Switzerland Visa and Passport Requirements

Switzerland is not a member of the European Union (EU) but a member of the Schengen Agreement. This means it allows free movements of EU nationals for up to 90 days.

EU nationals : When travelling from one border-free Schengen country to another by car, you are not required to show a passport or national ID card. However, transport providers like airlines, train operators and ferry companies will require you to show your passport or ID card to prove your identity.

Non-EU nationals : You must have a valid passport issued within the past ten years and with at least three months validity after the day you plan to leave, along with a return ticket and sufficient funds for the length of stay.

Beware that EU members such as Cyprus and Ireland are not part of the Schengen area, so a passport or ID card is required if travelling to/from these countries.

Liechtenstein : Regulations apply to Liechtenstein as Switzerland handles immigration and custom enforcement for Liechtenstein.

Basel Airport (BSL), also known as Mulhouse (MLH) or EuroAirport Basel-Mulhouse-Freiburg (EAP) : Passengers arriving at this airport can enter either France or Switzerland, provided that they have the appropriate documentation for the destination country. On the EuroAirport website, it states that pedestrians can cross the border between France and Switzerland inside the terminal even without a plane ticket, but must have a valid passport or identity document. The international section is at the departure level (level 3) and is open between 4am and up to 30 minutes after the last arrival (around midnight). Beware that you can't cross the border through the car parks.

Geneva Airport (GVA), also known as Cointrin Airport : Passengers arriving at this airport can enter either France of Switzerland if they have the appropriate documentation for the destination country. Beware that passengers arriving from an international flight must first pass through the Swiss customs, before they can use the exit to France. Also, only passengers with a valid air ticket for the day (or plus and minus one day) can pass through the international section between France and Switzerland within the airport.

EU nationals : You do not need a visa for Switzerland if the stay is less than 90 day. Those who plan to stay longer will need a residence permit.

Non-EU nationals : Americans, Australians, British and Canadians can travel to Switzerland, and any other Schengen countries, without a visa for up to 90 days in any 180-day period. This applies if you travel as a tourist, to visit family or friends, to attend business meetings, cultural or sports events. For other purposes, you need to check with the Swiss embassy, high commission or consulate in your home country on what type of visa and/or work permit you may need.

The complete list of countries and territories whose nationals can visit Switzerland and any other Schengen countries for up to 90 days in a 180-day period are as follows: Albania, Antigua and Barbuda, Argentina, Australia, Bahamas, Barbados, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Brazil, Brunei, Canada, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, Dominica, El Salvador, Georgia, Grenada, Guatemala, Honduras, Hong Kong, Israel, Japan, Kiribati, Macao, Malaysia, Marshal Islands, Mauritius, Mexico, Micronesia, Moldova, Montenegro, New Zealand, Nicaragua, North Macedonia, Palau, Panama, Paraguay, Peru, Saint Kitts and Nevis, Saint Lucia, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, Samoa, Serbia, Seychelles, Singapore, Solomon Islands, South Korea, Timor-Leste, Tonga, Trinidad and Tobago, Tuvalu, Ukraine, United Arab Emirates, United Kingdom, United States of America, Uruguay and Venezuela.

• Hong Kong and Macao: holders of SAR passports do not need a visa. • Taiwan: holders of passports issued by Taiwan which include an identity card number do not need a visa. • Serbia: holders of biometric passports do not need a visa, excluding holders of passports issued by the Serbian Coordination Directorate. • Nationals from micro-states within an EU country (Andorra, Monaco, San Marino and Vatican City) also do not need a visa.

ETIAS travel authorisation : Starting in mid 2025, all visitors who currently do not need a visa to visit 30 European countries will need to apply for an ETIAS travel authorisation .

Types and Cost

Schengen visa €80 for those who are above 12 years old, €40 for children aged six to 12, and free for children below six.

Nationals from Armenia, Azerbaijan and Russia pay €35.

In addition, the visa fee is waived for the following applicants: • School pupils, students, postgraduate students and accompanying teachers who undertake stays for the purpose of study or educational training. • Researchers from third countries travelling for the purpose of carrying out scientific research. • Representatives of non-profit organisations aged 25 years or less participating in seminars, conferences, sports, cultural or educational events organised by non-profit organisations. • Family members of EU/EEA (European Economic Area) citizens, falling under Directive 2004/38.

Up to 90 days in any 180-day period.

Citizens of some countries need an airport transit visa when transiting through international parts of any airports within the Schengen countries, whereas citizens of certain countries are only required a transit visa for some of the Schengen countries. Temporary residence

EU nationals: Will need to obtain a residence permit if the stay is more than 90 days.

Working days

Schengen visa applications usually take 15 calendar days, but sometimes up to 45 days. Be mindful of the national holidays in Switzerland as they may affect the processing time. It is recommended to submit applications at least four weeks prior to departure.

Sufficient Funds

Schengen visa applicants must be able to provide proof of funds to cover their stay.

Extension of stay

Schengen visa holders with a visa valid for less than 90 days can only extend their visas in exceptional circumstances, such as force majeure or for humanitarian reasons.

Entry with pets

When bringing a pet from another EU country, the animal must have a microchip or tattoo, an EU pet passport and a valid rabies vaccination certificate (the vaccination must have taken place at least 21 days prior to travel). Animals from outside the EU must also have an ISO 11784/11785 compliant 15-digit microchip. Depending on whether your pet is from a high-rabies country or a rabies-controlled country, your pet either has to be vaccinated first or microchipped first. For pets from high-rabies countries, a rabies titer test also has to be administered 30 days after the vaccination. A veterinary certificate issued by an authorised veterinarian is also required when entering Switzerland with a pet from outside of the EU.

