Is the Airport Transit Lounge Really a Geopolitical Black Hole?

Edward Snowden has now been granted temporary asylum in Russia for one year, ending his 39-day stay in the transit lounge Moscow's Sheremetyevo Airport. The Russian government's position is that Snowden finally "entered" Russia only yesterday, when he left the terminal. Back on June 25, Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov had responded to U.S. extradition requests by saying that Swowden had not technically actually entered the country as he had "not crossed the Russian border."

Edward Snowden has now been granted temporary asylum in Russia for one year, ending his 39-day stay in the transit lounge Moscow’s Sheremetyevo Airport. The Russian government’s position is that Snowden finally "entered" Russia only yesterday, when he left the terminal. Back on June 25, Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov had responded to U.S. extradition requests by saying that Swowden had not technically actually entered the country as he had "not crossed the Russian border."

But are air passengers actually in stateless limbo until they go through passport control? Are airport lounges really aeronautical Hamsterdams where the laws of no nations apply?

Not exactly, according to Ruwantissa Abeyratne, a lawyer at the U.N.’s International Civil Aviation Organization . In an article for the Journal of Transportation Security , Abeyratne examines the Snowden case in terms of international law, in particularly the 1944 Chicago Convention on Civil Aviation , the primary treaty governing international air travel.

The treaty states that "every State has complete and exclusive sovereignty over the airspace above its territory" and that "for the purposes of this Convention, the territory of a State shall be deemed to be the land areas and territorial waters ajaecent thereto under the sovereignty, suzerainty, protection or mandate of such State."

It goes on to specify that "the laws and regulations of a contracting State as to the admission to or departure from its territory of passengers, crew or cargo of aircraft… shale be complied with by or on behalf of such passengers crew or cargo upon entrance into or departure from, or while within the territory of that State."

In Abeyratne’s view, this suggests that from the point of view of international law, "the transit lounge at the airport in Moscow is as much a part of Russia as the Kremlin." Therefore, the lounge is "within the control and jurisdiction of a State, unless the State excludes that jurisdiction in its local laws, much to its disadvantage and deficiency in logical reasoning. Immigration control does not determine a State’s territory or its jurisdic-tion over person in the territory of that State."

Taking this view, Snowden actually entered Russia on June 23, when his plane landed at the airport and has been in Russian territory, subject to Russian law.. It’s all something of a moot point as Russia likely never intended to extradite him and has now granted him legal asylum, but given that Snowden’s not the first person to find himself in this stituation, it’s probably a question worth settling.

The Best Ways to Gain Airport Lounge Access

The Best Ways to Gain Airport Lounge Access

All products featured on Condé Nast Traveler are independently selected by our editors. However, when you buy something through our retail links, we may earn an affiliate commission.

There’s no denying it: Being in an airport terminal is draining. The crowds, the often subpar food options, and the lack of adequate seating make for a tedious and uncomfortable experience.

But fortunately, most airports have lounges, where travelers can ease these woes with complimentary craft cocktails, comfy armchairs, and buffets of gourmet food. In some of the more modern spaces, there are even tranquility areas for meditating or napping, cycling and yoga rooms, and shower suites for freshening up.

There are more ways than ever to access these sanctuaries amid the airport bedlam, but each tactic is becoming more expensive and competitive as airlines and credit card companies try to solve overcrowding issues across their lounge networks.

The most infamous example is probably the recent changes Delta made to lounge access rules as part of a larger redesign of its loyalty program. To the chagrin of fliers, the airline is capping the annual number of visits credit cardholders can have to its Sky Clubs in 2025. (It’s not clear yet how many visits each credit cardholder will be allotted per year—Delta is tweaking the numbers after severe backlash from customers.) Additionally, any passenger flying in basic economy won’t be allowed in the lounges beginning in 2024.

Suffice it to say that the lounge game is getting more cutthroat. But even with ever-growing restrictions, you should be able to find a way to score a coveted spot in one of these peaceful havens—as long as you plan ahead. Here are some useful strategies for accessing airport lounges around the world, no matter where you’re flying next.

  • Fly in a premium cabin

Premium credit cards

  • Priority Pass memberships
  • Annual passes

Fly in premium cabins

The most obvious way to gain entry into an airline lounge is to buy a ticket in a premium cabin. Some airlines reserve spaces aside for business class or first class passengers only (and occasionally travelers in the upper echelons of their loyalty schemes), ensuring these lounges still feel exclusive and not overcrowded.

United Polaris lounges, for instance, only allow fliers with tickets in its long-haul business class cabin to enter the rarefied spaces, which are at six US airports and are some of the slickest lounges around. Other ultra-exclusive lounges include British Airways’ Concorde Room, Air France’s La Premiere, Cathay Pacific’s The Pier, which all limit access to first-class passengers or the very top-tier status members.

But you don’t necessarily need to splash out on the most expensive seats to enjoy a lounge: A growing number of airlines are offering access to passengers in their premium economy cabins . The perk helps further distinguish this popular fare class from the regular economy class. Scandinavian Airlines, All Nippon Airways, Japan Airlines , and LATAM all bestow complimentary lounge access to premium economy passengers across their networks of lounges. Be sure to check with your airline that you’ll have lounge access on your route before you book a premium economy ticket, as some carriers limit premium economy passengers to specific locations.

Holding the right travel credit card is a savvy way of ensuring you’ll have entry to a wide scope of airport lounges. Lounge access is now a standard—and beloved—perk on most premium reward cards, so much so that a growing number of credit card companies are launching their own concepts to entice cardmembers.

One of the best credit card options to secure airport lounge access is The Platinum Card from American Express (which carries a $695 annual fee, see rates and fee details ). This card will grant you complimentary access to the coveted Centurion Lounges, which are something of a gold standard. These high-end spaces offer travelers a glamorous respite from chaotic terminals, with many offering amenities like shower suites, spas, and tranquility areas for relaxing or napping.

There are currently 13 of these swanky lounges in the US and 14 locations in airports abroad, though the network is rapidly expanding, with new Centurions slated to open in busy hubs like Atlanta and Washington, DC (DCA), in coming months. AmEx also recently announced that a Centurion location will be opening in New Jersey’s Newark Airport Terminal A in 2026, complete with a jazz-era cocktail bar and a piano lounge with live music.

Centurion loyalists love the spaces for their focus on an upscale atmosphere and delectable food and craft cocktails that are inspired by the local cuisine. In fact, there are so many fans of the lounges that overcrowding has been a problem. To rectify the issue, AmEx tightened up the guest policy in Centurion lounges back in February 2023: Guests are now charged $50 per visit (kids two and under are $30, with proof of age); previously, cardholders were allowed to bring in two friends or family members for free. The only way to avoid those guest fees is to spend at least $75,000 on your card annually.

Platinum cardholders also have access to Delta Sky Clubs and thousands of other airport lounges through Priority Pass Select (enrollment required, terms apply). Additionally, the Platinum card comes with a raft of generous travel credits, including a $200 Uber credit (enrollment required, terms apply) and TSA PreCheck or Global Entry membership credit.

Another solid credit card option for lounge access is the Chase Sapphire Reserve. Chase has been launching its own network of lounges called Chase Sapphire Lounge by The Club. So far, two of the spaces have debuted in Hong Kong and Boston. Similar to Centurions’ spaces, Chase’s lounges feature perks like specialty cocktail bars, local cuisine like dim sum, and “relaxation areas” for lounging. Six more locations are set to open soon at the Las Vegas airport, New York-LaGuardia, Philadelphia, Phoenix, San Diego, and Washington-Dulles.

Aside from Sapphire Reserve cardholders, travelers with the J.P. Morgan Reserve card and The Ritz-Carlton Credit Card can also access the lounges. Priority Pass members get one free visit per year. Travelers with the Sapphire Reserve and J.P. Morgan Reserve cards can bring up to two guests for free, while those with the Ritz-Carlton Credit Card are allowed unlimited complimentary guests. No matter which card you have, make sure to activate your card’s complimentary Priority Pass membership in order to access the lounges.

Capital One has also been busy rolling out its own lounge products across airports. Starting in 2021, the company launched Capital One Lounge network, debuting the first location at Dallas Fort Worth. Most recently, a new location opened at Washington Dulles International Airport in September 2023. (A new Capital One Lounge at Denver International Airport is expected to open soon, but no date is available as of yet.)

Capital One says it designed the spaces to be a “modern airport oasis,” featuring luxe amenities like cycling and yoga rooms, shower suites, and a relaxation room. On the culinary side of things, there’s a focus on health-conscious cuisine that can be enjoyed on-site or taken to-go.

Access to the sleek spaces is complimentary for Capital One Venture X Rewards cardholders and up to two guests; Venture Rewards and Spark Miles for Business cardholders, meanwhile, receive a range of special entry offers.

Aside from its main lounge product, Capital One is also launching an additional culinary-focused concept called Capital One Landing. Through a partnership with celebrity chef José Andrés , the lounges will offer “top-notch food for travelers,” according to a release. Locations of the gourmet spaces are planned for LaGuardia’s Terminal B and Washington, DC’s Reagan National Airport. Specific lounge access details and entry fees will be released closer to the opening dates (which are also not yet released); however, travelers with certain Capital One cards, like the Venture Card , will be eligible for special entry rates.

And don’t forget about airline credit cards, too. They’re another sure way to score a spot in some exclusive lounges. The Delta SkyMiles Reserve American Express Card , which has an annual fee of $550 per year ( see rates and fees ), has similar benefits to the Platinum card, plus complimentary access to Centurion Lounges and Delta Sky Clubs (though it doesn’t offer Priority Pass membership). However, keep in mind the changes to lounge access Delta has been making recently; more on that below.

The Citi AAdvantage Executive World Elite Mastercard, which comes with a $595 annual fee, bestows complimentary American Airlines Admirals Club access to the cardholder, their immediate family, or two guests.

Several other premium credit cards, including the Citi Prestige and the Marriott Bonvoy Brilliant American Express cards (both have an annual fee: $495 and $650, respectively), come with a complimentary Priority Pass Select membership.

The Best Ways to Gain Airport Lounge Access

Buy a Priority Pass membership

If a premium travel card isn’t an option, consider buying a lounge membership directly with Priority Pass , which opens the door to more than 1,400 airport lounges worldwide that you can access through Priority Pass's mobile app. In the US, most participating lounges are independently operated. A handful of top business class airline lounges participate at select airports. Airlines with Priority Pass–accessible lounges in US airports include Korean Air, Air France, Lufthansa , Turkish Airlines, and British Airways.

There are three tiers of membership, and at the entry level (Priority Pass Standard) you’ll pay a $99 annual membership and then $35 per lounge visit (members can also bring a guest for $35). If you visit 10 or more lounges per year, then your sweet spot is Priority Pass Standard Plus, which has a $329 annual membership fee that includes 10 free lounge visits—translating to about $33 a pop. Beyond 10 visits, you pay $35 for each visit and $35 per guest, too. The top tier is Priority Pass Prestige, with a $469 annual fee that gets you unlimited lounge visits per year (but you’ll need to pay $35 for guest passes). This becomes a better deal than Standard Plus when you hit 14 or more lounge visits in one year.

