Spend Hours Walking Around the World's Great Neighborhoods with These Addictive YouTube Channels

Narration-free virtual walking tours are racking up millions of views as they scratch our travel itch in isolation.

By Jason Cochran

September 29, 2020

By now, many of us have started to have travel daydreams. What we wouldn't give just to unwrap a tiny bar of hotel soap, to drag a piece a luggage over cobblestones, or to tell the flight attendant no, we don't want coffee right now, thanks.

We have just the YouTube channel for you. Watched Walker films leisurely strolls through the world's great streets.

That's it. Watching the channel's high-definition virtual walking tours, which have garnered view counts into the millions, you head down streets with a steadied camera, exploring whole neighborhoods on foot.

As you gently go, you hear the sounds of conversation and commerce in passing. Sometimes, you amble through famous markets . Other times, you might be taken to explore London's legendary  Selfridge's department store for half an hour (see below).

A year ago, we might have shrugged at the concept. This year, we're fighting the urge to leave these videos running all day, like a radio.

And we could: Watched Walker has well over a hundred choices, most of them between 20 minutes and an hour long. There's no goofy host, usually no narration—just the sweet zen of you-are-there exploration.

Watched Walker posts new videos on Monday and Thursday. Right now, the host is marooned in his home city (like most of us), so there's a lot of London being shown. Fortunately, that's a destination rich with video opportunities. (Get ready for coverage of holiday decoration season—last year's  Oxford Street at Christmas walk has racked up nearly 1.5 million views so far.)

Spend an hour and change lazily strolling around London's West End and Covent Garden on a rainy Saturday night:

Lots of other European destinations have been captured by the account's cameras, too, including Paris , Barcelona , Madrid , the beaches in the South of France , and even the  trams of Lisbon .

Virtual walking videos evoke the sights and sounds of travel, so they can scratch the travel itch for some of us. Fortunately, these videos now make up a bit of a subgenre on YouTube.

Similar long-form wandering videos are posted by the channels Rambalac (lots of Japan),  Wind Walk (which leans toward the western U.S. and east Asia),  ActionKid  (who posts a lot of Taiwan and New York City , but with narration), and  Wanna Walk (strong on Latin America and South America), among others.

"Walking around" videos are almost like being there—and they're whetting our excitement for the trips we're going to take in the future. They remind us of the way we explore on a real vacation, but without the blisters.

12 Virtual Walking Trails Around the World That You Can Experience Right Now (Video)

Be whisked away to the mountains of Switzerland or the rugged Oregon coastline.

Evie Carrick is a writer and editor who’s lived in five countries and visited well over 50. She now splits her time between Colorado and Paris, ensuring she doesn't have to live without skiing or L'As du Fallafel.

In a matter of weeks, the terms shelter in place, self-isolation, and quarantine have become buzzwords, giving definition to many people’s new reality: staying home. Zoom happy hours have replaced post-work drinks and once-neglected home projects are finally getting finished.

But there are only so many Zoom calls to arrange and tasks around the house to complete. When your home begins to feel more like a cell and less like a refuge, it might be time to make an escape. And while you may not be able to hop in your car and head to the nearest state park, virtual walking routes can provide a mental escape from the norm. Plus, according to Psychology Today , “Studies suggest that viewing even an image of a tree or a forest canopy bolsters the parasympathetic division of the central nervous system that naturally induces calm.”

And in today’s world, an added sense of calm is essential.

These virtual walking routes and trails deliver new landscapes, fresh perspectives, and plenty of calm-inducing flora while transporting you all over the world. You can enjoy the view from your exercise bike or at-home treadmill, or cozy up on your couch and allow yourself to be whisked away to the mountains of Switzerland or the rugged Oregon coastline.

1. Moraine Lake in Banff National Park, Alberta, Canada

If a visit to Banff National Park isn’t on your bucket list, it should be. But why wait for quarantine to lift before witnessing the bright blue waters of Moraine Lake? This glacially fed lake is situated in the Valley of the Ten Peaks in Banff National Park. It’s the sort of place you’ll never forget, and you can experience it virtually right now.

2. Indian Beach Trail, Oregon

This virtual hike takes you along the rugged Oregon coast on a perfectly sunny day, showing off stunning ocean views, rocky beaches, and plenty of lush, green forest. The popular trail travels through Ecola State Park, delivering jaw-dropping vistas every step of the way.

3. Pyramids of Giza, Egypt

This walking route takes you to another world — one of sandy terrain dotted with looming pyramids. This well-shot walking tour starts at the Mortuary Temple of Khafre, passing by the pyramids of Khafre, Khufu, and Menkaure, before ending at the iconic sphinx.

