2023 Tata Safari review - a new chapter in Tata's SUV evolution

Tata Motors has been making significant strides in reshaping its SUV lineup. They recently introduced thoroughly refreshed models of the Nexon and Nexon EV, and the eagerly-anticipated Punch EV seems to be just around the corner. What is creating headlines of them at the moment though is the flagship Safari and its 5-seater counterpart, the Harrier - both of which have been updated significantly. We have a detailed review of the Harrier , too, but now we delve into the new 2023 Tata Safari 's most striking features, starting with its design.

tata safari 2023 review quora

The 2023 Tata Safari introduces a range of exciting design updates. Most notably, a large grille with a single-piece design sets it apart from the Harrier, giving it an imposing stance. Subtle 'Safari' branding on the doors with an updated logo adds a touch of class to the SUV.

One design element that particularly caught our eye is the stunning 19-inch wheels. Their two-tone finish and intricate hexagon centre design not only look fantastic but also injects a sporty element into the overall design. Regrettably, these wheels are not transferrable to the older Hexa, but they can be retrofitted on both old and new Harrier models.

tata safari 2023 review quora

The straight lines on the bodywork emphasise the Safari's upright stance and length, clearly distinguishing it from the Harrier. Even the grille protrudes forward a bit more, adding to its upright fascia. The tie-pin-like Safari badging in the headlights adds a touch of sophistication.

tata safari 2023 review quora

The front end is dominated by a full-width LED strip, vertically stacked headlamps, and two-pot fog lamps, creating a commanding presence. The startup animation for the headlights and taillights further enhances the premium appeal. Moving to the rear, the design strikes a perfect balance between sophistication and ruggedness, with horizontal lines and vertical sculptural elements. Notably, there's a distinctive light signature that sets it apart from the Harrier.

One standout feature is the use of hot foiling technology in the grille, a first in the segment, which adds an extra layer of sophistication and establishes a stronger visual connection with the Land Rovers.

tata safari 2023 review quora

Stepping inside the 2023 Tata Safari, you'll be further impressed. The cabin retains its spaciousness, but now, there are pinstripes in the inlay panels, reminiscent of luxury cars. While these pinstripes provide a nice touch, it's worth noting that they are printed and not actual metal veins.

tata safari 2023 review quora

The cabin is loaded with screens, featuring a 12.3-inch central infotainment screen, a 10.25-inch instrument cluster, and even a tiny screen for the terrain mode selector, akin to a smartwatch. These screens are controlled by a new standalone processing unit, ensuring smooth performance and a more intuitive user interface. Soft-touch materials throughout the cabin add to the premium feel. Electronic touch controls for the air conditioning and a four-spoke phygital steering wheel with an illuminated logo make it clear that this is a high-tech cockpit, though some switches and plastic touchpoints in less common areas still feel somewhat basic.

tata safari 2023 review quora

However, there are a few downsides to consider. Glossy surfaces in the cabin are visually appealing but prone to scratches. Some of the controls, like the stalks behind the wheel, can be a bit of a reach, which might be inconvenient while driving. In the instrumentation, there's no MAP view for Google Maps on Apple CarPlay, only Apple Maps. The suede panels around the windows tend to accumulate dust, and the large wing mirrors create wind noise and affect cornering visibility. The shift-by-wire gear selector in the automatic variant, while a step forward, could be smoother. These are personal nitpicks and may vary from one person to another.

tata safari 2023 review quora

Tata has placed a strong emphasis on safety, offering six standard airbags, with a seventh available in top trims. The inclusion of features like 'Boss Mode' for the rear left passenger adds convenience, and various exterior and interior trim combinations known as Personas allow for a somewhat personalised experience while making colour and upholstery choices.

tata safari 2023 review quora

The lighter upholstery option may soil easily, so keep that in mind. On the tech front, the integration of Alexa Car2Home is a welcome addition. If you have compatible Alexa devices at home, you can use voice commands to control various home functions, adding convenience to your daily routine - like starting the coffee machine, switching the home lights or air conditioning etc as you are arriving home.

tata safari 2023 review quora

Connectivity is a strong suit then, and you also get voice-controlled dual-zone automatic climate control. However, it's worth noting that there are no individual microphones to detect driver and passenger commands, so you'll need to specify whom you're addressing. Rear window blinds and ventilated seats in the second row create a comfortable atmosphere. Ambient lighting extends to the panoramic roof too, which can be opened using voice commands, offering a convenient experience much like the competition. Additionally, the JBL audio system is upgraded with a tenth speaker placed on the dashboard. There are 13 audio modes, including one that activates only the front speakers, perfect for keeping the rear passengers undisturbed.

tata safari 2023 review quora

Driving Dynamics

In terms of driving dynamics, too, the 2023 Tata Safari has made some strides. New driving modes affect the weight of the Electronic Power Steering, addressing past concerns about the heavy steering feel with the hydraulic setup. Sport mode continues to provide the weighted feel, while Comfort or Eco modes make the steering significantly lighter and more convenient for daily chores.

tata safari 2023 review quora

The Sport mode enhances throttle and engine response too, making it especially useful on mountain roads and inclines, even for non-enthusiasts. The introduction of three terrain modes - Normal, Wet, and Rough - allows for adaptability in various driving conditions. Although the Safari is front-wheel drive and lacks all-wheel-drive options, the tire choices and suspension setup mitigate the need for frequent traction control interventions. Most mild off-road trails can be tackled in Normal mode itself.

tata safari 2023 review quora

The safety features are well-rounded, including ADAS (Advanced Driver Assistance Systems), and the addition of Adaptive Cruise Control that adjusts speed to match the vehicle in front, with a 3-second acceleration delay built in to anticipate unexpected obstacles. In panic situations, the vehicle uses automatic emergency braking and includes features such as pre-brake fill. Even in non-emergency braking, the Safari activates hazard lights when the rear radars detect a tailgating vehicle. Some features like Lane Keep Assist, are expected to be added to the production model.

