Color Line ordered the €250m Superspeed project in December 2005. These vessels were built by Aker Yards (now STX Europe).

Air condition and ventilation systems were supplied by Koja, auxiliary steam boilers and exhaust gas economisers by Aalborg Industries, the central cooler for the main engine by Alfa Laval, fire alarms by Autronica Fire and Security, life boats and life boat davits by Umoe Schat-Harding, passenger and service elevators by KONE Elevators, prefabricated cabins and bathroom modules by Aker Yards Cabins, roro equipment by MacGregor and windows, glass walls and wind screens by Pilkington Marine.

Mobile phone services, known as CellAtSea have been installed by MCP (Maritime Communications Partner).

In June 2010, a €12m contract was awarded to STX Europe for the conversion of Superspeed 1. The conversion was completed in 2011at STX Finland’s shipyard in Helsinki.

Superspeed vessel design by Falkum-Hansen

The interior, exterior as well as overall layouts of the vessels were designed by Falkum-Hansen Design. Superspeed vessels have a gross tonnage of 33,500t. Their length and breadth are 211.3m and 25.8m respectively.

Their deep-draught is 6.5m. These vessels have a capacity of 1,929 passengers, 71 crew members and 764 cars. They offer 2,000 lane metres of vehicle space.

The shape of the hull allows the vessel to optimise its sea-keeping features and speed.

The bow of the vessel is reasonably high and short. Its circular superstructure has been brought up to the height of the bridge. The relatively long rear of the vessel facilitates a large entry space between the actual rear of the ship and the rear of the superstructure.

Construction of the Superspeed 1 and 2 Ro-pax ferries

The keel of Superspeed 1 was laid in February 2007 and the vessel was floated out in August 2007. Due to technical faults in an auxiliary engine and several other faults, the vessel’s delivery was delayed by almost two months.

The Superspeed 1 conversion project ordered in June 2010 included construction of a small galley on deck seven, a two deck high pizza restaurant and 24 new crew cabins on deck ten. Two additional lifeboats were also provided. In order to make the ship lighter, a major portion of its new structures was built using aluminium.

Dining and entertainment facilities on the Color Line fleet ships

Smoke-free restaurants and bars on the Superspeed ships offer several cuisine options onboard. Catch Me If You Can, a buffet restaurant, is located aft on deck eight. The 365 seat restaurant serves Nordic food, children’s buffet, soft drinks, beer, wine and coffee.

The 340-seater Fly Me To The Moon restaurant is located on deck eight. Here, passengers can find baked goods, salads and vegetable dishes, hot and wok dishes, varieties of pasta and pizza, cakes and desserts. Bluefins Lounge & Bar is located aft on deck seven and eight and can seat 365 persons.

Onboard stores include a Color shop, a fashion shop, perfume and cosmetics, a duty free market and a deli.

The duty free market, including Color shop, is located on deck seven. At Color shop, one can find children’s clothing, jewellery, watches, music, films, cameras and other electronic products. Tax-free market also sells products such as wine, liquor, beer and chocolate. The fashion shop and perfume and cosmetics shop are also located on deck seven. A varied range of meat products and delicacies are sold at deli shop.

The Business Class lounge with seating for 93 people and Voyager Class lounge with seating for 261 people are located in the aft section of decks eight and nine. A screen with free TV and internet access is fitted on the back of each chair. There is an extra sitting lounge on deck nine.

The vessels have three main stairways and five elevators. A multideck car deck complex and storage rooms are located on deck six. The entire provisioning of the vessel is handled through a crane installed on the top deck.

Superspeed 1 and 2 Ro-pax ferries propulsion and engines

Superspeed’s diesel-mechanical propulsion system consists of four nine-cylinder Wartsila 9L46 main diesel engines, each capable of generating 9,600kW at 500rpm. The vessels are fitted with Rolls-Royce Kamewa-type, twin controllable pitch propellers.

For safe manoeuvring, they are installed with two 2,400kW bow thrusters and a 1,200kW stern thruster supplied by Rolls-Royce. The vessels are also installed with four six-cylinder Wartsila 6L32 auxiliary engines, each generating 3,000kW at 750rpm.

A common-rail fuel injection system allows the vessels to cruise with lower exhaust emissions. The vessel’s cruising speed is 27kt.

Voyagers turn 20 – but could they have been better?

30/07/2021 by Kevincm

a group of people holding a sign in front of a train

The Voyager (Class 220) and Super Voyager (Class 221 ) fleets were introduced in 2001 by Virgin CrossCountry and Virgin West Coast , as diesel multiple units to connect the networks that are unable to be served by electric trains.

They replaced locomotive-hauled trains that served the routes (inherited from British Rail Intercity days), as well as supplanting HST trains on some routes.

a train at a train station

They are designed to operate up to 200kph/125mph, and in some cases, tilt as well (in the case of some who have tilt-enabled units), and CrossCountry (whose units have tilt isolated).

