Sleeper trains are having a moment. And why wouldn’t they? More eco-friendly than flying —with none of the hassle that comes from even just stepping into an airport these days—and a lot more pleasant than driving, overnight rail routes make for increasingly smarter alternatives to cars and planes, turning the journey to your destination into an experience in itself.

While Europe is leading the pack when it comes to taking you from A to B as you rest peacefully in your sleeper car, the US isn’t lagging that far behind. Several lines have in fact stepped up their game in recent years in terms of comfort and on-board services, offering travelers anything from plush beds to dedicated attendants and roomy sleeping quarters.

Here are five sleeper trains that are worth skipping highway tolls and airport lines for.

Coast Starlight

Linking Los Angeles to Seattle in around 34 hours, the Coast Starlight is one of Amtrak’s most scenic rail lines. The route delivers sweeping vistas of the Pacific Ocean and the lush Oregonian forest , with mountains, lakes, and thick woodlands as the main backdrop for most of the trip. You can gawk at them all from the gorgeous observation cars, which feature floor-to-ceiling windows and snug seats to while away the hours and snap plenty of pictures.

Come nighttime, the Coast Starlight’s sleeper cars ensure all the zzzs you need with roomettes, bedrooms, and one family bedroom to choose from (if you book the sleeper car, you also have access to the Amtrak Metropolitan Lounge before departure, which is a nice plus). While the smaller roomettes have outside toilets and showers, the bigger accommodations feature an ensuite bathroom for extra comfort, and more space to stretch your legs. Regardless of size, all of them grant access to the restaurant-style dining car for dinner, breakfast, and lunch—all included in your ticket—as well as complimentary coffee to keep you energized throughout the journey.

Top tip: Travel in the summer to get the most daylight, and make sure to take advantage of the early morning fresh-air stops in Oregon after your night onboard. You’ll feel restored in no time.

California Zephyr

At 2,438 miles and almost 52 hours of overall travel time (that’s three days and two nights), the California Zephyr is Amtrak’s second longest route, and the very definition of a long-distance rail journey. Riding from Chicago to Emeryville/San Francisco, you’ll roll through Illinois, Nebraska, Colorado, Utah , Nevada, and California—passing by verdant plains and the Rocky Mountain range, across arid countryside and the snow-capped Sierra Nevada. The whole trip is basically a deep dive into the natural beauty of the United States, and one of those experiences every train aficionado should try at least once in their lifetime.

There are plenty of places to stop and visit on the way—you can get off in Denver and explore the Rocky Mountain National Park or spend a few days in Salt Lake City—but should you choose to stay onboard for the whole ride, you’ll be in for a treat.

With roomettes, bedrooms, bedroom suites, family bedrooms, and one accessible bedroom spread across two levels of its sleeper cars, the California Zephyr has a wealth of sleeping options to cater all needs. All of them come with complimentary meals, dedicated cabin attendants, lounge access in Chicago, and priority boarding, while restrooms and showers are either within the car or ensuite, depending on the room category. The upper-level quarters offer better views and sell out fast, though if you suffer from motion sickness, the lower accommodations might be a better fit.

Besides the sleeping arrangements, however, it’s waking up to the Great Plains and winding through the Rockies and then the Sierra Nevada that’s truly special. Just make sure to always have your camera ready.

Texas Eagle

Another cool way to travel from Chicago to California— Los Angeles , to be exact—by train rather than plane? The Texas Eagle. Amtrak’s longest route (and the longest in America), this three-night, 65-hour journey follows a path first established by the Pacific Railway in 1948, passing some pretty amazing sights: from the Ozarks to Little Rock along the Mississippi River, then into the vast expanse of the Texan countryside.

There are stops in Dallas and Austin along the route, though really, it’s the sheer grandness of the Lone State’s topography—a never-ending mix of remote small towns and rural settlements, wide-open fields and swamps—that’s the trip’s biggest draw.

That, and the fact you can watch it all from compact-to-spacious sleeping quarters, which range from roomettes to suites and feature perks like turndown service, full meals in the dining car for the entire duration of the ride, and coffee, juice, and daily newspaper delivered every morning to your door.

