Severin Safari Camp

Severin safari camp is one of just three camps in kenya’s remote tsavo west national park, wedged between mzima springs and the mighty tsavo river..

One of only three tented camps in remote Tsavo West National Park, Severin Safari Camp is wedged on very flat terrain between the famously clear, isolated Mzima Springs and the mighty Tsavo River. Designed to blend into the natural surroundings, the camp contains 27 simple but comfortable tented suites with private verandas overlooking the pristine bush.

As the premises are unfenced, guests are accompanied by Maasai warriors while walking between their rooms and the main restaurant, bar and lounge area, with the opportunity to spot the camp’s many wild residents en route. There is also a swimming pool and a day spa where massages can be enjoyed.

Game drives in the prolific reserve take place in open 4WD vehicles. Unusual for a property within a national park, Severin Safari Camp offers guests the opportunity to participate in half-day bush walks accompanied by armed rangers as well as interesting night vehicle safaris. The crystalline Mzima Springs are also worth a visit, for its resident crocodiles and hippos.

How to get to Severin Safari Camp

Severin Safari Camp is approximately 250km or just over 5 hours from Nairobi by road. Alternatively, you can take a scheduled or charter flight from Nairobi Wilson Airport to the nearest airstrip (Finch Hattons or Kilaguni), around 30 minutes’ drive from the camp.

Day 1 Severin Safari Camp

We will transfer you in the morning to the train station in Nairobi or Mombasa and the SGR drops you via Chyulu Hills to the second largest park – Tsavo West, famed for the notorious “Man Eaters of Tsavo”. The man eating lions preyed on the railway linesmen building the great Uganda Railway.

You will get off in Mtito Andei the small town exactly in the middle between Nairobi and Mombasa. The driver from Severin Safari Camp will pick you up and you will drive around 1 hour through the National Park to the camp. If you are lucky you might see already a leopard on your drive to the camp. The area around Severin Safari Camp is well known for all big cats.

Check-in on arrival followed by late lunch. In the afternoon you can relax in the Kenbali Spa or watch from your tent terrace the game. The camp has 5 water wholes. You will spot a lot of African wildlife.

Severin Safari Camp is hidden in the remote Kitani Wildlife area of Tsavo West National Park overlooking the Mt. Kilimanjaro. The eco friendly luxury camp offers a unique combination of adventure, wellness and relaxation for the sophisticated traveler who loves romantic pampering and unique wildlife experiences. The remote location of the camp and that it is un-fenced allows wildlife to cross the floodlit waterholes. Maasai warriors guard the camp ground 24 hours and accompany guests after darkness to and from the tents. The camp offers 27 luxurious accommodations with complimentary WIFI spread over 25 hectares of bush land.

Day 2 Maasai walk and game drive

In the morning after breakfast you will take a walk with a Maasai guide and he will explain how locals read tracks and overleft of the game in the wild and which plants are helpful in their daily life. You will have lunch in the bush before you go on an afternoon game drive.

Tsavo West and East National Park is recognized as the third largest national park in the world and rich with great herds of elephants, giraffes, zebras and impalas passing through the area in search for patches of grass. With over 22.000 square kilometers there is a lot to discover during the game drives. We recommend guests to visit the Mzima Springs, Roaring Rocks, Rhino Sanctuary, Poacher’s Lookout, Taita and Chyulu Hills, Chaimu Crater and the various lava caves as the Laviathan. The Khama Rhino Sanctuary Trust is a community based wildlife project, established in 1992 to assist in saving the vanishing rhino, and to restore an area formerly teeming with wildlife to its previous natural state.

Your game drive will end with a sundowner at the Poacher´s Lookout. After dinner you can review your day at the bonfire.

You will start your day with an early morning game to spot the Leopards around the camp. The camp is even in the territory of one Leopard. Sometimes at night he is enjoying the sun bed at Kenbali Spa. Also big cats like it homely.

