Here, you can learn more about what's involved in an around-the-world cruise and drool over 11 terrific choices across a range of fares for an incredible monthslong voyage at sea.

What is a world cruise?

Never mind the moniker, a world cruise may visit several continents but not circumnavigate the globe. Cruise lines usually designate one ship (a few offer two) to sail about 100 days or longer — some even sail more than 200 days — without repeating ports.

World cruises traditionally start in January and end around April or May. They sail round-trip from one American city, such as San Francisco or Miami, or offer a choice of starting points on both coasts, making access easy.

What to know about world cruises

With so few world cruises available, book far in advance. Bookings open roughly two years in advance, and some small-ship cruises sell out within hours. You'll need the extra time to make arrangements to leave your home for months. For that reason, this story will focus on 2025 world cruises.

Related: Hot cruises you'll need to book at least 1 year in advance — maybe even 2!

Around-the-world cruise cost

Such lengthy sailings cost plenty. The bigger ship lines offer the lowest fares, although extra fees for what's not included (such as shore excursions and alcohol) can add up quickly. If contemplating a big-ship voyage, read the inclusions carefully, as they vary among lines.

Luxury vessels bundle many costly amenities into the fare, like business- or first-class plane tickets and luxury hotel stays, and charge the most. They also deliver fine dining, pampering service, glam surroundings and impressive special events. (Silversea Cruises has previously rented out an entire island to entertain its world cruise guests.)

Thus, expect considerable price differences. Count on spending about $20,000 per person minimum to score an entry-level accommodation on the bigger ships and approximately $80,000 to $90,000 per person for an ultraluxury vessel.

Note that for the poshest lines, "entry-level" may mean a spacious, elegant suite with a veranda. For other lines, the most basic cabin is a small, windowless room.

What To Expect From Ultimate World Cruise

Get ready to visit all seven continents, 65 countries, over 150 ports of call, and 11 world wonders..

By Robert Schrader | Published on October 18, 2023

1. Are You The Ideal World Cruise Traveler?

Looking at Royal Caribbean's Ultimate World Cruise℠ itinerary, you might be surprised by the sheer volume of bucket-list sites, even if you consider yourself a seasoned traveler. The great explorers of history spent this long — the full cruise lasts 274 days — on a single sailing across the sea, never mind going to all corners of the globe.

Your epic journey around the world, of course, is sure to come with plenty of new-to-you destinations. From world wonders such as the Pyramids of Giza and the Great Wall of China to sun-dappled islands from French Polynesia to Greece, the array and diversity of horizons you sail to is unparalleled. This isn't a cruise — it's the  cruise to top all other cruises.

2. Do You Want To Minimize Flights?

Taj Mahal Entrance, Cochin, India

3. Is This Trip Too Good To Be True?

It might sound unbelievable that you'll be able to spread your arms out under Argentina's Christ the Redeemer statue and sip cocktails beneath the Sydney Opera House on the same sailing, but on this epic journey around the world, you can. The key to making the most of each port is to pace yourself — this is a long trip, in the best way possible.

Some stops along the Ultimate World Cruise℠ will invite more hiking and exploration (Jordan's ruins of Petra, for example), while the colorful waterfronts of European idylls like Bergen, Norway, are better for sitting down for a meal or drink. What makes this vacation unique is the luxury of time and space, which allow you to truly relax and explore many sides of yourself. You might consider yourself a total beach bum as you reach the sandy shores of Oahu but feel like a history buff as you take in the Taj Mahal. You might feel like an explorer as you explore the ruins of Chichén Itzá in Mexico on foot, then opt to take a camel when you reach the Pyramids of Giza.

4. How Much Does It Cost?

As you can imagine, this once-in-a-lifetime epic journey around the world is highly customizable. The ticket price for the 274-night journey ranges from $59,999 per person for an interior stateroom to $117,599 for a junior suite on the 2,476-passenger Serenade of the Seas® .

You might think that if you travel the world for almost a year, you'll need to bring your whole home with you, but this isn't necessarily the case. In fact, you'll want to err on the side of bringing less rather than more. You'll have laundry services (among other complimentary treats)  included in your fare, and can buy almost anything you need at ports. Focus on bringing a basic wardrobe built for laying in different climates, and any special items you know you can't easily buy, as well as medications and other need-to-haves. You won't want forget to pack bathing suits for Mexico, for example, or a coat for colder destinations.

So, is this the best way to travel the world? That's somewhat a matter of personal preference. Sailing the world with many of the same passengers offers an unprecendented bonding experience with like-minded travelers. The guests and crew become very much like a family on a world cruise, which can be a real joy to watch unfold — especially if you follow cruise etiquette and are considerate of others during the voyage. And the itinerary of the Ultimate World Cruise℠ 2023 is so extensive it's almost impossible to imagine. Certainly, if you love cruising and want to see much of the world as possible in one fell swoop, this is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to check many travel icons off your bucket list.

