Tipon Pikillacta and Andahuaylillas Tour Itinerary

The meeting will be at 5:00 pm the evening before the trek begins. In case you can´t at this time “please let us know” to coordinate another time.

Day 1: Cusco - Inca Site of Tipon - Pre-Inca site of Pikillacta - Rumiqolqa - Andahuaylillas Church - Cusco

Our tour Tipon Pikillacta and Andahuaylillas Day Tour from Cusco  will start at 8:00 am, you will be collected from your hotel in Cusco and drive to the archeological site of  TIPON , which is one of the most important sites in the area and an ancient location where the Incas worshipped water, one of their sacred natural elements. Even today, water still flows through Tipon’s impressive series of canals and terraces, which you’ll explore with your expert guide.

Next, head to  PIKILLAQTA  is a massive pre-Inca ruin site that consists of more than 700 structures: 200 Kanchas (departments), 504 qolqas (storage rooms) and multiple other buildings that could have housed about ten thousand people. The city was displayed in a harmonious and symmetric way, in blocks with straight streets.

The walls were made of mud and stones, wide at the bottom and tapering towards the top. In the early 1990’s, these walls were covered with mud 9cm thick, that were then painted with plaster. The floors were also made with a kind of thick plaster which would have displayed the appearance of a white city.

After exploring pre-Inca site of Pikillaqta, we continue driving to  ANDAHUAYLILLAS  that is one of the best colonial churches, called San Pedro de Andahuaylillas, also known as “The Sistine Chapel of America” due to the quality of its art pieces.

Built at the beginning of VII century, the interior of the temple is decorated with murals by Luis Riaño (XVII century). Additionally, the church houses a majestic piano, numerous canvases by the Academy of Cusco, silver work and baroque altars.

After exploring these incredible places of  Tipon, Pikillaqta & Andahuaylillas  with your private guide in the South Valley of Cusco, you’ll be back in Cusco and dropped off at your hotel in time to enjoy a full evening!

Optional:  On our way back to Cusco we can stop in Saylla town to get a chance and try the traditional Cusco fried pork (chicharrones). Then we will drive you back to your hotel in Cusco.

Travel Guide

Note on the entrance tickets or  tourist ticket of cusco.

To visit the historical sites in the Sacred Valley, it is important to purchase an admission partial ticket (Boleto Turistico Parcial) whose cost is PEN 70 Peruvian soles (USD 25 per ticket) which allows you to access four historical sites like Pisac, Ollantaytambo, Moray, and Chinchero (in other words, it is used only for Sacred Valley). This ticket is valid for 2 days.

Therefore, in our quotation, this entrance ticket is included. If you take one of the day treks, in which, the historical sites are not part of the itinerary, so the admission ticket will be excluded from the quotation.

If you get planned to visit other historical sites out of Sacred Valley, like the ones located in Cusco, our recommendation is that you need to purchase the general admission ticket (Boleto Turistico General) whose cost is PEN 130 Peruvian Soles (USD 45 per ticket), this ticket allows you to visit 14 historical sites, which are located in Cusco, Southern part of Cusco, Sacred Valley, and some museums in Cusco city.

The ticket is valid for 10 days. The Maras salt ponds ticket is not part of the boleto turistico parcial or boleto turistico general (partial or general ticket), this ticket should be purchased at the entrance of the same place, whose cost is PEN 10 Peruvian soles (about USD 4 per ticket).

Andahuaylas Tour

03 Days / 02 Nights Andahuaylas (3200 m.a.s.l.) is situated 180 km. west of Cusco and is the capital of the department of Apurimac. Greatest attraction of this area are its landscapes, the warmth of its people, diverse archaeological remains, and typical villages.

Itinerary:

Day 01: andahuaylas.

It starts with the arrival to Andahuaylas city and transfer to your hotel. Then, after a well-deserved bath and breakfast, we will commence the visit to the city. It includes the city’s Main Square which has a fountain built only with one stone and Andahuaylas’ main church: San Pedro’s Cathedral.

