The Abu Dhabi Tourist Visa Explained – Rule Changes in 2022

On this page, we detail everything you need to know about tourist visas for Abu Dhabi and the UAE. Note that these visa rules apply no matter which Emirate you come in and out of.

We have updated this page following changes to the visa system in October 2022.

We have attempted to provide clear and accurate information; however, at the time of writing, some aspects of the new Visa system are not entirely clear during this transition period. This page will be amended as soon as more official information becomes available.

In addition to requiring a visa to enter the country as a tourist, please keep abreast of current COVID-19 requirements . As of 7 November, 2022, the Al Hosn “Green Pass” requirement was abolished .

Who needs to apply for a Tourist Visa?

Anyone not a GCC national or eligible for a visa on arrival (see list below) must apply for a visa in advance to visit the UAE.

You can apply either through your airline or UAE-registered tour operator for the appropriate visa.

  • Visa services from Etihad Airways
  • Visa Services offered by Emirates Airline
  • Visa services from Fly Dubai
  • Visa services from Air Arabia

A single entry transit visa for less than 48 hours is free, whilst of 4-day short-stay, visa costs 50AED.

A 30-day, single-entry visa costs in the region of 350 AED, depending on the service that you use to obtain it. Alternatively, a 60-day single-entry visa costs in the region of 650 AED. Both 30 and 60-day single-entry visit visas can be extended for a further 30 days for a fee of 960 AED.

Note that people under the age of 18 cannot apply for a tourist visa unless they are travelling with their parents.

Visa-Free Entry to the UAE

Citizens from  GCC Countries   do not need to apply for a visa on arrival to the UAE.

Countries eligible for Visa on Arrival

Upon landing at Abu Dhabi International Airport, simply make your way to immigration, where your visa will be issued.

These countries are currently eligible for a FREE visit visa on arrival to the UAE:

  • Czech Republic
  • Liechtenstein
  • Netherlands
  • New Zealand
  • People’s Republic of China
  • Republic of El Salvador
  • Republic of Mauritius
  • Saint Vincent and the Grenadines
  • South Korea
  • Switzerland
  • United Kingdom
  • United States of America
  • Vatican City

A visit visa for most of these countries lasts for 60 days and can be renewed for another 30 days twice. If you overstay a visit visa, the fine is 200 AED for the first day and 100 AED per day after that – see more below on overstays.

There is a 10-day grace period (this means that you won’t be fined for overstaying your visa until Day 70).

Note that the 26 countries in the Schengen Zone had previously been allowed to stay in the UAE for 90 days, although it is unclear whether this is still the case following the immigration reforms of October 2022.

Five-Year Multi-Visit Visa (New in 2022)

A five-year multi-visit visa is also available for the above countries, which allows the holder to stay in the UAE for up to 90 days in a row and up to 180 days per year.

In order to apply for this type of visa, you need to prove that you have USD 4,000 in your bank account (for at least six months prior to the visa application) and purchase UAE Health Insurance.

Citizens of India

There are specific rules applicable to Indian citizens,  which you can find here .

If you have any concerns, you should verify this information on the UAE Government website.

What happens if my tourist Visa has expired?

If your 60-day tourist visa to the UAE has expired, you have two options:

  • Free Etihad Stopover In Abu Dhabi; Are You Eligible in 2024?
  • What to Expect at Abu Dhabi International Airport AUH
  • Eid-al-Fitr Fireworks & Celebrations in Abu Dhabi 2024
  • Leave the country before your 10-day grace period expires (ie, by day 69)
  • Apply to Immigration and pay a fee to have your visit visa extended. It is currently understood that you are able to extend your 60-day visa by 30 days twice, giving you a maximum of 120 days in the UAE ( previously, you could keep renewing indefinitely by leaving the country and returning).

What is a Visa Run?

A Visa run is a common expression used for when you leave the country in order to re-enter and start a fresh visit visa immediately.

Most commonly, this is done on the UAE’s border with Oman as it is quite straightforward and inexpensive to cross by land, provided you have access to a car. We have a detailed guide on how the process works on our Dubai Travel Planner site . It is identical for Abu Dhabi, although there may be closer border crossing points to consider near Al Ain.

There is no need to do a visa run as visas can easily be renewed online, but it is still an option which helps combine costs with a trip to a neighbouring country.