In-room amenities include outlets to keep your electronics charged, lighting and climate controls, and a closet for your clothes (there are also soap and towels if you’re in the higher room categories), as well as an attendant call button should you have any extra needs. If you want to stretch your legs, the Sightseer lounge, with swivel seat, wraparound windows, and a beverage and snack service, is the place to go—and the best spot to meet like-minded travelers to share the journey with.

Rocky Mountaineer

Rocky Mountaineer

Ok, so the Rocky Mountaineer doesn’t technically have a sleeper car. The private company that runs it is also not American, but Canadian—though one of its trips, the “Rockies to the Red Rocks,” takes place in the States and connects Moab, Utah to Denver, Colorado.

Still, the fact that this luxury rail journey includes overnight stopovers at stylish hotels qualifies it as an excellent alternative to any flight, in our opinion. All the more so when Moab and Denver are actually quite close: Much better to opt for the slow way rather than create unnecessary CO2 emissions , right?

The US-based route takes travelers on a four-day/three-night adventure across the two mountain states—you’ll spend two full days onboard—snaking through rugged canyons and natural archways, awe-inspiring deserts and the majestic Colorado Rockies.

Accommodations include the four-star Hoodoo Moab, Curio Collection by Hilton in Utah and the hip Rally Hotel or Crawford Hotel in Denver —depending on which direction you’re going—with a less splurgy but equally comfortable option in Glenwood Springs, Colorado.

If you want to extend the fun, the Rocky Mountaineer also offers a selection of curated packages to start or end your trip in Las Vegas or Salt Lake City.

New York and Chicago are close enough to consider forever ditching flights and choosing a scenic train ride to travel between them instead—at least when you’re in no rush to reach either city.

The best rail journey for the task is the Cardinal, which connects the two in 26 hours and 30 minutes and runs three times a week.

The line offers some of the most beautiful scenery in the eastern US, rolling past the Blue Ridge Mountains, Allegheny range, and the Shenandoah Valley. You’ll wind through the New River Gorge and West Virginia’s wild white-water rivers before reaching the banks of the grand Ohio River, rolling by the quaint towns of Ashland and Maysville all the way to Cincinnati and Indianapolis—this is the only Amtrak route that stops in both metropolises—and, at last, Chicago.

Private roomettes and bedrooms—which include a flexible dining service in their rate—promise comfort and a blissful night’s sleep before you reach your final destination, while a café open to all passengers keeps everyone fueled up for the entire trip.

Unsurprisingly, the Cardinal is pretty popular in the summer and fall, meaning early bookings are highly recommended. Our advice: Treat yourself to a bedroom or suite. Both have an in-room sink, restroom, and shower, and larger abodes to hunker down in than the smaller roomettes. Got a bike or a pet with you? This train allows both—just check the guidelines beforehand.

A first-timer's guide to traveling on a sleeper train

Sleeper trains are making a welcome comeback and it’s easy to see why; they’re more environmentally-friendly and sustainable than air travel, as well as being a fun and, often, comfortable way of traveling.

However, if it’s your first time on a sleeper train, you might have questions about bookings, berths and breakfast. Avid train traveler Monisha Rajesh breaks down everything you need to know before boarding your first overnight train.

A sleeper train cabin, with two small bunks on the right-hand wall and a window looking out at the passing scenery

What kind of seat should I book?

Whichever country you’re traveling in, familiarize yourself with the different classes of accommodations offered by each service to suit your needs and budget. On America’s Amtrak the majority of travelers buy tickets in coach class where seats are wide and reclining with plenty of legroom. However, you’ll need to pack a blanket and neck pillow to have a restful night. Private roomettes contain two face-to-face seats that convert to upper and lower berths at night, and bedrooms offer the same number of berths with twice the space. Prices vary wildly depending on when you’re traveling, so book as far in advance as possible to find the cheapest tickets.

In Europe, you’ll find couchettes and sleepers: the former are six- or four-berth compartments with bunks you make up yourself, and the latter feature pre-made beds, washbasins, and on some routes, private showers and toilets. Most countries’ rail operators will show clear images on their websites of what to expect, and again it’s best to book early to find good rates. Women travelers are usually assigned spaces together but you can always call the operator directly to ensure this will be the case.