Then, we will visit the Campanayocc Sanctuary 5 km apart from Andahuaylas (30 minute travel by car). This sanctuary possesses a modern architecture, built in 1995, is fairly new and hosts many people faithful to the Catholic Church. It is specially full-on September 14, it’s festive day and has a natural view from which you can appreciate Andahuaylas city and the paradisiacal beauty of Chumbao valley.

In the afternoon, we will return to the hotel in Andahuaylas city.

Day 02 : Surroundings

After breakfast, we start our tour to the Pacucha lagoon (17 km northeast to the city of Andahuaylas and a 45 minute trip by car). This lagoon is characterized for being 3200 m.a.s.l. while having intensely blue waters surrounded by yellowish sand and natural islands habitat to different species of ducks.

Later that day, we will go to the archaeological site, the Complejo Sondor (2km from the Pachuca lagoon and a 30 minute trip by foot). It has a dimension of 10 hectares and the buildings were originally made by the millenary Chanca culture (600-900 A.C.). Nonetheless, historians confirm that the Complejo Sondor was later occupied by Incas. These buildings have a pyramidal shape and are surrounded by walls and terraces that lead to open spaces.

Apparently, Sondor was the place to perform religious activities, due to its location, for the central piramid and its strategic view of the mystical Pacucha lagoon.

By 5 pm we will return to the city and to our accommodation in Andahuaylas

Day 03 : Chincheros

First, it’s breakfast at the hotel.

7 am we will depart to Chincheros where we will visit the Cocharcas Sanctuary (110 km northeast from Andahuaylas city, a 3 hour trip by bus). It is a baroque style temple built with ashlar stone precisely placed and cut in the early XVII century. It has 2 towers, a vault and a dome for masonry decorated with glazed tiles and in its interior, holds important canvases of the Escuela Cusqueña and some Spanish masters. The main altar shows ornaments finely carved in gold sheets.

In the afternoon, we will return to Andahuaylas.

End of services.

TIPON, PIKILLAQTA & ANDAHUAYLILLAS TOUR

Half Day Tour

pikillaqta, pre-inca ruin, pre-inka ruin, pikillaqta ruins, pikillacta, cusco, peru, sacred valley, tour, sacred valley tour, tipon, stone walls, killa expeditions

The TIPON, PIKILLAQTA, ANDAHUAYLILLAS TOUR explores three beautiful sites south of Cusco.

It is a wonderful way to begin acclimatizing to the high altitude of Cusco and get ready for a trek if you have booked one. This tour is south of Cusco and off the beaten path so you won’t run into many tourists on this one. TIPON  has numerous impressive terraces that are still being cultivated today. Amazingly the irrigation system that the Inca’s built is still serving agricultural areas nearby. It consists of carved stone channels, precisely calculated, constituting a hydraulic engineering masterpiece.  PIKILLAQTA  is a massive pre-Inca ruin site that consists of more than 700 structures: 200 Kanchas (departments), 504 qolqas (storage rooms) and multiple other buildings that could have housed about ten thousand people. ANDAHUAYLILLAS  has a stunning church called San Pedro de Andahuaylillas, also known as “The Sistine Chapel of America” due to the quality of its art pieces. Built at the beginning of VII century, the interior of the temple is decorated with murals by Luis Riaño (XVII century). Additionally, the church houses a majestic piano, numerous canvases by the Academy of Cusco, silver work and baroque altars.

Minimum passengers necessary for tour departure: 2 people (small group, 1 person or private/custom treks possible with extra fee). Maximum trekkers per group: 10 people (special, private party groups can exceed maximum).

WHEN TO GO & DEGREE OF DIFFICULTY

Year-round, though the best weather is usually seen between March/April to November (or dry season). This tour is rated as easy to moderate as it involves gentle walking at each site. This is a great acclimatizing day tour as it is gentle walking at a lower altitude than Cusco. Please note if the weather is very poor the trail could be dangerous and we may have to cancel the trip and may be able to substitute another day hike or day tour instead, depending on the circumstances.

