BUENOS AIRES

Puerto madero, la boca, san telmo, luján, colonia and more, like the tango, ba is captivating, seductive, and bustling with excited energy..

Argentina, the eighth-largest country in the world, is home to many historical sites and is undoubtedly teeming with culture. On our 6-day Buenos Aires Photo Tour and Cultural Adventure, we get to experience a passionate and dynamic city that’s always on the move. It is the capital and largest city in Argentina, and where we will be spending most of our time exploring the many “barrios” (aka neighborhoods), which are unique in their own ways. Known for its European-style architecture, Buenos Aires offers plenty of opportunities to photograph its intricate, beautiful buildings and landmarks. Between the architecture, local markets, the fascinating Recoleta Cemetery, a colorful barrio of La Boca, there is no doubt Buenos Aires will prove to be an incredible site to take exceptional photos.

Just an hour’s ferry ride from Buenos Aires is one of the oldest towns in South America—Colonia del Sacramento in Uruguay. A day trip to this historic village, where you will not want to stop taking photos for a second, will take you back in time.

The small town of Luján will be an off-the-beaten-path day trip just outside of Buenos Aires—an experience you will never forget. The zoo in the town, which seems to be more like a nature conservancy, offers the opportunity for us to take pictures with the animals. We’re talking tigers, lions, elephants, lion cubs, etc. You will be able to feed the animals, hold baby lion cubs, and get up close and personal to these animals.

This adventure is designed not only to guide you to the most photogenic locations carefully planned for the best light but to aid you in mentally visualizing a scene before capturing the decisive moment. Our aim is to raise your awareness and spark your creativity so that you not only go home with images to be proud of but use your newfound skills to improve and expand your photographic technique in general. Apart from the technical aspect of learning your camera settings and capabilities, you will learn how to turn an ordinary image into an extraordinary image by using your own creativity.

In addition, you will become knowledgeable on how to survey the landscape, utilize and approach your environment, photograph people indigenous to the region and the cultural considerations and challenges of photographing in a foreign country. Our time together will include individual and group discussions, inspiring ideas, and great fun. What better place to express your creativity than beautiful Buenos Aires.

UPCOMING WORKSHOPS

Buenos aires 6 days, day 1 | buenos aires - puerto madero.

Welcome to BA! We meet at our hotel in the morning and begin by discussing PWA’s “10 Guiding Principles to Great Photography” as well as our “THE ART OF SEEING” photographic technique. At lunch, we’ll have informal discussions on what our guests are trying to achieve in their photography, subject matters, styles, and techniques. After lunch, we begin our photo walk and explore Puerto Madero. With its tall, modern buildings, this area along the river holds the Puente de la Mujer bridge.

The day concludes with a Welcome Dinner at one of our favorite Argentine restaurants. (D)

Day 2 | La Boca - San Telmo

On day two, we depart the hotel to explore the famous area of La Boca, full of colorful houses and tango dancers around every corner. We’ll also spend time exploring San Telmo, where we’ll find charming, narrow streets and sites such as the Plaza de Mayo, Casa Rosada (aka the Pink Palace), San Telmo Market and the Palace of San Telmo before stopping for lunch at a local restaurant.

Our afternoon will start off by walking along the widest avenue in the world, the Avenida 9 de Julio, where the famous landmark of Buenos Aires, the Obelisk, stands. We’ll continue on back towards the hotel through the pedestrian shopping streets of the town, perfect for people watching and admiring the culture and urban parks nearby. (B)

Day 3 | Colonia del Sacramento (Uruguay)

Just an easy one-hour ferry ride from Buenos Aires, this day will be spent on the other side of the Rio de la Plata in Colonia del Sacramento, Uruguay (don’t forget your passports). One of South America’s oldest towns, Colonia offers incredible history in this quaint cobblestoned town along the water. This UNESCO World Heritage site is home to the oldest street in Uruguay, as well as its oldest church, dating back to 1695.