What rail pass should I get?

If you’re traveling on more than one or two sleepers within a few days, consider a rail pass. Amtrak’s 30-day USA Rail pass gives you 10 rides for $499 and Europe’s Interrail pass offers seven days of travel in the same month for €286. You have to pay a small fee to reserve a berth, but a pass often proves more cost-effective than buying individual tickets – and allows daytime hops too.

When booking the night train, what should I consider?

Faster trains aren't always better. Consider what time your train arrives at the destination. If you’re pulling into an unfamiliar city at 6am you might not want to wander around with luggage while waiting for a 3pm check-in, so research what storage facilities there are at the other end or see if an early self-check-in is available at your accommodations. If not, consider taking a slower night train that arrives at a more convenient time of day.

What happens when crossing borders?

Crossing borders at night might sound exciting and romantic but, in reality, it’s a hassle. Expect to be woken for both passport and customs checks on both sides and occasionally asked to disembark to have luggage scanned. For cross-border travel, a daytime service is much kinder on the soul.

What do I pack for a sleeper service?

Pack as lightly as possible. You’ll most likely have to heave your bag into overhead racks or wedge it under berths, so be economical with your space. Bring a small hotel-sized bottle of shower gel for handwashing – no one wants to rewrap a bar of soap – and a flannel. Don’t pack water wipes, which are bad for the environment and often end up falling straight onto the tracks if flushed down toilets. It’s always safer to bring your own toilet roll and make sure it’s easily accessible at night.

Wear slip-on shoes so you don't have to fumble in the dark with laces or have them trailing along a train floor. For similar reasons dress in stretchy leggings or baggy yoga pants, something with tapered ankles that won’t pick up dirt.

Temperatures on board trains can extend from one extreme to another: don’t be fooled into thinking you’ll freeze on board the Trans-Siberian in winter, the heaters are on full blast and most passengers wander around in vests and sliders. Begin with a vest and add layers up to a comfortable hooded sweatshirt in case it gets chilly, and bring a pair of thick bed socks.

Pack a silk sleeper sheet. They come in compact palm-sized pouches and work well as an extra layer of insulation in winter and are wonderfully cool in summer. They also do a good job of protecting you from insect bites.

If you’re a light sleeper or not used to after-dark chatter or the brightness of early mornings, you might want to invest in a pair of soft silicone ear plugs and an eye mask for a better night’s sleep. Finally, load books onto an e-reader and take a portable power charger for your phone.

A train rounds a bend in scenic countryside

What are the on-board rules?

There are rules to follow! If a sign indicates lights out at 9pm then follow the lead of your companions. Use your reading light and if you want to make phone calls or send messages then go out into the vestibule so as not to disturb others. Avoid using the toilet when the train is parked at stations as waste often falls onto the tracks making it unpleasant for passengers on the platform.

Which is better, a lower berth or an upper berth?

During the day the lower berths are used as seats for all members of a compartment so don’t have a lie-in if everyone is awake. It’s antisocial and the berth must be stowed away. For that reason it's best to book an upper berth which means you can go up whenever you like to nap or read, and you can stay there for as long as you want in the morning.

Can I buy food on board?

Check if there’s a dining car on board but always pack food just in case the galley is closed for any reason. Instant noodles, bananas, biscuits and cereal bars will keep you going, with cheese and deli meats perfectly fine if they’re eaten on the first evening. If you’re staying at a hotel the night before, clear out the tea bags, coffee and sugar sachets and make sure to carry money in small denominations for drinks, snacks and tipping staff.

Use food and drink to break the ice. Train travel in Asia in particular is a convivial affair with families pulling out everything, from tightly rolled chapatis with fried potato on trains in India to homemade mantou buns and fried fish in China , which they will usually offer fellow passengers. Try to return the gesture even if it’s just to share some nuts or boiled sweets.

What are the best night train journeys for first-timers?