Go to the Kukulcan Pyramid at the Chichen Itza in Mexico

5. Do You Really Set Sail For ... Everywhere?

It's important to note that you can opt for the whole cruise, or stay onboard for however long you want. Each of four Ultimate World Cruise℠ segments — Americas, Asia Pacific, Middle East & Med and Europe & Beyond — can be booked a la carte, with business class airfare between your home and wherever you start and end included in the price. Or, pick one of the 17 sailings (ranging from nine to 29 nights) that make up the cruise and visit the sites that are most exciting to you.

Then again, if you can find the time, it's tempting to complete most of your bucket list in a single, epic trip when you circumnavigate the globe onboard a cruise ship. The iconic world wonders you'll see are only the beginning on this epic adventure.

Pacific World Sets Sail from Japan for World Cruise

  • August 29, 2023

Pacific World

Peace Boat’s Pacific World has recently set sail from Japan for a new around-the-world cruise. After entering service for the not-for-profit organization in April , the 1995-built vessel departed from Yokohama and Kobe on its second consecutive global voyage.

With a 105-day itinerary, the cruise is set to visit a total of 24 destinations before returning to Japan in early December.

According to Peace Boat, various historical World Heritage Sites will be visited during the voyage, including Guatemala, where the Incan Empire once stood Egypt, home to an ancient civilization; and Rome, the historic center of the Roman Empire.

Sailing to Central and North America, the Caribbean, Northern Europe, the Mediterranean and Asia, the global journey is also highlighted by opportunities to see the autumn foliage in Canada and the aurora borealis in Iceland.

According to Peace Boat, the itinerary features five days cruising in the Aurora Belt near 65⁰N latitude to give guests the chance to watch the northern lights.

The cruise also includes transits of the Panama Canal, the Suez Canal and the St. Lawrence Seaway.

Formerly operated by Princess Cruises, the Pacific World initially entered service in 1995. First in a series of four ships known as Sun Class, the 77,000-ton ship can carry up to 1,950 guests and was acquired by Peace Boat Organization in 2020 .

The largest vessel ever operated by the Japanese brand in its 37-year story, the former Sun Princess offers a series of facilities, including a four-deck atrium, a large theater, a complete spa and a selection of restaurants and bars.

Sailing for the non-for-profit organization, the vessel offers a series of global voyages that aim to raise awareness and build connections internationally among groups that work for peace, human rights, environmental protection and sustainable development.

Peace Boat's Ocean Dream cruise ship at sea

How I Cruised Around the World for Free with Peace Boat

From December 2015 to March 2016, I was able to cruise around the world for free by working as a volunteer teacher onboard Peace Boat’s 90th voyage on its cruise liner, the Ocean Dream.

We circumnavigated the Southern Hemisphere, traveling to 17 countries throughout Asia, Africa, South America, and Oceania.

on top of table mountain in cape town, south Africa

To say that the 105-day experience cruising around the world was life-changing sounds dramatic, but it’s absolutely true.

Not only did I learn so much about teaching and issues facing so many countries I knew little to nothing about, but volunteering on Peace Boat gave me the resume boost I needed to stand out for future job positions.

Peace Boat was the bridge between my time in Japan and my future milestones at sea and onward.

Because of Peace Boat, I was able to travel to all seven continents, sail through all seven seas , and even work and live in Antarctica .

What is Peace Boat?

Peace Boat is an NGO based in Japan that works to promote peace, human rights, and sustainability in accordance with the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

Through its global voyages, Peace Boat provides participants with unique educational programs in ports of call as well as onboard to learn about social issues and to encourage awareness, understanding, and engagement.

Peace Boat's Ocean Dream crossing under the Yokohama Bridge

In addition to the global voyages, Peace Boat has a number of projects and campaigns working toward its goals of promoting peace, human rights, and sustainability.

Here’s a short list of some of their projects:

  • International Campaign to Abolish Nuclear Weapons (ICAN)
  • The Ocean and Climate Youth Ambassadors Programme
  • Peace Boat Disaster Relief (PBV)

Where Does Peace Boat Sail?

Peace Boat’s sailings include both global and regional voyages.

Global voyage routes either take place in the Southern Hemisphere or in the Northern Hemisphere with crossings through the Panama and Suez Canals.

Regional voyages take place in Asia and Oceania.

Ports of call vary slightly each voyage even if the general route is the same.

The 90th global voyage that I was on sailed through the Southern Hemisphere, calling in the following ports:

Voyage map for Peace Boat's 90th global voyage

What are the Positions Available?

