The Birth Of Trek Bicycles

Exploring the root of this renowned brand reveals a story that’s as captivating as the winding trails their bikes are designed to conquer. Let’s pedal through time to the remarkable inception of Trek Bicycles.

From A Barn To A Bike Empire

The year was 1976 , and in a humble red barn in Waterloo, Wisconsin, the first frame of a Trek bike came to life. What started with  five employees  in that barn went on to become a symbol of innovation and craftsmanship in the cycling world.

Trek’s founders aimed to construct high-quality, hand-crafted bicycles that could rival the best European imports. Using  steel tubing  and the most deliberate of designs,  each bike was a testament to detail . Attention to performance and durability quickly established Trek as a frontrunner for American-made bicycles.

The  initial Trek bicycle lineup consisted of steel touring frames , and it wasn’t long before these bikes hit the trails and the hearts of riders.

Growth was inevitable . From a barn-based workshop, Trek expanded, shifting to a larger factory to meet demand. The simple goal of producing quality bicycles propelled the brand into a renowned bike empire.

The Vision Of Bevil Hogg And Richard Burke

The masterminds behind Trek Bicycles, Bevil Hogg and Richard Burke, shared an unwavering passion for cycling and a clear vision. Focused on  revolutionizing bike manufacturing , they set their sights on building frames that rivaled the best globally.

Hogg and Burke  observed a gap in the market  for mid to high-end bicycles, particularly those made in America. This observation sparked the inspiration to start Trek Bicycle Corporation.

Hogg’s expertise in marketing and Burke’s financial acumen created a powerful synergy. Together,  they invested in the latest technology  to craft bicycles that  exuded quality  and  durability .

Their commitment to excellence was uncompromising, attracting a devoted following from both recreational cyclists and professionals.

As their bikes began to garner attention, Trek’s reputation soared. The company quickly evolved,  expanding its range from touring to racing bikes .

The HP series (28 mph max speed) provides maximum power, whereas the LT series (20 mph max) offers a good balance between power and weight. These bikes cost up to $12,500 , but they have the best groupsets you can find, the lightest and stiffest carbon, and the highest-end Bosch electronic parts.

Best for: Road riders with money to spare, who want the speed, weight, and performance of a standard road bike, coupled with electronics that will assist them along hilly sections.

Trek Electra Bikes

In 2014, Trek acquired the Electra Bicycle Company , which is now part of Trek’s brand. That is why you can see many Electra bikes on Trek’s official website.

The Electra brand offers a wide range of city, cruiser, and hybrid bikes built around aluminum or steel frames and intended for daily recreational and fitness riding.

Electra’s lineup also includes electric models (“Go!” in the model name) and numerous kids’ bikes with a wide range of wheel sizes. These are quality and affordable bicycles, even though they don’t have “Trek” written all over them.

Below is a full list of Electra model series available on Trek’s website:

  • Cafe Moto Go!

Trek's Women bikes

Trek advertises all of their bikes as unisex, although the smaller models are more suitable for women.

In previous years, Trek came out with two kinds of models, but pretty much all of the 2024 range is unisex.

The trick is, smaller models come with a curved top tube to make mounting the bike easier, but for bigger models, the top tube is straight.

Electra Kids Bikes 16″, 20″, 24″

Electra Kids Bikes

At the moment, Trek offers a wide range of kids’ bikes under the Electra brand. These bikes are available with 16″, 20″, and 24″ wheels, so they are suitable for different ages. Electra does not have any balance bikes, but there are many 16″ and 20′ models with training wheels. There are also single-speed and multi-gear models for younger and older kids. The best thing about them is fun and colorful designs!

Best for:  Kids and teenagers of all ages, for riding around the block, commutes to school, or family weekend rides on bike paths.

Kickster by Trek

Kickster is the only balance bike Trek offers. It costs around $160 and it comes with 12″ wheels, so it’s suitable for kids who are roughly 34″-40″ tall. It’s the best bike for very young riders to learn how to ride, practice balance, and progress on their own terms.

Best for:  Toddlers who need to learn how to maintain balance on two wheels.