Accidental overstays

It’s important to note if you leave the country during the first 60 days, your UAE Visa on Arrival will not renew upon re-entry. It’s a 60-day multi-entry Visa .  If you are travelling through Abu Dhabi, let’s say onward to Europe, then have a stopover in Abu Dhabi again, be very careful if that second stop sees you cross over from 60 days to 70 days.

Eg: You arrive in Abu Dhabi on 1 September, stay for a few days, and then fly on to Europe. You return to the UAE on 30 October.  You then spend two weeks in Abu Dhabi and fly out again on 12 November.

Even though you only stayed in the UAE for just over two weeks, your original 60-day visa was still valid on re-entry. You are considered to have overstayed your visit visa by 12 days as you did not leave the country, and it was not renewed during the 10-day grace period.

Road trip to Oman?

A good way to avoid this can be to include a trip to Oman with your Abu Dhabi trip!  Musandam is our favourite location for an overnight trip, although the closest crossing point from Abu Dhabi city is Al Ain; not only an amazing experience, but you can avoid any issues with overstaying your visa and receiving a fine by exiting the country between day 60 and day 69.

There are a few small costs involved, and depending on your nationality, you may need to apply for an e-visa in advance. Other than transportation, you have to pay an exit fee to the UAE, and a  tourist Visa entry fee to Oman, currently 5OR for a 10-day visit visa.

Re-entering the UAE, there are no charges on the Omani or UAE side, just stamping of your passports.

If you are travelling in a hire car, you will need to check that your insurance covers Oman and obtain a ’no objection certificate (NOC)’.

NB If you are looking to work in the UAE and become a resident, different visa categories will apply.  You may still be instructed by a future employer to enter on a tourist visa; then you will be changed across to the appropriate visa category in due course.

abu dhabi visit visa rules

There has never been a better time to move to Abu Dhabi with over 60 visa options available. Deciding which visa to apply for can be tricky, but understanding the requirements and your eligibility can make the process easier.

What is the Difference Between an Entry Permit and a Residence Visa?

Entry permit throughout.

An Entry Visa allows you to enter and stay in Abu Dhabi legally for a short period of time and can be granted for a number of reasons including employment, visits, tourism, medical treatment, missions and conferences. Most entry visas are valid for two months (60 days) but the duration depends on the type of Entry Visa. For example, entry visas for transit allow you to stay in the country for only four days, while entry visas for employment allow you to stay in the country for 60 days during which you must obtain a residence visa or apply for an extension.

All visas can be extended for 30 days twice without needing to leave and re-enter the country for renewal. If you fail to extend your entry visa and overstay, you will have to pay a fine of AED 100 per day, which is calculated from 10 days after the expiration date of the visa. The rules for extension do not apply to certain groups including: visitors and tourists who are residents in GCC countries; residents accompanying GCC nationals; those on special entry permits; and those on 96-hour permits for special missions.

  • Residence Visa

A Residence Visa is issued to people who are already in the country after entering the UAE on an Entry or Tourist Visa. It allows you to live and work in Abu Dhabi and can last from one to three years depending on the sponsor. Long term residence visas are available for five or 10 years subject to certain conditions.

Do You Need a Visa to Enter the UAE?

Yes. Coming to Abu Dhabi requires obtaining an entry visa , which allows you to enter and stay in the emirate legally for a short period of time. Conditions for obtaining an Entry Visa differ based on nationality, the purpose of the visit and the duration of stay. Before you apply for an entry visa, check if you are eligible for visa-free entry or can receive a visa on arrival.

Gulf Cooperation Countries (GCC)

Visa on arrival, pre-arranged entry visa, sponsorship, valid documents, no restrictions.

Citizens of GCC countries do not require an Entry Visa or to be sponsored by a UAE national or resident in order to enter the UAE. They simply need to provide their passport or national ID issued by a GCC country at the point of entry. The validity of entry permits for GCC residents is 30 days.

Citizens of these countries are not required to apply for an Entry Visa prior to arrival. Instead, an entry visa is issued automatically upon arrival and it is valid for 30 days with a 10-day period for extension.

The list is subject to change; therefore it is advisable to check with the UAE embassy abroad or the airline before travelling to Abu Dhabi.

Anyone who does not have the privilege of visa-free entry or visa on arrival must apply for an entry visa ahead of travel.

You need a sponsor to apply for your entry permit. The sponsor can be:

  • Tourism establishments
  • Companies based in Abu Dhabi
  • Individuals (UAE national or an expatriate who is already living in the country with a valid residence visa)

You must have a valid passport with at least six months validity from the date of entry.

