Buddhist Culture, Himalayan Peaks & Tiger's Nest

Wonderfully unique. Incredibly dramatic. From the rich Buddhist culture to its remote Himalaya setting, its magical essence can't be articulated. Here the people live hard but full lives, rooted in age-old tradition and guided by Gross National Happiness. Bhutan seems like a place that couldn't exist in today’s world. Join us on this one-of-a-kind hiking tour and feel the magic.

  • Hike to secluded temples and monasteries, including the famed Tiger's Nest, which clings to the side of a cliff
  • Meet our knowledgeable Bhutanese guides and friends who open doors normally closed to foreign travelers
  • Climb herders' trails to spectacular panoramic views framed by fluttering strings of colorful prayer flags
  • Exchange ideas with Buddhist monks—and receive a blessing—at a monastery where foreign groups are seldom received

Straight Talk

We want to make sure you're on the trip that's right for you. Every Backroads trip is unique and this one is no exception.

This trip includes two nights at the beautiful Dhensa Boutique Resort, a Casual Plus Hotel. We've chosen it because of its proximity to our favorite routes, its friendly hospitality, strong cultural character and the tremendous view from the deck.

Some hotels and restaurants we visit see few Western travelers and therefore lack many Western-style services. The leisurely service found in neighborhood restaurants and the limited supply of beer can all be appreciated as part of the journey.

Bhutan is a remote corner of the world where ancient culture, traditions and religion are still the deep-rooted cornerstones of everyday life. That said, modern Bhutan is not always the Shangri-La depicted in glossy travel magazines. Rather, it's a developing country, where the scenes of poverty, trash and pollution can be jarring.  And yet, the beauty of the people, the culture and the landscape shine through. Our itineraries and Trip Leaders remove as many obstacles and inconveniences as possible, but we can't remove haze and noise from the air, or replace a poorly maintained road or trail—it's all part of the experience here!

This trip includes travel on a commercial flight so that we can explore the best of your destination. Please note that flight schedules can change with little advance warning, which may require us to adjust our activities on a travel day. Your Trip Leaders will provide more details on any changes should this occur.

World-Class Hotels

Our hand-selected Premiere hotels offer exceptional hospitality and experiences as special as the regions we explore.

What people love about Bhutan Tours

I had a really fabulous time with a great group of like minded travellers. The itinerary was packed and it would have been nice if the tour could have been a few days longer and not quite so intensive.
A wonderful tour covering the highlights of Bhutan. The people were all so friendly, the tour was incredibly organized, and each day was a great mix of cultural activities and education plus outdoor excursions. I would highly recommend this option for people to explore Bhutan
Very well run by the local tour company (Gakyil) . My guide and driver were excellent.(Dev and Tashi) Both had really good knowledge. Tashi my guide gave me a great insight into Budhisim. We also had a lot of fun and many laughs. I highly recommend this tour. Bhutan is a real eye opener. There should be more places like this in this world. Glenn Burnside New Zealand

What our guests say.

We were very impressed with the services provided by Bhutan Travel Bureau. From our initial contact where we were provided with useful information to aid in planning our trip, to the quick replies and efficient rebooking of our flights and hotels when events outside of our control caused a change in schedule, they were always on top of everything. Once we started our tour, both our driver and guide were very professional, knowledgeable and capable.

We thoroughly enjoyed our time in Bhutan. It is a beautiful country with lovely people and an interesting culture. We were happy with our itinerary and the amount of time we spent in each city. Our guide, Carma, was excellent! We could not have asked for a better guide. He was friendly, polite, personable, patient, and accommodating to our wishes. He was extremely knowledgeable about Buddhism and Bhutanese culture. We learned a lot.

A wonderful 8 day exploration in September of Western Bhutan which exceeded all our expectations. There were four of us aged between 27 and 72, of varying fitness levels. The care that was taken of us by our guide Thinlay and driver Karma was fantastic, we were in very capable hands. They were patient, friendly and keen to make our trip memorable and interesting. The climb to the Tiger’s Nest on the last day was the climax of an unforgettable holiday. We’ll definitely be going back for another trip!

I was on a solo trip to Bhutan in Sept. 2019. I was a “difficult” customer in the sense that I had lots of special requirements. BTB´s guide dealt with them in a very efficient and friendly manner and I had a truly unique experience. I also appreciated the driver´s calm and solid ways, as the road conditions in Bhutan are sometimes bad. Before the trip, communications with BTB were smooth and fast. I can sincerely recommend BTB.

Our ten day tour with Bhutan Travel Bureau was fantastic. Thinley was an excellent guide who spoke perfect English and was very knowledgeable and friendly. He was very kind and helpful but also allowed us time on our own when needed. The car (a new Toyota) was very comfortable and had lots of space for luggage and pillows for the passengers. BTB was very helpful in tailoring a tour to our preferences and always went above and beyond when we had extra requests. Cannot recommend highly enough!

Bhutan trekking FAQs

Trekking in bhutan: overview.

Trekking in Bhutan promises a glimpse of the Himalaya that only a lucky few get to experience. The country has all the huge snow-capped peaks you'd expect along the border with Tibet, plus plenty of epic high passes, glittering turquoise glacial lakes and even the occasional snow leopard.

What it doesn't have is Nepal -style crowds or the infrastructure of trekking lodges and tradition of independent trekking. Here, trekking is all organised, expedition-style, and costs more than anywhere else in the Himalaya.

I’ve been lucky enough to spend many months travelling and trekking in Bhutan while researching five editions of travel guides to Bhutan. To do this independently would have cost me tens of thousands of US dollars.

So why spend all the extra money to come trekking here? The main thing I noticed when visiting here after Nepal was the lack of crowds. Campsites are in remote valleys, not yet connected by well-trodden paths, and the enchanting forest trails are some of the most beautiful I've seen anywhere in the Himalaya.

There's a wide diversity of hiking in Bhutan. The most adventurous routes climb over a series of high passes into the remote, rugged regions of Lingzhi, Laya and Lunana, dotted with fortresses, yak pastures and hanging glacial valleys. The peaks here are jagged and raw and it feels like very few people have gone here before you. There are few places where you can find that these days. If you can afford it, look no further.

The best treks in Bhutan

Our experts' top picks.

Of all Bhutan's trekking regions I'd say that Laya is my favourite, because of the mix of great mountain scenery and rich local culture. The Layap women here wear fabulous woven bamboo hats and the men are mostly yak herders.

Jomolhari Basecamp trek

Jomolhari Basecamp trek

Horizonguides.