COVID 19 PRACTICES

We take your health and that of our staff very seriously. We adhere to the recommended rules as outlined by the Peruvian Government, including border closures, trail closures, face-covering orders, quarantine orders, negative COVID19 test results, and the eventual need for proof of COVID19 vaccination. We have instituted a number of increased hygiene precautions for food preparation and treks/tours outlined below. Face coverings will be worn at all times by the guide/staff and are required of guests in towns and ruin sites and anywhere else it is mandated per Peruvian rules. Social distancing will be observed to the best of our ability, especially along the trail if you wish to remove face coverings while hiking. Increased hand hygiene will be practiced and temperatures checked daily. Anyone exhibiting COVID19 symptoms will need to self-quarantine.

Machu Picchu has been declared a Safe Travels destination. In line with the good news that Peru is opening to a wider range of international visitors, we have updated our safety protocols to help keep you safe while you are travelling with us.

Trips will take place in small groups (8 people per group, including guide), and according to the instructions we receive from the Ministry of Tourism. All of our transport will continue to be private services.

Our guides, drivers, and representatives:

  • Will wear masks and use antibacterial gel at all times
  • Will be monitored continuously with temperature and symptom checks. If anyone has symptoms, they will be obliged to rest and recover, and substituted with other staff members

We will ensure social distancing by:

  • Keeping 1-meter distance between passengers when boarding vehicles.
  • Restricting physical contact between our staff and customers.

To add to your packing list:

  • Cloth or medical face masks
  • Face shields
  • Alcohol-based hand sanitizer (at least 60% alcohol)
  • Disinfectant wipes (at least 70% alcohol) for surfaces
  • Digital thermometer

We recommend the following steps to protect yourself and others when you travel:

  • Always maintain a distance of 6 feet (2 meters) between you and others
  • Avoid crowds
  • Wear a face mask and a face shield
  • Avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth
  • Cover coughs and sneezes
  • Do not travel if you are feeling sick
  • Disinfect your hands often. It’s especially important after going to the bathroom, before eating, and after coughing, sneezing, or blowing your nose
  • Wash your hands often with soap and water for at least 30 seconds
  • If soap and water aren’t available, use a hand sanitizer that contains at least 60% alcohol. Cover all surfaces of your hands and rub your hands together until they feel dry

With our updated protocol, we hope to offer you a safe stay without compromising on our excellent service. We will continue adapting our standards according to the recommendations of health experts.

The Inca Trail 2D is open again as of Nov 2020 with a capacity of 150 people per day (down from 500).

We do not have confirmation as yet for the Classic Inca Trail 4D but we will keep you posted.   There are vulnerable communities along this trail and they are being closely monitored by the Peruvian Government.

The minister has informed that only 675 people will be allowed inside Machu Picchu per day, which is 30% of its capacity pre-pandemic.

Visitors will enter in groups of 8, with a tour guide, and will need to maintain a distance of 1.5-2 meters apart. Visitors will only be permitted entry when accompanied by a professional guide and have their tickets booked through a registered travel agent, such as Killa Expeditions.

All of the above information is subject to change. Right now Peru has opened its borders to most countries but we recommend checking specifics for your country as these are updated regularly.

Wishing you happy and safe travels!

  • Andahuaylas’ diverse landscape is home to picture perfect lakes, Inca ruins, a 16th century festival, and a rock forest that will amaze you. Read this one traveler’s journey through this land of contrasts and wonders.

Herds of pigs roll in the patches of mud along the road, while a pair of bulls lock horns in a battle for supremacy, their shepherdess tossing stones in a vain bid to separate them. Nearby, a group of peasant farmers are preparing huatia , the age-old Andean tradition of roasting tubers. Around us stand wattle huts called chucllas , where the shepherds sleep, cook and store their food. The landscape is impressive, the air is thin, and it is here that life begins for the inhabitants of Andahuaylas.

andahuaylas-apurimac

Parccococha is one of the six lakes that form the Chumbao River , and thereafter is a 15 kilometer valley which is home to Andahuaylas, Talavera and San Jerónimo. Its blue waters are filled with trout and silversides, introduced by state programs. Fishing enables the shepherds to carry their diet. The shepherds spend their lives amidst these plains of yellowing ichu grass , home to foxes, partridges and añases (a type of skunk).

