An interview with Star Trek’s ‘Q’, John de Lancie, ahead of FAN EXPO Philadelphia 2022

star trek convention philadelphia

April 7th, 2022 | By Kevin Tierney

FAN EXPO Philadelphia is a sci-fi, horror, anime, and gaming event taking place in Philadelphia from April 8-10 th  at the Pennsylvania Convention Center,  tickets are still available . Besides attractions and exhibitors, quite a few celebrities make appearances. We had a chance to catch up with one of those celebrities, John de Lancie, whose sci-fi pedigree includes the role of Q throughout the Star Trek franchise and featured most recently on  Star Trek: Picard . He sat down with us to talk about his career, his adventures in sailing, and why Eddie Izzard tapes are good for anxiety.

I did not realize you were born in Philadelphia …

I was born in Philadelphia down on Sansom Street, then my parents moved out to Ardmore when I was about eight or nine. My father was with the Philadelphia Orchestra and taught at and then ultimately ran the Curtis Institute of Music, so I spent a lot of time in the city going to concerts. It was my home and I still have a very dear friend that lives there. He and I met each other when we were one and a half years old when both of our mothers met in Rittenhouse Square, and we’ve been friends ever since. I’ll see him while I’m in town.

I want to know what it’s like to sail on the Pacific Ocean …

I’ve been sailing on the Pacific Ocean for about 40 years. I sail out to the Channel Islands all the time; they are about 30 miles offshore. Once I took a trip to Tahiti with a couple of friends, and we also went to the Marquesas [Islands] which was an amazing place. It’s enough off of the beaten track so it’s not like going to Tahiti, and it’s where the more ancient Polynesian culture existed. It’s located further east than Tahiti, the Tuamotus, and the Society Islands, and after the Polynesians populated [the Marquesas] they were able to take advantage of the winds and go downhill onto the Tuamotu Islands, which I also went to. The Tuamotus are the largest coral archipelago in the world and that’s where you’ll see pictures from National Geographic.

I brought the boat back the following year, which was 52 days back. I did that with a young man, Ray, who was my son’s best friend and who had never gone sailing before. This was definitely a baptism by fire with six hours on, and six hours off for 52 days.

Have you ever encountered a scary moment out at sea?

Many…many… [laughs],  and you just have to keep your wits about you. One of the things you have to do, and all of the sailors I know do it – when you’re on the water you’re constantly running scenarios through your head. What if?

I had a few mishaps…some of them came on me by surprise and others were thankfully averted. Whenever I would turn on an engine, I would do something that probably more people don’t do…I just would just sit there maybe five or ten minutes looking at it, closely. Looking at the belts, checking for the heat…just looking at it. And then go “okay, we’re good” …but one day, about a thousand miles out, I saw a little vibration. So, I essentially parked the boat and I changed out the water pump on the diesel engine. If I hadn’t, and that thing went, it would have [messed] up a lot of other stuff.

One night I went out on the deck and the mast was leaning over. I had lost a chainplate and lost the shroud, the piece of wire that goes all the way to the top of the mast. Well, that was something to be fixed IMMEDIATELY. We parked the boat and began repairs for that.

Another time I hit a storm on the way back…more like the end of a storm that was coming down from the Bering Strait. The waves were high…I was would back and I’d go: “Oh —- me.”  [Laughs] . Perhaps I don’t need to be looking behind me too much! The boat was doing great…it was a great, great boat. A real ocean boat. Often times they say that the boat will save many an ill-experienced captain. You just sometimes just turn it over to the boat and let the boat take care of itself. This is where I encountered my third problem: Ray and I had to park the boat for 36 hours with those large waves because we had to figure out how to deal with another problem all the way out on the bow.

So, there were times…you just have to keep your wits about you. Just one problem at a time.