You must not have been previously deported or banned from entering the UAE. A visa ban prohibits a person from entering the country or taking up a new job. If either of these conditions apply, you must obtain special permission to re-enter the UAE. Apply for an entry visa

How Much Does a Visa Cost?

Overstaying your visa, overstaying a tourist or visit visa, overstaying a residence visa, modifying visa status.

Visa fees vary by type and usually take three to four business days to process. Urgent processing can be requested for an additional fee of AED 100. Visit smartservices.icp.gov.ae

Visas are granted with a start and end date. Visa holders who stay beyond the expiration date of their visas and fail to obtain an extension are subject to financial penalties.

Tourist Visa and Visit Visa holders have a 10 day grace period to obtain an extension. If a tourist or visitor stays beyond the grace period, fines will accrue as follows:

Residents have a 30 day grace period to get a new Residence Visa or leave the country. If a resident stays beyond the grace period, fines will accrue as follows:

Holders of all visa types can modify their visa and transfer it into a Residence Visa while staying in the country. Applicants must meet the requirements for a residence visa, pay a fee of AED 500 in lieu of leaving and complete the process before the entry visa expires to avoid penalty.

Entry requirements.

This advice reflects the UK government’s understanding of current rules for people travelling on a full ‘British citizen’ passport from the UK, for the most common types of travel.

The authorities in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) set and enforce entry rules. If you’re not sure how these requirements apply to you contact the UAE Embassy in the UK .

COVID-19 rules

There are no COVID-19 testing or vaccination requirements for travellers entering UAE.

Passport validity requirements

To enter the UAE, your passport must have an ‘expiry date’ at least 6 months after the date you arrive in the UAE.

If you have a residence permit, your passport’s expiry date must be at least 3 months after the date you arrive in the UAE.

If you’re travelling through the UAE and not passing through immigration, your passport must have an expiry date at least 3 months after the date you will transit.

Visa requirements

You can get a visitor or tourist visa issued free of charge when you arrive in the UAE. You do not need to apply in advance of travel. Your passport will be stamped with the visa as you go through immigration. It will be valid for up to 40 days.

You can be fined for overstaying your visa. If you want to extend your stay, contact:

  • for Dubai: General Directorate of Residency and Foreigners Affairs
  • for the rest of the UAE: Federal Authority for Identity and Citizenship

Living and working in the UAE

If you have entered Dubai on a visit visa and want to start working, you must get a probationary work permit valid for up to 3 months from the Ministry of Labour. If you are caught working on a visit visa, you could get a fine or a prison sentence, and you risk deportation.

You risk arrest if you have lived or worked in the UAE and return when:

  • your previous visa is not in order - for example if you did not cancel your work visa
  • you have outstanding debts
  • you have an unresolved legal issue

If you have any doubt about your status before returning to the UAE seek advice from a local lawyer .

If you have any questions on the validity or expiry of your visa, or on how to work or stay in the UAE, contact UAE Immigration directly:

  • for Dubai: General Directorate of Residency and Foreigners Affairs
  • from the UK: UAE Embassy in the UK

Residence visas

If you apply for a residence visa, you will have to take a blood test. If you test positive for any communicable diseases like HIV, hepatitis or tuberculosis, you may be detained and then deported, without appeal. Check the health and fitness requirements on the  United Arab Emirates’ government portal .

When applying for a UAE residence visa, it is common practice for your sponsor’s representative to give their details as the contact information on your application. When your residence visa is issued, update these details using ICP Smart System services . These details are used by the local authorities when they contact you.

Previous travel to Israel

UAE immigration authorities have advised that British nationals with valid or expired Israeli visas or stamps in their passports should not face any difficulties entering the UAE as long as they do not intend to work. If you do intend to work, further checks may be required and there is a risk that entry may be refused.

If you are a British-Israeli dual national and have any concerns about entering the UAE, contact the UAE Embassy in the UK .

Leaving the UAE

If you are subject to a travel ban, involved in legal proceedings, have unpaid debt or are a child subject to a custody dispute, you may be prevented from leaving the UAE.

Vaccination requirements

At least 8 weeks before your trip, check the vaccinations and certificates you need on TravelHealthPro .

Customs rules

There are strict rules about goods that can be brought into and taken out of UAE . You must declare anything that may be prohibited or subject to tax or duty.

It is illegal to bring pork products or pornography into the UAE. Videos, books, and magazines may be subject to scrutiny and may be censored.