Entry, Exit and Visa Requirements

Traveling Through Europe : If you are planning to visit or travel through European countries, you should be familiar with the requirements of the Schengen Agreement. 

• Your passport should be valid for at least three months beyond the period of stay if you plan on transiting a Schengen country review our U.S. Travelers in Europe page.  
• You will need s ufficient proof of funds and a return plane ticket .

The U.S. Department of State is unaware of any HIV/AIDS entry restrictions for visitors or foreign residents in Switzerland.

Safety and Security

Terrorism: Terrorist groups and those inspired by such organizations are intent on attacking U.S. citizens abroad. Terrorists are increasingly using less sophisticated methods of attack – including knives, firearms, and vehicles – to more effectively target crowds. Frequently, their aim is unprotected or vulnerable targets, such as:

• High-profile public events (sporting contests, political rallies, demonstrations, holiday events, celebratory gatherings, etc.)
• Hotels, clubs, and restaurants frequented by tourists
• Places of worship
• Shopping malls and markets
• Public transportation systems (including subways, buses, trains, and scheduled commercial flights)

The local equivalent to the “911” emergency number in Europe, including Switzerland, is “112.” You can also directly dial 144 for medical emergencies, 117 for the police, and 118 for the fire department.

Demonstrations  occur frequently. They may take place in response to political or economic issues, on politically significant holidays, and during international events. 

• Even demonstrations intended to be peaceful can turn confrontational and possibly become violent. 
• Avoid areas around protests and demonstrations. 
• Check local media for updates and traffic advisories.
• Monitor media and local information sources as well as Embassy Bern’s safety and security webpage , and factor updated information into personal travel plans and activities.
• Address specific safety concerns to law enforcement authorities in Switzerland.

Crime: The majority of crimes directed against foreign visitors, including U.S. citizens, involve pick-pocketing, vehicle break-ins, bicycle theft, and other forms of theft.

• Do not leave bags unattended. Most reported thefts occur at crowded tourist sites, at airports, car rental agencies, on public buses, trams and trains, and at the major railway stations.
• Visitors to congested and popular tourist areas (e.g., museums, monuments, train stations, airports, and subways) should be particularly attentive to their surroundings.
• Be alert to criminal schemes. Organized groups of pick-pockets operate at major tourist sites and when conferences, festivals, shows, or exhibitions occur. Thieves frequently work in pairs. For example, one member of the pair creates a disturbance while the other steals your belongings.
• While the incidence of sexual assault is statistically low, attacks do occur. See our travel tips for Women Travelers .
• In many countries around the world, counterfeit and pirated goods are widely available. Transactions involving such products may be illegal under local law. In addition, bringing them back to the United States may result in forfeitures and/or fines.

Victims of Crime: Report crimes to the local police at 117, and contact the U.S. Embassy at +41 31 357-7011. Remember that local authorities are responsible for investigating and prosecuting the crime.

• Contact relatives or friends with your written consent

Alpine hazards: Switzerland is a popular destination for outdoor sports enthusiasts, including skiing, hiking, and mountain climbing. Alpine hazards such as avalanches and snowdrifts, landslides and flooding, glacial crevasses, falling rocks, sun exposure, and sudden weather changes are common year-round. Although safety standards are excellent, visitors need to be aware that public safety warnings are not comparable to those found in the United States. While hiking paths and ski slopes are clearly marked, not all possibly hazardous situations will have clear warning signs. People are expected to use common sense and caution when enjoying the outdoors.

People should:

• Stay on designated paths or slopes
• Follow the advice given by local authorities and guides
• Take note of weather forecasts and conditions
• Be in a team of two when participating in mountain activities
• Inform someone of your plans and anticipated time of return

Mountain rescues can be extremely expensive and we recommend that you have sufficient insurance coverage that includes coverage for mountain search and rescue. The non-profit foundation Swiss Air Rescue Organization (REGA) offers a membership that waives the costs of rescue missions; many Swiss citizens are members and U.S. citizens are able to join as well. 

Domestic Violence: U.S. citizen victims of domestic violence may contact the Embassy for assistance. Local organizations offer counseling and assistance for victims of crime .

Tourism: The tourism industry is generally regulated and rules with regard to best practices and safety inspections are regularly enforced. Hazardous areas/activities are identified with appropriate signage and professional staff is typically on hand in support of organized activities. In the event of an injury, appropriate medical treatment is widely available throughout the country. Outside of a major metropolitan center, it may take more time for first responders and medical professionals to stabilize a patient and provide life-saving assistance. U.S. citizens are encouraged to purchase medical evacuation insurance . 

Local Laws & Special Circumstances

Criminal Penalties: You are subject to local laws. If you violate local laws, even unknowingly, you may be expelled, arrested, or imprisoned. Individuals establishing a business or practicing a profession that requires additional permits or licensing should seek information from the competent local authorities, prior to practicing or operating a business.

Arrest Notification: If you are arrested or detained, ask police or prison officials to notify the U.S. Embassy immediately. See our webpage for further information.     

Swiss Banking : Most major credit cards are widely accepted, but many vendors will only accept chip-and-PIN cards. ATMs are widely available and accept U.S. debit cards. Numerous banks do not accept U.S. citizens as clients. Please see the Embassy’s website for more information on banking in Switzerland.

Travelers Who Require Accessibility Assistance: While in Switzerland, individuals with disabilities may find accessibility and accommodation very different from what you find in the United States. Many sidewalks are narrow and uneven, and cobblestone streets can make access difficult, but most major tourist areas have better facilities. Medical care is comparable to that found in the United States. Ambulance services are widely available.

The U.S. government does not pay medical bills. Be aware that U.S. Medicare does not apply overseas. Swiss medical facilities and care providers will ask for you to settle your bills onsite and you will have to claim a refund with your insurer later. It is common for hospitals to ask for a deposit to ensure medical costs will be covered.

