The Best Handicap Accessible RVs

The 6 Best Handicap Accessible RVs And Motorhomes

Aaron Richardson

  • 16 minutes read

Having a disability shouldn’t limit someone from enjoying all the things that the RV lifestyle has to offer.

To that point, a large number of well-known RV manufacturers are offering reimagined takes on some of their most popular models that are more handicap accessible than ever before.

If you or someone in your family is disabled, you might be wondering what are some of the best handicap accessible RVs?

Right off the bat, the 2020 Winnebago Forza 34T AE and the 2021 Newmar – Kountry Star 4011 are two very well-designed wheelchair-friendly RVs from well-known RV manufacturers with a reputation for thoughtful travel trailers, and motorhomes. Though these are just two large Class A motorhome that jump off the page as both Newmar and Winnebago have embraced handicap accessible RV models.

If you are looking for something in the way of a travel trailer, then the 2021 Harbor View HV-36CKBB travel trailer might be at the top of the list.

It also rubs shoulders with Dune Sport’s lineup of customizable handicap accessible RVs, like the Dune Sport H-2 28-Foot Custom Wheelchair Accessible Toy Hauler.

To truly find the best handicap accessible RVs to meet your family’s needs, we took an in-depth look at the marketplace.

This included reviewing some of the most popular RV manufacturers and the special models they offer to accommodate the needs of handicapped travelers who hear the adventurous beaconed call of the RV lifestyle.

IN THIS ARTICLE

Handicap Accessible RV Features

Throughout our reviewing process, we kept an eye out for some critical features that were either installed in a particular RV model or were an affordable optional upgrade that could be performed by the manufacturer or the dealership.

A Ramp Or Lift

This is a must-have feature for most people with mobility issues as well as those who are wheelchair-bound.

Wider Doorways Or Access Ports

Wheelchairs tend to require wider doors and you usually find wider doors being part of other wheelchair accessible features.

An Open Floorplan

While it isn’t necessarily a must, most of the best handicap accessible RVs also use some sort of open floor plan or open concept to maximize the available floor space.

Height Adjustable Counters

Counters, tables, and dinette eating areas with an adjustable height feature also tend to be popular in the best handicap accessible RVs. Especially for those who are wheelchair-bound.

Seating & Beds With Adjustable Headrests

Power-adjustable or easy manual adjusting headrests in common seating and sleeping areas can also be important for disabled individuals who need to maintain a certain posture to be comfortable or eat safely.

Roll-In Wet Baths & Shower

A lot of standard RV’s have a basin or some sort of lip on the front of the shower or the wet bath. This is intended to keep water from accidentally pouring out.

Though some of the best handicap accessible RVs will have a shower and wet bath areas that can be modified with a sealable door in the front of the basin.

This is very similar to a lot of popular residential handicap accessible showers and bathtubs.

Some of these shower stalls also have some sort of seat to allow people to rest comfortably while bathing.

Safety Bars & Handles

A lot of handicap accessible RV bathrooms and sleeping areas will have safety bars and handles to help disabled individuals safely move in the room or change positions.

Best Handicap Accessible RV Reviews

There are several types and sizes of handicap RVs worth considering. Each has its own strengths and appeals to certain traveling styles.

For some people, a handicap accessible motorhome is a must-have for bringing as many of the comforts of home with them as possible.

While others are happy to have a handicap accessible travel trailer to tow behind them from Point A to Point B.

Throughout the reviewing process we tried to cast a broad net to find options that appeal to a wide range of disabled RV adventurers.

Updated April 5, 2024

We’ve had quite a few subscribers ask about our opinion of the best handicap-accessible RVs. We explored the best motorhomes and handicap-accessible RVs manufactured on the market in 2024 to come up with our list.

You’ll learn how they’ve approached wheelchair accessibility and ADA compliance. We’ll then show you the best features and false steps they’ve made in the current-year models.

What is ADA Compliance and Certification ?

The ADA stands for the American Disabilities Act was originally signed into law by President George H.W. Bush in 1990 (colloquially known as George Senior). Title III of the ADA states that all commercial structures must give people with disabilities equal access. The act went through updates in 2010 and 2019 to stay current to new public spaces that came through technological advancement.