4. Havasu Falls, Arizona

You must have a reservation to enter the Havasupai tribal lands, where the stunning turquoise-green Havasu Falls can be found. Located in the Grand Canyon, this virtual tour winds between mesas, taking you through stunning red-rock desert as you near the powerful falls.

5. Tunnel of Love, Ukraine

If you’re looking for a hearty dose of green, head to Klevan, Ukraine, home of the lush Tunnel of Love. After spending three hours virtually walking on this abandoned train track that’s surrounded on all sides by bright green foliage and chirping birds, it’s near-impossible to feel anything but relaxed.

6. James Irvine Trail in Redwood National Park, California

It doesn’t get more relaxing than walking amongst the giant redwoods on a calm summer day. Paired with soothing music, this virtual walking route instills an immediate sense of peace the moment the camera starts rolling.

7. Village of Positano, Italy

If you’re up for experiencing a new culture — in addition to enjoying a virtual hike — this tour of Positano, a cliffside village on the Amalfi Coast in southern Italy, is hard to beat. You’ll pass through steep, narrow streets lined with boutiques and cafes as you head down toward the beaches and waters below.

8. Wailea Beach Path, Hawaii

With its year-round tropical climate and never-ending ribbon of beaches, Hawaii is a top destination for many Americans. But thanks to this virtual experience , you don’t have to fly across the ocean to get a feel for the islands. The tour takes you from the Andaz Maui at Wailea Resort to the Fairmont Kea Lani and along the Wailea Beach Path.

9. Bryce Canyon National Park, Utah

For a complete change of scenery, head to the red rocks of Utah, where you can virtually slink through narrow canyons and wind along high-desert paths. The view only gets more stunning when you enter into the trail’s wooded areas. Here, the red rock and dirt pop against the greens and browns.

10. Hoh Rain Forest in Olympic National Park, Washington

The moss-covered trees and neon green foliage seen along this trail are so vibrant that it feels like you’re walking on another planet. This special bit of nature is arguably just as stunning in this 4K-resolution virtual hiking experience as it is in real life.

11. Panorama Trail, Switzerland

This virtual walking trail starts at Männlichen, then takes you on a beautiful and easy downhill walk to Kleine Scheidegg, a mountain pass between the Eiger and Lauberhorn mountain peaks. Along the way, enjoy meeting (albeit virtually) some Swiss cows before descending amidst stunning mountain views.

12. Juan de Fuca Trail in British Columbia, Canada

Up north in British Columbia, you can virtually experience the beautiful Juan de Fuca Trail on Vancouver Island. Located within Juan de Fuca Provincial Park , this virtual walking route takes you deep into the forest and along the coastline, with occasional views of the Olympic Mountains.

Five Easy Steps To Make great 4K Travel Walking Tour Videos

Last Updated on March 22, 2024 by gregor

4K Walking Tour Videos are gaining more and more popularity on video-sharing platforms like the popular video platform YouTube . I watched some of these Walking Tour videos because they were recommended to me, and as someone who really likes walking tours, I decided to try making one video myself.

My first 4k Walking Tour video(s) turned out badly. They were either too bright or too dark or kept constantly refocusing.,… They went straight into the trash on my computer. It was a little frustrating, but obviously, I’m not going to be perfect on my first try.

I was out again, trying different cameras and different settings, and after a few walks, figuring out what is the best camera for Walking Tour and what are the best camera video settings for filming this kind of 4k Walking Tour videos.

A 4K walk video often showcases a walking tour or journey filmed using a camera capable of recording in 4K resolution. These videos aim to provide viewers with a more immersive and visually stunning experience, as the higher resolution allows for greater detail, sharpness, and overall image quality. The term is commonly associated with content creators who produce walking tours or vlogs filmed in 4K resolution to offer a more lifelike and engaging viewing experience.

5 easy Steps to Make 4k Travel Walking Tour Videos

Ready to share your travel adventures with the world in amazing 4K quality? Here’s a super simple guide to creating captivating walking tour videos:

Step 1: Gear Up (Equipment)

  • Camera:  While a fancy camera is great, you can start with a smartphone that shoots in 4K. Many modern phones offer fantastic video quality.
  • Stabilizer:  Shaky footage is a no-go. Invest in a gimbal (a small handheld stabilizer) for smooth, professional-looking shots.
  • External Microphone (optional):  Built-in mics can pick up unwanted noise. An external mic improves audio quality, especially in windy or crowded areas.

Step 2: Plan Your Route (Pre-Production)

  • Pick a theme:  Focus on a specific area or highlight hidden gems.
  • Map your walk:  Plan your route beforehand, considering interesting sights and stops.
  • Research local tips:  Learn some fun facts or historical tidbits to share with viewers.

