Ted Cruz launches 'Keep Texas, Texas' campaign tour in Georgetown

U .S. Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX) launched his “Keep Texas, Texas” tour in Georgetown on Friday, emphasizing that he won’t let anyone "California his Texas."

“Everyone that wants to turn Texas into California, look at this room and realize you cannot have the great state of Texas!” Cruz said.

Cruz said his main concerns as a senator include prioritizing jobs and the cost of living, as well as securing the Texas-Mexico border.

After being loudly welcomed onstage by supporters at Mesquite Creek Outfitters in Georgetown, Cruz began his speech by saying that America is in a crisis because of inflation, the drug epidemic, national security policies and the border crisis.

“We’re having crime in every city in America because of Kamala Harris’ open borders,” Cruz said.

Cruz promised his voters that if he is elected and a new administration is in Washington, they would secure the border. He also acknowledged the massive influx of people moving into Texas from largely big Democratic states. He promised he wouldn't let that "change the Texas he and his supporters know and love."

"We want to keep jobs in the state of Texas, we want to keep safety and security in the state of Texas, we want low taxes in the state of Texas, we want low regulation in the state of Texas, we stand with the men and women of law enforcement in the state of Texas," Cruz said.

Cruz was asked about the tragic school shooting in Uvalde, and how he would make Uvalde families comfortable voting for a Republican, given their strong stance on gun laws.

He responded saying he's spent the last 12 years trying to protect children and make schools safer by repeatedly introducing legislation that would go after criminals who buy guns illegally, but every time he's done so, Cruz says Democrats "cynically" blocked it.

"Instead, they try to use it as an excuse to disarm law biding Americans, and that doesn't work," Cruz said. "That doesn't keep people safe, but it's their political agenda, and I'm going to keep fighting to keep our kids safe."

Cruz also went after his Democratic opponent U.S. Rep. Colin Allred’s time in Congress, saying his votes "haven’t been in line with what Texas voters want."

“I think the elections are about records, my record vs. Colin Allred’s record,” Cruz said. “His record is extreme liberal. His first four years in the House, he voted 100% with Nancy Pelosi. That’s not where the people of Texas are.”

Cruz criticized Allred’s “basement” campaign style, that he says is the same as Kamala Harris'. He claimed both Allred and Harris don’t do interviews or events because they can’t defend their records.

“He's voted repeatedly for open borders over and over and over again, that's not where the people of Texas are,” Cruz said. “He's voted for defunding the police. That's not where the people of Texas are … so we're going to focus on my record and his record, and we're going to focus on my vision for Texas, and his vision for Texas.”

Meanwhile, Allred was one of the speakers on the final night of the Democratic National Convention on Thursday night, giving full support to Kamala Harris as the Democratic party’s nominee for president.

Cruz also made stops Friday in Waco and the DFW area, then plans to go on to Tyler, Beaumont and end the campaign tour in Houston on Saturday.

The U.S. Chamber of Commerce endorsed Sen. Ted Cruz in his reelection campaign Tuesday after previously endorsing his Democratic challenger, U.S. Rep. Colin Allred, D-Dallas, in past cycles.

The pro-business group, which mostly backs Republican candidates, endorsed Allred in his competitive 2020 race and in 2022. Allred’s campaign often cites the endorsement along with his endorsement by the AFL-CIO union group as a sign of his bipartisan bonafides.

Both years, he was running for reelection in the U.S. House, in 2020 against Genevieve Collins and in 2022 against Antonio Swad. His 2020 reelection was one of only two in Texas targeted by national Republicans who saw him as vulnerable that year. Allred was one of only 14 U.S. House Democrats to receive the chamber’s endorsement in 2022.

The Chamber unveiled its endorsement for Cruz during a tour through North Texas, San Antonio and Houston with the senator. Neil Bradley, the group’s executive vice president and chief policy officer, joined Cruz for the tour.

"As a leader in the U.S. Senate, Ted Cruz has been a champion for pro-growth policies that help Texas businesses, individuals, and families achieve their American dream," Bradley said in a statement. "Senator Cruz has a proven track record of support for policies that cut taxes, fight regulatory overreach, boost domestic energy production, modernize infrastructure, and promote trade, while protecting American jobs.”

Cruz said in a statement that his top priority when he first entered Congress was “fighting for jobs.”

"I am proud of my work in the U.S. Senate to advocate for legislation that supports free markets, limits government, and fosters economic development, and I will continue to fight day in and day out to preserve and grow Texas's thriving 'Main Street' businesses," he said.

Allred’s campaign reiterated that the congressman backed bipartisan legislation supported by the chamber that Cruz voted against in the Senate.

“Colin Allred will always be a fighter for the Texas business community and their workers. As the most bipartisan Texan in Congress, he’s championed the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law and the CHIPS and Science Act, and has worked hand in hand with the business community to grow our economy and create Texas jobs,” Allred campaign spokesperson Josh Stewart said in a statement. “Ted Cruz voted no on these Texas industry priorities because all he cares about is himself.”

Both Cruz and Allred have been leaning into their legislative resumes as they run in a competitive race for the Senate seat. An August YouGov poll by the University of Houston’s Hobby School put Cruz at only 2 percentage points ahead of Allred.