Medication

There are strict rules about what medications can be brought into the UAE. You will need approval from the UAE authorities to bring in medication that the UAE classes as narcotic, psychotropic, controlled or semi-controlled.

You must request approval in advance to bring in medication. Apply online using the electronic application form on the UAE Ministry of Health website. The UAE authorities advise that applications are normally processed within 5 working days.

If you arrive in the UAE without evidence of prior approval, the medication will not be allowed into the UAE and you may be prosecuted. For information on controlled medicines or the process for obtaining permission, contact the UAE Ministry of Health on [email protected] or call +971 800 11111.

In all cases, there are limits on the amount of medication that can be brought into the UAE legally. The Ministry of Health advise you can bring up to 3 months’ supply of medication as a visitor, reduced to one month’s supply if the medication is included in the list requiring approval.

You do not need to complete this approval process if you are only transiting airside through a UAE airport and will not pass through UAE immigration to enter the UAE.

Abu Dhabi and Dubai are welcoming tourists again after suspending visas at the start of the Covid-19 pandemic.

Dubai reopened its borders to visitors in July, while Abu Dhabi and the other emirates began issuing tourist visas in late September, after a six-month hiatus.

But the procedures to enter Abu Dhabi and Dubai are different.  The National explains what they are.

Flying to Dubai

The first step is to check whether a visa is required to enter the Emirates, which can be done here .

Emirates airline advises passengers to double-check the departure requirements in the country they are leaving from. That information can be checked here .

Previously, almost all tourists and residents coming to Dubai were required to have a PCR swab test in their country of origin – and show the results – before they boarded their flight.

But the rules were updated on October 26, removing the need for people from 56 countries to take Covid-19 tests before they fly.

However, dozens more still require “double testing”, meaning they need to show a negative Covid on check-in, and then be screened again on arrival in the emirate, quarantining in hotels or homes until the results are ready.

Tests must be a polymerase chain reaction (PCR) swab tests. Results from antibody tests and home testing kits will not be accepted.

All those required to take a test must present an official, printed certificate in English or Arabic, at the time of check-in. SMS and digital certificates will not be accepted on the flight.

The test result must be negative to board.

Those transiting through Dubai may not have to take a PCR test before they fly, unless the final destination requires it .

The UAE issued a list of approved laboratories where travellers can be tested. Passengers can also visit another lab that is trusted or certified in the country of origin.

Visitors flying from India, Pakistan or Bangladesh must, however, be tested by one of the UAE's approved labs, which can be found here .

All travellers must complete a health declaration form at check-in. It can be found here .

If Dubai is their final destination, passengers will be asked to complete a quarantine undertaking form, which will be handed out on the plane. It must be handed to Dubai Health Authority staff on arrival.

Dubai does not require passengers to quarantine in the emirate if they tested negative for Covid-19.

Children under the age of 12 and passengers who have a moderate or severe disability are exempt from taking Covid-19 tests.

Certain passengers, depending on where they are flying from, may be required to take a test on arrival.

Anyone who takes a PCR test on arrival must remain at the hotel or residence they are staying at until they receive the result. If it is positive, they will be required to isolate, according to Dubai Health Authority guidelines.

Visitors must also download the Covid19 – DXB Smart App.

Tourists travelling to Abu Dhabi from Dubai

Tourists must quarantine for 14 days in Abu Dhabi. The quarantine period is monitored using a wristband.

However, the time spent in quarantine, and consequently wearing the wristband, is reduced by the number of days the tourist has been in the UAE already.

This means if a tourist landed in Dubai six days earlier, they will only have to quarantine for eight days in Abu Dhabi.

Anyone arriving in Dubai who travels directly to Abu Dhabi must provide a negative PCR test result, which has been issued within the previous 96 hours.

They must also take a diffractive phase interferometry (DPI) test at the border, according to Emirates.

They will be fitted with a wristband at the border. A second test, taken after 12 days, is mandatory. If the result is negative, the wristband can be removed after 14 days.

Anyone who has been in the country for longer than 14 days is not required to quarantine on arrival in Abu Dhabi.

However, they must take a DPI test at the border and take a PCR test by the sixth consecutive day in Abu Dhabi if they plan to stay longer than six days. Financial penalties apply if the tests are not taken.

Tourists departing from Dubai

PCR tests are only necessary if they are mandated by the country a passenger is travelling to. Requirements can be checked at the Emirates website here .

There is a list of authorised laboratories in Dubai here .

Tourists flying directly to Abu Dhabi

Anyone flying to Abu Dhabi is required to take a PCR test before they board and must present the result at check-in.