Step 3: Hit the Streets (Filming)

  • Walk at a steady pace:  People watching your video will be virtually walking with you, so maintain a comfortable speed.
  • Narrate as you go:  Share your thoughts, interesting facts, or personal anecdotes about the places you pass.
  • Capture variety:  Don’t just film straight ahead. Get close-up shots of landmarks, interesting details, and even food!

Step 4: Editing Magic (Post-Production)

  • Editing software:  There are many free and paid editing programs available. Choose one that’s user-friendly for you.
  • Cut and trim:  Remove unwanted footage or long pauses. Keep your video engaging and concise.
  • Add music and text:  Upbeat background music and titles/captions enhance your video and keep viewers informed.

Step 5: Share Your Adventure (Distribution)

  • YouTube:  A popular platform for travel videos. Create a channel and upload your masterpiece!
  • Social Media:  Share your video on Facebook, Instagram, or other social media platforms.
  • Travel Blogs:  If you have one, add your video to your blog to showcase your destinations.

Bonus Tip: Be yourself and have fun! Let your personality shine through, and your passion for travel will be contagious!

Videos with 4K Quality

A 4K walk typically refers to a walking video or footage that has been recorded and produced in 4K resolution. In the context of video resolution, 4K refers to a display or content with a horizontal pixel count of approximately 4,000 pixels, providing higher image clarity and detail compared to lower resolutions.

A “4K walk” video often showcases a walking tour or journey filmed using a camera capable of recording in 4K resolution.

4k Walking Tour video cameras:

Dji pocket 2 + creator combo.

DJI2CreatorCombo_4kVideos

Camera settings (they are overall easy to find in the app and in the menu)

Image Quality: 4K

Frame rates:

  • – 25 or 50 (for slow-motion only – to be slowed down 50% when editing): for Europe (PAL in general)
  • – 24 or 48 (for slow-motion only – to be slowed down 50% when editing): for US (NTCS in general)

Personally live in Europe and I slow down everything that I shoot, only sometimes do I keep a normal speed, so my go rate is 50fps. Slowing down the video gives it a more magical look and will reduce the shakes from the camera

Antiflicker : auto

you need to set it before activating pro mode!

Pro mode: enabled

This will give you access to manual settings of exposure

Color profile : d-cine like

Note: only if you plan to color grade in the post (which I highly recommend), if not then stick to the standard

Shutter speed/ISO:

I always set it to Auto . You could fine-tune by setting it manually, but the AUTO Mode on the DJI is pretty amazing.

White Balance: AUTO

I am so far happy to shoot with continuous autofocus, but be aware that it sometimes fails and you will need to point to the subject you want to have in focus.

GoPro Hero 10 + Sennheiser MKE-400 Microphone

youtube walking tour videos

The Sennheiser Microphone is a perfect companion, not only for your DLSR. With the GoPro MediaMod, you can set up the GoPro 10 with the Sennheiser MKE 400 within a couple of minutes. If you are really serious about your audio quality it is a very good investment.  #mke400

Lens: WIDE or LINEAR or LINEAR + HL

HyperSmooth: High

Pre-Walking Tour Preparation

Preparation is the mother of success! This is also related to the making of 4K Walking Tour Videos.

Define your Storyline for the Audience

Before you even select the walking route, I am really trying to find a good storyline for the audience, which I am going to tell as an overall “arching theme” for the walk. As we all know, telling a story is much more captive than just wandering around without any “preparation & plan”. (Which I did at the beginning, to be honest;-

Here are some examples of 4k Walking Tour Video Storylines

  • Vienna Night Walking Tour – Top things to see at night
  • Berlin – Walking Tour if you just have 4 Hours to spend
  • Budapest Travel Guide – Must See Places Walking Tour
  • Vienna Food Walking Tour

Find the Best Places that set your Walking Tour Video Screenplay

So once you have your “story” you want to tell, then you need to find the best places, spots, and areas,… Which do you want to be included in the walking video? Sometimes the story can be “Greatest Public Parks to Relax in XXXX” or just “An After Business sunset walk”. This story sets your screenplay and the frame you need to plan the walk accordingly.

Video elements that will support your Walking Tour Video Story

If you know you’ll be visiting the St. Stephen’s Cathedral in Vienna, for example, you’ll want more than just a video from the top. Here’s an example of supporting walking tour video elements you might make for this specific experience:

  • Establishing shot of the St. Stephen’s Cathedral from the street (Push in)
  • Shot of the base of the St. Stephen’s Cathedral (Rise up)
  • Shot of purchasing your ticket (Over shoulder camera)
  • Shot of taking the elevator to the top (Push in)
  • Panning shot from the top overlooking Vienna

Pin the places in Google MAPS to create the Walking Tour

Once I have my story I create a tour on Google Maps, pinning all the places I intend to visit during my walk.

