The 8 Best Monterey Wineries For Visitors

CWA Staff [March 2021]

best monterey vineyards

We are often asked, "What are the best Monterey wineries to visit?". Some wine lovers really surprise us though. When they think of great California wine, they forget about Monterey . Beautiful Monterey, the coastal town with the big aquarium, hello? knock knock, we got wine!

Monterey is home to over 150 wineries with a wide variety of grape varietals that will have you questioning - Napa, who? Monterey, because of its cool climate, is better suited to growing Riesling and Pinot Noir grapes. However, just a short drive further south and east you’re going to pick up some warmer climates so Bordeaux varietals of Cabernet and Merlot are better suited for these soils. It’s like having two worlds in one. Or at least a place where you can sip Riesling and Cabernet, get a little buzz, then go stare at the hypnotic jellyfish at the Monterey Bay Aquarium.

It’s hard to choose among 150 wineries, but here are eight which are exceptional. There are our must see and taste wineries of Monterey.

The 8 Best Monterey Wineries for Visitors:

Folktale winery.

folktale winery monterey

Tasting Fee: $20

Update: [You can reserve an outdoor tasting at Folktale Winery. The cost to hold your reservation is $15. Once you are there, you can order food and wine in their wine garden. They are not accepting walk-in tastings for now]

Expect to spend some quality time at Folktale Winery. The winemakers created an experience for visitors that is about more than just wine tasting. You can catch the ocean breeze from the Pacific that is just five miles away, enjoy live music from local bands, do yoga in the vineyards, take a tour, and enjoy chef-prepared small plates one of the best Monterey wineries.

Don't get us wrong, the wine is still the main reason to visit Folktale. To start, you are greeted with a sample glass of their bubbly! The wines you can sample include sparkling brut, sparkling rosé, Grenache, Chardonnay and red blends.  Tastings are $20 per person for a flight of 6. Channel your inner child or college freshman and enjoy giant dominoes and Jenga in their courtyard. Added bonus: dogs are also welcome at Folktale.

Channel your inner child or college freshman and enjoy giant dominoes and Jenga in their courtyard while you decide which bottle to buy. Traveling with Fido? Dogs are welcome at this fun Monterey winery!

Hahn Family Wines

Tasting Fee: $20 ( free tasting for Priority Wine Pass holders )

Update: [Hahn currently offers one tasting experience. You can taste a flight of five wines on their tasting deck that overlooks the Salinas Valley and the Hahn vineyards. You need to book an appointment in advance]

Hahn Family Wines is our next favorite place to visit in Monterey Wine Country. You may be familiar with their supermarket wine offerings and think this isn't the place to stop. You would be wrong for thinking that. The Hahn Family is a medium/large wine producer and they do offer a range of sub $15 wines that are great for the mass market. They also have a number of other labels that you probably aren't aware of. These are where you should focus when you visit the tasting room. Specifically, select the tasting that features wine from their Lucienne label.

The winery tasting room off the beaten path. The tasting deck offers views of the Salinas Valley and the Pinnacles national forest in the distance. This is the perfect place to spend an hour sipping wine and forgetting any cares.

Pierce Ranch Vineyards

pierce ranch best monterey wineries

Tasting Fee: $5

This is one of the best Monterey wineries for visitors who love old-world wines. It's like you can take your palate on a trip to Europe without leaving Monterey. What a great way to save on airfare.

Pierce Ranch Vineyards specializes in producing estate wines of Spanish and Portuguese varietals. Think Tempranillo and Albarino. Their wines are small lot production so seeing “SOLD OUT” signs are common. You should make sure to pick up a few bottles!

One of their most popular is the Tourbillion, a medium-bodied wine aged in French oak for 18 months and evokes flavors of ripe raspberry and plums with a hint of lavender. Visit their tasting room in a cozy little cottage off the beaten path. Buy a bottle and the tasting fee is waived, but don’t feel pressured because the tasting fee is a steal at $5 for 6 tastings.

De Tierra Vineyards

De Tierra Vineyards Monterey

Tasting Fee: $15

Visiting De Tierra Vineyard's tasting room in downtown Carmel may seem like a grown-up Summer camp - trivia nights, paint nights, yoga in the garden, wine classes. The Puzzler, a red blend, is a wine club member's favorite with notes of smoked meat, fig, and earthy notes of mushroom and olive. A tasting flight of 6 wines is under $20 and the fee is waived if you purchase two bottles. The grapes are sourced throughout Monterey County providing many varietals that include Syrah, Cab Franc, Rosé, and Riesling.