Medical Insurance: Make sure your health insurance plan provides coverage overseas. Most care providers overseas only accept cash payments. Mental Health Resources : Under local law assisted suicide is legal in Switzerland, and several known organizations facilitate assisted suicide to consenting adults. If you or someone you know is experiencing a mental health crisis, help is available and is free and anonymous. For those in the United States, please contact the National Suicide Prevention Hotline by dialing 988 from a phone in the United States.  For those in Switzerland, please contact Die Dargebotene Hand (The Helping Hand), a service aimed at adults, by dialing 143 from a phone in Switzerland (assistance is available in English, German, French, and Italian); or Pro Joventute (For the Children), a service aimed at youth, by dialing 147 from a phone in Switzerland (assistance available in German, French, and Italian). 

Medications: Over-the-counter medicine is available at pharmacies and a pharmacist is on call 24/7. Information regarding the pharmacy and pharmacist on duty in your area can be obtained over the medical emergency telephone line by dialing 144. If traveling with prescription medication, check with the Swiss Federal Customs Administration to ensure the medication is legal in Switzerland. Always carry your prescription medication in original packaging with your doctor’s prescription.

Vaccinations: Be up-to-date on all  vaccinations recommended  by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Travel and Transportation

Road Conditions and Traffic Safety: Road conditions are generally excellent, but traffic, engineering, and driving habits pose special dangers.

• Lane markings and sign placements may differ from those in the United States. Drivers should be prepared to make last-minute maneuvers and stops.
• Be aware that pedestrians, bikers, and trams generally have the right-of-way.
• In alpine areas roads may become dangerous due to snowfall, ice, or avalanches. Some mountain roads may close for extended periods.
• In some mountain areas, vehicle snow chains are required in the winter.
• Roundabouts are very common in Switzerland.
• The maximum speed limit on motorways is 120 km/h, on expressways it is 100 km/h, on roads outside urban areas it is 80 km/h, and in urban areas it is 50 km/h. Neighborhoods are typically 30 km/h.

Accidents: In the event of a traffic accident, call the police immediately at 117. Call 118 for the fire department and 144 for medical/ambulance services. 144 functions as the equivalent to the “911” emergency number in the United States.

Toll roads: If you plan to drive on motorways in Switzerland you must purchase a toll sticker (vignette), which must be affixed to the car’s windshield. These are available online, at gas stations, and at border crossings. Rental cars usually have a vignette already; be sure to check with your car rental agency. Failure to comply with traffic rules can result in large fines. For more information visist the website of the Swiss Federal Customs Administration .

Traffic Laws and Fines: While driving in Switzerland you are subject to local traffic laws.

• The minimum age to operate a motor vehicle in Switzerland is 18.
• The maximum allowable blood-alcohol content in the Switzerland is 0.05 percent (0.5 per mille).
• All vehicles are required to travel with their headlights on at all times.
• Use of cellular devices for talking or texting while driving is prohibited.
• Right-of-way rules differ from those in the United States. Unless specifically indicated otherwise, drivers entering intersections from the right have priority over those on the left, even when entering relatively large boulevards from small side streets.
• Turning right on red is illegal.
• Speeding fines vary between 20 and 300 Swiss Francs. If you exceed the speed limit significantly or engage in reckless driving the traffic violation can be referred to the public prosecutor. Public prosecutors commonly impose monetary deposit/bail on foreign visitors, which can be over 1,000 Swiss Francs. Please note that a traffic violation that is referred to the prosecutor will incur significant cost in addition to the actual fine.

Driving in Switzerland: You may drive in Switzerland with your valid U.S. license for up to one year after your arrival; then you must obtain a Swiss permit. Swiss licenses are only issued on the basis of valid U.S. licenses. Holders of expired U.S. licenses must take the Swiss driving test when applying for a Swiss license. The minimum age for driving or learning to drive is 18. Liability insurance on motor vehicles is compulsory in Switzerland and must be provided by a Swiss insurance company.

Public Transportation: Public transport in Switzerland is excellent, punctual, and safe. The websites of the Swiss Federal Railways (SBB) and the Swiss National Tourist Office are the best places to obtain information on fares and timetables.

• Travelers must purchase train, bus or tram tickets and   validate them by punching them in validating machines  prior  to boarding  (machines can be found near the entrance of train stations or tram and bus stops). Tickets cannot be bought on the train, bus, or tram. Failure to follow this procedure may result in an  on-the-spot fine  by an inspector. If the violator does not pay the fine on the spot, it will automatically double.
• Be aware of pick-pockets and do not leave bags unattended. Most reported thefts occur on public buses, trams and trains, and at the major railway stations.

Switzerland passport ranking.

The Swiss passport is currently ranked 5th place on the Guide Passport Index. It provides visa-free access to 191 countries. It is considered one of the most desirable passports in the world with a very high mobility score. Swiss passport holders have visa-free access and visas on arrival to destinations such as Brazil, Japan, United Kingdom, United Arab Emirates, United States and the entire European Union allowing almost instant travel worldwide. Swiss passport holders do however require a visa to enter about 38 destinations in the world. Some countries where a visa is required are China, India and Russia.

Switzerland Passport Ranking

The Switzerland passport ranking relative to other global passports is calculated by adding up the number of countries that allow Switzerland passport holders to enter without a visa (i.e. visa-free countries) and those that allow Switzerland passport holders to enter by obtaining a visa on arrival (i.e. visa-on-arrival countries) or an electronic travel authorization (eTA). There are currently a total of 144 Switzerland passport visa-free countries, 33 Switzerland visa-on-arrival countries, and 14 eTA destinations.

Altogether, Switzerland passport holders can enter a total of 191 destinations—either without a visa, through a visa on arrival, or via an eTA. As a result, the Switzerland passport ranks 5 in the world.