We’ll stroll around this walkable town seeing different sites and colonial buildings, and can even climb to the top of the lighthouse for incredible views of the town. We will enjoy lunch at a traditional Uruguayan restaurant before continuing our stroll through the town and taking the ferry back to Recoleta for the remainder of the evening. (B)

Day 4 | Luján Zoo and Town Center

Today will consist of a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for most. Just an hour outside of the city is the Luján Zoo*, where the animals are very loosely confined, which gives visitors the chance to hold, pet, and feed the animals. Amongst these animals are tigers, elephants, lions, lion cubs, etc. The zoo is more of a large park where the animals, rather than being contained in small areas, are wandering around in a large fenced area where visitors can get up close and personal with the animals.

Not far from the zoo is the small town center of Luján. We’ll see the intricate architecture of this square, with the beautiful Basilica de Nuestra Señora de Lujan at its end. After we head back to the hotel, you may want to choose to have dinner in one of the nearby barrios, such as Palermo Soho, which is known for its restaurants and nightlife. (B)

*This is a must-do if anyone is even remotely interested in wildlife; the spectacular opportunity to photograph animals up close and take photos with the animals.

Day 5 | Recoleta - Palermo Soho - Palermo Hollywood

On day five we set out to explore the sights and take in the culture of the barrio of Recoleta. Our main focus, the Recoleta Cemetery, is a sight to see. There will be lots of time spent photographing the beautiful gravestones, and we will see the famous grave of Evita before strolling through the streets of Recoleta and the nearby parks before lunch.

For lunch, we will set out to Palermo Soho, home to tons of restaurants, bars, boutiques, and coffee shops. After taking in the culture of Palermo Soho, we will admire the old, Spanish-style architecture that is present in the adjacent town of Palermo Hollywood (aka Palermo Viejo). In the evening we celebrate with our Farewell Dinner and discuss the week’s events and amazing photo opportunities. (B) (D)

Day 6 | Buenos Aires

On our last morning, we will enjoy breakfast while reviewing our past week’s photos, trade contact information and bid you farewell before parting ways.

We encourage you to extend your stay in Argentina and make good use of everything you will learn on our photo adventure. (B)

(B) Breakfast, (L) Lunch, (D) Dinner, (E) Excursion

See the city from another angle with Foto Ruta Street Tours

By Holly Stanley

Perhaps you’ve just arrived in Buenos Aires and this will be your first introduction to seeing the city or maybe you’ve been here for a while and you just want to see an unfamiliar barrio in a different light. Foto Ruta combines walking tour with photography lesson and invaluable local knowledge that will undoubtedly help you make the most of your stay in Buenos aires.

Buenos Aires really is as photogenic as a city can be, each barrio has its own unique charm and selling point.

A photographer’s dream of beautiful architecture, leafy boulevards and gritty street art along with some charismatic Porteños make Buenos Aires ideal for those who are pro or novice alike.

Before the Foto Ruta tour…

The tour kicked off with a meeting in a kitsch cafe in Villa Crespo called Malvon , the barrio known as the un-gentrified Palermo, which lies just to the west of Soho. Our guide Palu, an Argentine born photographer gave us a quick intro of the basics of photography and some handy tips on lighting.

photography tour buenos aires

The tour is clearly made accessible to all, some members of the group were happy to shoot on an Iphone and others had more of a DSLR type lens. This made for an informal relaxed atmosphere which felt like a local introducing us to their favourite parts of the city whilst giving us some kind encouragement and useful tips with our photos.

Villa Crespo neighbourhood

I have always been someone who has enjoyed snapping away whenever I arrive in a new city.  I am happiest wandering somewhat aimlessly, camera in hand searching for my next photo. You are able to do just this with Foto Ruta except this time you won’t get lost and you’ll definitely find the best spots for photos.

What I loved about Foto Ruta is that they encourage you to see Buenos Aires from a different angle it encourages you to look a little more closely beyond the obvious beauty and search for something a little more hidden. It’s about capturing the beauty of the everyday, the real life of the city.

photography tour buenos aires

Palu clearly has passion for photography and was a patient guide, she gave us lots of handy hints along the way and made sure that we were making the most of each pit stop.  I would have never spotted many of the hidden nooks and crannies had I been alone, as my novice knowledge of the city just doesn’t stretch that far yet.  I was pleased to realise that Villa Crespo is an absolute gold mine of street photography options from fruit shops to leafy cobbled streets and striking street art.  We were encouraged to be experimental and abstract. To take photos at odd angles, or with props or through windows. This made for some interesting perspectives on Villa Crespo.