Powertrain Performance

As before, the Safari continues to use the Fiat-sourced 170PS diesel engine, which is inherently a bit noisy and unrefined, but there are no pedal vibrations to complain about. It delivers a decent performance with a punchy midrange. There's some turbo-lag, but it's manageable and the crisp response of the Sport mode shadows that shortcoming.

tata safari 2023 review quora

The Hyundai-sourced automatic transmission now comes with a shift-by-wire as mentioned and you also get paddle shifters, marginally improving the driving experience. It's not the quickest, but the shift times are respectable.

Aerodynamic efficiency is improved in the updated exterior design, with wind curtains near the headlights contributing to slight gains in overall fuel economy, but we will verify that later with a road test.

tata safari 2023 review quora

Suspension tweaks ensure that ride quality remains excellent despite the large wheels. The handling is quite good too for such a large car and the aforementioned Electronic Power Steering helps shrink the perception of the car's size.

In conclusion, the 2023 Tata Safari is a compelling SUV. With its refreshed design, impressive features, and a strong safety package, it marks a significant step forward for Tata Motors. While the front-wheel-drive configuration and the absence of an all-wheel-drive option may not cater to Safari purists, the new Safari distinguishes itself with its rich feature set, connectivity options, and striking design, tailored to meet market demands.

The 2023 Tata Safari Facelift: A Revamped Icon with Enhanced Features

The mere mention of the Tata Safari evokes images of a powerful, imposing SUV. For an entire generation, the term ‘SUV’ was synonymous with Tata’s iconic Safari, a mainstay in the hearts of automobile enthusiasts for over two decades. Alongside the Sierra and Sumo models, the Safari stood as the foundation of the brand, captivating the nation as India’s inaugural domestically produced 4WD SUV in 1998. Its daring design, off-road prowess, and seamless ride quality endeared it to the masses. The Safari wasn’t just a vehicle; it became a symbol of aspiration for India’s burgeoning middle class in the 90s and early 2000s, outshining the hatchbacks of its era and drawing the admiration of the influential and powerful.

tata safari 2023 review quora

Recognizing the need for a transformation, Tata Motors embarked on a formidable challenge four years ago: to craft a second-generation Safari that upheld its legendary status while embracing contemporary features and advanced capabilities. As new contenders like the Mahindra XUV700, Toyota Innova HyCross, Kia Carens, and Hyundai Alcazar entered the scene, the Safari, relatively unchanged since its inception, began to display signs of ageing. This ambitious endeavour has culminated in the unveiling of the 2023 Tata Safari facelift.

Today, we stand on the brink of testing this eagerly anticipated version, brimming with excitement and anticipation for the new chapter it promises in the Safari’s enduring legacy.

Exterior Upgrades Both the Safari and Harrier facelifts have received refreshed exteriors, each with unique features differentiating them. The Safari boasts body-coloured inserts in its larger parametric grille and a brushed silver lip on the lower front bumper. In contrast, the Harrier’s grille and lips are entirely black, exuding a youthful vibe. While the body-coloured grille inserts on the Safari revealed signs of chipping, these issues are expected to be resolved in future iterations.

tata safari 2023 review quora

Both SUVs share similarities, including the full-width LED light bar connecting the DRLs and vertically stacked LED headlights. The Safari’s headlights feature a chrome inlay and ‘Safari’ badging, enhancing its distinct identity. Additionally, air vents under the headlight pods aid in aerodynamics and brake cooling. The new Safari offers 19-inch alloy wheels on its top-end trims, a design inspired by the Sierra concept, emphasizing Tata’s commitment to aesthetics and functionality.

tata safari 2023 review quora

In profile, the SUV proudly displays ‘Safari’ badging on the front doors and features chrome door handles and window trims. The rear showcases a full-width LED light bar connecting wraparound taillights and a brushed silver skid plate, completing the sophisticated look.

Interior and Tech The 2023 Safari facelift marks a significant leap in interior and technological features. The previous Safari Red Dark edition introduced Tata’s new 13.2-inch infotainment system, replacing the outdated, smaller touchscreen of the earlier model. The new system, highly responsive and intuitive, enhances the overall driving experience.

tata safari 2023 review quora

The dashboard hosts a new capacitive touch panel controlling air-con settings, fog lights, the electric tailgate, and the 360-degree camera system. A 10.25-inch digital instrument cluster, displaying comprehensive information, including Google Maps, further amplifies the interior’s technological prowess. Tata’s new four-spoke digital steering wheel, featuring an illuminated Tata logo and touch buttons for adaptive cruise and audio volume control, adds a touch of sophistication. Automatic transmission variants come with paddle shifters, although their quality and functionality require refinement.

tata safari 2023 review quora

The interior offers a wireless charger, a 45W Type-C USB port for fast charging, a panoramic sunroof with mood lighting, a six-way electric driver’s seat, a four-way electric front passenger seat, front seat coolers, and configurable mood lighting. The Safari also incorporates front and rear parking sensors, 360-degree cameras, automated headlights, rain-sensing wipers, and an electric tailboard with gesture control.

tata safari 2023 review quora

For the second row, Tata provides ultra-comfortable captain seats with ventilation, creating a luxurious six-seater configuration. The rear headrests feature movable extensions for added comfort during naps. The third row, while equipped with USB ports and bespoke AC controls, is better suited for children and short adults due to limited knee room and under-thigh support.

Steering and Driving Dynamics The most significant mechanical change in the new Safari is the introduction of the Electric Power Assisted Steering (EPAS) system, revolutionizing its driving dynamics. Unlike the previous hydraulic unit, the EPAS system offers a consistent and direct feel, eliminating steering kickbacks and enhancing the driving experience both in city traffic and on highways. Although lacking the nuanced feedback of a hydraulic system, the EPAS system offers precision, allowing for precise vehicle placement.

tata safari 2023 review quora

Despite its larger size and weight, the Safari manoeuvres corners effortlessly, thanks to the EPAS system. While some body roll is present, it is expertly controlled. The 245-section tires provide exceptional grip, enabling the Safari to handle corners with surprising agility for an SUV of its size.