  • Land of contrasts

Some 70% of the inhabitants of Andahuaylas make a living from agriculture and livestock . Most families own a plot of land which produces food for their own table, plus sheep, cows and pigs which provide milk or are sold at the Sunday fairs. Some own horses and llamas which are reared in the highlands, running almost wild, grazing on the clumps of ichu grass, one of the few species that can grow at 4,000 meters .

Chumbao Valley , which is home to Andahuaylas, Talavera and San Jerónimo, ranges in altitude from 2,000-3,500 meters, and boasts a mild climate with summer temperatures of 25°C, making its land ideal for farming. In the past, Andahuaylas was considered the country’s most important potato-producing province. However, it is an impoverished region , as is the entire department in general. Official statistics show the Apurímac to be the country’s second-poorest department. Terrorism in the 1980s hit this region hard, and the inhabitants’ poverty contrasts with the agricultural and tourist potential of its impeccable geography.

  • Tourism Potential

Andahuaylas is teeming with tourist attractions. The sight of Lake Pacucha , just 16 km from the city, is a picture postcard memory that visitors will carry away after leaving this area. The temperate climate afforded by its altitude of 3,000 meters mean that the turquoise waters of the lake are surrounded by trees, crop fields and totora reeds, which hide ducks, gulls and the occasional visiting flamingo .

andahuaylas sondor

Just 2 km from Pacucha lay the ruins of Sóndor, a 500-year-old Chanka (a Quechua ethnic group) citadel where the Incas also left their mark. The citadel was the site of a long-running war between the two tribes, who battled each other for the control of the valley of Chumbao and most of the southern Andes.

Every year for the past three years, since work was finished on the restoration of the ruins, the local authorities hold the Sóndor Raymi festival on June 19, involving 600 actors to bring the great Chanka epic tale to life: from their mythical origin in Lake Choclococha, Huancavelica, to the departure of Anqohuayllo and his warriors to conquer Cuzco.

Fervor in the Andes : Virgen de Cocharcas

The truck takes us to a remote village hidden amongst the hills on the right bank of the Pampas River. This is Cocharcas , a cluster of 40 mud-brick and tile houses some 70 km from Andahuaylas, in the province of Chincheros. For most of the year, the place is empty, but every September 8, the streets teem with pilgrims who flock here to render homage to their patron, the Virgin of Cocharcas.

Hats and pollera skirts abound on this packed earth plain which is the main square of the village. Some farmers have dressed in their Sunday best, but most come dressed in their work clothes. Additionally there are city folk from Abancay and Andahuaylas; young laymen hand out religious stamps and sing hymns . It is mid-morning, and the main. Mass has begun.

santuario-virgen-de-cocharcas-andahuaylas

Adrián Carlos has been a quimichi all his life. He has walked across the entire country, blowing on a chirizuya flute, accompanied only by a tiny image of the virgin. Quimichis are pilgrims who visit other cities collecting money for the care of their patron virgin, following in the footsteps of Sebastián Quimichi, who in 1598 brought a replica of the Virgin of Copacabana to the poverty-stricken village of Cocharcas. “We’re like a Masonic lodge,” Adrián says. “To be chosen, you have to be devout. In the old days, the quimichis used to walk as far as Bolivia , but these days we’re limited to Cuzco and Ayacucho. We have to work and take care of our families; we can’t go so far away these days.”

The image leaves the imposing stone church. The city’s faithful surround the litter, and the Bishop of Abancay heads the procession. The farming folk walk behind, on both sides, while some look on from further away and make the sign of the cross in front of the plaster figure which is borne aloft amidst the dust and the psalms. We spot the quimichi Adrián carrying a candle, mingling with the other villagers. The gnarled pisonay tree in the square rustles its leaves, and we, mere observers of the religious fervor of the others, hope that the afternoon will provide good weather for the return trip.

Pampachiri : Manes in the wind

The final day is the longest. We are headed for Pampachiri , in the far south of Andahuaylas. Some 120 km from the province, following the road that leads to Puquio (Ayacucho) is the unassuming capital of this district, just a few minutes away from the Chicha River. It is a wild land, with gusting winds, barely inhabited by a handful of farmers and shepherds.