Separate from these Switzerland visa-free countries and visa-on-arrival countries, there are 38 additional destinations which Switzerland passport holders either need a physical visa to enter or an eVisa (i.e. visa required countries).

About Switzerland

The landlocked Swiss Confederation consists of 26 cantons and is located in Central Europe. The nation’s neighboring countries are Italy, Germany, France and Austria. The most important provinces are Zürich, Bern and Vaud. Switzerland has a surface area of 41,285 square kilometers. It is therefore one of the smaller countries in Europe. Its climate is generally temperate but alpine in the mountainous regions. Its terrain is characterized by mostly mountains with a central plateau.

The overall population is over 8.5 million people. The capital of the country is Bern. The most populous city with more than 415,000 inhabitants is however Zürich. Other important cities are Geneva, Lausanne, Bern, Lucerne and Basel. The largest airport is Zurich Airport (ZRH) with 31 million passengers per year followed by Geneva Airport with 17 million yearly passengers. ZRH airport is the 15th largest airport in Europe and provides access to all parts of the world.

Swiss culture is rich of history and heritage, with Christianity as the main religion. The official languages in the country are German, French, Italian and Romansh. The legal system is the civil law with the judicial review of any legislation. The government type is a federal republic. The elected chief of state and head of government is currently President of the Swiss Confederation Simonetta Sommaruga.

The official currency of the country is the Swiss Franc (CHF) with the current exchange rate being CHF 0.9 to the USD. The country has an open economy, generating a GDP of approximately $584 billion, making it the 38th largest economy in the world. Its citizens have a per capita income of $67,557. The GDP is mostly made up of services and the industry sector. Its main goods of export are machinery, chemicals, watches, textiles and precision instruments. Other very important GDP contributors are the banking and tourism sector.

Switzerland is filled with a variety of urban, cultural and natural tourism destinations and attractions. It is especially known for its rich culture and beautiful mountains, attracting tourists during winter and summer. It has 12 UNESCO world heritage sites. Some of the major destinations include the Matterhorn, Interlaken, Lucerne, Lake Geneva, the Chateau de Chillon, the capital Bern and the Swiss National Park. The nation has a total of approximately 20 million tourists visiting every year. The majority of tourists are originating from Germany, the United Kingdom and the United States.

Entry regulations worldwide

Find out about the current entry regulations* for your destination in good time. This way, you will have enough time to ensure that your travel documents comply with the entry regulations for your destination, or to apply for the necessary visa or travel authorisation. It is your responsibility to get this information and to bring the required documents with you.

All passengers have the option of contacting the embassy or consulate of their destination country with regard to entry regulations.

Please note that the airline decides whether you are approved for the flight, irrespective of whether you need an airport transit visa or not. This also applies if you possess all the necessary documents for your trip.

Identity papers and visas

It is essential you familiarise yourself about the requirements for identity documents and the visa regulations for your destination. Your tour operator or the embassy of the country concerned will provide you with information. When you receive a visa, do check whether it is valid for the entire duration of your stay. Different regulations in terms of entry and customs apply to pets, vehicles or cultural items, depending on the country.

Children travelling

If a child is travelling alone or with only one parent, in many cases they will need a travel permit from the parents or the parent that is not present. Authorities can refuse entry or departure without this document. Sometimes, the airline will also be subject to a fine. SWISS reserves the right to pass on any such fines to the party responsible.

Airlines are obliged to send additional passenger data to external authorities. Passenger data is sent via the Advanced Passenger Information System (APIS) on the date of departure. Providing complete and correct information will save you any inconvenience at your destination airport. Send your data online on swiss.com no later than 72 hours before departure. If that is not possible, this will be recorded at the check-in machine or when you check in at the desk.

Flights over foreign territory

Authorities in some countries, such as the USA and Russia, for example, also require that passenger data is sent for flights that cross their territory.

Important information for travellers

The Brazilian National Council of Justice (CNJ) requires a declaration of consent signed by both parents if a child is travelling unaccompanied or is travelling accompanied by only one parent or another adult. This regulation only applies to Brazilian citizens. Detailed information is available on the ​CNJ website.

UK citizens

Entry:  UK citizens do not require an entry visa for Switzerland for either short stays (up to 90 days in any 180-day period in the whole Schengen Area) or for long stays (over 90 days). For information on the  validity of travel documents of third-country nationals  (non EU/EFTA citizens) see Question 3.14 in the Frequently Asked Questions on Entry.

Residence, study and work:  All enquiries about obtaining a permit for living, studying and working in Switzerland must be addressed directly to the responsible  cantonal immigration and labour market authorities . See also the  Frequently Asked Questions for UK citizens .

British Travel Document holders

Holders of British Travel Documents blue and red cover (Convention of 28 July 1951 and Convention of 28 September 1954)   do not need a visa for short stays in Switzerland up to 90 days in any 180-day period. If you are planning on entering the Schengen Area through another Schengen state, you must check the entry requirements for British travel document holders with the respective authorities in that state.

Various regulations apply for entering Switzerland. A basic distinction is made between citizens of the European Union (EU) and European Free Trade Association (EFTA) countries and those of other countries. The State Secretariat for Migration (SEM) is the responsible authority in Switzerland.

Since Switzerland’s adherence to the Schengen and Dublin agreements came into force (12 December 2008), Swiss representations abroad are able to issue certain categories of visa, depending on the length of stay and purpose of the journey in Switzerland. Please select one of the following options.

Schengen visa for a stay of up to 90 days

For persons wishing to enter Switzerland for a short stay of up to 90 days within a 180-day period: for example, in a context of tourism, a visit to relatives or friends, short-term language studies, participating in a conference or in sporting/cultural events, etc.