The Act is overseen by the Department of Justice and uses both professional staff and volunteers to enforce, investigate, and certify all aspects that fall under the Act’s jurisdiction.  Local and state governments are the first levels of enforcement, but some cases have gone to the federal level.

Objectively, recreational vehicles don’t fall under the guidelines of Title III of the ADA. Newmar claims to have ADA Approval on its components but does not have a certification. The ADA allows certifications to those elements that fall under its purview.

Who Are The Top Manufacturers of Handicap Accessible RVs?

The top manufacturers of handicap-accessible RVs are currently Winnebago and Newmar. Each brand has taken major steps to make more handicapped-accessible RVs available on the market without requiring upgrades or alterations.

We hope to see many more RV manufacturers continue to follow suit! This article features the best accessibility offerings from Newmar and Winnebago.

The Class B Maxvan Pat hway is a great way to escape to the open road in a vehicle that is ready for adventure no matter your abilities. It has an innovative rear ramp that allows wheelchair users to roll into the van without needing a hydraulic lift.

Once inside, part of the rear floor, which doubles as a ramp can be electrically raised to provide a flat floor space. You can also opt for other features such as an overhead trolley system for easy lifting of passengers and a front passenger area platform for secure wheelchair tie-down.

Other features include a large sofa that easily converts to a lounge or a small queen bed. With an additional 8 inches of interior width, you even have space to walk around the bed. The overhead trolley can also be installed to assist the wheelchair user in and out of bed.

Even in this cozy camper van, you will have plenty of storage with open front shelves with netting and a wardrobe to hang your clothing.

It also has a power swing-style door along with wall-mount and key fob controls which allow the wheelchair user to independently enter and exit the coach. The extendable dinette provides easy wheelchair access but folds away for more room when not in use.

This rig also boasts an expanded hallway and a larger bathroom area for easy maneuvering. The roll-in shower and assist bar allow ample accessibility. The placement of the systems monitor, generator, and light switches, as well as remote control roof vents and adjustable showerhead, puts all the control in your reach.

GVWR: 8,900 pounds

Tank Capacities: Fuel, 24 gal; Freshwater 12 gal; Grey, 13 gal

While the Winnebago Roam may not be the largest RV on our list at just under 20 feet, it is a wheelchair-accessible Class B with many awesome features.

Getting in and out of the RV is made simple with the Braun UVL wheelchair lift with a wireless remote. Once you are in, the integrated tie-downs secure the wheelchair and allow you to use it as another seat while you travel.

Of course, the Roam is designed with accessibility in mind. Check out the galley with a refrigerator, microwave, and sink, and an outlet for an induction cooktop. You can stop your travel and cook at your leisure.

Compartments and storage areas are also designed to provide easy access with specially-crafted duffels provided for easier loading and unloading.

Its shorter length also allows greater maneuverability so you can take it on the road for a trip or drive it every day. The swivel chair driver’s seat makes getting in and out a breeze.

Can I Add a Chair Lift to My RV?

Yes, you can add a chair lift to your RV to make it more accessible. Check out our article called CoachLift: Making RVing Accessible For Everyone for all the details.

Handicap Accessible RVs: Each Brand’s Perspectives

Newmar and Winnebago take different approaches making an RV handicap accessible. Newmar was the first to offer the built-in lift from BraunAbility in their 2012 models. All three of their 40-foot motorhomes, known as the Newmar Mobility Lineup, have features that cater to those who are wheelchair-bound.

Newmar created the industry’s first and largest line of wheelchair-accessible motorhomes designed and engineered from the ground up, with direct guidance and oversight from wheelchair users themselves.

Winnebago introduced three motorhomes at the Tampa Bay RV Show in 2019. Each can be tailor-made based on the disabled person’s needs. You work with a representative in Winnie’s Specialty Vehicle Department customizing your chosen unit for your disabled loved one and everyone else in the family.

