Stone Pony & The Asbury Park Music Scene

The Stone Pony is one of the most iconic music venues in New Jersey. It has been around since 1974, and seen performances from some of the biggest names in music, including Bruce Springsteen, Bon Jovi, and many more. Even if you’re not a fan of live music, it is worth checking out this historic venue. Even better if you have a favorite music artist during their outdoor concert series.

There are plenty of restaurants serving summer staples, like ice cream and hot dogs, and high-end seafood (don't skip out on this!). You don't need to travel to Florida for a family-friendly beach boardwalk , either. One of the most lively places is the Silverball Retro Arcade, which functions as a hybrid café-museum-arcade. It's a great spot for families with kids, or anyone who loves arcade games and wants to live out some nostalgia.

As you walk down Asbury Park's boardwalk, you'll encounter artistic murals via the Wooden Walls Mural Project.  This initiative has garnered international attention in publications like The Guardian and The New York Times, and includes artists like Shephard Fairey and Dylan Egon. If live art is more your scene, there's the historic Paramount Theatre and Convention Hall, which has seen performances from famous musicians, such as Elton John, Stevie Wonder, and The Ramones. This East Coast Seaside Destination Is Home to Beautiful Beaches, a Great Music Scene, and Vintage Boutiques

Asbury Park might be the coolest place on the Jersey Shore — here's why.

This summer, head to a destination with a bit more rock 'n' roll.

Long known as a destination for music history buffs and architecture fans, Asbury Park has become an unlikely cultural hub on the Jersey Shore.

The city has been growing in popularity since the '90s, but it has exploded as must-visit jaunt from New York City (about a 70-minute drive away) within the last decade.

"Asbury Park isn't just for us locals anymore," Tina Kerekes, a local designer and manager at the Danny Clinch Transparent Gallery , told Travel + Leisure . "We're attracting people from all over the world now."

An average stroll through town could reveal a drag queen bingo party or an impromptu drum circle on the boardwalk. Asbury Park delights in the unexpected.

"This town is about acceptance," Rachel Ana Dobken , a local musician, told T+L. "People here are so accepting of new art and music, anything that's eclectic and unique."

Asbury Park is also about creativity. It seems like every single local has their own pet project: a newspaper editor operates the popular coffee shop, drag balls are run by local restaurant managers, and musicians own vintage clothing boutiques. Meanwhile, the smell of the beach hangs on every block and swimsuits are acceptable attire almost everywhere you go.

If it's possible for a destination to have a je ne sais quoi , Asbury Park might be the East Coast's top contender.

Asbury Park History

Asbury Park was, at its inception, a carnival town. In the later part of the 19th century, people came for its newfangled merry-go-round and boardwalk . By 1930, the Convention Hall and Paramount Theatre began gathering crowds for live entertainment. It then quickly became known as a center for culture, which is still very much the spirit today.

Pay homage to the days of yore by flipping through time at the Silverball Museum . The boardwalk staple has more than 600 working pinball machines that date back to the 1950s. Spend an hour enjoying an interactive history lesson or play all you can flip on the machines.

Asbury Park Music Scene

Music is the pulse of Asbury Park. There's an impressive amount of live music options for a 1.6-square-mile city (at least 10 official venues, plus almost every bar and restaurant around).

To get a real sense of the scene, head to The Stone Pony . The legendary venue is most famous for launching the careers of Bruce Springsteen and Jon Bon Jovi. Or, you could visit the nearby Wonder Bar ("Bruce hangs out there on a Sunday," one local advised). But when locals want to check out free music, they're more likely to be found at the Asbury Park Yacht Club , Langosta Lounge , or Danny Clinch Transparent Gallery.

"You can't find parking here on the weekends anymore," said Kerekes. "We know we're creating history. A lot of these musicians are up-and-coming. You know they're going places. You can feel it. You can see it."

The Asbury Lanes music venue became a part of the Asbury Park resurgence when it reopened in 2019. In the early 2000s, the performance space was legendary for the DIY and punk scenes, with a vintage bowling alley in the back. Although it has gotten a high-tech upgrade from its early days, there are still hints of the past. You'll find stickers and posters from historical shows plastered above benches from the 1960s bowling alley.

And for one weekend every September, Sea Hear Now — a music, art, and surf festival — takes over the beach. The lineup is always an impressive mix of local up-and-comers alongside acts like Stevie Nicks, Green Day, and Courtney Barnett.

Asbury Park Art Offerings

Art in Asbury Park exists on the street, along the boardwalk, and in gallery spaces. The Wooden Walls Mural Project festoons the empty walls of the boardwalk with work from internationally recognized artists. Meanwhile, places like Art629 , Parlor Gallery , and Whitepoint curate contemporary work from local artists and others around the world.

Where to Shop in Asbury Park

Asbury Park has long been known as the unofficial gay capital of New Jersey. The influence of the gay community is so strong here that it's credited as being among the first to kickstart Asbury Park's revival. (The first Asbury Pride parade was held in 1970.)