Precaliber, Wahoo & Roscoe

Precaliber, Wahoo, Roscoe

Precaliber, Wahoo, and Roscoe are Kids’ MTB series with wider tires, rim or disc brakes, and rigid or suspended forks. Trek Roscoe is available only with 24″ wheels, whereas Precaliber and Wahoo can be bought with 16″, 20″, 24″, and even 26″ wheels. These kids’ bikes are excellent for both on and off-road riding , trips to school, family rides, and any other fun cycling activities.

Best for: Children of all ages who need versatile bikes that they can ride on paved and unpaved roads, as well as on bike paths.

Trek MT-201

The MT-201 pedal trailer can be attached to the parent’s bike in front and allows the child to tag along and practice balancing while pedaling. The saddle is fully adjustable and the trailer comes with a 20″ wheel that makes it suitable for children between 45″-52″ tall.

Best for:  Toddlers and preschoolers who still need to perfect their balancing skills but want to follow their parents anywhere they go.

new or used bike

That means that you can probably easily sell them when you decide to upgrade and get a decent part of your investment back. Of course, assuming the bike is still in good condition.

If you have the money to spare, we recommend going for a new Trek bike that you will be able to sell for a decent chunk of the original price in the future, if you decide to do so.

Whenever possible, new is always better. It’s true that you can buy a bike with better specs for the same amount of money if you look for used, but you should only do it if you have enough experience to determine whether the bike is in good shape.

Trek bikes sizing charts

One of the benefits of buying a Trek bicycle is that you can usually choose from a large number of sizes. Most Trek bikes are usually available in 6 to 7 sizes , but some series come in up to 8 sizes (Domane).

Trek also offers size-specific wheels on many of their MTB models, such as the Marlin series. That means that the smallest frame sizes come with 27.5″ wheels, whereas larger frame sizes are 29ers. This ensures the best possible fit for riders of all heights.

One big plus is that Trek also offers height and inseam-based bike size charts , which is something that many other brands avoid. Therefore, to find the right size, just compare your height and inseam to the chart provided for every single bike.

5 thoughts on “ trek bikes brand review: a close look at the iconic usa bike brand ”.

The Trek Powerfly 5 Review may be an extremely advanced electrical off-roader that comes with spectacular specs to deliver unmatched skillfulness.

It offers the sort of power you’ll have to be compelled to tackle difficult cross-country terrains, however still feels natural on a leisurely weekend cruise round the neighborhood!

I was interested in buying a used xcalibur 7 and it’s a woman’s model. I can’t find any differences in the mens and woman’s besides the seat and coil spring. Is the frame and everything else the same? Thanks

Hi Jack, Good question. Unlike other mountain bikes with the top tube curving down for women’s bikes, there is not much difference except the frame size and the things you mentioned perhaps?

What’s the difference sl series. I’m confused, can you please explain.

Hi Antonio, It’s just an acronym: AL: Aluminium. CF: Carbon Fibre. CF SL: Carbon Fibre Super Light. CF SLX: Carbon Fibre Super Light Extreme etc 😉

Review: Trek Carback bike radar makes big promises

The trek carback seems like a version of the garmin varia rtl515 with a bigger battery & updated details. unfortunately it’s not that simple..

At this point, the Garmin Varia radar system is well known. I’ve ridden with it for years and I never leave the house without it. It’s one of the few things that I can say with complete confidence makes a bike ride better.

The one problem with the Garmin Varia is that not every version is so good. The best model is the middle child Varia RTL515 and Garmin doesn’t seem all that interested in updating it. It originally hit the market in 2020 and it’s outdated. The RCT715 came out in 2022 and offers an updated mount, bigger battery, and USB-C charging that the 515 desperately needs except it also adds a camera and offers less run time for twice the price. Someone needs to save the day with a competing product.

Other brands have tried to create a competing Varia RTL515 but so far no one has quite done it. The Bryton Gardia R300L is a downright dangerous product that both misses cars and consistently identifies phantom cars. The Magicshine Seemee 508 Radar tail light is much better but it still can’t quite match the battery life or identification reliability of the Garmin.