  • Distance: Approximately 47 miles (75 km)
  • Duration: Seven to nine days
  • Start and end point: Paro
  • Difficulty: Moderate

The Jomolhari (or Chomolhari) basecamp trek is a circular trek that begins and ends in Paro. It is a moderately challenging trek of approximately 47 miles (75 kilometres) and takes about seven to nine days to complete.

During this short, high-altitude trek you’ll enjoy marvellous views of the Jomolhari and Jichu Drake peaks, as well as alpine meadows and dense forests. The terrain includes rocky paths, steep ascents and descents.

The trek also offers glimpses into Bhutan's history. Along the way, you'll encounter remote villages where traditional Bhutanese culture thrives and you can meet locals, gaining insight into their way of life.

Laya trek

  • Distance: approx. 80 miles (129 km)
  • Duration: 13 days
  • Start: Sharna Zampa, Paro
  • End: Koina, Gasa
  • Difficulty: Strenuous

Sometimes called the 'short' Snowman Trek, this is still not a route to be taken lightly.

This trek takes around 13 days to complete, although most tour operators will package it with a couple of nights in Paro and a visit to Taktsang Monastry (Tiger's Nest). You'll need a decent level of physical fitness, will have to acclimatise before you begin hiking – the maximum altitude is 4,900 metres – and will need to prepare for variable weather conditions.

Highlights along the way include breathtaking mountain views, alpine lakes, and remote villages showcasing traditional Bhutanese culture. Along the way you can also encounter a variety of wildlife including blue sheep, takins, and various bird species like the Himalayan Monal and the Yellow-billed blue Magpie. If you’re lucky, you could catch a glimpse of the elusive snow leopard.

Snowman (Lunana) trek

Snowman (Lunana) trek

  • Distance: 216 miles (347 kilometres)
  • Duration: 25 to 30 days
  • Start point: Shana
  • End point: Sephu or Bumthang

The Snowman Trek is widely considered to be one of the hardest treks anywhere on earth, due to its formidable combination of extreme distance, altitude , terrain and cold. If that hasn't put you off, this might be the trek for you!

There are actually several routes under the Snowman label, they largely follow the same route but then exit in different valley systems. Expect at least 27 days of trekking (including a few rest days), often for up to eight or nine hours per day. You'll be hiking above 4,000 metres pretty much the entire time, with a max elevation of 5,300 metres. It's essential you take the altitude seriously and acclimatise accordingly.

On the way you'll be treated to a kaleidoscope of the very best of Bhutan. You'll see blue sheep and musk deer, and maybe the more elusive animals such as snow leopards, red pandas and the Himalayan black bear. The trek also passes through remote villages where you can learn about the local culture and meet Bhutanese people who live in the area.

Druk Path trek

Druk Path trek

  • Distance: Approximately 50 miles (80 km)
  • Duration: Five to six days
  • Start point: Paro
  • End point: Thimphu

The Druk Path is a popular hiking route in Bhutan which covers about 50 miles and takes five to six days to complete. A moderate difficulty suitable for most hikers, the route goes from Paro to Thimphu.

Highlights include the Tiger’s Net Monastery in Paro, Jele Dzong fortress and Phajoding Monastery as well as high-altitude likes like Simoktra and Jimilang.

You can also spot a range of wildlife, including langur monkeys, blue sheep and takin, Bhutan’s national animal as well as, if you’re lucky, the rarely spotted snow leopard.

Soi Yaksa (Jomolhari Loop)

Soi Yaksa (Jomolhari Loop)

  • Distance: Approximately 71 miles (114 km)
  • Duration: Eight to ten days

The Jomolhari loop is a moderate and rewarding circular hiking route in Bhutan. It is about 71 miles (114 km) long and typically takes eight to ten days to complete. The trek begins and ends in Paro and along the way, you can explore the stunning landscapes of the Jomolhari region.

One of the highlights of the trek is the Jomolhari Mountain (also known as Jumolhari or Chomolhari), which serves as a spectacular backdrop for the entire journey. You’ll also be able to see Himalayan blue sheep and herds of yaks.

Planning a Bhutan trek

Everything you wish you’d known before you booked, how to deal with the infamous tourist tax.

Bhutan is notorious for its hefty tourist tax (officially, Sustainable Development Fee , or SDF) which is currently priced at USD$200 per person per day (Indian, Maldivian and Bangladeshi citizens get a discount). The principle behind the SDF is to limit overall numbers and ensure that anyone who does visit makes a sizeable contribution to the country’s development and infrastructure. Like it or not, it’s a bold solution to a problem that has plagued much of the rest of the world.

Discounts are currently available which are intended to encourage longer stays. If you pay seven days of the fee, you now get another seven days free (worth US$1,400). If you pay for 12 days, you can get up to 18 more free (worth US$3,600). You have to make your trip before the end of 2024 to qualify.

Jomolhari base camp

Part of the allure of Bhutan is its fiercely protected reputation for remoteness and unspoiled tranquillity, which makes recommending Jangothang (aka Jomolhari Base Camp) a bit of a contradiction: with half a dozen trek routes converging here, this is the one vaguely busy spot. But the views looking up at the eastern face of Jomolhari (7,314m) are simply astonishing, and well worth tolerating some crowds for. I recommend spending at least two nights here (important for acclimatisation), preferably three, as there are some amazing day hikes to explore.

Before and after your trek

In some ways the real draw of Bhutan is its stunningly preserved traditional culture, more than its raw Himalayan scenery. Don't get me wrong, the mountain scenery is superb, but then so is Nepal's – at a fraction of the price – so I'd always recommend adding on an equal amount of time sightseeing in the Paro, Thimphu and Punakha valleys. To come only for trekking is to miss out on Bhutan's true uniqueness.

Your questions, our expert answers

When is the best time to go trekking in bhutan is it year-round what are the best and worst months.

The best months are October and November for the clearest views, and April and May for spring blooms. Don't come in the monsoon (July, August).

Is altitude sickness a problem while trekking in Bhutan?

Acclimatising properly is absolutely essential to a successful trek in Bhutan. Many passes are over 5,000m, and most are over 4,000m. Most treks have built-in acclimatisation days and it's essential to follow these.

How challenging is the trekking in Bhutan? Would you recommend it, say for a fit & active 60 year old?

There's a wide range of treks on offer in Bhutan. The 25-day Snowman Trek is one of the world's toughest treks. Less physically challenging but still adventurous treks include the popular Druk Path, or you can hike a section of the 400 km-long Trans-Bhutan Trail, which sticks to lower altitudes and offers village homestays.

Can you trek in Bhutan solo or without a guide?

No, all treks (indeed all travel) in Bhutan have to be fully organised and accompanied by a guide and trekking agency staff, who will arrange everything. On my first 'solo' trek here I had a guide, cook, three other staff and nine pack horses - just for me!