While Peace Boat has a handful of paid employees, voyage entertainment and classes are provided by volunteers who are able to sail for free in exchange for their time and services.

All positions require volunteers to be able to obtain the necessary visas, be available for the full duration of the voyage in addition to all pre-voyage trainings and orientation, and capable of working long days with nontraditional hours over extended periods at sea.

There are two main types of volunteer positions available.

Global English/Español (GET) Teacher

Onboard, the GET program offers cruise participants of all English or Spanish language levels the chance to learn and improve their oral communication with the goal of being able to use some of the skills in immediate real-life situations such as ports of call.

GET language teachers come from all over the world and put together customized lessons and classes from scratch once onboard that cultivate intercultural relationships.

Teachers are responsible for one-on-one private lessons, small group lessons, large open classes, in-port challenge programs, self-organized events, and ship-wide events or workshops.

Teacher Requirements

  • Have 18 months of full-time experience teaching English or Spanish as a second language
  • Be a highly advanced speaker of English and/or Spanish
  • Be able to design customized curricula, create original lesson plans, and host ship-wide events

105 day cruise around the world

Interpreter

While a typical commercial cruise’s main form of entertainment might be the broadway shows or theatrical performances, life onboard Peace Boat is more educational.

Every day is full of lectures and informational sessions hosted by a variety of guest educators from around the world.

Interpreters are responsible for simultaneously and consecutively interpreting these lectures and meetings for the educators and participants who speak other languages.

In addition to providing communication support between different language speakers and onboard language events, interpreters also assist with tours in ports of call.

Similar to GET teachers, interpreters are also responsible for holding self-organized events or classes.

Interpreter Requirements

  • Be fluent in two or more of the needed interpreting languages for the specific voyage
  • At least 20 years old
  • Regional conflicts
  • Human rights
  • Racism and discrimination
  • Social and environmental issues
  • Sustainability
  • Nuclear/energy concerns

What Does a Typical Day Onboard Look Like?

Just like a regular cruise, days at sea are filled with activities and events.

Participants can choose from a number of lectures, culture and language classes, entertainment events, and ship-wide festivals.

As a teacher, a full day at sea might look like the following:

Things that happened in the last few days: Rhianna listening party, hula hoop disco, a dear friend’s birthday, glaciers, learning hoko (a traditional Rapa Nui dance), and getting sick. Today I’ll have the chance to speak on a panel discussing my nationality and ethnicity in a series called “What’s Normal?” I’ll miss this daily, random wonderfulness. Benefits of Volunteering with Peace Boat

It’s a free round-the-world voyage .

Peace Boat world cruises run around USD 12,000 and not only are you getting the chance to see up to 20 different countries in multiple continents, but you are also getting an educational and immersive intercultural experience.

Accommodations, food, and visas are covered

For three months, I had the luxury of not having to pay rent or cook for myself.

I also received several ten-year visas for certain countries which are still valid today should I choose to return on my own.

You work with the best of the best

The GET teaching positions are highly competitive, and as a result, the teachers who are eventually selected are extremely talented, creative, and effective at what they do.

I actually didn’t know teaching with Peace Boat was a goal for many ESL teachers in Japan until after I went for the in-person interview and heard from other interviewees that this was their second or third year applying.

It was clear once I met the other teachers why they were chosen.

Although I felt out of place, I learned so much from my teaching team and they definitely made me a better teacher.

It makes your resume/CV stand out

I’ve written so much about how each of my experiences led me to the next and single-handedly opened doors of opportunity for me, and Peace Boat was probably the most important.

Because of my experience in a nontraditional international work environment with isolated periods at sea, I was able to get a shipboard job with Royal Caribbean as well as a contract position with the U.S. Antarctic Program .

You have the opportunity to live in a floating, educational city

Participants who choose to sail with Peace Boat are interested in learning more about various social and environmental issues all around the world.

This results in an inclusive and unique onboard culture that inspires dialogue and encourages communication across borders.

I hadn’t been challenged mentally or academically like this since university, and it was refreshing to be in such a stimulating environment again.

Challenges of Volunteering on Peace Boat

It’s unpaid.

While I think the compensation and exchange of getting to tag along on a world voyage is fair, the reality is not everyone is able to go without a paycheck for three months, especially if you’re not already in Japan as airfare is not included.

It’s a lot of work

The Peace Boat staff definitely made sure to emphasize that this was not a vacation for us teachers so that we wouldn’t be surprised about the work required of us once onboard.

Our schedule in the beginning of the voyage especially was packed because the language program is essentially put together only once the cruise begins.

The teachers work together to create the course curriculum from scratch after meeting the students and discussing with them what they’d like to learn.

In addition to designing and teaching a variety of lessons, teachers are in charge of several ship-wide events and workshops.

view of a beach and mountains from a straw roof top

Work hours vary

While a day in a port may only require a few hours of teaching responsibilities, days at sea can be full from morning to evening.