Top Tip: Please make sure you plan enough time for your tour, get comfortable clothes and shoes, your gear with enough spare batteries (for the GoPro), and most importantly get into a good positive energetic mood, you will need that believe me 😉

Video Walking Tour – Tips and Tricks

Get out of your comfort zone.

Filming videos on the street requires a bit of courage at the beginning. Especially if you are a bit introverted like me, it took a couple of walks until I realized that the vast majority of the people actually don’t care about your video recording on the street.

Very few people stare at you, so give them a bright smile, or simply ignore them. I never had anybody complaining or even yelling at me. It helps if you respect their privacy and do not run with the video camera explicitly into a person, but take a step or move left or right so you can record other interesting sceneries like beautiful architecture.

There is also an easy way to blur people’s faces in post-editing your video. (More below in the Editing section)

Walking Tour Video Speed

The walking speed is important because you want to be able to see things that you’re not familiar with. The walker may have been through that area time and time again, but you haven’t.  Keep in mind that the speed of the walk also relates directly to the smoothness of the camera, as I mentioned above.

Video moves : I use during my walk

  • Push in – walk towards the scene – good entry move to establish location and show landscape
  • Pull out – walk away from the scene – good exit move to close the shooting from the scene
  • Round – use active track and move around the person or subject
  • Rise up – show scenery and subject
  • Reveal – show subject, from the other object – good for transitions
  • Tilt-up / down – use for anything interesting above the scene, like trees
  • Low mode – shoot for example the foot of a person while walking on the beach

How do you film a smooth walking Video?

Walk slowly and bend your knees slightly. Keep concentration high, and use the Highest Stabilization settings on your camera

FOUR – Walking Tour Video Editing & Software

There are many Video Editing Programs on the market. Editing my Walking Tour videos, I use the software program Final Cut Pro X which runs on macOS only. There are many alternatives also for Windows, if you search on Google, I am sure you will find the one that fits your needs; including tons of Tutorial Videos on YouTube.

Blurring People Faces in post-editing

The one thing special to walking tour videos is that you also capture people and want to protect their privacy by blurring their faces. Here is a video that shows you how to do this in Final Cut Pro X

EASIEST Way To Blur Faces | Final Cut Pro X Tutorial

FIVE -SHARING Your Walking Tour Video on YouTube

I upload my walking tour videos on my Gregor Sideris YouTube Channel . There are other video-sharing Platforms like Vimeo, but I think YouTube is vastly accepted and billions of people have access to it.

Creating your own YouTube Channel is easy, there are a lot of tutorial videos available on YT.

If you have any questions, do not hesitate to contact me.

Best Camera For Walking Videos (Guide On The 7 Cameras)

Walking travel videos are becoming very popular on platforms like YouTube and TikTok. People are watching these videos exclusively, and it has become a separate genre for content creators.

What makes these videos appealing to people is the quality visuals on them. Recording such high-quality videos always comes down to choosing the right camera and building the correct setup.

Finding the best camera for walking videos is the first hurdle to overcome to record such videos. Whether you want it for content or a hobby, the videos’ quality is crucial. That’s why we bring the top 8 cameras for recording these videos to help you get the best quality.

How To Get Started With Walking Tour Videos?

If you are clueless about where to start with these walking tour videos, this short guide may help. Creating such content involves several steps to reach a point where you can pursue this whole thing professionally. Here are the steps you should follow to make quality walking tour videos.

Step 1: Get The Perfect Camera For Recording

The first step towards making walking tour videos is to get the right camera for recording. If you don’t have a mesmerizing video quality, it won’t captivate people to watch your videos. To get that kind of quality, you have to have a high-quality camera.

That doesn’t mean you need a dedicated camera for that purpose. Even an iPhone can be the perfect camera for recording such videos, considering their quality. Other than an iPhone, you can use mirrorless cameras, pocket cameras, action cameras, and so forth.

Step 2: Assemble The Complete Recording Setup

Just having a camera can get you the desired quality from these walking videos. You will need additional gear like a gimbal or a mount, a quality microphone, recording software, and the perfect settings. Without these things, you can’t achieve the perfect quality.

Among these items, you must emphasize the mount or gimbal to ensure your video has exceptional stabilization.

Even if your camera comes with stabilization, getting a gimbal alongside can always provide the best quality footage for these videos.

Step 3: Plan Out Your Content To Ensure Engagement

Honestly, no one wants to watch a video where someone is simply walking. The video needs to be engaging; the best way to do it is through telling a story. Your videos need to have that appeal to the audience where you tell a story or have a conversation with them.