The trains were manufactured by Bombardier, (acquired by Alstom in January 2021) and entered service in 2001.

The Voyager Fleet can be found across the length and breadth of Britain’s Inter-City network from Aberdeen to Penzance, London to Llandudno.

The allocations currently are:

  • Cross Country: 34 four-car Voyagers (Class 220)
  • Cross Country: 4 four-car Super Voyagers (Class 221)
  • Cross Country: 20 five-car Super Voyagers (Class 221)
  • Avanti West Coast: 20 five-car Super Voyagers (Class 221)

All 78 units are owned by Beacon Rail, and maintained by Alstom at its Central Rivers depot, with heavy component overhaul taking place at Alstom’s Crewe and Ilford facilities.

Innovation to continue – but missed opportunities

Even though they’re 20 years there seems to be plenty of room for innovation still, with such as hybrid diesel/battery operation and intelligent engine stop/start, being developed for the type.

However, there was a missed opportunity some years ago, when there was an opportunity to make them dual-mode, with an extra carriage to be added, which would allow it to powered from overhead electricity (as part of Project Thor). This was not taken up in the end.

This brings us to the next issue with the class- capacity.

Too short when they were ordered and never expanded

The Class 220 Voyager and Class 221 Super Voyager were ordered primarily as four-class configurations, with Super Voyagers mainly made up of five car configurations.

These replaced trains that were on average seven carriages long. In addition, space was consumed with luggage racks and large (if rather smelly) toilet units -leaving an ever reducing space for passenger seats .

Whilst it was argued that the improved timetable would justify the four/five-car sets, passenger demand soared – leaving Virgin and Arriva Cross Country with standing passengers on long haul routes – to the point where InterCity 125 trains returned to some CrossCountry routes.

And sadly, the units were never expanded… except for one member of the family.

Enter the Meridian

The last member of the Voyager family is the Class 222 Meridians. These entered service with  East Midlands Trains  (operated by Stagecoach) and Hull Trains  and currently operate with East Midlands Railway (operated by Abellio).

East Midlands Railway Class 222 train - Image, Luton Airport/East Midlands Railway

Curiously, whilst they ordered some rather long nine-car sets, along with some four-car sets. The nine-car sets slowly were reduced to eight cars, then seven, with the four-car sets being transformed into five-car sets.

Currently, East Midlands Railway operates:

  • 6 Seven Car Sets (Class 222/0)
  • 17 Five Car Sets (Class 222/0)
  • 4 Four Car sets (Class 222/1)

Peter Broadley, Managing Director, Services for Alstom UK & Ireland said:

“Twenty years of reliable, 200 km/hour operation across Britain is a very significant milestone. We are delighted to celebrate Voyager 20 with our friends from Beacon Rail, CrossCountry and Avanti West Coast and look forward to future innovations to achieve even greater sustainability.”

Rob Dee, Beacon Rail said

“The Voyager fleet is an integral part of Beacon’s portfolio, consisting of close to 2,000 items of rolling stock operating in 17 countries across Europe.  Since taking ownership of the Voyagers in 2017 Beacon has worked closely with our customers Avanti West Coast and CrossCountry as well as Alstom to ensure the Voyagers offer a high level of safety, reliability, availability and comfort to the travelling public. Beacon has also commissioned industry colleagues to develop a hybrid battery solution for the fleet. The hybrid will significantly reduce emissions in built-up areas whilst maintaining Voyager’s high-speed, go-anywhere capability”.

Tom Joyner, Managing Director at CrossCountry said:

“The Voyager fleet has provided a sterling service for countless passengers over the past twenty years. There are some innovative projects in the pipeline, which will ensure the Voyagers continue to form a key part of our fleet and we are looking forward to working with colleagues from Alstom and Beacon Rail on these in the months ahead.”

Gus Dunster, Executive Director Operations & Safety, Avanti West Coast said:

“The Super Voyager has played a key role in the transformation of the West Coast Main Line – being integral to a high frequency timetable and helping to put Shrewsbury and Blackpool back on the map. The recent £8.3m investment in the fleet has given the trains a new lease of life and they will continue to serve our customers with great distinction.”

The next years

The Voyager fleet will see continued demand – however, the Meridian fleet is set to be released in the near future, when their new Class 810 “Arora” Fleet.

East Midands Railway Class 810

In theory, this will displace the Class 222 Meridian fleet. In addition,  Avanti West Coast  will be adding Class 805 trains too, to replace their Super Voyager fleet.

Where it will go in the age of Great British Railways – who knows. Hopefully, CrossCountry can benefit from these releases.

But one thing is for certain – we’ll be seeing a lot of the Voyagers to come for many years, as they connect Penzance to Aberdeen, from Bournthmoth to Manchester and the places in between.