Get a peek into the LGBTQ+ scene at weekly drag bingo at Paradise . Nearby, Georgie's , which has been in operation since 1999, bills itself as a "gay 'Cheers.'"

Best Asbury Park Beaches

For sheer accessibility, you can't beat Asbury Park Beach . In less than a minute, you can go from sipping margaritas on a boardwalk patio to splashing in the waves. But it's this very convenience that can cause the beach to get crowded during the summer. With that in mind, although there's more than one mile of sand, you'll want to arrive early and stake your claim.

From Memorial Day to Labor Day, visitors must pay a daily beach fee. Passes are $6 on weekdays and $9 on weekends and holidays for visitors ages 13 and older. Anyone younger than 12 can enjoy the beach for free.

Four-legged friends are almost universally adored in Asbury Park. But there's only one place they're allowed on the sand: the Asbury Park Dog Beach. The dog-friendly beach permits pups to run off leash, as long as owners remain vigilant. You'll find the small enclave on the northernmost part of Asbury Park's coast. Enter through Fisherman's Parking Lot and follow the sound of barking.

While surfing is a major part of Asbury Park culture, you won't find too many locals hitting the waves at their town's main beach. Many tend to head to Avon, the next beach south, where the waters tend to be a bit less crowded, but the surf is just as good.

Best Asbury Park Restaurants

With all the culture on its streets, it only makes sense that Asbury Park also has a thriving culinary scene. Within its borders, you'll find everything from standard boardwalk fare to elevated Ethiopian cuisine.

If you're looking to dig into the local food offerings, start at Cardinal Provisions , which is a favorite, particularly for weekend brunch, when people pour in for chicken and waffles, cacio e pepe scrambled eggs, and strawberry rhubarb French toast.

When you start to get peckish on the beach, head to Pop's Garage for tacos. Located directly on the boardwalk, this colorful and sustainable Mexican eatery is the closest you'll get to a tropical getaway on the Jersey Shore.

Frank's Deli is a bit off the beaten path, but when you're craving some old-school Americana vibes, it's worth the trek across town. This is the type of Anthony-Bourdain-ate-here greasy spoon that feels like a perfect relic from a bygone era. Make like a local and order one of Frank's famous "overstuffed" sandwiches, which certainly live up to their name. And like all the best diners, this one is cash only.

When the occasion calls for a celebration, hit up Pascal & Sabine , a Parisian-style brasserie. The space's sleek, dark walls deliver an elevated ambience, and its menu — with options like caviar, steak tartare, and escargot — packs a sophisticated European punch.

In the heart of downtown, you'll find The Bonney Read , one of Asbury Park's most popular seafood restaurants (which is saying something in a seaside town). Go for the raw bar, stay for the rum flights. Just be sure you know how to get back to your hotel.

Best Asbury Park Hotels

Locals who have been around for decades may credit The Asbury as the place that kicked off the destination's most recent wave of tourism. Located just a few blocks from the beach, the 110-room hotel has become a visible presence in the town, and it's perhaps its social programming that has brought it to prominence.

"The Asbury was always about creating a central meeting place," David Bowd, part owner of The Asbury, told T+L. "It was always intended to be approachable and affordable. People feel very comfortable in it."

On a typical visit, you're likely to find locals and visitors gathering in the lobby for nightly live music, on the rooftop for artisanal cocktails, or around the pool when temperatures start to climb.

If you're looking for glamour right on the beach, opt for the Asbury Ocean Club , which opened in 2019, welcoming a new type of visitor to the destination. Most of the hotel's 54 rooms are located on the fourth floor of a 17-story beachfront tower (the rest of the building is made of up fancy condominiums). Hotel guests get access to the building's luxe amenities, including a rooftop pool, suite-style rooms with floor-to-ceiling windows, and an ocean-view fitness center with complimentary yoga classes.

Asbury Park, a beachfront city in Monmouth County, New Jersey, features one of the best beaches and entertainment in the state. The Beaches At Asbury Park

Asbury Park Beach is the most convenient beach in the area . You can go from enjoying margaritas on a patio along the boardwalk in less than a minute to playing in the surf. Convenience, however, can lead to overcrowding at the beach in the height of summer. Even though there is more than a mile of beach to spread out on, you should get there early to claim your spot. There is a daily beach fee that all tourists must pay during Memorial Day and Labor Day holidays. A Day Pass for visitors over 13 costs $6 during the week but $9 on weekends and holidays. Children under the age of 12 are not charged an admission fee to the beach.

The Asbury Park Dog Beach is the only beach in the area where dogs are allowed to run free, but their owners still need to keep a close eye on them. There is a tiny community at the northernmost tip of the Asbury Park coastline. Despite being deeply rooted in the Asbury Park psyche, few locals frequent the town's primary beach. Avon, the next beach to the south, is famous for its good surf and less crowded waters.