One caveat: When lounges get very crowded, Priority Pass members can be turned away—which is a more common occurrence these days.

If you don’t have the right credit card or a Priority Pass and you’re not flying in a premium cabin, you may still be able to buy your way into a nice lounge. Nearly every large airport has spaces offering day passes that any traveler can purchase for a single visit.

Escape Lounges are a good example: They have a network of 23 lounges across the US and UK and offer day passes that cost $40 when booked 24 hours in advance, or $45 at the door. Entry fees cover food selections like Thai shrimp salad or braised short ribs with polenta, plus local craft brews, wine, and handcrafted cocktails. Expect plenty of seating and free Wi-Fi, too. AmEx Platinum and Centurion cardholders also get free entry to Escape Lounges (plus two guests), while AmEx Delta SkyMiles Reserve Card members get free access.

Another reliable option is Minute Suites , which offers small private rooms ideal for napping or working. Individual rooms are rented in 15-minute increments (with a one-hour minimum) and include a daybed, workstation, and television—in some locations, you can pay extra for a shower. Prices start at $48 for the first hour.

Some airlines also offer the opportunity to purchase day passes to some of their clubs, depending on capacity. Both United Club and Alaska Lounge accept walk-ins for day passes, as does American Airlines' Admirals Club. You must be flying with each respective airline or a carrier in their alliance—like Oneworld or Star Alliance—to buy access to their lounges. Prices generally range from $50 to $80. Many airlines are limiting the sale of lounge day passes due to overcrowding: Alaska no longer offers them at its Seattle or Anchorage hubs, and Delta discontinued the ability to purchase general day passes at its Sky Clubs several years ago. If you try to show up and buy one at the door, you could be denied if the space is filling up. Purchasing a day pass in advance of travel, rather than at the door, is highly recommended. That way your spot is secure when you land. Having that guarantee in the current travel landscape, where overcrowding is still a problem in many lounges, will provide added peace of mind when you show up at the airport.

Apps like LoungeBuddy sell advance day passes to lounges of all stripes—and also help to track whether you're eligible for entry based on factors like your airline or travel credit cards in your wallet. (In fact, a credit card is now one requirement to use LoungeBuddy's service: Since it was sold to American Express in 2019, you must be an AmEx cardholder to book through the site.)

Annual airline lounge passes

Let’s say you fly regularly on short-haul flights that don’t accrue a ton of miles. Or maybe you’ve racked up a lot of miles on Southwest or JetBlue, airlines that don’t have their own lounges. A branded airline pass provides access to the lounges of that carrier and its partners, regardless of which airline you’re flying on any given day. So you could, for instance, fly JetBlue but use American’s Admirals Club.

Be aware that airlines are continually making these memberships more expensive as they try to clamp down on the rampant overcrowding problems across most airport lounges. Average current rates range from $500 to $850 per year for an individual membership, depending on the airline and whether you have elite status. (The higher your status, the cheaper the membership becomes—Delta limits the ability to purchase memberships to Diamond, Platinum, Gold and Silver Medallion elite status fliers.)

Air Canada, Air New Zealand, Alaska Airlines, American, Delta, Hawaiian Airlines, Qantas, and United all offer options to buy annual lounge memberships.

Whether or not such membership programs end up being a deal depends on your personal circumstances and how much you fly—you’ll have to crunch the numbers and assess accordingly. As an example, an annual pass with unlimited access to Alaska lounges (as well as partner airlines) costs $500. Since a day pass costs $60, you break even when you visit an Alaska lounge or partner lounge at least eight times per year.

Transit passengers from 44 countries can now shop and use the lounges at Changi Airport

Andrew

With Singapore continuing to relax its border restrictions, it’s now possible for more and more transit passengers with travel history from ‘COVID-safe’ countries to escape the transit holding ‘pens’ and roam the shops, dining outlets and lounges during their layover at the airport.

This will hopefully enhance Changi’s attractiveness as a transit option, given that connections at other major hubs like Dubai and Hong Kong are already largely restriction-free in the transit zones.

The news also comes as Australian citizens are free to make discretionary international trips from 1st November 2021, meaning many will likely be heading to Europe and the USA to reunite with family and friends for the for the first time in 18 months.

Changi was a popular transit point for these travellers pre-COVID, so adding them to the eligibility list for a stress-free transit should encourage many to choose such a routing, another boost for Singapore Airlines.

travellers transit lounge

Transit freedom for 40 new countries

Until recently, only transit passengers with 14-day travel history to a short list of just four countries Singapore had unilaterally opened its borders to were permitted to avoid the Transit Holding Area and roam the terminal’s transit zone freely between their flights at the airport.

Category 1 Countries

🇭🇰 Hong Kong 🇲🇴 Macau

🇨🇳 Mainland China 🇹🇼 Taiwan

This list has now been significantly expanded and covers all Category 1 countries (above), plus 40 Category 2 countries and VTL countries (which are all Category 2 anyway).

Category 2 Countries

🇦🇺 Australia 🇦🇹 Austria 🇧🇭 Bahrain 🇧🇪 Belgium 🇧🇹 Bhutan 🇧🇳 Brunei 🇧🇬 Bulgaria 🇨🇦 Canada 🇭🇷 Croatia 🇨🇾 Cyprus 🇨🇿 Czech Republic 🇩🇰 Denmark 🇪🇬 Egypt 🇫🇯 Fiji 🇫🇮 Finland 🇫🇷 France 🇩🇪 Germany 🇬🇷 Greece 🇮🇸 Iceland 🇮🇪 Ireland

🇮🇹 Italy 🇯🇵 Japan 🇱🇮 Liechtenstein 🇱🇺 Luxembourg 🇲🇹 Malta 🇳🇱 Netherlands 🇳🇿 New Zealand 🇳🇴 Norway 🇵🇱 Poland 🇵🇹 Portugal 🇸🇦 Saudi Arabia 🇸🇰 Slovakia 🇰🇷 South Korea 🇪🇸 Spain 🇸🇪 Sweden 🇨🇭 Switzerland 🇹🇷 Turkey 🇬🇧 UK 🇺🇸 USA 🇻🇦 Vatican City

That means if your travel history has been wholly within any of these 44 countries in the 14 days prior to your transit through Changi, you will be able to roam the departures area just like a regular passenger departing from Singapore, prior to your onward flight to any final destination.

For example, those flying in Business Class from Sydney to Johannesburg on Singapore Airlines via Changi Airport are now eligible to shop and use the temporary SilverKris lounge during their transit.

travellers transit lounge

Obviously there are not non-stop flights to Singapore originating in all Category 2 countries (some don’t even have an airport!), but remember this is about your full 14-day travel history , not just the flight you arrived to Singapore on as part of your connecting itinerary.

For example if you had been in Estonia (Category 3) then flew to Turkey (Category 2) for a week before taking a Singapore Airlines transit flight from Istanbul to Jakarta via Changi, you would be restricted to the Transit Holding Area during your connection in Singapore.

That’s because you have a Category 3 country in your 14-day travel history, even though you arrived at Changi on a flight from a Category 2 country.

travellers transit lounge

Transits to your transit count!

Don’t make the mistake of thinking that only your original origin country and your 14-day travel history will be considered when it comes to transit freedoms at Changi.

If you’re taking a routing with multiple connections, for example London – Dubai – Singapore – Phnom Penh with Emirates and Jetstar, your transit stop on the way to Singapore will scupper you.

That’s because transit stops count towards your travel history, in Singapore’s eyes, even if you remain in the transit area throughout your connection, and the United Arab Emirates is Category 4 .

travellers transit lounge

Effectively there will be no way to escape the Transit Holding Area for any routings that bring you to Singapore on Emirates , Etihad or Qatar Airways , prior to an onward flight, until the UAE and Qatar upgrade to Singapore’s Category 2 level.

Simple transit routings from a Category 2 country via Singapore to any third country are the way to benefit here, or from a VTL flight ( if eligible ) via Singapore to a third country.

travellers transit lounge

Transit facilities ‘zone’

Transit passengers from approved countries will still not be able to leave the transit area and enter the public area of the airport or Jewel during their layover.

travellers transit lounge

They are also restricted to a designated shopping / dining zone and the B and C gates in T3 and T1 respectively. For flights departing from the A gates or D gates, passengers will then have to show their boarding cards at an access control point, as they leave this designated transit / departures zone.

Other transit requirements

All passengers transiting through Changi with 14-day travel history to Category 2, 3 and 4 countries must have a valid negative COVID-19 PCR test taken no more than 48 hours before departure of their flight to Singapore in order to be allowed to board, regardless of vaccination status.

Transit time should not exceed 48 hours.

The transit arrival process

Flights arriving from Category 1 countries and VTL designated flights arrive at the B gates in Terminal 3 and the C gates in Terminal 1.

Transit passengers arriving on these flights with 14-day travel history only in Category 1 and 2 countries then have a seamless entry into the transit ‘zone’ in either terminal, and can proceed directly to shops, dining establishments and lounges as they please.

Flights arriving from Category 2, 3 and 4 countries arrive at the A gates in Terminal 3 and the D gates in Terminal 1.

Transit passengers arriving on these flights with 14-day travel history only in Category 1 and 2 countries will then be escorted by airport staff into the transit ‘zone’ in either terminal. They can then proceed to shops, restaurants and lounges.

In all cases transit passengers with travel history to Category 3 and 4 countries, including anyone arriving on flights operating directly from those countries (e.g. Emirates from Dubai), will be issued with a wristband and escorted to the Transit Holding Area. If their connection is less than 75 minutes, they will be escorted directly to the next departure gate.

The transit departure process

Transit passengers with Category 1 and 2 travel history and those who arrived on VTL flights in transit, can simply proceed to the next departure gate from 60 minutes prior to departure time, having enjoyed freedom in the transit shopping zone.

Boarding is at the same time as regular passengers departing from Singapore.

Those who have been confined to the Transit Holding Area will be escorted in groups to the departure gate for security screening and boarding, around 75 minutes prior to departure time.

They will be the first group to board the aircraft, regardless of cabin class.

Eligible passengers transiting at Changi with Category 1 and 2 travel history can access one of the following lounges during their layover:

  • SATS Premier Lounge (24h)*
  • Ambassador Transit Lounge (3pm to 11pm)*
  • SIA SilverKris Lounge (5am to 2.30am)

* Accepts Priority Pass

Will the lounges cope?

This significant relaxation will mean many more transit passengers in the main shopping, dining and lounges section of Changi Airport, treated simply alongside those departing from Singapore once they’ve reached this area.

That’s good news for shops, bars and restaurants, more of which should now be able to justify reopening, but it does sound to us like it will put additional strain on the limited lounge facilities.

