Live Review: New Order and Pet Shop Boys @ Merriweather Post Pavilion — 9/21/22

Live Review: New Order and Pet Shop Boys @ Merriweather Post Pavilion — 9/21/22

New Order and the Pet Shop Boys, two revered English synthpop bands, joined forces for an irresistible double bill, hailed The Unity Tour, which surfaced at Merriweather Post Pavilion outside DC not long ago.

The highly anticipated tour was twice postponed due to complications of touring during the high prevalence of COVID-19 over the past two years. With the rescheduled date landing in the midst of a high season of very good concerts, I wondered if the final show would stand out from the crowd as well.

I need not have wondered. The New Order Mancs showed so much heart and grit and the PSB Londoners brought plenty of brains and style — and the combined power of their twin performances undoubtedly produced the very best concert of the year.

At Merriweather Post Pavilion on Sept. 21, New Order took the stage first. Frontman Bernard Sumner stood before a microphone in the center of the stage to open the show with “Regret,” the single that helped put ’80s stalwarts New Order back on the musical map in 1993. From the very first notes, the song sounded like sweet deliverance, here to elevate the musical conversation and wholly transport our material selves into its remarkable rhythm.

Watch the official music video for “Regret” by New Order on YouTube:

At 66, Barney looked dignified, official. But his voice was as timeless as ever. Part of the transportive magic of New Order was that Benard as frontman could easily wind you back to the early days of the band, formed in 1980 after the dissolution of Joy Division. As a musical icon, Barney stands immutable. The not-so-on-purpose disaffection in his vocal created an ideal blend with the synths and percussion of his bandmates, and he almost seemed to conduct the show from his guitar.

There was no denying that Barney performed from the heart. As the show proceeded, he let loose and lost himself in the music. At the one-third mark, New Order picked up “Your Silent Face,” a wonderfully inviting but also maudlin tune that appeared on the band’s sophomore album, Power, Corruption, and Lies. Sumner paced to the back of the stage and retrieved a melodica for the song’s unforgettable bridge. As he played it, the years seemed to fade away, and you could see a younger man behind Bernard’s spectacles.

Both New Order and the Pet Shop Boys came to town ready to totally knock us out, and New Order deliberately and definitively hit their targets. The band’s triumphant final quarter included titanic new wave/house numbers that still stand above the fray in their genres: “True Faith” from their 1987 career compilation Substance; “Blue Monday,” their early groundbreaking single; and “Temptation,” another giant single that helped to permanently seal New Order’s fate as perenially hip and also decisively poignant.

Watch the official music video for “Temptation” by New Order on YouTube:

For their last song, New Order played “Love Will Tear Us Apart,” highly regarded as the greatest post-punk tune of all time, and certainly the one song (at least) that ensures Joy Division will be forever remembered.

While Barney dominated the show as the face of the band, his longtime bandmates Gillian Gilbert and Stephen Morris also were a sight and sound for sore eyes and ears. The two set to work methodically with a central focus on their instruments, and their presence imparted a warmth to their highly technical instrumentation. Together, New Order stand as giants, and their music still packs the punchy delirium it has always carried.

Following New Order, the Pet Shop Boys began their part of the concert with “Suburbia,” which hails from the duo’s debut album, Please. PSB apparently allowed “Suburbia” to inspire their show’s primary stage setting, a platform set between two streetlight fixtures that generated the illusion of being on a well-lit, if vaguely futuristic, neighborhood curb. Clad initially in a trenchcoat, PSB frontman Neil Tennant appeared sophisticated and aloof throughout the show, a spirit initially augmented by masks that looked like tuning forks adorning his and Chris’ faces. Neil, however, addressed the audience frankly and directly with enthusiasm, and his pleasure in performing was quite evident.

Watch the official music video for “Suburbia” by Pet Shop Boys on YouTube:

In many ways, the Pet Shop Boys are the polar opposite of New Order. New Order began from another band formed when its core members were quite young. Over the last 30 years, their output has diminished quite a bit from their ’80s heyday, when New Order dominated with consistent record releases. By contrast, the Pet Shop Boys formed after Neil as a journalist reported on the emergent post-punk and new wave scene and gained musical ambitions himself. Since the publication of their first studio album in 1986, the Pet Shops Boys have remained steadily prolific. In the past 10 years, the duo has released three excellent albums, all produced by Stuart Price. From these records, they performed Electric’s “Vocal” and Hotspot’s “Dreamland,” both toward the end of the show on Sept. 21.