Powertrain The 2023 Safari retains its tried and tested, FCA-sourced 2-litre turbo-diesel engine, producing 168bhp and 350Nm. This robust engine effortlessly handles the Safari’s weight, providing ample low-end and mid-range power for effortless overtakes, even with a full load. The diesel engine’s refinement is noteworthy, with minimal vibrations reaching the cabin or the steering wheel.

tata safari 2023 review quora

Transmission options include a six-speed manual or a six-speed torque converter automatic, the latter being the choice for our test drive. Tata Motors has introduced paddle shifters with this gearbox, although their functionality leaves much to be desired. Limited to the ‘Sport’ mode, these paddles do not provide full control over the gearbox, restricting downshifts below certain RPMs and refusing upshifts at the redline. This inconsistency undermines the purpose of having paddle shifters, impacting both performance and efficiency.

tata safari 2023 review quora

Verdict The 2023 Tata Safari facelift builds upon the strengths of its predecessor, introducing several enhancements. While it maintains exceptional comfort, robust build, and off-road prowess, there are areas, such as finishing details and the quality of certain components, that require attention.

tata safari 2023 review quora

Tata Motors is expected to adhere to its aggressive pricing strategy with the Safari facelift, offering excellent value for money. Although a slight premium can be anticipated over the previous model, Safari’s competitive pricing will continue to make it an attractive choice in the market. The official prices for the Tata Harrier and Tata Safari facelifts will be unveiled on October 17, 2023.

2023 Tata Safari Review: Is This Tata's Best Flagship Yet?

Pratik Rakshit

Tata Motors has gone all out to give the Safari SUV a jaw-dropping makeover. But, is that enough?

Tata Motors has pulled out all the stops to revamp its flagship SUV, the Tata Safari. Following the trend of refreshing other SUVs in their lineup, Tata has gone all out in giving the Safari a jaw-dropping makeover. And the result, is nothing short of awe-inspiring, leaving enthusiasts and onlookers alike smitten with its all-new look. But, is that enough? We find out.

Tata's endeavour to set the Safari apart from the Harrier is immediately noticeable in the 2023 model. They've retained the split headlamp design, but this time, it's positioned vertically and serves the dual purpose of sequential turn indicators. The Safari branding is a delightful touch. The full-length LED light bar, especially when illuminated at night, exudes an undeniable allure. The LED treatment of the DRLs has been refined, giving it a sleek and aggressive appearance.

2023 Tata Safari

Similar to the Harrier, the Safari introduces a fresh grille, which appears somewhat like a 3D print from a distance. However, what sets it apart are the exclusive golden inserts, a signature of the Cosmic Gold paint scheme. While the upper section of the vehicle's profile remains largely unchanged, the lower section bears substantial differences.

tata safari 2023 review quora

The Safari maintains its familiar profile, but the introduction of new 19-inch alloy wheels adds a touch of allure to its overall look. At the rear, the design is now more engaging with a broad light bar that seamlessly connects to the new taillamp setup. The welcome function is a thoughtful addition, enhancing the overall user experience.

2023 Tata Safari

Tech & Interior

The infusion of modernity doesn't stop at the exterior of the 2023 Tata Safari. The interior has undergone subtle yet notable enhancements while retaining the familiar dashboard layout. However, these updates introduce a touch of sophistication that elevates the overall experience. The curved layout of the dashboard, in particular, exudes a refined and elegant ambience that complements the overall theme.

2023 Tata Safari

Stepping inside, you'll notice that the new touchscreen has been borrowed from the Red Dark Edition of the Safari, accompanied by a few additional creature comforts. The climate control system now boasts a touch-based panel with a dual-zone setting, catering to the comfort of front passengers. Meanwhile, at the centre console, the introduction of a new gear shifter with shift-by-wire technology is a noteworthy improvement.

2023 Tata Safari

In addition, the rotary knob for selecting drive modes is also new, flanked by dedicated switches for Eco and Sport modes. It's worth noting that the placement of this control array might take a bit of getting used to.

2023 Tata Safari

Safety Features

In the realm of safety, the 2023 Tata Safari closely aligns with its Harrier counterpart. In tandem with the robust OMEGARC platform, Tata has fortified this SUV with an extensive array of safety features. These encompass six airbags, ISOFIX child seat anchors, Electronic Stability Program (ESP), hill hold control, traction control, rollover mitigation, Tyre Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS), and 3-point seat belts equipped with reminders, all as standard offerings. The top-spec Safari gets 7 airbags.

2023 Tata Safari

Moreover, you'll find an impressive collection of 11 Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) functions, though this count reduces to 10 if you opt for the manual transmission. It's worth noting that these ADAS features are available from the Adventure A+ persona variant onwards.

2023 Tata Safari

As for the all-important safety ratings, that's a bit of a waiting game. We'll be among the first to inform you once the SUV undergoes testing, whether it's through the Global program or Bharat NCAP.

Engine & Transmission

Beneath the hood, the 2023 Tata Safari retains its trusty diesel engine, with no petrol option available as of yet. However, there's a significant enhancement in the form of a shift-by-wire system for the automatic variant, developed in-house by Tata, even though the gear shifter itself is sourced from Hyundai. The key question is, how does this affect the driving experience?

2023 Tata Safari

The introduction of shift-by-wire technology has made a palpable difference in driving the Safari. Shifts are now remarkably smoother and nearly seamless, effectively mitigating turbo lag. On the open highway, the gearbox exhibits a longer ratio before initiating a shift, optimizing torque utilization for swift overtaking. This power delivery is distributed evenly, enhancing the driving experience. In urban settings, the Safari performs admirably, thanks to its fluid gear shifts.