Among my personal favorite routes are:

  • Mumbai–Howrah Duronto Express:  This high-speed overnight service makes minimal stops. Fully air-conditioned with wide berths, bottle holders and LED light fittings, the trains provide a clean and comfortable service. Hop aboard in  Mumbai  and bed down at around 10pm, sleeping through with the peace of mind that there will be few brakes and jerks and no loud new voices looking for their berths.  Book tickets with 12Go .
  • Sunset Limited from New Orleans to Los Angeles:  The oldest named train in the US, the Sunset Limited is Amtrak’s southernmost route, pulling passengers from New Orleans , through  Louisiana ’s bayous and the raw red expanse of  Texas , before winding up through  New Mexico  and  Arizona  and sailing into  LA  at first light.  Book tickets with Amtrak .

Setting out on a long-haul train journey has been dubbed ‘land cruising’ for good reason. The unique mode of transportation, not just the destination, is the focus—similar to ocean and river cruises. Traditionally, rail “cruises” include at least two overnight stays onboard, with a private compartment in a sleeping car.

If you’re willing to pay north of $1,000 (per person) per night, you can find lots of ultra-luxe rail excursions. With private train operators such as Belmond and Golden Eagle, you can ride in refurbished heritage cars or new purpose-built cars, many including compartments with private showers, along with elaborate lounge cars and opulent dining cars. These trips can be up to two weeks long—and can cost a fortune.

Train Journeys That Won’t Break the Bank

But a few long-distance train journeys, operated by regular railway companies, provide a “land cruise” option at prices comparable to those of ocean cruises. Here are a few of the best that run for at least two nights, and offer two-person sleeping compartments.

USA: Amtrak, California Zephyr Train Journey

Amtrak california zephyr train journey

Amtrak runs four train journeys that run two nights: The California Zephyr between Chicago and Emeryville (near San Francisco), the Empire Builder between Chicago and either Portland or Seattle, the Southwest Chief between Chicago and Los Angeles, and the Sunset Limited between New Orleans and Los Angeles. Of the four, the consensus seems to be that the California Zephyr provides the best scenic option, with mostly-daylight travel through both the Colorado Rockies and the California Sierras, in both directions. The trip runs daily, and takes about 52 hours.

Amtrak fares are capacity driven, meaning that cheap seats sell out early. For a test trip in mid-April, a two-person roomette on the California Zephyr is $656, but fares at other times can be close to double that figure. The roomette has two bunked beds, (one is an upper, so at least one person must be nimble enough to climb up the small ladder); the room has a washstand, and the shower is at the end of the car. The fare includes all meals. Amtrak offers minor senior and other discounts, but only for the base rail rate; discounts do not apply to sleeper accommodations.

Canada: VIA Rail, The Canadian

via rail train journey canadian rockies

The top land cruise in North America, VIA Rail’s The Canadian , runs twice weekly from October 14 to May 1, and three times weekly during the summer. The most scenic portion of the three-night, 82-hour trip is riding through the Canadian Rockies, with a bit more daylight viewing eastbound rather than westbound. Two-person cabins on VIA Rail are bigger than roomettes on Amtrak, with a lower and upper bed and a toilet; the Canadian also includes some one-person cabins. The fare for a sample trip in mid-April is $2,883 for a couple, including all meals. Discounted tickets are typically available as last-minute deals, at around $2,000 USD for two people.

The Canadian also offers a few “Prestige” cabins that include a full-size double bed, a private washroom with a shower, and other high-end benefits. Fares—never discounted, says VIA Rail—are currently around at $7,440, on a par with some private luxury train journeys.

Europe: The Paris-Moscow Express

Nice france train journey

Europe’s premier two-night trip is currently the 39-hour Paris-Moscow Express , operating once a week. Early spring prices for a couple are $2,938 in a deluxe VIP cabin with a private shower, or $1,207 in a four-person first-class sleeper compartment that you can usually limit to two people by paying a supplement. These fares do not include meals, and trips depart Paris on Thursdays and Moscow on Tuesdays. A similar train operates weekly between Nice and Moscow.

If you’re looking for spectacular mountain, river valley, or coastline scenery, this isn’t the trip for you. It’s mainly plains and rolling hills, but you’re unlikely to geto to see this part of the world in any other way. The train journey passes through France, Germany, Poland, Belarus, and Russia (you’ll need appropriate visas for Belarus and Russia) and is operated by Russian Railways.

