the car rental and enjoy great bonding while sightseeing Central Japan. And , the most important thing is, cost saving.

' src=

Love a road trip would love to do one next weekend. Looks like you had a great time

Dear Taslyn,

Glad to hear that you are doing a raod trip soon and I hope you have a great time too.

' src=

Road trips can be so fun, too! What a great way to see more of a country and on your schedule, too!

Dear Ayana,

I totally agree! We can choose our own schedule and do any impromptu stop at any scenic area along the way.

' src=

I love a nice roadtrip! All the pictures you show are stunning, the landscape and you! All your outfits are so lovely 🙂

The road trip in Central Japan is really beautiful, especially places where you can see the iconic Mt Fuji.

' src=

Wow, I’ve never been to Japan and I will definitely need to learn driving before I can think of a roadtrip. But Japan definitely seems like a great place to start with!

Dear Tiffany,

If you have not been to Japan, you should go as it is one of the best place to visit. The country is both old and new element to see. Some places and city are very ancient which is hard to find these days. You can always go with friends who know how to drive and you can help read the google map or help feeding the driver to make sure he/she is awake. Lol

' src=

I love a road trip, it is probably the best way to visit and enjoy the beauty of any place. I am glad that you had a great time!

Dear Vaundhra,

You are right, self drive on the road trip is one of the best way to explore Central Japan. You have the freedom to go anywhere you like and stop anytime you feel like.

' src=

Thanks very much for sharing your experience with us. I’m planning a trip to Nagoya then Takayama and Shirakawago on 28th Nov. Appreciate your kind advice if it is better to drive from Nagoya to Takayama and then from Takayama, do a day trip drive to Shirakawago or should I take public bus from Nagoya to Takayama and register for a half day tour trip to Shirakawago? We’re a family of 3. Is it easy to drive from Nagoya to Takayama as I understand that it’s a 2 hours drive? Will there be snow on the road? Fyi, I’ve driven in long distance drive in South of New Zealand, Japan Hokkaido, Yamanakako & Karuizawa and Santorini Greece before.

Dear Maybel, Thanks for your comment. If you have some self-drive experiences in other countries, then driving in Central Japan Nagoya Takayama Shiragawa-go should not be an issue. Your concern on the snow would highly depend on the weather forecast. Japanese weather forecast is 99% accurate. You can check two weeks before your departure. If the snow is not heavy you are still able to drive up. The drive to Takayama mountain was not too hard for us in the mid of Nov. No snow but two days later there was huge snow. So it is really depending on the weather forecast. Please arrive at Shirakawa-Go as early as possible else the car park will be full and your car has to queue outside the carpark. We arrive before 10 am.

I have a write up on car rental in Japan in details and you may want to find out more about renting car and road trip condition in Japan.

Sorry for the late reply as I am on the Australia road trip now.

Hello, I heard that the highway tolls in Japan are very expensive but you have not mention any tolls in your post. Did you have a pass or the roads that you drive along do not have tolls? Also, I am curious whether is it difficult to find parking and whether is the parking expensive?

Dear Andrew,

Thank you for your questions.

I have written a more recent blog on Hiroshima Shikoku and Kansai road trip which includes how much I paid for toll roads and other information regarding self-drive in Japan. It has about 40 blogs and you can learn about the tips and what to expect, eat and stay in Japan.

http://thinkerten.com/wordpress/2019/04/hiroshima-shikoku-kansai-japan-self-drive-itinerary-a-complete-guide/

“How to rent a Car in Japan”, will tell all the details about car rental and highway and parking condition in Japan. http://thinkerten.com/wordpress/2019/03/how-to-rent-a-car-in-japan-touchdown-from-hiroshima-airport/

You asked if there are other roads that are not charged in Japan? The answer is YES. When you key in the destination in the GPS in the car, (rental car usually comes with a GPS), it will display few options to choose from. One is without toll and it also tells you how long to arrive in each route. Please refer to the above blog “how to rent a car”, it has the picture of the GPS and routes to choose. Toll road routes do not necessarily always the fastest to arrive at your destination. I have tried non-toll road too, it has a lot of traffic lights and the speed is only at 60-80kmph, but you get to see the local neighborhood and the daily’s life look like. Sometimes, you can just stop at the supermarket and shop like the locals. Most of the supermarket has huge parking lots outside the building to attract customers to come in. The supermarket has very good ready-made food, most importantly very cheap. You can have lunch there as some also provide tables and chairs for you to have their ready-made bento.