National visa for a stay of more than 90 days

For persons wishing to enter Switzerland for a stay of more than 90 days within a 180-day period. It is subject to the authorisation of the cantonal migration authority competent for the intended place of residence. For example: long-term student, family reunification, marriage in Switzerland, etc.

Airport transit visa

For citizens of certain countries who need a transit visa even if they are staying in the international transit area of the airport and do not enter the Schengen territory.

Labour / Work permits

Admission of foreign workers to an employer in Switzerland is subject to the authorisation of the competent cantonal authority. The entry visa is granted only when the requested authorisations have been delivered.

Visa Requirements for Swiss Citizens

Visa requirements for Swiss nationals  are the laws in place in other countries around the world that dictate if visitors from Switzerland require an authorization for entry and, if so,  what  type of visa  or  travel authorization  is needed .

The  Swiss passport  is currently ranked by the Henley Passport Index as the 7th strongest in the world in terms of travel freedom. It grants access to  over 180  countries  and  territories  without  applying for a visa  in advance .

Visa requirements for citizens of Switzerland vary depending on the country. Some destinations also have different visas and travel authorizations for  different purposes of visit and lengths of stay .

A number of countries have  online systems  that allow Swiss nationals to complete an application form via the internet in order to obtain either an  electronic visa (eVisa)  or an  electronic travel authorization (ETA) , depending on the destination.

The terms of eVisas and ETAs for Swiss citizens vary from country to country, but typically permit  short visits for the purpose of  tourism . They may additionally permit visit business visits and/or transit.

For long-term stays, or to live and work in the majority of countries, nationals of Switzerland must apply for the relevant visa or permit  at an  embassy  or  consulate .

Over 70 countries  require Swiss passport holders to visit an embassy in order to obtain a visa for any visit,  regardless of purpose or length of stay , including tourist visas for short visits.

Citizens of Switzerland can travel to certain destinations and  obtain a  visa on arrival . However, this can mean  spending a long time standing in line  at the border to apply.

For this reason, it is  strongly recommended to apply online  before the trip if this is a possibility for the destination.

There are a large number of countries that permit Swiss passport holders to  enter  visa-free  for certain periods.

Some countries offer  visa exemption  for  long stays  and even for Swiss nationals who plan to move to and work in these sovereign states.

List of Visa Countries for Swiss Passport Holders

Swiss passport holders require a visa for  around 130 different destinations  around the world.

There are  various  different types of visa  available to citizens of Switzerland. The type required may depend on  the purpose of traveling , such as a tourist visa, business visa, student visa, transit visa, or work visa. Some general visit visas cover multiple purposes.

The terms of visas vary. The  maximum period of time  a Swiss national can stay depends on the destination and type of visa. In some cases,  a single  entry  to the country is permitted, while other states have  multiple-entry visas .

Electronic visas (eVisas)  and  electronic travel authorizations (ETAs)  are available to Swiss nationals in order to visit  around 30 different countries . In many cases, these cover visits for tourism, business, and transit.

Some types of visas and permits, such as residence visas and work visas, can only be obtained at  foreign diplomatic missions , such as embassies.

Swiss nationals are required to obtain a tourist visa or visit visa from an embassy in order to visit  around 75 different countries .

Visas on arrival  are available to Swiss passport holders at the borders of  over 20 countries , although in some cases these are only available at certain airports, seaports, and land border checkpoints.

Electronic Travel Visa Authorization

A number of countries and territories have either an  electronic visa (eVisa)  or an  electronic travel authorization (ETA)  available to Swiss passport holders.

These  online systems  are similar, the main difference being that ETAs are visa waivers.

Both eVisas and ETAs for Swiss citizens feature  simple online application forms  that are straightforward to complete and are processed quickly (typically within a few days). The ability to apply online eliminates the need to go to an embassy to obtain a visa.

In order to obtain an eVisa or ETA, applicants from Switzerland must submit some  basic personal information,  passport  details, and an email address . The approved eVisa or ETA will be sent to this account.

In most cases, eVisas and ETAs are  digitally   linked to the  Swiss passport  registered in the application. Some countries may ask that travelers also bring a printed copy.

An ETA or eVisa for citizens of Switzerland permits a  maximum length of stay  of  between 14 days and 3 months , depending on the destination.

Some eVisas and ETAs grant Swiss nationals a  single entry to the  country , while others permit  multiple entries .

Visa On Arrival

A  visa on arrival for Swiss passport holders  is a visa that can be obtained by completing an application form at the border of the destination country.

Citizens of Switzerland are eligible for a visa on arrival for  over 20 different sovereign  states  and  territories .

Visas on arrival grant Swiss visitors entry to the state or territory and a  maximum stay of between 7 and 90 days , depending on the country. Some destinations have multiple-entry visas on arrival.

This type of visa generally permits visits  for the purpose of  tourism . Visas on arrival for certain locations additionally permit business visits, transit, and, in some cases, other purposes of visit.

Visas on arrival for Swiss nationals may only be available  at some ports of entry to the country , for example at certain airports, seaports, or land border crossing points.

Long lines for  application  forms are common  and it is not unusual to spend some time at border control before being cleared to pass through immigration.

In some countries that offer a visa on arrival for Swiss visitors, it is necessary to pay the visa fee  in cash in the local currency .

Embassy Visa Required

An embassy visa or consular visa for Swiss nationals is a visa that must be obtained from  an overseas diplomatic mission ( embassy  or  consulate )  belonging to the destination country before traveling there.

Embassy visas usually take the form of a  stamp or sticker  in the Swiss traveler’s passport or  a physical  document .

There are various kinds of visa that can be acquired from an embassy. Diplomatic missions are usually the only place that citizens of Switzerland can acquire  residence visas  and  work visas  or  permits  for the majority of other countries.