Winnebago’s three Accessibility-Enhanced RVs are the Intent 30R AE, Adventurer 30T AE, and Forza 34T AE, which feature the most common customization requests, including:

  • Platform wheelchair lift with an 800-pound lifting capacity
  • Powered roll-up lift door, with wall mount and key-fob remote controls for wheelchair entry and exit
  • Expanded hallway and bathroom areas for greater accessibility featuring:
  • Large roll-in shower with an assist bar and available folding bench seat, with extended lever faucet controls and adjustable shower head
  • Raised toilet with assist bars
  • Roll under sink
  • Electric adjustable queen bed
  • Thermostatically or remote-control roof vents
  • Wall-mounted light and generator switches
  • Lower installation of the systems monitor panel
  • Optional 6-way power transfer seat
  • Optional lower microwave placement

In addition to these standard features, customized features on a Winnebago Accessibility-Enhanced RV are available, including bed and toilet height specification, placement of handrails, ceiling track system installation for mobility without a wheelchair, specific furniture requirements, cabinetry, and aesthetic changes.

Final Words About Handicap Accessible RVs

Handicap-accessible RVs are available so that anyone who wants to participate in traveling can. They come in many shapes and sizes, from the big, beautiful, and luxurious Class As to the small and maneuverable Class Bs. No matter the size, manufacturers have loaded these rigs with spacious and thoughtful designs.

If you dream of adventure and taking to the open road, don’t be held back by your limitations. The RV world is open to everyone and manufacturers are on board to help everyone find their niche in the RV community.

SureHands Home Mobility Lifts and Homecare Ceiling Lifts allow for independent living. Power Patient Lift and Care Systems assist people with reduced mobility

My issue is more with a walker, no other equipment. What would be your recommendation. Weakness makes steps pretty challenging, as well, Thanks for any thoughts ~Susan

If we wanted to start fresh with a Newmar 40’ish sized RV and spec it out for a wheelchair user, how long would it take?

Do any of the rv’s allow for a handicap person to drive. Away for someone like me who will travel alone to get in in my powerchair and be able to get out of it and into the driver’s seat. I can’t walk but I can still drive.

Limited movement in one leg do to stroke and TBI. No movement in one arm. Any devices to help get in the side door of a class c Forest river sunseeker. Thanks for any suggestions.

all i need is a travel trailer with a decent size shower not as much as ADA but big enough to put a shower bench in and room to get in bed nothing more mary jones

This is all nice and dancy but you should not be talking about “handicap” accessible vehicles but “wheechair” accessible. On top of being incorrect grammatically – it would need to be “handicapped” -, the word “handicap” has a derogative connotation.

We are looking for a small USED RV to purchase that has handicap accesability. It is just for us two nothing over 22 foot please.

I have been looking for an accessible towable camper for my husband. We have a permanent site at a campground and have a ramp built up so he can get in the camper. The problem is the bathroom is not accessible with the lift. I have been trying to find a camper with a rear bathroom and a door that is wide enough to accommodate the lift. Any suggestions?

I don’t think it needs to be this complicated and $$$ just make the entrance like the roll in vans, wider door or suicide doors, then if it has pop out sides it will work, everything for the handicapped does not have to cost a fortune, why does it?

Looking for a RV that would work for us. Husband is handicapped and need lift for chair and other amenities. Looking to not go over 30,000 $. If anything Comes to mind let me know. Or if you have any idea of where to look please let me know. Thanks so very much for your time. Eileen

Why haven’t we seen any towable RVs with wheelchair lifts or other ADA considerations?

Hi Brian, Towable RVs have lightweight frames that can’t currently support the wheelchair lift. We’re sure manufacturers like Winnebago are kicking the idea around, but the lift requires strong support and a lot of power to work correctly.

Another reason has to do with the costs and conveniences. Many people in wheelchairs need the accessibility to lay down, connect their medical equipment up, or need other features while traveling. On the manufacturing side, the costs to add specialized cabinetry and appliances can only be offset by the more expensive RVs.

Safe travels!

If you or a family member are in a wheelchair, you may think that RVing is not a realistic travel option. Images of unwieldy manual towing equipment, steep stairs and tight spaces probably spring to mind before wheelchair accessible RVs do. But, in fact, RV travel has a lot of perks that are great for travelers in wheelchairs.