Now there’s a new option from Trek and there’s no company in a better position to make an amazing Garmin Varia competitor. Unfortunately, the Trek Carback isn’t quite the easy recommendation I want it to be. The detection is solid but there are some details that require consideration. If you are looking to finally add radar to your riding, or you are wondering if there’s a credible alternative to Garmin radar, keep reading to see if Trek has a light that’s right for you.

Trek Carback VS Garmin RTL515

Quick hits: eight things to know about the Trek Carback bike radar

  • Claimed battery life is 7-hours but real world is closer to 9.5-hours
  • The light portion is identical to the Bontrager Flare RT
  • USB-C charging
  • ANT+ and Bluetooth dual capable
  • Functionally identical, minus battery life, to the Garmin Varia RTL515
  • 2000mAh battery
  • IPX7 waterproof rating
  • Uses the same Trek Blendr mount as the Flare RT

Trek Carback details

Throughout this review you might sense a note of disappointment. It’s definitely how I feel about the Trek Carback and it’s because no company is better positioned to beat Garmin at light design quite like Trek. I’d even go so far as to say that Trek beat Garmin once before and the Varia uses a Trek design.

To understand what I mean, we have to go back to 2018. That’s when Bontrager (the slowly disappearing Trek component brand) brought the Flare RT to market. That light was a pairing with the Ion 200 RT and both lights are tiny with the rear only hitting 40 grams on a scale. The trick was that despite the tiny size, there was still a sizable 12-hour battery and even more than the battery and size, there was an innovative lens and flash pattern.

Bontrager pushed the concept that everyone should be riding with rear lights even in the day. The factory race team was doing promotions about riding with the lights and there was even cross promotion with Zwift. It was successful and Trek shifted the consumer mindset. The lights were also really good and they still hold up today .

The lens uses a fresnel design that makes it way brighter than you expect and instead of a basic on and off flash the Flare RT uses an irregular pattern. Trek did a sizable amount of research at the time showing how effective it was even in bright light and the brand was right. I personally experienced my wife driving past me through the high-desert of eastern Oregon in the midday sun. She told me at the time how much better it made her feel to know that she could see that tiny light well before she could make me out.

Then the RTL515 came to market. It had a similar Fresnel lens and a similar irregular flash but it added Varia radar. Not only could cars see you in midday sun but now you could see them without looking or listening. You could see how fast they were coming and how many were there without ever looking up. The Flare RT is a great light but the Garmin Varia takes what makes it great and adds radar.

In the years that followed, it always made sense for Trek to take a Flare RT and add Varia radar to it. For a while the problem was that it would have been hard to differentiate the two. Time passes though, years later the Trek Carback finally does exactly that.

The new Trek CarBack is a mashup of the Flare RT and the Varia with a few updates and added tricks. As with the Flare RT, there’s a big emphasis on staying visible with a quoted 2km day time visibility using the same lens and flash pattern. The IPX7 waterproof rating stays the same but the charging gets an update to USB-C. On the light side, everything great about the Flare RT is still there.

Then below that there’s radar. Trek claims that shifting to 77Ghz radar, versus 24Ghz for Varia, extends vehicle detection up to 240 meters. That’s a 100 meter advantage over Garmin Varia and the two otherwise work the same. Like Garmin options it can connect to an app via Bluetooth or any modern bike computer with ANT+. Once turned on it will “see” multiple cars at a time and as long as there’s a speed differential you’ll get notifications on your headunit of choice.

To support both the light and radar, there’s a new 2,000 mAh battery. There’s also a gauge on the side that shows available power when turned on or at the push of the power button. Quoted run time is 7-hours in daytime flash mode.

In terms of mounting, the Trek Carback is again a copy and paste of the Flare RT. In the box you get a rubber strap with a Blendr mount. If you have a Trek Saddle with a Blendr mount that’s an ideal way to mount the light without the strap. Alternatively you can find a round seat post hard mount for blendr and I think you might be able to get crafty with a GoPro style saddle rail mount and the “High Ion Light Mount for Blendr.”