After the Tour…

The walking section of the tour takes roughly 3 hours, after that you are treated to a vino or coffee of whatever you fancy in a cafe. This gives the group and the guide a chance to review your favourite photos of the day and articulate why you like them (or not!). Palu then gave us a few suggestions of how to tweak and optimise each photo through editing software.

Foto Ruta is a fab way of familiarising yourself with some of Buenos Aires more hidden gems whilst picking up a solid photography technique along the way. For those of you who are creatively minded and love a long walk Foto Ruta is a great tour to do.

I took the Off the Beaten Path (Villa Crespo) tour that was very easy to get to from Vamos Spanish Academy, you can take the subte line D from Bulnes to Palermo and the 166 colectivo.

I took a four-week course at Vamos and was delighted with the experience. The course is conversation-intensive, which was incredibly useful given that speaking tends to be the most difficult skill.

Vamos Spanish Academy offers an outstanding educational experience. I spent a total of 12 exceptional weeks at the school.

I can also recommend highly the home stay feature of the course. I stayed with an Argentinian in the next suburb who only spoke Spanish, but who was very patient with me as I improved.

My Spanish improves by the hour! The staff and academic director do everything in their power to make your stay as comfortable as possible.

  • ClaireWilson36 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles Our Second Tour with Bernardo Galmarini In 2018, we were fortunate to meet and spend a day photographing with Bernardo Galmarini. This man is a top-flight photographer in all ways. Now in January of 2020, we were again fortunate to book a day with Bernardo. There were 3 of us--myself and 2 friends who are experienced professional photographers. Bernardo took us to some of the main city sights that are conducive to photo ops, such as Recoleta Cemetery, La Boca, San Telmo and Plaza de Mayo. He guided us to situations with great opportunities for good photos. My photos from 2018 turned out beautifully, and I expect the newest photos to be the same (when we get home and can download them). Bernardo's skill, experience, and personality are a strong combination for providing great learning opportunities at whatever level of photography you are. I need a lot of help, whereas my partner and friend do not need technical support. Bernardo is good at "reading" what is needed in one's photography. For instance, I have no experience with twilight/night-time shooting. Bernardo had me taking excellent photos in a short time as we watched the sun go down and took photos from various vantage points in Plaza de Mayo. We would recommend Bernardo absolutely. Every Time Travis Kelce Caught Taylor Swift on the Eras Tour (So Far!)

The football star has popped up at a handful of Eras Tour stops in the past year, trading bracelets and charming fans along the way

Travis Kelce continues to be in his Taylor Swift era.

The football star has now seen his girlfriend on her worldwide Eras Tour six times — which makes sense, given that she made it to 13 of his Kansas City Chiefs games this past season (including the team's Super Bowl win! ).

Despite the couple's wildly busy schedules, they've both found time to be at each other's sides for important moments.

"Hopefully, everybody realizes we’re just two people supporting each other and having fun with it, man," Kelce shared on a January 2024 episode of The Pat McAfee Show .

Here, see all the times Kelce has hit the road to watch Swift's Eras tour — so far.

Kansas City, Missouri

The pair's love story started back in July of 2023, when Kelce attended Swift's tour stop on his home field, the Chiefs' Arrowhead Stadium in Kansas City.

Weeks later, the tight end revealed on his New Heights podcast that he'd made Swift a friendship bracelet with his phone number on it, but didn't get the chance to give it to her.

"I was disappointed that she doesn’t talk before or after her shows because she has to save her voice for the 44 songs that she sings," he said on the show, playfully adding that he "took it personal" when he couldn't meet her backstage.

Let's fast-forward to several tour stops later, when Kelce jetted down to Argentina on his November 2023 bye week to watch Swift in Buenos Aires during the South America leg of her tour. It's where fans caught a sweet video of Swift running into Kelce's arms for a kiss following the show, after he bonded with her dad Scott in their VIP box.