2023 Tata Safari

While the Safari's diesel engine gets the job done, it might feel somewhat less refined compared to the engines of its competitors, especially in terms of noise. Additionally, the suspension has room for improvement, as smaller road imperfections and potholes can be felt within the cabin. For those residing in areas with less-than-ideal road conditions, this might be a noticeable downside.

2023 Tata Safari

So, should you consider the new Tata Safari? To put it frankly, if you're not looking to invest in a larger SUV like the Hyundai Tucson, Volkswagen Tiguan, or Skoda Kodiaq, the answer is a resounding yes!

2023 Tata Safari

With its most recent update, Tata has taken a substantial leap forward, although you should be prepared for a higher price tag. Nonetheless, even with the premium pricing, it's likely that the competition will start to feel the pressure, particularly the Mahindra XUV700 , given its long waiting periods. The Hyundai Alcazar , on the other hand, appears to be lagging behind in terms of updates.

2023 Tata Safari

While the absence of a petrol option might affect the Safari's appeal to some, Tata has certainly entered the fray with a compelling offering. It's shaping up to be a worthy contender in the segment.

Tata Safari 2023: A Flagship with Enhanced Features

Dive into tata safari's transformation with enhanced design, features, and performance.

tata safari 2023 review quora

Mercedes-Maybach EQS 680 SUV launched in India at INR 2.25 Crore

Over the past few months, Tata Motors has been on a mission to refresh its entire product portfolio, ensuring that its vehicles stay up-to-date with the latest trends and technologies. While the Harrier and Safari are two models that have retained much of their mechanical prowess of their predecessors, they’ve undergone a transformation in terms of design and tech upgrades. The Safari has always held a special place in the hearts of SUV enthusiasts in India, and now, Tata Motors wants to reignite that with a fresh new appeal.

The Safari’s slogan – ‘Reclaim your life’ – has resonated with enthusiasts and families alike, signifying the promise of adventure and a life well-lived. As we explore the latest iteration of this beloved SUV, the question that looms is whether Tata has updated its flagship offering enough to live up to its iconic past.

We’ve had our hands on the new Tata #Safari , and it’s time to share a sneak peek! For the full story on this updated SUV, visit our website https://t.co/whAJ2icnxF . ? #MotoringWorld #TataSafari #NewSafari @TataMotors_Cars pic.twitter.com/e6MqFFS6Wl — Motoring World (@MyMotoringWorld) October 15, 2023

The Safari’s visual upgrade has significant exterior enhancements, an overhauled interior, and a refreshed array of features. Although it has always boasted a handsome front end, Tata has decided to up the ante with the new model. What’s commendable is that (in contrast with the face-lifted version that shared a close resemblance with the Harrier) this time around, there are distinguishing elements.

tata safari 2023 review quora

TVS Racing Triumphs At Indian National Rally Championship 2024

It now sports vertically oriented LED headlamps, accompanied by a revamped grille featuring distinctive inserts. The front also boasts an attention-grabbing full-width LED light bar, now equipped with a welcoming function. On the sides, Tata has refrained from introducing any alterations to the Safari’s sheet metal. However, it gets an upgrade in the form of larger 19-inch alloys. Speaking of alloy wheels, the ones fitted on the Safari are a design carried over from the Tata Sierra concept, showcased a few years ago. These wheels complement the Safari’s overall look quite well. The eagle-eyed observer will also spot the ‘Safari’ badging adorning the front doors.

Moving to the rear, a re-profiled bumper and updated connected LED tail lamps greet you, complete with a welcome and goodbye function that amplifies the vehicle’s sense of premium elegance.

The new Safari retains a familiar dashboard layout, albeit with crisper lines and contours. It’s hard to miss the upgraded 12.3-inch touchscreen infotainment system, a step up from the previous 10.25-inch version. The lower console area introduces a new touch-based AC control panel. In the automatic variants, you’ll find a new rotary dial with an integrated screen.

View this post on Instagram   A post shared by Motoring World (@motoring_world)

The driver’s seat greets you with a fresh four-spoke steering wheel adorned with an illuminated ‘Tata’ logo and convenient paddle shifters. The wheel tends to attract fingerprints, so it’s advisable to keep a microfibre cloth within easy reach. Also, the driver-side 10.25-inch digital driver’s display offers various views and customisation choices, replacing the previous 7-inch setup.

Tata now offers several new features, including a powered rear tailgate with gesture-based opening and an additional knee airbag, bringing the total to seven. The car boasts an updated 10-speaker JBL sound system, dual-zone climate control, and rear sunshades. Other features like wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, connected car technology, and keyless entry with push-button start continue to impress. In the Safari six-seater variant, front and rear ventilated seats add to the comfort factor, along with a panoramic sunroof. The cabin’s light interior materials create an airy ambience, and the third row in the Safari stands out as one of the more comfortable third-row options in the market.

In terms of safety, the Safari maintains its robust features, including electronic stability control, a 360-degree camera, an electronic parking brake with auto-hold, and the previously available advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS). Notably, the ADAS now includes adaptive cruise control, which adds convenience to the driving experience. During our test drive in the busy streets of Pune, we had the chance to try out the ADAS features, particularly the close-distance follow feature in heavy traffic. It’s worth noting that the system performed admirably without being overly intrusive.

The Tata Safari retains its dependable 2-litre diesel engine, delivering 168 bhp of power and 35.69 kgm of torque. This engine can be mated to either a six-speed manual or a six-speed automatic transmission. Notably, the automatic variant now features paddle shifters, adding a touch of sophistication to the driving experience. In terms of performance, the engine remains noisy when pushed. We appreciated the automatic transmission, as it smoothly shifted both up and down after engaging the paddle shifter. While we didn’t have sufficient time to carry out a fuel efficiency test, it’s likely to be similar to the previous generation due to the same engine.