Over the course of the concert, Neil and synthesist Chris Lowe consistently returned to their first three albums. After opening with Please’s “Suburbia,” they soon played “Opportunities (Let’s Make Lots of Money),” at which point Neil discarded his tuning fork mask to sing declaratively with power and passion. PSB later excited the large and bustling audience with “West End Girls” in the encore, which saw them in a costume change that suggested their “old-school” appearances — Neil in a business suit and Chris in a tracksuit.

Watch the official music video for “West End Girls” by Pet Shop Boys on YouTube:

The band roused revelers with “It’s a Sin” from sophomore album Actually as the last song in the set and amazed all listeners with “Being Boring” from third album Behavior in the encore. Neil’s voice was simply beautiful. He and Chris both sounded great. The raw talent of their performance was cloaked a bit in the theatrical presentation of their show, which actually involved two costume and set changes, but their showmanship and their musicality totally shined through everything else around them. The Pet Shop Boys were nothing less than utterly magnificent.

Together with their unparalleled display of heart and brains, New Order and Pet Shop Boys delivered the best concert of the year, hands down. Indeed, there is no doubt I’ll revisit this show for years to come in my thoughts, and it will continually produce happy memories of seeing two of my favorite bands remaining at the top of their game more than 40 years into their careers. You are synthpop royalty, New Order and Pet Shop Boys, and long may you reign.

The Unity Tour continues with North American dates through Oct. 16. We urge you to catch these two legendary bands together while you can.

Things to Do

Music and concerts, music and concerts | concert review: pet shop boys and new order fill the armory with fans giddy for synthpop classics.

Pet Shop Boys in concert

Pet Shop Boys and New Order announced their joint North American tour back in February 2020, just weeks before the world went into pandemic shutdown. Two and a half years later, they finally made it to Minneapolis – one of just 13 shows on the tour – and it was well worth the wait.

Both acts emerged from England in the ’80s with unique takes on pop music. Pet Shop Boys made songs that were witty, arch and quite gay (even though lead singer Neil Tennant didn’t publicly come out until 1994 and keyboardist Chris Lowe has never discussed his sexuality). New Order, meanwhile, rose out of the ashes of the post punk band Joy Division (whose lead singer Ian Curtis took his own life the day before the band’s first U.S. tour) and fused guitars and a bass played like a guitar with electronics.

The combined draw of the two acts – who are swapping spots each night – allowed them to play a significantly larger-than-usual venue. PSB’s three previous local shows took place at the State and Orpheum theaters, while New Order’s sole Minnesota concert of the 21st century happened at the Palace Theatre in 2018.

Sunday night, Pet Shop Boys took the stage just before 7:30 p.m. after a set from legendary DJ Paul Oakenfold (who returned for a second set before New Order). At 68, Tennant is the oldest musician on the tour, but he still exudes youthful energy. And, as always, Lowe played the role of stoic sidekick, mostly standing still behind his keyboards and barely acknowledging anything going around him, including the crowd.

Over the past 36 years, Pet Shop Boys have maintained a prolific career with 14 studio albums, more than 70 singles and a host of other projects. But the pair had never mounted a greatest hits tour until this summer in Europe. The current dates cut the 26-song set list down to 19 tracks, presumably to match New Order’s 80-minute running time.

That meant some true PSB classics – “Go West,” “What Have I Done to Deserve This” and “New York City Boy” among them – didn’t make the cut Sunday. But the set still pulsed with constant energy, from the clever “Opportunities (Let’s Make Lots of Money)” to the sordid “It’s a Sin.” The duo’s covers were a lot of fun as well, including “Where the Streets Have No Name (I Can’t Take My Eyes Off You),” “Always on My Mind,” “It’s Alright” and Stephen Sondheim’s “Losing My Mind” (the sole b-side of the night).

High points in a set full of them included the lush “Love Comes Quickly” and a fierce “Domino Dancing” complete with the audience singing the choruses. Tennant barely took a breath between songs, giving the show a real forward-driving momentum that kept going until the encore of “West End Girls” and “Being Boring.”

New Order – whose live show was notoriously hit or miss back in the day – didn’t have quite the same urgency and lead singer Bernard Sumner has lost some of his voice. At times, the 66-year-old yelped out his lyrics and at other times attempted to slip into a croon with limited success.

The band more than made it for it, though, both recreating some of the most precise songs of the era and occasionally adding a new spin. And bassist Tom Chapman did an admirable job of tackling Peter Hook’s truly iconic sound. (Hook left the group in 2007 and now does terrific solo tours devoted to entire New Order and Joy Division albums.) Oh, and they were loud, too, giving songs like “Blue Monday” and “Age of Content” a real arena rock heft.

In addition to a curated selection of tracks from New Order’s ’80s heyday – “Subculture” and “Temptation” were stand outs – they played a pair of songs from their most recent album, 2015’s “Music Complete,” but unfortunately the epic banger “People on the High Line” (the band’s best song in decades) wasn’t one of them.