The night prior to the concert, the couple had a cozy dinner inside their hotel.

A source told PEOPLE that the two "looked so cute on their low-key date night" and that "they also left holding hands." The source added that "the crowd in the restaurant briefly cheered as they walked out" and that "Travis was beaming.”

Sydney, Australia

Following the Chiefs' Super Bowl win — and Swift's epic travel from Tokyo to make it to Las Vegas to watch Kelce play — the footballer traveled to Australia , where he caught his third Eras Tour concert in a suite alongside celebrities including director Baz Luhrmann in February of 2024.

Once again, fans spotted him backstage for a post-concert kiss with Swift, and during their downtime, the couple visited the Sydney Zoo alongside Swift's opener, Sabrina Carpenter.

He opened up about the experience to brother Jason Kelce on New Heights, saying in part, "Saw a tiger sitting up in a treehouse. That s--- was f---ing sweet, ain’t gonna lie. Saw a lion close up. Dude, when you hear that [roar] — ‘cause I had Taylor take a picture — it just was like, ‘Oh my gosh.’ ”

Kelce revealed he saw "two amazing shows" when he joined Swift for part of her six-night stint in Singapore in March of 2024. Unlike his previous concert moments, he flew under the radar at these two, though fans did spot the couple walking through a mall during their time together there.

“The architecture's crazy," Kelce told his brother on New Heights, adding that despite the heat, he enjoyed seeing "the world's largest greenhouse" in addition to checking out the gorgeous views and "some lovely Singapore food."

Paris, France

David Eulitt/Getty, Kevin Mazur/TAS24/Getty

When Swift picked her tour back up in Paris in May of 2024, Kelce was there , joining Gigi Hadid and Bradley Cooper in a box at La Défense Arena to see the 87th Eras show — a.k.a. the one that aligns with his jersey number.

Kelce sang along to Swift's new songs from her Tortured Poets Department album — specifically the ones about him! — danced, snapped videos and debriefed about it with brother Jason on New Heights.

"I don't know if they're just getting better or if I just keep forgetting how they are," Kelce said when asked how Paris compared to the previous shows he'd seen.

“I'll tell you what. Kansas City showed out,” he gushed . “Argentina was unbelievable. Australia, they partied with the best of them, and they celebrated with the best of them. Those three were unbelievable. Singapore was so unique and so fun. And then Paris was just — it was on a whole another level, man.”

See Behind-The-Scenes Video From MEGADETH's First 2024 Concert In Buenos Aires, Argentina

Professor Reggie Almeida of the Renzo Gracie TN Brazilian jiu-jitsu school in Tennessee, who has been traveling with MEGADETH on the band's recent tours, has uploaded backstage and performance video of the Dave Mustaine -fronted outfit's sold-out May 13 concert at the 15,000-capacity Movistar Arena in Buenos Aires, Argentina. Check out the clips below.

After the first concert at Movistar Arena sold out in a matter of minutes, the band added another date at the same venue for April 14. That concert sold out in two hours, according to concert promoter Ake Music Productions . MEGADETH later announced that it would play a third show at Movistar Arena on April 16.

MEGADETH 's concerts in Argentina took place 30 years after the band's first appearance in the country, which was held on December 2, 1994 at the Obras Sanitarias stadium. It was at that gig that the chant "Aguante Megadeth" was started during the song "Symphony Of Destruction" , loosely translating to " MEGADETH rocks".

Earlier this month, MEGADETH appeared on Pollstar 's Live75 chart, which tracks active tours by the average tickets sold for shows that happened over the past 30 days.

According to Pollstar , five of the 12 MEGADETH concerts from the band's just-completed Latin American "Crush The World" tour moved a total of 73,372 sold tickets and grossed $4 million to enter the Live75 at No. 6. The shows include the April 9 performance at Movistar Arena in Santiago, Chile (14,828 tickets sold),the April 21-22 two-night stint at Bogotá, Colombia's Movistar Arena (21,074 sold tickets for a $1.4 million gross),the April 25 concert at Arena CDMX in Mexico City, Mexico (18,706 tickets sold) and the April 27 show at Arena Monterrey in Monterrey, Mexico (18,764 tickets sold).