Make sure you add this to your list of the best Carmel By The Sea wineries. There are a number of tasting rooms in town, so it can be fun to create a little walking tour. You can quickly compare wines from a number of small producers and mix in some food pairings. What a great way to spend the day!

Paraiso Vineyards by Smith Family Wines

paraiso vineyards

Tasting Fee: $15 ( free tasting for Priority Wine Pass holders )

One of the beauties of tasting wine in Monterey is the mix of quaint in-town tasting rooms and the extensive wine estates in the rural areas. Paraiso needs to be on your list when you decide it's time to head out into the countryside.

You'll be able to taste three different wine brands from the Smith Family here. The surrounding are idyllic with views of their estate vineyards and the valley stretching out in front of you. We suggest you head out to the deck with your glass. This is a great way to get a sense of place. You could also find a spot near their fire pit as you sip their SLH Chardonnay and Pinot Noir.

The ambiance and quality wines make this one of the best Monterey wineries to visit.

Scheid Vineyards

Tasting Fee: $10

Schneid Vineyards is a family-owned winery producing award-winning wines for nearly 50 years. The winemakers are dedicated to sustainability practices with 100% drip irrigation, efficient heating and cooling technologies, and “owl boxes” where owls perch on at night to prevent gophers and field mice from damaging the harvest. The tasting room is located in Carmel and is open daily offering two different wine tasting flights each day and Reserve flights available on the weekends.

Caraccioli Cellars

Caraccioli Cellars

Caraccioli Cellars is another one of the best Monterey wineries to visit. Quality over quantity is the motto at Caraccioli. You’ll find meticulously cared-for grapes (hand-picked and placed in small totes to avoid any stress, premature crushing) that become bold flavors for their Estate wines and Bruts.

The sleek and trendy tasting room outfitted with dark walls and contemporary accents is a marvel for any visitor looking to get cozy with a flight of wine. Enjoy a tasting of six wines for just $20 and add on a tasty cheese and charcuterie plate or Caviar topped potato chips if you’re feeling extra fancy.

Past Entries On Our List Of The Best Monterey Wineries

Carmel ridge winery.

carmel ridge winery

Tasting Fee: $16

There is a lot of love that goes into producing a bottle of Carmel Ridge wine. Going back to traditional techniques, grapes are hand-harvested for a small lot production, and wine is aged in French oak barrels without the use of mechanical pumps. Their enticing Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, Sauvignon Blanc, and Red Blend varietals are what make Carmel Ridge a wine lover’s destination spot. The intimate tasting room is located on the iconic Cannery Row and features wine tasting alongside a gift shop offering gourmet specialties like artisan olive oils and different varieties of vinegar. Enjoy five tastings of both red and white wines (wines vary by the season) for under $20. Hours are listed on their website open daily.

This is a great place to stop before or after visiting the Monterey Bay Aquarium. Don't be afraid of this location. Cannery Row is certainly a tourist spot, but this is a legit winery with great local wines.

7 Best Wineries In Monterey To Visit (2023 Update)

Monterey has several wineries and a couple of dozen Vineyards to tour and these only will guarantee a nice stay in California.

Whether you want to visit only one or all of them, there are plenty of options for you to choose from.

Wine is the most popular drink of choice in Monterey county. For visitors and locals alike, wine tasting and vineyard tours are available throughout the region.

But what are the best wineries and vineyards in Monterey? Are they really worth the journey and the time spent there?

You don’t have to fly all the way to Europe to get that “Authentic” experience with your family or friends. All these wineries in Monterey provide an experience like no other.

This is what you’ll discover here below. We will elaborate on everything you need to know before your journey from the best wineries to the most sophisticated wine to the hotels to relax after a wine tasting session.

Best Time To Visit Monterey

With so many wine-related activities in Monterey, when is a good time to visit this amazing part of California?

Keeping in mind that the Monterey Wine is in June, we would highly recommend staying in town during that period. However, if you’re not planning a vacation in June or want to see fewer crowds, coming earlier during the year is also a great idea.

According to the US Travel News , the best time to travel to Monterey is in April and May. You’ll get to enjoy more pleasant temperatures, food festivals all around, and fewer tourists.

All in all, there is always something nice to do in Monterey and the temperatures are pleasant all year round which will make your preparations easier.

How Many Days Do You Need In Monterey?

With many activities in Monterey such as visiting the aquarium, the incredible wineries, and the beautiful beaches, the number of days spent here depends on what you like to do.

As a whole, we recommend staying at least 3 nights in Monterey to have enough time to visit the city, go whale watching, and visit the best wineries and vineyards among all the activities.

If you are heading north up the coast, Monterey should be next on your list after Big Sur.

What Wine Is Monterey Known For?