Founded by a broom manufacturer in 1871, Asbury Park ’s 150-year-old history is, well, sweeping — rhythmic, persistent, powered by purposeful hands. An attraction for entrepreneurs, entertainers and vacationers from its earliest days, Asbury Park today personifies the saying, “the more things change, the more they stay the same,” as waves of businesses, bands and beachgoers continue to roll in on this 1.6-square-mile sliver of the Shore.  

Like the sand on its beaches, Asbury Park’s got grit — but these days, “gritty” won’t likely be the first word that comes to mind with a visit to what is likely the coolest hot spot along our coastline. And while it may be the one Shore town that screams “Jersey!” loudest, it’s also a town whose embrace stretches widest — welcoming, inviting and wrapping its arms around the diversity of all who enter.  

If it’s been a while since you took Exit 102 and headed down Asbury Avenue, let us set the stage with a look at what you’ll find if you set aside 48 hours for Asbury Park.

Experience the Icons of Asbury  

The list of legends and landmarks synonymous with Asbury Park is long. Call it the Jersey Shore Sound or the Sound of Asbury Park, but everyone knows that Southside Johnny and the Asbury Jukes invented it. And how was it possible to get through three introductory paragraphs about Asbury Park without even mentioning Bruce Springsteen or Bon Jovi? Great music performed live by great talents is at the heart of Asbury Park, and the beat goes on at these classic venues.  

Convention Hall , the  Paramount Theatre  and the Grand Arcade  

The architecturally grand Convention Hall extends majestically over the beach from its location on the boardwalk. You can’t miss it, and you must see it. In concert with the adjacent Paramount Theatre , the halls have played host to such musical legends as Sinatra, Springsteen, Bon Jovi and even Elvis (Costello, that is). Connecting the two venues is the Grand Arcade, with a soaring 40-foot ceiling, and this cavernous boardwalk pass-through is home to enchanting boutique shopping, ocean-view restaurants and public events.

The Stone Pony  

A bedrock of Asbury’s rock ‘n’ roll music scene since 1974, and where Springsteen, Southside Johnny and Steven Van Zandt have reigned supreme, The Stone Pony has hosted an endless list of bands over five decades. The Summer Stage , an essential Jersey Shore series of outdoor concerts, will resume performances as restrictions allow.

The Best of the Beach and the Boards  

The beach is where it’s at in Asbury Park, beckoning you to lounge in a low-bottomed chair or stretch out on a blanket between dips in the ocean and searches for seashells along the water’s edge — all in the shadow of a legendary boardwalk.  

The promenade that is Asbury’s boardwalk is a collection of fabulous food, funky bars, eclectic boutiques and fun, family attractions.

Far from the standard Jersey Shore fare of funnel cakes and fried Oreos, this boardwalk lets you taste sushi by the sea at  Langosta Lounge , grab a bulgogi burrito at  MOGO Korean Fusion Tacos , or choose the chorizo and beef sliders at  Cubacan . Of course, there also are great spots for burgers and cheesesteaks and sausage to satisfy those who want to stick with the delicious tradition.  

Retro fun awaits all who pay the price of admission to the  Silverball Museum Arcade , home to a rotation of 600 pinball and video games from the past. It’s a flippin’ blast.  

Stroll and behold the stunning murals of the  Wooden Walls Project , a public art initiative started in 2015 to bring art out of the galleries and onto the streets. Pops of colorful creations appear throughout town, but wooden walls erected to shore up structures along the boardwalk proved perfect canvases for the eye-catching works of art.

Find a Place to (Asbury) Park Yourself  

Even if you live within a reasonable driving distance, it’s not much of a getaway if you’re spending too much time on the “getaway” part. You need a place to stay.  

The Berkeley Oceanfront Hotel  —  1401 Ocean Ave.  

Overlooking the Atlantic Ocean and just steps from the boardwalk and beach, the Berkeley Hotel is a 100-year-old classic where Victorian architecture houses modern luxury and style. With 257 Art Deco-styled guest rooms and suites, an outdoor pool and Tiki bar, indoor cocktail lounge and an onsite breakfast café, this landmark also is pet friendly.   

Hotel Tides  —   408 7th Ave.  

A humbler historic hotel, the 20-room boutique Hotel Tides  is a few blocks off the beach. From its welcoming front porch to the bar and lounge, to the outdoor pool and full-service restaurant, the Hotel Tides has kept much of the past alive in its décor while offering modern amenities to its guests.

The Asbury  —   210 5th Ave.  

Opened in 2016 after reconfiguring an old Salvation Army building, The Asbury , two blocks from the beach and boardwalk, is a chic, six-floor social centerpiece — including the rooftop. Its 110 rooms are simply Scandinavian, with a wide range of sizes to accommodate a wide range of travelers. The versatile, eight-bunk Octo room, for example, can work for the Brady Bunch or for a bachelorette party. The hotel revived the Asbury Lanes , it hosts rooftop movie nights, and its rooftop lounge has a dress code. And yes, it has an amenity-rich pool with cabanas, lounge chairs, fire pit, beer and wine bar, and a food truck.   