What sort of accommodations are there? Can we stay with locals?

Most trekking groups stay in their own double tents. A couple of route options (including the Trans-Bhutan Trail) overnight in village homes and there are good homestays in Laya.

What kind of food should I expect on a Bhutan trek?

Bhutan is the only place where I've actually gained weight on a trek, thanks to the three meals a day (plus snacks) cooked up by trek staff. Breakfast is toast, cereal, coffee and often eggs. Dinner is a multi-dish feast of rice and vegetable curries; lunch is similar but cooked in the morning and transported in thermos dishes for a hot picnic. You'll even get French fries once or twice.

Which is your favourite trekking region in Bhutan?

I'd say that Laya is my favourite region, because of the mix of great mountain scenery and rich local culture. The Layap women here wear fabulous woven bamboo hats and the men are mostly yak herders.

Is it safe? How about for solo female travellers?

Yes, Bhutan is incredibly safe.

What are the hardest and easiest treks in Bhutan?

The hardest, that's easy - the Snowman Trek. More people have summited Everest than completed this trek!

The easiest is probably the two-day Saga La Trek, which is really two half-days of walking bookended by some monastery and fortress sightseeing.

Another easy going trek, and one of my favourites, is the two-day Bumdrak hike. It's a one-nighter, staying in a luxurious fixed camp (real beds!) and the second day is all downhill, winding through lovely forests to temples and views above the famous Tiger's Nest Monastery, the country's single most famous sight.

What gear can I rent in Bhutan?

Your trekking agency will provide tents, a mattress and a sleeping bag, but I'd advise you to bring your own sleeping bag and mat for comfort and familiarity. There's not much quality gear available to rent in Bhutan.

What permits are required to trek in Bhutan?

In order to visit Bhutan you have to pay a Sustainable Development Fee of US$200 per person per day, on top of the cost of your trek (though there are currently some temporary discounts on this). Your trekking agency will then arrange all the national park and trekking permits that you need.

How does trekking in Bhutan compare with Nepal?

Apart from the much higher costs, Bhutan sees a fraction of the trekkers who visit Nepal, so there are no crowds, no backpacker scene and no trekking lodges in Bhutan. The environment is much more pristine and the culture more intact, but the peaks are on a slightly smaller scale.

Trekking in Bhutan is expensive! Is it worth the money?

Trekking in Bhutan is costlier than Nepal or India for sure, but remember that US$200 per day of your trip fee is going to fund healthcare, education and environmental protection in Bhutan. For me the feeling I get from having a stunning Himalayan valley or view to myself is really priceless. If you are happier with the social nature of teahouse trekking, then maybe it's not worth the cost for you.

Bhutan Trekking Tours – Best Time for Trekking in Bhutan

Most of the Bhutan trekking holidays happen in the spring or autumn because the weather is extremely pleasant during those seasons. It has been observed that the best period for trekking is from late September to mid-November, while the second best time for high-altitude hiking in Bhutan is from late March to mid-May.

Spring Season

The greatest time to go trekking is still in the spring, even though it occasionally rains, especially in May when the temperature is approximately 70 degrees Fahrenheit. Rhododendron woods are in flower during this time, and if you're lucky, your Bhutan trekking tours will be well worth it because you'll get to view the rare blue poppy.

Summer Season

Summer is generally not the ideal season for Bhutan hiking tours but some people still enjoy trekking during this season. Allow yourself to take part in Bhutan trekking trips in the summer, when the days tend to be clear and lush if you want to experience a serene atmosphere. Between July and August, there are typically showers every day; however, the heavier downpours frequently happen at night, so you may still happily enjoy your hikes.

Autumn Season

The best season to go hiking in Bhutan is in the autumn since the weather is quite consistent and the sky is always clear and blue. There aren't many clouds in the sky, therefore at night, you can see the most amazing view of the Himalayan parks decorated with a starry sky. In general, you should have fun hiking in Bhutan at this time.

Winter Season

Even while winter may not be the ideal season for most activities, Bhutan has some excellent hiking paths, like Samtegang Nabji Korphu and Manas Trek. Most paths are under heavy snowfall during that time (late November to early March), and the passes are nearly saturated with snow. On the other hand, low areas have warmer temperatures, which is a little better for hikes. Overall, there is no ideal time to go on a Bhutan trekking tour; therefore, you can go trekking all year round.

Bhutan Trekking Tips – Information and Guide

It's crucial to realize that you'll be trekking with very little oxygen available at this type of altitude since many of the Bhutan trekking paths will take you across high mountain passes and reach heights of more than 5,000 meters. If not treated seriously, altitude sickness poses a very significant risk to one's health and, in rare situations, can even be fatal. Regardless of the route you choose, it's critical to plan and ensure you have all the safety-related trekking gear you'll need. If you are not a resident of Bangladesh, India, or the Maldives, you must obtain a visa as well as a trekking permit from a Bhutanese travel firm that is authorised to operate there. For larger trekking parties, discounts on the daily visa charge are typically available. Although English is the majority language in Bhutan, communication shouldn't be a problem despite Dzongkha being the official language. Since the only places with ATMs are the major towns, you should always bring cash with you since ngultrum is the local currency.

Necessary Trekking Gears

Even though Bhutan's peaceful tours and treks continue to supply trekking necessities like tents and cooking utensils on the trek route, there are still several items that are not available. You must bring all additional necessary trekking equipment because you would never want to get stuck in high altitudes especially due to a lack of trekking gear or necessary items. Additionally, the items on the list below are quite helpful, and the majority of them are required for a lengthy walk.

General trekking items

Some of the most Socks trekking items that are generally required in all types of trekking are, Trekking or running shoes, Camps shoes or Thongs Clothing, Sun hat, Underwear, T-shirts/ blouses, Pants (trekking pants), Waterproof jacket, raincoat or umbrella, Short or skirt (hiking), Jump/ Pile jacket, Down/ Fibre-filled jacket, Rucksack, Sleeping bag, Water bottle, Torch etc

Special Equipment for Bhutan Treks

Mountain trekking boots, Socks, Long underwear, Woolen hat, Gloves, Long gaiter, Insulating pants, Nylon windbreakers, Photography Equipment, Lenses and Camera, Lenses cleaning, Film, Compass, Binoculars, Thermometer, some books to read in spare time, Sunglasses and Sunblock

Will the Bhutan Trekking Trip suit me?