The park offers remark-able views with a variety of habitats ranging from mountains, river forest, lakes and wooded grassland. It is also an excellent park for visitors who enjoy walking, offering a number of nature trails and the opportunity to explore the Chaimu volcanic Lava. If time allows enjoy time within the Rhino sanctuary for the opportunity to see the endangered Rhinocerous.

After the late breakfast you will enjoy the camp and the Kenbali Spa andenjoy a “safari” massage.

About Severin Safari Camp

Severin Safari Camp is situated in Kenya's Tsavo West National Park, just across the border from Mount Kilimanjaro. At over 9,000 square kilometres, Tsavo West is a sizeable park best known for its red earth, vast plains and big elephants. While the wildlife often disperses during the summer months, it congregates around the few permanent sources of water from June to October making for highly productive game viewing. Severin is set amongst the umbrella-ed acacias, on a wide open plain that teems with wildlife, and although quite a large lodge, Severin does a commendable job of keeping a wild feel about it, while maintaining an impressive level of luxury for the price.

Because the camp is unfenced, it's highly likely you'll see a fair few beasts around your room.

Shaped like an artist's palette, the glistening blue pool provides much needed reprieve from the heat and the adjacent spa will make you feel young again.

This is where some of Africa's biggest tuskers reside - line one up in your camera's viewfinder with a classic umbrella thorn acacia and the rolling hills in the background for a truly classic shot.

The property

The main building consists of an open-sided lounge and dining room with a high thatched ceiling to keep things cool. In the lounge, there's three sofas and lots of canvas camp chairs, positioned to look directly out onto the bush and at the rear, a lovely wooden bar for sampling the local cocktails! There's also a small gym with a bike, a treadmill and a few weights but the most attractive part of camp is, without doubt, the sizable pool and beautiful spa.

There are twenty-seven rooms in total, spread out relatively closely in an arc and looking out towards several small waterholes and the bush beyond. They include twenty-one octagonal tents, simply furnished and most with twin beds, and two junior "Mawenzi" suites, and four cottage suites. Suites are almost double the size of the tents (with an extra lounge area), and their bathrooms come with bathtubs or outdoor showers. The suites are also further from the main area and afford more privacy.

One more thing...

Severin somehow makes you feel special, instead of just a part of the usual tourist traffic. Be sure to take them up on the guided walk to Mzima Springs, which is an authentic African adventure.

Game drives are the best way to see the park's impressive scenery and wildlife. The ephemeral Tsavo River attracts large numbers of game, including elephant, while the distant mountains and volcanoes provide a perfect backdrop to the acacia-dotted plains. The park is also home to the world's longest continuous lava flow whose blackness is in stark contrast to the otherwise red earth. The Mzima Spring, with its underwater hide, provides unique viewing of swimming hippos and crocodiles. You can also book a two-hour long night drive to search out some nocturnal action. The best game viewing is between June and October, though the park is prettiest after the summer rains.

The camp was at amazing location and the tents was quite clean , spacious and had all the things you would need. The Camp is 5 star if not include food in your review the food was not good at unfortunately and they did not cater well to vegetarians or even to anyone who ate chicken . luckily we were there only one night otherwise the food would have been problem . Breakfast was fine but chef def needs to do better when it come to veg. food.

Kitani Banda

The 8 Kitani Bandas are equipped with a 4,5 sqm kitchenette with a fridge, plates, pots, cutlery, glasses and cups as well as with small cookers with gas and sinks. A table and chairs are at your disposal. Additionally, there is a 5,7 sqm bathroom with towels and running hot and cold water, toilet and shower. The sleeping rooms have a size of 25 sqm and can be equipped with up to 3 beds per cottage. These are provided with duvet covers and mosquito nets. From the roofed veranda you look directly to your private fireplace and can watch the animals passing by. The perfect base to discover the breathtaking landscape and animal kingdom on your own.

Guests are allowed to use the free WIFI and the pool & gym at the nearby camp area. You will also find a private parking lot directly beside your banda as well as a room steward.The Kitani Lodge is situated about 1,5 km away from Severin Safari Camp.