China: Beijing to Lhasa Train Journey

lhasa tibet train journey

Although China, like Europe and Japan, is focusing on developing an extensive high-speed network, it’s big enough that overnight travel is still necessary on many travel routes. And among them, the 40-hour trip from Beijing to Lhasa, Tibet, is the most outstanding and is available via China Highlights . It features the highest railway in the world, reaching an altitude of 16,640 feet, and ending at 11,950 feet at Lhasa. Needless to say, the train passes through some unique scenery. The train is equipped to provide oxygen to passengers, which many will need at that elevation. So, if you have a problem with high altitudes, this train journey might not be for you.

The two-night trip runs daily from Beijing; through trips from other main Chinese cities run to Lhasa less frequently. The best accommodations are in a four-person cabin “soft” sleeper, which costs $195 per person. Fares do not include meals, but the train carries a dining car. This is far from a “luxury” trip even by regular-rail standards, but its unique route makes it worthwhile.

Russia: A Rossiya Train Journey

Rossiya russian train journey

A long-haul train of superlatives, the pricey trans-Siberian is the world’s longest and most varied single-train rail journey: It crosses almost all of Russia, passing mountains, rivers, the world’s deepest lake, and just about any other kind of scenery you can imagine. To do it in luxury, the Golden Eagle makes its 15-day trip four times each way in 2018, with opulent private rooms, high-end dining, and extended stops and excursions along the way—starting at $31,000 per couple.

For something more economical, the Russian Railway Rossiya train journey takes six nights, with a few short stops to stretch your legs. For a land cruise, you’ll want the top accommodation, a two-berth compartment, for which the Russian Railway website currently posts $767 per person, or $1,534 per couple (for travel in mid-March).

Australia: The Indian Pacific Train Journey

Great southern rail train journey 2

Australia’s long-haul rail system is something of an outlier: Trains operated by a private company, Great Southern Rail , are the only passenger services on three main long-haul routes, including the country’s two longest. The Indian Pacific operates weekly three-night trips each way between Sydney and Perth, and the Ghan operates two weekly two-night trips each way between Adelaide and Darwin. A third trip, the Overland , is a day trip between Adelaide and Melbourne.

The Indian Pacific crosses mountains and deserts, with several off-train excursion stops along the way: at Broken Hill, Adelaide city, and Nullarbor. It’s the only long-haul rail trip to cross an entire continent completely, shore-to-shore. It also traverses the world’s longest stretch of absolutely straight rail line—some 297 miles across the Nullarbor (“no trees”) Plain.

For your land cruise, you will want to travel in Platinum service, with large cabins that feature either a double bed or twins (not bunks), private toilet and shower facilities, in-cabin breakfast, an exclusive dining car, plus a bunch of other special services. The price for travel in mid-April is $3,400 per person ($6,800 for a couple) including all meals. Twin cabins in the less-opulent Gold Class provide upper and lower beds and a private shower and toilet (in a smaller space than Platinum) with an exclusive dining car. The fare for travel in mid-April is $2,342 per person, including all meals and beverages. The Ghan offers a similar service, with an extended excursion stop in Alice Springs.

Moscow to Nice Sleeper Train – Russian Railways

Moscow to Nice sleeper train, Russian Railways

The Moscow to Nice sleeper train is one of the longest rail routes in the world, stretching 2,607 km across eight countries – in fact, it’s hard to believe it’s a railway line at all. The train has been operating since 2010, the first railway line connecting Russia and the French Riviera since the days of Tsarist Russia. Now run by Russian Railways it aims to recreate the romance of the golden age of travel, departing Russia’s capital Moscow for the glitzy French Riviera on a journey that takes around 50 hours.

In 2015, to mark the 150 th anniversary of the railway connection between the two countries, the train was considerably upgraded, and passengers now enjoy a rather premium experience. Changing restaurant cars, incredible views and a nostalgia for old-world travel all make this rail route a definite bucket-list journey.