You take your home with you, so there’s always a clean and accessible bathroom that’s just yours, ready for use. You have a bed handy if you get tired of driving and need to lie down for a while. If you have special dietary needs, your kitchen is always right there with you too, so you don’t need to worry about finding a restaurant in a strange city. No ADA hotel rooms available? No problem!

Of course, not all RVs are designed with wheelchair access in mind. Most recreational vehicles don’t come standard with ramps or lifts. And size does matter; many smaller units are just not wide enough to accommodate a wheelchair. Even large Class A RVs or fifth wheels probably don’t come with a roll-in shower or assist bars.

Table of Contents

So what are the best RVs for wheelchair accessibility?

Joe and I have toured a lot of RVs throughout the years and we’ve attended just about every RV show and factory tour we have come across in our RV travels. So when we started to get questions about wheelchair accessible RVs , we decided to create a list of all the best options we could find.

These are the best resources we’ve found for those interested in ADA-compatible RV travel.

What makes a wheelchair accessible RV?

wheelchair accessible RVs

First things first. What kinds of modifications should you be looking for in a wheelchair accessible RV?

Whether you’re looking for a custom build or an RV made “stock” by a major RV manufacturer, here are the considerations we’ve found that will impact most RVers in wheelchairs.

  • Ramp or lift . Most wheelchair accessible RVs include a power lift. Some (like toy haulers) may also have a ramp that’s usable for getting into the RV from ground level.
  • Wider doorways . To accommodate the width of a chair, you’ll find wider doorways than standard in accessible RVs. This goes for both exterior and interior doors.
  • Open floorplan . Inside, floorplans will be more open and contain wider hallways to allow maneuverability.
  • Height adjustments . Heights are lowered for things like counter tops, table tops, appliances and switches. This puts them in reach from a sitting position.
  • Adjustable headrest . Some higher-end RVs will have a bed with a headrest that can be raised and lowered with a power switch.
  • Extendable dinettes and recessed sink cabinets . Both modifications are designed to allow travelers to remain in their chair while they’re using the dining table or sink.
  • Roll-in shower or wet bath . Most RV showers have a raised lip to prevent flooding, but wheelchair accessible RVs will have a roll-in shower and assist bar. Some even have space for a transfer seat or shower bench.

Wheelchair Accessible RVs by Type

Below is a list of all the wheelchair accessible RVs we found broken down by RV type.

  • Class A RVs
  • Class B RVs
  • Class C RVs

Class A Wheelchair Accessible Motorhome

At the time of writing, only two major manufacturers have lines specifically dedicated to wheelchair accessibility: Winnebago and Newmar.

Winnebago Wheelchair Accessible RV

Winnebago wheelchair accessible RV

Winnebago has an entire line of wheelchair accessible RVs, which they call their Accessibility Enhanced line . Their goal is “convenience and opportunity without sacrificing style or function.” The idea is that customers shouldn’t have to compromise on what they want in an RV in order to have an accessible travel experience.

Winnebago currently offers two Class A wheelchair accessible motorhomes for sale through their dealer network. These RVs come standard with wheelchair accessibility features.

  • The Forza/Inspire is their mid-entry diesel pusher at just under 36 feet in length. The motorhome is designed with wider aisle for accessibility and comes equipped with a BraunAbililty Century-2 wheelchair lift.
  • The Adventurer , a 31-foot gas coach, is their mid-range option. There’s no adjustable headrest bed, but the modified countertops, roll-in shower, assist bars and accessible dinettes/furniture are all standard for Winnebago.

Winnebago wheelchair accessible motorhome

Winnebago is very active in the conversation around ensuring that RVing is accessible to all. They even have a dedicated Instagram account for their Accessibility Enhanced RVs and customers.

Newmar Wheelchair Accessible RV

Our first motorhome was a Newmar Class A RV, so Newmar has a special place in our hearts. The Newmar brand name tends to make people think of luxury, and their wheelchair accessible line of coaches is no exception.