People who have tested positive will not be permitted to board.

Everyone flying to Abu Dhabi, including children, must take another test on arrival and quarantine for 14 days in a government centre, a hotel or a person's home.

Authorities will decide the location.

If the traveller quarantines in a hotel or at home, they will be fitted with an electronic wristband to ensure they remain there. This will be carried out free of charge.

Tourists who quarantine in a hotel must not leave their room at all during the period.

A second PCR test must be taken on the 12th day at the tourist's own cost. A representative from Abu Dhabi Public Health Centre will contact them to make an appointment at an Abu Dhabi Health Services Company (Seha) centre.

If the result is negative, the wristband can be removed at a Seha centre on the 14th day.

Anyone who fails to follow the procedures will face a fine.

Tourists leaving Abu Dhabi

Anyone flying out of the capital on Etihad is required to take a PCR test. This must be conducted no more than 96 hours prior to departure.

Etihad Airways tickets booked for travel between October 1 and December 31 this year include the cost of this test, with the exception of passengers travelling to China.

The tests can be conducted at Life Medical Diagnostic Centre's network of collection centres between 48 and 96 hours before departure.

First-class and business-class passengers can choose to have the test in their own home by booking through the company's website here .

UAE's visiting visa rules: What has changed, what should travellers keep with them

 alt=

Dubai: The latest guidelines regarding the UAE visiting visa have become a matter of concern for many who were planning a trip to the country. Affi Ahammad, MD of Smart Travels said that the passengers should keep all the documents ready at hand to be produced at the airport, to ensure hassle-free travel. The guidelines state that the passengers arriving in the country on a visiting visa should carry: 1) A valid return ticket 2) Address of friends or relatives with whom they plan to stay. It's better if they travel from India with the relative with whom they are going to stay 3) Passport with a validity of six months 4) Copy of their Emirates ID 5) 5000 dirhams in account or equivalent amount as currency

Meanwhile, the guideline that one should carry a bank statement for the last six months isn’t strict. Also, if not 5000 dirhams, they should have at least 3000 dirhams with them or possess a credit card with the stipulated limit. Rules relaxed in 2020, but... The above rules existed earlier too, but they were relaxed in September 2020. The directives were repealed when the travel agencies expressed concern that it would disappoint job aspirants who wish to come to the UAE and that it would adversely affect the businesses. However, now, many are troubled that the government has made it stricter again. Many passengers, including Malayalis, who failed to fulfil these guidelines or produce necessary travel documents were detained at the Indian airports and were not allowed to board the planes.

Some others who managed to land in Dubai were reportedly detained by the immigration authorities there. The government’s move to make the visit visa guidelines stricter has quashed the dreams of many youngsters who were eager to find a good job in the UAE. People who belong to families that aren’t financially sound have struggled to arrange the money for purchasing visas and air tickets. Now, they can't arrange Rs 68,000 more so that they could adhere to the directives. In the beginning, the passengers were reportedly detained at the Dubai airport. However, now, checking has been made stricter at the Indian airports too. It was reported that a few passengers who hail from the Idukki district in Kerala were detained like this and sent back to India. But, the Dubai immigration authorities haven’t issued any official statement regarding this.

No new vacancies, boost for tourism The number of job seekers who arrive on visiting visas has gone up significantly, especially after the COVID-19 outbreak. Since the vacant posts were filled as soon as the pandemic subsided and the financial sector was recovering slowing, new vacancies weren’t created. Currently, hundreds of job aspirants are in UAE, trying hard to land a job. Among them, most Keralites are highly educated and experienced too. Inspections are conducted regularly at the airports in Dubai to ensure the safety of the passengers. Lots of cases have been reported for overstaying. Experts in the travel and tourism industry observe that the latest actions by the authorities would only boost the tourism sector in the Emirates. They say that strict inspection would make the immigration procedures transparent and would save the passengers from difficulties caused by miscommunication.

Most didn't have address proof The passengers who were detained at the airport in Dubai were the first batch of flyers who faced a crisis as they couldn’t produce proper travel documents. Even though most people could prove that they had the stipulated amount at hand, they failed to provide the address proof of relatives or other accommodation details. When some of them said that they were residing with their relatives, the officials inquired about their address and Emirates ID. But, the passengers had to return as they couldn’t produce these details. Meanwhile, some others had to wait at the airport for hours before returning. These people had to suffer such hardships at the airport as they weren’t informed about the guidelines by the travel agents. However, the travel agents say that they too had no idea as these weren’t stricter earlier.