When it comes to handling, the new Safari is literally several generations ahead of the earlier model. It is surprisingly manoeuvrable through turns, thanks to its relatively lower weight, sturdier monocoque and more contemporary suspension. Its ride quality has improved, too, but it’s not exceptional.

Meanwhile, the steering is quite responsive. The new Safari is surprisingly nimble for its size, offering relatively quick and precise handling. Although there’s a slight degree of roll after turning, it remains well within acceptable limits.

With its fresh design, improved interiors and features, the Safari is a compelling package. It maintains its status as a comfortable and spacious family SUV. However, the engine noise can be a concern when pushed hard. Competing in a market that includes the MG Hector Plus, Hyundai Alcazar, and the upcoming new generation Mahindra XUV700, it faces hefty competition. On paper, it’s an SUV that’s ready to help you ‘Reclaim your life’, but we will have to see if the sales figures also reflect that.

Tata Motors has been honoured with the prestigious ‘Safer Choice’ Award by Global NCAP for safety offered on the Safari and Harrier. This highly revered recognition is for ‘automakers committing to the highest levels of safety performance for cars sold in India’ . Tata has been actively working on improving vehicle and crash safety standards across its product range and the award is a testament of the same.

Tata Safari And Harrier Win Global NCAP ‘Safer Choice’ Award

Both the Safari and Harrier achieved five-star safety ratings in Global NCAP crash tests, for adult and child safety. They had achieved the highest scores in last year’s #SaferCarsForIndia campaign. Following this, Tata Motors sent these vehicles for further ‘Safer Choice’ conformity tests. These require the participating vehicles to meet higher safety standards. The Harrier and Safari came out successful with their Autonomous Emergency Braking (AEB), speed assistance, and Blind Spot Detection (BSD) systems.

David Ward, President of the Towards Zero Foundation, commended Tata Motors’ dedication to safety, saying, “We are pleased to present the Safer Choice Award to Tata Motors for the Safari and Harrier. This award highlights their commitment to achieving high levels of protection for both occupants and vulnerable road users.”

The Safer Choice Award was introduced by Global NCAP in 2018. The protocols were recently updated. To qualify for the award, a vehicle must achieve a five-star rating for both adult and child occupant protection. It must also provide a speed assistance system that scores fully in test criteria, meet UN regulatory requirements for AEB, and offer BSD as a standalone option that adheres to Global NCAP’s performance standards.

Tata Safari And Harrier Win Global NCAP ‘Safer Choice’ Award

Mohan Savarkar, Vice President and Chief Product Officer at Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles Limited, expressed his gratitude for the recognition. “We are honoured to receive the Safer Choice Award for our Tata Safari and Tata Harrier. Our focus on safety is reflected in every vehicle we manufacture, setting a benchmark in the industry. This recognition reinforces our commitment to providing high safety standards alongside comfort and performance,”

Full 5-Star SUV Lineup

Tata Motors currently has the only GNCAP five-star certified SUV lineup in India. The range begins with Punch (ICE and EV), the micro SUV. Other models include the Nexon (ICE and EV forms), Harrier, and Safari. The manufacturer recently spearheaded a new segment- that of SUV coupes- by launching the Curvv in both ICE and EV forms. The GNCAP ratings for the Curvv are yet to be revealed. However, considering the wide range of safety features on offer, it could get a 5-star rating as well.

Tata Motors had also sent the new Safari and Harrier for Bharat NCAP (India’s own independent safety performance evaluation protocol) crash tests. These SUVs received 5-star ratings in BNCAP crash tests, thereby becoming the first-ever vehicles to do so.

Tata Safari And Harrier: What Safety Tech Do They Get?

The facelifted Safari and Harrier have solid builds and come packed with safety features and equipment. The cabin structures have been reinforced to provide symmetric crash performance and side pole impact. Both SUVs are underpinned by the OMEGARC platform- derived from Land Rover’s D8 architecture. The D8 itself has a reputation for being a safe and rugged chassis.

The Safari and Harrier offer six airbags as standard, while the top-spec gets seven of them. Other safety features on offer are Electronic Stability Control, Electronic Stability Control, Seat Belt Reminder for all passengers, 3-point seatbelts in all rows, ISOFIX mounts, Seatbelts with Retractor, Pretensioner, Load Limiter (RPLL) and anchor pretensioner etc.

2023 Tata Safari facelift review: Family car with bachelor's spirit

tata safari 2023 review quora

  • Decent styling updates on the outside
  • Much more premium cabin than before
  • No AWD or petrol engine option
  • Tata Safari gets subtle but significant updates to its exterior styling while the cabin has been armed with newer features.

Tata Safari

The Tata Safari is the flagship model for the Indian car maker that was first introduced in the country in 2021. At that time, the focus was as much on drawing inspiration from an iconic name as was on putting a brand-new model on a pedestal. This eventually resulted in the introduction of a three-row vehicle that promised SUV-like style but claimed MPV-like comfort. Fast forward just two years and the updated Tata Safari has a new wardrobe to show off in 2023.

Tata has been steadily increasing its focus on passenger vehicles that not just drive well and have top-notch safety credentials but look cutting-edge as well. Or at least extremely contemporary. Just look at the models like Altroz hatchback, the updated Nexon compact SUV and Nexon EV or even the latest Harrier SUV. Here are cars across different body types that showcase the current best that Tata Motors' designers have to offer. And it is a treat for sure. Towards this end, the new Tata Safari has been given a noticeable makeover as well even though it obviously retains its OG flavour.