As it has been discussed in length previously Bhutan trekking is all about trekking in difficult terrains which is very much physically demanding and requires a lot of mental and physical strength. Mountains in Bhutan have steep valleys and are in very high altitudes where the climate changes frequently. As far as adapting to these tough situations is concerned, it all depends upon your physical and mental strength as well as fitness. Many elderly people who are physically fit can sail through the trekking journey while some young people give up due to lack of fitness. It is always advised to travel in a group of 8-10 people especially when you are doing a trekking trip so that everybody can motivate everybody else in the team in difficult terrains. Since tour guides mostly accompany groups during their trekking journey, you should not be worried about medical problems as they have emergency medical kits and services available with them 24*7. People with altitude sickness and motion sickness must avoid trekking trips in the mountains as they will be struggling with their health all the time and will not be able to enjoy the trip to its fullest. Apart from some special sicknesses, most people with good mental and physical health can take these trips because Bhutan trekking trips are considered to be one of the best trekking trips in the world and people who can take up, should go and see some of the most beautiful mountains, valleys and breath-taking sceneries of their lives in Bhutan. The gears and necessary equipment mentioned above must be carried throughout the trip so that the whole journey is comfortable and there are no discomforts whatsoever due to health and other emergencies.

The months of October and November are ideal for Bhutan trekking tours, as are the end of March through the middle of May. Bhutan only has a short, 1 1/2 month-long trekking season during the first part of the year.

Due to Bhutan's mountainous terrain in the Himalayas, the treks in Bhutan are characterized by continuous elevation changes, either uphill or downhill. Furthermore, the surroundings undergo constant transformations and maintain lower temperatures.

According to professionals from Bhutan peaceful tours and treks, you must maintain a healthy physical and mental state by engaging in different physical activities. Train yourself to get a good night's sleep, and drink enough water or other liquids to stay hydrated.

Since the terrain is hilly in Bhutan and the weather is constantly changing, you must bring all necessary and emergency items like medicines, sunscreen, trekking boots, warm clothes, flashlight and raincoat in your Bhutan trekking holidays

One of the major reasons why trekking in Bhutan is extremely popular is because it offers you the opportunity to visit remote mountainous regions of the Eastern Himalayas which looks and feel astonishing

Thimphu Tshechu, Paro Tshechu, Jambay Lhakhang Drup Festival, Haa Summer Festival and Punakha Drubchen are the top festivals in Bhutan that travellers going for Bhutan festival tours must not miss.

Tshechu is celebrated on the tenth day of a month of the Lunar Calendar, to honour Guru Rinpoche (Padmasambhava), who brought a Tantric form of Buddhism to Bhutan in the 8th century

When visiting Bhutan, you may always take in a cultural event because there are an astounding amount of festivals held there all year long. However, it is advised to check the most recent Bhutan festival calendar before you travel if you want to attend specific festivals.

Apart from the citizens of India, Bangladesh, and the Maldives, the rest of the tourists must get a visa to enter Butuan.

It is suggested that you choose a lesser-known festival if you want a more personal experience of the events. Do not broach taboo or some sensitive matters, even though your tour guide will sincerely introduce Bhutan's religion, culture, and other things you might be interested in learning about.

Discover the wonders of the kingdom of Bhutan

Explore the landscape, history, and culture of this small nation that's one of Asia's best kept secrets.

Tucked in between the spiritual hubs of Tibet and India lies the small country of Bhutan known for being the world’s only carbon negative country, having a capital city with no street lights, and a government that measures the country’s success by GNH: Gross National Happiness. Only recently open to international travel, Bhutan remains relatively unknown but is one of Asia’s best kept secrets when it comes to hiking and trekking vacations .

More About Bhutan

As we said above, Bhutan is the world’s only carbon negative country, meaning that the trees in Bhutan absorb more carbon dioxide than the country produces. Sixty percent of the country’s land is protected forest and much of the rest is the foothills (if you can call 20,000 ft tall mountains foothills) of the Himalayas, rising out of the lowlands and valleys in the southern part of the country. A land of spirituality and community, Bhutan is unique in many ways and boasts a fascinating culture to experience.

In order to ensure that tourism is sustainable, the Kingdom of Bhutan has put very strict limits in place for outside travel, so visiting with a tour group is your only option for seeing this amazing country. On tours to Bhutan with Intrepid, everything is included from all the meals to your lodging and transportation as well as a local guide. The Trans Bhutan Trail is newly refurbished and takes travelers passed mountain villages filled with friendly locals, ancient monasteries perched precariously atop cliffs, and stunning scenery with deep gorges and the soaring Himalayas. You’ll get to explore some of the country’s major cities and stroll through museums and street markets, all the while soaking up the rich cultural heritage here. There are also many Dzongs to explore on hiking trips in Bhutan which are fortified monasteries, some of which are still in use today. Completely immerse yourself in this small but unique nation’s culture and way of life by walking in the footsteps of those who came before you.

Our grading system explained

What makes bhutan so special.

Known as the ‘Kingdom of the Thunder Dragon’ by its people, Bhutan is a beautiful and profoundly spiritual country with striking mountains, vibrant Buddhist festivals and a fascinating traditional way of life. Whether you go on a cultural tour of Bhutan or a trekking holiday into its hidden valleys, Mountain Kingdoms is the Himalayan specialist with the expertise to give you an unforgettable experience and offers the very best cultural tours of Bhutan, trekking holidays and tailor made holidays to Bhutan in 2023 and 2024 and beyond.

Our walking and trekking tours in Bhutan will take you deep into the isolated mountains and valleys of the country. Our high mountain treks focus on trekking amidst the highest peaks and passes in Bhutan; other trekking holiday routes stray off-the-beaten-track, following old trade and smuggling routes rarely visited by foreigners.

Tours in Bhutan typically revolve around one of the country’s many fascinating Buddhist festivals with amazing displays of national celebration and religious devotion. Our Bhutan tours also give you a unique opportunity to visit remote villages and experience the traditional Bhutanese way of life.

Whatever you want from your visit to this unique country, Mountain Kingdoms will have a trek or tour for you, and, if we don’t, we can always help you to design your own! Alongside our standard itineraries, we also offer Tailor Made holidays to Bhutan, allowing us to create the perfect trip to suit your needs. Whether you take a trekking holiday along Bhutan’s ancient trade routes, climb the highest mountains, explore remote villages or take a tour of Bhutan’s main cultural centres and sights, a trek, tour or Tailor Made holiday in Bhutan will take you right to the heart of the Kingdom of the Thunder Dragon.

Mountain Kingdoms has been organising cultural tours and walking and trekking holidays to Bhutan for more than 30 years, so we know the country inside out.

The tiny Kingdom of Bhutan in the eastern Himalaya, has successfully remained isolated from the outside world for many centuries. It is a land of supernatural legends, ancient monastery fortresses and, even today, the Bhutanese people live their lives according to time-honoured cultural traditions and deeply held Buddhist beliefs.