This is especially difficult during transpacific or transatlantic crossings that include over seven consecutive days at sea.

Orange sunset at sea

Communication can be difficult if your Japanese is limited

The majority of participating cruisers are Japanese.

It’s not impossible to make connections, but I found it challenging to socialize with many of the participants as my Japanese language skills were very limited.

The seas can be rough

Sea sickness pills are provided for, which I took full advantage of.

They do make you drowsy though, unless you take them regularly enough and build up an immunity to the side effects.

View this post on Instagram Day 4: Naha, Okinawa | We made it to our first port! The waters were rough leaving Yokohama (like a 6.0+ earthquake for 12 hours) but it’s been smooth sailing since. Internet is limited, slow, and costs money

Obviously when you’re at sea, free Wi-Fi and regular internet cannot be expected.

When I sailed, 100 minute internet cards were around USD 20.

In general though, life onboard was so busy that I didn’t really need (or have time) to be online that often and I just binged on internet in ports.

Effects on your health

The new and odd prolonged environment at sea can affect people differently, from skin issues to weight gain.

This may be TMI, but for me, it absolutely wrecked my hormones and I ended up having my period nearly every other week for the entire 105-day voyage.

It was awful.

moai statues on Easter Island

Story time.

I quickly ran out of tampons and spent way more than I’d planned on period products in countries where menstruating was ridiculously expensive to deal with.

I will say though that this opened my eyes to why simply having a period is such a barrier to girls’ education in underdeveloped countries and how privileged having access to affordable menstrual products is.

Like I said, you learn a lot while sailing around the world.

After Peace Boat and prior to moving on ships full time, my doctor put me on birth control to manage the horrific frequency of my periods, and I invested in a reusable period cup , which was one of the best choices I’ve ever made.

10/10 recommend for any uterus owners.

Is Peace Boat Worth It?

As a volunteer, absolutely.

For paying participants, I will say that based solely from a financial standpoint, you’ll be hard-pressed to find a cheaper world cruise than Peace Boat.

The average cost of paying for a world voyage with Peace Boat clocks in at around USD 12,000, which for someone who’s been in the commercial cruise industry for three years, let me tell you that USD 12,000 is a steal for a full world cruise.

Related: What Working on Cruise Ships is Really Like: Pros & Cons

World cruises with established cruise companies can range from USD 15,000 to upwards of USD 194,000.

Cape of Good Hope in South Africa

This obviously comes with caveats though.

First, it’s important to remember that Peace Boat is a non-profit focused on educational experiences, unlike the typical commercial cruises with professionally hosted activities and events and luxury amenities.

If your main goal is to see the world with the comfort and entertainment available on regular cruise lines, Peace Boat may not be the best world cruise for you.

But if you want to learn more about the world, different cultures, sustainability, and human rights in countries and ports that are not always the prettiest to see but have so much to offer, then Peace Boat will not disappoint.

This is SO interesting! I’ve worked as a performer on cruise ships for the last few years and I remember docking with Peace Boat once and being INTRIGUED simply because of the name! I googled the company at the time but it’s brilliant to get an insider’s experience!

That’s so cool that you docked together! I remember working on a Royal Caribbean ship a few years after working on Peace Boat and docking together in Finland and realizing how small Peace Boat’s ship is compared to the big cruise ships!

I am going to have my granddaughters read this article. There is so much to experience in this world that we don’t know about. The writing is beautiful, the story is very informative. This is something I would have enjoyed doing when I was young.

Oceania Cruises' 180-Day Cruise Will Visit 34 Countries in 2024

Oceania's world cruise will stop in almost 100 destinations in 180 days.

105 day cruise around the world

After record demand for its 2023 world cruise, Oceania Cruises has unveiled the itinerary for its epic global voyage for 2024. The cruise line's 180-day journey around the world will set sail on January 14, 2024, and visit more than 96 destinations in 34 different countries.

"Incredibly, last year our 2023 world cruise sold out in just one day, so for 2024 we are providing guests more extended voyage options to deeply and meaningfully rediscover the world," Howard Sherman, President and CEO of Oceania Cruises, said in a statement shared with Travel + Leisure.

Oceania's "Around the World in 180 Days" cruise will depart from Los Angeles and cross more than three oceans and 15 seas as it makes its way around the globe to New York. The journey, on the Oceania Insignia, stops at more than 100 UNESCO World Heritage sites with 24 overnight stays.

Passengers will journey across the Pacific, through French Polynesia and Australia before continuing onto destinations like Japan and Vietnam's Ha Long Bay. The voyage continues along the shores of India and the Arabian Peninsula before sailing across Europe and completing its route across the Atlantic in New York.