New Order & Pet Shop Boys Kick Off Long Awaited ‘Unity’ Nort American Tour In Toronto

?????????????

  • By Ryan Dillon

Last night (September 17), two of modern rock’s most influential bands kicked off a long-awaited headlining tour at Toronto’s Budweiser Stage, which was originally supposed to happen in 2020. Electro-pop duo Pet Shop Boys and the synth-driven Joy Division offshoot New Order are taking their generational talents across North America. The Unity Tour has the two influential groups switching off headlining positions at each stop on the tour as they continue their month-long run through North America. Pet Shop Boys started things off as the opener at the tour’s first stop last night.

Pet Shop Boys have been one of the most dominating forces in dance music since their debut in 1984. Their decades-long run has culminated in 14 studio albums and critical acclaim across the world. At their Toronto gig, the duo performed some of their most beloved B-sides that mainly came from the first half of their career with cuts from their seminal debut Please . They started the night off with “Suburbia” and “Opportunities” from the aforementioned debut and then went into “Rent” from their 1987 album Actually . The electro-pop pioneers also went outside of their discography for covers of “Losing My Mind” by Stephen Sondheim, “You Were Always on My Mind” by Gwen McCrae, and “It’s Alright” by Sterling Void.

After the tragic passing of Joy Division frontman Ian Curtis, the remaining members of the band set out on another creative effort. With the addition of keyboardist Gillian Gilbert, the band’s trailblazing take on post-punk took an electronic turn and the newly formed New Order would become pioneers for the genre. For their first headlining show of the tour, the band’s setlist primarily focused on their earlier years. A large majority of New Order’s 14-song setlist was taken from the 1987 compilation album Substance , performing hits like “Ceremony”and “Bizzare Love Triangle”. The band paid homage to their beginnings by closing out their set by performing “Love Will Tear Us Apart” from their days as Joy Division.

This string of shows has the two electronic juggernauts stopping in major cities in the U.S. like Boston, Philadelphia, and New York. The first weekend of October will have the pair of bands in Los Angeles for two back-to-back shows.

Review: new order and pet shop boys deliver invigoratingly nostalgic british dance music in minneapolis.

"Paul Oakenfold. New Order. Pet Shop Boys. Minneapolis, what have you done to deserve this?" Pet Shop Boys singer Neil Tennant sarcastically asked a full house Sunday night at the Armory in Minneapolis.

Well, we sent the Minnesota Vikings across the pond to play the New Orleans Saints Sunday, and they gave London a dramatic game of American football.

What did Tennant and the lineup of veteran British musicians do for Minneapolis in return? They delivered a satisfyingly nostalgic and invigorating evening of mostly 1980s British dance music in a venue known for presenting contemporary electronic dance music acts.

On their Unity Tour, Pet Shop Boys and New Order are each playing 90 minutes and taking turns as headliners, with Oakenfold as the opener and intermission DJ.

As always, Tennant and partner Chris Lowe, the keyboardist, were delightfully arty purveyors of their pop-dance music. Their presentation had visual themes, whether it was the two of them performing under separate streetlights or their series of outfits of black and white. Once a video screen lifted, the duo's three other musicians were revealed, accompanied by constantly moving video images on various screens.

Never known for his dynamic stage presence, Tennant, 68, a reserved former music journalist, animated his reverb-boosted voice with arm and hand gestures. But Pet Shop Boys music is really about the buoyant melodies and incessant beats that seduce you into a feeling of unfettered freedom.

PSB's biggest hit, 1984's "West End Girls," was marred by distorted bass played by Lowe on keyboards. But there was no arguing with two 1987 tunes — the explosive, swirling "It's a Sin" and "Heart," which built to a banger — and 2019's "Dreamland," a darker-toned change of pace.

Closing the four-hour program at the Armory, New Order offered post-punk dance-rock from throughout its career, including two tunes from Joy Division, the group from which it spawned after the 1980 suicide of frontman Ian Curtis.

On Sunday, New Order singer/guitarist Bernard Sumner, 66, looked like a bespectacled accountant donning T-shirt, jeans and sneakers for his weekend hobby band. Moreover, his dad dance moves might have made his children cringe. But New Order's music kept a mostly over-40 crowd dancing to the driving disco-rock, complemented by strobes, lasers, lights in sync with the beat and a barrage of cool video images.

Highlights were the 1980s nuggets, the surging "Sub-culture" and the emphatic and urgent "Temptation," along with 2015's unrelentingly forceful "Restless," 2020's contagious dance-pop "Be a Rebel" and, of course, the encore of Joy Division's 1980 hit "Love Will Tear Us Apart."