Depending on the country, applying at an embassy might be the only way to obtain  business  and  study visas .

Around 75 different destinations  require that Swiss passport holders apply at an embassy for  any type or length of visit , including for short-stay tourist visas.

To apply for an embassy visa for some countries, it is necessary to  make an appointment beforehand .

Swiss applicants must complete a form and  provide the required supporting documents , including a valid passport.

Swiss nationals enjoy  visa exemption  for over 130 different countries and territories . A valid passport issued by Switzerland is the only entry requirement for these locations.

The maximum period of time that a citizen of Switzerland can spend in a foreign country visa-free ranges  from 14 days to one (1) year  for the majority of destinations.

In most cases, visa exemption extends to  visits for  tourism , leisure,  transit , and, in some cases,  business . However, for the majority of these destinations, the relevant visas or permits will be required for long-term stays or to move to or work in the country.

Switzerland is a member of the  European Free Trade Association (EFTA)  as well as the  Schengen Area . Due to the shared  policy of freedom of movement  between member states of these organizations, Swiss passport holders can travel to all of these countries visa-free. In addition,  no  visa  is required to live or work  in these locations.

ID cards  may be used for travel within the Schengen Area as an alternative to passports.

What you need to enter the UK

If you’re an eu , european economic area ( eea ) or swiss citizen.

Irish citizens can continue to enter and live in the UK .

EU , EEA and Swiss citizens can travel to the UK for holidays or short trips without needing a visa. In other cases, find out if you need to apply for a visa to enter the UK .

You can cross the UK border using a valid passport which should be valid for the whole time you are in the UK .

EU , EEA and Swiss citizens can continue to use the automatic ePassport gates to pass through the border on arrival.

You cannot use an EU , EEA or Swiss national ID card to enter the UK unless you:

• have settled or pre-settled status under the EU Settlement Scheme , or Jersey, Guernsey or the Isle of Man’s settlement schemes
• have an EU Settlement Scheme family permit , or the equivalent from Jersey, Guernsey or the Isle of Man
• have a frontier worker permit
• are an S2 Healthcare Visitor
• are a Swiss national and have a Service Provider from Switzerland visa

In these cases, you can continue to use your national ID card to enter the UK until at least 31 December 2025.

If you’re waiting for a decision on your application for settled or pre-settled status

You can still use your EEA or Swiss national identity card to enter the UK if all of the following are true:

• you’ve applied for settled or pre-settled status under the EU Settlement Scheme, or Jersey, Guernsey or the Isle of Man’s settlement schemes
• you’ve been issued with confirmation your application is valid
• you’re not applying as a joining family member

Other types of cards

British citizens can continue to use a Gibraltar identity card to travel to the UK .

Irish citizens can continue to use a passport card to travel to the UK .

You must have the correct documents to show at the UK border if you’re travelling to the UK . You cannot use any documents to enter the UK that are not listed here.

If you’re a non- EEA family member of an EU , EEA or Swiss citizen

You need a valid national passport, and one of the following:

• an EU Settlement Scheme family permit
• a UK -issued EEA family permit
• a UK -issued biometric residence card

You cannot use an Article 10 or Article 20 residence card issued by an EEA member state.

If you’re from a non- EEA country

Your passport (and visa if you have one) will be checked at border control. You’ll usually be asked why you’re coming to the UK . You can use the UK / EEA immigration lanes and the automatic ePassport gates if you’re from:

• South Korea
• United States

Travelling from within the Common Travel Area (CTA)

The Common Travel Area (CTA) is made up of the UK , Ireland and the Crown Dependencies (Jersey, Guernsey and the Isle of Man).

Business travel to the UK

If you’re an EU , EEA or Swiss Citizen travelling to the UK for a short business trip, you may not need to apply for a visa.

Under the UK ’s new points-based immigration system , you can continue to visit the UK without applying for a visa. In most cases you can stay for up to 6 months. You may participate in a wide range of activities including business-related activities such as meetings, events and conferences. You may enter the UK multiple times during that period but you may not live in the UK by means of frequent or successive visits.

As a business visitor, you cannot:

• do paid or unpaid work for a UK company or as a self-employed person
• do a work placement or internship
• sell directly to the public or provide goods and services

Commercial goods (merchandise in baggage)

You must tell customs (‘declare’) if you are bringing commercial goods into the UK in your accompanied baggage or small motor vehicle. Commercial goods are things to sell.

You need to make a full customs declaration if you are bringing commercial goods that are any of the following:

• above the total value of £1,500 into Great Britain

China Expanded Its 15-Day Visa-Free Travel Policy to 6 European Countries Including Switzerland

China has decided to expand its 15-day visa-free travel policy to six additional European countries on a trial basis, during the period between March 14 and November 30, 2024. 

On March 7, 2024, China’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced that China will expand its 15-day visa-free entry policy to six additional European countries. These countries include Switzerland, Ireland, Hungary, Austria, Belgium, and Luxembourg.

Between March 14 and November 30, 2024, ordinary passport holders from the mentioned countries can enter China without a visa for purposes such as business, tourism, visiting relatives and friends, and transit.

This move aligns with China’s commitment to facilitating procedures for foreigners to come to China for work, study, and travel, as stated in the 2024 Government Work Report . It is designed to further promote personnel exchanges between China and other countries.

“We hope more countries will also offer Chinese citizens visa facilitation and work with us to build fast-track networks for cross-border travels and encourage speedy resumption of international passenger flights,” Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi told a press conference on the sidelines of the Two Sessions.

Earlier in January 2024, in a meeting between Chinese Premier Li Qiang and Swiss President Viola Amherd, China promised to grant unilateral visa-free access for Swiss citizens and the initiation of an FTA upgrade to strengthen diplomatic ties and economic collaboration between the two nations.