For instance, you can record these walking videos and explain the history or tell a story regarding the place you are exploring. This can add much value to your video and make it more engaging for the viewers.

Step 4: Execute The Videos Properly

When you are recording such videos, you must ensure that you are not shying away from making content. You can’t be uncomfortable while making these videos.

Also, when recording these videos, you must keep the walking speed in control. Don’t walk too fast, as it may miss out on some spots in the city, and don’t walk too slow to make the video boring and lengthy.

While recording videos, you have to make sure you are capturing the interesting parts of a place. Avoid places that don’t excite the viewers, otherwise, you may not create the engagement you desire in your videos.

Step 5: Editing The Videos

Once you are done recording, you must get to these videos’ post-processing phase. Here, you make the video more appealing through color correction, exposure settings, and, most importantly, blurring people’s faces.

Plenty of software exists for this purpose, such as Final Cut Pro X, Da Vinci Resolve, Adobe Premiere Pro, and so on.

Things To Consider When Buying A Camera For Walking Videos

As soon as you think about buying a camera to record walking videos, you have to consider several considerations for the best result. Considering such factors always lead you toward the most suitable option based on your requirements. Let’s check those out quickly.

Video Quality And Resolution

The most important factor you have to consider in the camera is video quality. The video quality has to be top-notch and bring out the best possible details it can. Of course, nowadays, the standard is to have a camera with at least 4k resolution. So, aim for that resolution in your camera.

The frame rates should be at least 60fps to give you that fluid motion in your videos. While you can get by with 30fps videos, they don’t look as soothing as 60fps or 120fps videos.

Stabilization

Stabilization is another key feature to look for in a camera for creating walking videos. Since you will be walking with the camera, any kind of shakiness will disrupt the quality of the videos. That’s why you get a camera that provides excellent image stabilization features.

Portability

When capturing walking videos, you must get a lightweight and compact camera. You need something easy to carry without aching your hand or filling up your backpack. Also, the camera needs to have a mount or gimbal attachment.

Unique Features

This is where you can differentiate a lot of cameras and find which one is perfect for your purposes. Some cameras come with wireless connectivity to connect your smartphone and start streaming. Then there are some cameras that have microphones and speakers attached to them.

You also get advanced features like AI editing in some cameras. Then there are plenty of handy features like exposure correction, fast tracking, easily replaceable mounts, etc. Get the one that impresses you the most.

Battery Life

The last thing to consider is battery life. You should get a camera with long battery life to capture the most possible footage. A battery backup of around 110 to 160 minutes is great for such a camera, as you won’t be walking through a city more than that.

Final Thoughts

By now, you have a clear idea of what the best camera for walking videos works like. The features you should be prioritizing are image stabilization, video quality, and portability. Anything after that comes down to your preferences.

Considering everything, we would suggest the DJI Pocket 2 Exclusive Combo as the best overall pick. It has excellent video quality while providing good portability and top-notch image stabilization.

But if it doesn’t fancy you, you can always check out the other ones offering various kinds of features. No matter which one you pick, they all deliver on the basic factors for such cameras.

Walking on the Wild Side – YouTube Walking Tour Videos as Community Media

05/10/2021 Rob Watson Community Media 0

youtube walking tour videos

I’m obsessed with walking tour videos on YouTube at the moment. I’ve been watching them as a virtual alternative to travelling during the lockdown. I’m also looking at them to learn how they are produced and presented, and the variations in form that they demonstrate. I’m hoping to build-up a picture of how they work, what kind of stories the tell, and why they are relevant as an emerging form of community media.

There are four videos that I want to use as examples in this blog, each recently filmed in a town or city in England. Each has a different approach that signifies a range of related motivations that define their production. The differences between them are subtle, and this is my first attempt at noting these differences. I’m hoping that over time I can build-up a systematic framework of evaluation that gives a sense of the structure and symbolic relevance of this emergent form of media, and why the differences are worth considering and in what way they matter.

There are a couple of principle styles that I’ve noted in walking tour videos more generally. First, I’ve noticed that walking tour videos are a widespread and common practice on YouTube. They are an international phenomenon, with many examples available from all over the world. Walking tour videos seem to have developed more overtly as a sub-form on YouTube over the last two or four years, with a clear acceleration during the pandemic. I got into watching them as an alternative to going on holiday. I wanted to be reminded of the places that I have been, and where I might like to go when the pandemic travel restrictions are eased.