They market themselves as “the world’s first and largest wheelchair accessible Class A motor coaches.” At 40 feet and above, it’s true that Newmar’s floorplans are larger than any others we could find. All of their models provide a wide, straight aisle from front to back.

Newmar has multiple wheelchair accessible RV options. These models have extra-wide aisles, power-adjusted dinettes, lowered counters and switches, and roll-in showers. Beds include adjustable Sleep Number mattresses for a comfortable night’s sleep. Wheelchair lifts are all BraunAbility power lifts.

  • The Dutch Star 4311 is their high-end diesel offering. This coach is considered one of the luxury wheelchair accessible RVs in the space. It even comes with a height-adjusted dishwasher.
  • The Ventana 4311 is their mid-range offering. It’s also a diesel coach.
  • The Canyon Star 3911 is a gas coach and was the industry’s first non-retrofit wheelchair accessible motorhome. It’s worth noting that Newmar has been making accessible RVs as part of their official line longer than any other major manufacturer.

Newmar has several blog posts dedicated to their wheelchair accessible customers. Some of these contain travel tips relevant beyond the RV industry, like this one on traveling with teens and tweens with special needs .

For the latest wheelchair accessible RV options from Newmar, visit the Newmar Mobility Lineup page .

Class B Wheelchair Accessible RV

wheelchair accessible RV Tourig

Field Van Custom Wheelchair Accessible RVs

Field Van has over 30 years of experience building custom camper vans and they work on all the major van chassis . While Field Van doesn’t have a “stock” line of campers, you can work with them to design a floor plan that will suit your individual needs.

Among their offerings are: support rails, lowered controls, lowered counters with flip extensions, removable transfer seats, large bathrooms, durable rubberized flooring and siding for scuff protection, and an under-van lift.

TouRig Camper Vans with Wheelchair Access

TouRig is a Colorado custom camper company that specializes in van conversions on the Mercedes Sprinter and Ford Transit chassis. They did their first wheelchair accessible conversion in 2017. You can read the whole (inspiring) story about that first customer on their website .

Winnebago Roam Wheelchair Accessible RV

Winnebago Roam wheelchair accessible RV

Winnebago introduced their first Class B wheelchair accessible RV at the Florida RV Show in Tampa in 2022. The Winnebago Roam is built on the Ram ProMaster chassis with built-in accessibility enhanced features including an under-vehicle wheelchair lift and standard wheelchair tie-downs.

Class C Wheelchair Accessible RV

Born Free Wheelchair Accessible RVs

Born Free went out of business back in 2017, but they still have a bit of a cult following. For many people, Born Free still means durability and quality. They built wheelchair accessible Class C RVs, so you may be able to find a used one on the market by searching for Born Free wheelchair accessible RVs.

We toured a couple of their standard models a few years back if you’re interested in checking them out.

Showhauler Motorhome Conversions

We’ve tour quite a few Showhauler custom motorhomes since we hit the road and even got a chance to check out their factory in Indiana. This company builds custom Super C motorhome conversions for their clients including RVs with a power lift arm. Learn more about Showhauler .

Towable Wheelchair Accessible RV

While motorized options are a bit more common, you can definitely find wheelchair accessible travel trailers out there as well. Toy haulers may seem like an easy choice, since they always have a rear ramp, but don’t forget to factor in interior space and other accessibility features.

Here are some brands we found that make wheelchair accessible travel trailers and fifth wheels.

Harbor View Wheelchair Accessible Travel Trailers

Harbor View is the only RV manufacturer we could find that exclusively makes wheelchair accessible units. All Harbor View trailers come standard with features designed to make travel as easy and enjoyable as possible.

The coolest thing about them is the hand-held remote control system that makes set-up incredibly quick and easy. The remote controls the automatic front and rear stabilizer jacks, slide-outs, electric awning and exterior lights. The tongue jack is also easy-access. The remote-controlled lift and extra-wide power entry door complete the exterior setup.

Inside, you’ll find additional features like accessible countertops, roll-in showers, and assist bars.