When we travelled to Germany in early September, the temporary SilverKris lounge remained relatively quiet even as passengers began to arrive for the flurry of midnight departures.

Finding a seat was certainly never an issue.

Recently though, readers have been sharing photos of much more crowded scenes at these hours, no doubt fuelled by the recent travel relaxations for quarantine-free trips, mostly to and from Europe.

SIA is currently operating around 50 inbound passenger flights to Changi each day. Only three or four are from Category 1 countries, but over 30 are from Category 2 countries.

It stands to reason that a large proportion of transit passengers on these flights will be eligible to access the main transit concourse and that a certain proportion of those will be eligible to head to the SilverKris lounge prior to their onward flight.

travellers transit lounge

With Australia removing arrival caps for returning citizens and permanent residents from 1st November 2021, in addition to allowing unrestricted outbound travel, the crowding could become even more exacerbated.

The new SilverKris lounges at Changi will help relieve the burden on the temporary facility, but these still seem someway off opening.

travellers transit lounge

An SIA spokesperson told us earlier this week that “renovation works are still ongoing, and opening plans for the new lounges have yet to be finalised” .

One potential option if the temporary SilverKris facility does begin to get too busy during the evening departure rush, and the new lounge opening still isn’t in sight, might be to reopen the T3 Marhaba lounge for KrisFlyer Elite Gold and Star Alliance Gold members.

travellers transit lounge

This had already been doubling as the temporary KrisFlyer Gold lounge prior to the pandemic, a function it was originally set to serve until the SIA lounge renovation project was completed.

Relocating these passengers back to Marhaba would ease some strain on the temporary lounge, if it comes to that.

Which airlines offer transits through Changi Airport?

At the time of writing, 14 airlines operating at Changi have approval to carry transit passengers to and from the networks of partner carriers, as shown in the following table.

* From 1st November 2021 ** From 18th December 2021

Transit Holding Areas

For those with Category 3 or 4 travel history, still not eligible to shop and dine as they please during transit at Changi, it’s an escorted march to and from one of the airport’s Transit Holding Areas in store once your touch down in the Lion City.

travellers transit lounge

Here you can purchase snacks and drinks from vending machines, or use an app for food delivery from selected airport F&B outlets.

There is also premium transit holding area for “participating airlines’ premium passengers” , including SIA First and Business Class customers and PPS Club members (note – not for KrisFlyer Elite Gold or Star Alliance Gold status holders), but by all accounts the experience is less than impressive.

Transit hotels

Those in transit through Changi with longer connections are still able to book a stay in a private room at two airport hotels, regardless of their original country of origin:

  • Aerotel (Terminal 1)
  • Ambassador Transit Hotel (Terminal 3)

travellers transit lounge

Those with travel history in Category 3 or 4 countries will be escorted to and from the transit hotel, and will not be allowed to shop or dine en-route in either direction.

Those with travel history in Category 1 or 2 countries can proceed to and from the transit hotel freely.

For longer connections, even those with lounge access may prefer this option.

Note also that the temporary SilverKris Lounge in Terminal 3 is currently closed between 2.30am and 5am each day, which may leave you wandering the terminal for three hours in the middle of the night on some connecting schedules, or having to decamp to the SATS lounge next door.

A transit hotel stay might be worth considering for connections falling between those hours.

Great news for Changi transit passengers originating in a host of ‘safer countries’, who will now be able to freely roam the transit areas in Terminals 1 and 3 at Changi Airport during their connection between flights.

This will make a connecting flight at Changi far more bearable for many journeys.

While the Transit Holding Areas offer the option to order food and drink, plus selected shopping, and eligible passengers had access to a premium waiting area, overall the concept just doesn’t sound very appealing (and reviews don’t exactly sell it!).

Now only those with Category 3 and 4 travel history will be resigned to this fate during a Singapore layover.

There’s a potential challenge for Singapore Airlines though!

With an extra 30 SIA flights per day likely to be carrying scores of eligible transit passengers, including A380s from London by November, plus Australia allowing its residents freedom to travel internationally both ways in two weeks from now, what will this mean for lounge occupancy?

travellers transit lounge

If the long-awaited revamp of at least the first of the airline’s T3 SilverKris lounges isn’t finished soon, we can see an alternative needing to be found sooner rather than later.

The most logical one? An early reopening for the nearby Marhaba lounge, to relieve the strain.

Passenger traffic at Changi Airport is still less than 5% of pre-pandemic levels. It will be very sad if the lounges cannot cope.

To be clear : does this mean passengers can start transiting at SIN under 2 separate tickets if coming from a Cat 1 or 2 counteies? For example: will I be allowed to redeem UA miles to fly ORD-ZRH-SIN on LX and then connecting to a separate SQ ticket from SIN to DPS?

No you still need to book your transit itinerary under one single ticket. Added a note to clarify 👍🏼

Hmmmm…..disappointing news (and less useful for prospective pax) but thanks for clarifying. I hope they will allow it soon as I don’t see why you are not allowed to do it? If you’re checked thru and don’t need to enter the country pick up any bag, I don’t see why they shouldn’t let us do that to access better award availability.

I have to say, at the risk of being a killjoy, this news doesn’t exactly enthuse me. For those of us travelling VTL and hoping to minimise the risk of catching COVID on our trip and being trapped overseas indefinitely, sharing the lounge with unscreened passengers from 44 countries, not all of whom will be COVID – swabbed, sounds like an unnecessary risk. Most people will be unmasked in the lounge and eating and drinking. Hello, positive pre-departure test and mandatory 14-day trip extension. It’s really worrying in my view.

Make no mistake – do away with the pre departure test for VTL flights and I would be all for it. I’m all for treating covid as endemic and opening up the airport to transit passengers is definitely a part of that. But if we’re going endemic, go all the way. Treating covid-positive travelers differently from covid-positive singaporeans when there are 3000 daily cases makes little sense if endemic is the goal.

All transit passengers through SIN require a negative pre-departure PCR test. The only exception is Cat 1 pax, but they were in the lounge already anyway.

Oh – that is great to know and a huge relief! Thank you Andrew. Your posts are making the headache of planning a pandemic era trip so much more enjoyable

I’m all for one ticket bookings except that on some routes, SQ is making it impossible due to the ‘Dynamic Pricing’ and not by Common Related fares. Take for example, their ‘new’ flight from YVR. I want to go to PEN. But SQ is pricing flights to/from PEN via SIN at DOUBLE the fare of flights to/from KUL in any direction. The only way to do this as even promoted by many travel websites is to issue a ticket from YVR to SIN or vv and then a separate ticket SIN to PEN or vv. All on SQ. But from you wrote that does not seem possible now. Wish someone in Revenue Control realises that PEN is not in Timbuktu! There are also some great fares ex-SIN to Europe on many airlines in Premium classes eg TK, EY but again you’d have to connect on a separate ticket coming from another destination will make it impossible to take advantage of this.

@GB Absolutely agree with your observation. Sounds a lot like the SG govt is sanctioning a bit of an advantage (and price gouging) by the home carrier who is the only airline to benefit from this new arrangement

MNL Airport Lounges in Terminal 4

Unfortunately, there are no lounges at Terminal 4, Manila Airport. However, if you have plenty of time before your departing flight, you can enjoy a relaxing massage at Vibes Massage which is located inside the departure lounge.

Ways to Access a Manila Airport Lounge

  • Flying Business or First Class : One of the most luxurious ways to access airport lounges at MNL is by traveling in Business or First Class with a participating airline. These premium travelers are granted complimentary access to their respective airline’s lounge. Once inside, you can unwind in plush surroundings, enjoy delectable cuisine, and take advantage of facilities like showers, workstations, and entertainment options.
  • Priority Pass Membership : If you are a frequent traveler or desire access to airport lounges beyond your ticket class, obtaining a Priority Pass membership is an excellent option. With a Priority Pass, you can access a wide network of lounges, not only at Manila International Airport but also at numerous airports worldwide. Depending on your membership level, you may have a certain number of complimentary visits per year, or you can opt for a pay-per-visit arrangement. Priority Pass lounges typically offer similar amenities to those found in premium airline lounges.
  • Dragon Pass : Similar to Priority Pass, DragonPass offers travelers the flexibility to choose from various membership levels, tailored to their travel needs. This versatile program allows you to purchase a membership that aligns with your travel frequency and preferences. Additionally, DragonPass offers the convenience of purchasing a one-time pass for a fee, providing a practical solution for occasional travelers who desire a premium pre-flight experience.
  • Credit Cards with Lounge Access : Many premium credit cards offer complimentary airport lounge access as a valuable perk. If you hold a credit card with this benefit, you can access eligible lounges at Manila International Airport without needing to fly in a premium class. Review your credit card benefits to determine if you have complimentary access and any limitations or guest allowances. Some credit cards may also offer a certain number of pay-per-visit lounge passes as part of their benefits package.

Indulging in the airport lounges at Manila International Airport can significantly improve your travel experience through one of the worlds worst airports. Whether you’re flying Business or First Class, hold a lounge membership, or possess a credit card with complimentary lounge access, there are several ways to enjoy these exclusive spaces. Serving over 88 million passengers in 2019, Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) is the second-busiest airport in the U.S.

With services to nearly 90 international destinations, it’s no wonder that LAX has 20+  lounges within the terminals. These include domestic and international carriers (such as Delta and United) and major international carriers (like Qantas and Emirates).

Our post on the best cards that give complimentary lounge access details how to access U.S. and international lounges for free, with access to many of the LAX lounges detailed below.

Lounges for most of the major international carriers are located in the International Terminal B. If you’re connecting from a domestic flight arriving at Terminals 1, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, or 8, then you will be able to remain within the secure area to connect to the International Terminal.

Terminals 1 and 3 are connected to the International Terminal via the new Delta Sky Way, so you can now walk inside the secure area without re-clearing security. Alternatively, you also have the option to ride the airside shuttle bus that connects the International Terminal to Terminals 2 and 3. Both of these options are available to passengers that are not required to collect checked luggage in between flight connections.

Terminals 4, 5, 6, 7, and 8 are connected via airside walkways so passengers can freely move between these terminals to utilize available lounges.

Hot Tip: If you’re headed to LAX soon, our helpful guide offers how to get between terminals at Los Angeles International Airport .

Does it take a lot of time and energy to go to the novohotel and back (as a transit passenger) ?

I am not familiar with the layout and am trying to decide the lounge versus the day hotel..

I have a business class ticket,

Thanks for any advice!!!

Have you considered V-Express capsule hotel right in the Terminal E? This one can be rented by the hour and it takes no time and energy to get there.

Thanks !!! I will look this up.

It sounds like I would need to leave the transit area of terminal d according to the tripadvisor reviews...

If I were in terminal E it would be easy enough..