Oakenfold, a celebrated DJ and remixer, kept the crowd partying with a blend of hits by Rihanna and Technotronic along with club gems by Acraze and DJ Dai, though he somehow managed to spin Prince's "When Doves Cry" twice back-to-back before segueing into the Purple One's "Kiss" as his finale.

Taylor Swift adds 7 new songs to her Eras Tour — plus all the other changes she's made to the show

"The Tortured Poets Department" has officially joined the setlist.

new order psb tour

Taylor Swift is fresh out the slammer, and right back into the Eras Tour grind.

Swifties everywhere had been anticipating her Thursday show in Paris because it's the first concert of her worldwide tour since the release of her 11th studio album, The Tortured Poets Department , which dropped on April 19. Since she first announced the record, fans have wondered if she would incorporate it into her nearly three-and-a-half-hour Eras performances, and what songs may get cut or changed to accommodate it.

Speculation went into overdrive recently when Swift posted a YouTube Short of herself preparing for the tour that included what looks like a new mic, set pieces, and choreography — strongly implying that the first major changes to Eras were imminent.

Swift has made small tweaks to the show, like adding "Long Live" to the "Speak Now" section when that re-recorded album came out during the tour, or swapping out "Invisible String" for the "The 1" in the "Folklore" set in the wake of her breakup with Joe Alwyn . But adding a whole new era would be the most seismic shift yet, and all eyes were on the City of Light to see if and how the singer-songwriter did it.

So, come one, come all, [the Eras Tour] is happening again — and Entertainment Weekly has highlighted all of its changes below.

Sign up for Entertainment Weekly 's free daily newsletter to get breaking TV news, exclusive first looks, recaps, reviews, interviews with your favorite stars, and more.

"Tortured Poets" added to the intro mash-up

While the introduction to the first Era of the evening, "Lover," remained largely the same, the audio that plays before Swift takes the stage — which includes snippets from all of the show's featured albums — boasted a short bit from her new song "The Tortured Poets Department," off her latest album of the same name. The singer also debuted a new orange-tinted bodysuit and matching jacket during the first era.

"The Archer" cut from the "Lover" set

The "Lover" set used to end with "The Archer" and go straight into Swift's "Fearless" era, but no more. Now the set ends after "Lover." But its stunning transition with the sparkler effect is still intact.

A new "Fearless" dress

Swift donned a shimmery fringe dress in her second album's era.

The set order changed!

Instead of "Fearless" giving way to the "Evermore" era, Swift transitioned to the "Red" set — though the music box mime that previously kicked off the era is still in the show. This was the first indication of the night that major changes were coming to the tour, and it meant the entire performance will now unfold in a different order. The new order is:

"Lover" "Fearless" "Red" "Speak Now" "Reputation" "Folklore + Evermore" "1989" "The Tortured Poets Department" Surprise songs "Midnights"

Kevin Mazur/TAS24/Getty

"Red" got some updates

Swift debuted a new shirt during the top of the "Red" set that reads: "This IS NOT Taylor's Version." She also made remarks to the crowd before performing the 10-minute version of "All Too Well." Previously, she engaged with the audience like this during the "Evermore" era.

"Speak Now" got new visuals, but "Long Live" got cut

The era for Swift's third LP, Speak Now , began with a new, prolonged choreographed number accompanying instrumentals from the album before the singer eventually showed up (in a new ballgown, naturally) to sing "Enchanted." The visuals on the big screen were also new — but still very purple, of course.

However, fan-favorite Speak Now track "Long Live" did not survive this set, meaning "Enchanted" is now the sole song for this era.

"Folklore" and "Evermore" were combined

Featuring an updated intro with tweaked visuals and instrumentals, the "Folklore" set also started with a completely different song. Previously, the era began with Swift atop a cabin singing "The 1," but now she kicks things off with "Cardigan." But Swift — who also wore a new yellow dress for the set — still gave a little speech before performing "Betty." Instead of going right into "The Last Great American Dynasty," however, she revealed another twist: The eras for her 2020 sister albums, Folklore and Evermore, have officially been combined. She then proceeded to play "Cardigan."

The setlist for this new sister era is: "Cardigan" "Betty" "Champagne Problems" "August" "Illicit Affairs" "My Tears Ricochet" "Marjorie" "Willow"

This means the following songs were cut from the "Folklore" and "Evermore" sections: "'Tis the Damn Season," "Tolerate It," "The 1," and "The Last Great American Dynasty."

A new 'fit for "1989"

The singer debuted a new multicolor separate set for this era, complete with mismatched shoes.