Prices from: £285 Departing from: Moscow Journey length: 1 night

Moscow russia

Moscow to Nice sleeper train route

During summer, the Moscow to Nice train runs once a week on a Thursday, departing from Moscow’s Belorussky station at 18:17 and pulling into Nice two days later at 18:30. The journey takes an average of 51 hours and 13 minutes, crossing through Russia, Belarus, Poland, Czech Republic, Austria, Italy and Monaco before finally entering France. The scenery outside is pretty fantastic, and guests will get to travel through Moscow’s suburbs, Minsk, cross the former iron curtain from Czech Republic into Austria, gaze at the snowy peaks of northern Italy and finally the pastel-hued ports of the Mediterranean. The train also runs eastbound, leaving Nice on Sunday mornings at 09:29 and arriving in Moscow two days later at 11:44.

Moscow to Nice sleeper train

The train is made up of three deluxe carriages, six 1st class carriages and one second-class carriage. The only other carriages open to the public are the restaurant cars, of which the train always has two of. Between Moscow and Brest they’re provided by Russian Railways and between Warsaw and Nice they are operated by Polish Railways. Washrooms and toilets are available at the end of each sleeper carriage.

Moscow to Nice sleeper train

Cabins on the Moscow to Nice sleeper train

Travelling over two nights the Moscow to Nice train is well-equipped with comfortable sleeper carriages, and passengers can choose from deluxe 1 st class ticket, standard 1st class or 2 nd class ticket. Deluxe compartments have two berths on an upper and lower level, and have pleasing mahogany fixtures and amenities like toiletries, a dressing gown, flat-screen TV and DVD player. Standard 1 st compartments are also double occupancy, but both beds are lower berth due to the accommodation not having a private shower room.

Finally, 2 nd class accommodation sleeps four passengers, two lower and two upper. All carriages on the train are air-conditioned, have hotel-style key cards and have access to showers – located in each sleeper carriage for passengers in standard 1 st and 2 nd class.

Russian railways moscow to Nice train

Food and drink

Dining on the Moscow to Nice train is part of the excitement, as the train gets a different restaurant car depending on its location. Journeys start with a Russian-run restaurant car, being replaced by a Polish car where breakfasts include scrambled eggs, meats and cheeses. Other dining highlights include meals like camembert with salad and pork schnitzel.

Deluxe 1st Class ticket holders have breakfast included, but breakfast and other hot meals and snacks are available to purchase from the dining car. Menus are all in Russian and English and the staff speak Russia, Polish and English. It’s worth stocking up on packet soups and noodles and bringing a mug and spoon, as unlimited boiling water is available for free.

There is no dress code on the train, and travelling is a casual affair. Remember to pack for two different climates and bring comfy, modest clothing for sleeping (especially if sharing a sleeper compartment with strangers). Trains are fully heated so no need for warm clothes indoors.

What’s included

Deluxe 1 st class passengers get breakfast included, whereas 1 st and 2 nd class passengers just get accommodation included.

Pros and cons

Crossing eight countries and traversing between two completely different cities, this is a truly amazing rail route once used by the aristocrats of imperial Russia. The only con is the trip comes with a lot of paperwork. Passengers will need a Russian via and as the route crosses Belarus a Belarus transit visa is also needed complete this journey.

Train travel UK & Ireland...

Train travel in europe..., train travel in asia..., train travel in africa..., train travel in america..., train travel in australasia, visiting north korea.

Visas are not normally granted to foreign independent travellers to North Korea, only to visitors on an organised tour with a guide.  Several companies can arrange visits to North Korea.  Try Regent Holidays (in the UK) at www.regent-holidays.co.uk who can arrange group or individual tours to North Korea.  Also try www.juchetravelservices.com (a new London based agency), Koryo Tours (Beijing-based) at www.koryogroup.com , VNC Travel at www.vnc.nl (in the Netherlands). Each of these companies can book the Beijing-Pyongyang sleeper train and help with visas.  You may also find this webpage useful:  www.tripbase.com/c/northkorea/ .  Although talks are progressing, there are no trains (nor any access) across the border between North and South Korea.

small bullet point

Useful country information

Moscow to north korea.

There is a direct sleeping-car between Moscow and Pyongyang in North Korea twice a month provided by the North Korean Railways.