Pampachiri is part of a series of villages that line the banks of the Chicha River, and which are linked by a long-running history. Both Pampachiri and Pomacocha (Apurímac) as well as Soras, Larcay and Lucanas (Ayacucho) made up the Chanka Confederacy at the peak of its expansion drive. The area 440 years ago was the site of Taky Onkoy , an indigenous resistance movement against the Spanish Conquest which used song and dance forms as a way of preserving their worship of the Andean deities.

tour andahuaylas

We snatch a bite in the village and set off for the mountains. We have been told of a fabulous set of natural rock formations a three-hour horse ride away. To reach this spot, visitors have to plod up a track that has been churned into mud by the rains. It is no easy climb, but the spectacular landscape takes one’s mind off the climb.

The Chicha watershed forms part of a geological fault that divides the southern stretch of the departments of Apurímac and Ayacucho. Over the years, the torrent has carved out a beautiful valley some 15 km long, ideal for adventure sports such as trekking, rafting, climbing and parapente.

The area is home to superb woolly horses , galloping over the high Andean plains. “They all have an owner,” says Timoteo Alarcón, our guide in Pampachiri. “Each villager has some 20-30 horses. They let them roam freely across the plains and only bring them in for branding.”

To do so, one has to surround one of the foals to draw it away from the herd. It is an exciting spectacle to watch.

“There must be some 20,000 horses roaming around Pampachiri,” calculates Timoteo. “Each village owns around 1,500 horses, and there are 14 villages .” The local farmers also own llamas, sheep and cows. In these arid lands, the local economy depends on the livestock. “One can sell a good horse for some 200 or 300 soles (average USD $85). And people sell them every now and then. That’s why this area is so poor.”

  • Rock formations along the way

“It’s not far now,” promises Timoteo, but at this stage of the game, it is hard to believe him. We lost sight of the Chicha Valley a long time ago, and all we can see now are desert-like pampas . “It’s just over that hill,” our guides lie blatantly, because there is no sign of the famous rock formations. We climb one last hill, head down a trail and finally, there they are, the natural stone formations, an impressive sight .

rock formations Pampachiri

There must be hundreds of them, bizarre hunks of alkaline stone , rearing up 4-5 meters high, across an area of 3 square kilometers. The locals call them paredones, but no one seems to know how they were formed. Some believe the stone formations were created by water erosion millions of years ago.

Others study their shape and believe they could be pre-Hispanic constructions in homage to the goddess of fertility . And there are yet others who believe they could have been made by extra-terrestrials.

“This wonder is enough of an attraction to bring hundreds of visitors,” we tell Timoteo, but he does not look very convinced. He has run around the paredones since was a boy, but has never seen tourists, only a handful of road-building engineers who visited the site after being pointed the way by local farmers. But not tourists. “Do you really think they’d come?” “Of course, this place is exceptional ,” I insist, and Timoteo just stares at us, with that innocent air so typical of many Andahuaylas folk unaware of the tourist potential that their noble land features .

Editor’s note: There are now a few tour agencies offering trips to the Pampachiri rock formations in Andahuaylas.

  • 1 Understand
  • 2.2 By plane
  • 3 Get around

Andahuaylas is a city in the Southern Sierra region of Peru . It is the capital of the Andahuaylas Province in the Apurímac Region. It is known as the pradera de los celajes (Spanish for "prairie of colored clouds").

Understand [ edit ]

Andahuaylas is in the department of Apurímac . The population is estimated at 42,000 (2017). The altitude is about 3,000m above sea level. The surrounding mountains provide beautiful scenery.

Get in [ edit ]

By bus [ edit ].

There are daily buses from and to Ayacucho . The journey takes at least 10 hard hours on dust road. The views are impressive and since the bus drives very slowly due to the road conditions, you have enough time to look.

Andahualas is a very long town, spread out along the river. If you're coming from Ayacucho, don't be concerned if it drops people off in what looks like the center of town, and the bus continues beyond. You'll soon reach the bus terminal, which is actually close to the real center of town.

By plane [ edit ]

Get around [ edit ].

No big problem. Distances are small, just walk. If you need a taxi, don't pay more than S/3 ( soles ) in the city. Mototaxis (tuk-tuks) are even cheaper.

