2022 Trek Speed Concept SLR 7: The Basics

We dig much (much) deeper into each of the features on the 2022 Trek Speed Concept SLR 7 in our extended review here , but let’s take a look at the basics you need to know about this bike. For our review, we rode the baseline SLR 7 Ultegra Di2 version, but the framesets are the same from the SLR 7 to the SLR 9 Dura-Ace. First, Trek has finally upgraded their slightly long-in-the-tooth Speed Concept line with disc brakes—which were a long time coming. They’ve also ditched the monopost aerobar riser for a two-post system and much-simplified front end that’s incredibly easy to work on (for travel, fit, or even general maintenance).

trek speed concept 2022 computer mount

The new Speed Concept also has the fascinating IsoSpeed suspension system that’s meant to remove vibrations from the road into the rider—reducing fatigue for the bike and run. Trek has also improved aerodynamics by a claimed 16 minutes over 112 miles (or 16 watts at a Kona-winning 26mph average pace— here your mileage may vary, a lot) and somehow kept the weight below 20 pounds for a size medium with all hydration and storage removed. This is no small feat, by the way.

2022 Trek Speed Concept SLR 7: What We Liked

Trek did a great job with this big Speed Concept update by simplifying where they needed to (the front end, assembly, etc.) and making some pretty interesting improvements elsewhere (the IsoSpeed suspension, the integrated tool kit cleverly housed in the downtube, monstrous, organized storage in the top tube, etc.).

trek speed concept 2022 computer mount

As such, Trek rides the fine line very well between features and real-world usability. But the thing that truly stands out on this bike is the ride itself. It’s rare to find a bike that handles intuitively—even on the first ride—cuts corners tightly, without being twitchy, and actually jumps when you stand up. Sure, killer sprinting isn’t going to win your next Ironman, but it does make riding it much more fun than some wobbly noodle. This is a bike that’s not only a blast to ride, but it’s light weight, and solid feeling—things won’t be rattling off this bike, nor do you need 100 allen wrenches of varying types from microscopic to star-shaped.

2022 Trek Speed Concept SLR 7: What Could Have Been Better

One of the biggest flashy features I was excited to try on this bike was the otherwise omnipresent IsoSpeed that Trek has been using on its various road lines for years. It all makes sense for triathletes—less vibrations mean less fatigue, less fatigue means a better ride and run, especially over long-course distances. Sadly, the unadjutable IsoSpeed only handles high-frequency road chatter as good as most well-tuned double-diamond bikes, but medium- to low-frequency bumps and jolts still hit. Technically beam bikes like the Dimond, Ventum, or Cervelo PX-Series have been using suspension, but the new Speed Concept is singular in the double-diamond world. Make it adjustable (like many other Trek bikes), and maybe it’ll be better, but otherwise the Speed Concept was a little jarring, even when compared to something like the Scott Plasma 6 or the new Quintana Roo V-PR.

There are a few other nitpicky things potential buyers should probably know, but I’ve covered that in more detail in this extended review .

trek speed concept 2022 computer mount

Conclusions

This is a great bike on a long-needed upgrade to a well-loved line. As a gear editor who has to assemble, adjust, ride, readjust, ride again lots and lots of supercomplicated superbikes, it’s a joy to quickly assemble and adjust a new bike that’s actually fast and (mostly) does what it says it will. I can’t oversell how much fun this bike is to ride—as a quick, tight-handling setup that draws similarities to most people’s (and brands’) benchmark favorite tri bike, the Cervelo P5. Both bikes are UCI-legal, still have tri-specific details, are simple in their design, but well thought out, and extremely effective in their execution. I expect most of my big complaints (above) and little complaints (this review) can easily be ironed out in future iterations, so I’d still recommend this upgrade to anyone—particularly those Trek owners who have been toiling with rim brakes, brake-caliper cowlings, and wacky front ends.

2022 Trek Speed Concept Disc

Cool Features

New Trek Speed Concept 3.0 (2022)

with shimano mechanical 105 $6,000…

(Sorry had to do it)

looks sweet!

Well… I read some of the reviews… I am not that far off… What a sweet machine tho…

Looks pretty sweet…my only “issue” is if you are tied to the aero WB on the downtube. Could limit your options in long course tri’s.

Yeah, I know it would take some work, but some sort of ‘quick fill’ valve on the bottle would seen beneficial. One-way valve that can be “fed” with a 2nd bottle (on the roll). A bit like some I have seen for front mount bottles. But it could be a challenge. Might be the place to use a “heavy mix” bottle that is supplemented with the BTA or seat mounted bottle for longer races.

hmmm… TT version only available as a frameset for $5k…Hard Pass!

As long as the aero cage mounts with traditional spacing so you can run a normal cage, it should be fine. I haven’t bothered to zoom in / investigate any further, though…

Also possible the tool carrier has threaded bosses in the aero bottle carrier portion.

Not cheap, but broadly I support manufacturer supporting fit and travel-ability. These are things that seem to tangibly affect the consumer experience. It’s also sort of the logical conclusion after all superbikes are basically incredibly aero.