The climate is extremely important when growing wine and this is where Monterey has a clear advantage over other places.

Monterey has an elevation of -4 meters above sea level and temperatures are mild and don’t get too hot nor cold.

From August to October, the average high temperature is 20°C and the cold average is 12°C. On the other hand, from December to March, the average high temperature is just under 16°C while the cold is around 7°C.

The rain may fall all year long, but most often during winter months as summers have significantly less rainfall than winters do.

The climate of Monterey County, with its cooling air from the bay and cooler soil temperatures than in other parts of California, makes it easier to grow higher-quality grapes.

According to Sommerliers Choice Awards , Loam Soil is the best to grow grapes, especially Pinot Noir. And Monterey County has a large percentage of it which is the reason why wine here is one of the best in America.

Monterey is most known for the Chardonnay and Pinot Noir wines and these are really the specialty in town that you just can’t travel without tasting.

  • Regular Hahn Estate Tasting – $20 per person – 45 minutes per person
  • Hahn Artisan Tasting – $35 per person – 1 hour
  • Hahn Estate Library Pinot Tasting – $45 per person – 1.5 hour
  • Virtual Tasting – Complimentary and available for club members

Apart from that, they also offer a very unique ATV tour of their vineyards and that is something that is very characteristic of this winery.

For $45 per person, you’ll jump on an educational tour for 1.5 hours up to their wine cellar to discover the winemaking process.

Overall, this is one of the best wineries in Monterey county that you could experience.

De Tierra Vineyards is another one of the vineyards you can’t miss on your Monterey County trip.

With excellent award-winning wine, extremely pleasant tasting sessions, and their calendar full of events such as Trivia nights and live music shows, you won’t be disappointed.

De Tierra Vineyards’ mission is to keep on creating superior Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, and more types of wine. The bottles you can’t miss are the following:

  • 2017 Russell Vineyard Riesling
  • 2016 Monterey Pinot Noir
  • 2016 Monterey Syrah – Voted best of Monterey County

Their wine tasting room is open every day from 1 PM to 6 PM and to 7 PM on Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays.

You’ll have the chance to taste all their delicious wines starting from their Pinot Noir to their Merlot and their award-winning Syrah.

They have a wine club free of membership fees but that will offer lots of advantages. From receiving 20% off on their bottles to 4 complimentary tasting sessions per month, this is certainly something to consider if you’re planning to come again.

To give you an idea, joining purchasing 3 bottles will cost you $90 per shipment, their 4-bottle bundle will set you back $100 per shipment, and their full case of wines $400.

Monterey has a rich wine history and culture. Home to over 150 wineries, the town offers the perfect blend of climate for grape varietals like Riesling or Pinot Noir grapes – cool enough that you’ll never confuse it with Napa .

Monterey County produces some of California’s most delicious and uniquely flavored wines. The scenery itself is enough to make it a must-see destination, especially for ocean lovers who want to get away from the city lights sometimes.

Wine lovers flock here because Monterey has a “unique microclimate” that infuses its grapes with flavor as no other region can provide.

In conclusion, If you’re planning a trip in which you’ll need to squeeze in some whale watching and wine tasting, then your job is done.

Sharing is caring!

We couldn't have asked for a better host for the day. I highly recommend this experience - if I ever get back to Santa Cruz I will definitely do the tour again, but will also request Matt and ask him to take us around to some of the other places we didn't get a chance to visit.

Introducing the Monterey Wine Trail: Tour the Grapes of Steinbeck Country

  • by Laura Ness

monterey bay wine tours

The Monterey winegrowing region is vast—more than 43,000 acres—stretching from the Santa Cruz County border, south to Paso Robles. It encompasses distinct growing regions, including Arroyo Seco, the Santa Lucia Highlands, Chalone, River Road, Carmel Valley and the area along Laureles Grade in the Carmel Highlands, which may one day be approved as the Carmel Coast AVA.

That’s a lot of territory to discover. And several centuries of history as well, beginning with the establishment of the missions in the 1700s, followed by commercial wine production in the early 1900s in the Salinas and Carmel Valleys, then really taking off in the 1960s and 1970s, when some of the largest vineyards were established by visionaries who understood the region’s uniquely beneficial weather conditions.

With so many acres planted, Monterey County’s AVAs today grow more Pinot Noir and coastal Chardonnay than any other winegrowing region in California. The county is vital to the grape economy of California, and grapes are fundamental to both the agricultural and the tourist economies of Monterey County, contributing $1.4 billion in annual economic activity.