Countries with 15-day visa-free travel to China

In the past, citizens with a valid ordinary passport from Japan, Brunei, and Singapore have been permitted to travel to China for a period of up to 15 days without applying for a visa for tourism, business, visiting relatives and friends, or transiting to a third country. This policy was suspended when COVID-19 restrictions were strictly implemented in China.

On July 26, 2023, the 15-day visa-free travel to China policy was resumed for citizens of Brunei and Singapore, the latter of which has been upgraded to a 30-day visa-free travel since February 2024.

On November 24, 2023, China announced that its 15-day visa-free travel policy was expanded to five European countries and Malaysia. During the period from December 1, 2023, to November 30, 2024, ordinary passport holders from France, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, Spain, and Malaysia may enter China visa-free for business, tourism, visiting relatives and friends, and transit for no more than 15 days.

Then on March 7, 2024, China announced that it will expand its 15-day visa-free entry policy to another six European countries, including Switzerland, Ireland, Hungary, Austria, Belgium, and Luxembourg. During the period from March 14 to November 30, 2024, ordinary passports holders from the above countries can enter China visa-free for business, tourism, visiting relatives and friends, and transit for no more than 15 days.

To note, citizens from these countries would previously also have had to apply for a visa in advance if they:

• Expect to stay in China for more than 15 days; or
• Intend to study, work, settle down, or attend an interview in China.

At the time of writing, it’s still not clear when this policy will be resumed for citizens of Japan. This means citizens from Japan still need to apply for a Chinese tourist, business, or another type of visa to enter China at this time.

Indians can now stay in Switzerland, Amsterdam for up to 2 years like visa-free nationals. Check details

W ith European Union (EU) adopting favourable Schengen visa rules for Indians, the strength of Indian passport is arguably set to grow with travel to 29 European countries getting seamless and hassle-free. 

Incidentally, Indian passport is currently ranked at 85 , as per Henley Passport Index for 2024 that ranks 199 nations based on the strength of their passports. Our neigbouring country Pakistan is ranked at 106, while Bangladesh at 102.

Under the new Schengen visa regime , Indians will now be able to enter any of these European countries multiple times for two years, which is further extendable by 5 years, and stay there like a visa-free national.  

This is a stark departure from the current practice. Until now, when Indians intend to travel to one or more European countries, they are meant to apply for the much sought-after Schengen visa, which is given for a maximum of three months.

But now, under the cascade regime -- guess what? You can stay in Switzerland, Amsterdam, and/ or any other European countries such as Austria, Hungary, Poland, Belgium, Germany, France, among others, for as long as five years without any hiccups. 

According to a report in Aug 2023, Scandinavian region in Europe saw a substantial growth of 140 percent as of August 2023 in comparison to pre-COVID levels in 2020, according to insights from MakeMyTrip.

How will this work?

This is primarily beneficial for those Indians who frequently travel to one or more of European countries. And if you have travelled to Europe on a Schengen visa for two times in the past three years, then you are eligible for this new visa category ‘cascade regime’ under which you will be given two-year multi entry visa and you can travel and stay in any of these countries just like an individual who does not require a visa to be there. 

But the only catch is that you won’t be allowed to work and earn there like a local citizen.

This two-year visa will then be followed by a five-year visa so long as the passport has sufficient validity. For example, if the passport is set to expire three years later, then the visa seeker won’t be able to get the Schengen visa extended by five years. 

"The two-year visa will normally be followed by a five-year visa, if the passport has sufficient validity remaining. During the validity period of these visas, holders enjoy travel rights equivalent to visa-free nationals," reads the statement shared by Herve Delphin, Ambassador, Delegation of European Union to India on ‘X’ Platform. 

5-year post-study visa in France 

This Schengen move is testimony to growing partnership between Europe and India. Last year, France also eased its visa rules for inbound Indian students. 

When Prime Minister Narendra Modi visited France in July 2023, the European nation had extended five-year post-study visa to Indian students who had completed their master's degree there. 

Earlier, Indians were given two-year work visa after completing their master's degree.

A US green card is a pathway to a US passport. While you wait for your US passport, your US green card is already making your current passport strong . Not as strong as a US passport but quite strong. You already have visa-free access to 48 additional countries.

Why are there VISA-FREE countries for US green card holders?

US passport (and US citizenship) is considered one of the strongest in the world. A US green card is a pathway to US citizenship. Many countries believe that someone with a US green card will not jeopardize their chances of becoming a US citizen by remaining illegally in another country. 

Working towards acquiring a US green card requires remaining several years in the US or investing enormous amounts of cash or building very strong family ties with the US. It’s silly for someone to let go of years of valuable time and millions of dollars of investments just to stay illegally in another country. Therefore, countries trust US green card holders as genuine travelers and treat them almost like someone with a strong passport. So, these countries offer visa-free access to US green card holders. 

How many countries can you visit with a US green card?

As of 2024, there are 48 countries and territories that you can visit with a US green card. This list of countries for US green card holders includes visa-free, visa on arrival and e-visa countries. Japan is the new addition to the list with the option to apply for e-visa without needing to go to the embassy.

What Is Schengen Visa

The Schengen area comprises 25 countries out of the 27 EU countries except the Republic of Ireland and Cyprus. It includes countries such as Belgium, France, Germany, Italy, and Spain, along with Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway, and Switzerland. This extensive area not only offers diverse cultural experiences but also facilitates seamless travel across borders for visa holders.

A Schengen visa permits a brief stay of up to 90 days within a 180-day timeframe. This visa may be issued as either a single-entry, enabling one entry into the Schengen area, or a multiple-entry, allowing multiple visits for the duration of its validity.