Walking tour videos provide a good way to explore or reconnect with other cultures. I’ve watched walking tour videos in France, Japan, Thailand, Germany, and here in the UK. They are different from travel vlogging, however, as they don’t tend to focus on a presenter or host who shares their experiences in the style of an expert or ‘lifestyle’ influencer. They are much more stripped back and basic, and don’t over-project the personality of the producer. I’ve found this style to be much more accommodating to my viewing habits and tastes, as I’m not enamoured by personality driven media. Also, as can read and do other things while I’m watching them.

A couple of technical and platform factors shape the increase ease of making these videos for independent and DIY producers, who are sharing these videos as they make them. There’s a number of things that have made these videos more widely accessible and available:

  • The capacity of small digital cameras to shoot at 4K resolution has significantly increased.
  • The capacity of streaming video services to offer accessible curated platforms for on-demand 4K video has increased.
  • Television resolution has improved to the point where 4K video resolution is becoming the norm on larger screens, combined with the integration of streaming platforms within the sets themselves, rather than as separate systems.
  • There has also been a shift towards improved and consumer-friendly editing software, both on laptops, and also on tablets and phones, which has enabled video editing on lower capacity devices.
  • There has similarly been an expansion of the ‘participative impulse,’ through platforms like YouTube, where it is common to learn from other examples of videos producers work, and the widespread availability of production guides and instruction videos.
  • The widespread culture of imitation that defines much of the participative media cultures is enabling new producers to find out in real time how others make video content that they can model and follow as a template.
  • Improved microphones, available either as as external or internal devices, with enhanced sound quality and wind reduction processing, has also greatly enhanced the viewing experience.

The two main types of videos I’ve seen so far are:

  • Travel Guides – where a formal tour is facilitated.
  • Personal Guides – where an impressionistic tour is facilitated.

In the travel guide format, videos are often produced specifically to inform potential visitors who are thinking of travelling to a ‘destination’ place. The tenor is marketing, with the aim of highlighting a flavour of the key features and culture of a town or city. This includes popular and readily available landmarks, the proximity of public transport hubs, the café and street culture of a place, and so on. These videos are often made with a DSLR camera that records high-definition video that is supported with a hand-held gimble to hold the camera steady. These videos are often created as promotional material for the travel and tourism industry. They give a sense of what a tourist visitor might expect as they explore and discover economic and cultural aspects of a town. Cafes, art galleries, monuments, architecture and transport are often the focus of these videos. There is clearly an effort to show the place in a good light, often being produced on sunny days, or on a warm evening when people are relaxing. These videos tend to be about one hour in duration. They tend not to have a voiceover or music, and the duration of the shots is extended, with minimal edits and transitions. Some have titles and flashcards giving information at strategic points of the journey.

The second style of video is more DIY in style, with the producer using a hand-held phone or a low-cost action camera. These videos tend to offer a more personal point of view by the producer, for whom there is a clear link and sense of identification with the place being explored, and who doesn’t necessarily wish to ‘guild-the-lily’ to show a place in an artificially positive light. The sound is captured using the basic onboard microphones, which are often prone to wind noise. The camera movement is often shaky, as image stabilisation is not robust enough to keep the image still. There may be a simple voiceover provided by the producer, and recorded as part of the walk, or simply a conversation held between the people who are shooting the video.

These videos are much more ‘vérité’ in style, in that they don’t attempt to present a place in a ‘cinematic’ light, but are primarily focussed on sharing the experience of the producer in the place as it is, and according to the conditions on the day, as defined by the available capture devices used at the time. These walking tour videos are striped back and they keep editing relatively basic and simple, with stock overlays and little use of music. Most important, the role of the producer in these videos is to facilitate the presentation of the images, rather than profiling a presenter who often acts as a social media influencer.

As I’ve been watching these videos, I’ve been wondering if walking tour videos are a form of community media? I suppose a lot depends on the intent of the producers, and the level of capability that they profess in making them. They have got me thinking about to what extent these videos service the impulses of the participation culture? To what extent are they driven by an alternative aesthetic of self-produced DIY styling?  To what extent are these independent and widely diverse producers learning to create and share this content as they go along? What are the skills and media literacies that are being collectively and individually anticipated in producing these videos? To what extent does the culture of YouTube define a pre-cognitive (as in anticipated) state for producing and sharing content?

There is a broad tolerance on YouTube for content that is de-professionalised and ad-hoc, so does the rough-and-ready style of capture and editing bring an authenticity to what the viewer might expect and is prepared to accept? They have a somewhat deconstructed flavour, so does this make them more accessible to viewers, while simultaneously allowing others to have a go at producing their own versions?