How hard is it to get to the novohotel ? I know that they take transit passengers,,,

Transit areas of terminals D, E and F are interconnected.

travellers transit lounge

Please read up first (at least here at TA - do a simple query) on Novotel...from the things I have read, this is a pretty bleak place and not a "fun" experience at all. if it were up to me, I would choose a lounge or the on airport short-term stay V-Express Marassa mentioned...

Thanks everyone!!!

I do hate to bother you, but my family and I have a 5hr Layover in SVO from LAX in transit to BRU.

I don't want to pay close to $800 in transit Visas BUT, I am very nervous about not acquiring them. Aeroflot doesn't give me much info. Should we get the visas?

travellers transit lounge

What do you need visas for you you plan to stay in the transit area?

> I don't want to pay close to $800 in transit Visas BUT, I am very nervous about not acquiring them. Aeroflot doesn't give me much info. Should we get the visas?

Being very nervous has a negative effect on quality of life, so of course get the visas, even though Aeroflot and about a gazillion posts in this forum make it crystal clear that you don't need them if you don't leave the airport transit area. Russia is entering a recession and I am sure your generous donation of close to $800 will be appreciated.

While some have said maybe, I believe the best answer is "no", you should not count on this...

travellers transit lounge

http://www.svo.aero/en/transit/int-int/

Transit between international flights at the airport does not require a visa if carried out in less than 24 hours. If a flight change means that you'll spend more than 24 hours in the airport, you'll need a transit visa which *apparently* is available from a duty consul between 6am and 1am.

You have to apply for RUS visa in advance in the Russian Embassy stationed in your country capital......... Athens, obviously.

And if so,what should i ll visit?I am planning to be back in SVO for night sleeping!Could you recomment a comfortable place to sleep as a transit passenger at SVO?

Yes of course - it gets dark very late these days.

Sheraton Moscow Sheremetyevo Airport Hotel

You may try different things, including river cruise or O2 Lounge http://www.tripadvisor.com/Attraction_Review-g298484-d1063197-Reviews-O2_Lounge-Moscow_Central_Russia.html, for example.

YES, and in summer time it is not as exotic/ rare experience as doing the Moskva river on an ice-breaker, but still VERY iconic, highly recommended! The view to the Kremlin form the river is absolutely the best.............

Does anybody knows if there is any chance to get in at the business lounge Terminal D for a fee?? (if have no any miles card)

' class=

Yes. See here http://svo.aero/en/business-lounges/c/

There is also a VIP lounge BUT it is around $500 per person to enter http://svo.aero/en/vip/rules/

You can get further details by VIP International telephones:

Contract division: (+7 495) 788-73-57

Fax: (+7 495) 788-73-60

E-mail: [email protected]

Phone of 24 hour support:(+7 495) 981-09-09

http://www.vipint.ru

I just called SVO. They confirmed that D Terminal has several different business lounges. You can pay on the spot to enter. Prices vary depending on which one you select

On the offhand chance you have first/business class ticket, pretty sure entry is free to at least one of the general lounges (not sure about VIP)...

Review: Ambassador Transit Lounge Changi Terminal 3 (Post-COVID)

Aaron Wong

Poor quality food, no free booze, and an uncomfortable work setup are reasons enough to avoid the Ambassador Transit Lounge.

The Ambassador Transit Lounge and SATS Premier Lounge are currently the only two options at Changi Terminal 3 for those travelling in Economy or Premium Economy Class without elite status.

I visited both before my flight to Frankfurt. Here’s my take on the Ambassador Transit Lounge.

Access and Operating Hours

The Ambassador Transit Lounge in Terminal 3 is open daily from 1000 to 2200 hrs (the photo below shows 1500 to 2300 hrs, but the operating hours have since been updated). Access can be purchased at the door for S$58.85 for a 5-hour stay, and S$15 per additional hour. Separate packages for nap rooms and shower use are also available.

travellers transit lounge

Alternatively, you can access the lounge with one of the following memberships:

  • Diners Club
  • Priority Pass

Transit passengers with a 14-day travel history featuring Category I or II countries exclusively may visit the lounge during their layover.

Getting to the Lounge

travellers transit lounge

The Ambassador Transit Lounge is on the opposite end of Level 3 as the SilverKris / SATS Premier Lounge, so after you pass through immigration, make a right at the giant Louis Vuitton store and head towards the B gates.

travellers transit lounge

Take the escalator up to Level 3 and keep walking through the deserted food court until you see the entrance to the Ambassador Transit Lounge.

travellers transit lounge

I presented my Priority Pass card, and after a little paperwork, was granted admission.

Ambassador Transit Lounge reception

Unlike the open-air design of the SilverKris and SATS Premier lounges, the Ambassador Transit Lounge is more of an enclosed room. If you’re charitable, you’d call it cozy; if you’re coming from one of the other lounges, you’d call it claustrophobic.

Ambassador Transit Lounge seating

The furniture is in relatively good condition, although there isn’t a lot of variety in terms of seating configurations. For example, there’s no dining tables, which means all your eating will be at an uncomfortable knee height unless you manage to get one of the seven individual chairs with a cocktail table.

travellers transit lounge

A single Osim massage chair is available for use, although it lacks a headrest cover. Think of all the oil accumulation…

travellers transit lounge

I can’t say that the Ambassador Transit Lounge has very good work credentials either. While the Wi-Fi is fast and there’s a good number of power outlets (see below), it lacks productivity pods, and apart from the seven individual chairs with cocktail tables, there’s no area to comfortably use a laptop. Even the communal computer area isn’t a great option, since the chairs are bar stool height and unsuitable for prolonged periods of work.

travellers transit lounge

Power & Productivity

travellers transit lounge

Complimentary Wi-Fi is provided throughout the Ambassador Transit Lounge, with speeds clocking in at 23 Mbps up and 14 Mbps down. For perspective, that’s even faster than the speeds at the SilverKris & SATS Premier lounges, although the low occupancy probably had something to do with it.

There’s an abundance of universal power sockets and USB ports, located between seats and under tables.

Food & Beverage

Ambassador Transit Lounge buffet area

The Ambassador Transit Lounge’s buffet area is cordoned off due to COVID, with all F&B served by staff members. Unlike other lounges at Changi, you can’t even help yourself to a can of Coke- everything needs to be requested.

Guests enjoy a free flow of soft drinks, coffee/tea and water. Those who access the lounge through a membership programme like Priority Pass will need to pay a la carte pricing for alcohol: S$6 per glass of wine, shot of liquor or can of beer. If you pay the walk-up rate of S$58.85, a free flow of alcohol is included (as well it should!).

Ambassador Transit Lounge drinks menu

All guests, regardless of how they access the lounge, will receive one bento set from the menu below. Additional bento sets cost S$10 each.

Ambassador Transit Lounge food menu

But there’s no reason to pay for seconds, because the food isn’t great. It’s not even average. After the orders had been placed, I heard the telltale beeping of a microwave, and soon enough two clear plastic boxes were brought to our table. The food was slightly cool on the outside and molten hot on the inside.

The first option we tried was pan-fried fish with cream sauce, served with buttered rice and steamed vegetables. It was absolutely devoid of any flavor or seasoning ,and the vegetables were so soft I wondered if we’d been served the infant meal.

travellers transit lounge

The “Hainanese chicken rice” was diabolical, so much so I can’t even type it without the quotes. I mean, how can you even call this chicken rice when it’s served with fried rice and without chili?

travellers transit lounge

The chicken was barely edible with a rubbery texture, probably due to the microwave nuking it to oblivion. I certainly hope no tourist ever ordered this and went away wondering why Singaporeans are crazy about chicken rice.

Showers & Toilets

If there’s one thing the Ambassador Transit Lounge has in its favor, it’s showers. I counted at least 12 cubicles, versus just two at the SATS Premier Lounge. Those with unlimited-visit lounge passes may want to come here for a shower first, then head to the SATS Premier Lounge for a more pleasant experience.

Showers are located at the rear of the lounge, in what looks like a locker room setup.

Ambassador Transit Lounge shower area

There was no attendant to be found; but since the cubicles didn’t have a towel you’d still need to visit the front desk (showers are included for guests accessing via lounge passes, and for those paying the S$58.85 walk-up rate; otherwise it’s S$20 per head).

Ambassador Transit Lounge shower area

All the cubicles were very dimly lit, which made them feel even more gloomy. Soap and shampoo came from wall-mounted pump dispensers, with both a hand and rain shower option.

Ambassador Transit Lounge shower cubicle

Shower cubicles do not have toilets, so you’ll need to do your business elsewhere.

How does this compare to the SATS Premier Lounge?

SATS Premier Lounge Terminal 3 seating areas

It’s no contest, in my opinion. The SATS Premier Lounge comfortably beats the Ambassador Transit Lounge hands down.

Its bright and airy design is in stark contrast to the doctor’s waiting room vibe of the Ambassador, and there’s more variation in seating types, making it suitable for relaxing, dining or working. If you’re working, the six productivity pods (with two universal power outlets and three USB ports) are a godsend.

travellers transit lounge

Granted, the food at the SATS Premier Lounge isn’t great either, but it did offer a sparkling wine option when I visited- a rare sight in a contract lounge. And unlike the Ambassador Transit Lounge, all alcohol is included regardless of how you accessed the lounge.

The main Achilles’ heel of the SATS Premier Lounge is that it only has two showers, which may pose a problem once Changi traffic picks up again.

After visiting the SilverKris and SATS Premier lounges, the Ambassador Transit Lounge felt downright depressing. The claustrophobic architecture does it no favors, and the poor F&B offerings (plus absence of free booze) means there’s little to look forward to.

This is best used as a place for a quick shower, before spending your time elsewhere in the airport.

Just for completeness: Grab Platinum users can get the 5-hour pass for $25 but that likely doesn’t change a thing.

Edit: Grab saying “valued $59” isn’t even true. 2 hours only, no alcohol, lol.

In Priority Pass website, they mention Alcohol is subject to payment. So guess currently it’s free only in Sats Premier Lounge.

Pre-Covid, if you are accessing the lounge with membership cards, they’d give you two vouchers redeemable for alcholic drink.

Is Aerotel in T1 open for transit passengers now? If yes then there is totally no reason to spend anytime at the Ambassador Lounge. Anyway I used to do the Aerotel for early morning SQ departures in F or Suites, gives you time for dinner and breakfast at the private room plus you can avoid needing to wake early to head to the airport. Joys of pre-Covid days, longing for its return.

Sander

Thanks for the review. We are flying SQ Business Class in two weeks with a 3 hours layover. Think we will head directly to this lounge for a shower and then head to the Silverkris lounge to relax. Guess the 3 showers in the SK lounge will be busy in the morning now.

The best lounges at London Heathrow — and how to get inside

Clint Henderson

London's Heathrow Airport (LHR) is a large, major international airport that serves millions of passengers each year. It's currently home to four terminals and a few dozen lounges on both the departures and arrivals sides of the facility to accommodate passengers taking the many long-haul flights in and out of London.