In addition there are two direct Russian sleeping-cars 4 times a month from Moscow to the North Korean border at Tumangan, with an onward connection by North Korean train to Pyongyang.  These sleeping-cars are attached to train 2, the Rossiya from Moscow as far as Ussuriysk, just short of Vladivostok, where they are detached and run onwards along the branch line to Tumangan.

All these sleeping-cars have kupé 4-berth compartments and spalny vagon 2-berth compartments.

Important :  The Moscow-Tumangan-Pyongyang route wasn't previously approved for foreigners to enter North Korea, but it is now approved for use by tourists booked with companies such as Koryo Tours, www.youngpioneertours.com or www.koreakonsult.com .  Previously, the only approved route for westerners was to take one of the two weekly Moscow-Beijing trains as shown on the Trans-Siberian page , then to take the Beijing to Pyongyang train as shown in the next section.

Update 2024 :  It's not clear whether these trains have resumed post-pandemic.

Fares:   Moscow to Pyongyang through ticket:  Bought through Real Russia, £524 in kupé (4-berth, 2nd class) or £817 in spalny vagon (2-berth, 1st class).  According to the Russian Railways website, the official fare is 410 Swiss Francs (about £285) in 2nd class 4-berth, 645 Swiss Francs (about £460) in 1st class 2-berth.

Visas:   You'll need to have your travel arranged through an agency that handles travel to North Korea, as only passengers on tour arrangements can get visas.  You'll need a Russian visa, obviously.  However, the train passes directly from Russia into North Korea, it does not pass through China, so no need for a Chinese visa.

However, this route may not currently be approved for foreigners to enter North Korea (this may change, so check with one of the travel agencies mentioned above).  Though at least one intrepid traveller has managed to reach North Korea this way, see Helmut Uttenthaler's account as http://vienna-pyongyang.blogspot.com .

Beijing to North Korea

The train has soft class 4-berth sleepers & restaurant car.  A restaurant meal costs around 5 euros.  This train is approved for European & other non-US foreigners but it's reported as not permitted for US citizens, if you're American please check.

Update 2024 :  The resumption of this train post-pandemic has not been confirmed.

Traveller's reports

Traveller David Eerdmans visited North Korea using the Beijing-Pyongyang train:  "...Using the train is very recommendable, because it gives a unique insight in the poor rural areas of North-Korea that are not otherwise shown to tourists (although the villages along the railway are probably still among the best there are in the country). You also pass the site of the large train explosion two years ago, which is still very visible.  The train usually consists of two through cars attached to respectively a Chinese and Korean train on both sides of the border (and on some days also a part from Moscow). The train is pretty comfortable and very comparable to the usual trains in China and Russia, although it's state was somewhat less. Track quality is horrible in North-Korea, with the train travelling very slowly.  Stations are in a very poor state of repair (and of course always spot a portrait of the Great or the Dear Leaders...sigh...). Delays are very frequent due to power outages.  There are, as you state, indeed two classes [subsequent report says only one, 4-berth].  Both are pretty similar and consist of 4-person compartments.  From Pyongyang, western tourists are only allowed on the Soft Sleeper, which is only used by foreigners, mostly Chinese [subsequent reports suggest there is no segregation]. From Beijing, you can also use the Hard Sleeper, which is also used by North-Koreans ...which creates about the only opportunity to speak with 'normal' North-Koreans without having a guide with you. On the way back from Pyongyang I also had an interesting conversation, because I shared the compartment with the Indian ambassador in North-Korea!  The through cars are fenced off from the rest of the train (!), so you can't use the restaurant car [although several other reports confirm that you can do so!].  In Korea, however, a meal can be brought to you by the car attendant [Note:  Regent Holidays report that meals in the restaurant car are included in the fare].  The quality of the food is pretty good considering the food shortages in the country.  Do expect dog meat however, which is actually quite tasty.  The border crossing is very slow, but not the pain I expected it to be.  The border officials are usually not too friendly, but not rude or intimidating.

North Korea - South Korea trains...

Although there have been talks, proposals an test runs, there is currently no service between North & South Korea, and the border remains closed.