What these videos seem to do, as far as I can tell at this point, is to capture a moment and point in time. A moment that illustrates what it was like to be in a specific place on a certain day and under certain conditions. The lack of production values clears a pathway for the individual to connect with their impulse to document and record the world around them. In some ways, the video recording and the sharing of the edited content captures something that would be similar to that which an ordinary member of the public, walking through these streets, might experience. It might be raining, it might be windy, the sounds might be intermittent and discordant. And as the artifice of media curation and editing is abandoned or stripped away, what steps into the centre for the viewer is the motivational impulse of the video creator. It’s a raw and honest way to share and capture images in and for their own sake. This form of walking tour videos seems to be determined more from a participatory impulse than from a strategic (i.e. business or marketing) impulse, or from a representational (i.e. wishing to present a positive face) impulse. They are not journalism, as they do not interrogate a situation. They are not historical, as they don’t necessarily seek to contextualise. They are a document of what is there. They are community reporting.

Two videos stand out in this regard: (the videos are embedded below)

  • St Helens – Exploring with JB
  • Blackpool – A Walk on the Wild Side

Each offers an authorial mode, however incomplete, that directs attention of the viewer. This is done by either providing a limited commentary, which offers a narrow sense of context and placement of the footage within the present, such as where the video was recorded, what the location was, and what the prevailing conditions were. Alternatively, there is no commentary, and the sounds collected in the environment stand by themselves. My initial feeling is that there is a sense of ‘pull’ between that which is expected to be noted, and that which is actually noted. This is not documentary television or news reporting. What is placed in front of the viewer is a partial vignette. What it’s significance is, and who the people are that are being represented, is not explained. What the social setting is, and why is it relevant, is left to the viewer to decide. In my impressionistic viewing, it would be usefully to add a caveat, that many of these videos may only make sense retrospectively, after there has been an accumulation of many more uploads from different contributors.

Why, then, are these video walking tours relevant to community media, and are they a form of community media? I would answer emphatically yes. They can be defined as an emergent form of community media, as opposed to being a form of social media, because they have a different social purpose than the personalised media that is expressed in social media platforms like Twitter, Instagram and Facebook. What they do, which is a crucial element of community media, is that they focus on the link with places and the subsequently localised identities that are played out in each setting. In contrast to the promotional tours that are used as travel guides, these impressionistic videos are clearly created and shared by people who have an affinity with the place they are located.

Whereas the Liverpool and the Castle Combe videos are created and shared by visitors to the places, the Blackpool and St Helens videos are created by indigenous locals. The intentionality associated with local representation is in contrast to the travel and exploratory ethic that is demonstrated in other videos. Clearly, there will be more development in the practice and function of these videos, and how they are situated in community representations. More defined features may emerge. How these videos are recognised is the essential element of practice. Are the people who create them intending to develop a community as an informed profile? Do they see a need to fill gaps in local information and representation needs? Are they open to collaborative and community-driven accountability? Do they see themselves as providing a service to the members of their community, or are they focussed on appealing to external audiences? There is so much to be learnt and understood about how these tours work, and whet they may possibly offer. These comments are just the start of a long and extended process of study.

Scottie Scheffler arrested for allegedly assaulting officer near fatal crash while on way to PGA Championship

Updated on: May 17, 2024 / 8:45 PM EDT / CBS/AP

Masters champion Scottie Scheffler  was arrested by police in Louisville on Friday morning on his way to the PGA Championship, with stunning images showing him handcuffed as he was led to a police car and charged with assaulting an officer after allegedly attempting to drive around traffic backed up from a pedestrian fatality investigation. Scheffler was released later in the morning and continued competing in the tournament.

Police said Scheffler was booked for second-degree assault of a police officer, third-degree criminal mischief, reckless driving and disregarding traffic signals from an officer directing traffic. In a statement to CBS News, Scheffler's attorney Steve Romines said the golfer "never at any point assaulted any officer with his vehicle" and added that "we will litigate this matter as needed."

In a statement posted to Instagram , Scheffler said he was in a "very chaotic situation."

"There was a big misunderstanding of what I thought I was being asked to do," Scheffler said. "I never intended to disregard any of the instructions. I'm hopeful to put this to the side and focus on golf today."

Police said a pedestrian had been struck by a bus while crossing the road in a lane that was dedicated to tournament traffic. Police said the man died at the scene, CBS affiliate WLKY  reported . Traffic was backed up for about a mile in both directions on the only road that leads to Valhalla Golf Club, with dozens of police cars flashing red-and-blue lights near the entrance.

Scheffler, the No. 1 player in the world, later started the second round shortly after 10 a.m. EDT. After finishing Friday's round, Scheffler told reporters he wouldn't discuss specific details about the incident, but he said he didn't know at the time that the accident ahead of him in traffic was fatal.

"I feel like my head's still spinning," Scheffler said. "I can't really explain what happened this morning. I did spend some time stretching in a jail cell — that was a first for me."