The 2024 "Around the World" journey starts at $48,499 per person and includes roundtrip first-class airfare and amenities like prepaid gratuities, laundry, and luggage delivery. During your days at sea, you can keep yourself busy with spa appointments, art workshops, the casino, cabaret, and four open-seating restaurants — not to mention the daily afternoon tea service accompanied by a four-string quartet. There is also a fitness center and sports deck, and of course, a saltwater pool with two hot tubs.

But if half a year at sea seems a bit too long, Oceania has also created four new Grand Voyages , varying in length from 72 to 82 days. "While a globe-circling journey is the pinnacle of life-changing travel experiences, we have specially curated a set of Grand Voyages for seasoned and time-rich travelers to navigate storied seas, straits, and oceans that boldly connect diverse and exotic corners of the globe," Sherman said.

The four journeys include routes from Los Angeles to Sydney, Abu Dhabi to Tokyo, Mumbai to Tokyo, and Papeete to Cape Town. The voyages start at $15,199 per person and prices vary, depending on the destination.

If you need a little more time to decide, Oceania Cruises has also released the itinerary for their 2025 Around-the-World Cruise which will flip the script and travel east to west from New York, passing through Latin America, Southern Africa, India, Asia, and Australia before finishing in San Diego.

Why you should take a world cruise.

105 day cruise around the world

By Elizabeth Harryman

October 02, 2023

Most people wouldn’t even consider embarking on an around-the-world voyage without first taking at least one cruise. But tempted with the opportunity to visit myriad countries on one trip, cruise newbie Linda Weissman jumped in with both feet. She and her husband, Martin, a retired physician, embarked on Cunard Line’s 105-day world cruise aboard Queen Elizabeth 2.

“I was petrified at first,” Linda recalls. But looking back, she has no regrets. In fact, since that voyage in 2007, the couple have taken a different world cruise every year, except for a hiatus during the pandemic. And they’re set to sail on Cunard’s 2024 and 2025 World Voyages.

“Having had to postpone some travel during the pandemic, people are now seeking those bucket-list trips,” says Heather Felix, vice president of branch operations for the Auto Club of Southern California.

The Weissmans are among a flotilla of passengers signing up for world cruises as never before. “World cruises are performing much better than the industry overall,” says Michael Driscoll, editor of travel industry publication Cruise Week . “People who take them have missed more than travel; they’ve missed the world.”

The ultimate travel experience

Cunard launched the world cruise concept in 1922, when the line’s RMS Laconia circumnavigated the globe, stopping at 22 ports in 130 days. Since then, world cruising for many has come to symbolize the ultimate travel experience.

Modern-day Magellans take part in unique activities in far-flung destinations—hearing a gamelan orchestra in Bali, perhaps, or sipping mint tea in the Khan al-Khalili bazaar in Cairo, or seeing Antoni Gaudí’s Sagrada Família cathedral in Barcelona. And world cruisers journey in grand comfort, transported in vessels with sumptuous interiors and elegant dining while gaining deeper insights about the globe from learned scholars.

Today, many lines offer world cruises ranging from about 100 to 200 days or even longer. Some are traditional around-the-globe circumnavigations that begin and end in the same port and visit dozens of countries. Others are variations: The trip might begin and end in different ports or traverse only part of the globe.

Voyages typically start in December or January, and fares begin at about $200 per person per night, including meals and most onboard activities; some fares are more inclusive than others.

Cruise lines offer other long-duration cruises that might concentrate on a particular part of the world. If passengers can’t spare the time for an entire voyage, they might be able to take segments.

Historically, world cruises have attracted mostly retirees. But given the trend of remote work, more working people may be on board in the future. “We’re not there yet,” says Driscoll, “but internet connectivity on ships improves every year. “

“They really do spoil people,” says AAA travel advisor Tanya Haigler, noting that cruise lines often include drinks packages, some shore excursions, and a generous shipboard credit. “The perks are very nice.”

And that’s just fine with world cruiser Linda Weissman, who owns a linen shop based in Birmingham, Michigan. “I like being pampered,” she says. “For 4 months, I don’t have to do a single thing. I don’t have to cook a meal, shop for groceries, or take the car in for servicing.”

These cruises are also a convenient way to see the world. “The countries come to us,” says Weissman, who climbed the Sydney Harbour Bridge when the ship called in Sydney, Australia.

Chuck and Lynn White of Lompoc, California, whom Haigler booked on Princess Cruises ’ 2023 111-day Around the World Cruise aboard  Island Princess , marveled at ancient structures in Petra, Jordan, and Ephesus, Turkey. A trip highlight was an excursion over several nights in India that included the Taj Mahal.