Those stories make me nervous just listening to them …

[Laughs]  At one point during the storm, I could tell with the two of us the tension was really high and there was nothing more we could do. It was around midnight, and I said to Ray: “Hey listen, do you know Eddie Izzard? The comedian. How about you and I watch an Eddie Izzard tape?” [Laughs] So we’re down below, everything is battened down, we’re getting blown back and forth and the boat is really moving around, and we watched an Eddie Izzard tape. I knew it was important for us to get our minds off of what was going on. And we laughed, which was a nice tension reliever. Then he went to sleep for a couple of hours, and I lay there, kind of dosing. Around first light, at about 5 am, we suited ourselves up, shackled ourselves down, and went out and hung out on the bow for a couple of hours trying to figure out how to fix it.

I would be remiss if I didn’t ask you about your career in science fiction. Your most seminal role is Q from the Star Trek franchise, mostly featured on  Star Trek the Next Generation  and now  Picard . There is a big-time gap between  Picard  and  The Next Generation . How do you compare the experiences?

When they asked me to go and do  Picard , the first thing I wanted to know is if they were planning on having me in those tights again. They said no, of course not. The next question, which was a very serious question, was are we trying to create or recreate? Because if we are trying to recreate, I have a problem with that. A lot of time has passed. It’s a different show…it’s twenty years later and I’m a different person. It would be unseemly if I was prancing around like the clown that I was before. And they said no…we want you now and we want you with the sensibilities of now…and I said okay.

Do you like it better now or then?

Back then, when I first did Q, I made a calculated move. [On TNG] I’m surrounded by Picard, who’s sort of a stick in the mud, and everybody was very very serious. And I thought…to differentiate myself, I don’t need to follow that. So, I made those choices back then. I guess, in a way, they were good choices because I did six episodes for  Next Generation  and in the end became certainly disproportionately popular because of those choices.

This time [on Picard], the material gave me a reason, whereas, with the first incarnation of Q, there was no backstory. [On  Next Generation ] They thought, and I thought, it was going to be a one-off, so there was no backstory…there was nothing. Everything was very much on the surface…what you saw is what you got.

Here, there is a backstory. Here, there is an agenda. It’s not just about being annoying with  Picard . There’s something at stake…not only for you but for me. That adds weight to the portrayal [of Q] that was not really there in the opening episodes of  The Next Generation .

Now I have to say the episode [of  Next Generation ], “All Good Things,” by that time, was about serious stuff. Picard and Q always worked best when the event was philosophical in nature .

Your website says you have a strong interest in science and your past credits are full of appearances in major science-fiction franchises (Star Trek, Battlestar Galactica, Torchwood) …did your interest in science develop from playing those parts, or was it the other way around?

I was not a very good student…enough that I flunked out of multiple schools. At the time, it was presented to my parents that I was ‘lazy’ or just ‘not living up to my potential. This is right around the time that the whole idea of learning disabilities and dyslexia was just in its nascence. When it was said that maybe I had dyslexia, I was happy that they were at least not calling me stupid, but there was nothing done about it.

I took it on myself to learn how to read, so I began to read out loud. The first book I read, from cover to cover, was Jules Verne’s  The Mysterious Island . It was about these guys who escaped from a Confederate prisoner of war camp in an observation balloon that takes them out to the Pacific Ocean, and they alight on a mysterious island. I was so impressed by how much these guys knew…what they knew of a scientific nature, what they knew about reality…they knew about all of these things, and I thought to myself: “These are the guys I want to be like”

I had just begun sailing and then began reading about explorers…sea explorers and scientists and more and more and more I became interested in that world and that has extended all the way through my entire life.   For tickets to FAN EXPO Philadelphia, click  here . Unlike so many other genre conventions, Creation Entertainment has a strict company policy not to "oversell" our conventions. In other words, every patron, no matter what bracket of ticket they purchase, will have a seat in the main auditorium where the major guests appear and events take place. Nothing upsets us more than hearing about other conventions that sell tickets to patrons and then those very same patrons have to wait on additional lines inside the facility to get into (or sometimes not!) the main theatre. An important Creation Entertainment difference we want you to know about!