Ride experience

The problem with all of this is that the ride experience doesn’t match up with the marketing promises. Right away I faced a challenge with mounting. I’d promised to bring a light for a friend and we were both going to try out the Trek Carback. Then the morning of the ride I mounted the Carback on my bike and noticed the plastic clasp touched the seatpost. I decided to slap a piece of helicopter tape on my seatpost but I didn’t want to risk marring a friend’s bike so he could help me test a light for a day. I brought him my Varia instead.

The inside of the Trek Blendr mount

For what it’s worth, Trek told me that the testing the brand did never showed scratches from the mount. Trek also reminded me that the mount was the same as the one the Flare RT uses. I can’t say if Trek is right or not, I was never willing to test it out. It is true that the Flare RT uses the same mount but that light is half the weight and far smaller. If you want to risk it, go ahead but I recommend a bit of helicopter tape or a different mounting system just in case. No one likes the standard RTL515 mounting but, at least considering what’s in the box, Trek seems to have made something worse. There’s still no lanyard for extra security either.

That morning was a blessing though. If I’d thought about it, I’d have suggested the two different lights from the beginning as that way I got to test them together. As both of us rode with our computers beeping, car detection was obvious. Despite the claim of a vastly longer detection range, only once did my computer beep first and it was only barely ahead of the Garmin. I wouldn’t consider that a bad thing other than the marketing claim.

Trek Carback power button

I find Garmin Varia so accurate that after years of using it, I often don’t double check the lane before moving. I look at my computer and see if there’s a car there. The Trek Carback performed just as well. It never missed a car and it never had a phantom detection. It was as perfect as a mirror.

Ignore the claim, again, and that might be fine except for the battery life. Trek uses a less power efficient system for early detection. Except there is no early detection in real life so you just get the same performance with less burn time.

Still, the burn time isn’t bad. On a mixed surface ride it took me right around 7 hours of elapsed time to get to 88 miles where I saw the first low battery warning on my head unit. At roughly 9 hours and 113 miles I got the critical battery notice. I rode 125 miles that day and the light died about 5 miles before home or about 25 minutes after the critical low battery warning.

Trek Carback battery gauge

I said from the beginning I’ve got some disappointment about the Trek Carback but is it warranted? In reality Trek is offering a USB-C radar equipped light with a decent range of mounting options. The quoted run time is decent and I was able to squeeze 2.5 hours extra out of it. The radar doesn’t detect at 240 meters but it’s completely accurate and the light is one of the best on the market.

If this was being sold in a vacuum I’d be telling you it’s great. It’s definitely better than the Magicshine or Bryton options. Unfortunately for Trek there is already a Garmin RTL515 available.

USB-C charging on the Trek Carback

For the same price, or less right now, you get everything Trek is offering plus more. You do have to give up USB-C charging and that is increasingly a hassle. The exchange is equitable though. Rescue an old cord from your box of cords and you get a change in flash pattern when Garmin detects a car. You also get Smart Mode capability on Garmin and third generation Hammerhead computers . That’s a feature that means you never have to turn the light on or off and it will just start your preferred mode when you press start. Most importantly though, you get massive burn time in comparison.

The Garmin RTL515 will do 16 hours on daytime flash. I’ve even had it last more than 24-hours by leaving the radar on but turning off the flash during the day. I realize most people don’t need that but it’s there for free. The Trek Carback only matches the performance of Garmin with no meaningful advantage to offer for giving up the extra battery life and convenience features.

Unless you care deeply about the cable you use to charge your bike light, or the visible battery gauge, I find it hard to recommend the Trek Carback. It’s a great light but it doesn’t match the features that Garmin offers and it’s the same price.

You are here, trek bicycle plans to ‘right size’ with 10% cuts to spending.

BOULDER, Colo. (BRAIN) — Trek Bicycle president John Burke has told company leaders that he has decided to “right size” the company by 10% in response to slow sales and high inventory levels. But he says the company's overall strategy remains unchanged.

In an internal memo Burke sent to executives recently, he said details of the cuts would be announced Friday.  He said in addition to a 10% cut in spending, Trek would substantially reduce its stock keeping units (SKUs), saying Trek’s model year 2026 SKUs will be 40% lower than model year 2024.

“These are turbulent times in our business,” Burke began in a confidential Company Update document that Burke sent internally, which BRAIN has obtained.

He went on to say the global bike market is “in chaos,” with high inventory levels at wholesale and retail levels, leading to “significant and continued” discounting. He said retail sales were also below Trek forecasts, including in January and February this year. He said the company had not hit its monthly sales goals for the past 15 months.

He said the situation left him with three options: simply hope for better days ahead, continue to make cuts around the edges, or “right size our business to the realities of the marketplace.” He said he decided to take the third route.

He said Trek would reduce overall spending by 10% with cuts to programs and positions, with decisions made on or before March 8. Trek will also simplify its product lines and reduce inventory levels; He said model year 2026 inventory will be 20% lower, measured in days in stock, than they were before the pandemic bike boom.

However, Burke said Trek’s overall strategy has not changed and the brand’s “flywheel” is “spot on.”

BRAIN has reached out to a Trek representative for a response.

The Trek news comes amid many cuts across the independent bicycle channel and related businesses in the past year, including cuts at Vista Outdoor , HLC , Rad Power, REI , Zwift, QBP, The Pro’s Closet and Signa Sports United (owner of WiggleCRC and other e-commerce brands).

Savvino-storozhevsky monastery and museum.

Savvino-Storozhevsky Monastery and Museum

Zvenigorod's most famous sight is the Savvino-Storozhevsky Monastery, which was founded in 1398 by the monk Savva from the Troitse-Sergieva Lavra, at the invitation and with the support of Prince Yury Dmitrievich of Zvenigorod. Savva was later canonised as St Sabbas (Savva) of Storozhev. The monastery late flourished under the reign of Tsar Alexis, who chose the monastery as his family church and often went on pilgrimage there and made lots of donations to it. Most of the monastery’s buildings date from this time. The monastery is heavily fortified with thick walls and six towers, the most impressive of which is the Krasny Tower which also serves as the eastern entrance. The monastery was closed in 1918 and only reopened in 1995. In 1998 Patriarch Alexius II took part in a service to return the relics of St Sabbas to the monastery. Today the monastery has the status of a stauropegic monastery, which is second in status to a lavra. In addition to being a working monastery, it also holds the Zvenigorod Historical, Architectural and Art Museum.

Belfry and Neighbouring Churches

trek bicycle s.r.l

Located near the main entrance is the monastery's belfry which is perhaps the calling card of the monastery due to its uniqueness. It was built in the 1650s and the St Sergius of Radonezh’s Church was opened on the middle tier in the mid-17th century, although it was originally dedicated to the Trinity. The belfry's 35-tonne Great Bladgovestny Bell fell in 1941 and was only restored and returned in 2003. Attached to the belfry is a large refectory and the Transfiguration Church, both of which were built on the orders of Tsar Alexis in the 1650s.

trek bicycle s.r.l

To the left of the belfry is another, smaller, refectory which is attached to the Trinity Gate-Church, which was also constructed in the 1650s on the orders of Tsar Alexis who made it his own family church. The church is elaborately decorated with colourful trims and underneath the archway is a beautiful 19th century fresco.

Nativity of Virgin Mary Cathedral

trek bicycle s.r.l

The Nativity of Virgin Mary Cathedral is the oldest building in the monastery and among the oldest buildings in the Moscow Region. It was built between 1404 and 1405 during the lifetime of St Sabbas and using the funds of Prince Yury of Zvenigorod. The white-stone cathedral is a standard four-pillar design with a single golden dome. After the death of St Sabbas he was interred in the cathedral and a new altar dedicated to him was added.

trek bicycle s.r.l

Under the reign of Tsar Alexis the cathedral was decorated with frescoes by Stepan Ryazanets, some of which remain today. Tsar Alexis also presented the cathedral with a five-tier iconostasis, the top row of icons have been preserved.

Tsaritsa's Chambers

trek bicycle s.r.l

The Nativity of Virgin Mary Cathedral is located between the Tsaritsa's Chambers of the left and the Palace of Tsar Alexis on the right. The Tsaritsa's Chambers were built in the mid-17th century for the wife of Tsar Alexey - Tsaritsa Maria Ilinichna Miloskavskaya. The design of the building is influenced by the ancient Russian architectural style. Is prettier than the Tsar's chambers opposite, being red in colour with elaborately decorated window frames and entrance.

trek bicycle s.r.l

At present the Tsaritsa's Chambers houses the Zvenigorod Historical, Architectural and Art Museum. Among its displays is an accurate recreation of the interior of a noble lady's chambers including furniture, decorations and a decorated tiled oven, and an exhibition on the history of Zvenigorod and the monastery.

Palace of Tsar Alexis

trek bicycle s.r.l

The Palace of Tsar Alexis was built in the 1650s and is now one of the best surviving examples of non-religious architecture of that era. It was built especially for Tsar Alexis who often visited the monastery on religious pilgrimages. Its most striking feature is its pretty row of nine chimney spouts which resemble towers.

Trek Roscoe 24

Trek Roscoe 24

Roscoe 24 is a mid-fat kids' mountain bike designed to build confidence on the trail. It takes cues from the adult Roscoe, but this ride was built from the ground up for kids. 2.8" mid-fat tires, a 1x drivetrain, and a wide-range cassette make Roscoe the ideal bike for little rippers who want to build skills and have a ridiculous amount of fun keeping up with Mom, Dad, or an older sibling. Fit for riders 51-59" tall. It's right for you if... Your little shredder is ready to hop off the neighborhood streets and onto the trail, and you want to get them started the right way with a real-deal mountain bike that builds skills and confidence from the outset. If you're looking to teach your little one the wisdom of the trail, there's no better teaching tool than Roscoe. The tech you get A durable Alpha Gold Aluminum frame with a sloping top tube for added clearance, 24" wheels with mid-fat 2.8" tires for added traction and stability, a 1x8 Shimano drivetrain with a wide-range cassette for hills and technical sections, mechanical disc brakes, and loads of thoughtful details borrowed from adult MTB tech, like a closed front dropout and a tucked-in rear brake caliper so when kids drop their Roscoe it doesn't mean an automatic trip to the shop for a replacement part. The final word Give a kid a Roscoe and you'll make a mountain biker for life. Mid-fat tires and a wealth of kid-specific design details make this bike the perfect introduction to the trail. If your little one is ready to tag along when you hit the singletrack, this is the kid-friendly set-up that's made to build confidence, skills, and a healthy obsession with the world's greatest activity. Why you'll love it - There's no family outing as fun as a trail session, and Roscoe is the ideal kids' bike for building great memories - This isn't a small adult bike—it's built from the ground up for kids, by people who know exactly what works for them and what doesn't - When you're learning to ride, simplicity is best: a 1x8 drivetrain lets kids focus on keeping the rubber side down - The kid-specific frame geometry has a sloping top tube that makes it easier to hop on and off - The rear brake caliper is tucked into the frame to help prevent damage from laying the bike down

Negative longitude values correspond to the geographic locations west of the prime meridian (abbrev. W).

UTM or Universal Transverse Mercator coordinate system divides the Earth’s surface into 60 longitudinal zones. The coordinates of a location within each zone are defined as a planar coordinate pair related to the intersection of the equator and the zone’s central meridian, and measured in meters.

Elevation above sea level is a measure of a geographic location’s height. We are using the global digital elevation model GTOPO30 .

BYD’s $10,000 Seagull EV worrying rivals as it hits new markets

Avatar for Peter Johnson

China’s BYD is launching its cheapest electric car in Europe next year. Ahead of its official debut, BYD’s $10K Seagull EV is already creating a stir among foreign rivals.

BYD is on a roll. Earlier this year, it declared a “liberation battle” against gas-powered vehicles and launched its cheapest EV , the Seagull Honor Edition.

Starting at $9,700 (69,80 yuan), BYD’s new Seagull EV is already stoking fear among rivals. Powered by BYD’s Blade batteries, the electric car is available in 30.08 kWh and 38.88 kWh models, which provide up to 190 miles (305 km) and 252 miles (405 km) CLTC range, respectively.