Weekend Warrior Wheelchair Accessible 5th Wheels

The Luxe Toy Hauler Fifth Wheel by Weekend Warrior can accommodate customers in wheelchairs with some options offered by the factory. There’s not a lot of information available on their website, but I tested out their chat feature. I got a quick response from someone who was more than happy to answer any questions I had.

Dune Sport Wheelchair Accessible Toy Haulers

Dune Sport also makes custom toy haulers with standard modifications relevant to ADA guidelines. These include a lower trailer stance, widened doorways, ramp gap cover, and enlarged bathroom with roll-in shower.

North American RV Wheelchair Accessible Towables

North American RV lists making wheelchair accessible towables as their specialty. There is some information about their standard options online, but it’s probably best to reach out to them directly for more on your specific requirements.

Wheelchair Accessible RV Upfitters

If you can’t find an RV from a manufacturer that meets your budget, style or functionality requirements, another good option can be to modify an RV. Once you’ve found an RV you like, you may be able to add a lift and make other changes after-market.

Here are some companies that do this type of work. Note that there are many of these nationwide; these are just a few that we’ve heard of.

  • Star T racks Custom Seat Lifts in Elkhart, IN

Wheelchair Accessible RV Rentals

What if you’re not ready to buy? If you haven’t done much RVing yet and want to try it out before making a substantial investment, you can always rent one. The RV rental market has some options available that are wheelchair accessible, so don’t feel as though you can’t take a wheelchair accessible motorhome on a test run.

Rent a Wheelchair Accessible RV

RV rental sites like Outdoorsy allow you to rent RVs directly from owners, so the number of accessible options available depends entirely on who is listing their RV for rent in your area .

Outdoorsy used to have a blog post all about finding wheelchair accessible RVs including tips on working with owners to ensure that you get what you need out of a rental experience. Unfortunately, this resource is no longer available. However, you can still use the “Keyword Search” box under the “More” filters section to look up terms such as “wheelchair” to find an accessible RV for rent.

Wheelchair Accessible RV Clubs and Resources

In the course of writing this article, we came across a couple of resources dedicated to helping those with physical disabilities expand their travel horizons. As lovers of travel ourselves, we were thrilled to find these resources and hope you’ll find them helpful.

Handicapped Travel Club

The Handicapped Travel Club has been around since the 1970s. The founding members had such positive and therapeutic experiences through travel that they wanted to encourage others with disabilities to meet each other and do the same. Their motto is G.O.A.L. : “Get Out And Live.”

The HTC website includes some great information on RVing in accessible vehicles. With over 250 members, it’s also a great community resource if you have questions you just can’t seem to get answered online otherwise.

They publish a newsletter, hold an annual rally, and have local get-togethers as well. Membership is low-cost (annual dues are $10) and available to everyone.

Wheelchairtraveling.com

Wheelchairtraveling.com has articles and resources related to all types of travel, not just RVing. But they do provide an excellent overview of RV travel in a wheelchair . Their article goes very in-depth on things to consider if you’re looking to rent or purchase an RV.

One of the writers also publishes a blog specifically about her RV travels , which contains tips and information along with stories of her experience. She’s even written wheelchair specific destination guides for RVers.

Curb Free with Cory Lee

Curbfreewithcorylee.com is a blog all about “sharing the world from a wheelchair user’s perspective.” Cory shares travel tips, interviews and also his experience in one of Winnebago’s wheelchair accessible RVs .

We hope this article has given you some inspiration and tips on how you can make RVing a part of your life even if you live with a physical disability. We can’t say enough about the good this lifestyle has done for us, and we hope to see you all out there on the road.

*Note: This list is specific to RVs made in the U.S. and Canada, but there may be options available in other countries too. If you know of any, please leave a comment below and let us know!

I am looking for a Class C motorhome (not Super C) manufacturer or dealer that sales or makes accessible RV. Mostly need large bathroom and perhaps a standing lift. Any suggestions?

Thank you for explaining to us that most wheelchair-accessible RVs have a power lift or a ramp to get into the vehicle from the ground level. My sister is paralyzed from the waist down, so she uses a wheelchair to move around. I’ll have to consider this when looking for used handicapped vans for sale to use for our road trip next month.