The Creation difference extends to our 40 years experience in running fan conventions. In the last few years we've seen promoter after promoter fail taking hard earned ticket money down with them. Inexperienced promoters, often first-timers, use celebrity images and names to get ticket money which they use to hopefully pay their expenses. When that fails they've already gone through "your" ticket money and they collapse leaving no recourse for ticket holders. They say "buyer beware" but this has happened in Twilight, Star Trek, Battlestar Galactica, and Firefly fandom (to name just a few) and we really feel for those great fans who have lost their ticket money and upset travel plans.

**All Convention tickets have a $7.75 shipping/handling fee charged per ticket ordered. This applies to all online, phone, fax and mail orders. Note: Our ticketing office (Leticia) direct e-mail address has been changed to: creatickets@creationent.com

***Attention Attendees: Do not purchase Creation Tickets from scalpers or anyone trying to offer tickets as you arrive at our convention locations. Each ticket is checked for authenticity at the door with a scanner and we can not let you in if your ticket is counterfeit (which has happened recently). Each ticket once scanned makes any and all copies of that same one of a kind scan void and we can only let the first person in with it. Please ony buy your tickets only from Creation in advance or at the door, we seen too many nice folks lose their hard earned money this way and be turned away. Thanks, we appreciate your support!

PLEASE INCLUDE: CONVENTION NAME, CITY & DATE IN THE SUBJECT LINE OF ALL CORRESPONDENCE. A separate email is required for each show you wish to volunteer for. A separate email is required for each person volunteering. All volunteers must be 21 yrs or older.

We really appreciate your help in publicizing this event on-line. Grab our banners to put on your site!

ALL GUESTS are contracted to appear and all convention contracts specify that appearances are tentative and subject to change as film and television work demands take precedence as can a personal conflict. Our events will take place whether a specific guest cancels or not (we always try to book replacements) and therefore we can not issue admission ticket or ticket package refunds if a particular guest does not fulfill their appearance contract. Of course we will always refund separately purchased photo ops and autograph tickets for a guest if they cancel.

PHOTO TAKING POLICY AT THIS CONVENTION We know that taking photos makes the convention even more fun and we thought it would be a good idea to share our photo taking policies for you before you arrive at the convention so you can prepare. In the auditorium, photo taking is encouraged, but only from your seat. It is unfair to run up to the stage and block the view of others who have paid for reserved seats in front of you. Even if there are empty seats, patrons must sit in the seats they paid for to be fair to everyone. Due to fire marshall regulations everyone must be seated during performances. Please also be courteous to your neighbors when taking pictures. Photo taking is not allowed during autographing sessions nor during the photo ops. Only those people who have autograph tickets may come up to get autographs. At the Gold Exclusive Parties and Breakfast: photo taking is encouraged when the guests arrive (but only from your seats). After a sufficient time for all to get their photos we ask that your cameras be placed down so the celebrities can enjoy their time at the two food functions. Thank you for understanding the need to have these few rules so everyone is safe and has fun.

The vast majority of our guest celebrities take questions from the audience during their on-stage time. Therefore it is incumbent upon those that ask questions to make them ones that allow our mutual shared time with the celebrities to be enjoyable, interesting and entertaining for all (including the guest). Asking for hugs, telling stars we love them (we all do, that's why we're here), giving gifts, getting into long personal stories, or worse, is not acceptable for this format and, in fact, is quite self-centered when you are in essence "representing" all of fandom to a celebrity. Join us in trying to make this convention the best entertainment for everyone!

In the event of convention cancellations or date changes Creation Entertainment is not responsible for patrons' costs involving travel or hotel accommodations or any other non convention ticket expenses.

Advance ticket sales are generally turned off early to mid-week of the week of the events. Tickets, if they are not sold out, are sold at the convention of course.

WELCOME TO EVERYONE!

Thanks for being with us! We really appreciate your visit and we want to make sure you have the absolute best time! With that in mind a few rules to keep everyone safe:

1) Photo taking from your seats only, do not rush the stage when guests appear.

2) PHOTO OPS are done on a first come/first taken basis with any exceptions noted within this schedule, including Backstage VIPs who can go first. PLEASE be on time as they move very quickly and once over we cannot repeat. “Special poses” are at the discretion of the actor and could also be affected by guest flights or other scheduling issues.