While Monterey County is often referred to as the Salad Bowl of the World, it should equally be known as the Garden of Eden for Grapes, to borrow from the area’s most renowned author John Steinbeck, who spent much of his life in the Salinas Valley and endeared generations of Americans to this special place he called East of Eden.

Pioneers like the Wentes from Livermore and the Mirassous from San Jose, along with savvy investors like the late Al Scheid and early visionaries like Nicky Hahn, Jerry MacFarland, Dick Graff and Robb Talbott, established premium vineyards that benefit from the maritime-influenced climate. Later, the Santa Lucia Highlands, led by the Pisoni and Franscioni families, became ground zero for a new style of Pinot Noir, bringing a new wave of investment and interest. Winemakers from all over the state seek out grapes grown in Monterey County, knowing they will have balance and ample acidity, two things vital to making great wine that is drinkable today and can age for many years to come.

monterey bay wine tours

Much of the region is easily discoverable off Highway 101 and to promote visits the Monterey County Vintners and Growers Association (MCVGA) is launching  The Monterey Wine Trail , which will be marked with simple directional signage to make wayfinding as easy as possible for visitors. With the recent barrage of storms, signs have been delayed, along with practically everything else, but rest assured, they are coming.

The Monterey Wine Trail is conveniently located off the Highway 101 corridor, surrounded by the Santa Lucia and Gabilan Mountain ranges. Visitors can immerse themselves in the heart of Monterey Wine Country along the trail and enjoy the quintessential wine country experience.

Monterey Wine Country offers diverse tasting experiences that can easily be split up over three days. From oceanside tastings in Monterey and Carmel to the incomparable country charm of Carmel Valley, to the stunning vineyard views of the Monterey Wine Trail in the Salinas Valley, guests will find wines and views to satisfy everyone’s palate!

Pebble beach food and wine found its ‘roots’ with a return in 2024.

Pebble Beach Food & Wine took place April 4-7, 2024

After a hiatus that felt like an eternity to gastronomes and vinophiles, the announcement that Pebble Beach Food and Wine was making its grand return in 2024 invoked mixed feelings for me. On one hand it was one of the premier food and wine festivals in the U.S., known for a level of opulence and star power only rivaled by Aspen Food and Wine. Purely as someone that covers food and wine this should have been a no-brainer to attend. However my BIPOC identity gave me cause for pause. I’ve attended Pebble Beach Food and Wine before the hiatus and under the previous management team. Let’s just say the most color I’ve seen at these events are in the wine glasses, not represented by the individuals holding them. As I previously stated my concern wasn’t about the culinary; you had me at Maneet Chauhan and Stephanie Izard. It wasn’t about the wine; Bouchaine, Laurent-Perrier, Kosta Browne to name a few of the premium wine brands. To anyone that’s visited The Inn at Spanish Bay in Pebble Beach my issue clearly wasn’t the venue. It was about a lack of attention to diversity and inclusion. How was the festival’s new leadership going to address this? Upon learning about a couple of key partnership, it was clear that they had, and in a big way!

Partnership with The Roots Fund & A21

Even before the official lineup of talent, brands, and seminars were released two things jumped out at me and ultimately determined my attendance, after my initial hesitation. The first was the involvement of A21, a marketing production company founded by CEO Brett Friedman. Friedman’s company has a track record of organizing festivals of this size with annual events such as Atlanta Food & Wine, South Beach Food & Wine, and Whiskies of the World Tour. I have attended several of A21 events so I know the level in which his team executes. A21 events always have a mixture of activities but more importantly a diversity of people. Perhaps it’s A21’s demographics of the staff, including the leadership team. Or perhaps it’s the geographic locations of the events. After speaking with Friedman, it’s his overall strategy. All businesses have an appreciation for green, the color of money, but can they equally value other colors at the same time? A21 has demonstrated that they do!

This leads me to the second reason, The Roots Fund . Led by Ikimi Dubose-Woodson and Carlton McCoy, their mission is to “nourish and enrich the lives of communities of color in the wine industry.” The mission might be simple to describe, but navigating how to work with and incorporate BIPOC is a bit more complicated. Often we see performative gestures as a way to check the box. One of my “favorite” moves is to hire a Chief Diversity Officer and then pat yourself on the back as if that solves your DEI issues faster than ink drying on the employment contract. Then after 10 years we look at the metrics from the same company and there is a marginal increase (if any at all) especially at the executive level. This is not the case with Dubose-Woodson and McCoy. I know them and their work well enough to say they will not associate with those that engage in the performative. Only with those that engage in performance, which means to provide opportunities for those from BIPOC communities to truly demonstrate what we are capable of and be rewarded for it. (They appreciate green too!)