And then there is the pivotal factor of in-car features - the more, the better, even if you end up not using a significant chunk of these in the long run. The Koreans started the trend and rivals like Tata Motors are only too keen to hit back. The Tata Safari, therefore, was always going to be pampered and peppered with features galore. So how do all of these factors come together to manifest in the flagship product from Tata Motors? Here is the first-drive review of the 2023 Tata Safari facelift:

Also watch: 2023 Tata Safari review: Family SUV with bachelor spirit?

2023 Tata Safari facelift: Exterior

The updated Safari looks a tad bit more sporty compared to the outgoing model, while still retaining its largely sophisticated exterior design language. The face, for instance, has been reworked and now sports a new grille, a reworked vertical housing for the fog lamps and headlights, and a stretched DRL bar that connects the sequential DRLs on either side. In a nutshell, the comprehensive updates of the front fascia have given the SUV a butch yet premium look, making it significantly distinctive from the previous model which it has replaced.

Tata Safari

There is not much change in the side profile of the new Tata Safari SUV, apart from the reworked alloy design on the 19-inch wheels. The design is likely to evoke different reactions from different viewpoints instead of inviting unilateral awe. But what works really well is how Tata Motors' designers have managed to snub the use of chrome elements and still come up with a visually striking profile. Overall, the side profile of the SUV looks slightly curvy and pretty clean. The subtly flared wheel arches give the SUV a bold and muscular look, while the new design alloy wheels enhance the premium sporty feel.

There are no chrome elements on the rear of the Safari either, where a stretched LED bar connects the two tail lights and runs all across the length of the trunk door which, by the way, offers powered powered-open option. Besides that, the tailgate looks pretty sculpted thanks to the glossy black panel running through the centre of the trunk that also houses the sleek LED bar. The integrated roof spoiler and chunky black bumper with a thick metal skid plate are other design elements that come enhancing the SUV's bold visual appearance.

2023 Tata Safari facelift: Interior

The new Tata Safari's cabin has become much more premium now and a slew of updates to the feature list as well as to the upholstery lend the vehicle a premium appeal that would have otherwise been restricted to models in segments above the one this car competes in. The top-end Accomplished variant - or persona, as Tata Motors refers to it, comes with a dual-tone colour scheme inside the cabin but the White theme on the seats would be quite hard to maintain in pristine condition.

Tata Safari

The layered dashboard now gets an artificial wood panel which is a nice touch while the central section is dominated by a 12.3-inch touchscreen infotainment display unit that is intuitive, puts out clear feed from the 360-degree cameras and supports Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. The map feed can also be redirected to the all-digital driver display screen for better navigation which now sports customisable layouts.

The steering wheel has also been updated and is now a four-spoke set with mounted controls and has an illuminated Tata logo on it. This is certainly another nice touch from Tata Motors enhancing the premium quotient inside the cabin of the new Safari SUV. The updated steering wheel is quite easy to operate and control the advanced driver-assistance system (ADAS) functionalities that this car offers, courtesy of the layout of the control buttons on the wheel. On that note, the new Tata Safari SUV offers 11 ADAS functions in a further bid to aid driving safety and convenience.

There are plenty of other convenience features that the new Safari packs as well, whether it is the dual-zone climate control function, air purification system, ventilated seats at the front and middle, voice-activated panoramic sunroof, Alexa to Home technology or remote access to the vehicle.

Space remains the same inside the cabin of the new Tata Safari, which means that the SUV continues to be a decently spacious vehicle for passengers in all three rows. Space in that third row, however, continues to come at the cost of a compromised boot storage space. But that's really expected, right?

Tata Safari

Overall, the new Tata Safari SUV come as a very well-appointed vehicle with quite a lot of space for comfortable long trips but now, at least in the top-spec version, is significantly more premium than before.

2023 Tata Safari facelift: Safety

Tata Motors has been taking the front row across different segments in the Indian passenger vehicle market over the last few years when it comes to making safe cars. While the modern Tata cars come with a wide range of safety features, they also come with robust build quality as well. The Tata Safari facelift too comes following the same strategy.

The Tata Safari comes well-equipped with a host of safety features designed to provide peace of mind to the occupants. Some of the advanced safety technologies available onboard the Tata Safari facelift include multiple airbags, electronic stability control, traction control, electronic parking brake with auto hold, rain-sensing wipers, rollover mitigation, hill hold control, 360-degree view HD camera system, adaptive cruise control, lane keep assist and lane departure warning, front collision prevention function, blind spot detection etc. Moreover, it also gets features like ABS with EBD, Isofix child seat anchors etc.

Here are some of the key safety features onboard the Tata Safari.

  • Seven airbags with six as standard
  • Electronic stability control as standard
  • Three-point seatbelts in all rows
  • Seatbelt reminder for all passengers
  • Isofix tethers
  • Seatbelts with retractor, pre-tensioner, load limiter and anchor pretensioner
  • Reinforced cabin structure promising to provide symmetric crash performance and side pole impact

Update: Keeping the trend of introducing safe cars in India, Tata Motors has delivered again with the new Safari and Harrier, as both these two SUVs have achieved five-star Global NCAP safety ratings for adult and child occupant categories. Besides that, the Tata Safari and the Tata Harrier SUVs scored a five-star safety rating at the Bharat New Car Assessment Programme (Bharat NCAP or BNCAP) as well. While announcing the test results Bharat NCAP authorities have announced that the Tata Safari and Tata Harrier have scored five-star ratings with top-notch adult and child safety ratings in frontal, side and pole side impact tests.

2023 Tata Safari facelift: Performance

Here is where the updated Tata Safari SUV could have been improved so much more. But isn't. So much has already been mentioned - and experienced - about the 2.0-litre turbo diesel motor under the hood and the choice between an automatic gearbox and a six-speed manual stick. Yes, the turbocharged diesel motor could have been refined further. Yes, the grunt is still uncomfortably palpable when pushing the vehicle to its limits. But yes, the new Tata Safari - especially with the automatic transmission - is still quite a fun car to drive and has enough power to get a move on when required. The suspension continues to hold its own on rough roads and the steering still has a nice heft to aid matters.