3) Please have your items for signature out and ready during autograph sessions. Personalizations are at the discretion of the celebrities signing and/or may be affected by guest flights and other scheduling issues. You must bring something to have signed, either something from home or a photo or souvenir from the convention.

4) Our volunteers are here to help you and we thank them for doing so. However if you have an issue with ANYONE or ANYTHING please let one of our Creation Hosts (Doug Murray or Stephanie Dizon) know during the convention so we can solve the problem. We can’t help out if you don’t tell us! Don’t let anything ruin your experience: let Doug or Stephanie handle the issue on site!

5) Please sit ONLY in the seat you paid for.

6) At the request of our guests, ABSOLUTELY no video or audiotaping PLEASE!

7) Please turn cell phones off and kindly refrain from talking when theatre is active.

8) PHOTO OPS may be picked up in the photo op room when available, but not during a photo op session so we don’t interrupt the photographer. Full information on when photos will be ready for pick up is available on a hand-out in the photo op room.

9) ONLY ONE QUESTION MAY BE ASKED TO A CELEBRITY BY A FAN. PLEASE NO PERSONAL STORIES ABOUT YOURSELF, ASKING FOR HUGS, OR TELLING THEM WHY YOU LOVE THEM (that’s why we’re all here!)

10) During autographs we generally call row by row or by number. If you have trouble standing let us know, if you are in a wheelchair or scooter please go with your row or by your number.

11) Flash photography occurs in our theaters and anyone who is sensitive to such should be advised that it is occuring and avoid if necessary.

In the unlikely event of a cancellation of the convention, or a date change, Creation Entertainment is not responsible for refunding airfare or any other costs other than the payments made directly to Creation Entertainment for ticketing. Also in the unlikely event, due to weather, transit issues or last minute illness or other reason given by celebrity, an advertised guest does not make their appearance at the convention, Creation Entertainment is not responsible for any refunds other than separate specific to the guest autograph tickets or photo op tickets. In the extremely rare chance that a guest does not finish his or her autographs or photo ops (which has only happened in a hand full of cases over 40 plus years, always due to something out of our control) Creation Entertainment will only be responsible for the refund of the separate autograph or photo op ticket.

In the extremely rare case (which has never happened before) our computer systems may accept more tickets than we have allotted for. If that should occur we would refund ticket money to the last several people (in order) who did manage to get a confirmation or ticket. As we've said it has never happened but we want to have a fair scenario in place it if does occur.

Flashes occur from phone and cameras often during stage presentations. If you are sensitive to such lighting please be advised to take the necessary cautions.

One of the ways D&I Con really differentiated themselves was in cultivating an intimate experience with the guests. Q&A sessions with the actors started the traditional way, with everyone on a stage led by a moderator. But after introductions, the room was divided into small groups, with each actor coming into the audience for chats and then rotating through the groups. I’ve been attending cons for almost 25 years, and I’ve never seen a con approach a Q&A that way.

To be completely honest, there were some challenges with the format — some actors are more soft spoken and some are more gregarious. It made hearing questions and responses a bit challenging at times. I think in the future, more could be done to spread folks out and maybe utilize room dividers. But I admire the attempt to do something different, and on the whole, I really liked it. For me, being in a group of around 50 people seated around the guest sure as hell beats being at the back of a 5,000+ seat ballroom looking at a view screen of the stage.

Another unique hallmark of D&I Con were the actors’ away missions. These required an additional ticket, but afforded a limited number of attendees some really special experiences. Garrett Wang (Harry Kim) used his away mission to teach people to play Craps. JG Hertzler (Martok) and Robert O’Reilly (Gowron) taught Bat’leth stage combat (and attendees got to take their foam weapon home). Bob Picardo (The Doctor) gave singing lessons. And there were half a dozen others to choose from.

We popped in to observe a few of these missions and everyone seemed to be having a great time. So many conventions are focused on just Q&A, photos, and autographs — it was refreshing to see a con work so hard to create memorable opportunities to engage with the guests outside of the typical offerings.