This cycle, Cruz — who has long made a name for himself as a partisan warrior — is touting his position as the top Republican on the Senate Commerce Committee and his work on bipartisan legislation , including shepherding through a massive aviation safety bill through the Senate. During the 2021-2022 congressional session, Cruz ranked as the 16th most effective Republican senator by the Center for Effective Lawmaking at the University of Virginia and Vanderbilt University.

Allred’s campaign asserted the congressman still has a strong relationship with business interests throughout the state while maintaining his union ties. Allred received the Texas AFL-CIO’s endorsement in this year’s Democratic primary against the more progressive state Sen. Roland Gutierrez.

Ted Cruz Returns to Iowa With 6-Day Marathon Bus Tour

After nearly a month away from Iowa, Cruz returns with 28 counties in mind.

— -- After nearly a month away from Iowa, GOP presidential candidate Ted Cruz will embark today on a six-day bus tour visiting 28 counties as part of his campaign’s goal to secure every corner of Iowa before the Feb. 1 caucuses.

“We’re not going to let up. We’re going to be putting on lots of miles and making lots of stops,” Iowa campaign chairman Bryan English said.

The Texas senator is on track to visit all 99 Iowa counties by Feb. 1, traveling to 77 by the bus tour’s end on Saturday, according to his campaign.

But Cruz’s rivals in the GOP presidential field have called him out for spending time elsewhere the past month.

"While other candidates have been largely absent from Iowa in December, Marco is spending time meeting voters and doing what we need to do to succeed in February,” Marco Rubio campaign spokesman Alex Conant told ABC News last week.

During the days leading up to Christmas, Cruz embarked on a “Take Off With Ted” tour of key states, many of them in the South, that will hold their nominating contests March 1. During that time, Cruz surged in polls nationally and in Iowa. While Cruz may have campaigned in other states for most of December, he has actually held nearly 30 more events in Iowa than Rubio.

“We have never thought you win a campaign by just having an office in the Des Moines metro area and stopping in, doing the same trips over and over,” English, Cruz’s Iowa campaign chairman, said.

Ted Cruz Brings In Nearly $20M in Fundraising Surge

Ted cruz gaining on donald trump in gop race, ted cruz secures trifecta of key iowa endorsements.

English said the campaign studied previous caucus winners, trying to learn from their mistakes.

“If you don’t have your machinery in place to take advantage of an Iowa caucus win, it’s very difficult to build that after caucus,” English said.

Cruz’s intense bus tour schedule has him meeting with voters in small towns across the state, making up to six stops in one day, sometimes as late as 10:45 p.m. The stops include a church, Casey’s General Store, a Pizza Ranch and community centers.

The campaign has also rented a dormitory called “Camp Cruz” to house volunteers from across the country. The “strike force,” as the campaign calls the volunteers, is making calls and knocking on doors to get people to caucus.

Cruz, 45, galvanized those supporters and others on a nationwide conference call on New Year’s Eve. He also gave his supporters a warning: He and the campaign will increasingly become a target of negative attacks.

“We’re winning right now, and as a result I want to tell everyone, get ready,” he said. “Strap on the full armor of God, get ready for the attacks that are coming. ...We ain’t seen nothing yet."

Some of the attacks already lobbed include ethanol advocates going after Cruz for his opposition to the Renewable Fuel Standard. Ethanol is a hot-button issue in Iowa.

Two super PACs supporting Cruz, Keep The Promise I and Stand For Truth, have announced television ad buys in Iowa that could help fend off the onslaught of attacks for which Cruz is bracing himself.

On that same New Year’s Eve conference call to supporters, Cruz made a prediction that he could win the GOP nomination in the next 90 days.

“There is a very good possibility that the Republican primary will be decided by the end of March,” Cruz said.

After conventions, Senate candidates hit campaign trail

WASHINGTON — With the national political conventions now over, the real campaigning begins up and down the ballot. In the biggest statewide contest in Texas, Sen. Ted Cruz, R-Texas, and Rep. Colin Allred, D-Dallas, are both hitting the campaign trail and talking up the most important issues for their voters.

What You Need To Know

In the biggest statewide contest in texas, sen. ted cruz and colin allred are both hitting the campaign trail and talking up the most important issues for their voters on saturday at a “women for allred” rally in dallas, texas women shared their harrowing stories of suffering life-threatening pregnancies, but being denied an abortion because of the state’s abortion restrictions cruz launched the “keep texas, texas” tour and received the endorsement of the national border patrol council.

On Saturday at a “Women for Allred” rally in Dallas, several Texas women shared their harrowing stories of suffering life-threatening pregnancies, but being denied an abortion because of the state’s abortion restrictions. Texas’ only exception to the procedure is to save the life of the pregnant patient, but abortion rights supporters say the penalties are so severe that doctors delay care. “I knew that carrying a fetus with a fatal diagnosis was only putting my life in danger,” said Dr. Austin Dennard, an obstetrician-gynecologist who left the state to get an abortion after learning her fetus was not going to develop a skull and brain fully. “Despite careening towards organ failure, I wasn’t dead enough for Texas,” said another Texas woman, Lauren Miller, who was pregnant with twins and at 12 weeks learned one fetus has a fatal abnormality.