Our Definitive Cultural Tour of Bhutan will take you 'under the skin' of Bhutanese society into the interior of the Thunder Dragon kingdom. You’ll have the chance to visit villages, monasteries and any festivals that may be taking place. You can also discover the Kingdom on two wheels on our Cultural Cycling Tour of Bhutan .

The hills and valleys of Bhutan offer a superb range of walking and trekking tours with paths that will take you to secluded villages, past crumbling temples and through deep forested valleys. For easy-paced walking holidays that combine superlative scenery with visits to the key cultural sights our Gentle Walking Bhutan or Gentle Walking Eastern Bhutan won't disappoint.

For more energetic exertions, Bhutan offers a full range of trekking experiences. The Druk Path Trek makes an excellent first Bhutan trekking holiday taking you through magnificent mountain country between Paro and Thimphu. You can also trek into the Hidden Valleys of Bhutan - spending some nights in traditional farmhouse homestays for a really authentic experience.

For the serious trekker, the high mountains of Bhutan provide a magnificent and rewarding challenge. The base camp at Mount Chomolhari is a great first objective, but push on over high passes on our Lingshi Laya Trek and you will reach the remote villages of Lingshi and Laya where you’re sure to get a warm welcome. And, if you’re feeling extra adventurous then the Lunana Snowman Trek is undoubtedly the ultimate Himalayan trekking challenge. You can also embark on a journey of discovery on our Rodang La Eastern Bhutan trekking holiday that ventures into the least visited areas of Bhutan following an ancient trading route.

From gentle walking and easy-paced tours to a challenging trek, Bhutan rewards all visitors with a wonderful holiday.

When is the best time to travel to Bhutan?

bhutan trekking tours

The best time to visit Bhutan is in the spring and autumn. In the spring months of March, April and May you are likely to see blue skies and warm sunshine in the mornings with a build-up of cloud in the afternoon. During the spring months the beautiful rhododendron and magnolia will be in full bloom bringing a wealth of colour to many walking trails. Temperatures can be hot when the sun is out so we would advise wearing sunscreen and a sunhat – especially at higher altitudes. The Paro festival is also held in the spring at Paro Dzong and many of our group holidays include a visit to the festival.

Autumn is considered to be the very best time to visit Bhutan. At this time of the year skies are generally clear with little cloud and rain and the temperatures are lovely and warm; ideal weather for walking or trekking in Bhutan. With the passing of the summer rains, the valleys are lush and verdant and many of Bhutan’s unique species of flora can be seen at their best. Autumn is also the season when the impressive Thimphu tsechu is held.

For more information about Bhutan’s festivals, and when they are held see our festival blog . Some of our group holidays are timed to festivals and we can also organise a Tailor Made holiday to include time at a tsechu.

In winter in Bhutan, the days are generally dry, clear and bright, though the evenings will be cold, and high passes can be blocked by snow. Although a high-altitude trek may not be possible, winter can be a great time to visit Bhutan on a cultural tour or gentle walking holiday , as there are fewer tourists. Bhutan is also a great option for those looking to book a Christmas getaway. It is possible to travel to Bhutan throughout much of the year, but as our climate charts indicate, the summer months are the monsoon season so the weather is hot and humid with heavy rainfall. We therefore don’t organise any of our group holidays to depart in June, July or August.

It should be noted that the great variations in elevation in Bhutan have a significant impact on temperature and rainfall. The lower altitudes in the south of the country bring a more tropical climate with the greatest precipitation. Whilst the Himalayan north is colder all year round and the highest peaks permanently covered in snow. Even in the central region of Bhutan, where most tourists visit, the higher you are the cooler it will feel. We therefore recommend carrying a couple of additional layers with you, including a good waterproof, windproof jacket, especially if you are out walking.

Whatever time of year you choose to travel to Bhutan we have a comprehensive range of small group tours, treks, walking and cycling holidays, or we can create the perfect Tailor Made Bhutan holiday for you.

The sacred Taktsang Monastery in Bhutan is also referred to as the Tiger's Nest monastery. | Richard I'Anson

Set on the eastern ridges of the mighty Himalaya and sandwiched between Tibet and India, a trip to Bhutan is a travel dream for many. Dramatic scenery, winding mountain passes, snow-capped peaks, fluttering prayer flags and vibrant rhododendrons are the backdrop for a colourful culture steeped in religion and mythology.

Here in the Land of the Thunder Dragon, you can hike through stunning valleys and across rugged high passes, visit isolated villages and explore the countless dzongs (fortresses) and tiny Buddhist monasteries that dot the landscape. Then, visit the unforgettable "Tiger's Nest", the sacred Taktsang Monastery that clings dramatically to the side of a steep, forest-studded granite cliff.

Trek through the picturesque Paro Valley to the base of Chomolhari, Bhutan's second highest mountain, crossing glacial streams and observing the majestic peaks of the Himalaya through a frame of colourful rhododendron blooms. Or be one of the few people each year to join our challenging Bhutan Snowman Trek, ranked as one of the greatest treks in the Himalaya, as it weaves a path through the most remote region of Bhutan.

Explore local culture and shop for beautiful textiles and handicrafts in Thimpu, Bhutan's delightful capital; take in the dancing, cheering and drama of a traditional Bhutanese archery tournament; or watch local history and mythology come alive at Bumthang's Jambay Lakhang festival.

Whichever Bhutan trip you choose; you'll be captivated by the stunning landscapes, ancient culture and humble people of Bhutan.

Thoughtful Travel

Responsible travel practice is at the heart of every program that we offer in Bhutan, where we pioneered the 10-Pieces initiative. When you book one of our adventures you're supporting a program that is committed to safety and sustainability.

Bhutan Litter collection program

The 10 Pieces litter collection initiative is offered on the Chomolhari Base Camp Trek. Trekkers volunteer to collect 10 pieces of litter that they find on the trail each day, which is then disposed of responsibly. This is a simple and effective way to harness the collective power of tourists to keep Bhutan's wilderness trails clean and educate local communities about the negative impact of litter on their environment.

Animal welfare focus

We advocate for cruelty free animal encounters, encouraging travellers to follow the guidelines in our comprehensive Animal Welfare Code of Conduct as we seek to inform stakeholders about animal welfare matters.

Child safe tourism

Children working and living in tourist areas are especially vulnerable to physical, emotional and sexual abuse. We protect vulnerable children by adhering to our Child Protection Code of Conduct.

Wilderness camping

Enjoy fully supported camping in remote locations across Bhutan with our outstanding Bhutanese crew. While the campsite locations have been handpicked for their location, our commitment to responsible travel ensures our footprint is kept to a minimum.