The Asbury Ocean Club  —   1101 Ocean Ave.  

Part residence, part 54-room boutique hotel, this uber-luxurious, oceanfront complex leaves no elegant stone unturned. All-king rooms, from standard to penthouse, have soaring ceilings, abundant light and thoughtful amenities. Featuring a pool and garden terrace, spa and wellness center, reservations-only fine dining and a retreat-inspired lounge, the Asbury Ocean Club is refined and relaxed.

See What’s Cooking On and Off Cookman  

Now that you’re all checked in, it’s time to check out the rest of Asbury Park — and there’s plenty to explore beyond the Shore. Sylvia Sylvia-Cioffi, executive director of the Asbury Park Chamber of Commerce, couldn’t be prouder of the Cookman Avenue corridor’s transformation over the decades.  

“Our downtown is 1.4 square miles with a different personality everywhere you look,” Sylvia-Cioffi said. “Our business community is trendsetting and knowledgeable, and our streets are lined with independently owned businesses, not chains.”  

She’s right — you won’t find a Starbucks, but you will find the  Asbury Park Roastery , its coffee shop in town along with two satellite cafes on the boardwalk.

April through November you’ll also find a “walking mall” model downtown, with Cookman Avenue and other streets closed to vehicular traffic, allowing greater space for outdoor dining, pop-up sidewalk vendors, and room for folks to stroll, shop and stop to eat.  

The community’s eclectic retailers and artisans include  Heaven Gallery , where you’ll find the owner’s curated collection of unusual clothing, jewelry and accessories from around the world; and  Hot Sand ,  a walk-in, blow-your-own-glass-art studio and gallery of glass art for purchase.  

Hungry? Start your day with a delightful, handcrafted donut from  Purple Glaze , serving up simple and fancy-filled donut varieties like banana crème pie and PB&J. Catch the sunset from the rooftop of  Asbury   Festhalle & Biergarten  while enjoying one of more than 39 premium draft beers with a side of wiener schnitzel.

Mogo’s is the BEST!!!

Perhaps if just one of these articles would mention the culture and businesses (including several food establishments far better and more “authentic” than many in this article) of the West Side we could get some of the tourist money moving in that direction.

How bout and article on the history of the West other than the unrest in the one or two years. My Grandfather own the Victory restaurant on Springwood Ave .One of many black owned businesses on a historic part of Asbury Park. Music started there!! Not the Stone pony. Ask Bruce!! Bangs Ave school where Whites were on one side blacks on the other. I was born in Neptune in 59. Seen the good and the bad. So happy about the resurgence. Please keep telling the whole story.

Asbury Park is a dump. Jeez. You must have written this article in a vacuum dated 1800.

Was at Asbury Hotel last week and area including boardwalk just plain smelled of age and a dying city. And yet 2 miles south is a clean Ocean Grove and further south more vibrant and kept beach towns. IMHO. I’m a Jersey native.

No asbury is not a dump..your straight lying!!!!!! Asbury Hotel is the old Senior Citizens Veterans Building!! Great pick dummy! Try The Colonial next! Many views, local shops, very close 2 nature alll the bugs u could ever see in one spot..

Oh and its haunted ! U knew better.. tsss tsss

It seems to me there’s a Westside there’s no SouthSide in aAsbury Park … Tillie was on the Palace Amusments and I think originally it was from Cobey Island ..,, It was the Student Prince and Mrs Jays long before the Stone Pony ….Madame Marie had a small store in the 3 rd Ave Pavilion between BMS Amusments And Spike Mustos Sandwich Shop .. There was Mr Peanut , Zad the portrait painter in the Casino Lobby .. There was the Monte Carlo Pool , Asbury was great long before the Stone Pony ..,. Who remembers driving the circut. And The Big Swan Boat.

Don’t forget, but when talking about music in Asbury, you have to include for The Saint on Main and Monroe. Since 1994, they have been presenting live original music, bringing in musicians from all around the world to Asbury Park, 52 weeks a year.

Asbury Park was fabulous! Attended a wedding at Porta . A wonderful venue with amazing food and courteous, attentive service. Stayed at the Asbury. The staff could not have been better. Helpful, efficient, friendly! The boardwalk was a treat! We had beautiful weather. The whole event was perfect from beginning to end!

A Jersey native that knows Asbury very well. It has come a long, long way, but is still transitioning. Article seems to position Asbury as 100% back to tourist ready prominence and that is not the case. Boardwalk still needs time.

I love the everything goes freak show that is Asbury! The music vibe is raw and wonderful. As Springsteen said in a rather tongue in cheek moment l, and he included himself in this, “everything here is tinged with a little bit of fraud.”. I e been coming here the last 5 years or so and keep coming back. I love it.

Parking is 50 00 a day on ocean block at 3 lots over price

A Perfect Weekend in Asbury Park, N.J.