How The New Rules Affect Indians

Under the new regulations, Indian travellers can now obtain a two-year Schengen visa, a marked improvement from the shorter validity periods previously available. To qualify for this extended two-year visa, applicants must have acquired and appropriately utilised two Schengen visas within the preceding three years. Upon successful utilisation of the two-year visa, travellers can typically expect to be eligible for a five-year Schengen visa, provided their passport maintains sufficient validity.

The new rules essentially say that Indian travellers can move freely within the Schengen member countries for short stays, typically up to 90 days within any 180-day period, without the need for additional permits or authorisations. Under this system, eligible travellers with a proven track record of travel will have simplified access to visas with extended validity, provided their passport's validity permits.

The 'Cascade' system, as it's termed, is designed to reward frequent travellers with progressively longer visa durations. It begins with a two-year visa, and upon successful use, travellers can potentially qualify for a five-year visa. While these visas do not restrict the purpose of travel, they do not allow the right to work within the Schengen area.

Destinations value Indian travelers, but lengthy visa processing times lasting months act as significant deterrents. The adoption of these new regulations by European authorities reflects a proactive effort to tackle these concerns, aiming to boost tourism flow.

The European Commission has introduced a new visa “cascade” regime for Indian nationals applying for Schengen visas in India. This regime looks to offer longer-term, multi-entry Schengen visas, based on the applicant’s travel history.

Indian travel agents had been complaining of Schengen visa delays as a major challenge to the summer travel rush from India.

• How does one qualify for the longer duration visas?

The European Commission can issue a two-year multiple-entry visa after a traveler “has obtained and lawfully used two visas within the previous three years.” This demonstrates a positive travel history and compliance with previous visa regulations.

Subsequently, after granting the two-year visa, authorities may issue a five-year visa if the passport has has adequate validity remaining.

• What benefits do holders of these extended visas enjoy?

During the validity period of these visas, holders can enjoy travel rights equivalent to visa-free nationals within the Schengen area, allowing for short stays of up to 90 days within a 180-day period.

• Which countries are part of the Schengen area?

The Schengen area comprises 29 European countries, including 25 European Union member states: Belgium, Bulgaria, Croatia, Czech Republic, Denmark, Germany, Estonia, Greece, Spain, France, Italy, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Hungary, Malta, Netherlands, Austria, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Slovenia, Slovakia, Finland, and Sweden. Additionally, Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway, and Switzerland are also part of the Schengen area.

• Are there any restrictions or conditions to these visas?

Schengen visas do not grant the right to work within the Schengen area and are for short stays only. Additionally, the visas are not purpose-bound, providing flexibility for travel within the specified period.

Skift also spoke to players in the Indian outbound travel industry to understand what has changed in the new Schengen visa rules.

• How is this different from the earlier visas that Schengen countries offered? Don’t they already offer multi-entry visas with longer duration to Indians?

Mahendra Vakharia, managing director of Pathfinders Holidays, said there was no standard policy of Schengen states for issuing these long-term visas earlier. Switzerland, France, Netherlands, Italy and Spain usually issued long-term visa, but it was all subjective. “With this new policy it should be a standard rule now,” Vakharia said.

• Travelers mainly complain of longer processing times, has that changed?

Here too, there is no standard processing time as it varies from country to country, according to Vakharia. “France and Spain have been processing visas within four days, and then there’s Croatia, which takes 60 days,” he said.

Processing time will not change as of now, it will take time for the visa rules to be enforced, said an industry source, while highlighting that the visa would be especially useful for corporate travelers.

What Promoted The Move?

Speaking on the possible motivations, Vakharia acknowledged various reasons, including administrative capacity constraints at embassies to cater to the huge inflow of applications.

“As there is an overwhelming demand from Indian travelers, the process of securing visa appointments has posed significant challenges , especially for travelers residing in cities lacking VFS Global centers,” he said.

The European Commission said in an statement that the decision reflects the EU-India Common Agenda on Migration and Mobility, aimed at fostering comprehensive cooperation on migration policy. Facilitating people-to-people contacts is a key aspect of this agenda, acknowledging India’s importance as an EU partner.

The decision also reflects a realization of the strong economic benefits derived through the spending power of Indian tourists. As Vakharia aptly puts it, “Why let go of the Golden Indian Goodie Bag?”

What is the Schengen visa “cascade” regime for Indian passport holders?

As per the recently implemented visa "cascade" policy for India, citizens of India are eligible to receive long-term, multiple-entry Schengen visas that are valid for two years, provided they have legally secured and utilised two visas in the preceding three years. If there is still enough validity on the passport, the two-year visa will usually be followed by a five-year visa. The validity period of these visas allows their holders to travel with the same freedoms as citizens of other countries.

This decision is made within the framework of enhanced relations under the EU-India Common Agenda on Migration and Mobility, which aims to achieve comprehensive cooperation between the EU and India on migration policy. Given the significance of India as an EU partner, one important aspect of this cooperation is the facilitation of people-to-people contacts. 

How to apply for a multi-year Schengen visa?

• According to the India Today report, if you have applied for and been granted two Schengen visas in the last three years, you are eligible to apply for a two-year multiple-entry visa.
• If your passport's validity permits, a five-year visa will then be issued in place of this two-year one.
• You have the same travel privileges as citizens of countries without a visa to enter the region as long as your Schengen visa is valid.

With a valid Schengen visa, an individual can visit any part of the Schengen region without restriction for up to 90 days out of 180 days. Although the visas have no specific purpose, they do not give the ability to work. The Schengen area consists of 29 European countries (of which 25 are EU states): Belgium, Bulgaria, Croatia, Czech Republic, Denmark, Germany, Estonia, Greece, Spain, France, Italy, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Hungary, Malta, Netherlands, Austria, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Slovenia, Slovakia, Finland and Sweden, along with Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway and Switzerland.