I paid 6500 for my madone frame set 5 years ago and I still love that bike. I’ve gotten my moneys worth. I like this bike too. Might have to start selling my 2 tri bikes and order this. Wonder what’s the turnaround time?

Would you want the full Trek spec for TT? No disc wheel, a maximum of 54/40 chainrings, slow Bontrager tires… Only the colors are limited to one, which I understand is annoying for the customer. But TT bikes are really a Small market. Specialized and canyon also only offer the TT version in Black…

The frame set doesn’t include the cockpit.

That’s an odd decision. You still need their parts, as this is non-proprietary.

The pricing is also pretty darn high. €13,100 in Europe. The Shiv TT Disc goes for €12,000 - which includes 2 aero wheels (like the SpeedConcept) and a disc wheel, so basically >€2,000 of additional value.

Lastly, let me doubt the 16W faster at 42kph. Disc rotors are slower aerodynamically, fact. So the new frame makes up for that and then still goes 16 watts beyond that. 16 Watts aerodynamically is a lot. Going from two 50mm aero wheels to a 80mm and rear disc is often quoted as 8-12Watts at 45kph. And that’s about the biggest gain you can make from gear.

They said 16W on the current SC. But around 5 of those W is from decreased rolling resistance. Still 11W is a ton which can only lead me to believe that the previous SC was…total aerodynamic garbage??

The old bike is often quoted to be extremely fast… A few tests I’ve seen were very impressive.

5W from rolling resistance… okay. Their tires are not the greatest performers, so there is quite some room for improvement still.

I doubt the speed gains as well. I feel that pretty much every bike is the same and speed gains can be had in other areas.

But if you love your bike, you ride it more, and you’ll be faster. That’s pretty much where the speed gains come from

I called a Trek dealer and they said 300 day turnaround time. I’m not sure how accurate that is when they give a 300 generic number.

I can confirm that is what the dealer sees for lead time. That is directly pulled from the dealer order site.

That is ludicrous. Why release a product now that isn’t available for another 300 days?

For one, it seems centered around Project 1, which is essentially custom order and has mostly been 6 months or more for the orders I’ve seen over the last 3 years. So it’s not too crazy in general with the custom aspect in mind.

For another, it’s not terribly far off from the sad story we see around the industry that is still releasing new stuff, and some is not available for at lest 6 months from now.

Crappy times affecting all facets of cycling.

Trek Speed Concept SLR 9 review

The latest iteration of the legendary Speed Concept is here, and Trek says it’s the fastest bike it’s ever tested. Should you splash out? Jack Sexty takes this superbike for a spin…

trek speed concept 2022 computer mount

It’s taken over seven years for Trek to overhaul the Speed Concept, with the finished bike coming after “thousands” of computer-generated iterations and wind tunnel trips to validate what Trek says is “the fastest in its class”.

Trek tells us it experimented with ideas such as beam-shaped frames, but ultimately a more ‘traditional’ double-diamond was more structurally efficient and aero when coupled with the new lowered chainstays. The design also better accommodates new down tube storage and hydration.

It means the redesign doesn’t appear radical, but look closer and you’ll see disc brakes, a new cockpit, integrated top tube storage and the addition of Trek’s IsoSpeed system. The latter is essentially the ‘decoupling’ of the top and seat tubes to add compliance, with Trek extending this further out than on its road bikes to match a triathlete’s more aggressive position. Trek claims the Speed Concept is a huge 30% more compliant, which should leave you less fatigued for the run.

This top-end version costs a huge £12,100, so all mod cons are included, such as a power meter with the SRAM electronic groupset. The ‘cheapest’ Speed Concept with SRAM Rival is £8,100, which still gets you largely the same finishing kit with a slight weight penalty.

On the subject of weight, our size medium test bike is an impressive 8.6kg. Trek says the frameset is lighter than before, with the frame and fork optimised for disc brakes using Trek’s super light 800 Series OCLV carbon.

On a bike this expensive, we were disappointed that base bar shifters weren’t included, which is a useful addition for variable courses. It turned out that ongoing pandemic-related supply chain issues meant that Trek couldn’t source any for our test bike, but future versions will have that option. Speed Concept bikes with Shimano Di2 groupsets are already shipping with base bar shifters.

TREK SPEED CONCEPT 2022 – PRODUCT LAUNCH!

Trek Speed Concept 2022

It’s got to be Trek’s worst-ever-kept-secret! Meet the all-new Trek Speed Concept, the super-aero third-generation time trial and triathlon bike built for the exclusive pursuit of speed over distance…

…so why was the launch of this time trial bike such a badly-kept secret? We’re more used to the Trek global marketing monolith being brilliantly organised and super-strict in how their new models are developed, raced and launched to the public. What tripped them up this time? Well, as is the case with so many things, the launch of the Speed Concept was impacted by the ongoing Coronavirus pandemic.

For more than ten years the previous generations of Trek Speed Concept have been piloted by time-trialists and triathletes alike to some of the biggest victories in racing including Tour De France stage wins, World Championship medals and numerous Ironman titles. With this in mind the all-new Speed Concept was due to be launched to the public at the annual Ironman World Championships in Hawaii this year, with the odd low-key appearance beforehand under the guidance of some of the most competitive road racing time trialists from the men’s and women’s Trek Segafredo professional cycling teams. Unfortunately this plan didn’t work out with the cancelation of Ironman Hawaii for the second year in a row; factor in further delays from groupset manufacturers Shimano and the product launch was pushed even further back.