In cities and large towns you will be accommodated in good quality properties that are centrally located, atmospheric and reliable.

Bhutan has an extremely diverse climate profile for a country of its size, owing to both its highly varied altitude and the influence of the north Indian monsoons.

The country can be divided into three broad physiographic zones: the cold alpine peaks and tundra of the Great Himalayas to the north; the temperate mountain valleys of Lesser Himalayas region in central Bhutan; and the subtropical foothills and floodplains of the Duars Plain in the south.

The capital of Thimphu, in central-west Bhutan, is the only place in Bhutan to experience temperature conditions. Winter temperatures in Thimphu usually range between 2°C (35°F) and 12°C (53°F) in January. In July, summer temperatures range from 13°C (55°F) to 19°C (66°F). The north of the country experiences extreme cold and generally dry conditions, and the south, extreme heat and significant rainfall.

Bhutan, like eastern Nepal, comes under the influence of the Indian monsoon from late May to mid-September and Bhutan receives more rain during the monsoon than other Himalayan regions (up to 5.5 metres a year).

The ideal time to visit Bhutan is either pre-monsoon from mid-March when the winter snow has begun to melt off the high passes, until the end of May; or post-monsoon, from October to mid-November.

Temperatures can vary considerably depending on your elevation but as a guideline, temperatures in Thimphu in April/May and October range from around 5°C (41°F) to around 25°C (77°F).

Time in Bhutan

Bhutan is UTC/GMT +6 hours

Dzongkha (official); Sharchhopka; Lhotshamkha; Nepali and English widely spoken in more populated areas; 1% of population make up a variety of different ethnic groups each with own languages.

Ngultrum (Divided into chetrums)

US DOLLARS cash is the main currency of exchange for tourists in Bhutan, with the AUD & EUR also widely accepted in major cities and at the airport. Exchange rates for 50 and 100 notes is better than for smaller denominations. Internationally recognised credit cards can be used for bigger purchases when shopping.

There are now some ATM’s in Bhutan however, these are not reliable, and often for the use of locals only.

Ngulstrum cannot be changed back when you depart nor used outside of Bhutan, so keep this in mind in your calculations.

International Dialing Code

Type C plug

Electricity in Bhutan is 230 Volts, at 50 hertz. The pin type varies but is most commonly types C, D and G. We recommend taking a universal adapter.

Electricity is widely available throughout Bhutan though generally speaking the further you venture from the trailhead the less reliable it becomes. More populous areas are serviced by the grid or small scale hydro-electric projects. In more remote areas solar energy is harnessed for electricity production and as such can be unreliable and in short supply.

When camping there is often no facility for charging of electronic devices we recommend you consider purchasing portable power banks or solar chargers for phone charging and at least one spare camera battery.

The cost of your Bhutanese visa is included in your trip cost and we will arrange this for you prior to your arrival. The visa process for Bhutan requires a scanned colour copy of your passport to be sent to us. In addition, a recent digital passport photo (ideally in JPEG format) is required. Please provide your passport copy and digital passport photograph on booking so your visa can be arranged, the sooner the better given the time required for visa approvals. Following the processing of your visa we will provide you with a clearance letter/e visa to enable you to board the plane from your respective airport; you will then receive a stamped visa upon arrival at Paro airport. You must carry the visa approval letter with you as you will be required to show this when checking in for your flight into Paro.

NOTE:- Please be aware that it is very usual that we do not receive visa clearance numbers from the Bhutanese government until the week of travel, sometimes 1 or 2 days before departure date. If you have already left on your travels prior to receiving the visa clearance number, then the visa will be emailed to you shortly before departure date. Please ensure that we have your correct and up-to-date email and contact details.

What our Travelers Had to Say

This November, I spent 4 days exploring Bhutan. In that time I came to realise just how special this unique kingdom is and I hope to convey that realisation in this video. My trip was organised by Raven Tours and Treks. I had my own private guide who was very well informed and had extensive knowledge to answer all my questions – no matter if they were political, religious or even personal. ”

The 10 best countries for solo travel – and top tips for travelling alone

W hile travelling with friends, family or a partner can be a great way to spend quality time with loved ones, embracing alone time can open the door to a wealth of new cultures and experiences .

Solo holidays can range from short-haul city breaks to bucket-list backpacking adventures and active excursions closer to home.

But where to start? Holidays for a party of one are more popular than ever in 2024, though inconsistent pricing and solo supplements can be discouraging for those new to lone adventuring.

And, while solo travellers may end up  paying more  for holidays thanks to single occupancy rates, the freedom of choice without the burden of compromise is thrown in for free.

From dining with the locals in Vietnam to guided tours of the Golden Circle in Iceland , there are myriad destinations well-suited to travellers looking to go it alone.

Here are some top countries for solo travel, plus tips to plan and execute a successful trip of self-discovery.

Best for: Singles city breaks

What better way to kick start a solo adventure than with a long weekend in a city that embraces the essence of  hygge  (a feeling of comfort and contentment)? Alfresco summers meet cosy winters in Denmark and, while Scandinavian prices can be eye-wateringly expensive, it’s not impossible to pull off a city break on a budget.

Eastern capital Copenhagen is consistent in its happy atmosphere, low crime rate and world-renowned cuisine. From budget hot dog stands laden with pickled condiments to the tasting menu at three Michelin-starred restaurant Geranium, gourmet food joints pepper the candle-lit streets. Experience “faellesspisning” or communal eating – affordable bites in the charming company of strangers – if you’re a solo traveller looking to socialise.

Make your money go even further by joining in with laid-back Scandi culture and renting a bike, staying in buzzing hostels such as the central Danhostel and purchasing a Copenhagen Card to get money off attractions, including a boat tour of the city’s canals.

Free activities such as walking along waterfront neighbourhood Nyhavn and catching a summer sunset from the opera house are also facilitated by an efficient ‘S-tog’ train network and buses.

And there’s more to Denmark than its effortlessly stylish capital. Visit Odense for a Hans Christian Anderson literary experience fans of The Little Mermaid will love, and take in the multitude of architecture in the old Viking fishing village-turned-second city, Aarhus, for an insight into to Danish history.

Best for: Solo island hopping

Thailand is a welcoming haven for single party animals or beach bums travelling the well-trodden backpacking trail through  southeast Asia .

A solo slice of Thai comes with an affordable price tag once you’re there. Trains, buses, long-tail boats and tuk-tuks transport travellers to the street food of lively night markets and cooking schools well versed in pad Thai and gaeng daeng for just a few pounds, while there are plentiful cheap and cheerful hostels to stay in, helping solo travellers meet new people and save in accommodation costs.

Culture-stacked cities like  Bangkok  meet jungle-clad interiors in a fusion of thrilling nightlife, rejuvenating yoga ashrams and authentic Buddhist temples.

