MSC Cruises Bringing Second Ship to Port Canaveral

MSC Cruises is expanding its presence at Port Canaveral with the addition of a second ship, the MSC Grandiosa starting winter 2025/26. It will be the first time MSC Cruises will operate two ships from the port.

MSC Grandiosa will sail seven-night cruises to the Eastern and Western Caribbean, while MSC Seashore, which is already there will sail short three- and four-night cruises to Ocean Cay and Nassau.

"The Winter 2025-2026 season will mark our largest presence in the U.S. to date, and our expansion at Port Canaveral is a big part of that," said Ruben A. Rodriguez, president of MSC Cruises, USA. "Ever since we started sailing from Port Canaveral in 2021, our guests have told us they love how convenient that makes it to experience MSC Cruises' unique international flavor.

On its Eastern Caribbean itineraries, MSC Grandiosa will visit a mix of the following ports: Nassau, Ocean Cay Marine Reserve, Puerto Plata, San Juan, and St. Thomas.

On its Western Caribbean itineraries, the ships will visit a mix of: Nassau, Cozumel, Costa Maya, Cayman Islands, Montego Bay, Falmouth, and Belize City.

The P-12’s first pre-production vessel, named ‘Zero’, achieved a successful flight, reaching its take-off speed of 16 knots and quickly accelerating to a top speed of 30 knots within 16 seconds. Electrifying waterways has traditionally posed challenges due to the high energy consumption of conventional fast boats, which limited their range. The P-12, however, addresses this issue effectively. It not only stands as the fastest electric ship to date but also the first capable of undertaking long-range, high-speed journeys. This breakthrough offers significant advantages for operators, including enhanced profitability.

Innovative design and sustainability

The P-12’s innovative design is a key factor in its performance. Equipped with three carbon fiber wings beneath the hull, the vessel reduces energy consumption by an impressive 80% compared to regular fast vessels. Once airborne, its digital Flight Control System adjusts the foils’ angles based on data from various sensors, ensuring a smooth and stable ride without the discomforts often associated with sea travel.

The vessel’s production is underway at Candela’s Stockholm factory to meet increasing global demand. The second P-12 vessel will join Stockholm’s public transport system this year, ferrying passengers between the island suburb of Ekerö and the city center. This electric vessel, capable of carrying 30 passengers with minimal wake production, has received a speed exemption in the city, reducing commuting times from 55 minutes to just 25 minutes. This makes it faster than competing subway and bus lines, and it can double the speed of car commutes during rush hour.

Transforming urban transportation

The P-12 is set to transform transportation trends, particularly in cities like Stockholm where water traffic has declined due to the prevalence of faster and cheaper terrestrial options. Gustav Hasselskog emphasizes this shift, stating, “Today, in many cities, roads are congested while the waterways – mankind’s oldest infrastructure – is unused for fast commuting. The P-12 offers a path to use these waterways as green highways, offering fast intra city connections. The quickest way is often over water.”

Advanced ship design

The P-12 represents a significant advancement in ship design, blending innovation and sustainability. Beyond its unique hydrofoil system, Candela’s engineering team has revamped every aspect of the vessel to ensure maximum efficiency, from maintenance to docking.

A notable feature is the smooth boarding experience provided by an extendable, automatic bow ramp, which can adjust to different quay heights ranging from 0.2 to 2 meters. This allows the P-12 to travel various global routes without needing dock modifications. Additionally, each stop takes less than 2 minutes, thanks to the C-POD motors’ ability to maneuver swiftly, even sideways if required. The design also allows for single-person operation, significantly reducing operational costs and enhancing efficiency.

Economic and environmental benefits

The P-12’s sustainable design extends beyond efficiency to offer significant cost savings for operators. Some of my friends joined me on a recent journey to Panguitch. Despite their lack of prior visits,  they were also filled  with nostalgia as we drove down Main Street. The town’s rich history and charm resonated with them, creating an instant connection.

In 1864, the former lumber and ranching community  was founded. Now, w orn brick buildings housing gift shops and eateries line the roads. While the outside of locations often remain the same through the years, some, like the historic Gem Theater and the Two Sunsets  Hotel , have undergone indoor renovations.