"The Tortured Poets Department" makes its Eras debut

After "1989," new literary-themed visuals floated on the big screen, paving the way for the first new era of the tour: "The Tortured Poets Department." Naturally, this meant brand-new choreography and costumes, as well as black-and-white visuals throughout — of a haunted house, alien spaceships, and the asylum from the "Fortnight" music video . The platform on the stage also seemed to move around the set in ways we haven't seen before as the singer performed on top of it. At one point, Swift was picked up off the ground and forced to change on stage as circus-type music played in the background. She then segued this into "I Can Do It With a Broken Heart," which featured several old Hollywood motifs and choreography involving top hats and canes. The "The Tortured Poets Department" setlist includes:

"But Daddy I Love Him" and "So High School" mash-up "Who's Afraid of Little Old Me?" "Down Bad," which segued into "Fortnight" "Fortnight" "The Smallest Man Who Ever Lived" "I Can Do It With a Broken Heart"

Surprise songs

Nothing changed in this section of the tour besides Swift donning a new magenta dress. But she performed "Paris" on guitar and the TTPD track "Loml" on piano, officially confirming that the new album could be performed in the acoustic set from here on out.

A "Midnights" costume change

Swift debuted what seemed to be a new "Midnights" bodysuit during her performance of "Midnight Rain." This era was otherwise unchanged.

New Eras Tour merch!

Immediately after the show, the singer's website was updated with new merchandise featuring an Eras Tour logo with Tortured Poets art front and center — previously, a Midnights promo shot was used. The new merch curiously features names such as "The Eras II Tour Gray Crewneck."

KOTA KINABALU: Those planning to spend their holidays in Sabah have been advised to secure their tour packages with tour operators who are registered with the Tourism, Arts and Culture Ministry (Motac).

State Tourism, Culture and Environment Minister Datuk Christina Liew issued the reminder following a suspected drowning incident involving a Chinese tourist at Mengalum Island, some 56km northwest of the Sabah capital, last Saturday (May 11).

Liew said the incident involved a Chinese national identified as Zhang Tian Long, 34.

She said it was understood that the deceased and his wife Wang Cui Cui, 32, who were married recently, had purchased a Mengalum day tour from an app prior to the incident.

“They were then handled by a local tour operator while holidaying in Sabah," she added, in a statement here on Wednesday (May 15).

Wang, a nurse, was waiting on the Mengalum beach for her husband to return from his snorkelling leisure activity when the said incident happened in the middle of the sea.

Liew, who is currently on an official trip overseas, also emphasised the need for tourist boats to be well-equipped with life-saving tools, such as life jackets, first aid kits, and cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) equipment in case of emergencies.

On Tuesday (May 14), the minister’s political secretary Vivien Lee, who represented Liew, as well as Sabah Tourism Board marketing manager Aboni Loong visited the wife of the deceased at a hotel here where she was staying.

STB assured Wang that the agency under the state tourism ministry would do its best to render assistance.

The duo assisted the wife in contacting the funeral parlour for documentation and funeral arrangements for the deceased.

A distraught Wang, who had lodged a report on the incident with the police, told Lee and Loong that she would initiate legal action against the ground handler.

You can safely say that all Swifties are “Down Bad” for the new version of the “Eras Tour.”

The last time Taylor Swift hit the “Eras Tour” stage in Singapore, it was just a month before she released her newest album “The Tortured Poets Department .”

So, when Swift began the European leg of her “Eras Tour” in Paris, France, fans were anxiously waiting to see how she would implement the new album into her already jam packed set .

All in all, Taylor Swift did not disappoint on Night 1 of her Paris shows.

From new outfits to axed songs and new songs, there has been plenty to talk about and fangirl over, and anticipation has only grown for the rest of the European shows to see what else Taylor Swift has up her sleeve.

Here are all the changes Taylor Swift has made to the European leg of the “Eras Tour” so far.

Taylor Swift ‘Eras Tour’ changes

‘tortured poets’ added to the intro mash-up of albums.

Every Swiftie who has either been to the “Eras Tour” or has watched every concert video on TikTok has the introduction of album titles memorized by heart. That’s so much so that when the TTPD title was added to the intro , fans immediately freaked out.

Besides the album title, she added the line in the intro, “What if i told you I’m back?” which is from her song “imgonnagetyouback.”

Costume changes

There were several new costume changes throughout the night, which is one of the first extensive major outfit changes Swift has done across all eras since she announced “1989 (Taylor’s Version).”

First, during the “Lover” set, Swift hit the stage in a sparkly orange bodysuit and matching boots , which left fans, including me, in awe. She then put on a matching oversized blazer when she began performing “The Man.”

Then, during the “Fearless” set, Swift donned a new fringe dress very reminiscent of a black and grey one she wore during her 2009 “Fearless” tour .