Tata Safari

But why this otherwise very capable model does not also come with a petrol engine under its hood is beyond the comprehension of many. Tata Motors is almost snubbing the petrol-buying audience in the country, a group that is steadily increasing. There is also no 4x4 option for the updated version of the SUV because the platform on which the new Tata Safari is based on does not allow for it. But here is also a miss, especially as this model does go up against authentic off-road options in the market as well.

2023 Tata Safari facelift: Verdict

Tata Safari

The updated Tata Safari is a big step up in terms of its exterior design and cabin features and quality when compared to the previous model. Space has always been this car's strength but the additions to the feature list arm this SUV to the absolute teeth.

The diesel motor and the automatic transmission work extremely well in tandem but as mentioned previously, Tata Motors ought to strongly consider a petrol option for the model as well, especially considering the number of buyers favouring the petrol engines are increasing across India over the last few years

Ownership review: My 2021 Tata Safari XZA 7 seater AT

car

Call it the Buzzard or the Gravitas or the Safari, it is no brainer to see that it is just the 7-seat version of the Harrier, which in itself is a good car to start with. I am no Safari fanboy and am not going to carry bricks or bats to fight over its naming.

B HPian Jude300 recently shared this with other enthusiasts.

My earlier car was a Ford Ecosport, and I loved it so much that I bought it twice; the 2013 launch version and the 2017 facelift version. In my ownership reviews, I had proudly called them The machine I love (Ford Ecosport 1.5L Diesel Titanium (Facelift) - The machine I love) . The ownership experience was excellent and both the cars are with people close to my heart.

Coming to 2021, on the hunt for the proper 7-seater, automatic variant, and SUV appeal, I zeroed in on the new Tata Safari 2021 not because I was in love with it but that was the only option that at the least looked like a SUV among the Innova Crysta, MG Hector Plus, Alcatraz, XUV700. But this time I wasn’t in love with the car, and thus was unable to have a clear decision. My confusions were:

  • Buying the Safari with sunroof or not: I love the panoramic sunroof and it looked so nice on the Safari. But I wasn’t sure if I would use it in Chennai’s hot weather and even if I did, it will be just used as a moon roof (with just the shade open) as I don’t like to keep the car with the windows open and let pollution in. Also, I wasn’t sure if after the initial frenzy settles down and the show-off is done, whether I will even remember to use it. It was a very tough decision to make and finally went with what my mind had to say.
  • Buying the Innova Crysta Gx variant: The 2 big concerns of buying the Tata Safari were “Reliability” and “Service Quality”. This is where the Innova ticked the boxes. However, the Innova had automatic only in the Gx and the Zx (top end) variants. The top end was nearly Rs. 30 lakhs and hence a bit too far from my budget. The Gx missed on more air bags, some nifty features the Safari XZA offered and most importantly both myself and wife didn’t like the MPV look of the Innova Crysta. It turned out to be the deal breaker for not going for the Innova Crysta. The Safari on the other hand look classy and SUVish (except that it doesn’t have the tail mounted spare wheel) and felt more appropriate for our age. Here I went with what the heart had to say.
  • Fear factor: The biggest factor that I had to overcome was the “Fear Factor”. I put my money on the Ford Ecosport twice but never had this element in the decision-making process. Now, I can tell you confidently that it takes a strong heart to put Rs. 25 lakhs on a Tata. I read a lot, did thorough research and the outcome was the fear of being delivered a lemon that lingers till you get your hands on the car and is still in my mind as I write this review. However, seems like most of the issues are sorted now and those that are out there are relating to those from initial batches.

I finally took the leap of faith and booked the 7-seater XZA variant of the Tata Safari (Automatic, top end, without sunroof). I took the test drive with Derik Tata, Nagercoil but couldn’t book with them due to the company lease requirements and thus made the booking with Lakshmi Tata, Chennai. While I would have loved the Black shade, since it was not available, I had to settle for the Royal Blue colour. I was quite excited and this helped me break the deliberate long hiatus that I took from the social network indulgence. The only network which I was still actively following was Team BHP but I wasn’t contributing to it. It felt quite nice to be back in the conversation and the delivery updates by a few members gave me more confidence.

On 17th September, the day I did a virtual PDI of my car as I was in my hometown, Tata Motors launched the Gold Edition of the Tata Safari and along with it silently updated the feature list to include wireless Android Auto / Car Play, wireless charging and air purifier to all XZ variants with a 12k increase to the price. I was a bit disappointed as my car that was August manufactured didn’t have these features.

There were no discounts except for the reduced Insurance premium that was matched with the external quote. I was offered the floor mats and the mud flaps for free. The dealership had also promised to give the sun visor for free but was denied later. Anyway, I wasn’t going to fix that as it came with a chrome lining which I personally didn’t like.

The 2 months wait, thanks to the long lease process in our company was indeed quite tiresome due to the “fear factor” and the handsome dose of negative news.

The delivery process is nothing to write about. I took the delivery at around 8pm after waiting there for nearly 2 hours due to the delay in getting the HSRP number plate. I have shared my feedback about the dealer in a separate section at the end.