Hi there. I love what your doing! Can you help me find someone who will rent me a nice wheelchair accessible camper/RV for Gillette WY?

Hey Renee – we updated the post with a link for you to find rentals in WY or anywhere else in the country. Unfortunately there aren’t many accessible RVs out there and even fewer for rent so it will be hard to find something.

We have a 40′ destination unit. My husband and can’t get onto our shower it is a step up. Can we have a step in shower Installed

We are interested in renting an ADA compliant RV. We have an adult daughter who requires wheelchair and other equipment and we feel this is the best option for us to be able to take a trip a couple times a year. We are trying to find rentals.

Hello Russo’s, I am looking to add the power motor assembly to my 2014 Canyon Star 3911 accessible RV, the lift door only has a manual door shock. Would like to add the powered unit if its within my budget. Newmar has not been very helpful.

Thank you, Tim

Could you recommend a company to build a custom wheelchair accessible class b rv? Thanks

We’re looking to buy a class A motorhome with a wheelchair lift. Our budget is up to 30k. Like looking for a needle in a haystack!

I am looking to rent a ADA compliant motorhome with a lift for my family. I have a son with a spinal cord injury I live in port saint lucie, florida I am having a hard time finding one

I have a travel trailer down in Florida when I could still walk.now I’m in a wheelchair and won’t be able to get one until March just was looking for a rental thanks Jim

Hey Jim, you can search RV rental sites to find a wheelchair accessible RV .

I am in a wheelchair and are looking for a travel trailer that we can use a wheel chair in and a way to load it

Hi looking to research handicapped accessible rev to rent. If you have info that would be great. Thanks

If you follow this link to the RV rental site , you can use the filter function to search for keywords such as wheelchair or accessible to narrow down the results.

Thank you for the informative article. One correction, I just checked the Outdoorsy site, and chatted with a rep, they no longer have a filter for handicap accessible. I don’t know why they removed it, but it doesn’t seem feasible to find one without a filter.

Thank you for passing along the update Kelle.

I recently bought a wheelchair accessible class B camper van built on the Ram 3500 ProMaster chassis. You can check it out on YouTube by typing in “PATHWAYRV”. It is made by Adaptive Vans near Atlanta, GA. We love it!

I am looking into a Pathway. Glad to hear that you are happy with it. Thanks for the review.

Optional Features for the Pathway RV.

About The Pathway RV

A history of accessibility.

Since 1999, Adaptive Mobility Systems, Inc. (adaptivevans.com) has been dedicated to providing top-quality wheelchair accessible minivans. However, over the years, we recognized that many individuals with wheelchair-bound family members needed a more spacious option for their travels. Hence, the Maxvan Pathway was born. Allow us to introduce you to this exceptional RV, carefully designed to cater to the needs of wheelchair users and provide an unforgettable travel experience.

Built on a Versatile Platform

The Maxvan Pathway is built on the Ram ProMaster 3500 tall, extended chassis cargo van, renowned for its versatility and cost-effective operation. Unlike its competitors, such as the Ford Transit and Mercedes Sprinter, the ProMaster’s front-wheel-drive configuration allows for a considerably lower rear floor section and increased headroom. This unique advantage also frees up the under-floor space, enabling us to incorporate essential components like water and storage tanks, a generator, and a revolutionary patented rear ramp system.

Innovative Features

With our innovative rear ramp, wheelchair users can easily roll right into the van without the need for hydraulic lifts or platforms. Furthermore, once inside, part of the rear floor, which doubles as the ramp, can be electrically raised to provide a completely flat floor space again. The interior of the Maxvan Pathway is thoughtfully designed to be functional, practical, and easy to maintain, using durable materials that exude a sophisticated European look and feel.

World-Class Quality & Design

Drawing inspiration from the finest European RVs, the Maxvan Pathway features top-quality components, including the Cassette Toilet system, an Italian yacht sink, German polycarbonate, dual-pane windows with bug and privacy screens, and a teak wood shower floorpan. Equipped with a sliding couch that converts into a near-queen-sized bed, a wet bath and shower, refrigerator, sink, TV, water heater, roof-mounted Heat/AC unit, exhaust fan, and Onan electric generator, your travels will be filled with comfort and convenience.