During the “Red” era, Swift wore a new T-shirt that said “This IS NOT Taylor’s Version.” During her Paris Night 2 show, she went with a “I Bet You Think About Me” shirt .

The direct references to her past tours did not end there.

For “Speak Now,” Swift came out in a stunning new gown , which had the audience stunned. It was a faded lilac color with a ribbon pattern of gold sequins and rhinestones wrapping around the entire dress.

This gown was a direct reference to an outfit she wore during her 2011 “Speak Now” world tour.

For her “Folklore” and “Evermore” sets, Swift combined the two dresses into one. Generally, the Folklore dresses have very billowy sleeves and skirt layers that swish around as she spins across the stage while singing “August.” The “Evermore” dresses usually give off more of a fall vibe as they are more yellow, brown and rust colored.

To combine the two, Swift donned a beautiful dress in the shade of yellow , which she used for both sets. For her Night 2 show in Paris, she wore a bright fuchsia dress.

Next was the “1989″ set, where she came out in a completely new look . Swift took the stage in a bright turquoise skater skirt, which is something she wore quite often in 2015 when the album came out. She also wore a pink sparkly halter top and a mismatched pair of blue and pink Christian Louboutin ankle boots.

For Paris Night 2, she wore a purple skirt and orange top .

For the surprise song set, Swift wore a new pink dress and a new fringe bodysuit for the “Midnights” set, which closes out the show.

As much as we were dreading it, we knew song cuts would have to happen in order to add new songs to the set. The songs that were axed from the set were, “The Archer”, “Long Live”, “Tis the Damn Season”, “Tolerate It”, “The 1″ and “The Last Great American Dynasty”.

Set order change

If you have been to an “Eras Tour” show in the past, then get ready for a change up in the set.

The new order of “Eras” performed at the show is now, “Lover,” ”Fearless,” “Red,” ”Speak Now,” “Reputation,” ”Folklore” and “Evermore” as one combined set, “1989,″ ”The Tortured Poets Department,” surprise songs and ”Midnights.”

New ‘Speak Now’ visuals

This set now begins with a long, choreographed number while instrumentals from her “Speak Now” album play in the background.

There are also very purple new visuals playing as Taylor performs.

‘The Tortured Poets Department’ enters the ‘Eras Tour’ universe

This is what every fan watching through a TikTok livestream or live in concert has been waiting for.

The TTPD set comes right after “1989″ with literary themed visuals sprawling across the screens before Taylor and her dancers came out. There was new choreography , costumes and of course, a huge range of new songs.

As she sang, there were black and white visuals of stained glass, a haunted house, alien spaceships and the asylum from the “Fortnight” music video.

There was also a platform that moved around the stage as Taylor sang on it, which is something fans have not yet seen before on her tour.

Halfway through the set, Swift’s dancers lifted her while old timey, black and white film music played in the background and as she changed into a new gold and black outfit .

Here is the setlist for the new era:

  • “But Daddy I Love Him” and “So High School” mash-up
  • ”Who’s Afraid of Little Old Me?“
  • “Fortnight”
  • ”The Smallest Man Who Ever Lived”
  • ”I Can Do It With a Broken Heart”

New ‘Eras Tour’ merchandise

The next best things after seeing Taylor Swift live is getting your hands on new tour merchandise.

After the concert, her website was updated with the merch : shirts and sweatshirts with the TTPD promo picture in the middle where the “Midnights” picture once was. The other eras surround the rectangular TTPD photo.

Taylor Swift’s 2024 Eras Tour Setlist Features A Huge Change-Up

The singer resumed her record-breaking tour in Paris, France.

Taylor Swift’s 2024 Eras Tour Setlist: New Songs & Cuts

It’s me, hi, I’m the setlist, it’s me — and welcome to the Eras Tour , again . Taylor Swift resumed her record-breaking Eras Tour in Paris, France, on May 9, and it came with quite the twist. For the first time in the tour’s run, the singer significantly upheaved her setlist , rearranging the order of the show’s ten acts representing her landmark studio albums to squeeze in a new era.

As fans have suspected for months, Swift added a whole new section to the show including songs from her latest album The Tortured Poets Department , all of which are being performed live for the first time. Understandably, Swift had to cut a good number of songs, including “The Archer” and “Long Live,” to add seven Tortured Poets tracks into her show’s usual run time of three-and-a-half hours.

She’s also changed the running order of the eras significantly. While she started with the Lover era and transitioned into Fearless as usual, she then went into the Red era sooner than expected. ( Evermore usually had followed the Fearless act.) She even combined the Folklore and Evermore eras into one act. (They’ve always been called “sister albums” after all).