"Pebble Beach Food & Wine has been a staple in food and beverage for years. Looking at the list of chefs, brands, and partners, inclusivity is being paired with luxury. The Roots Fund is representative of an inclusive beverage space, so to be involved as the wine direction team shows the industry changing before our eyes. Pebble Beach Food & Wine is a changemaker in hospitality." - Ikimi Dubose-Woodson, CEO of The Roots Fund

Dubose-Woodson, McCoy, and her team were involved in almost every facet of the festival which is the true partnership communities of color have been ready for.

Diversity of Offerings

The best self-cleaning litter boxes, tested for months, north carolina legislators want to ban masks, even for health reasons, behind the growth of san diego wave fc in their third nwsl season.

Pebble Food and Wine brought back many of festival goers’ favorite activities and seminars . Patrons who purchased a Diamond Package (three package types: Diamond, Platinum, and Gold) had the opportunity to play on the legendary #1 public golf course for 18 holes. Later that evening the festival kicked off with Coast to Coast with The James Beard Foundation: Opening Night. All ticket holders had the opportunity to sample cuisine from James Beard Award winners and nominees like Justin Sutherland of Northern Soul, Brandon Jew of Mister Jew’s, Reem’s Assil of Reem’s California, and several more.

Keith Corbin of Alta Adams at James Beard Opening Night Event

The highlight of my first night was a seminar, “Nick Gislason on Flavor,” hosted by FINE+RARE. To wine aficionados, if the name Nick Gislason sounds familiar, it should. He is Director of Winemaking at Screaming Eagle and the Technical Director of Lopez Island Community Fireworks. To my pleasant surprise, I learned that he is also the co-founder of Hanabi Lager, a brewery in Napa, CA. Hanabi is the Japanese word for firework, which sheds some light on the firework role. Gislason explains that even though he is technically trained in winemaking he takes a flavor-based approach. He could not imagine doing his job without relying heavily on taste, sight, and smell as they are the most acute instruments for winemaking and brewing.

"Wines Views" of Pebble Beach Golf Course at The Lodge at Pebble Beach

My schedule on Friday was packed with events at The Inn at Spanish Bay and its sister property The Lodge at Pebble Beach. While there were shuttles that ran between the properties, I often had to be in two places at once. Luckily, the official automotive partner was Volvo. They were offering courtesy rides in their hybrid or fully electric SUVs so I was on time (sort of) and able to experience as much as possible.

My morning started with a Introduction to Tempos Vega Sicilia and Tempranillo featuring the following Spanish wines:

- Oremus Mandolas 2020, Furmint

- Bodegas Benjamin de Rothschild & Vega Sicilia, Macán 2018, Rioja 100% Tempranillo

- Bodegas Pintia, Pintia 2018, Toro 100% Tempranillo

- Bodegas Alion, Alion 2019, Ribera Del Duero 100% Tempranillo

- Bodegas Vega Sicilia, Valbuena 2017 , Ribera del Duero 96% Tempranillo and 4% merlot

- Bodegas Vega Sicilia, Unico 2013, Ribera del Duero 95% Tempranillo and 5 % Cabernet Sauvignon

- Oremus Aszú, 5 puttonyos 2016, Furmint, Harsevelu, Zeta

Next was diSHEd Lunch: A Celebration and Conversation of Food, Wine & Women with many of my she-roes in food and wine. Chefs Lindsay Autry, Maneet Chauhan, Valerie Chang, and Elizabeth Falkner fed the crowd more than just the cuisine on their plates. They orated about their particular journeys as women in culinary and answered questions from an appreciative crowd.

After a much needed nap, I headed over to The Beach & Tennis Club at the Lodge at Pebble Beach for the California Coastal Pacific Feast hosted by James Beard Award winner Jeremiah Tower. This walk-around tasting felt like an episode of “Noël - this is your California Life,” as I saw some of my favorite chefs and friends like Dustin Vallete of The Matheson, Michael Chang of the Foray, Matt Horn of Horn Barbecue, and Michael Rotondo of Coastal Kitchen.

I loved all of the spirit brands included, but The Art and Legacy of Tequila with Casa Obsidiana at 10am was of particular interest. The legendary Jean-Charles Boisset, known for his JCB Collection of wines, is a co-founder of the premium tequila Obsidiana. It had been a few months since I had seen him so I made sure to tell him, “only you can get me to drink tequila at this time of the morning.” Francisco Quijano, one of ten Master Tequileros in the world, walked us through Casa Obsidiana's three expressions: Blanco, Reposado, and Añejo. I will admit I had to drink about three bottles of Icelandic Glacial Water to make it through the day. Next year let’s make t-shirts that say “Tequila at Ten” for anyone that attends.

Tasting Pavilion at Pebble Beach Food and Wine

I’ve said it before - what would a food and wine festival be without a Grand Tasting? Tasting Pavilion is the signature event of Pebble Beach Food & Wine. For two days (Saturday & Sunday) it brings together everyone working and attending the festival. Chefs, Winemakers, Spirits, special activations, and music are all in one spot for connoisseurs to indulge. If you can’t make the other events during the four-day event, this literally and figuratively gives you a taste. I stayed for about 90 minutes, including some time working on my summer color in the VIP Cabanas before heading back.

Burgers, Bourbon, and Bordeaux Happy Hour was held at the fire pit on the back patio of The Inn at Spanish Bay. With food from John Tesar, David Rose, Alvin Cailan, Leonard Botello IV, and Anna Marie Bayonito, it took some effort not to overeat before dinner. But of course I saw Keith Corbin of Alta Adams with the bigges t Kool Aid smile on his face serving brisket so there is a good chance I overindulged. In my defense there was Bourbon and Bordeaux, so I had to try his food with both separately.

After a quick nap I headed over for dinner. I am a huge fan of Barbuto in NYC so the Quality Italian Dinner: A Feast with Culinary Masters Hosted by Jonathan Waxman is what I chose. Along with mixologist Jason Asher, chefs Giorgio Rapicavoli, Angela Tamura, and James Trees prepared a five-course dinner that left guests feeling like they were in Italy. Also a huge shoutout to Hue Society Sommelier of the Year Cassandra Felix and Beverage Director Molly Brooks. I could have set my watch by the efficiency of the evening. Everything moved like clockwork!

I ended my night at the official After Hours: An Exclusive Late Night Event presented by Southern Glazer's Wine & Spirits. Enjoying cocktails, spirits, and wines from the “Southern G” family while recapping the day with friends and colleagues was an appropriate digestif pairing to end the day.

Sunday Jazz Brunch at Pebble Beach Food and Wine

Last day before heading home up the coast. It ended with a Michelin-starred chef at the Lodge at Pebble Beach’s Fairway 1 Complex, Rogelio Garcia of Auro in Napa Valley . Garcia was hosting To the South, With Love: A Southern Jazz Brunch. Patrons enjoyed crafted dishes by Peter Armellino, Rogelio Garcia, Angela Herrera, Jeffrey Jake, Barb Batiste, and Michael Chang, while grooving to live jazz music by Steve Lucky Trio.

The Verdict

Reflecting on this year's Pebble Beach Food and Wine, the diversity observed did not merely enhance the event—it redefined it. It elevated a prestigious affair into a cultural celebration, showcasing the profound impact of inclusion. The flavors became more vivid, the conversations deeper, and the overall experience significantly more enriching. Diversity proved to be the secret ingredient that rendered this year's gathering truly outstanding. Here's to hoping that this formula continues to be embraced in the years ahead.

Pebble Beach Food and Wine returns April 10-13, 2025.

Ask a question

Do they have toilets or a restroom on deck?

Yes, they have a small bathroom on the boat.

Do they take pictures that we can buy after?

There was a professional photographer on board and they said the pictures were available for purchase. I guess it would depend on whether the photographer was on the trip or not.

We probably saw over 60 whale blow holes, and about 20 whale dives at least and about 10 whale breaches. We lucked out and saw a few pods! I can't tell you how many times we saw the waves and tails. It was gorgeous. You do have to pay attention though as many times they are out on the horizon but they can come closer fairly fast. We were told that we were experiencing something that doesn't happen as often, I feel blessed and very thankful. The crew was awesome and lovely and did not take from the moment only speaking when needed to direct eyes. They also taught us how to recognize what, and we saw dolphins, seals, otters and plethora of birds. Very pleasant and relaxing and stunning experience. They have some refreshments if you didn't pack a water and a small snack for purchase. Your gonna need layers and put your phone down for most the time, so you can soak it in. Exception is for that awesome coastline and occasional breach. I have done point eyes area and not had as much luck. You can get dramamine from them to purchase, and go pee before you leave. I didn't use there one on boat, but I ant imagine it much different then peeing in an airplane. Eat after you get off to finish out your day. Lovely company, highly recommend! Worth it. Tip: tip them when you leave! I noticed after I got caught in the cattle run leaving the boat, but the crew deserved it so I will come back!

Great trip, have gone whale watching with this company several times. This time brought my crew from Venezuela, as they have never seen whales before. When I made the reservations I had asked if they had any Spanish speaking naturalist on board to translate for them. Andrea was awesome, she translated all the bits of information I knew I could not. Great sense of humor, helpful. We did get to see a full breach, wowza. Love this company! Just wish the orcas were out & about on our trip; we did see lots of grey whales , dolphins & seals.