Island hopping across isolated archipelagos is also often a staple of a tourist’s Thailand itinerary. With 1,430  islands  to choose from, including  Phuket  and the Phi Phi on the emerald waters of the Andaman Sea, try Koh Samui for safe, sociable hostels including  The Rock Samui  and catch the ferry to Koh Phangan to experience festival-style nights at a bucket-list full moon party.

Best for: Personal safety

Find peace of mind travelling alone in clean, safe cities as you experience first-hand the Japanese culture of kindness and respect. Crime and harassment are rare and the efficient train network even features women-only carriages .

Master of hi-tech and hub of creative fashion, Tokyo is the ideal place to start your first solo trip to Japan, but its glitzy tapestry of skyscrapers and all-night karaoke isn’t the only bit you should experience.

Venture to Kyoto via the revolutionary bullet trains to regroup in the ethereal landscapes surrounding Mount Fuji. In spring, the city is awash with pink as the cherry blossoms bloom and rural temple tours tempt visitors into serene Japanese gardens to experience customary tea ceremonies. Ski slopes in Hokkaidō are also great for snowsports enthuiasts.

While not the cheapest destination for holidaymakers on this list, travellers can save on expenses by picking up food from Japan’s extensive variety of vending machines, 100-yen stores and Japanese Rail passes . Capsule hotels like the Nine Hours chain and traditional ryokan rooms with hot springs offer classic Japanese zen in rural areas and the city at affordable prices.

What's more, eating alone is celebrated as the norm at casual restaurants familiar with seating tables for one, while language difficulties are usually met with polite patience.

Best for: Short-haul travel

Swerve language barriers and long stints in the air with a holiday to visit our  Irish  neighbours. The Emerald Isle has forged a reputation as a home from home for British travellers, whether they get there by hopping on a ferry or a flight.

Crumbling castles, rambling countryside and live music await; from  Dublin  to Cork and Limerick, cosmopolitan cities sit side by side with verdant landscapes blessed with an abundance of  walking  and cycling routes that are fun to explore as a lone ranger.

Dublin houses more cultural wonders than the famous Guinness Storehouse – nurse a  proper pint  in traditional old-stone Dublin pub away from tourist favourite, Temple Bar, and discover why the Irish capital is the Unesco city of literature.

Eslewhere, solo day trips can include the beauty of the Cliffs of Moher and the busy shops of Graton Street. The best way to get around is by car, and hiring your own is advisable for road trips to more remote areas such as  Galway  and the Aran Islands.

Best for: Social travellers

A favourite with backpackers,  Vietnam’s  well-established tourist route takes the hassle out of planning for solo travellers eager to buddy up along the way.

Hue’s imperial citadel, capital  Hanoi’s French colonial villas, wartime relics including the Cu Chi tunnels, blissful beaches on Phu Quoc Island and rainbow lanterns at Hoi An’s monthly full moon festival all make Vietnam a compelling destination.

Solo tourists can hop on the back of a motorbike with a local for a tour of the chaotic  Ho Chi Minh City , or cruise to the limestone islands of Unesco-listed Ha Long Bay on targeted excursions for like-minded travellers.

In this wallet-friendly southeast Asian country, easy-to-navigate transport networks, overnight buses that take you down the otherworldly coast, and a sociable, hostel-heavy accommodation scene with bargain price tags add up to a destination that’s ideal for lone travellers keen to make friends.

Best for: Self-discovery

Canada , famed for its friendly people with a knack for warm hospitality, is the ideal place for a lone globetrotter to switch off and get back to nature.

Th world's second biggest country balances cosmopolitan cities with unspoilt, remote wilderness. You’ll be greeted with trendy bars in Toronto and the urban oasis of Stanley Park in waterfront Vancouver , while road trips across the North American giant take you through expansive landscapes, mountain peaks and dazzlingly blue lakes.

A treasure trove of outdoorsy activities can be enjoyed year-round, from skiing and snowboarding in Whistler to kayaking, ice hockey and hiking amid the enchanting glacial lakes and grizzly bears of Banff National Park and the vast Rocky Mountains.

Best for: Off-grid adventures

Iceland is guaranteed to squash any feelings of boredom with its extensive menu of outdoor activities, from snowmobiling to horse riding and hikes in the rugged volcanic landscape.

Aptly nicknamed the “Land of Ice and Fire”, Iceland is a playground for nature enthusiasts to go off-grid solo. Black sand beaches, waterfalls, sapphire glaciers and the geysers of the Golden Circle ring road are all natural thrills in this largely safe and friendly country.

Think whale watching during the midnight sun, hunting the colourful waltz of the Northern Lights and the famous milky waters of the Blue Lagoon spa on a solo city break to the capital, Reykjavik .

Best for: Female solo travellers

In the heart of Europe, Slovenia’s small size and charming spirit make it a hit with female solo travellers.

A fairly priced public transport network facilitates travel between cities and English is widely spoken, enabling easier exploration of Slovenia’s beautiful scenery.

Leafy Ljubljana , the capital, is a tangle of terracotta riverside cafes, markets and family-owned restaurants offering sheep cheeses, struklji rolls and orange wines.

But Slovenia’s crowning jewel is its famous lakes fringed with traditional, pretty villages. Lake Bled, for example, is home to medieval castles, wild swimming opportunities and traditional plenta boat rides.

New Zealand

Best for: hiking holidays.

There’s nowhere like  New Zealand  for a hiking holiday off the beaten path, and it’s ideal for solo adrenaline seekers, thanks to its peaceful and safe reputation.

The English-speaking Pacific paradise offers working holiday opportunities for those looking to secure a travel visa, plus bucket-list activities such as helicopter rides, whale watching and bungee jumping fill a prolonged stopover.

From the home of  hobbits in Rotorua to cruising to the waterfalls of Milford Sounds by boat and exploring the Maori culture of vibrant Christchurch, New Zealand is well worth the ultra-long journey.

In between days spent amid its film-worthy natural landscapes, head to Auckland to climb Mount Eden and the Sky Tower for panoramic city views, or visit the fine wine regions of Waiheke Island, known for their Sauvignon Blancs.

Best for: Culture and cuisine

An unspoiled country closed to tourists until 1974,  Bhutan  is a surprisingly popular destination for a solo holiday.

With a confection of cultural wonders in lush green valleys, fortresses and traditional villages, the Himalayan country appeals to single travellers lusting to step back in time.

Find Bhutanese-style red-roofed houses in the quiet capital of Thimphu, yak herding in Laya and the cliff-hugging Tiger’s Nest Monastery at home in harmonious Paro – not forgetting delicious momo dumplings.