(Although my schedule didn’t allow me to attend the various night time festivities, you could tell each morning that the previous night had been a lot of fun! The GIS folks clearly know how to throw a party!)

A personal highlight for me was finally getting to see Alexander Siddig (Dr. Bashir). I’ve been trying to meet him since the late 90s. He makes limited convention appearances, so it was awesome to see D&I Con have him on the guest list. On Sunday, Sid City (his official fan club) hosted an in person meeting of the Sid City Social Club, which started as a series of Zoom calls during the height of the pandemic.

It was wonderful to see these folks come together in person, many for the first time ever. If you have not yet experienced the Sid City Social Club, an archive of highlights is available on YouTube .

Gowron and Martok have arrived at #DNICon for the Bat'leth training away mission! Qapla'! pic.twitter.com/QC8jDUzVMQ — TrekCore.com 🖖 (@TrekCore) May 6, 2023

For a freshman effort, I think GIS delivered a really fun convention. Were there some logistical challenges and growing pains? Yes. But at the end of the day, I made wonderful memories with the guests and my friends. (And I made new friends, which is always a bonus!)

Word on the street is that D&I Con is going to be an annual event here in Philly, and I have faith that the folks over at GIS are going to learn from this inaugural event and improve upon it for next time. Their hearts are clearly in the right place here. And even though the convention is over, you can still enter their sweepstakes to win a trip into space through August! (Keep an eye on GIS’ social media for future events.)

A final footnote: I was reading a post about D&I Con in the Star Trek Wholesomeposting group on Facebook, and someone in the comments mentioned that she’d “tried [a convention] once in the 90’s as a young woman and was sexually harassed [sic] out of the building. Things have very much changed.” As I was reading this comment, I was instantly transported back to being age 15 at a convention, dressed like Dax, and several creepy old men asking me if my spots went “all the way down.” As much as I have fond memories of 90s Trek conventions, not everything about them was great.

Thankfully, D&I Con has created a wholesome and wonderful community and their mission of inclusivity and respect was thoroughly embedded in the convention – something we did not always have at the 90s cons. I’m grateful for this change, and clearly so are others. Thanks, D&I Con!

Schuster Star Trek Conventions/1978 (July) Philadelphia Schuster Star Trek Convention

Star Trek Philadelphia took place July 14-16 at the Holiday Inn on City Line Avenue.

Planned: Admission was $10 until October 1977, $15 from November 1977 to April 1978, and $20 after May 1978. Checks were payable to "Star Trek Philadelphia."

Guest of honor was George Takei, perhaps others.

From an article in "The Philadelphia Inquirer":

The four-day extravaganza in Philadelphia, organized by New York businessman and promoter, John Townsley , will feature several Trekkie favorites besides Takei but not the two biggest -- William Shatner, who is Capt. James T. Kirk, and Leonard Nimoy, who is Mr. Spock. "They cost too much," press liaison Nora Boch explained. But their absence did not deter the 3000 fans who paid $20 each to register in advance for the convention, or the thousands more who simply showed up, paying $8 a day. Nor did it deter the entrepreneurs, who were legion. Jeff Maynard, for one, was doing a brisk business selling "Fanzies," [1] or Star Trek stories written by fans: "tribbles," a kind of stuffed reproductions of an outer space animal: the blueprints to the Star Ship Enterprise, and models of the characters and spaceships. "See, it's not crap stuff," he said pointing to an array of items. "A lot of people sell anything. I like to stay in the higher stuff. I don't sell junk.... A lot of thought and care goes into these things." Maynard, a middle-aged man with a deep tan, literally lives off of Star Trek now.... [more about selling at cons]... Together, [two fans] plan to spend about $700 this weekend, which, no doubt, will satisfy organizer Townsley. After all, Ms Boch says, "He's not into it for the altruism." [2]

NOTE: there may have been another con scheduled for this weekend at the same place, but that con was postponed and held August 18-20, 1978 at the Sheraton Hotel on JFK Blvd.