The airport has credit card-specific lounges, airline-affiliated lounges and even some open to those with a Priority Pass membership. So, it can be hard to know which Heathrow lounges you are eligible to visit and which will be the best choice for your trip.

Don't worry: We got to the airport early in order to try as many of its lounges as possible. Hopefully, this information will help you find the best lounge at Heathrow to visit before — or after — your flight.

Best lounges at Heathrow Terminal 2

Lufthansa business and senator lounges.

travellers transit lounge

Where are the Lufthansa Business and Senator lounges?

You can find the Lufthansa Business and Senator lounges on the south side of the terminal on Level 5.

What is it like inside the Lufthansa Business and Senator lounges?

The Lufthansa Business and Senator lounges (which are really two lounges in one) are likely the first lounges you'll come to after entering Terminal 2, so they are easy to get to regardless of which gate you are departing from in this part of the airport.

This is helpful because Heathrow doesn't announce your departure gate until about 45 minutes before boarding, so it's easy to end up on the wrong side of the terminal if you aren't careful. Luckily, at the Lufthansa lounge, you haven't wasted any steps since it is near security.

travellers transit lounge

Heathrow's Lufthansa lounges are a nice size with high ceilings, windows and good lighting. They are definitely the best Heathrow lounges to visit if you want a selection of German beer, wine, pretzels, meats and sliced cheese.

The first of the two lounges you come into is the Lufthansa Business Lounge; if you are eligible for the Lufthansa Senator Lounge, you can access it via a QR code on a printed piece of paper you'll receive at check-in.

While the Lufthansa Senator Lounge did have a calmer vibe and a nice forest look on the wall, functionally, it appeared to offer similar food and beverage options than what you'll find in the Lufthansa Business Lounge.

travellers transit lounge

How to access the Lufthansa Business and Senator lounges

You can access these Lufthansa lounges when flying on a Star Alliance airline in business class or higher, when traveling on a Star Alliance airline with Star Gold status or higher, or with a United Club membership when flying on a Star Alliance airline.

You can also access this (and other) Lufthansa lounges with The Platinum Card® from American Express and/or The Centurion Card from American Express and a same-day ticket on a Lufthansa Group airline. You can also purchase access , space permitting, for about 49 British pounds ($60).

The information for the Centurion card has been collected independently by The Points Guy. The card details on this page have not been reviewed or provided by the card issuer.

Plaza Premium Lounge

travellers transit lounge

Where is the Plaza Premium Lounge?

The Plaza Premium Lounge is on Level 4 next to the terminal transfer.

What is it like inside the Plaza Premium Lounge?

This is the best lounge at Heathrow's Terminal 2 to visit if it's the only one you have access to, but otherwise, it's our least favorite of the bunch.

There's no natural light, and while there is a modest buffet and some alcohol included, there is nothing particularly exciting on offer. However, the salad bar was above average for a lounge if that's what you want.

During our visit, it was quite crowded in the sitting areas and not the cleanest and tidiest option; I found the sitting area quite sticky, and it was clearly not wiped down in recent history. Of the lounges we tried in Terminal 2, only the United lounge was as crowded as the Plaza Premium one, but United at least won in the natural light category.

travellers transit lounge

How to access the Plaza Premium Lounge

This Plaza Premium lounge had left the Priority Pass program for a few years but is now back in that program . It is also in the American Express Global Lounge Collection, so you can visit with your Amex Platinum . You can also purchase access for about 48 pounds ($60).

Air Canada Maple Leaf Lounge

travellers transit lounge

Where is the Air Canada Maple Leaf Lounge?

You can find the Maple Leaf Lounge at Heathrow in the satellite terminal at T2B.

What is it like inside the Air Canada Maple Leaf Lounge?

The Air Canada lounge was a breath of calm, fresh air compared to the United Club, though if you have access to one, there are decent odds you have access to both most of the time. There's a full bar, a panini-making machine and a small buffet.

My favorite part of the lounge was the small, mostly private nooks near the big windows that you could use to rest, read or work in peace. If you want some time away from the hustle and bustle of the terminal, head here.

travellers transit lounge

How to access the Air Canada Maple Leaf Lounge

You can access the Air Canada Maple Leaf Lounge when flying on a Star Alliance airline in business class or higher, when traveling on a Star Alliance airline with Star Gold status or higher, or with a Maple Leaf Club membership when flying on an eligible airline. One-time Maple Leaf Lounge visitor passes are also available via select Aeroplan credit cards . At times, they have been available for purchase directly from Air Canada in the "My Bookings" section of the website.

Singapore Airlines SilverKris Lounge

travellers transit lounge

Where is the Singapore Airlines SilverKris Lounge?

You can find the SilverKris Lounge near gate B36.

What is it like inside the Singapore Airlines SilverKris Lounge?

The SilverKris Lounge in Heathrow is not the most up-to-date physical space. Still, it is one of my favorites in this terminal because it can often be quiet when the other lounges are not (possibly due to opposite flight schedules heading east versus west).

There are some Asian-inspired food offerings, and even if you aren't heading to Singapore, it's (almost) always a good time for a Singapore sling cocktail.

travellers transit lounge

This lounge is right across the hall from Air Canada's Maple Leaf Lounge, so spending some time in each of those lounges can make sense if you have the time to lounge hop. Showers are also available in this lounge if you want to freshen up before your next flight.

I will say that I was disappointed that the lounge didn't have the small plates you order from a QR code the way it did during the middle of the coronavirus pandemic. You're now relegated to the self-service buffet.

travellers transit lounge

How to access the Singapore Airlines SilverKris Lounge

You can access the SilverKris Lounge when flying on a Star Alliance airline in business class or higher, when traveling on a Star Alliance airline with Star Gold status or higher, or with a United Club membership when flying on a Star Alliance airline.

United Airlines United Club

travellers transit lounge

Where is the United Airlines United Club?

You can find the United Club lounge near gate B2.

What is it like inside the United Airlines United Club?

If there is a busier lounge in this terminal, I couldn't find it. The United Club was hopping in the hours leading up to some United flights back to the U.S. It's a large space, but even if it was double the size, it still would have felt busy.

Despite having trouble finding a place to sit, the lounge had a lot going for it, with a bar, self-service soft drink cans, tempting desserts and a buffet with hot and cold options that wasn't overly impressive but could do the job in a pinch.

My favorite elements of the United Club at Heathrow were the shower rooms, which were large, plentiful and well designed for their purpose.

travellers transit lounge

How to access the United Airlines United Club

You can access the United Club when flying on a Star Alliance airline in business class or higher, when traveling on a Star Alliance airline with Star Gold status or higher, or with a United Club membership. Depending on capacity, you may also be able to use United Club one-time-use passes that come with certain credit cards, such as the United Explorer Card . Or, you could potentially purchase one-time United Club access, space permitting, for $59.

United Airlines Arrivals Lounge

travellers transit lounge

Where is the United Airlines Arrivals Lounge?

You can find the United Airlines Arrivals Lounge in the area after you clear immigration.

What is it like inside the United Airlines Arrivals Lounge?

Arrival lounges are the often overlooked but immensely valuable lounges that help you clean up and get your life together before starting your day in a new-to-you continent and time zone. At United's Arrivals Lounge at Heathrow, you can shower, drink a coffee or green smoothie and have a bite to eat before going straight to a meeting or dropping your bags at the hotel and starting to explore.

This is a much smaller lounge than the departure lounges, with a relatively tight space to sit in and a limited curated selection of offerings on the buffet, but it is well done for what it is and does the job of getting you ready for your time in London.

travellers transit lounge

How to access the United Airlines Arrivals Lounge

This is a tough lounge to access, as you must be traveling in United Polaris business class on a flight that arrives by noon on a same-day ticket and cannot bring any guests.

Best lounges at Heathrow Terminal 3

Virgin atlantic clubhouse.

travellers transit lounge

Where is the Virgin Atlantic Clubhouse?

You can find the Virgin Atlantic Clubhouse after security on Level 2.

What is it like inside the Virgin Atlantic Clubhouse?

One of our favorite lounges at Heathrow, the Virgin Atlantic Clubhouse has become so popular that the airline has recently made it much harder to access this lounge.

travellers transit lounge

There are showers, a full bar, separate sit-down dining areas, multiple quiet areas and even a small gym with several Peloton bikes, so you can work out while planespotting.

travellers transit lounge

However, the highlight for many AvGeeks is the rooftop terrace with sweeping views of the tarmac.

travellers transit lounge

When TPG was there in May, it was crowded but not uncomfortably so. Service has been excellent on multiple visits over the years, with speedy food deliveries and friendly lounge staff. It's one of my favorite spots on a layover at Terminal 3.

How to access the Virgin Atlantic Clubhouse

Unfortunately, Virgin Atlantic has recently cracked down on entrance for SkyTeam partners . You can still access the Virgin Atlantic Clubhouse when flying in Upper Class on Virgin Atlantic or in business class on a SkyTeam Alliance airline, including Delta One and Aeromexico Clase Premier.

Delta SkyMiles Diamond and Platinum Medallion members used to get into the lounge even when flying in economy, but that is no longer true. You can still get in if you are flying in Premium Select or higher; otherwise, you are asked to use the Club Aspire Lounge in Terminal 3.

travellers transit lounge

Where is the Virgin Atlantic Arrivals Lounge?

You can find the Virgin Atlantic Arrivals Lounge on the first floor once you reach the arrivals hall.

What is it like inside the Virgin Atlantic Arrivals Lounge?

The Virgin Atlantic Arrivals Lounge is a wonderful place to stop after a long overnight flight. There are several seating areas, showers and a bar. You can order whatever bites you'd like via a QR code.

On a recent visit, agents working the lounge went above and beyond to reunite me with my mobile phone after I left it behind in the customs hall at Heathrow. That was pretty incredible customer service.

You can even get clothes pressed before your big meeting. While not as big a lounge as the Clubhouse, this little lounge packs a big punch. Many travelers aren't even aware it exists, and we find it's rarely crowded.

travellers transit lounge

How to access the Virgin Atlantic Arrivals Lounge?

The lounge has similar restrictions to access as the Clubhouse. You'll need to travel in business class or premium economy to get in, even as a top-tier SkyTeam elite.

American Airlines Admirals Club and Flagship Lounge

travellers transit lounge

Where are the American Airlines Admirals Club and Flagship Lounge?

You can find both lounges after security before the gates in Lounge Area H.

What is it like inside the American Airlines Admirals Club and Flagship Lounge?

The Admirals Club is co-located with an updated Flagship Lounge at Heathrow. They sit near many other lounges and just below the Virgin Atlantic Clubhouse.

Amenities include an open bar, free Wi-Fi, showers available on a first-come, first-served basis and a self-serve food spread. You can even get table service during certain hours.

This lounge is probably one of the least compelling in Terminal 3, but it still has some decent views of the airport tarmac.