An hourlong drive from Manhattan offers a seaside idyll for rockers, diners, surfers, art patrons and fans of just relaxing on the beach. Here’s how to make the most of a weekend there.

To call Asbury Park a secret would betray its tumultuous and storied history: A wellspring of American music, tucked around the swamps of Jersey . A home to national icons. A vibrant L.G.B.T.Q. community. A city that bears the scars of the civil rights movement, blighted for decades by mismanagement and mistrust, that’s now in the midst of a soaring recovery fueled by the very soul that gave Asbury its reason for being: music.

Now Asbury Park is called “the Coolest Small Town in America” by travel magazines and is regularly placed on “top beach destinations” lists.

Yet just an hourlong drive from Manhattan without traffic, Asbury Park still feels like a discovery, a New Orleans-meets-Dogtown city by the sea that’s ignored by the bumper-to-bumper traffic of the Long Island Expressway out to the Hamptons, the overcrowded ferries shuttling day-trippers to Rockaway Beach or the snarled causeway lined with cars to Long Beach Island.

Ignored, of course, at their own loss. Because as I’ve learned since my first trip to Asbury 25 years ago, to catch the Warped Tour with my dad in the lot behind the storied Stone Pony , Asbury Park offers a Jersey Shore idyll for all comers: the rockers, diners, surfers, art patrons and just fans of a simple relaxing day on the beach. I’ve been keeping a rotating and updated list of suggestions for friends and family for years now to help them have the perfect summer weekend. Now I’ll share it with Times readers, too.

A beach weekend

You’re here for the beach, so let’s start with that. Most important: This is the Jersey Shore, home to paid beach access and draconian parking rules . Asbury Park, fortunately, has ample parking near the beach, and imposes no time limit on metered parking, though it will run you $3 an hour from 8 a.m. to 2 a.m. with no discounts on a full day rate. Then an all-day beach pass costs $6 per person on weekdays, and climbs to $9 on the weekend.

OK, time to pick a jetty. Surfers, head north, as the only summertime surf beach during lifeguard hours is off Eighth Avenue and Deal Lake Drive (of course, no restrictions on dawn patrol or sunset sessions). Non-surfers eager to shred can book lessons at the surf beach through Summertime Surf . For the similarly active but terra firma crowd, make for the beaches near Sixth Avenue and look for the volleyball nets to join a pickup game or host your own.

The northern beaches are also home to the “dog beach,” a necessity in a city where bars build puppy playgrounds, host dog-friendly “Yappy Hours ” and the Mardi Gras parade centers on costumed pooches ; it’s not uncommon to see dogs in party hats trotting along the boardwalk following a birthday shindig. So, in the early mornings and every night after 6:30 p.m., the beach near Deal Lake is open to dogs (and their owners).

For those just looking to sit on the beach and relax, pick up a beach read at the Asbury Book Cooperative , a unique and locally owned bookstore that operates as a co-op, with members given voting power over decisions and discounts on new books.

The Asbury Park boardwalk , storied as it may be through its appearances in Springsteen songs and Sopranos scenes, is not the kind of amusement park-on-the-water that many other Shore towns claim; more restaurants and bars line the planks here. But there’s still some traditional beach fun, including the Asbury Splash Park , where sprinklers, hoses and other water-emitting devices line the lot for children. And the Silverball Pinball Museum , an arcade that doubles as a museum of historic pinball machines dating back to the 1950s, offers an opportunity to join the wizards down on Pinball Way.

A music weekend

Every September, Asbury Park is the site of SeaHearNow, a nationally recognized, two-day festival , but on any given weekend, it can feel like its own music festival, as anywhere from a brewery to a bookstore to a coffee shop to a hotel lobby sometimes plays host to live music.

Start off in the afternoon at the Transparent Clinch Gallery , where local artists play on an intimate stage beneath the gaze of countless music legends photographed by the renowned photographer Danny Clinch. A Jersey Shore native, Mr. Clinch has photographed Bruce Springsteen, the Foo Fighters, Tupac and more, and his gallery on the eastern end of the Asbury Hotel is packed with portraits of iconic artists, including a (nearly) life-size Mr. Springsteen leaning against a muscle car that visitors can pose with for a picture. Mr. Clinch will often join the bands onstage with his harmonica, holding down a recent blues duet with the local Seaside band Johnny Nameless.

From there, walk downtown to the House of Independents , a large sunken venue that can pack 500 fans in for a Jersey punk showcase, a more reflective, indie marquee night or simply put a D.J. onstage and have a dance party. Close the night by heading a couple blocks down to the Saint , a venue that feels unchanged since it opened its doors in 1994, for a mix of local artists and nationally touring bands, that are packed into a sliver of a space that could easily double as a punky dive bar.

The second day of our self-styled festival kicks off with brunch at R Bar, a new standout New Orleans-themed restaurant on Main Street that hosts a brass brunch on Saturday and a blues brunch on Sunday in the backyard garden. Grab a Kane Head High on draft and some blue crab beignets and settle in for a perfect Jersey-meets-New-Orleans combo.