Dennard and Miller are part of a group of Texas women who sued the state seeking more clarifications in the law. At the rally, the women all laid the blame on the state’s Republican leaders.  “The state of Texas wanted me to continue a pregnancy where I would have to wait for my baby to die and put my own health at risk and a future pregnancy at risk,” said Kate Cox, who had a fatal fetal condition and sued Texas to ensure she qualified under the exception. Cox eventually left the state. It is why they are standing with Allred in his bid to unseat Cruz in November.

“This is a close race. You know what this margin is? This is a margin that you can make happen, that we can make happen,” Allred told supporters.

The Dallas rally highlighted how three years ago the state enacted a six-week abortion ban. Allred also criticized Cruz.

“If you do this to Texas women, if you are singularly responsible in a way that almost no other Texan can claim to be because you put the judges on the court who took this right away, because you helped elect the legislators who passed these laws at the state level, because you called for these laws to be passed, you celebrated when they were passed, then you should lose your job,” Allred told the crowd.

After Dallas, Allred campaigned in Tyler and Marshall over the weekend. Just days earlier, Allred spoke at the main stage of the Democratic National Convention in Chicago, where he backed Vice President Kamala Harris. “I think Kamala Harris is on a bit of a sugar high,” Cruz told reporters on Friday in Edinburg.  Cruz supported the Supreme Court ending the nationwide right to an abortion and says the issue should be left up to the states. Cruz’s campaign has criticized Allred’s endorsement of Harris and has tried to portray both as too far-left for the big red state of Texas. “Colin Allred and border czar Kamala Harris are on the exact same page,” Cruz said.   Cruz has also kicked his campaign into high gear over the past few days. His campaign launched what is being dubbed as the “Keep Texas, Texas” tour. On Friday, he made stops in Georgetown, Waco and The Colony. On Saturday, Cruz went to Tyler, Beaumont and Cypress. During the tour, he touched on the issues of crime, the economy and border security. Days earlier, Cruz earned an endorsement from the National Border Patrol Council.  “It is a humanitarian crisis, it is a public health crisis. It is a public safety crisis, and it is a national security crisis, and I’ll tell you, in the whole history of the country, we have never had an administration do what Joe Biden and Kamala Harris have done,” Cruz told the crowd.

“We will secure this border. We will protect our country, and we are going to bring America back,” Cruz continued.  No Democrat has won a statewide office in Texas in 30 years. Polls have put Cruz ahead, but Allred’s campaign appears encouraged following recent poll numbers showing he’s within striking distance.

U.S. Chamber of Commerce backs Ted Cruz for Senate over Colin Allred

U.S. Sen. Ted Cruz, R-Texas, speaks to delegates at the 2024 Texas GOP Convention in San Antonio on May 25, 2024.

After Rallying With President Trump, Cruz Brings His Bus Tour To North Texas

October 25, 2018 / 6:44 PM CDT / CBS Texas

ARLINGTON, Texas (CBSDFW.COM) - After rallying with President Donald Trump in Houston Monday, Texas Senator Ted Cruz brought his bus tour to North Texas.

In Dallas Wednesday morning he told supporters, "We've got a bus as big as the state of Texas. We're traveling every part of the state to turn out the vote."

On Thursday, Cruz's bus stopped in Arlington.

No matter where he travels, Cruz urges supporters to get to the polls and bring nine other people with them.

Sen. Ted Cruz

In heavily Democratic Dallas County, there has been record turnout in early voting.

CBS 11 asked the Republican incumbent how confident he is that he's left no stone unturned to get his supporters out and that the people will be with him.

"I'm very confident right now. I think the momentum is without our campaign," said Sen. Cruz. "The last two months, the people of Texas have really begun focusing on the issues and on the record - my record and Congressman O'Rourke's record."

He told the crowds in Houston, Dallas and Arlington the cuts in tax rates and regulations that he supported have created many jobs and a booming economy.

Besides the economy, Cruz says his other priorities are to secure the border and to protect the Constitution and Bill of Rights.

During CBS 11's exclusive interview with President Trump in Houston Monday evening , he praised Cruz. "He's doing a good job for this state."

Regarding whether or not the high early voting turnout in Dallas County gave him pause, President Trump said, "No, I think it's going to be very good. I think Ted is going to get a lot of votes. I think we'll get a lot of votes from red and blue. I'd be very surprised to see anything but a big fat beautiful victory."

After exchanging insults during the Presidential primary in 2016, President Trump and Sen. Cruz have worked together on their agenda and the Senator's close race against Democrat Beto O'Rourke .

During his rally, the President told the large crowd at the Toyota Center, "Nobody has helped me more with your tax cuts, with your regulations and with all the things that we're doing including the military and our vets than Senator Ted Cruz."

Cruz said Wednesday, "I'm glad the President came to Texas. When it came to Texas we had over 100,000 people signed up for the rally. It was incredible. The energy was incredible."

During the rally, Cruz said he looked forward to campaigning alongside the President when he runs for re-election in 2020.