Superspeed 2 ferry Wiki

The fast ferries Superspeed 1 and Superspeed 2 are Color Line's newest ships, both entering service in 2008 (respectively, in February and June). Both ships operate on the routes Norway-Denmark between Kristiansand and Hirtshals . Both vessels (project "Color Line Superspeed") were ordered in December 2015 for a total cost of EUR 250 million. They were constructed by the shipbuilder Aker Yards (STX Finland) at Rauma Shipyard .

These high-speed cruise ferries were designed by the Norwegian company Falkum-Hansen Design ( Oslo ). The hull shape is optimized to allow stability at higher speeds (max speed 31 knots / 57 kph / 36 mph). The ship's bow is high and short, while the superstructure is circular, brought up to the Navigation Bridge's height. The funnel is located aft. The vessel design features a larger entry space between the stern and the superstructure's rear.

Among the technology and equipment suppliers were the companies Koja (air-conditioning and ventilation systems), Aalborg Industries (steam and exhaust gas boilers), Alfa Laval (main engine's central cooler), Autronica (fire alarm and suppression systems), Umoe Schat-Harding (lifeboats and davits), KONE Elevators (lifts), Aker Yards Cabins (prefabricated staterooms and bathroom modules, MacGregor (Ro-Ro equipment) Pilkington Marine (windows, glass walls, windscreens), MCP (mobile phone services / CellAtSea), Wartsila (main and auxiliary engines), Rolls-Royce (propulsion).

Ferries' propulsion system is based on marine diesel engines - four Wartsila engines (9-cylinder, model 9L46, total power output 38,4 MW), plus four Wartsila 6L32 diesel generators (6-cylinder, total power output 12 MW). The ship's propulsion system is by Rolls-Royce Marine and consists of 2 controllable pitch propellers, 2 bow thrusters (combined power 4,8 MW) and 1 stern thruster (1,2 MW).

Due to technical issues, Superspeed 2 ship was delivered 2 months behind schedule (planned for late April 2008, delivered June 2008).

In 2010-2011, MS Superspeed 2 was converted in Finland (EUR 12 million drydock refit and refurbishment project) by STX Europe at the Helsinki shipyard. During the refit were added a galley/kitchen (deck 7), 2-deck high cafe restaurant (Bluefins Kitchen, decks 7-8), 24 new staff and crew cabins (deck 10) and 2 lifeboats. To make the ferry lighter, most of the newly added structures were made of aluminum. Following the conversion, the ship's capacity was increased from 1928 to 2335.

Metro tour – daily

Palaces for ordinary people – that was what Stalin promised to the people when the construction of the Moscow Metro began between the World Wars. The communist dictator hadn’t promised too much. No other underground system in the world can boast such spectacular architecture – chandeliers, decorations, stucco, paintings on the walls – each station is individually designed. No wonder that Moscow residents love their metro. I will guide you through the bustle of one of the busiest subways in the world and show you the most beautiful stations Moscow city has.

Tour of Communist Moscow – every day

After the Communist October Revolution in 1918, Moscow became the capital of the Soviet Empire and was the center of socialist orbit for more than 70 years. This left its mark on Moscow, even if the USSR disintegrated more than a quarter of a century ago. The city streets are full of remnants of the communist regime and the Cold War. This is a walking tour where I will show you the most exciting places in Soviet Moscow: from the notorious KGB headquarters, also known as Lubyanka to the Karl Marx Monument to small hidden remains from the time of hammer and sickle. You will also learn about Stalin’s Great Terror political campaign and the system of the GULAG and how the USSR, the communist Russian republic, became modern Russia.

Alternative Moscow Tour – daily

Explore the unseen Moscow with your Moscow private guide and discover a range of sights during this alternative walking tour.  Away from the main tourist spots (in the central district of Kitay-Gorod), just a short walk from Red Square and St. Basil’s Cathedral, you suddenly find yourself in one of the trendiest districts of Moscow. This place not only has trendy cafes and green squares, but here you can see the most beautiful spray works (according to Albrecht Dürer), hangout-places of the youth and hipsters, as well as learn what Moscow looked like in the 19th century. Here you will also learn exciting and even bloody stories about famous gangsters, eccentric business people and legends like the wandering preacher Rasputin, who is known in Russia either as the “holy devil” or the mad monk. To learn a little more about Moscow’s culture, this is the tour for you. On my alternative tour, you will get to know Moscow away from the tourist hotspots. This tour is of 2 hours duration and you will experience the following on the tour:

  • St. John’s Hill, a quiet oasis right in the center, where time has stopped as it did in pre-Communist times
  • Khokhlovka Art Center, where Russian hipsters and street artists hang out
  • Samoskvorechye District where you can see beautiful streets and hear stories from old Moscow