Roger Kaspar and his wife, Ruth Henrie Kaspar, are not just business owners in Panguitch; they are part of its rich history. Ruth’s family has strong roots in Panguitch and her forebears helped settle the Garfield County area. Her father, Panguitch native Jimmy O. Henrie, made significant contributions as a civil and nuclear engineer, she said.

Although he is a “Californian through and through,” Roger said he fell in love with the area, noting its historic buildings and the surrounding natural beauty, such as the red rocks and cedar trees.

“The first time I came  down here was before we were married,” he said. “I met many of her relatives. She’s probably related to half the town. I fell in love with Ruth and also with this area. I’ve been coming back ever since. I’ve hiked most of the slot canyons in the area. … I just  really  love this area and want to see Panguitch succeed, keep traditions alive and add new ones.”

One of those beloved traditions is the Pioneer Day Parade, which commemorates the day Brigham Young and the early Mormon pioneers first entered the Salt Lake Valley on July 24, 1847. As part of the celebration, fire engines drive down the street during the parade and spray the children with water. There is also the Garfield County Fair each year.

“There’s an activity there that I’ve never  ever seen anywhere else …  what they call the fish grab,” Roger said. “They bring all these trout from the hatchery   and put them  into these big pools.  The little  kids  and the older kids  all get in there with the fish, catch them; many people take them home and do a big fish fry.”

Before the couple bought the hotel and theater, they purchased the two-story red brick home owned by Ruth’s parents, Jimmy O. and Evelyn Henrie. The house  was built by Ruth’s great-grandparents, James Bell Heywood and Maria Clarinda (Larsen). Her great-grandfather not only built the home in 1899 but also formed the bricks and fired them across the street to build the house.

Inspired by the theater’s history and love for the area, they purchased the Gem Theater in September 2020.

At the time, the Gem Theater  had been up for sale after the previous  person running t he theater came down with cancer and died .   The 1909 theater was on the verge of becoming a building for storage   units , but Roger said it had too much history, such as his wife’s grandmother playing the piano there when it showed silent films.

The lobby of the Gem Theater now features an ice cream parlor where Roger makes homemade ice cream and carries BYU Creamery ice cream. He also makes other sweets like hand-dipped chocolates using a crunchy quinoa filling dipped in Belgian dark chocolate.

The theater shows first-run movies and classic films . Theater rentals are offered as well for people looking to celebrate birthday parties or family gatherings while watching a movie of their choice.

Later, the couple bought the Panguitch Inn on Main Street, now the Two Sunsets Hotel, hoping to preserve its historic charm and add new visitor experiences.

The hotel was in bad shape after sitting idle during the COVID-19 pandemic. 

“It was a lot of work,” Roger said. “And I think you can see it’s turned out quite nicely.”

He said the name “Two Sunsets Hotel” was derived from an illusion in the area: when the sun sets in the west, it simultaneously lights the mountains to the east, making it appear that there are two sunsets.

Roger’s eyes lit up when he talked about the memorable experiences he wanted visitors to have with each property having its own draw.

“I think it’s different for the hotel and the theater. With the theater, I want visitors to have a kind of a throwback-in-time feeling.  It’s set up so that it’s like a 50’s-era ice cream parlor on the walk-in,” he said. “It’s a single-screen movie theater where you can see first-round movies, but it’s really  walking into a historic building that’s taking you back in time.”

The Gem Theater also houses a game room with air hockey, foosball and chess, and upstairs, visitors will find a rock shop featuring unique rocks from the area, as well as rock lamps and decorative stones. 

“There’s some pretty cool rocks just from the surrounding area,” he said. “And some of my kids are really into rock hounding, rocks and things like that. So it’s been great fun doing that with them.”

When people visit, Roger said he wants them to have quality experiences and to remember their visit long afterward. 

“We have a tremendous number of people from different countries that come here and stay here, which is fun,” he said. “I sit here in the lobby sometimes of the hotel, and on a given night, there might be visitors from different parts of Europe, Singapore, and all over the United States.  And that’s  really  fun to talk and share experiences with them. It’s fun to connect in different ways with people.”