The low-cost EV earned the nickname “mini Lamborghini” as former Lamborghini designer Wolfgang Egger led the project.

Despite its affordable price tag, the Seagull’s interior features a 10.1″ rotating center screen with an otherwise minimalist design. Users can also interact and play media with DiLink’s intelligent network.

BYD’s Seagull is available in three trims in China. The base (Active) starts under $10K (69,800 yuan). The Free trim starts at $10,500 (75,800 yuan), while the range-topping Flying model costs $12,000 (85,800 yuan).

BYD’s $10K Seagull EV causing a stir among rivals

Terry Woychowski, former GM executive and president of automotive at Caresoft Global, called BYD’s low-cost Seagull a potential “clarion call for the rest of the industry” earlier this year.

Caresoft, an engineering and consulting firm, looks at every vehicle component to determine how it can be improved for its clients. After testing the Seagull , the company said it was simple and efficiently designed. More importantly, Caresoft was surprised by the electric car’s quality and reliability.

“What they do is done very well,” Woychowski said, “It’s efficiently done. BYD has already launched the Seagull in overseas markets, including Brazil.

The affordable EV is creating a stir among rivals. Ford CEO Jim Farley called it a “pretty damn good” car. Meanwhile, Martin Sander, head of Ford’s European EV unit, said, “Of course, we are nervous when new competition is coming to the market.”

Sold under the name Dolphin Mini, BYD’s low-cost electric car starts at around $20,000 (99,800 BRL) in Brazil, undercutting most of the competition.

In Mexico, it starts at $19,780 (358,800 pesos). Although Mexico “is not great for us,” according to BYD Americas CEO Stella Li. Li explained, “In the end we found a lot of demand, a lot of heat” for the Seagull.

Now, BYD aims even higher. Next year, it will launch the Seagull EV in Europe to compete with VW, Stellantis, and others on its home turf.

BYD-Seagull-EV

Despite tariffs, BYD expects the Seagull to start at less than 20,000 euros ($21,500). That’s still thousands lower than its rivals.

And BYD isn’t stopping there. The EV maker plans to launch a higher-end 25,000 euro ($27,000) electric car, according to European managing director Michael Shu. In addition, with two plants planned in the region, BYD expects to overcome the potential impacts of EU tariffs on China-made EVs.

Electrek’s Take

Although several automakers have recently announced plans to launch affordable EVs, BYD is already on top of the market.

With BYD’s $10K Seagull EV rolling out globally, rivals are bracing for the impact. Other automakers, like Ford and Kia, have shifted plans to focus on smaller, more affordable EVs to keep up with demand.

Meanwhile, although BYD is best known for its low-cost electric cars, the automaker is expanding into new segments.

BYD launched the Sea Lion 07 , a mid-size electric SUV set to rival Tesla’s best-selling Model Y. Starting at $26,250 (189,800 yuan), the new electric SUV undercuts the Model Y, which starts at $34,550 (249,900) in China.

Top comment by Beario

This car and company is the reason why I felt Tesla should have introduced an affordable model car instead of going the robotaxi route. BYD cars are well made and I am certain they are going to sell a lot wherever they are sold. In the United States, we can implement all the tariffs we want. It is going going to cause retaliatory tariffs implemented by China and then we will have a back and forth price war which benefits no one and makes consumers suffer. Tariffs will only slow down innovation in the US because car manufacturers here will not feel a need to make better cars and continue to sell us mediocre EVs. Our focus should be on innovation and making our products better to compete with companies like BYD.

The company is also launching a series of high-end luxury vehicles under its Yangwang brand. In February, the brand launched its first electric supercar , the U9, starting at $233,400 (1,680,000 yuan).

Yangwang’s first vehicle, the U8 off-roader, made its European debut at the Geneva International Motor Show in February.

BYD also launched its first pickup , the Shark PHEV, last week in Mexico, which will rival Toyota’s best-selling Hilux and Ford’s Ranger.