The landlocked nation is ideal for trekking after the 403km long Trans Bhutan Trail reopened in 2022; the mountain kingdom can be explored on private tours with a local guide.

Bhutan’s Buddhist culture has a focus on sustainability that permeates all levels of life, particularly in strict tourism regulations. Factor the country’s steep  tourism tax , designed to deter budget travellers and preserve Bhutan’s heritage, into your trip costs –now $800 (£627) for a traveller staying eight days.

Top 10 tips for solo travellers

  • Do your research: take your time to plan ahead before leaving for a solo trip
  • Be safety conscious: don’t share your specific location online while you’re still there, be aware of your surroundings and stay connected with people at home about your travel plans
  • Be flexible: spontaneous plans are sometimes the best kind and things going “wrong” often lead to the most memorable experiences
  • Try something new: whether local cuisines or a new activity, push yourself out of your comfort zone to get the most out of travelling solo
  • Stay in a hostel: this can be the best way to meet new and likeminded people for social butterflies
  • Learn to love your own company: there’s a freedom to alone time
  • Practice local phrases: a “please” and “thank you” in the local language go a long way
  • Utilise public transport: don’t blow your budget on Ubers and taxis if you don’t have to
  • Bring back-up: printed documents, portable chargers, emergency cash and travel insurance are solo travel essentials
  • Don’t overpack: don’t fall at the first hurdle by bringing your entire wardrobe

Savvino-storozhevsky monastery and museum.

Savvino-Storozhevsky Monastery and Museum

Zvenigorod's most famous sight is the Savvino-Storozhevsky Monastery, which was founded in 1398 by the monk Savva from the Troitse-Sergieva Lavra, at the invitation and with the support of Prince Yury Dmitrievich of Zvenigorod. Savva was later canonised as St Sabbas (Savva) of Storozhev. The monastery late flourished under the reign of Tsar Alexis, who chose the monastery as his family church and often went on pilgrimage there and made lots of donations to it. Most of the monastery’s buildings date from this time. The monastery is heavily fortified with thick walls and six towers, the most impressive of which is the Krasny Tower which also serves as the eastern entrance. The monastery was closed in 1918 and only reopened in 1995. In 1998 Patriarch Alexius II took part in a service to return the relics of St Sabbas to the monastery. Today the monastery has the status of a stauropegic monastery, which is second in status to a lavra. In addition to being a working monastery, it also holds the Zvenigorod Historical, Architectural and Art Museum.

Belfry and Neighbouring Churches

bhutan trekking tours

Located near the main entrance is the monastery's belfry which is perhaps the calling card of the monastery due to its uniqueness. It was built in the 1650s and the St Sergius of Radonezh’s Church was opened on the middle tier in the mid-17th century, although it was originally dedicated to the Trinity. The belfry's 35-tonne Great Bladgovestny Bell fell in 1941 and was only restored and returned in 2003. Attached to the belfry is a large refectory and the Transfiguration Church, both of which were built on the orders of Tsar Alexis in the 1650s.

bhutan trekking tours

To the left of the belfry is another, smaller, refectory which is attached to the Trinity Gate-Church, which was also constructed in the 1650s on the orders of Tsar Alexis who made it his own family church. The church is elaborately decorated with colourful trims and underneath the archway is a beautiful 19th century fresco.

Nativity of Virgin Mary Cathedral

bhutan trekking tours

The Nativity of Virgin Mary Cathedral is the oldest building in the monastery and among the oldest buildings in the Moscow Region. It was built between 1404 and 1405 during the lifetime of St Sabbas and using the funds of Prince Yury of Zvenigorod. The white-stone cathedral is a standard four-pillar design with a single golden dome. After the death of St Sabbas he was interred in the cathedral and a new altar dedicated to him was added.

bhutan trekking tours

Under the reign of Tsar Alexis the cathedral was decorated with frescoes by Stepan Ryazanets, some of which remain today. Tsar Alexis also presented the cathedral with a five-tier iconostasis, the top row of icons have been preserved.

Tsaritsa's Chambers

bhutan trekking tours

The Nativity of Virgin Mary Cathedral is located between the Tsaritsa's Chambers of the left and the Palace of Tsar Alexis on the right. The Tsaritsa's Chambers were built in the mid-17th century for the wife of Tsar Alexey - Tsaritsa Maria Ilinichna Miloskavskaya. The design of the building is influenced by the ancient Russian architectural style. Is prettier than the Tsar's chambers opposite, being red in colour with elaborately decorated window frames and entrance.

bhutan trekking tours

At present the Tsaritsa's Chambers houses the Zvenigorod Historical, Architectural and Art Museum. Among its displays is an accurate recreation of the interior of a noble lady's chambers including furniture, decorations and a decorated tiled oven, and an exhibition on the history of Zvenigorod and the monastery.

Palace of Tsar Alexis

bhutan trekking tours

The Palace of Tsar Alexis was built in the 1650s and is now one of the best surviving examples of non-religious architecture of that era. It was built especially for Tsar Alexis who often visited the monastery on religious pilgrimages. Its most striking feature is its pretty row of nine chimney spouts which resemble towers.

The Unique Burial of a Child of Early Scythian Time at the Cemetery of Saryg-Bulun (Tuva)

<< Previous page

Pages:  379-406

In 1988, the Tuvan Archaeological Expedition (led by M. E. Kilunovskaya and V. A. Semenov) discovered a unique burial of the early Iron Age at Saryg-Bulun in Central Tuva. There are two burial mounds of the Aldy-Bel culture dated by 7th century BC. Within the barrows, which adjoined one another, forming a figure-of-eight, there were discovered 7 burials, from which a representative collection of artifacts was recovered. Burial 5 was the most unique, it was found in a coffin made of a larch trunk, with a tightly closed lid. Due to the preservative properties of larch and lack of air access, the coffin contained a well-preserved mummy of a child with an accompanying set of grave goods. The interred individual retained the skin on his face and had a leather headdress painted with red pigment and a coat, sewn from jerboa fur. The coat was belted with a leather belt with bronze ornaments and buckles. Besides that, a leather quiver with arrows with the shafts decorated with painted ornaments, fully preserved battle pick and a bow were buried in the coffin. Unexpectedly, the full-genomic analysis, showed that the individual was female. This fact opens a new aspect in the study of the social history of the Scythian society and perhaps brings us back to the myth of the Amazons, discussed by Herodotus. Of course, this discovery is unique in its preservation for the Scythian culture of Tuva and requires careful study and conservation.

Keywords: Tuva, Early Iron Age, early Scythian period, Aldy-Bel culture, barrow, burial in the coffin, mummy, full genome sequencing, aDNA