“It was more spectacular than I’d imagined,” says Chuck, who has retired from a company that supported satellite launches at Vandenberg and Cape Canaveral. “The symmetry and the inlay work were incredible,” adds Lynn, a real estate broker and property manager. The couple especially appreciated that Princess had arranged for 2 Indian ship staff members to accompany the tour and share cultural insights.

Detractors might argue that even stops like this are too brief to give passengers a sense of a destination. Perhaps, but world cruiser Judith Elder, a retired elementary school teacher who sailed with her husband, Jack, on Oceania Cruises’ 2019 180-day Around the World Cruise, offers this perspective: “The tours give you a sampling of what a place is like. You can always go back to the places that interest you to see them in more depth.”

The couple fed stingrays and small sharks in French Polynesia and viewed Komodo dragons in Indonesia. Jack, a former high school teacher and gymnastics coach, loved visiting the European cathedrals and marketplaces.

Benefits of a world cruise

Shipboard life is a big part of the fun. Most cruises offer an array of onboard activities ranging from dance classes and cooking demos to lectures, trivia contests, and all sorts of sports. And on a world cruise, you have the time to really hone a skill or feed a passion. In art class, for example, you can create a significant piece; in the ship’s gym you can develop an exercise routine. “I was never bored,” Judith Elder says. “The time went so fast.”

Lifelong friendships among passengers and even with crew members are another plus: “When we got off that ship it felt like the end of summer camp,” says Linda Weissman.

Perhaps most importantly, a world cruise is an education. “It’s the best way to learn about people around the world,” Judith Elder says. Scientists, naturalists, political science professors, and other experts give talks that provide insights into the destinations and ports of call. “When you meet families in different countries, you realize we all have the same desires and hopes. We have so much more in common than we do differences.”

AAA travel advisor Tanya’s tips for a world cruise

All of the world cruisers interviewed agree that it’s essential to plan and book your trip with a helpful travel advisor. Tanya Haigler has booked clients on 5 world cruises since 2019 and has these tips for anyone considering a long-duration voyage.

  • Book early. As soon as the cruise is announced, if possible. Oceania’s 2024 world cruise sold out in 30 minutes.
  • Build a relationship with your travel advisor. Knowing your preferences and interests will help him or her find the perfect cruise for you.
  • Consider the ship’s size. Larger ships have a huge variety of things to do; smaller ships provide a more intimate experience.
  • Book a window or balcony cabin. On a long voyage, you’ll appreciate the view.
  • Make sure your passport has at least 6 months extra on it. Some countries won’t let you in if you have fewer months than that.
  • Make sure you have all the required visas. Your travel advisor and the cruise line will help with that.
  • Arrange for things back home. Put financial obligations on auto pay; have someone get your mail and water your plants.
  • Bring prescription medicines in their original packaging. Also bring copies of prescriptions (or take a picture on your phone).
  • Pack clothes for different climates. Check whether you’ll need formal attire.
  • Buy travel insurance, including medical and medical evacuation. Your domestic insurance probably won’t cover you abroad.
  • Experience everything the ship has to offer. Don’t be shy about meeting new people, especially if you’re traveling on your own.

Choosing a world cruise

Cunard Line, Holland America Line , Oceania Cruises , Princess Cruises, Regent Seven Seas Cruises , Royal Caribbean International , Seabourn, and Viking all offer world cruises.

Royal Caribbean is offering a world cruise for the first time with an epic 274-night trip that begins in December 2023; Cunard’s 2025 107-night World Voyage is aboard its new Queen Anne , which will debut in 2024; also in 2025, Holland America Line is offering a Pole to Pole, 133-night, long-duration cruise. Consult with your AAA travel advisor to find the voyage that meets your interests, lifestyle, and budget.

11 Around-The-World Cruises For An Epic Getaway

"Sailing around the world" sounds so romantic, doesn't it? You're sailing to remote islands with like-minded people while chasing sunsets on a distant horizon. Sure, you can just board a plane to, say, New Zealand, but there's something so pure and patient about maritime journeys. Cruises are like floating resorts, which ease their way over the waves. It's the definition of "slow travel."

Amazingly, in the modern world of jet-setting travel, round-the-world cruises do exist. Voyagers visit dozens of ports over the course of their odyssey, each with its own landscape, climate, and personality. There are lots of ways travelers can experience "the trip of a lifetime," but this kind of circumnavigation outmatches just about all of them -- and in style. However, there are a few things to consider before investigating such cruises. First, what does it actually mean to sail "around the world?"

Many companies use this phrase — and sail thousands of nautical miles — but only around a single ocean or hemisphere. Even when ships do sail a distance equivalent to the equator (or more), they rarely return to their precise port of origin. Also, these epic  cruise vacations can be pricey ; the kind of dream that merits cashing in a 401K, and the time commitment is also substantial, meaning months on the water. But for diehard cruisers, crisscrossing the planet could easily be worth the time and money, and if this sounds like you, these 11 cruise lines are scheduled to sail around the world.