Scheffler expressed confidence that the charges would "get resolved, I think, fairly quickly."

Why was Scottie Scheffler arrested?

According to a police report, Scheffler was in an eastbound lane and pulled into the westbound lanes, where a uniformed detective was standing. The detective stopped Scheffler and attempted to give him instructions, but Scheffler "refused to comply and accelerated forward," according to the report.

The detective, identified as Det. Gillis, was dragged "to the ground" and suffered "pain, swelling, and abrasions to his left wrist," according to the report.

The detective was dressed in a high visibility reflective jacket when he stopped Scheffler's car to give instructions, the arrest sheet said. Gillis was taken to the hospital for his injuries.

The Louisville Metro Police Department said that all lanes were closed during the traffic fatality investigation.

"While an officer was directing traffic, an encounter with a motorist attempting to make entry into a restricted area ultimately led to the driver being arrested," the police said in a statement. "We are in the process of conducting a thorough investigation. We are appreciative that all parties involved are fully cooperating."

Romines said Scheffler was driving a marked player's vehicle and proceeding as he'd been instructed.

"I think the officer that was directing traffic was maybe not part of the event traffic detail and so that's where the miscommunication arose, and that's why we're here," Romines told WLKY.

ESPN reporter Jeff Darlington said he watched this unfold with Scheffler driving past a police officer a little after 6 a.m. in his SUV. He said police pulled Scheffler out of the vehicle, pushed him up against the car and immediately placed him in handcuffs.

In this still image made from video provided by ESPN, Masters champion Scottie Scheffler is escorted to a police car after being handcuffed near Valhalla Golf Club, the site of the PGA Championship golf tournament, early May 17, 2024.

"Scheffler was then walked over to the police car, placed in the back, in handcuffs, very stunned about what was happening, looked toward me as he was in those handcuffs and said, 'Please help me,'" Darlington said. "He very clearly did not know what was happening in the situation. It moved very quickly, very rapidly, very aggressively."

Darlington said whole the incident started with a "misunderstanding with traffic flow."

With cars backed up in the morning darkness, other PGA-marked vehicles tried to move slowly toward the entrance. Traffic finally began to move slowly a little before 7 a.m.

A spokesperson for the PGA of America identified the man who was struck by the shuttle bus as John Mills. In a statement, the PGA's Greg Dillard said Mills, a worker with one of the group's vendors, was going to work when he was hit.

"This is heartbreaking to all of us involved with the PGA Championship," the PGA said in a statement. "We extend our sincere condolences to their family and loved ones."

Kentucky Gov. Andy Beshear conveyed his condolences on social media , saying, "Our hearts are broken, and we continue to pray for the victim's family."

"The events that occurred afterward are the unfortunate result of this tragic incident, and we are hopeful that all parties involved can come to a resolution," Beshear said.

Scheffler also expressed his sympathies for the man who died.

"It truly puts everything in perspective," Scheffler said on social media.

The website for the Louisville Metropolitan Department of Corrections briefly showed a booking photo of Scheffler before the photo was removed. According to the website, Scheffler was released at 8:40 a.m.

Did Scottie Scheffler play today?

Scheffler returned to the course at 9:12 a.m. He made his way to the practice area around 9:30 a.m. and was welcomed by fans — one shouted "free Scottie!"

Scheffler seemed like his normal, relaxed self, sharing a few laughs on the driving range. Then he went out and made a birdie on his first hole of the day after sticking his approach shot to three feet. Scheffler finished Friday's round two strokes behind leader Collin Morikawa at nine strokes under par for the tournament, CBS Sports reports .

It was a surreal start to what already has been a wild week of weather — the Masters champion and top-ranked in the world, dressed in workout clothes with his hands in cuffs behind his back amid flashing flights.

Darlington said police were not sure who he was. He said an officer asked him to leave and when he identified himself being with the media, he was told, "There's nothing you can do. He's going to jail."

Darlington said another police officer later approached with a notepad and asked if he knew the name of the person they put in handcuffs.

Scottie Scheffler of the United States plays his shot from the 12th tee during the second round of the 2024 PGA Championship at Valhalla Golf Club on May 17, 2024, in Louisville, Kentucky.

Scheffler is coming off four victories in his last five tournaments. He was home in Dallas for the last three weeks waiting on the birth of his first child, a son who was born on May 8.

"I feel like my head is still spinning. I can't really explain what happened this morning," Scheffler said after remarkably posting another 5-under 66 Friday that kept him in the mix for a second straight major championship. He is seeking to become only the fifth player since 1960 to win the first two majors of the year.

Last month, Scheffler won his second  Masters Tournament  victory in three years, finishing 11 under and four strokes up on his closest competitors.