Accessibility Options

While we offer several optional features, such as an overhead trolley system for easy lifting of passengers and a front passenger area platform for secure wheelchair tie-down, the Maxvan Pathway is primarily designed for ambulatory drivers who transport wheelchair occupants. Interior Features

This large sofa easily converts to a lounge or near queen size bed (58.5″ x 76″). Since the cabin expansion provides an additional 8-inches of interior width, there is enough space to walk around the bed. No more crawling over the bed to get to the other side. In addition, an optional overhead trolly can be installed to assist the wheelchair user in and out of bed.

This kitchen has all the features you will need to prepare a well-cooked meal. It includes a stainless-steel sink with glass lid, stainless-steel countertop, single butane burner, 12V fridge, and a roll out storage cart. Once removed, the rolling storage cart also makes space for the wheelchair user to roll under the countertop and easily access all the features of the Pathway’s kitchen. Now you can cook on the go with ease!

Like everything else in the Pathway, this fully featured wet bath was designed with the wheelchair user in mind. Once in the wet bath area, simply close the curtain around you. Inside you will find all the amenities are easily accessible from grab handles, toilet, shower faucets, storage, and mirror.

All the cabinets and storage are lined with carpet and have an open front with netting. We do this because an RV is more like a car than a house. No doors to get in the way, rattle or block the overhead lights when open. You can also fit more in the storage areas without doors, it just makes sense!

Enjoy ample space to hang clothing and a stylish fabric drawer. Our unique hanger system keeps your wardrobe in place even through the quick stops and turns.

Entertainment and Electrical

Entertainment.

Sit on the sofa or lay in bed to watch TV. The adjustable arm bracket can easily extend, pivot, and tilt the TV for the optimal viewing angle and locks in the collapsed position. The 32-inch HD TV conveniently includes a built in DVD player and speakers. With cable hookups, DVD player, HDMI ports, and USB ports you can watch the content you love with ease.

Control Panel

All the important controls are conveniently located together where the wheelchair user has easy access to them. Located next to the 32-inch HD TV are the controls for A/C, heat, lighting, water pump, and viewing water tank levels.

Exterior Features

These acrylic double-pane windows are the standard RV window in Europe for good reason. They are light, energy efficient, awning style (can be opened in the rain) and have privacy and bug screens built in.

Maxvan’s History

The first Maxvan designs started in 2014. There was a limited production run of the Maxvan 1.0 based on the Dodge Caravan chassis which concluded with the 2.0 designs based on the RAM ProMaster Chassis.

Behind the Pathway

From grab handles, accessible controls, and the removable under sink cart, everything in this vehicle was designed with the wheelchair user in mind.

The Maxvan Advantage

Car companies have not used wood for their cars’ structure in over five decades, why should RVs be any different? Our wall, floor, ceiling, and cabinet structures are all steel for superior strength and durability.

RVs and Motorhomes for Disabled Persons

A disabled person need not forgo the joy of camping or traveling. Life in a tent may be physically impossible or impractical, but an RV can be custom designed to adapt for every need of the disabled. Living in a RV camper that is already modified for every necessity allows the disabled individual some mobility without the hassle of restaurants and hotels.

To get inside, there are RV lifts and ramps available. The choice of floor plan and type of RV may have to be fitted with a wheelchair lift ; however the toy-hauler variety is designed with a ramp available at the push of a button.

Accessible Benefits of RVs and Motorhomes

special needs travel trailer

How to Determine Your RV Needs

As there are many types of RVs available, the decision of what to get is based more on personal lifestyle rather than special needs. A popup camper with a ramp will suffice someone who is content to use campground bathroom facilities. A towable travel trailer is larger and usually has a full accessible bathroom . Class A or class C drivable RVs are truly homes on wheels due to their large size and space. Purchasing one new may be expensive, but there are many pre-owned RVs for disabled people available.