Not enough great words to say about this company! I initially heard this was a dog friendly boat/conpany, however I was nervous for multiple reasons. Upon calling (multiple times) the put any concerns I had to rest with the most friendly and comforting nature. Upon arriving to check in, it was confirmed, these people not only care about their job and the sea life, but their customers both furry and human, as well! We were immediately greeted (with pup treats) by the captain and the staff both on and off the boat. I immediately knew I chose the right company for me and my cancer fighting doggo! While on the boat we were checked on often, and offered anything we needed to make our journey any easier. Everyone was friendly and genuinely caring. We saw so much while out at sea on our tour. I cannot recommend them enough. At one point I thought my dog was gonna wanna go home with captain Scott! They fell in love with one another! Thanks for everything, I wish I remembered your names so I can thank you individually.

This was an absolute amazing trip. The whole crew is very knowledgeable and kind caring people. They have anti nausea medication on board along with light snacks and refreshments. They also have seating on the boat. Make sure to wear sturdy shoes as it can be a wild ride based on the waters and make sure to take extra layers! You may also get wet...

3d time we've gone on this tour and are never disappointed. Bring a jacket. If you are prone to motion sickness take something for it in advance so you can enjoy the trip.

Photo of Brenda A.

The tour guide was very knowledgeable and entertaining. He showed a lot of enthusiasm as people asked questions about whales. We saw hunchback whales but none breached. Still a great experience!

Great day on the ocean! Take sea sick meds if you are prone to seasickness at all. Staff was very nice and we saw several whales and an amazing pod of dolphins all around the boat. Fun day!

Thank you so much for the wonderful review!

For my birthday, I wanted to go see some whales. Thanks to Monterey Bay Whale Watch, I was able to see over a dozen whales (mostly at a distance and at various intervals). But! I also got to see a spectacular views of Monterey Bay and Carmel Bay. Plus! A unique predation event (a sea lion hunting/eating a ray). Plus! A nursery pod of dolphins which was also a first for one of our naturalist guides on board. In late January, we lucked out with an unusually warm and clear day with no clouds and calm waters. Originally, I had booked tickets for a boat with access to an observation deck but was notified the day before that the 2-deck boat was not available. I was automatically refunded the price difference that I had paid for the premium top deck access. The boat ended up being fantastic and clean with plenty of seating both inside and outside. There was plenty of space to move around and take in all the views. The guides were super helpful in directing attention to where the ocean life was. In addition, their professionalism and safety made it possible for me to just relax and enjoy the water. I would definitely sail with Monterey Bay Whale Watch again.

Thank you so much for your wonderful review! We are so happy you enjoyed your birthday trip!

The best whale watching team ever!! The crew is amazing and so knowledgeable, and they work with the California killer whale project for identification and research! We had the privilege of starting out the killer whale season with over 30 whales hunting and celebrating a minke whale predation, Couldn't have asked for a better experience! 10 out of 10 cant wait to do it again!

Thank you so much for the amazing review!

Such a great crew! Such a great trip! Astounding that there were 29 gray whales to see (and some bonus otters) during the morning launch on 01/12/2024! These folks are pros at looking for whales. And once a whale is found, aligning the boat so everyone can see them! Definitely got our money's worth with the opportunities, pictures, and education! This is company to use when booking your whale watching adventure!

No walk-ins allowed: What to know when touring the world's best wine regions

By ,cnbc • published may 16, 2024 • updated on may 16, 2024 at 5:24 pm.

Gone are the days when wine tasting was confined to local wineries or national borders.

Today's consumers crave authentic wine experiences in the land where it's cultivated.

In Europe, where the wine economy is predominantly export-driven, tasting rooms tend to be family-operated. That means there may be just one person serving visitors, and appointments are often hard to schedule.

The United States, Australia and South Africa take a more open-door approach, with wineries built to accommodate tourism and walk-in visitors.

Get a weekly recap of the latest San Francisco Bay Area housing news. Sign up for NBC Bay Area’s Housing Deconstructed newsletter.

No matter where your wine travels lead you, consider these questions before heading out:

  • What kind of wine do you like?
  • What type of experience are you interested in?
  • Do you need to make an appointment?
  • Will there be food on-site?
  • How will you get there?

Stock futures tick higher after Dow closes above 40,000 for the first time: Live updates

Of France's 11 wine regions, Bordeaux, Burgundy (or Bourgogne) and Champagne are the most eminent.