The day before the final show of MEGADETH 's Latin American tour, which took place on April 30 in San Salvador, El Salvador, the band's leader Dave Mustaine took to his social media to write: "We have had the most righteous time down here in Latin America. The fans have been insanely loud. Every city has had a different set list, and we've practiced our fingers off on this tour! We hope that the fans got to hear their favorite songs, as well as some deeper tracks that we haven't play for some time.

"Fast forward to today. I was looking down at some papers on the hotel suite desk. and noticed something different about the rooming list. It stated that we are going home from here and I always feel melancholy when we do.

"The four of us have become such good friends, and we are all thriving together in MEGADETH . If I may elaborate...

" Dirk [ Verbeuren ] is an amazing drummer, and I often wonder how I got so fortunate to play with him (he is a lot like [late MEGADETH drummer] Gar [ Samuelson ]),he is a wonderful, humble man who I've learned a lot from.

" James [ LoMenzo , bass] has been our anchor and my mentor for singing out here. He is a killer bassist, who sings so confidently that I can easily accept direction and criticism from him. He has learned every song we play live, note for note, and I love seeing him every morning out here.

"I can't say enough about Teemu [ Mäntysaari , guitar], and I don't have to, because you have no doubt seen footage of us together. He is a mad scientist on guitar, he plays ALL previous guitarists parts effortlessly with finesse, and the utmost respect for his predecessor.

"The four of us play, and go over songs every day, reviewing, perfecting, and building up our repertoire to play for you. By the time we reach Europe this summer, we will have even more songs added, to provide the variety to our playlists of songs played in concert.

"Well, that's it for now. I have to get some rest for my body. Tomorrow we are going to take back the night in San Salvador! Mother Nature tried stopping us last time, with insane wind and sideways torrential rain, but the sun is out and we're back!

"Hasta mañana chicos!"

MEGADETH recently announced a North American tour "Destroy All Enemies" , produced by Live Nation . Support on the 33-city trek, which includes stops in Los Angeles, Las Vegas, Boston and St. Louis, will come from MUDVAYNE and ALL THAT REMAINS . The tour begins in Rogers, Arkansas on August 2 and runs throughout the month before wrapping in Nashville, Tennessee on September 28.

Finnish guitarist Mäntysaari joined MEGADETH last September after the band's longtime axeman Kiko Loureiro , announced earlier that month that he would sit out the next leg of MEGADETH 's "Crush The World" tour in order to stay home with his children back in Finland. It was later revealed that Mäntysaari would continue to play guitar for MEGADETH for the foreseeable future, with Loureiro seemingly having no plans to return.

The 37-year-old Mäntysaari was born in Tampere, Finland and began playing guitar at the age of 12. In 2004, he joined the band WINTERSUN . He has also been a member of SMACKBOUND since 2015.

MEGADETH played its first concert with Mäntysaari on September 6, 2023 at Revel in Albuquerque, New Mexico.

Loureiro officially joined MEGADETH in April 2015, about five months after Chris Broderick 's exit from the group.

Since its inception in 1983, MEGADETH has ascended from its raw thrash metal roots to become an unstoppable force in the heavy metal world. With founder Dave Mustaine at the helm, MEGADETH 's journey has been marked by a penchant for pushing the boundaries of speed, technicality, and complexity in their music. Their groundbreaking album "Rust In Peace" , released in 1990, is frequently cited as a seminal work in the thrash metal genre. Along with the critically acclaimed "Peace Sells... But Who's Buying?" , it cemented MEGADETH 's place in the annals of metal history.

Over four decades, the band's discography has earned numerous certifications, including platinum and multi-platinum awards, with albums like "Countdown To Extinction" and "Youthanasia" achieving widespread critical acclaim. 2016's "Dystopia" not only marked a high point with their first Grammy Award for "Best Metal Performance" after twelve nominations but also set the stage for their latest triumph, "The Sick, The Dying... And The Dead!" in 2022. MEGADETH 's status as part of the "Big Four" of thrash metal underscores their trailblazing role in the genre, laying the groundwork for countless bands and musicians who have followed in their wake.