Trek Speed Concept 2022

Unusual circumstances have led to the Trek Speed Concept being hidden in plain sight for a number of months.

In the meantime however, those pro cyclists who were already discretely racing the new Speed Concept couldn’t help but to start winning on this super-aero weapon; one such example was the Dutch time trialing master Ellen Van Dijk who took another World Time Trial World Championship title, this time in Belgium during the Autumn onboard the next-gen Trek Speed Concept. Bike journos and cycling fans alike were increasingly calling out the new TT bike from Trek with some obvious visual clues and standout changes over the previous model being spotted including dramatically dropped seatstays and (inevitably) the addition of disc brakes.

Trek Speed Concept 2022

Trek Segafredo’s Ellen Van Dijk has already won a World Championship title onboard the all-new Trek Speed Concept.

This new Speed Concept is more aero than its predecessor and has spent endless hours in the wind tunnel as well as being run through numerous computational fluid dynamics tests, with Trek claiming that the newly-refined shape of this new version saves 16 watts of power or the equivalent of six minutes over the length of an Ironman bike course. The Speed Concept is not just about pure speed though; if you’re going to perform at your best over long distances then you need to stay fresh and comfortable, being able to keep fueled as quickly and efficiently as possible. Featuring more integration the Speed Concept takes elements which have been seen on other Trek models, including a hidden storage compartment in the downtube – a nice new addition that makes the bike more practical for longer races or epic training days, as well as a fully-integrated bento box that allows you to carry more mid-race snacks without any adverse aerodynamic implications.

Regardless of whether you’re a devoted time trialist or dedicated multi-sport athlete taking on an Ironman you’ll be in the saddle for an almost endless amount of time, tucked into a super-aero position in an effort to cheat the wind as efficiently as possible. Staying in the saddle for such a long time will no-doubt cause you some discomfort and with this mind the designers at Trek have taken their very successful IsoSpeed solution from other road models and have incorporated it into the Speed Concept. The IsoSpeed pivot is located at the top of the seat tube to create a comfortable ride with no impact on the bike’s overall weight or all-important aerodynamic profile.

Trek Speed Concept 2022

Eagle-eyed road-racing fans may have already spotted the new Speed Concept in action during the 2021 race season.

The all-new Trek Speed Concept is the fastest bike that Trek have ever developed and will help to make you aerodynamically-efficient and able to cut through the air while holding your speed over long distances. While speed is the main aim of this TT bike, being more comfortable for longer was another major factor in the design brief; the new integrated storage solutions add a whole new user-friendly element to the Speed Concept making the bike more practical over extremely long races or on day-long training rides which is great to see. Other headliners include the addition of disc brakes – something we would have been shocked not to have seen given their meteoric rise within road racing; the Speed Concept cockpit is super-slick and offers plenty of adjustment to allow you to refine your riding position and a choice of cutting-edge electronic groupsets mean the all-new Speed Concept is bang-up-to-date when it comes to tech.

The new Speed Concept is available to you exclusively through Trek’s Project One custom bike build programme; Project One lets you customise paint, fit and parts exactly to your liking. Speak to our team in the Wheelbase road department to begin planning your own Speed Concept.

Proper fueling = faster splits Seamless integration is critical for a fast aero bike—but it’s also critical for you. When you’re properly hydrated and nourished during your ride, you’ll not only perform better on the bike but on your run, too. We’ve developed state-of-the-art storage and fuel systems to make stayed optimally fueled as easy as possible so you can focus on racing your best.

Between-the-arms bottle Not only does having something between your arms make you faster, but the smart design of this bottle also helps you optimize your hydration and nutrition with ease. You can quickly take a sip while in full aero position thanks to the built-in straw. A silicone port makes it super simple and fast to add drink mix concentrate or water from a refill station. Available separately. Dishwasher safe.

Down tube bottle Included with every Speed Concept, the aerodynamic down tube bottle is a great place for drink mix concentrate. You can quickly pull out the bottle while you’re in the saddle and squeeze a bit into the between-the-arms bottle to achieve the right fuel ratio. Dishwasher safe.

Bento box Stay fueled without any aerodynamic penalty. The bento box is fully integrated into the top tube to promote a clean flow of air. A smart silicone top lets you easily reach in without adding drag. Inside, there are three compartments created by two removable dividers, and there’s enough space to stow nutrition for an entire race—roughly eight gels depending on how they’re packed. Plus, the whole thing can be removed and popped into the dishwasher for easy cleanup!

Hidden flat kit storage To win, you have to prepare for all variables. Technical difficulties can happen out on the course, which is why we’ve built a hidden storage compartment right into the down tube, accessible behind the down tube bottle. With the quick flip of a latch, you can access a full flat kit that pops right out with the storage compartment door. It holds CO2 and a CO2 inflator, Bontrager’s new BITS tool, and a tube