I am usually not a fan of adding additional electronics or accessories that just add to the visual appeal (mostly they look awkward). However, I wanted the below add-ons / accessories the details of which I will elaborate in their respective sections in the review

  • 7D Floor mats.
  • Dashcam: 70mai Pro Plus+ A500S Dash Cam + right-angled USB adapter.
  • Extended warranty: Unlike the confidence I had in the Ecosport for which I didn’t take the extended warranty, it took me a lot of self-convincing to buy a Tata. When I took the plunge, I vowed to myself that I would go for the extended warranty.
  • Paint Protection film for the door sills, edges and ORVM (from Tufkote- DIY Project)
  • Screen guard for Infotainment screen: Amazon

Call it the Buzzard or the Gravitas or the Safari, it is no brainer to see that it is just the 7-seat version of the Harrier, which in itself is a good car to start with. I am no Safari fanboy and am not going to carry bricks or bats to fight over its naming. Enough said, please hop on to my Sapphire for a Safari.

tata safari 2023 review quora

What I like:

  • Has the bold SUV DNA. It’s not imposing but has good road presence and is a head turner.
  • Solid build; good set of safety features (6 airbags, ABS, EBD, ESP, hill hold, hill descent control, brake disc wiping etc. give you loads of confidence.
  • Most comfortable 3rd row seats in the segment. Sliding and reclining 2nd row seats gives added comfort.
  • My most loved & useful features include Electronic Park Brake with Auto hold, auto-dimming IVRM, charging port for almost all occupants, Eco, City & Sport modes, auto headlamps & wipers, cruise control, auto folding ORVM and more.
  • Excellent drivability in the city and the highways. Has enough juice to put a smile on your face (don't expect a race car though)
  • Though huge in size, it drives more like a car and is easy to maneuver. The monocoque platform shows its strengths in the way it handles too.
  • NVH levels are well controlled; when the engine is warm its hard to believe its a diesel mill.
  • Amazing audio system is more than sufficient to entertain me and most of us.
  • The automatic gearbox is simply superb. As already mentioned in many reviews, this is the option to go with.

What I don’t like:

  • Limited colours and too much of chrome. The Dark edition of the Harrier looks smashing; something similar on the Safari would have been my pick.
  • The 8.8” screen is too small especially with Android Auto active.
  • White Interiors; hard to maintain (especially with young kids); would have preferred a darker shade.
  • No Wireless Android Auto / Car play / wireless charging. SHAME ON YOU TATA for not launching with these features. (I missed it by a whisker as an update to feature list included it in from the following month. Those buying now would not have this problem)
  • Very small boot but it wasn’t a deal breaker. I would be using it mostly with 4 / 6 occupants and hence with one seat of the 50:50 foldable third row will give me the required space to carry luggage.
  • It only has leatherette seats and not genuine leather seats. The brochure misleads us by mentioning “Premium Benecke Kaliko™ Signature Oyster White Leather# Seat Upholstery & Door Pad Inserts and Leather# Wrapped Steering Wheel & Gear Shift Knob”. I missed to see what the “#” was for as many would do. Later noticed “#Leatherette” somewhere in the bottom in a font I barely can read. WHY WOULD SOMEONE WANT TO SHORTEN “Leatherette” to “Leather” – Purely with an intention to mislead the customer.

Look from the front and you will easily make out that it is the big brother from the Tata family. The familiar touches found in the Nexon is evident in the Harrier and the Safari. The huge windscreen and the high seating make it evident that it will give you a great view of the road:

tata safari 2023 review quora

All variants without the sunroof come with the stepped -up roof that are ribbed for better strength. It makes these variants look taller than the sunroof variants:

tata safari 2023 review quora

What I don’t like is the tri-arrow chrome accents in the front grill and the chrome around the head lamp cluster. It adds so much bling to the otherwise neutral car:

The plastic skid plate in Silver adds an SUV touch but are not functional. The towing hook is hidden under the skid plate and the cover needs to be removed to access it. Screw driver provided as part of the tool kit (Quite thoughtful ):

Adequate underbody protection:

The black ORVM looks classy though it doesn’t stand out in the Royal Blue colour:

The headlamp cluster is nicely done. Hate the cheesy chrome garnish though. The headlamps on the XZ variants are Xenon HID projector headlamps for the low beam:

Look closely and you can see a growling lion:

Turn to the sides and that’s where the Safari shouts of its SUV character than the cross-over silhouette the Harrier carries. The rear quarter glass is large and well proportioned. The integration of the rear is well designed that it doesn’t look like it was an afterthought:

The silver plastic that runs from the D-pillar to the roofrails look good to me while some might not like it. The variants without sunroof get functional roof rails that can carry luggage. See how the stepped-up roof is seen through the roof rails. The sunroof variants get a cheesy chrome element instead:

The chrome door handles and the window line are subtle and break the monotonous paint work:

A closer look at the door handle:

The fuel cap is on the driver side of the car. A gentle push and it opens wide:

The 18” rims add to the height and the ground clearance of the car. It fills the wheel arches well but the increased size with lower profile = slightly bouncier ride + more expensive to change tires. The stock tires are Bridgestone Ecopia EP850 (235/60 R18) that are known for lower roll resistance that contribute to better fuel efficiency (Bridgestone claims 10% increase). I am not an expert with judging the tires and hence can’t really comment on them but to me it offers ample grip and not noisy:

The R18 machined alloys also look neat, mature and syncs with the character of the car:

tata safari 2023 review quora

The LED tail lamps have deep cuts and wrap through the rear corner. It looks sleek and neat:

tata safari 2023 review quora

Look at how deep the cuts are:

The rear of the car doesn’t carry the otherwise bulky look of the car. It is tighter and makes the car look smaller than it is. Compare it with the rear end of the Innova. The Safari mascot is a neat touch but there is no variant badge:

tata safari 2023 review quora

The XZ variants get the shark fin antenna while the others get the stubby type ones. The rear spoiler adds character too. The ribbed stepped up roof for rigidity:

tata safari 2023 review quora

The bumper gets faux exhaust vents and the single exhaust pipe is tucked away neatly and not visible in normal view. The spare tyre is 235/70 R16 with steel rims hence only a 4-wheel rotation is possible:

tata safari 2023 review quora

The Safari comes with the “Vocal for local” branding (looks like it was designed by a 5th grade student) which is placed awkwardly in the rear glass. Not that I am not vocal for local but as with any other unnecessary sticker, I have removed it. Same goes for the dealership sticker:

I like to view the Safari in these angles:
