Princess Cruises is a premium cruise line founded in 1965 and headquartered in Santa Clarita, California. The company operates a fleet of 16 ships that sail to destinations all over the world, including the Caribbean, Europe, Asia, South America, and Australia. The company's ships range in size from the intimate Pacific Princess, which can accommodate just 670 passengers, to the larger Royal Princess, which can accommodate up to 3,560 passengers. Princess Cruises is a subsidiary of Carnival Corporation, the world's largest leisure travel company.

Spring break in the Caribbean? No problem

Princess had no problem coming up with an itinerary for our across-cruise-lines comparison sailing, going to the Caribbean in March and booking a little less than a year ahead of time. There were 13 options, starting at $418 for a week-long sailing out of Ft. Lauderdale (either Eastern or Western Caribbean itineraries) and going up to a 20-day Caribbean Explorer itinerary with 13 ports, priced at $2,148 per person.

Upgrade to Princess Plus to get more included in your fare

How about gratuities? On Princess, it's called "Crew Appreciation" , and while it's adjustable it'll still be added automatically to your onboard account: $16 per guest per day for interior, oceanview and balcony cabins, $17pp per day for mini-suite and Reserve Collection guests, and $18pp per day in Suites. But, if you choose a "Princess Plus" fare at the time of booking, your gratuities have already been taken care of, along with a beverage package and complimentary Wi-Fi.

Choose when and where you'd like to eat every night

Princess Cruises is known for its excellent food and beverage offerings, with a range of dining options to suit all tastes and preferences. The company partners with renowned chefs such as Curtis Stone and Ernesto Uchimura to create menus that feature both classic and contemporary cuisine. Passengers can choose from a variety of dining options, including the main dining room, specialty restaurants, and casual eateries. Princess Cruises also offers a unique dining experience called "Anytime Dining," which allows passengers to choose when and where they want to dine each night.

Most guests are 50+

One of the biggest things to be aware of with Princess is the demographic. The average age of a Princess Cruises guest varies depending on the itinerary and time of year. In general, Princess cruises attract a diverse mix of passengers, ranging from families with children to retirees and solo travelers. However, on average, the majority of guests are over the age of 50. Many of the onboard activities, such as bridge and ballroom dancing, may be more popular with older passengers. Princess also attracts a significant number of repeat guests, many of whom are retirees. These guests often appreciate the line's longer itineraries and world cruises, which provide the opportunity to travel extensively while enjoying the comfort and convenience of a cruise ship.

Kids and young adults are welcome too

That doesn't mean that kids aren't welcome - or kept busy - when sailing on Princess. Families with children can take advantage of the line's Camp Discovery program, which provides age-appropriate activities and entertainment for kids and teens. The line also offers family-friendly shore excursions, such as snorkeling and beach trips.

Trying to appeal to wider range

In recent years, Princess Cruises has made efforts to appeal to a wider range of passengers, including families and younger adults. The line has introduced new dining options, such as the Salty Dog Gastropub and SHARE by Curtis Stone, which offer more casual and contemporary cuisine. Princess Cruises has also partnered with Discovery Communications to offer onboard programming, such as Shark Week at Sea and Discovery at Sea, which provide educational and immersive experiences for all ages.

Trustworthy cruise line

We have no concerns about recommending Princess as a trustworthy cruise line with an attractive variety of destinations and onboard experiences, from small-ship sailing to large-ship amenities. This is especially true if you're retired, because much of what the company offers is geared towards you and your peers. It'll be a little less appealing if you're traveling with children, but it's still worth a look as long as you know what you're getting (and what you're not).

In an average year, over fifteen million people say "all aboard" and set sail on an amazing vacation.

There are many different cruise lines to choose from, and each one offers a different type of experience. Some are geared towards families, while others are more focused on luxury or adventure. What would you like to see and do while you're onboard? Is a casino a must-have or a rather-avoid? Would a Broadway-caliber show tip the scales for you? Do you need a wide range of activities to keep the kiddos happy while the adults live it up or relax? The onboard activities and amenities can really make or break your vacation, so be sure you know what you're getting.

Another factor that can influence which cruise line you choose is the itinerary. Cruise ships travel all over the world, but some cruise lines may not have destinations available where you're hoping to go. You should also consider the size of the ship: larger ships offer more amenities, but smaller ships can access ports that bigger ships can't.

Speaking of amenities, make sure you understand what you'll get as part of your fare and which extras will come with an additional cost. For example, most cruises offer drink packages for alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages, but a few have drink stations where you can get complimentary lemonade, coffee and tea. Other amenities that might be important to you are Wi-Fi, spa services, babysitting, fitness classes, and upgraded dining experiences. You can usually get a decent discount if you sign up for an amenities package before you sail, so keep an eye out for promotions in the months leading up to your sailing.

When you take a cruise, it's almost always expected that you'll tip the crew members who have attended to your needs while onboard: your cabin steward ( who probably leaves your towels folded into fun shapes every night ), your servers at your nightly meals, and the head waiter. Cruise lines have a recommended gratuity to cover all three of those staff members, usually $15-$20 per traveler, per day; the total gratuity amount may be charged automatically to your account, or you may be given envelopes to make cash payments.

While it usually isn't mandatory to pay those gratuities - you can ask to have them removed if they're applied automatically, especially if you've received poor service - it's typically considered in poor taste not to tip at the suggested levels (because crew members' salaries, much like servers at your local restaurant, are based on the expectation of tips paid by guests). And, if you receive service that goes above and beyond, adding to the recommended gratuity is always appreciated. Be aware that tips for bartenders, poolside servers, and professional services provided in the spa or elsewhere are not included in the daily suggested gratuity and may be charged automatically at the time of service.

Now that you have a good overview of the cruising experience, which cruise line should you choose? Beyond the points we already covered, here are a few additional criteria that might make it easier to pick:

• Embarkation port. You could get a great deal on a cruise, but what will it cost you to get to the port? That could involve airfare, an overnight stay or two in a nearby hotel (so that you're less likely to be affected by travel delays), and transportation from the airport or hotel to the port. This is especially true if you're taking a cruise that departs from an international destination.
• Perks for repeat cruisers. Like frequent flyer programs on airlines, most cruise lines offer benefits the more you sail. If you find yourself absolutely loving cruise vacations, it can be advantageous to put all of your eggs in one basket, so to speak. Rewards programs can include casino benefits, complimentary meals at the upgraded dining experiences, exclusive sail-away parties with free cocktails and tchotchkes, early-access booking on future cruises, and much more.
• Reputation. It's a really smart idea to see what other travelers have said about their overall experience with a cruise line before booking your trip. The ads on TV may make that private island look amazing, but someone who's been there might point out that you'll pay extra to get on that waterslide. Or, previous cruisers could tell you that despite having several formal nights on the schedule, a particular cruise line has no problem with people showing up to dinner in flip-flops and swimsuit coverups. Find out if the cruise line you're considering lines up in reality with what they advertise.

Terrible Customer Service

I have a cruise that leaves this Friday. I tried to contact Princess a few times already and have had horrible experiences. The first time the lady said she couldn't hear me and hung up, which was not true because she would respond to specific things I said. I called again and spoke to a gentleman named Hendrix. I had three questions regarding their "Plus Plan" and he did not seem to be confident with his answers and ran in circles a bit, which left me feeling a little skeptical. I decided to use the only chat service so that answers could be verified in writing in the even any issues arrived. It has been 52 minutes so far and no one has picked it up. It is mind-blowing that the service is this poor. I have sailed with quite a few cruise lines and none have had this bad of service. I can say with certainty that I will not be going through Princess in the future.

Let down by very poor Customer Service

We have a Norway and Iceland Cruise booked for July. We have sailed with Princess before and had a lovely time but I doubt we would book again. The app, that they make such a fuss over, will not let us book any dining. An error message just keeps coming up, that no-one seems to know what it is. We have tried online chat numerous times, phoned customer services in the Philippines 3 times and emailed but have had no response or success it getting it rectified. Although this is only a dining problem it just wouldn't give me the confidence, that if any thing significant did go wrong, that there would be anyone to speak to, who could be bothered to help and sort it out. So I think this will be our last cruise with Princess

NOT ACCEPTABLE

Princess Cruise have cancelled our dining reservations ten days before sailing. We made these reservations ten weeks ago. Our chosen dining times are no longer available. Quite appalling level of service. I note 75% of reviewers have given Princess 1 star, that says it all.

4 Previous Princess cruises, there won't be a 5th

Had 4 previous Princess cruises, really looking forward to delicious food,which is always a given Gosh, what a let down. 3 MDR's basically all identical serving very poor quality food, which is always cold due to very slow service. Eventually we decided to eat in Buffet, very good food, always hot ,but we wanted to be served at a table, not eat in a cafeteria because that's actually what Buffet is. On Formal nights,many finely dressed passengers wandering up and down selecting food. Surely this would have had management wondering ?. DJ and cafeteria ,not an obvious combination We ate in Rudi's catch, one of the Speciality restaurants, beautiful and a reminder of Princess pre covid. But it costs £60.00. Shouldn't need to. Cabin was lovely. Ship seemed over busy,difficult to find seating during poor weather

Very poor customer service post cruise

Very poor customer service post cruise. I have had money debited from my bank card which does not match with my final medallion bill. They have taken 2 lots of money, one that matches the final bill and a second of £157 which I have no idea about. I rang customer services and they provided a telephone number that deals post cruise. Needless to say the number is not recognised. I have messaged on instagram but still waiting on a response 3 days later. Absolute jokers 🤬

Beautiful Sky Princess…

Beautiful ship, outstanding value, food was amazing. I don't understand the negative reviews. All stuff were so friendly and helpful. Included restaurants were top notch. We went twice on the Princess plus package in a mini suite and a deluxe balcony room, and we have booked again on the same ship.

PRINCESS Shameful change of Ports on expensive Mediterranern Cruise…

Received email from Princess that they are changing our itenerary on the Sun Princess on May 25 Cruise. Instead of going to Kotor Montenegro the ship will go to the SLEEPY Sea Side town of Bar Montenegro, At this time, Princess does not show any excursions for this port. Nor could we find any excursions on Viator, Trip Advisor, etc. All the You Tube Videos of Bar have no talking walking tour. Because there is nothing to see. Yet, we are in port for 11 hours! Princess lamed excuse is technical restrictions affecting water shuttle operations. Is there a problem with the water shuttles themselves. Princess could have chosen a more interesting port to replace Kotor. Simply put Bar is BORING.

I have been on 3 different Princess ships: Royal, Regal and Sky, sailed on them all more than once. We have also sailed on many other lines and Princess by far suit ys best. Beautiful ships and fantastic service. Another 4 cruises booked with them - can’t wait!

DON'T BOOK ON PRINCESS CRUISES

DON'T BOOK ON PRINCESS CRUISES Absolutely NO customer service before embarkation. AI.. generally stupidly useless.. OR a Phillipines "agent". You can hear household cacophony in background. I could not understand most of what was said. And when I could, the answer was scripted.. which is no answer at all. No help for the customer who needs to resolve any conflicts. You must wait until you embark on your cruise!!!! Loonngg lines to speak to Guest Services. And still they cannot provide answers. They only can say "that's what the computer report shows ". Terrible, callous disregard for the customer who has spent thousands of dollars on dream vacation.

£500 of Unauthorised Payments Taken

Since Returning from my Cruise, I have had nearly £500 debited from my bank account that I have no account of what this is for and is totally unauthorised. I have contacted Princess Cruises several tmes by phone, email and web contact form. No one is coming back to me, its a clear case of now we have your money, its your problem. Shocking Customer Service. Do Not give this Company Access to your debit / credit card !!

Probably the worst in the industry to answer questions on anything

Probably the worst in the industry to get an answer or help from customer service. You are kept waiting for a very long time, put on hold in the blink of an eye and NEVER get answers from anyone. I had an issue and was told I would get a email response from them within 3-5 days. It has been two weeks. Don’t sail with them. If you have issues, forget it. You will never hear from them.

Excursions DON'T use their iwn

Excursions, do not use them for your trips. They do not plan ahead for public holidays, they cancel trips without telling you leaving you late to rearrange, they are often three fold more expensive, groups are too large thus hurried and they are not overly concerned with negative feedback. We use Viator or GetYourGuide for well priced smaller groups. Even better deals with same local Operators direct. eg MantaSOS on Ecuador. Some investigation required yet you'll get a more fulfilling experience.

Sky Princess nice ship, room for improvement.

Just returned from a 2wk cruise on the Med on Sky Princess. Vigo, Cadiz, Malaga, Ajaccio, Marseille, Gib and Lisbon. Ports good except Marseille which is a big industrial port. Weather was good, warm and sunny, except for Lisbon which was overcast and chilly. Lovely ship and we had a mini-suite which was nice. We are Elite so had the extras, mini-bar, canopes, robes etc. The food in the main dining rooms was disappointing. The cuts of meat were poor quality, in particular the streaks. The Club steak was tough, chewy and grizzly and the New York strip steak was little better. After some time we decided to forgo the main dining rooms and eat in the buffet and International Cafe were standards were good. Although did miss the 'dining' experience. The entertainment was patchy, the production shows were good, although there was only 3. Glad to see they didn't have the daft booking system, like on Iona. The other big bugbear was the one of the TVs in the room, kept going off and on continually, saying it was trying to reboot. This was very annoying when watching films, which we did a lot due to the lack of entertainment. We felt standards have dropped since we last cruised with Princess pre'covid. The staff were all very helpful and pleasant, better than Iona which we cruised in October. All in all enjoyed the cruise, but feel Princess need to up their game, in particular with regard to the food.

Formal dress code with ball caps and shorts?

We are currently on board of Sky Princess and extremely disappointed with the way administrators of the restaurant interpreting the Dress Code that clear defined in the pre-cruise recommendations. For Smart Casual: Guest attire should be in keeping with what they would wear to a nice restaurant at home. Skirts/dresses, slacks, blouses, and sweaters for women. Pants and collared or dress shirts for men. Pool or beach attire, shorts, ball caps or jeans with fraying and/or holes are not welcomed in the dining room. Shoes must be worn. For the Formal Nights: Evening gown, cocktail dress or elegant pant suit for women. Tuxedo, dark suit or dinner jacket and slacks for men. Unfortunately the administration allow people to come in ball caps and shorts even in Formal Nights. On our complaints they said that the company management do not allow them to stop people to come even if they are in breach of the dress code. One of the Administrators on my complaint said that he only can ask them to take off the caps. I said - Ok. He goes to their table but even without asking turned around and goes back... Another time I said to the Administrator that I actually want to stand up and go out rather than sit near person in shorts... I have spoken to many people on board and all of them filling uncomfortable with this interpretation of the dress code. It is not comfortable to sit in your tuxedo when near people sitting in shorts or ball caps. Company management should decide - either they enforce the rules or they should discard them completely. Next time we will think twice before make a booking for Princess cruise. I believe other people feel the same.

Do not let this company book your…

Do not let this company book your flights. They leave booking far too late, resulting in higher flight costs. Book the flights on your own. I have incurred over £1000 of additional flight costs due to this. I had even chased them and given instructions to book them as soon as they were available. First time cruising.

We are just on our way home from 2 weeks in the Mediterranean. It’s our first cruise and we have been blown away with how amazing it is. The staff on board are wonderful and go above and beyond to help everyone on board. So glad I didn’t read the negative reviews before! We have already booked our next cruise for 2025. Five star luxury and the itinerary was amazing.

Food is really bad

Food is really bad, same food everyday. Very little vegetarian options. Worst bit is they closed dinning one day. So that they have more business on speciality restaurant. The food thirr restaurant suks. Carnival,Royal Caribbean have alot better food, entertainment and rooms. Rooms have lots of safety hazards.

First and last cruise with Princess

Lovely ship. Plus & Premium package mis sold changes made after we had paid in full. Rude guest services staff. Lack of information about flight itinerary booked via Princess prior to departure. Excursions expensive and not enough time at main attractions. Too much up selling. Medallion App only works if bar staff record drinks properly. Had to constantly go to guest services to have charges removed.

The customer service is the worst ever

The customer service is the worst ever. There are 8 of us traveling together and they have tied our reservations together 4 times so it looks like 28 of us traveling together. When trying to book reservations for Dinner it wont let me because I am booking a table for 28. I have at this point been on the phone with customer service 3 times 3 different agents. 5 hours and nothing has been corrected. Its a NIGHTMARE!!!!

Very bad customer service

Very bad customer service, I spent about 45 mins with a rep on the phone and she never emailed me Back with the quote if she had the wrong email she should have called me. Spent another 45 mins this morning and again no email or call rang up stating I was expecting an email and no one could help me…waste of time and energy bust workimg parent and the reps don’t always speak English so it’s fustrating

Sun Princess: What’s Princess Cruises’ most ‘elevated’ ship really like?

Sun Princess is not only the biggest ship in the Princess fleet but comes with many firsts and innovations for the brand. But with innovation and firsts comes risks. We cruised from Athens to Barcelona to find out what Sun Princess is really like.

Princess Cruises describes Sun Princess , the first ship in their Sphere Class, as an elevated cruise experience with a greater focus on lifting the quality of all amenities, services and experiences. And to deliver this elevated experience they have both wielded the knife and waved a magic wand.

The Sun Princess is the biggest ship in the Princess fleet.

Wedding chapel, gone. Art gallery, gone. Plastic shower curtain that sticks to you, gone. In their place, there is an embarrassment of ‘new’ and ‘firsts’ and ‘mosts’:  

– More balconies than any other Princess ship. – A new geodesic dome that acts as both a sun deck and performance space where three of the four new cirque-inspired productions are staged. – A new small arena theatre-in-the-round style entertainment stage.  – A host of new restaurants. – A ‘first at sea’ magic show housed in a secret bar.  – A new kid-friendly active play area that includes a ropes course.   

In reality, Sun Princess is pushing the boat out (bad pun intended) on what a Princess Cruise really offers which raises two questions. Will they be able to keep their incredibly loyal customers happy? Will they attract new customers with the Sun Princess and more Sphere Class ships due in the coming years?  

This following review will help you answer those and other questions in detail, but for those who want the headline, here is the summary.

Sun Princess Review Summary

She is a sparkling, glorious new ship who’s decor and aesthetic is most certainly elevated. 

Princess is a traditional cruise brand, steeped in its Love Boat roots and Sun Princess doesn’t stray too far from these successful foundations, just some necessary tweaks and updates (shower curtains being exhibit A). 

The entertainment on board is smart and contemporary while the food a jump up in class for Princess, which is typically loved by passengers. 

For example, Sun Princess served up the the best steak I have had in any main dining room of any cruise ship. As the dining room is the bellwether for a cruise ship’s standard of culinary offerings, it is a very good sign.

The Medallion technology adds value to the experience and the elevated stateroom decor, space and design is a more sophisticated Princess experience.

The addition of more kid focused facilities will certainly please the multigenerational and Gramping (grandparents taking grandchildren and leaving the second generation at home) cruisers.

Sun Princess – what we loved

Medallion  .

It’s not new but the Princess Cruise’s Medallion (they confusingly call it Medallion Class which makes you think it is specific to some fancy suite class, but is across the entire fleet and all cabin classes) is a wonder.  

About the size of a 20-cent coin, The Medallion is a wearable disc. It will open your stateroom door upon your approach, and work as a credit card.  

The device also alerts staff to your name and assists with service. Staff will know your preferences for things like drinks or coffee orders. It can feel a little Big Brother the first time a barman who has never served you before addresses you by name, but after a while you like it.   

The Dome  

This geodesic dome is a ‘first’ and therefore obviously ‘new’ on Sun Princess .  It looks like a mega-fauna armadillo has climbed aboard and fallen asleep on the bow at decks 17 and 18. The unusual shape houses a multi-use day/night space.   

During daylight hours this tiered seating across both decks is a covered sunning space with a pool. The pool is a clever indoor/outdoor innovation that passes under the dome wall to emerge on the Sea View Terrace. It also connects the two most forward lounging spaces.  

At night the pool section under the Dome is covered to create a stage for a new series of productions. Intelligent design has imbedded the lighting and staging technology within the dome structure to facilitate aerial cirque performances across the entire space.   

The only challenge is the Dome only seats 250, so it is not unusual for guests to start claiming their seats 45 minutes before the show time to avoid missing out.

Princess Arena  

A 270-degree ‘keyhole’ performance space, the Arena seats 990 but feels far more intimate. The tiered plush seating feels very close to the stage even in the back few rows.   

Sabatini  

The Italian Specialty dining on board all Princess ships is excellent. And the highlight, without a doubt, is the Lobster Tortellini. It is so good I would happily eat at Sabatini ’s every night.  

Umai Teppanyaki  

The first Teppanyaki on board a Princess ship, Umai is not just a great meal. The space is a sophisticated enclave that could easily be in Tokyo.   

Add the highly entertaining chefs (“I am your fake Japanese chef for the evening”) who add a great deal of singing, theatre and giggling crowd participation to the experience – and it’s another not-to-be-missed meal.

Spellbound  

A collaboration with LA’s Magic Castle, Spellbound is a dinner and show experience worthy of the additional charge. A magic show can easily become tacky and awkward, however this was quite the opposite.   

After a set menu (just a choice between three mains) dinner with drinks is served in a roped-off section of the Horizons dining room, guests are transferred to the speakeasy bar hidden off the Piazza on deck eight.  

Cocktails at Spellbound come with a side of magic.

The transfer is a little clunky but the bar and 30-seat theatrette where the magic (another bad pun intended) really happens is fantastic.

Entering via hidden doors, the bar area is a dimly lit Victorian mansion of curios and oddities style with deep velvety red sofa seating. The magic shows are entertaining, engaging and “how did they do that” high-quality illusion and conjuring.  

Wine list and cocktails  

Cruise wine lists can be so US-centric as to challenge an Australian palate, but not this one. It’s extensive, covering a significant range from across the globe. The Australian representation on the list is the best available at sea.

For wine lovers, the wine immersions, or experiences, particularly the Super Tuscan tasting, are excellent.   

There are some 200 new cocktails designed just for the Sun Princess . We thoroughly enjoyed the Houdini’s Escape at Spellbound and the Cartagena Cool at Good Spirits.

Sanctuary  

Again, not exclusive to Sun Princess , the Sanctuary Deck  is the adults-only (16 years and above) pool area on deck 18. Typically, the Sanctuary is at the forward of the ship, on Sun Princess it is at the stern.   

The exclusive quiet enclave with a private bar is pure relaxation. The most sought-after seating is at the very stern in the Signature Sun Deck where magnificent views of the wake are reserved for suite guests only.

With anything that is this experimental, there are going to be tweaks over the coming reiterations of the Sphere class of ship.   

Let the (sun)light in  

The eponymous mid-ship spheres straddle the Piazza like Princess Leia’s buns and bring a lot of light into the centre of the ship. However, many of the other internal spaces – particularly the eateries – on the ship are inward-facing cul-de-sacs with no windows or little natural light.

The aft Port side of decks seven and eight are closed. Not utilising this space for the natural light seems like a missed opportunity.

Give us a sign  

The directional signage is not helpful when you are trying to find a location or outlet, particularly if you are looking for something that is not on your current deck. The ship navigator interactive screens help, but not when you are in the lift.   

Smoking Casino  

The Casino on level eight is very much in the heart of the ship and has an internal smoking space that leaks the smell of smoke into the forward lift well on deck eight and even up a few decks of stairs. It is not smoky, but the smell is noticeable on occasion.

Lounging  

One of the secrets to big ship cruising is to find your space. Typically, there are two or three places in and outdoors that are quieter and allow some comfortable lounging in relative peace and quiet.  

We found this at the small outdoor area above the Wakeview terrace, outside of The Catch or Butcher’s Block, and the outdoor heated lounge area on the promenade of the International Cafe, also on deck nine.  

However inside, there was no great lounging space to be found that was relatively peaceful or quiet.   

The Dome, whilst technically indoors, is a very bright glass roof. Further, it’s cramped and more sun lounger than sofa.  

Cabana Mini Suites  

These resort-style staterooms are fantastic in theory but a little clunky in reality and don’t realise their full potential. There is a great stateroom in there, it’s just not quite figured out how to be great yet.

A Cabana Mini Suite is a totally new cabin type, adding a cabana to the stateroom and greatly expanding the outdoor area with a covered yet open room to the balcony.  

This creates a stateroom with four distinct areas (plus the WC); a lounge, the spacious queen-sized bed, the cabana and the balcony.

The Cabana is separated from the bedroom and internal lounge by a sliding door and then the Cabana from the balcony by space-creating bi-fold doors.  

The Cabana has an outdoor two-seater lounge opposite a wall-mounted TV. The flooring is a polished hard surface that presumably can handle any weather. It’s designed for lounging in front of the screen with the bi-fold doors open – which would be a lovely afternoon if that’s what you want to do on a cruise. 

The ability to lounge in such an indoor / outdoor space is very appealing – I should be raving about it. I like it but I didn’t want to use it as much as it deserves.

The solution (I am spit-balling) is probably to upgrade the lounge to a more plush outdoor day bed and reorientate to the outside and view and not a wall-mounted TV. If I want to watch TV I can move the furniture.

It is a great innovation but as the first reiteration, it will be improved with future generations of Sphere class ships.

Sun Princess – who will love it?

Princess Cruise loyalists are lovers of a traditional style cruise. In practice, this is an overabundance of interactive staff-led activities like trivia, bingo, wine tasting, ballroom dance classes, Zumba dance classes, etc.  

Plus, themed evenings, often with a dress code and a photo op in your glammed-up gear. The dress code should not put people off, as formal is very much in the eye of the beholder.

This is all present on Sun and is elevated, as claimed, with modern updated decor and both traditional and more lively entertainment.  

By ‘lively’ entertainment we mean not as sedate as other Princess cruises. For example, one of the late evening music performances is a rock show that plays the very best of the ’70s and ’80s. Think Led Zeppelin, AC/DC and Eric Clapton ‘turned it up to 11’ in the Piazza. They drew a great crowd of both those who saw these rock legends live in the ’70s and others who came to enjoy them later via radio.  

The Spellbound show and the productions from Cirque Eloize (think Cirque De Soleil, light) are also examples of elevated and more contemporary entertainment.

The more traditional Princess loyalists were a little disconcerted with the size of the ship, but I would put that down to the unfamiliar. In time they would probably come around.

While families do cruise on Princess, the reality is more intergenerational and couples. The kid’s clubs and entertainment are acceptable, but would not suit eight to 17-year-olds on an itinerary with multiple consecutive sea days. They would need to be getting off and exploring ports most days.  

For non-Princess loyalists, Sun Princess suits active couples who want an easy and simple way to see new parts of the world with entertainment and options to upgrade their meal and beverage experiences without fuss.

The Sun Princess will be sailing the Mediterranean and Caribbean itineraries in 2024 and 2025.   

Princess Cruises packages explained  

There are two package types onboard all Princess Cruises; Premiere and Plus.

Princess Cruises Princess Plus Package

The Princess Plus package is the entry-level package and includes:  

– Wi-fi for one device. – Beverage Package including the post mix soft drinks, specialty coffee and tea, cocktails, wine and spirits up to $22 (onboard this is US$15) plus 25 per cent off any bottle of wine. – Premium desserts are available at the Gelataria and some coffee outlets, thinks sundaes etc. – Fitness Classes, which incur a charge for non-package guests, are included. – Casual dining twice at the non-complimentary casual outlets (but not the Specialty Dining) like Alfredo’s Pizza or Kai Sushi. – OceanNow delivery, which translates to room service but anywhere you may be on the ship.

Princess values the package at $170 a day and charges $65 per day per person.   

Princess Cruises Princess Premier Package

The Princess Premier package ups the levels of the Plus package, with a few additional extras. The package includes:  

– Wi-fi for four devices. – Premier Beverage Package which is the same as the Plus Package but wine and spirits up to $30 (onboard US$20). – Specialty Dining on two occasions. – Reserved Theatre seating for the production shows. – Casual Dining as often as you like. – Photo package which delivers endless digital versions of your pictures plus three prints. – Premium Desserts, as per the Plus package. – Fitness Classes, as per the Plus package. – OceanNow, as per the Plus package.  

Princess values the package at $313 a day and charges $95 per day per person.   

Sun Princess suites and staterooms  

There are 2157 staterooms onboard Sun Princess , including 80 suites. There are 51 wheelchair-accessible staterooms.  

The suites are all considered part of the Signature Collection, which comes with access to the private Signature Restaurant, Signature Lounge and Signature Sun Deck. The Cabana Mini Suites have access to a private outdoor deck.

1. Sky Suites

The premier room type onboard with two beds and two bathrooms with concierge and your-wish-is-my-command service. The Sky Suites are 117 square metres.

Typically, a one-bed spacious suite with balcony sitting and lounge spaces. They range in size from 28 to 59 square metres.

3. Cabana Mini Suites

As described above, a resort-themed stateroom with expanded outdoor space. They are typically 30.5 square metres.  

4. Mini Suites

The suite without the Cabana and a slightly more spacious floor plan; typically 28 square metres.

5. Deluxe Balcony

Judging by the floor plan, this is the Cabana Mini Suite without the additional cabana space. Typically, 21.8 square metres.  

6. Premium Ocean View

Similar floor plan to the Deluxe Balcony except the balcony is now a window with a recessed bench seat. Typically 19.7 square metres.

7. Interior Stateroom

The most compact and affordable of the staterooms, the twin beds and a WC are squeezed into 12.6 or 13.5 square metres.  

Sun Princess restaurants

There are 30 different bars and restaurants onboard Sun Princess . The Signature Collection guests have exclusive access to the Reserve Collection Restaurant and the Signature Restaurant. 

INCLUSIVE DINING

The food outlets included in the cruise fare are:  

The Eatery – The buffet on deck nine seats 742. There is no self-service, all meals are delivered across the counter by staff.   

Horizons Dining Room – The main dining room, spread across three decks; six, seven and eight.

The Lido – Four outlets on the pool deck 17 serve salads (Lido Greens), burgers and hotdogs (Lido Grill), pizza (Lido Slice) and kebabs and tacos (Lido Tacos).  

Promenade dining – On the outside of deck nine, the alfresco options serve burgers and hot dogs (Promenade Grill), ice cream and pizza (Promenade Slice).   

SPECIALTY DINING

These restaurants all have an additional charge:

Alfredo’s Pizzeria – The specialty pizza place with an open oven on deck nine within the Piazza precinct.

Love By Britto – This brand-new establishment is a collaboration with a Miami artist and serves up avant-garde, love-themed dishes. It will be launching in June 2024.  

Makoto Ocean – The sushi house on deck eight in the Piazza precinct (it used to be called Kai Sushi).   

O’Malley’s Irish Pub – A first for Princess, O’Malleys is pub food with lively Irish singing and music, on deck seven in the Piazza precinct.  

Sabatini’s – Located on deck eight, Sabatini’s is the Italian eatery found on all Princess Cruises, and a deserved crowd favourite.  

Crown Grill – The signature steakhouse restaurant across all Princess Cruises, found tucked in behind O’Malley’s and opposite Princess Live on deck seven.

The Butcher’s Table – This new concept launched on Sun Princess delivers six different small portions of Tuscan meats served with chianti and Italian sides. It is found on deck nine aft.  

The Catch by Rudi – A specialty seafood restaurant that shares a space with the Butcher’s Block on deck nine aft.  

Umai Teppanyaki & Hotpot – One of our favourites, this lively eatery is also great food. The restaurant is hard to find near the mid-ship lift well on deck eight.

Sun Princess bars

Bellini’s – As you would expect the Italian-inspired cocktail bar in the Piazza precinct on deck seven.  

Crooners – The crowd favourite and on all Princess cruises, Crooners is found on deck eight in the Piazza precinct.   

Good Spirits – Tucked in behind Princess Live on deck seven, this is a secret space serving up a significant collection of cocktails thanks to a collaboration with Rob Floyd, a US celebrity mixologist.  

Sea View Bar – At the bow of the ship outside the Dome, this is often an overlooked bar well worth an afternoon sunsetter.  

Wake View Terrace – The small sun deck space with an infinity edge pool on deck eight is a sought-after spot, so grab your spot at about 4pm and then enjoy one of the great vistas, the wake, with a drink.

7 Things I Loved, Plus 4 Things I Didn’t During Princess’s Alaska Cruisetour

On my first morning after embarking on the Royal Princess Hamilton Cruise ship on a sea and land cruise from Vancouver through the Inside Passage of Alaska and up to Fairbanks, I sat on my portside balcony and watched the gray seas as the pale morning sun rose.

A sudden movement caught my eye, and the head of a humpback whale rose directly out of the water, suspended for a brief moment before it disappeared under the sea.

“Did I just see that?” I muttered sleepily to myself. As if to answer me, the telltale poof of water shot out of the sea, followed by the dark, subtle hump of the whale as he followed alongside our massive 1,083-foot long ship .

Instantly, I ran inside to wake my travel buddy, but by the time he got to the balcony, the whale was long gone. However, that whale sighting was a premonition of extraordinary adventures to come on the Princess Cruises’ 12-17 day Connoisseur Alaska Cruisetour .

From luscious food choices and all-day entertainment to excursions and off-shore adventures through Alaska’s small coastal communities, the Alaska Cruisetour was probably one of the most fun trips I had taken all year. While I had my first cruise in January on a small excursion ship, I was invited and hosted by Princess Cruises to experience my first “big” cruise ship. For some reason, I had poo-pooed the idea of the big “floating city” cruise ships in the past, but the 12 days of sailing and traveling with Princess changed my mind.

I get it now. I get why people dream of cruises and just how easy it is to relax and just enjoy when you are being pampered, cared for, and catered to by a cruise ship company. Coming from the eyes of a brand-new cruiser (this won’t be my last cruise, I guarantee you), here are the seven things I loved — plus the four things I didn’t — during the Princess Alaska Cruisetour.

7 Things I Loved

1. medallion magnificant and the staff.

The Royal Princess is a Princess MedallionClass™ ship with a capacity of 3,560 guests. The MedallionClass ships use touchless technologies in the form of a small, quarter-sized customizable Medallion and an app to enhance and personalize individual experiences and health protocols. 

This thing is so cool. I had my Medallion customized with an astrological symbol and ordered the rubber wristband. While wearing it, the Medallion automatically unlocks and locks my stateroom door as I enter it, allows staff to find me anywhere on the ship to deliver my daily Bloody Mary, allows for touch-free boarding and purchases, let me find my travel companion on the ship, and more. 

“So let’s say you’re out tanning by the pool and you want to get some extra sunscreen, you can go on the app on your phone and order sunscreen which will be purchased through the app and delivered to you where you are anywhere on the ship,” said Briana Latner, public relations and marketing for Princess Cruises. “We’ve also introduced ‘Dine My Way,’ which helps you make reservations in the main dining rooms and the specialty dining, helps get rid of wait times and helps you with your special preferences.”

Another feature of the Princess Medallion is the Ocean Compass, which allows you to locate and message your travel companions. Whomever you are traveling with is automatically named as travel companions in the app, but you can remove each other if you choose to.

“Sometimes there are kids who are teenagers. They can go off on their own, but you want to make sure you know where they are and they’re safe,” Latner said. “Many people who are traveling with parents or the elderly who may get disoriented find it’s been really helpful  to be able to find each other too.”

Travel blogger Erin Cohen said the Medallion created a level of ease on her trip that shocked her.

“It makes you eat too much,” she laughed. “Everything comes to you at the snap of a finger or the touch of a button. The Medallion makes life almost too easy, but it’s great.”

Combined with the Princess Medallion, the staff on the boat is top-notch. Our stateroom was cleaned twice a day at least (the Medallion lets staff know when you are out of your room so they don’t disturb you), the bartenders all know your name and preferred drink, and every crewmember greets you with a cheerful hello.

Using the app and the Medallion was super convenient when it came to purchases, ordering, getting around, and more.

Pro Tip: Download the app before you embark on the cruise to upload safety and health documents, pre-book activities and dining, and get used to all the features. It’s a lot to learn. You can order the Medallion ahead of time and either have it sent to you prior to the cruise or you can pick it up upon embarkation.

Fun Fact: The Pacific Princess was the star ship in the 1977 television series called The Love Boat . That series also made the concept of a sea-going vacation popular with millions of people and has been widely credited with fueling the dramatic expansion of the cruise industry.

2. By Land And By Sea

The Royal Princess Alaska Cruisetours are a combo land and sea experience. In addition to a 7-day Voyage of the Glaciers Alaska cruise that includes two glacier-viewing experiences and stops in the small Alaskan communities of Juneau, Ketchikan, Skagway, and Whittier (Anchorage), you’ll also explore Alaska’s interior with a guided land exploration tour.

Once you’ve disembarked from the ship, you can spend 3 or more nights on land at the various Princess Wilderness Lodges , including the Kenai Princess Wilderness Lodge, the Mt. McKinley Princess Wilderness Lodge, the Denali Princess Wilderness Lodge, and the Fairbanks Princess Wilderness Lodge.

These lodges are situated riverside near the legendary Denali National Park and Preserve, on the stunningly beautiful Kenai Peninsula, and in Fairbanks. Each lodge offers its own unique personality.

You will also travel by rail in a private Princess Cruises scenic railroad car and by tour bus to the various locations.

We were on the Connoisseur Alaska Cruisetour , which offers the highest level of service with a dedicated tour director, the 7-day Voyages of the Glaciers cruise, 5-10 nights on land, travel on the Princess Alaska rail service, stays at Kenai Fjords National Park and Denali National Park , a Tundra Wilderness Tour into Denali National Park (We saw three grizzly bears!), sightseeing opportunities, and most meals included.

What I loved about this option was the ability to see not only the glaciers and wonders of coastal Alaska along the Inside Passage, but a chance to explore the famed national parks of Alaska’s rugged and beautiful interior. It truly was the best of both worlds.

“You see pictures but to see it in person is just like, it’s hard to believe this is even real. The whole time I was in Alaska, I just kept saying it was like a movie set,” said Cohen.

3. All The Choices (And Unlimited Drinks)

So maybe you are craving a pepperoni pizza while you lounge in one of the many hot tubs on the 16th-floor deck. Maybe one night, all you dream of is a big juicy steak with a Maine lobster tail. Maybe you want a lot of choices from the all-day buffet.

On the Royal Princess, the more than a dozen dining choices come in many different flavors, ranging from high-end steakhouse to Italian cuisine to sushi. Like many cruise ships, the Royal Princess has a buffet that features Asian, Indian, American, and Latino cuisine, as well as breakfast items, fresh fruit, a pastry bar, and more. On the fifth floor in the central Vista, a small deli is open 24/7 for the late night/early morning crowd.

The ship also has numerous bars, and because we were given the unlimited drinks option, we put those to good use. From the poolside bars to the cozy Wheelhouse Bar with its live music, you’ll not have to worry about finding the perfect cocktail or Alaska beer to sip on. 

Although I dined at the fancy Crown Grill and Sabatini’s, the buffet was our go-to option most days due to the sheer variety of foods to choose from. Be warned, though: It’s easy to let your eyes be bigger than your stomach, and you can end up eating more than you planned because the food is just so tasty.

4. Lots Of Viewing Areas

The Alaska Cruisetour I was on started from Vancouver and sailed through Alaska’s Inside Passage through some of the most beautiful scenery I’d ever seen. With glaciers, waterfalls, misty mountains, and otters and whales frolicking in the waves, it would be a crime not to take it all in.

I loved all the decks and viewing areas on the Royal Princess. From our own private balcony to picture windows throughout the ship to expansive decks, the views just kept coming.

Pro Tip: Bring binoculars! I really regretted not bringing the pair I own. Trust me, you won’t regret taking them when the whales and otters make their appearance.

5. Performances And Special Programs

You’ll never get bored on this Cruisetour. Starting as early as 6 a.m. every day, the Royal Princess has events, special programs, classes, naturalist talks, and fun activities. From morning stretching on the deck to art auctions and contests to game shows and line dancing classes, this ship doesn’t stop!

In addition to the hourly activities, excursions, and options during the day, The Royal Princess presents big musical shows, comedians, naturalist talks, and more in its expansive Princess Theatre. The smaller bars and venues feature live musicians and fun, silly game shows while the main Vista area of the fifth floor holds concerts and dance parties. The ship even has a disco, a hopping casino with slots and table games, a very large fitness area on the 17th deck, poolside movies, a pickleball court, a Discovery Camp for kids, and more.

Every day, a daily newsletter listing all the activities on the ship is delivered to your room, so it’s easy to find and choose what performances or classes you’d like to take part in. If you are bored at all on this ship, that’s on you! Seriously, you’ll have a hard time picking which fun activity to do.

6. Being Pampered

After days of hiking, exploring Alaska’s small communities, whale watching, dancing all night, and maybe having one too many cocktails, it’s nice to be pampered. The Royal Princess’ onboard Lotus Spa brings you to a place of peace and Zen with services like traditional massage, acupuncture, facials like the La Therapie HydraLift facial, couples massage, and Aroma Stone Therapy Massage.

After relaxing, cruisers can head to The Enclave , a getaway of thermal suites and a hydro-therapy pool with a cascading rain shower and therapeutic air jets. Sweat out your worries at a Turkish-style steam bath, steam rooms, and dry saunas for purification and detoxification, then doze off on the heated stone beds or relaxing water beds.

Another pampering experience is Royal Princess’ The Sanctuary , an adult-only retreat on the top deck with private cabanas, food and drink, and al fresco massages. The “Serenity Stewards” are quietly efficient in delivering everything you need, from fresh mimosas to towels.

7. All The Excursions

With 12 days of adventure, it would be impossible for me to list all the land and sea excursions available through the Royal Princess Cruisetour. Thankfully, you’ll be able to find all the options through the Medallion app and with the onboard concierges.

For my excursions, I went out on a crab boat in Ketchikan to learn about crab harvesting and to stuff myself silly on Dungeness crab, roared up winding mountain trails on a UTV, spotted whales, climbed glaciers, kayaked pristine mountain glacial lakes, toured and spotted wildlife on a Tundra Wilderness Tour in Denali National Park and so much more.

The excursions range from the sedate and relaxing to the wild and extreme, so there’s a little bit of everything for anyone. You can see the list of available excursions here .

4 Things I Didn’t Love

1. prices of excursions.

Alaska is expensive. There’s no getting around that fact. Being able to enjoy the Alaska landscape on a guided excursion is going to cost you. Some of the most expensive excursions include flights on small planes and helicopters, but they tend to be the most popular as well, like the Denali Flightseeing tours and helicopter tours of surrounding glaciers.

You aren’t required to purchase excursions, however. If you’d rather explore the different ports on your own, you can do that too.

