Montrose, Colorado

Montrose is one of the larger mountain towns on the Western Slope. It’s still relatively small, but there’s plenty of commercial options for eating, shopping, and dining. Depending on who you ask, it’s pronounced either “mon-trose” or “mont-rose”. Most people use the former.

The town sits at 5,807 feet at the western base of the Rockies along the scenic Highway 550. This historic slope town was incorporated on May 1, 1882, and has grown to a population of 20,291 as of 2020. It’s located in Montrose County , between Delta and Ridgway.

Montrose officially became a town in 1882, after the Ute Indians were removed from their land and placed on a reservation. Before it was known as Montrose, other names included Pomona, Dad’s Town and Uncompahgre Town.

The original purpose of the area was to supply mining towns with materials. As the mining boom died down, agriculture remained the main industry in Montrose. The fertile land helped fruit and grain crops thrive for farmers.

Once a railway was built into town, it became a hub for transportation and supplies heading west. This is still true today, as Montrose has transformed into a gateway for those exploring that side of Colorado.

Main Attractions

Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park – The entrance to the South Rim is located only about 10 miles from downtown. This national park offers year-round recreation and sightseeing of a grandiose canyon carved by the Gunnison River.

While Montrose, Colorado is the gateway to Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park, east isn’t the only direction you can head from town for incredible outdoor recreation. When you basecamp in Montrose, you’ll get access to the stunning San Juan Mountains to the south, Colorado’s canyon country to the north, as well as the beautiful Uncompahgre National Forest to the west.

For amazing hiking trails in the Gunnison Gorge, head just north of the national park to the BLM-managed Gunnison Gorge Wilderness Area. The 7.1-mile Ute Trail descends to the Gunnison River below and is a great early or late season hike thanks to the area’s mild weather. The road to the trailhead is rough, so it’s best attempted in a four-wheel-drive vehicle. For a breathtaking summer hike, head south to the Blue Lakes Trail near Ridgway. This trail, which ascends under the watchful eye of 14,150-foot Mount Sneffels, climbs to a series of three lakes that are spectacularly blue. Lower Blue Lake is a 7-mile roundtrip trek, while Middle Blue Lake adds a little over a mile and Upper Blue Lake brings the roundtrip distance to 8.6 miles with 2,370 feet of elevation gain. Looking for mountain biking? Start in town. Mountain bikers can head to Cerise Park where several trail options make it easy to get some quick laps in before dinner. When summer days are hot, there’s no shortage of ways to get out on the water near Montrose. Blue Mesa Reservoir is one of the largest bodies of water in the state and offers boating and beach-going opportunities less than an hour east of town. For boating, head to Elk Creek Marina to rent pontoon boats, kayaks, canoes and stand-up paddleboards. There’s also a restaurant at the marina. It’s a good idea to call ahead to make sure there is enough water for the marina to operate. Even when the water is low, sandy beach access is still epic. If you’re searching for a sandy place to set up for the day, Bay of Chickens, Dry Creek and Old Highway 50 provide good swimming opportunities along the 29-mile-long reservoir.

Another gorgeous spot to enjoy the water is Ridgway State Park. With picture-perfect views of Mount Sneffels, you may spend more time taking pictures than you do paddling. Nevertheless, you can rent pontoon boats and a variety of paddle crafts at the park’s marina or at the Dallas Creek day-use area. If you’re looking to cast a line, this spot is also a great fishing destination, or check out the Gunnison River’s Gold Medal Waters inside Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park at East Portal.

For something a bit more educational but still outdoors, head to the Museum of the Mountain West where 28 historic buildings have been moved from various sites across western Colorado and even as far away as Alaska. Wander through buildings like a hotel, saloon and schoolhouse to learn what life was like on the frontier with the help of half-a-million artifacts. Take a self-guided or guided tour Monday through Saturday, 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. in the summer and Tuesday through Saturday 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m., in the winter.

After a day spent recreating, grab a drink at Storm King Distilling Co. Enjoy a cocktail crafted with house-made whiskey, gin, vodka, rum or agave spirits. There’s also Colorado Boy Pizzeria, a brewery serving up local brews and pies showcasing the best of the area’s agriculture. For more local fare, Montrose has an abundance of taquerias located along Main Street. These humble-looking spots are hiding seriously amazing and authentic Mexican dishes. Head to Tacos el Gordo for barbacoa, asada and even birria.

On the first Friday of the month throughout the summer, don’t miss the fun and family-friendly Montrose Summer Music Series. Hosted at Montrose Rotary Club Amphitheater, you can enjoy local music and a quintessential Colorado sunset on the sprawling lawn.

It is a gateway to both Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park to its east and Telluride and other ski areas in the San Juan Mountains to the south. It is also home to the West Elks American Viticultural Area (AVA), part of Colorado's Wine Country and the highest wine vineyards in North America .

Montrose is the second-largest town in western Colorado. Located on the valley floor, Montrose is surrounded by the photogenic mountain ranges of the Uncompahgre Plateau to the west and snow-capped San Juan mountains to the south.

The Uncompahgre Valley was the ancestral home of the Ute nation. But in the late 1870s, the lure of the gold and silver deposits in the area proved too great for the white settler population to resist. Tensions boiled over with the Meeker Massacre in 1879. Pushed to the breaking point by the Federal government's attempts to disband their nomadic way of life, the Utes killed several whites and launched the so-called Ute War. Initially successful, the Utes were forcibly relocated to Utah , and the southwest corner of Colorado, near Cortez .

Two months after the Utes were evicted, in December 1881, the town was founded. In the early days, Montrose was known variously as Pomona, Dad’s Town, and Uncompahgre Town.

Eventually, the town was named after Sir Walter Scott's historic novel, "A Legend of Montrose" because the area reminded Joseph Selig, the town founder, of Scotland's lake country.

Montrose served as a supply depot to service mining towns like Ouray , Silverton , Telluride and Durango in the San Juans, raising cattle and sheep to feed the miners. By 1882, the Denver & Rio Grande Railroad Co built a narrow gauge railroad from Montrose to Silverton.

Besides mining and ranching, orchards were a part of the area's agricultural history. The mines went into decline, and agriculture became the center of Montrose's economy. Settlers worked the fertile valley soil producing fruits, grains and vegetables. By the late 20th century, grape growers had discovered the area's potential for raising white wine varietals, and Colorado's wine industry migrated south from Grand Junction and Palisade . The West Elks American Viticultural Area was formed in 2001. Ranging from 5,400 feet (1646 m) to 6,400 feet (1951 m) above sea level, West Elks comprises the highest vineyards in North America.

Montrose now serves as a recreational hub for tourists and outdoor enthusiasts. Leisure travelers can hike, camp or enjoy boating and fishing in the surrounding national parks, forests and recreation areas. The town is a laid back mix of ranchers, farmers, ski bums, aging hippies and jocks.

The busy tourist months are in the summer, with most travelers just passing through in the winter on their way to Crested Butte and Telluride .

There are also airports in Denver and Grand Junction .

Frontier Airlines, United Airlines, and Southwest Airlines all maintain hubs at the airport in Concourses A, B, and C respectively. Most other major domestic carriers also have service here.

• US 550 comes in from Albuquerque ending at the corner of Townsend Avenue and Main Street, in Montrose.