Swift has made the occasional change on the road, like switching out her Folklore track “invisible string” for “the 1,” adding “Long Live” to the Speak Now act, and performing “Nothing New” and “no body, no crime” at shows where duet partners Phoebe Bridgers and HAIM opened for her. But this is the first time she’s amended the setlist to this extent. Read on for Swift’s revised Eras Tour setlist.

The stadium series kicked off last year in Glendale, Arizona, and quickly became a sensation . After making stops across the US, Mexico, South America , Japan, Australia, and Singapore , Swift will continue to perform throughout 2024 in Europe , plus a second North American leg scheduled for later this year.

On Thursday, Swift resumed The Eras Tour in France after a multi-week hiatus.

During that break, Swift released her 11th studio album, " The Tortured Poets Department " — so she adjusted the original 44-song set list to include brand new tracks, though other fan favorites (including " The Archer ," " The 1 ," and " Tolerate It ") were cut for time.

The updated show stretches for over three hours and includes 46 songs. The complete set list is cataloged below, in order of Swift's performance.

It debuted at No. 1 on the Hot 100, becoming the longest song ever to hold the chart's top position.

"Enchanted"

new order psb tour

"Enchanted" is the only song from Swift's third album, "Speak Now," that she currently performs during The Eras Tour.

For a brief time, following the release of " Speak Now (Taylor's Version) ," Swift added the fan-favorite deep cut "Long Live" to the set list. It has since been removed.

"…Ready for It?"

new order psb tour

"…Ready for It?" was originally teased during ABC's "Saturday Night Football" broadcast in 2017. It was later used by ESPN in college football commercials.

"Delicate"

new order psb tour

Swift's performance of "Delicate" during The Eras Tour features a stage animation that cracks beneath her feet .

"Don't Blame Me"

new order psb tour

"Don't Blame Me" is the sole non-single that Swift performs during the tour's "Reputation" segment. The fan-favorite track is often cited as a highlight of the show .

"Look What You Made Me Do"

new order psb tour

"Look What You Made Me Do," which interpolates Right Said Fred's '90s hit "I'm Too Sexy," was released as the lead single from "Reputation" and debuted at No. 1 on the Hot 100.

"Cardigan"

new order psb tour

The No. 1 single "Cardigan" was released alongside Swift's beloved album " Folklore ." The song references Peter Pan and introduces the album's "teenage love triangle."

"Betty"

new order psb tour

"Betty" is told from the perspective of a high schooler named James , who broke the heart of the titular heroine.

"Champagne Problems"

new order psb tour

The heart-wrenching piano ballad "Champagne Problems" often inspires a minutes-long standing ovation during The Eras Tour.

"August"

new order psb tour

Swift's debut performance of "August" took place at the 2021 Grammy Awards. Later that night, she won album of the year for "Folklore," her record-tying third trophy in that category.

"Illicit Affairs"

new order psb tour

"Illicit Affairs" is widely interpreted as a song about marital infidelity, though its descriptions of forbidden love and "clandestine meetings" adopt new meanings through a queer lens .

"My Tears Ricochet"

new order psb tour

In Swift's own words , "My Tears Ricochet" was inspired by the image of an "embittered tormentor showing up at the funeral of his fallen object of obsession."

"Marjorie"

new order psb tour

"Marjorie" is named after Swift's late grandmother, Marjorie Finlay , an opera singer who died in 2003. Finlay is credited with background vocals in the song.

"Willow"

new order psb tour

"Willow" was promoted as the lead single from " Evermore ." Like "Cardigan," it was released simultaneously with its parent album and debuted at No. 1 on the Hot 100.

"Style"

new order psb tour

Swift briefly dated Harry Styles before releasing her fifth studio album, "1989."

When Rolling Stone asked about the inspiration behind the album's third track, "Style," she replied, "We should have just called it 'I'm Not Even Sorry.'"

"Blank Space"

new order psb tour

"Blank Space" is a widely celebrated satire about Swift's reputation as a "serial dater."

"'She only writes songs to get emotional revenge on guys. She's a man-hater. Don't let her near your boyfriend,'" Swift explained at the time. "It was just kind of excessive and, you know, at first it was hurtful and then I kind of found a little comedy in it."

The song dethroned "Shake It Off" at No. 1 on the Hot 100, making Swift the first and only woman in history to replace herself in the chart's top spot. (She has since done it twice.)

"Shake It Off"

new order psb tour

"Shake It Off" was released as the lead single from "1989," Swift's official pivot from country to pop music .

The song became her first to debut at No. 1 on the Hot 100 and remained there for four weeks. It also inspired a sketch on "Saturday Night Live"  about adults realizing they love Swift's music.