The main event is down Second Avenue, where the siren song from the legendary Stone Pony is still echoing down the boardwalk, 48 years since it first opened its doors , and Mr. Springsteen still shows up on occasion . The venue’s Summer Stage, housed in the back lot, hosts major national acts from Phil Lesh to Jason Isbell to the Bouncing Souls, while the aftershow might be inside the Pony, where local bands grace the same stage that Mr. Springsteen, Stevie Van Zandt and Southside Johnny regularly called home.

If your ears aren’t ringing yet, head back on the boardwalk at the Asbury Park Yacht Club , which often has late night concerts going past midnight on the weekends, and sweaty dancers spilling out into the salt air.

A food tour, Jersey style

Asbury’s many music venues may only be eclipsed by the booming restaurant scene. There’s a lot to eat, so let’s start early.

This is New Jersey, after all, so for breakfast, you’re going to eat that greasy, salty chopped pork shoulder product: Taylor Ham (or, as they call it in Asbury, Pork Roll). It’s available all over the city, but for the best experience, head to the Johnny Pork Roll truck in the North Eats Food Truck park and get the Sandwich, a traditional pork roll, egg and cheese with “saltpepperketchup,” a condiment accompaniment that must be uttered in a single breath.

If experimenting with the state’s most precious and peculiar cuisine is not in the cards, head to Cardinal Provisions for a mix of traditional brunch standards and original takes, like the cacio e pepe eggs.

You’ll want to walk off that breakfast, so stroll downtown toward Frank’s Deli and Restaurant for a classic, multi-page laminated menu and formica-topped booths. There’s nothing bad on this menu, but you’re here for jaw-locking Italian sandwiches. Order them like Anthony Bourdain used to: a heaping pile of ham, salami, pepperoni, provolone, tomatoes, onions, shredded lettuce and hot peppers, drenched in oil and vinegar.

Now, dinner can go in two directions. You could fashion a full pizza tour, sampling all the styles of New Jersey in the Asbury square mile. Start at Maruca’s on the boardwalk for a slice of “Tomato Pie,” a Jersey original where the sauce swirls like a spiral out from the center, mingling with the cheese rather than being buried by it. Then Talula’s hawks some of the best Neapolitan pizzas in New Jersey or New York, sourcing all their ingredients from local farms identified on a blackboard above the bar. Or head to Killer Pies for a traditional slice and a custom, classic fountain soda.

For more of a sit-down dinner, head to Heirloom at St. Laurent (where a $75 prix-fixe meal with a signature duck dish may be the finest dining in town), Pascal & Sabine for French-inspired fare, or Barrio Costero for elevated Mexican cooking and some of the best shrimp tacos on the shore. The boardwalk is home to Langosta Lounge and its famous Surf Curry, with fresh seafood floating in a house blend of yellow and green curry. Newcomer R Bar offers classic Big Easy dishes like gumbo, but also Jersey-inspired spins like a fried pork roll sandwich that is a homage to the famous fried bologna sandwich at Turkey and the Wolf in New Orleans. And since the fish are swimming so close by, there’s plenty of seafood at the Bonney Read .

If you saved room for dessert, head to Confections of a Rockstar and order cupcakes and other treats like a Macaroon 5, S’more than a Feeling or an Oreo Speedwagon (I could keep going but I’ll save some surprises for the visit).

Where to stay

Unlike many Jersey Shore towns, Asbury Park boasts multiple large hotels with full amenities and a range of prices. To experience the new, modern essence of Asbury, stay at the Asbury , a hotel fashioned out of the historic Salvation Army building that often has live music in the lobby, a rooftop bar and a pool out back (weekdays start at $395, weekends $660). Just across Bradley Park is the Berkeley Oceanfront Hotel , a long-running hotel that has been remodeled and upgraded (weekdays start at $295, weekends $459). At the other end of the beach is the Empress hotel (weekdays $229, weekends $339), a popular spot for L.G.B.T.Q. visitors, with views of the ocean.

For those looking for luxury, the new Asbury Ocean Club (weekdays start at $585, weekends $905), housed in a shimmering glass tower at the center of the beach expanse, is like stepping out of Asbury and into a Hamptons or South Beach scene. The lobby, bar and pool is all on the second floor of the hotel, with the only street exposure a small vestibule with elevators. And the St. Laurent ($425 to $600 most nights), newly opened this summer in the historic Hotel Tides building, counts 20 individually styled rooms — each is decorated with a custom surfboard by a local artist and comes with complimentary beach passes — above an expansive restaurant, whiskey bar and backyard pool.

Hi-Tide Summer Holiday festival in Asbury Park, and more things to do at the Shore

N ew Jersey-based “Surf, Lounge & Exotic Sounds” record label Hi-Tide Recordings presents the Hi-Tide Summer Holiday this weekend at Asbury Lanes and The Asbury hotel.