Bordeaux is known for lush reds such as cabernet sauvignon, while Burgundy champions pinot noir and chardonnay wines. Champagne produces sparkling wines made from chardonnay, pinot noir, and pinot meunier grapes.

While in Bordeaux, visitors can stop at the Cité du Vin wine museum, explore elegant chateaux and dine in Michelin-star restaurants. Bordeaux is the only city in Europe with wineries within the city walls. Some are accessible via bike or tram.

monterey bay wine tours

Burgundy is home to spectacular landscapes covered by vineyards and dotted with centuries-old chateaux. An area of its vineyards, called The Climats, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

The region of Champagne is worth a visit and not only for the bubbles. Wine tours at some of the older producers may include a view of the ancient underground cellars used to escape the German soldiers during World War I.

Montagne de Reims, one of the five sub-regions of the Champagne wine region.

Most in-demand French tasting experiences must be booked in advance. Also, hours of operation vary from region to region.

Travelers should consider hiring a driver in Burgundy and Champagne. Alternatively, river cruises, like those on the Rhône, are an excellent way to see these magnificent wine regions.

Tuscany, one of the oldest wine regions in Italy, is a beautiful region of rolling hills, cypress trees, olive orchards and vineyards.

Chianti classico is the main attraction in Tuscany, but Montalcino's brunello is a huge draw for aficionados. Though both are made from Sangiovese grapes, the flavor profiles are quite different.

The vineyards of the Chianti wine region in Tuscany, Italy.

Wine festivals are an easy way to enjoy regional wine in Italy. In Tuscany, the village of Greve hosts the Chianti Classico Wine Festival in mid-September. Also in the fall, the town of Alba in Piedmont hosts a wildly popular wine and truffle festival. Parking can be tough, so visitors can consider carpooling or traveling via taxi.

Hired drivers are recommended in Tuscany; the area is mountainous with lots of curves and narrow roads. Similar to France, visitors should book appointments in advance.

Wine touring in the New World

Wine tourism in the New World is casual and easy. Appointments are rarely needed, and most tasting rooms are open seven days a week.

The United States

California is renowned for wine tasting, though almost every state in the continental U.S. has a wine region or wine tourism area.

Napa Valley, known for its bold cabernet sauvignon, is the premier wine region in the United States. Visitors can drive between vineyards, bike the Napa Valley Wine Trail, or book a ride on the vintage Napa Valley Wine Train.

Visitors tasting wine at Napa Valley's Freemark Abbey winery.

Sonoma is a vast region with rolling hills and 50 miles of rugged coastline – best known for pinot noir and chardonnay, plus some zinfandel in the warmer appellations. Tasting rooms are spread out, so more time is needed to explore it.

The best way to visit both regions is to book a driver, ideally one with contacts at the wineries. While it used to be the norm to book in advance, many visitors now walk in for a tasting. However, appointments are still preferred.

Other states with bustling wine tourism include Texas, Washington, Oregon, Virginia and New York.

Wine tourism in the land "Down Under" is cutting-edge.

Most of the wineries and tasting rooms are referred to as cellar doors. A few regions to consider are Yarra Valley in Victoria; Barossa Valley near Adelaide, and Margaret River about two hours south of Perth.

monterey bay wine tours

Wine tourism in Yarra Valley is convenient, with cellar doors open daily and wineries less than a mile apart. On-site dining and even accommodations are very common, making this area easy to visit.

Many large producers host concerts and outdoor events, that showcase the region's chardonnay, pinot noir and some sparkling wines.

A renowned wine touring region that welcomes kids

Margaret River offers great surfing as well as wine tasting. Visitors can look for unoaked chardonnay and Bordeaux blends. Its winding roads are known for frequent kangaroo crossings, and drivers are recommended.

Barossa is one of the older wine regions in Australia, with some 200 cellar doors within two hours of Adelaide. Here, wine tasting can come with koala and kangaroo sightings. Many grape varietals are grown in the valley – including grenache and riesling - ensuring there's something for most palates.

South Africa

South Africa may be considered a new world wine region, but Constantia, a top destination for wine tasting, is centuries old.

Opened in 1685, Groot Constantia is South Africa's first wine farm. It sits among other vineyards that make up the Constantia Wine Route , a 20-minute drive from Cape Town.

A sightseeing wine tour bus passes a vineyard in the Constantia wine region of South Africa.

Stellenbosch is a popular region with an established, and bikeable, wine route. The area has world-class restaurants too.

Specific wineries can be booked in advance, but most are open daily. The country's top varietals include chenin blanc, sauvignon blanc, pinotage and shiraz, showcasing the diversity of South African wines.