"Wildest Dreams"

new order psb tour

"Wildest Dreams" was released as the first rerecorded song from "1989 (Taylor's Version)."

"Bad Blood"

new order psb tour

"Bad Blood" was famously inspired by Swift's then-feud with Katy Perry , whom Swift accused of trying to "sabotage" her "Red" tour. (The two pop stars have long since buried the hatchet .)

The remix includes a feature from Kendrick Lamar , who returned to rerecord his verse for "1989 (Taylor's Version)."

"But Daddy I Love Him"

new order psb tour

Following the release of her massive double album , "The Tortured Poets Department: The Anthology," Swift added seven brand-new songs to The Eras Tour setlist.

The first is "But Daddy I Love Him," a sharp rebuke of Swift's own fans , many of whom criticized her dating life last year.

"So High School"

new order psb tour

"So High School" is widely presumed to be about Swift's current boyfriend, NFL star Travis Kelce . The song's lyrics seem to reference their different professions: "You know how to ball, I know Aristotle."

"Who's Afraid of Little Old Me?"

new order psb tour

Swift is the only songwriter credited for "Who's Afraid of Little Old Me?"

The song title is likely inspired by "Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf?" — a celebrated play written by Edward Albee that tackles themes of truth versus illusion, fate versus choice, and feeling trapped.

"Down Bad"

new order psb tour

"Down Bad" is a heartsick serenade that compares falling in love to being abducted by aliens.

"Fortnight"

new order psb tour

"Fortnight" was promoted as the lead single from "The Tortured Poets Department," alongside a music video that costars Post Malone and references "Dead Poets Society."

"The Smallest Man Who Ever Lived"

new order psb tour

"The Smallest Man Who Ever Lived" is a scathing breakup song that may have been inspired by Matty Healy , whom Swift dated while writing "The Tortured Poets Department." According to reports, their relationship lasted about one month .

"I Can Do It With a Broken Heart"

new order psb tour

In a meta twist, "I Can Do It With a Broken Heart" was apparently inspired by The Eras Tour itself. The lyrics seem to reference a string of concerts last year, when Swift felt "miserable" but continued to perform as usual ("They said, 'Babe, you gotta fake it 'til you make it,' and I did").

Surprise Song No. 1

new order psb tour

During each show on The Eras Tour, Swift performs a two-song acoustic set that changes every night . The first song is always played on acoustic guitar.

The first-ever surprise song Swift played in Arizona was "Mirrorball." For the first stop on the European leg, she chose the "Midnights" bonus cut "Paris."

Surprise Song No. 2

new order psb tour

The second surprise song of the evening is always played on the piano.

In Arizona, Swift's first-ever surprise song on piano was "Tim McGraw," the lead single from her 2006 debut album. For night one in France, Swift played the "Tortured Poets" heartbreaker "Loml."

"Lavender Haze"

new order psb tour

"Lavender Haze" is the opening track on Swift's 10th studio album " Midnights ."

"Anti-Hero"

new order psb tour

"Anti-Hero" was promoted as the lead single from "Midnights." It debuted at No. 1 and became Swift's biggest hit to date, reigning atop the chart for eight weeks.

The same week that "Anti-Hero" arrived in the top spot, Swift became the first and only artist in history to  occupy the entire top 10 on the Hot 100 .

"Midnight Rain"

new order psb tour

"Midnight Rain" doubles as a breakup song and an ode to Swift's own ambitions: "He wanted it comfortable, I wanted that pain / He wanted a bride, I was making my own name," she sings, calling back to the rejection of '50s gender roles in "Lavender Haze."

"Vigilante Shit"

new order psb tour

Put simply, "Vigilante Shit" is about getting revenge. Many fans believe the song was inspired by Scooter Braun , who purchased Swift's back catalog in 2019. Less than two years later, he sold Swift's master recordings to a private equity company .

"Bejeweled"

new order psb tour

The music video for "Bejeweled"  includes a variety of celebrity cameos, including Laura Dern, the Haim sisters, and Dita Von Teese.

"Mastermind"

new order psb tour

In the chorus of "Mastermind," Swift seems to serenade her longtime fans: "What if I told you I'm a mastermind? / And now you're mine."

The song also references Swift's penchant for Easter eggs and her keen business acumen, which has allowed her to build a billion-dollar empire .

"I'm sick of women not being able to say that they have strategic business minds — because male artists are allowed to," Swift told Rolling Stone in 2019. "And so I'm sick and tired of having to pretend like I don't mastermind my own business."

"Karma"

new order psb tour

Swift closes the elaborate show with "Karma," a song that mocks her enemies and salutes her own longevity: "Ask me what I learned from all those years / Ask me what I earned from all those tears / Ask me why so many fade, but I'm still here."