For 138 days, passengers frog-hop through the Caribbean, pass through the Panama Canal, make their way to the islands of Polynesia, and skirt Australia, Asia, and Europe before finally dropping their anchor in London. On Viking's World Cruise, you can step ashore in 28 different nations and pick from 57 guided tours. Viking has been a prolific, respected cruise line since its founding in 1997, and this three-quarter circumnavigation sets sail in December 2024, so there's still time to book.

Ships are equipped with spas, luxury dining options, and cabin beds that can be separated or combined, among many other touches. Long before stepping aboard, the Viking website has a virtual 360-degree tour, acquainting future travelers with the ship's staterooms. Viking has thoughtfully put together a reading list to help travelers get a deeper understanding of the countries they will visit, which is especially helpful in little-understood destinations like Moorea and Indonesia. The ship also has a sizable library onboard for further research. This, plus its sophisticated tours and dining options that reflect the culture of each port, may explain Viking's moniker, "the thinking person's cruise." Quality does come at a price, with full passage starting at $59,995.

Ambassador: Grand Round The World Cruise

The Ambiance sets off from London, crosses the Atlantic, passes through Panama, and hits Australia, Southeast Asia, Africa, and South America before pinging back to the United Kingdom. Not only do you cross all the major oceans, but you actually cross the Atlantic three times. Most of these destinations are warm-weather ports, including Sydney at the height of summer. Sunscreen and wide-brimmed hats are recommended on this largely equatorial route.

Ambassador is new to the cruise scene, having been established in the United Kingdom in 2021, and Ambiance is its flagship vessel. Passengers will spend their 120-night voyage in extreme comfort, traveling to 24 countries and 34 ports of call, with top-notch dining, live entertainment, and about 35,000 nautical miles in between. If you can live without a porthole, opting for an  inside cabin on the cruise , then passage starts at the budget-friendly price of $8,500 per person, making this Ambassador cruise one of the most economical on this list. You can also add on drink packages and arrange tours in advance or onboard through an agent or the Ambassador app. You can also explore the ship before you travel, thanks to a 360-degree virtual tour. The 2024 voyage sets sail on June 6.

Regent: World Cruise

The 2026 Regent World Cruise starts in Miami and ends in Miami, which makes it convenient to coordinate, especially if you're already based in the United States. Regent Seven Seas Cruises was founded in 1992 and is a respected brand in the industry.

The ship, the Seven Seas Mariner, also lives up to its name with a formidable 154-night itinerary: the Panama Canal, points along Central America, a dozen Pacific islands, Australia, South Asia, East Africa, and two Atlantic islands before returning to Florida. The Mariner arrives in many well-trod ports like Cape Town and Acapulco, but the route also includes locations that most travelers would have trouble pinpointing on a map: Lautoka, Abidjan, and Male are all names cruisers will become familiar with. To really explore these places, Regent organizes a whopping 431 free shore excursions across six continents, 77 ports, and 47 UNESCO World Heritage Sites.

Sailing nearly 40,000 nautical miles with world-class spas, dining, and entertainment aboard doesn't come cheap. While you'll need to contact Regent to request specific prices, passengers can expect to pay nearly $100,000 for passage. Regent's World Cruise is considered a luxury-level experience with first-class airfare, gratuities, and 24-hour room service included. If this is your tax bracket, just wait until you see the suites.

Royal Caribbean: Ultimate World Cruise

Royal Caribbean has been taking tourists to far-flung destinations since the late 1960s, and it's now one of the most recognizable cruise companies in the world, so naturally Royal Caribbean would host a round-the-world voyage. But even for seasoned travelers, the Ultimate World Cruise is pretty, well, ultimate. Royal Caribbean's world cruise lasts 274 nights and arrives in no fewer than 60 countries. In other words, you'll spend nine months at sea and personally visit more than a quarter of the sovereign nations on Earth. The saga starts and ends in Miami, where the Royal Caribbean is headquartered, which should make arrangements easy.

The biggest bragging right of all: This cruise touches on every single continent, including Elephant Island and Paradise Bay in Antarctica. You'll find yourself in both Americas, Europe, Africa, Asia, the Middle East, and Australia, plus ports you've never even heard of. That said, unless your soul is fueled by pure wanderlust, this itinerary may sound like a lot of cruising, which may explain why Royal Caribbean has divided the journey into four segments. Cruisers don't have to commit to the entire itinerary; they can easily pick from the quarter that most interests them.

By the time you read this, a segment may be the only option left, as the next Ultimate World Cruise departs in December of 2023. The segments are significantly more affordable as well. An interior stateroom for the full cruise costs at least $60,000 per person, while a segment starts at $12,500.