The Flagship side has seating for 120 passengers and a Champagne bar in addition to a large selection of food and drinks.

How to access the American Airlines Admirals Club and Flagship Lounge

Anyone traveling in American Airlines business class or Flagship First can access the Admirals Club if they are traveling on an American- or Oneworld-operated flight. Oneworld Sapphire or Emerald status holders — or those with AAdvantage Platinum, AAdvantage Platinum Pro, AAdvantage Executive Platinum or Concierge Key — can also access the club, even if traveling in economy class.

Finally, you can also use the club if you have an Admirals Club membership as long as you travel on a Oneworld-operated flight.

Access to the Flagship Lounge is only for those traveling in first class on a same-day international flight marketed and operated by American or a Oneworld alliance member airline.

American Express Centurion Lounge

Where is the American Express Centurion Lounge?

The Centurion Lounge is a unique spot in Terminal 3 over by the shops in Area A. You'll need to take an elevator to Level 2 for access.

travellers transit lounge

What is it like inside the American Express Centurion Lounge?

Inside, you'll find some 7,000 square feet of lounge space, along with a full bar and several seating areas. It was crowded when we were there in May, but there was enough space to grab a bite and sit at one of the communal tables for a quick meal. I liked the separate room for lactating mothers (or a quick meditation session).

This is a nice lounge and even has a few of the bells and whistles you'll find at domestic Centurion Lounges, but I didn't love the lack of windows. It felt a bit claustrophobic, so we didn't linger.

travellers transit lounge

How to access the American Express Centurion Lounge

You can enjoy the Centurion Lounge if you hold The Platinum Card® from American Express or The Business Platinum Card® from American Express . If you have the Delta SkyMiles® Reserve American Express Card or the Delta SkyMiles® Reserve Business American Express Card , you can also get access to select Centurion Lounges when flying on a Delta-marketed or -operated flight.

Where is the No1 Lounge?

The No1 Lounge is on the second floor of the F Lounge area past security and on the way to gates 13 to 22.

What is it like inside the No1 Lounge?

This is a pretty nice Priority Pass lounge, but it's often crowded; it's now asking guests to sign up ahead of time ... for a fee.

travellers transit lounge

Inside, you'll find complimentary freshly prepared food along with several brands of beer, wine, spirits and nonalcoholic and hot drinks. There is also free, fast Wi-Fi.

travellers transit lounge

There are various seating areas, including a cinema room. However, some areas had reserved signs, and it was unclear to a casual guest if those were off-limits or not.

travellers transit lounge

Unfortunately, showers and spa facilities are closed until further notice, which takes quite a bit away from the amenities.

travellers transit lounge

Also, note that the bathrooms are single stalls, and there can be a bit of a wait to use them.

travellers transit lounge

How to access the No1 Lounge

The No1 Lounge is a Priority Pass lounge, meaning you can get in with some of TPG's top travel rewards credit cards , including the Chase Sapphire Reserve .

Be aware, though, that the No1 Lounge is overwhelmed with guests who have access. We've been turned away multiple times or asked to come back. In fact, the lounge is now asking passengers to sign up ahead of time for a reserved spot. The problem is that those reservations come with a 6-pound (about $7.64) fee. That certainly takes away from the experience.

Club Aspire Lounge

travellers transit lounge

Where is the Club Aspire Lounge?

This lounge sits past security before you reach gates 1 to 42.

What is it like inside the Club Aspire Lounge?

The Club Aspire Lounge is probably the least desirable lounge in Heathrow's Terminal 3. It's always packed to the rafters — and that's if you can get in. I was turned away several times due to capacity restraints.

There is a basic buffet and free drinks but nothing that stood out as special.

travellers transit lounge

After several attempts over a few hours, we could finally visit on a May trip, but it was super crowded in the sitting areas. We had trouble finding a place to sit. Limited space and not enough natural light meant made this lounge one where we didn't want to linger.

Aspire was the most crowded of the lounges we visited in Terminal 3. Only the No1 Lounge (also in Terminal 3) was close to as busy.

How to access the Club Aspire Lounge

The Club Aspire Lounge is part of the Priority Pass program. That means you can get in if you've signed up previously via a credit card like the Amex Platinum .

On its website, Priority Pass warns that "access may be periodically restricted due to space constraints."

In order to reserve your space, we recommend you visit the website to prebook your lounge. Unfortunately, when I tried to make a booking later this month, it was "sold out." If you can book it, it will cost you 6 pounds (about $7.64). Also, entry is only for two hours unless you pay an additional 12-pound (about $15.28) fee.

British Airways Galleries Club Lounge

travellers transit lounge

Where is the British Airways Galleries Club Lounge?

Head for the Lounge F area after security to find this lounge before the gates.

What is it like inside the British Airways Galleries Club Lounge?

This is a bright and sunny lounge that's divided into sections, including a dining area with long tables and a casual bar seating area. There are also a business area so you can put your head down and work (tables handily come with charging points) and another casual seating area. Showers are available as well, though we wouldn't describe them as high-end.

Additional features include a staffed and fully stocked bar and a self-pour bar area with beer, wine and spirits at one end of the lounge. There are also the requisite coffee stations you can expect in most British Airways lounges.

travellers transit lounge

While food options have always been plentiful (albeit basic) when we've visited the lounge, some visitors have complained that turnovers to replenish stock with fresh food — particularly between breakfast and lunch — can be slow at times. This is worth noting if you plan to visit during a peak period and are hungry.

In terms of options, you'll find the usual array of pastries, cold cuts and quiche; there are also hot buffet dishes, usually consisting of pasta, curry dishes and soups. Your options aren't quite as tasty as those available in other nearby lounges (including the ones for Cathay Pacific and Qantas), but they're certainly sufficient.

travellers transit lounge

If you're planning to visit the British Airways Galleries Club Lounge, it's worth noting that it can get busy, especially during peak times, owing to the fact that it's also open to status holders and business-class passengers on other Oneworld airlines. Occasionally, this can make it tricky to find a seat, especially if you're traveling in a small group.

How to access the British Airways Galleries Club Lounge

You can gain entry to the British Airways Galleries Club Lounge if you are flying with British Airways or a Oneworld partner carrier — such as American Airlines, Cathay Pacific, Qantas or Finnair — and have either eligible status (British Airways Executive Club Silver or higher, or Oneworld Sapphire or higher) or are flying on a business-class ticket with a Oneworld partner airline.

If you are using your airline status to gain entry to the lounge, it doesn't matter what ticket class you are flying. You'll still be able to enter even if you're flying on an economy ticket.

British Airways Galleries First Lounge

travellers transit lounge

Where is the British Airways Galleries First lounge?

Head for Lounge F after security to find this lounge before the gates.

What is it like inside the British Airways Galleries First Lounge?

A relatively new revamp of the old First Dining Area, this British Airways lounge welcomes first-class passengers. If you've previously visited its immensely popular Concorde Room, you may need to somewhat measure your expectations here. It's not quite on the same level.

travellers transit lounge

Inside, you'll find a small but pleasant enough Champagne bar (serving Laurent Perrier Grand Siecle Champagne) surrounded by an array of seating; as you proceed through the lounge, you'll also find another fully stocked bar on the far end.

Handily, the lounge also has a kids play area, plus the expected business areas for those wishing to work during their visit.

travellers transit lounge

As you'd expect, the lounge has a buffet area, offering similar fare to that seen in Terminal 5's Galleries First Lounge — a mix of hot items, pastries, cold cuts and the inevitable "full English."

travellers transit lounge

The First Dining Area has an array of window seats and another fully stocked bar, along with a self-serve bar offering wines and spirits. Several booth-style seating areas are pleasant enough but aesthetically already feel somewhat dated.

Here, you can order various a la carte dishes, from standard breakfast items to burgers and salads later in the day. There are also a selection of cocktails (including during breakfast) and a fairly decent wine menu.

Note that this dining area is only open to customers traveling on British Airways in first class and to British Airways Premier cardholders.

How to access the British Airways Galleries First Lounge

There are two ways to enter the British Airways Galleries First lounge.

You can access it by flying on either a first-class ticket with British Airways or Oneworld partner airlines, such as American Airlines, Cathay Pacific, Qantas or Finnair.

Alternatively, if you hold British Airways Executive Club Gold status or Oneworld Emerald status and are flying with a Oneworld partner airline, you will be able to access the lounge regardless of flight class.

Cathay Pacific Business Class Lounge

travellers transit lounge

Where is the Cathay Pacific Business Class Lounge?

Head to Lounge C after security to find the Cathay Pacific Business Class Lounge before the gates.

travellers transit lounge

What is it like inside the Cathay Pacific Business Class Lounge?

The Cathay Pacific Business Class Lounge in Terminal 3 is certainly one of our favorite lounges to visit when passing through Heathrow.

Inside, you'll be greeted by tasteful decor (think: wood paneling and black light fixtures, vivid green tiling around the manned food station and leafy green plants scattered throughout).

travellers transit lounge

There's a mixture of comfortable booth-style seating and other tables, with charging ports readily accessible.

travellers transit lounge

The best (and brightest) area is farther back, where you'll find a separate bar and armchair-style seating around small coffee tables. There are also some more private booth-style seating areas for people working or taking calls. You'll find a TV that tends to show rolling news.

While the lounge doesn't offer table service, you can order food directly from the noodle bar near the entrance; you'll be given a buzzer to let you know when your dishes are ready.

travellers transit lounge

The food in this lounge is definitely a highlight, as per other Cathay Pacific lounges. Available dishes generally include noodles, bao and dim sum offerings. Although small in portion, they are typically quite delicious.

If you're looking for something slightly more basic, there's a small buffet area offering up cold cuts and a few other dishes during breakfast.

travellers transit lounge

Another noticeable feature of the lounge is the bathrooms, which feel much closer to a higher-end hotel than those you might find in, say, the British Airways Galleries Club Lounge. They're decorated with marble, which also runs into the shower areas. No matter when we visit, these areas always appear spotless.

How to access the Cathay Pacific Business Class Lounge

travellers transit lounge

You can enter the Cathay Pacific Business Class Lounge if you are flying with a Oneworld partner carrier — such as American Airlines, Cathay Pacific, Qantas or Finnair — and have either eligible status (Oneworld Sapphire or higher) or are flying on a business-class ticket. If you enter the lounge using eligible airline status, it does not matter what fare class you are flying.

Cathay Pacific First Class Lounge

travellers transit lounge

Where is the Cathay Pacific First Class Lounge?

To get to this lounge, make your way to Lounge C after security as if you were heading to the gates.

What is it like inside the Cathay Pacific First Class Lounge?

The Cathay Pacific First Class Lounge carries similar stylings to that seen in its business-class offering. However, it's definitely much brighter thanks to its large floor-to-ceiling windows, which also offer great runway views.

This is a smaller lounge, which is worth noting if you're traveling with multiple people who also want to visit.