MEGADETH Jiu-Jitsu Trainer REGGIE ALMEIDA Shares Live Highlights From Crush The World 2024 Tour Buenos Aires Show

Professor Reggie Almeida of the Gracie Barra Brazilian jiu-jitsu school in Spring Hill, TN acts as trainer for Megadeth's Dave Mustaine and co. while on the road. He was back on the road with the band in April and has shared live highlights, via his ChokeRoll YouTube channel, from the April 13th show in Buenos Aires, Argentina at Movistar Arena.

In a new interview with Rocking.gr , Megadeth leader Dave Mustaine discusses his special connection with Greece, why the band is more solid than ever with new guitarist Teemu Maynsaari, and what’s the status with Kiko Loureiro now. An excerpt from the chat follows...

Rocking.gr: Have you started thinking about writing new songs, making a new album, maybe? Or is it too soon? Maybe to see what you and Teemu could do together in the studio? And also, are you still eager to compose new music or do you prefer to play live shows with all this classic and great songs that you already have in your catalogue?

Dave Mustaine: "I was eager to start doing new songs when I left the studio last time in 2022. We had songs that weren't finished, but we needed to get ready for the record release and to go back out on tour. So, I hope that answers your question. I just was talking with the guys about getting ready to start submitting ideas for what we're doing next.

Rocking.gr: Yeah, it answers my question. So, next year it will be 40 years since the release of your debut album. Do you have any special plans to celebrate this milestone? Not just for "Killing Is My Business..." album, for its sake, but in general to celebrate 40 years of your discography?

Mustaine: "I didn't think about that. I'm always looking for a reason to have a good time, so that is a great idea to have a party for that. You know, while we tour, when we have anniversaries, the 40th one is hard to have anything that comes close to that. 35 is coming up, 30 is coming up, and at some point 30 and 40 are going to land on the same year, 35 and 25 going to land on the same year kind of stuff. And eventually there's going to be an anniversary every year of one or more albums. I would love to do an anniversary record and tour to support those records. But at this point right now, we're just wrapping up the Crush The World Tour and we're getting ready to come back home. And when we get home is when we're going to start working on new songs, because be we'll be working out of the United States and it'll be a lot easier for us to go from city to city and set up our dressing rooms, so that we can do work during the day in the venues."

If you go to a milonga, or social dance, to do tango dancing in Buenos Aires, you’ll likely be doing it to live music.

In western Massachusetts? No so much.

Now, though, Western Mass Tango , which has hosted tango lessons and dances in the region for years using recorded music, has scored something of a coup, booking two renowned Argentinian tango guitarists to play a June 2 dance/concert in Northampton.

Villarreal Crom, the duo of Juan Villarreal and Patricio “Pato” Crom, has been touring the world for years since first forming in Buenos Aires in 2010. The two have most recently played in Europe, and this weekend they’ve opened an extended tour in the U.S.

The two guitarists — Crom plays lead, and Villarreal plays rhythm and also sings — include many traditional tango songs in their repertoire, says Laura Grandi , who leads lessons and workshops for Western Mass Tango, which rehearses weekly at First Churches in Northampton.

But their guitar work is also “very much their own,” says Grandi, while conjuring the spirit and sensibility of tango in a way that can be hard to capture while dancing to recorded music.

“They are wonderful musicians … we’re very excited to bring them here,” she said during a recent dance class at First Churches.

“Tango has spread throughout the world, reaching every corner of the planet where two people are willing to immerse themselves in the mystery of the embrace,” the guitarists write on their website. “For us, the duo is a way of life.”

For arranging the June 2 gig, it helped that Grandi grew up in Buenos Aires herself and has studied tango since she was about 16. She says she got to know both Villarreal and Crom through tango circles in Buenos Aires and was able to use those connections to bring them to Northampton during their U.S. tour.

Henry Lappen, a longtime tango dancer and a board member of Western Mass Tango, says this will be the first time the group has brought live music to one of its events.