From Friday to Sunday there will be live music, a tropical cocktail menu, island eats, rooftop happy hours, pool parties, a vintage vendor market and more.

This year’s music lineup features renowned tiki group The Hula Girls, plus The McCharmlys, The Courettes, Marcel Bontempi & The Sound Minds, Bloodshot Bill & Televisionaries, Black Flamingos, The Babalooneys, Charlie & The Tropicales, Slowey & The Boats, The Swingin’ Palms, plus special guest DJ Monster Rally.

Pre-party events on Thursday, plus happy hours and the vendor market are free. Asbury Lanes shows are $50 per night; a two-day pass is $95. Pool party access is included with ticket purchase. Albert Music Hall anniversary show

Celebrate 50 years of the sounds of the Jersey Pines from 6 to 10 p.m. Saturday during an anniversary show for Albert Music Hall in Waretown. While the anniversary isn't until November, the hall will celebrate the milestone with a range of music.

Opening remarks, including stories about the hall's history, begin at 5:45 p.m. Libby Prison Minstrels start the show with traditional American songs. Also taking the stage is Fish & Whistle ,  Billy T Midnight ,  Elaine & The Cimarron Sky Band ,  Cranston Dean , and Redbird  & Raven. Josh Werner  & Friends closes the show with a one-hour set beginning at from 9 p.m.​

Tickets are $6, $1 for kids under 12. Doors open at 5 p.m. At the snack booth, burgers, hot dogs and "kielbasa & kraut" will be available — plus drinks, cakes, cookies and pies. There will be a 50/50 drawing and anniversary merchandise for sale. The air-conditioned Pickin' Shed will be open throughout the show.

Budweiser Clydesdales in Long Beach Township

The  Budweiser Clydesdales  are coming to the Shore, taking part in a parade and meet-and-greet in Long Beach Township, according to a  post on Facebook .

The event is set for Friday. The parade will kick off at 11 a.m. on Ocean Boulevard from 68th Street to 74th Street, then back to 68th Street, where a meet-and-greet will take place from noon to 1 p.m. at Bayview Park.

The post includes a "big thank you" to  Ritchie & Page Distributing  in Robbinsville for organizing the event. It urges people to follow @RPDBeer on Instagram for location updates.

The Clydesdales have been synonymous with Budweiser since 1933, when they first went on tour to commemorate the repeal of Prohibition. Dalmatians were introduced to the team in 1950. The Budweiser Clydesdales make hundreds of appearances across the country every year, in addition to their traditional Super Bowl commercials and more.

Suds for Seals fundraiser in Egg Harbor Township

Marine Mammal Stranding Center, a nonprofit organization dedicated to the rescue, rehabilitation and release of sick and injured marine mammals and sea turtles that visit New Jersey, hosts Suds for Seals from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. Thursday at Hidden Sands Brewing Company in Egg Harbor Township.

There will be food, raffles, craft beer — and craft soda. Tickets are $40 and include entry to the venue, "sea-cuterie," discounted drinks and a chance to win a gift from the center.

Must be 21 or older to attend.

'Spring Awakening' in Manasquan

Winner of eight Tony Awards on Broadway, "Spring Awakening" continues its run at Algonquin Arts Theatre in Manasquan with performances this weekend.

Step into a world where the vibrancy of youth clashes with the oppressive constraints of society. This groundbreaking musical features a soul-stirring score by Duncan Sheik, and book and lyrics by Steven Sater.

The musical's fusion of rock and folk music complements the poignant narrative of love, rebellion and self-discovery. The show takes place at 8 p.m. Friday, 2 and 8 p.m. Saturday, and 3 p.m. Sunday.

Tickets range from $27 to $45. The show is recommended for mature audiences.

John Lloyd Young at Bell Works

John Lloyd Young, the original Frankie Valli in "Jersey Boys" on Broadway, plays Bell Theater at Bell Works at 7 p.m. Friday.

Known for his Tony and Grammy-winning performance, Young will perform hits like "Sherry," "Big Girls Don't Cry" and "Can't Take My Eyes Off You." Young also starred in "Jersey Boys" on London’s West End, and was hand-picked by director Clint Eastwood to reprise his role in the Warner Bros. film adaptation.

Tickets are $70, $90 for VIP (includes a post-show reception with Young).

Fundraising food truck fest at Laurita Winery

Be a part of a food event for a cause this weekend at Laurita Winery in Plumsted. More than half a dozen trucks will gather for a fundraiser for Gennaro Balletta of Little Egg Harbor. Balletta, battling a recently diagnosed stage 4 Hodgkin’s Lymphoma, is the husband of Ashley Miller, whose family operates the Ocean County-based Five Sisters Food Co. food truck .

The fundraiser will feature food from Shore Good Eats N Treats, L'Acquario Seafood Italiano, Twelve Truck, Mexi Boys, Elemen7ts by NitroGirl, Maddelana's, Moonshine Chocolate Co. and Kiersten's Creations. There will be music, wine tasting and vineyard tours, too.

Admission costs $10, all of which will go to Balletta and Miller, and the food trucks will donate 10% of the day's sales.

'Hip-Hop Jewelry' in NYC

If you're heading into New York in the next few weeks to see a show or the U.S. Open, consider a stop at the American Museum of Natural History. " Ice Cold: An Exhibition of Hip-Hop Jewelry " celebrates hip-hop’s cultural influence through custom-made jewelry, featuring pieces from Slick Rick, A$AP Rocky, Nicki Minaj, The Notorious B.I.G., Bad Bunny, Erykah Badu and more.

"Ice Cold" chronicles the evolution of jewelry in hip-hop over the past five decades, starting with the oversized gold chains that were embraced by rap’s pioneers in the late-1970s, and moving through the 1990s, when hip-hop’s popularity exploded and artists sported record-label pendants sparkling with diamonds and platinum. With hip-hop’s exponential growth in the new millennium, the genre’s most influential artists turned to multi-colored jewelry with inventive designs that reference high fashion, pop culture, rap history and more.

Among the pieces in the exhibit are an Adidas necklace from Jam Master Jay of Run D.M.C., made in honor of the hit 1986 song “My Adidas,” which led to an historic endorsement deal between the group and the athletic company; Nas’ diamond-encrusted "QB" pendant, which pays homage to the Queensbridge Houses in Queens, where he grew up; and a multi-colored, fully-articulated LEGO minifigure pendant commissioned by A$AP Rocky.

"Ice Cold" is included with general admission — and New Jersey residents get to choose the amount they pay. The cost to see the museum's ticketed exhibitions, such as "The Secret World of Elephants," is $25, $20 for seniors 60 and older and students with ID, and $14 for children 3 to 12.

The museum is open daily from 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.

Enjoy small bites and more during the Asbury Park Restaurant Tour on April 21

The 11th annual Asbury Park Restaurant Tour will take place from noon to 4 p.m. Sunday, April 21.

Hosted by the Asbury Park Chamber of Commerce, the event features small bites and demos at a variety of restaurants, cafes, juice bars and venues throughout Asbury Park's boardwalk, downtown, Main Street and West side.

For $60 per person, you can enjoy samples from popular restaurants like Asbury Oyster Bar, The Black Swan, Coney Waffle, Dolce Fantasia, Johnny Mac's, Kim Marie's Eat 'n Drink Away, The Mainstay, The Robinson Ale House, Taka and more.

Alcoholic beverages are not included.

Registration takes place at Kennedy Park, 104 Grand Ave., between Cookman Avenue and Grand Avenue. Once registered, attendees will receive an official Restaurant Tour wristband, a map of participating restaurants to visit on your self-guided tour, and your "Secret Word" contest entry form.

Each restaurant will have its own "secret word." If you collect a minimum of 15 and bring the form back to the registration table, you will be entered to win the Top Taster prize: a 2024 Asbury Park Beach Badge.

Most participating restaurants are within a quick walk of registration, but there will also be shuttles running throughout the tour. Shuttle stops are marked on the map.

You cannot visit one restaurant twice, but you may visit as many restaurants as you like.

"We want to make sure that all 1,500 guests have an opportunity to try everything," the event page explains. "This is a great opportunity to try many different locations and types of cuisines."

After the tour, guests are encouraged to return to restaurants they enjoy most to further support local businesses in Asbury Park.

Chef’s wife came over at the end of our meal to greet us. They are a wonderful family. It is a wonderful restaurant and we will be dining there many many times. I recommend getting the fresh baguette. It was absolutely amazing. It was one of our friends birthdays, and they gave us a complementary dessert of some sort of banana foster ice cream sundae. That and the small donuts that were like French beignets (sp?) absolutely wonderful wonderful meal! Thank you to the entire staff! Our waiter turned out to be very good, as well as the bus boys! The lamb was tender, so was the filet and surf and turf. My halibut was absolutely delicious!!! We saved room for dessert (I don't know how haha) and shared the profiteroles and the pistachio 3 ways (ice cream, cake and mousse) - the latter one was outrageous, especially the ice cream. All desserts are made in house. The only downside was they ran out of diet coke; they didn't give enough mashed potatoes and they wouldn't give me a side of summer vegetables because they only make enough to order. The server Nick, (whom i requested for this time because he was our server the first time ) made this experience just as amazing as the first. His knowledge of the menu is second to none, and is most helpful without being annoying. The best server by far anywhere! Now on to the food…… the Corvina special is perfect, with just the right amount of seasoning. The lamb shank is huge, delicious, with not overly powered truffle mashed potatoes. The veal vol au vant was tender and melt in your mouth amazing. The strip steak and shrimp special was equally as great. Dessert options are plentiful and large enough portions to share, after a big meal. Overall this has been and amazing experience both visits. When I come back to New Jersey (moving out of state) I would definitely visit Poached Pear Bistro.