In front of the windows, you'll find comfortable leather armchairs with individual footrests and side tables with charging ports. Nearby, there are also more armchairs with side tables, which might be more comfortable if you're traveling in a group.

Food options are plentiful. The pantry is a self-serve area that offers a range of sandwiches, cheeses, cold cuts, cereals and pastries earlier in the day; it features olives and hummus later on. Close by, you'll also find a self-serve bar offering beers, wines and spirits and, of course, Champagne.

travellers transit lounge

For something more substantial, you can also head to the a la carte dining area, which is decorated in the same striking green and wood paneling seen elsewhere. You can order from a mix of Eastern (noodles, dim sum, bao) and Western options (full English, eggs Benedict, Belgian waffles).

Bathrooms and showers are the same as the business-class lounge and are shared by visitors to both. Nevertheless, they're certainly classy.

All in all, the first-class lounge isn't vastly different from what is offered in the business-class lounge, but it does — probably obviously — feel more exclusive due to the a la carte dining area and its smaller size.

How to access the Cathay Pacific First Class Lounge

You can access the Cathay Pacific First Class Lounge if you fly with a Oneworld partner airline — such as American Airlines, Cathay Pacific, Qantas or Finnair — and have a business-class ticket or hold Oneworld Emerald status. In the latter instance, you can access the lounge regardless of flight class.

Qantas London Lounge

travellers transit lounge

Where is the Qantas London Lounge?

Walk to Lounge C and past security to find the Qantas London Lounge before the gates.

What is it like inside the Qantas London Lounge?

One of the nicer lounges in Heathrow's Terminal 3, the Qantas London Lounge is open from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. daily and is a great lounge to visit if you're feeling hungry, as it has an a la carte dining menu designed by Australian chef supremo Neil Perry. (We recommend the eggs Benedict if you're popping in for breakfast.)

Spread across two levels, you'll find a delightful cocktail bar upstairs, allowing you to kick back while taking in great views of Heathrow's airfield.

Along with Cathay Pacific's nearby lounge offerings, this is a TPG favorite when passing through Terminal 3 thanks to its tasty food options, speedy service and sophisticated decor.

travellers transit lounge

How to access the Qantas London Lounge

You can access the Qantas London Lounge in several ways.

You can enter if you're flying in either business or first class with Qantas, Emirates or a Oneworld alliance airline.

Access will also be given to Qantas frequent flyers holding Gold, Platinum or Platinum One status when flying with either Qantas, Emirates or a Oneworld partner.

Additionally, you can enter if you hold Sapphire or Emerald status with Oneworld and are flying with Qantas or a Oneworld airline. The lounge is also open to Emirates Skywards Gold, Platinum and iO status holders when flying with Qantas or Emirates.

You can redeem a single-use Qantas lounge pass to access the space as well. This pass is earned by being a Qantas Silver member with select cobranded credit cards that are not available in the U.S.

travellers transit lounge

This Plaza Premium Lounge sits past security near gates 1A and 1B.

Upstairs next to the far superior Qatar Airways lounge, this lounge is small and busy — you may struggle to find a seat.

Unlike the Priority Pass lounges in the other terminals, this Terminal 4 option isn't nearly as crowded due to the terminal's fewer flights. There are work pods if you need to catch up on emails or take a Zoom call; plus, there are charging points available.

The buffet options are also satisfactory. Basic beers, wines and spirits are available at no extra cost at the bar area in a room off to the side, but you will need to pay extra for anything fancy. Some lounge access is better than no lounge access, but this is not a lounge worth arriving early for.

This Plaza Premium Lounge had left the Priority Pass program for a few years but is now back. It is also in the American Express Global Lounge Collection, so you can visit with your Amex Platinum . You can also purchase access for about 48 pounds ($60).

Best lounges at Heathrow Terminal 5

Concorde room.

travellers transit lounge

Where is the Concorde Room?

The Concorde Room is past security, and you can access it through The First Wing, an exclusive check-in area for premium-cabin travelers passing through Terminal 5.

What is it like inside the Concorde Room?

British Airways' most famous and exclusive airport lounge is accessible via The First Wing at the south end of the terminal.

As the best airport lounge in Terminal 5 (and arguably Heathrow overall), it serves as a quiet and peaceful oasis of sophistication and British excellence.

Inside, there are various seating options, including at the bar, where bartenders whip up fancy cocktails to order. There's also an indoor dining area, which we unfortunately found rather gloomy. High-top tables are available, too, if you need to catch up on some work.

Our tip is to head straight for the outdoor terrace, a bright and pleasant space to wait for your flight. It is an open-air space, so it offers great views of the fleet of British Airways aircraft at the A and B gates of Terminal 5; it also provides a bird's-eye view of the sea of passengers in the airside area below.

travellers transit lounge

There were a la carte food options like eggs Benedict and a full English breakfast during our morning visit. British Airways serves Laurent-Perrier Grand Siecle Champagne in the Concorde Room (and in the first-class cabins on board), which retails at almost $200 per bottle and is one of the most expensive Champagnes served in any airport lounge worldwide.

This is undeniably a lounge you'll want to come to the airport early to experience.

travellers transit lounge

How to access the Concorde Room

The Concorde Room is reserved for guests traveling in British Airways' first class — either departing London in first or arriving in first and continuing on British Airways in any other class of service (such as on a short-haul route that does not have a first-class cabin).

You must be departing Terminal 5 to access the Concorde Room, so those passengers flying first class on British Airways or Oneworld partner airlines from Terminal 3 will not be able to access the Concorde Room. You can also access the Concorde Room by flying in other classes of service with a Concorde Room Card; however, qualifying for this requires hitting 5,000 tier points a year, which is only possible by doing a massive amount of traveling.

Bottom line

travellers transit lounge

There is an embarrassment of riches when it comes to lounges at London's Heathrow Airport. No matter which terminal you depart from, there will likely be a lounge you can enjoy (if it's not too crowded), whether you are flying in a higher class or have elite status in a particular program.

About Seattle airport lounges

Central terminal: centurion lounge and uso center, concourse a: delta sky club, united club and the club at sea, alaska airlines lounges in seattle, concourse s: british airways lounge and the club at sea, final thoughts on seattle airport lounges.

Seattle-Tacoma International Airport (more commonly known as Sea-Tac or its airport code, SEA) is among the nation’s busiest airport facilities and has been named the best airport in North America in consecutive years by air transport rating agency Skytrax.

In addition to ongoing improvements to the airport’s infrastructure, the traveler experience has been enhanced with expansions and renovations of the airport's lounges.

Here’s what you need to know about Seattle’s airport lounges, including how to gain access and what you can expect once you’re inside.

SEA is a hub for Delta Air Lines, Alaska Airlines and Horizon Air, and serves dozens of other carriers on domestic and international routes. The facility has four main concourses (A, B, C and D) that connect at the Central Terminal, as well as two satellite concourses (N and S for North and South) that are accessible only by tram.

There are 10 Seattle airport lounges, including at least one in every concourse except for B.

If you’re flying in a premium cabin, have airline elite status or hold a credit card with airport lounge access , there’s a good chance you’re eligible for complimentary admission to at least one Seattle airport lounge. If not, many lounges have day passes available for purchase.

Most lounges require you to show government-issued identification along with a same-day confirmed boarding pass. In some cases, admission is restricted to three hours before departure. All lounges in the Seattle airport offer complimentary high-speed Wi-Fi and bathrooms not accessible to the general public, as well as the other amenities listed below.

The recently renovated Central Terminal is the hub of the Seattle airport, with abundant shops, restaurants and other services close at hand.

The central location makes it convenient for departures, but it’s a bit of a haul from the more far-flung gates, so plan accordingly if you’re connecting.

There are two lounges here: one airside and one landside.

AmEx Centurion Lounge in Seattle

Located on the mezzanine level overlooking the south end of the Central Terminal, airside from security checkpoint 3.

Terms apply.

Centurion cardholders have no time restrictions. Other cardholders may enter up to three hours before a scheduled departure or up to three hours before the lounge closes (with a scheduled departure after that time). Connecting passengers may enter upon arrival.

You must present your valid, eligible AmEx card and physical government-issued ID for access.

AmEx opened this spacious lounge in February 2023, more than tripling the size of the previous location in the B concourse. Visitors can enjoy a buffet of hot and cold dishes and a coffee bar with lighter fare, a full-service premium bar, shower suites, private phone rooms and more.

Alaska Airlines offers three Seattle airport lounges near C, D and N gates.

You can take the SEA Underground tram or walk directly between the C and D concourses. The N concourse is accessible only by tram.

Alaska Lounge (C gates)

Located on the mezzanine level by gate C16 at the end of the C concourse.

Complimentary access for Alaska Lounge members and immediate family (spouse or domestic partner and children under 21) or up to two guests; American Airlines Admirals Club and Concierge Key members; first class passengers on Alaska-operated flights over 2,100 miles; first and business class passengers on international Oneworld flights over five hours; some Alaska Airlines and Oneworld elite members; and others .

Active-duty U.S. military personnel may also be eligible for complimentary or discounted access.

You can purchase Alaska Lounge or Alaska Lounge+ membership at a $100 discount if you are an MVP Elite in the airline's Mileage Plan loyalty program.

This lounge reopened in late 2022 after renovations that added 3,000 square feet, making it less prone to overcrowding during peak hours.

The space offers panoramic views of the airfield and the Olympic Mountains beyond, making it an ideal stop for planespotters. Amenities include a relatively modest hot and cold buffet, a full-service bar and a concierge desk.

Alaska Lounge (D gates)

Located airside from security checkpoint 4 near where the C and D concourses intersect.

This lounge’s proximity to the Central Terminal makes it the most convenient of the Alaska Lounges for those flying out of the A, B or S concourses. The trade off is that this location is the least scenic of the three, as it looks out on the apron between the C, D and N gates.

Though you can purchase day passes to Alaska lounges in San Francisco, Los Angeles and New York-JFK, they are not available at the Alaska Airlines lounges in Seattle.

Renovated in 2023, the dual-level space offers an expanded buffet with hot and cold options, a barista station on the main level and a full-service bar with local craft brews and West Coast wines.

Alaska Lounge (N gates)

Located on the mezzanine level of the N concourse above gates N13-18.

Serving as Alaska’s flagship lounge in Seattle, this location is the largest of the three at over 15,000 square feet. The layout has floor-to-ceiling windows and a wide variety of seating arrangements to accommodate parties of all sizes, including booths, recliners and private wingback chairs.

Amenities include a self-serve hot and cold buffet, a full-service coffee bar and a premium bar with local beers on tap, and a concierge desk for travel assistance.

» Learn more: The best credit cards for airport lounge access

The S concourse offers two lounge options for its 16 gates. You can’t get there on foot, so you’ll need to take the SEA Underground tram from the A or B concourses. Look for airport transit signs between gates A3 and A4 or at the end of Concourse B near gates B10-15.