Those looking for another one-of-a-kind experience should mark their calendars for the  Quinoa Harvest and Andean Festival, which the Kaspars hold each September when the Panguitch-grown quinoa is ready to harvest.  The festival features a Peruvian buffet, traditional Andean music, quinoa experts, a hike into a local canyon with llamas  and other activities.  

Roger, who plants quinoa on their property for the festival, said quinoa is an excellent crop for Panguitch to grow since it thrives at high elevations and originates in the high mountain valleys of the Andes Mountains. He added that it requires moderately cool temperatures to set seed, tolerates a short growing season, can grow in poor soil, requires less water than most crops, especially alfalfa, and has a bitter coating that deters birds and other animals, which is  removed  before cooking.

The Kaspars have six children and  originally  didn’t plan on entering the hospitality business, as both have doctorate degrees.  Roger is a biochemist  and  continues to work on therapeutics for rare skin diseases . Ruth is an audiologist in private practice.

In 2023, Maryland Port Administration spokesperson Richard Scher said, 444,000 passengers boarded cruises in the terminal, the highest total since 2012.

Eight cruise ships are scheduled to depart in June.

“We are expecting our channel to be reopened by the end of May,” Scher said.

The Dali, a cargo ship with thousands of containers aboard, has sat in the Patapsco River since it struck one of the Key Bridge’s support piers March 26, collapsing the span into the water and killing six construction workers. Crews plan to use explosives Monday to remove bridge and roadway wreckage that has been lodged on top of the ship. Removing the ship is a major step toward reopening the 50-foot-deep shipping channel, which authorities have said will be usable by the end of May.

The cruise terminal primarily services ships from Carnival and Royal Caribbean cruise lines, and the Norwegian Cruise Line also occasionally uses the terminal. Typically cruises are round trips, although there are some one-way transatlantic offerings. Neither Carnival nor Royal Caribbean responded to a request for comment.

Royal Caribbean cruise ships left Baltimore on a 13-night trip March 15 and a 12-night trip March 23, and both ships returned to Norfolk, Virginia, where buses took passengers back to their cars in Baltimore, according to the Cruise Maryland Terminal 2024 schedule. Royal Caribbean also had cruises originally scheduled to leave from Baltimore on April 4 and 12 rerouted to Norfolk and has two more trips originally scheduled to leave Baltimore on May 25 and 30.

In a statement May 15, the cruise line said the May 25 cruise will leave Baltimore “as planned’.”

“Royal Caribbean International looks forward to returning to the Port of Baltimore once again. Vision of the Seas will set sail on a 5-night itinerary as planned on Saturday, May 25,” Royal Caribbean said.

A Carnival cruise ship left Baltimore on March 24 for a seven-night trip and returned to Norfolk, according to the Cruise Maryland Terminal 2024 schedule. Carnival also had cruise ships scheduled March 31; April 7, 21 and 28; and May 5 and 12 that left from Norfolk instead.

Scher said there are no confirmed updates yet about the schedule for Royal Caribbean ships originally scheduled to leave Baltimore on May 25 and 30 and a Carnival ship originally scheduled to leave May 26.

“The incident began on March 26 and each cruise scheduled since then to leave from Baltimore has instead left from Norfolk,” Scher said

Norwegian Cruise Line did not have any ships scheduled to depart Baltimore until September.

Cruise terminals require customs and border protections and security, as well as luggage and cleaning services. Scher said the Maryland Departments of Commerce and Labor have instituted financial assistance and worker retention programs for port workers

Stephen Kirkland, executive director of the Norfolk cruise terminal, which boarded around 125,000 passengers in 2023, said the city primarily works with Carnival but originally did not have any cruises scheduled for this spring and summer because of construction on the terminal.

“Demolition on that project wasn’t due to start until June, when we got the calls from Royal Caribbean and Carnival that they needed to reroute, we had an available terminal because of construction,” Kirkland said.

Kirkland said Norfolk still plans to start construction in June.