For Parking in Japan, it really depends on which part of Japan. Anywhere outside the Tokyo area is not that hard to get parking. Say if you are planning a road trip to Central Japan. Most parking areas are not charged, especially if you are at outskirt visiting shrines. Most of the hotel that I booked also provide free and easy parking for Central Japan. I remembered I did not pay so much for parking for the Central Japan road trip. For Shirakawa-go (one of the important sites in Central Japan), there is a huge parking area but it is charged at a reasonable price. Shirakawa-Go parking is always crowded because it is a Unesco Site and very popular among tourists local and overseas. One tip I can give you is driving there before 10 am, else you have to wait outside the carpark when the carpark is full. (For Shiragawa-Go site I mean)

As for other parts of Central Japan, the parking was not too hard as compared to my recent Kansai (Osaka)’s road trip. If you have your itinerary plan made, please also include the nearest spot to park your car in your itinerary plan. Research where to park your car near the attraction that you want to visit first. (FYI, anywhere outside Tokyo do not have so many people, the population and cars are way lesser and that make Japan (except Tokyo) is so easy to do self-drive) Furthermore, Japanese people behave and drive politely.

I hope I have answered your questions but if you still have further queries, please do not hesitate to ask. I am more than willing to share my experience with you.

Do check on my latest self-drive guide for Hiroshima Shikoku Kansai(Kyoto-Osaka-Nara), it tells you about Japan highway condition & Highway rest area, petrol station, convenient stores, supermarket (how to save), onsen etiquette, Japanese style hotel/ryokan style vs Japanese western-style hotel, Japanese Food and many more.

Hi, am very impressed with your self drive trip in Japan. Am planning one in autumn next year. I just wish to know if parking are expensive and also about the tolls. Would appreciate your advise. My itinerary would cover Tokyo, Nikko, Hakone, Mt. Fuji, Alpine Route, Kyoto, Hiroshima and Osaka.

Dear Violet,

Thanks for your comment.

I was pretty impressed with your itinerary which covers so many places and how long are you planning to stay?

Renting a car is a good choice as driving is really easy and no traffic anywhere out of Tokyo. About the toll charges, it does not cost a lot if you are not including Shikoku island as for my recent trip, Hiroshima-Shikoku-Kyoto-Nara-Osaka, it cost more because Shikoku Island has many bridges (Shimanami Kaido) connecting those little islands. Those stunning bridges cost more to cross over.

Please ask for ETC (Electronic Toll Charge) from the car rental counter as ETC will help you to save 20-30% than paying cash. It is postpaid so you can pay after you return your car and every toll roads you used is itemized.

You may want to find out about car rental, highway road condition and other tips from the below link. The GPS in the car will tell you a few routes to choose from. It shows you how long, how far, how much each route is going to cost you. Charges route doesn’t mean it is the fastest to reach your destination. Click the link and there are few pictures to show the GPS machine.

This is the summary itinerary for my recent trip to Japan, it has all the budget on how much I spent and where to stay. It may work as a reference for you.

As for parking, anywhere outside the big city, Tokyo, Osaka, Kyoto are basically free. Compared to my UK self-drive, Japan cost less on parking.

Please don’t hesitate to ask more questions as I am very happy to share my experience with you. Happy planning:)

hi, i know this is an old post but wonder if you can advise. 1. You drove from tokyo to nagoya on your last leg..did u do a stopover ? How long is this route ? 2. Did u stay in tokyo city or outskirt of tokyo?

thanks alot.

Dear Veronica,

1 We didn’t drive to Tokyo to Nagoya. Tokyo is never a good place to drive, so please avoid driving into Tokyo.

2. We always drive outskirt of Tokyo. We flew to Nagoya and do Central Japan self drive, not Tokyo area.