F1 legend set to make Red Bull return

F1 legend set to make Red Bull return

abu dhabi visit visa rules

Red Bull have confirmed that legendary Formula 1 driver David Coulthard will return to the team for a showcase event in Prague.

The 53-year-old Scotsman raced for the Milton Keynes-based squad from 2005 until his retirement from the sport in 2008.

Coulthard enjoyed a long and successful career in F1 that begun in 1994 with Williams , before joining McLaren in 1996 who he spent close to a decade with, achieving 13 wins across his time in the sport.

Joining Red Bull in their debut season, the team were only a midfield team while Coulthard was there, but he was able to achieve two podiums in his four years with them, finishing third in Monaco in 2006 and in Canada in 2008.

Coulthard to make Red Bull return in Prague

Since retiring from F1, the Scotsman is more known for his role as a pundit, being a regular face on the BBC and now Channel 4’s coverage of the sport.

And later this summer, Coulthard is set to get back behind the wheel of a Red Bull in the Czech Republic.

On August 17, the team will be running their Red Bull Showrun event at Rohanske Nabrezi in Prague, where fans will get the chance to see an F1 car closer than ever before.

For this event, Coulthard will be driving the RB7, as driven by Sebastian Vettel and Mark Webber in 2011, which won 12 of the 18 races that season as Vettel grabbed his second world championship and the team’s second constructors’ title.

Speaking with Prague Morning , Coulthard told of his excitement about taking part in the event and spending time in the city, having recently set up a project to support women in motorsport there.

“I have many friends here and visit Prague more often than my native Scotland. It’s a beautiful city, with great sights, cuisine, and people. I believe we’ll put on a memorable show,” he said.

Along with showcasing the RB7, the event will also feature drifting by the German Red Bull Driftbrothers and Lithuanian freestyle stuntman Aras Gibiezi.

It was revealed by the authorities that four people died due to e-scooter and bicycle-related accidents, prompting residents to raise concern and call for stricter rules for e-scooter riders to ensure public safety.

Mohammed Abunael, a marketing executive at a gifting firm and a resident of Abu Dhabi, shared his experiences with people riding e-scooters on roads without proper gear and engaging in reckless riding.

“Once a week, I have to visit the busy markets of Deira to meet with our vendors. It’s a nightmare for me because I'm always worried about getting hit by an e-scooter rider. Their riding patterns are unpredictable, and some riders are extremely reckless,” expressed the Jordanian expat.

Stay up to date with the latest news. Follow KT on WhatsApp Channels.

"There were a couple of instances where I almost got hit by riders crossing the road without using pedestrian crossings. Some of them were on their phones, not caring about vehicles approaching," added Abunael.

The authorities recorded over 7,800 traffic violations . They also confiscated 4,474 e-scooters and bicycles in the first half of 2024. This means an average of 43 traffic violations were recorded and 24 e-scooters or bicycles were seized daily.

Residents across the emirate are voicing their frustrations. “E-scooter riders are causing chaos on streets, especially in Deira, Karama, and Al Barsha,” said Hannan Khateeb, sales manager at an FMGC firm. “Many riders often disregard traffic signals and ride recklessly, endangering themselves and others. We need stricter rules to prevent accidents,” said Khateeb.

To curb reckless driving, the Dubai Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has mandated a set of rules for e-scooter riders. The authority introduced licensing and registration, as well as raised awareness to ensure residents are aware of and comply with traffic laws. RTA also established specific zones and lanes for e-scooters and even imposed speed limits. The use of helmets and other protective gear to reduce the risk of injury was also mandated, and individuals not adhering to these rules would be fined.

“With so many restrictions, these e-scooter riders still break the law,” said Khateeb.

A few residents also raised concerns about how their children are not safe whenever they are out. Fatima El Hamed, an Egyptian residing in Al Majaz, Sharjah, and a mother of two said that the authorities should be vigilant and impose heavy fines for those who overspeed and break the rules. “My children and I love walking along the corniche, but the constant threat of speeding e-scooters and bicycles is terrifying. Even at Mamzar Beach in Dubai, many riders go very fast, posing a danger to walkers and joggers. Stricter rules are essential to protect both us and the e-scooter riders,” she said.

“I request authorities to be more vigilant to curb the rise in dangerous behaviors among some riders. Many are seen riding on pedestrian paths, ignoring traffic signals, and even using their devices on highways,” Fatima added.