There are few tango musicians in the region, he says, and dancers who want to move to live music typically have to go to Boston or New York (or on occasion Hartford, Connecticut).

Lappen says he was actually a little uncertain at first about how effective two guitars could be in creating a strong backdrop for tango. Western Mass Tango members, for instance, have been dancing to recorded orchestral music, with strings, woodwinds and piano, some of it dating back to the mid 20th century.

“But then I watched a couple of videos of [Villarreal and Crom] and I said ‘These guys are incredible,’” he said.

In fact, says Grandi, the guitar was central to the early development of tango, which originated in the late 19th century, primarily in the border region of Argentina and Uruguay, before spreading to cities such as Buenos Aires.

The June 2 dance and concert, which takes place beginning at 2 p.m. at the Northampton Center for the Arts , will start with a “Musicality for Dancers” class, followed by about three-and-a-half hours of a music and dance; the music itself can be enjoyed by non-dancers, Lappen said.

‘She’s really revived us’

The live music event comes as Western Mass Tango has regrouped from the pandemic, which shut down any kind of dancing for months, and the loss of a couple of experienced teachers who left the area.

Lappen says some previous members of Western Mass Tango have not returned, quite possibly because of lingering concerns about COVID, especially given the close contact that’s central to the dance form.

But things began to pick up, Lappen says, after Grandi moved to the area in November 2022 and started leading weekly classes.

“Laura is a fantastic and really enthusiastic teacher who has really revived us,” said Lappen, who lives in Amherst.

Grandi has taught tango in many settings over the years. She moved to New York City earlier in 2022 before settling in Northampton in the fall. She now teaches tango at Smith College, and in Somerville and in Brattleboro, in addition to the Northampton classes.

She also offers private lessons and instruction in Pilates and other body conditioning, which she says has gained popularity among many modern tango dancers as a means to improve their performances.

She says she explored a number of dance styles when she was growing up in Buenos Aires before devoting herself to tango beginning in the late 1990s.

“Tango is a social dance,” said Grandi. “It is about communicating with your partner, not with words but with physical contact.”

In an age dominated by social media and cell phones, Grandi added, “This is a different way to connect … you are having a dialogue but without words.”

At a recent lesson at First Churches, about 20 people paired off to dance to recorded orchestral music, with Grandi at times demonstrating some steps and also circling the floor to watch the dancers and offer advice, or taking a turn with one of them; she radiated energy, with frequent smiles and laughs and encouragement.

“Yes, that’s good,” she said to one couple.

She and Lappen note that a number of tango styles have evolved over the years; Western Mass Tango practices Argentine Tango, which is based almost entirely on improvisation, with one dancer taking the lead and his or her partner, the follower, responding to those movements.

“You take your cues from the music and your partner,” said Lappen.

“We learn some basic steps and movements, but after that dancers develop their own movements,” said Grandi.

And though in traditional tango men are the lead dancers, in the Northampton sessions women can take on that role, and women will sometimes dance with women, and men with men.

One dancer, who gave just her first name, Maggie, said she’s been active in many styles of dance but has found tango to have almost “a spiritual quality” in its reliance on non-verbal communication.

“I came for the dance, and I stayed because you really have to listen” to each other’s bodies, she said.

Describing herself as an “ardent feminist,” Maggie also said she at first questioned tango’s history of having men always take the lead role in dancing. But the Northampton sessions under Grandi, she added, “are much more open. I like that. And Laura is a great teacher.”

Dias Baz and Lucinda Callie, who were visiting Northampton, popped into the lesson after seeing a small sign about it taped outside the church. They chatted with Grandi and did a little dancing before stepping to the side.

Both said they’d had a few experiences dancing tango in school when they were growing up but were otherwise not that familiar with it. But Baz, who lives in Somerville, was interested to hear about Grandi’s Sunday classes there and added the information to his cell phone.

And at the end of one part of the lesson, Lappen handed out flyers to everyone about the June 2 dance/concert. “Tell everyone you know, spread the word, and let’s have a big crowd for this,” he said.