2. Not Enough Time In Each Port Or Land Lodge

When you are cruising, you have a schedule to keep. You might fall in love with tiny little Skagway, but you only have a day in port. You may want to spend more time at the Kenai Princess Wilderness Lodge with its cozy rooms and fireplaces, but you only have one night.

The fact that you do not have control over how long you can stay in any one place is certainly not Princess’ fault, but it is a bummer and a fact of life when cruising.

3. No Coffee In The Room

One of my biggest pet peeves in life is not having coffee available in my room when traveling. Yes, ordering coffee to the room was easy and the staff at Princess were on top of my caffeine addiction, but it would have been nice to have one of those little coffee makers tucked away so I could make my own coffee.

One great thing about the Royal Princess is the ability to order coffee and breakfast the night before. Each day, you can fill out a form listing what items you’d like to order and what time they should be delivered, so that’s convenient.

4. Staffing Problems At The Lodges

Like so many other destinations, Alaska has a worker shortage. That desperate need for seasonal and long-term employees has led to some staffing issues at some of the lodges. While the Royal Princess ship boasts 1,346 crew members from more than 30 different countries, some of the lodges had problems filling spots, which led to slowdowns, some maintenance issues, and longer wait times.

My best advice is to stay patient with the destinations and with the staff that is working. Everyone is doing the best they can with less.

All in all, my first “big cruise” experience was stellar and has made me a believer! Hopefully, this won’t be my last cruise, and if you yearn for an easy, well-organized way to experience Alaska, the Royal Princess Alaska Cruisetour is the way to go.

Bigger ship, better views: 3 takeaways from Princess Cruises' newest vessel

I was rushing to make my dinner reservation on Princess Cruises’ new ship. But when I arrived at the restaurant, the view made me stop.

From the windows at the sushi eatery Makoto Ocean – part of a sphere-shaped structure near the middle of the vessel – I saw the sun sinking below the horizon, a reddish-orange dot on the Mediterranean Sea. The Sun Princess facilitates scenes like that by design.

“We wanted to make sure that within how we designed the (venues) and placed the furniture, we gave maximum opportunity for our guests to be able to celebrate those outward views,” Denise Saviss, Princess’ vice president of entertainment experience, told USA TODAY. “It is really, really unique to have so much glass on the ship.”

That was one of several striking features during a recent sailing (the ship is now cruising the Mediterranean before it moves to the Caribbean in October). Here are three takeaways from the first in the line’s aptly named Sphere Class.

1. The design showcases views at sea and in port

Makoto isn’t the only venue that offers that kind of view.

Other spaces inside the Sphere – which also houses lobby-slash-entertainment venue The Piazza – feature similarly sweeping vistas across decks 7, 8 and 9. I watched the light sparkle on the water while I sipped coffee one morning at International Café, and patrons dining at Alfredo’s Pizzeria can take in the scenery during their meal from many seats.

That’s also true elsewhere on the ship. At Horizons Dining Room, floor-to-ceiling windows face the ship’s wake. At the other end of the vessel, the Dome, a geodesic structure that Princess has said was inspired by the hills of Santorini, is like a massive solarium.

The space – which will also host shows including acrobatics – has multiple tiers of loungers, an indoor-outdoor pool and the Cascade Bar (which comes in handy for cooling off, as it felt a bit muggy in the Dome at one point on a sunny sea day).

The overall effect helped to bring the outside in.

2. The ship is bigger but still intimate

Sun Princess is the largest ship in the Princess fleet, and the 21-deck vessel can accommodate 4,300 guests. But that doesn’t mean everything is huge.

Given the scale of the offerings, a number of spaces on board feel notably intimate. One night, I walked to Good Spirits at Sea, a cocktail bar crafted in partnership with mixologist Rob Floyd that also hosts classes, and thought I was lost before stumbling upon it tucked around a corner on Deck 7. Inside, the 40-person venue offered a laid-back alternative to other more boisterous nightlife options.

On Deck 9, the ship’s buffet-like venue, The Eatery, gives way to narrower hallways toward the aft with backlit wood paneling and benches. At the end, they open back up to reveal specialty restaurants The Catch by Rudi and The Butcher’s Block by Dario (from Princess’ head of culinary arts, Rudi Sodamin, and in partnership with famed butcher Dario Cecchini, respectively).

Even the multi-configuration Princess Arena felt cozier than its near-1,000-guest capacity would suggest. I sat in the second-to-last row of my section for a performance by the vocal group ODY·C and was still close enough to see clearly.

3. The line leans into family-friendly activities

Part of Sun Princess’ expanded footprint has been used to broaden the line’s family offerings.

Park19, a new space on the ship’s top decks, features a variety of activities in an open-air setting. Saviss said the line worked to balance the interests of core customers and a growing family market “and make sure we're prioritizing spaces that everybody can enjoy.”

“There are some attractions that I think naturally, at first blush, people would say, ‘Oh, it's just for kids,’ but actually, the space is really comprehensive,” she said. “Our attractions are available for many different levels of ability and mobility.”

Those include Coastal Climb, an obstacle course that culminates in 360-degree views from The Lookout observation deck (the highest point accessible to guests on the ship, also reachable via elevator) and The Net ropes course.

On Sea Breeze, billed as the first Rollglider on a cruise ship, passengers will glide along the outer edges of the ship on an electric track (the ride will also be ADA-accessible, though Saviss said some mobility is required for maneuvering into the seat).

It’s as close as the ship gets to an amusement park (Princess’ version). “We're not running the rat race, if you will, of like, who can do it bigger, better,” Saviss said. “If you want to just have a really incredible bird's-eye view of Sun Princess, and in and around where the ship is sailing, you can do that. But there is an option to push a little lever while you're riding it and dial up the speed a bit faster, and then it does become a bit more thrilling.”

The ride was not yet available when I was on board, as the line moved through a testing, certification and training process, but is expected to open on April 27. Sun Princess’ original launch was delayed with the cruise line citing “additional technical work” needed at the shipyard, which pushed back the opening of some onboard amenities.

When is the best time to take a cruise?: We broke it down by region.

There is also a hammock area to chill when guests need a break, a recreational court that can host activities from pingpong to morning meditation, a jogging track and more. Elsewhere on board, guests will find the Firefly Park kids club and hangout spaces Neon Grove and The Underground for tweens and teens, respectively.