British Airways Terraces Lounge

Located on the mezzanine level of Concourse S; look for the elevator near gate S9.

Complimentary access for first and business class passengers on British Airways and other Oneworld airlines; British Airways Executive Club Silver and Gold members; and Oneworld elite members traveling on Oneworld airlines.

Most access permits entry for one guest. Infants under age 2 may enter for free.

British Airways plans to refresh this lounge with a new bar and enhanced menu offerings. In the meantime, amenities include self-serve snacks and beverages, a modest full-service bar, shower facilities and a business center.

The lounge enjoys a view of the south end of the airfield and the Olympic Mountains beyond. The separate business and first class lounge areas have similar amenities, though the smaller first class section tends to be less crowded.

Formerly a Delta Sky Club, this space was rebranded and redecorated in 2022 to provide a second location for The Club lounges in the Seattle airport. At more than 8,000 square feet, this lounge provides seating for 165 with windows looking out over the south end of the airfield and (on a clear day) Mount Rainier.

Amenities include a modest self-serve buffet with hot and cold options, a full-service bar with signature cocktails and local craft beers, shower suites and a separate TV lounge.

While Seattle's AmEx Centurion Lounge and Delta Sky Clubs offer premium lounge experiences, all of the Seattle airport lounges provide the opportunity to relax, refresh and connect during your travels.

I swear by my AmEx card with a hefty annual fee. I get tons of travel perks and over $1,000 in credits for Uber, hotels, stores, and more.

  • As someone who travels for work, I'm always looking for ways to make travel more cost-efficient.
  • Although my  Platinum Card® from American Express charges a $695 annual fee, I find it saves me money.
  • In addition to the travel perks, my card gets me over $1,000 in credits for Uber, hotels, and more.

As a full-time, on-the-go content creator, I practically live at airports and am always looking for ways to make my travel experience easier.

From trying out the latest packing cubes to looking for flight deals, I'm all about efficiency and saving money.

That's why it may be surprising to learn that one of my biggest travel game-changers involves spending money with a travel credit card. Like the 41% of Americans with a travel card , I use mine to save money on hotels, flights, and more.

Although the $695 annual fee for my American Express Platinum Card seems steep at first glance, it's actually saved me money in the long run. And, more importantly, it's made my travels much smoother.

Here are just some of The Platinum Card® from American Express benefits I use most often.

My American Express Platinum Card gives me access to the Centurion Lounge

Because I travel frequently, lounge access is important to me. Call me bougie, but I love having a quieter space to sit down and enjoy a meal and a drink before my flight.

As a Platinum cardholder, I can access Centurion and Priority Pass lounges worldwide. Of course, this benefit is only worthwhile if you, like me, enjoy eating and drinking at airports and your home airport has a Centurion Lounge.

With airport restaurants and bars charging sky-high prices for basic food and drink, enjoying complimentary gourmet food in the Centurion Lounge is a treat.

I also get a $200 airline-fee credit

As a Platinum cardholder, I can choose a qualifying airline and enroll to receive up to $200 of statement credit for incidental airline fees each year.

This includes checked bag fees , in-flight purchases, seat assignments, and airport-lounge day passes when I pay for them using my American Express Platinum Card. While these fees might seem small, they add up quickly when traveling frequently.

The $240 digital entertainment credit can be used on things like streaming services and news sites

As a frequent traveler, I rely on digital entertainment, and luckily, my card provides $20 in statement credits each month for some of the most popular digital entertainment services after enrollment.

Peacock, Disney+, The Disney Bundle, ESPN+, Hulu, The New York Times, and The Wall Street Journal are all services that can be reimbursed if I pay for them using my Platinum card.

I always take advantage of the $200 annual hotel credit

With my American Express Platinum Card, I get a one-time $200 statement credit on a pre-paid booking with Fine Hotels + Resorts (FHR) or The Hotel Collection (THC) through American Express Travel.

I also get perks like a complimentary daily breakfast for two, room upgrades (when available), and a $100 property credit on top of the statement credit. This can generally be used at hotel restaurants or even spas, but can vary based on each property.

I use the FHR benefit each year on a special stay — this year, I stayed at the historic Royal Hawaiian on Waikiki . I received a $200 credit after paying for my room, early check-in and late checkout, free breakfasts, a room upgrade, and a property credit that I used for a nice dinner and drinks at the pool.

With my card, I can get reimbursed for Clear Plus, TSA Precheck, and/or Global Entry

In my opinion, the worst part of the airport experience is going through security. That's why I take every step possible to make things easier for myself.

With my card, I can enroll to get reimbursed for the $100 Global Entry fee, which expedites customs screenings for international arrivals in the U.S. Global Entry also includes TSA PreCheck , which makes the domestic airport-security process quicker.

I also get a $189 statement credit for CLEAR Plus, a paid membership program that uses facial recognition or fingerprints for identity verification at some airports, after enrollment.

I even get credit for Uber Eats and Saks purchases

Another perk of my credit card I can enroll in is a monthly Uber Cash benefit. Each month, $15 is deposited into my Uber account to use on rides — or my favorite, Uber Eats. I also get an extra $20 credit in December.

When I'm traveling and want to stay in, or return from a trip and don't want to hit the grocery store, I'll use the Uber benefit to get delivery using Uber Eats. Just be sure to use the benefit each month, as it doesn't roll over.

I also receive $50 in statement credit from Saks Fifth Avenue every six months after enrollment. I use this for buying gifts or small items, offsetting the cost of a larger purchase, or getting something special for an upcoming trip.

My card covers insurance for rental cars and trip delays

When I use my Platinum card, I don't spend extra money on insurance for rental cars or trip delays.

If I rent a car using my card and enroll in the program, I get secondary rental-car insurance that can cover some damages beyond what my primary insurance would.

I also have peace of mind when it comes to travel delays or interruptions.

If I book a trip with my card and the flight is delayed for more than six hours for a qualifying reason, I can get reimbursed for purchases that resulted from the delay — up to $500 per trip. This could include meals, lodging, and personal items. I hope I'll never need to use it, but it feels good to know I have it.

I find the card pays for itself in benefits

Overall, the benefits I gain from being an American Express Platinum cardholder are worth the $695 annual fee.

Because I travel so often for work, it's nice to know I have access to conveniences like lounges and expedited security programs.

Harrisburg vs Istantbul: A Tale of two cities and their airport lounged

The Turkish Airlines Business Lounge at the new Istanbul airport offers more than 70,000 square feet of restaurants, cafes, and entertainment to while away the travel hours. Joyce M. Davis

Airport lounges can be a most welcome respite for harried travelers, especially those traveling many hours overseas. And these days, with flight delays, packed planes and sky-high prices at airport restaurants, airport lounges are more desirable than ever.

But all airport lounges are not the same. The one at Harrisburg International Airport just may be among the worst in the world. And the Turkish Airlines Business Lounge in Istanbul may be among the best.

Harrisburg International Airport

Harrisburg International Airport. December 29, 2022. Dan Gleiter | [email protected]

These two airports certainly represent opposite ends of the spectrum when it comes to lounges for first class and business travelers. The differences between HIA’s lounge and the one in Istanbul’s new airport couldn’t be starker.

First, it seems anyone can just walk into what purports to be the business lounge at the Harrisburg airport, though few travelers seem to know that. On the day I entered, there was no one at the reception area, and no one checked to see if I had a business class ticket or other credential to allow entry. There were five people in lounge, and the atmosphere was modern and clean, but far from luxurious and spacious.

The HIA lounge is a fraction of the size of the two in Istanbul, which together boast almost 140,000 square feet of plush sofas, reclining sleep-chairs, work places and even sleep alcoves.

HIA has two small rooms, one with a few chairs and counters, the other a meeting space with board-room styled table and chairs. There’s a refrigerator in one end of the room with bottled water and packaged mints at the reception area. That’s it. There isn’t even a bathroom in the lounge; you have to go outside to the one in the airport.

United Airlines New Premium Lounge at Newark Liberty

Most business lounges in the United States and around the world, including at BWI and the Philadelphia airport, offer at least a quiet, inviting space with comfortable seating, as well as free food and drinks, often including wine, spirits, soda, coffee, and tea. And most offer well maintained bathrooms. Some provide spa-like showers, with toiletries and towels. That’s a real plus for international travelers emerging from a transatlantic flight.

Istanbul’s business lounge would put many around the world to shame, but few are as spartan as the one at HIA, which doesn’t even have a coffee machine.

Compare that to Istanbul’s Turkish Air Business Lounge that offers almost 70,000 square feet of coffee and drink bars, luxury shops, restaurants, cafes, play areas for kids, work hub with desks and USB ports, as well as spotless bathrooms and showers.

Harrisburg vs Istanbul: A tale of two cities and their airport lounges | Travel Views

The airport actually has both a Business Lounge for Turkish Air top-tier ticket holders and those with Star Alliance, which includes United and a myriad of other international airlines. There’s also the nearby “Miles&Smiles” Lounge, with another 70,000 square feet for travelers holding elite credit cards who are Star Alliance travelers.

These lounges are virtual cities, featuring everything from golf and flying simulators to an art gallery and a movie theatre. There’s a room with giant screens featuring videos of world-acclaimed soccer stars. And there’s even special access for people in wheelchairs.

Once inside Istanbul’s luxury village, everything is free. That’s right, you can get non-stop wine, spirits, sodas, expressos, cappuccinos, lasagna, pizza, salads, all sorts of pastries and deserts, without paying a single lira. Did I mention the baklava and Turkish coffee?

The question most travelers want to know is how to get into these places.

At most airport lounges, you have to present a boarding pass for a business or first-class ticket to enter. Some lounges accept Priority Pass, which travelers can purchase for as little as $99 per year. Be warned, though, not all lounges accept Priority Pass, and lounges that do accept it may not be in every terminal of larger airports.

United Airlines New Premium Lounge at Newark Liberty

Having a Priority Pass is not a slam dunk for access to all business lounges, domestically or internationally. And it can be confusing and frustrating trying to find what lounge in what terminal at what airport accepts Priority Pass or any of the elite credit cards for entry,

Some airport lounges allow entry to people who hold some upper-end credit cards like the American Express Platinum card. The card guarantees access to American Express’s Centurion Lounges, which provide generous amenities like free Wi-fi, food, drinks, and comfortable seating. But not every airport has a Centurion Lounge, and it could be in a terminal far, far away from where you take off.

Holders of Platinum American Express cards can gain entry into Delta’s business lounges even without business or first-class tickets, but only if they are flying Delta that day. An Amex Platinum card with an American Airlines ticket won’t cut it.

Some airlines offer one-day passes to their clubs. And if they want to skip the ticket requirements, travelers can simply buy membership into the lounge clubs. United Airlines offers club memberships between $500- $650 annually. American advertises new annual memberships between $750-$850.

If you travel a lot, the cost is worth it to access most airport lounges abroad and in the United States. Just don’t expect much at the lounge in Harrisburg.