See [ edit ]

  • Sunday Market , Along the river at the east end of town . Surely one of the largest and most colorful markets in South America. With nearly all of the participants being native Quechua indigenous people, it's a photographer's dream. Every manner of fruit, vegetable, grain, livestock (rabbits, guinea pigs, horses, cows, sheep, goats, pigs), housewares, clothing (shoes, jeans, jackets, etc), snake oil potions for treating all manner of ailments. Both sides of the river for about 1/2 km. Sundays only, early morning until around 17:00.

Do [ edit ]

The Laguna de Pacucha , at 3,300m is easy to reach during the day. Take a colectivo (S/3) or a taxi. Both leave from the same place at the top of the market (ferria). The colectivos run via the village of Pucucha until the end of the laguna (40 minutes). From here, it's a 30-min walk to the ruins of Sondor from the Chanca era. Lovely landscape and great views of the mountains. If you have enough time, walk back to Pucucha on the other side of the laguna (2½ hr). It's a beautiful stroll (all flat) and the villagers are quite friendly. The village gives a good impression of campesinos 's life. But be sure to reach Pucucha before dark, otherwise it's going to be difficult to find a colectivo or taxi back to Andahuaylas.

Buy [ edit ]

Eat [ edit ].

  • Restaurant Sol de Oro , Jr. Juan A Trelles 164, very good Chinese menu (S/6) also à la carte, good breakfast.

Drink [ edit ]

Sleep [ edit ], go next [ edit ].

Luxury combis (minivans) leave for Abancay approximately six times a day for S/15. There are several companies operating this trip, all based out of the bus terminal. Don't believe them that it only takes 3½ hours - inevitably there are delays, making the trip 5 hours. Beautiful scenery through a series of hairpin turns and switchbacks.

Daily buses from and to Cusco via Abancay run by several companies, 11 hr. To Abancay, it's a dust road, from there to Cusco, the road is paved and in very good condition. Now the road is paved all the way (Jun 2015).

Curamba archaeological complex

The Curamba Archaeological Complex, also called Inca Monte, is located in the district of Kishuara, in the province of Andahuaylas, in the department of Apurimac, at about 4,500 meters above sea level. The site was discovered by the Peruvian archaeologist Raul del Mar in 1989 and would have been, according to him and the chroniclers of the Colony, a metallurgical center for the treatment of silver, the largest of its kind, which was part of the Inca culture. The location of this metallurgical center would have also responded to the purposes of Inca domination, since after the expulsion of the Chankas from the area, it would have also functioned as an Intermediate Administrative Control Center.

Sotocmachay

Sutoq Machay comes from Quechua, which translated into Spanish means "grotto of the drops" or "rain cave". The geographical characteristics of its location are pronounced towards the formation of a canyon through which the Chumbao river flows in union with the Orcconmayu river. It has its own microclimate, and as a witness of this, a series of pumpkin, cucumber, tomato and corn fields can be appreciated; likewise, trees and bushes such as the alder or lambrán (Alnus acuminata) and an interesting old growth forest of tara (Caesalpinia spinosa), as well as huarango (Acacia sp.), unka (Myrcianthes sp.), chamana (Dodonaea viscosa), among others. However, one of the greatest attractions of the site is the cave of 50 m2 and 13 m high (Sutoq Machay), from where stalactites that filter the waters and produce continuous drips and stalagmites that grow from the ground hang. These silica waters - called rumi tuquq, which translated into Spanish means "that which transforms into stone" - turn into solid what gets in the way thanks to their high content of silica and other minerals. Sutoq Machay has an area of approximately 1.5 ha between forest and water conduits, as well as the intervention of a small cemetery, located in the middle of private and communal land.

Sotoccmachay ("dripping cave", in Quechua)

Sondor Raymi

The Sondor Raymi is an iconic event in the jubilee calendar of the Apurimac region, celebrated in June. During this festivity, the beginning of the Chanka civilization is recreated at the legendary Pacucha Lagoon and the crucial battle between the Chankas and the Incas, two civilizations in conflict for the control of the fertile and strategic Apurimac Valley, located near the Sondorimac archaeological complex, is reenacted. archaeological complex of Sondor .