Cunard: Full World Voyage

When the Queen Mary 2 departs from New York City on January 3, 2024, it won't return to this same harbor for 123 nights. The itinerary isn't exactly "around the world," but rather a crossing of the Eastern Hemisphere — twice. Passengers traverse the Atlantic to the United Kingdom, then ease their way down the eastern coast of Africa before beelining for Australia. The ship boomerangs back, with many stops in Asia, a shortcut through the Suez Canal, and a tour of the Mediterranean before heading back to the U.S.

The voyage comes at the heels of Cunard's 100th anniversary, making it the second-oldest company on the list. The Queen Mary 2 has been Cunard's flagship vessel since 2004, and the company has mastered hospitality over the past century, with exceptional dining, luxury suites, and Broadway-quality performances by the Royal Court Theatre. Cunard also takes pride in its children's facilities, encouraging families to travel together, as well as the great English tradition of afternoon tea. Most of the budget cabins on the Queen Mary 2 were already booked at the time of this writing, but cabins with balconies are still available, starting at the not-ludicrous price of $16,899 per person.

Oceania: Around The World In 180 Days

When Junes Verne wrote his novel "Around the World in Eighty Days," his Victorian goal was to travel as quickly as possible. Oceania is now advertising the opposite: This journey takes passengers the long way from Los Angeles to New York City, across the Pacific, around Australia, along the coasts of East Asia, and then up through the Middle East, Mediterranean, Northern Europe, and even Greenland. The itinerary doesn't spend much time in the "global south," so you'll have to visit Africa and South America another time.

The Miami-based Oceania was founded in 2002 and specializes in long-haul cruises, so they know their system well. This cruise may be especially appealing to foodies. The company takes particular pride in its onboard meals as well as in-country Culinary Discovery Tours. Passengers can also take advantage of The Aquamar Spa & Vitality Center, which can orchestrate a special dietary regimen.

Oceania exudes "small-ship luxury" and caps its total number of passengers at 1,250. Everything about the ship is more intimate than found on its larger cousins, from the live entertainment to the duty-free boutiques. If you like a small-town feel, 180 days should be just enough time to meet all your shipmates. If you can't summon the time or (at least) $47,599 by January 2024, the next ship departs in January 2025.

Princess: 111-Day World Cruise

This Princess cruise is another true circumnavigation, starting in Los Angeles and bearing west until the ship arrives back at its original dock. The 111-day cruise starts on January 18, 2024, and includes all three major oceans, both the Suez and Panama Canals, plus 47 ports along the way. The itinerary is light on Asian and African ports and skips South America altogether, but you can still enjoy visits to Australia, the Middle East, and numerous destinations around Europe.

Princess is a hallowed name in the cruise industry. Not only have its ships been sailing the world since the 1960s, but Princess is still one of the most profitable cruise companies in the world. Passengers can expect onboard enrichment programs, award-winning live performances, and rejuvenating treatments at the Lotus Spa. Each port will also bring its own offerings of special excursions, from river rafting to art tours.

With its dependable quality of service and nearly four-month itinerary, it's remarkable that base bookings start at only $15,498. Better yet, if you want to circle the globe with the whole family, this Princess itinerary is a family-friendly cruise and offers youth programming, which is not always the case. If you miss this one, no worries. Three more, of varying lengths, are slated for January 2025.

Holland America Line: Grand World Voyage

Fort Lauderdale is the beginning and end point for the Zuiderdam, which spends 128 days making a complete circle around the globe. Holland America's Grand World Voyage is true to its name. Passengers travel across the Pacific, Atlantic, and Indian Oceans, making port on five continents. Most of its destinations are clustered around Asia and the Mediterranean, and it skips over Australia. But the Voyage is a rare opportunity to sail up the Amazon River, with visits to inland Brazilian cities most travelers would never think to visit.

Holland America began as a shipping and passenger line in the mid-19th Century, and its history of cruising is nearly as old as the concept. The flagship Zuiderdam is a luxury vessel with a swimming pool and sizable theater. It also boasts several diverse dining areas, including the Pinnacle Grill steakhouse, the Italian-themed Canaletto, and the à la carte Lido Market. There's Billboard Onboard, a special room for trivia nights and karaoke, as well as World Stage, a presentation space with a wraparound LED screen. Bookings start at the more expensive rate of $22,499 for an inside cabin, and the 2024 voyage will set sail on January 3, 2024, but you can expect additional Grand World Voyages to be slated in the coming years.

Azamara: World Voyage

Formerly part of the Royal Caribbean fleet, Azamara is now an independent company taking its own journeys. The 2025 World Voyage begins in San Diego and sails westward, across the Pacific, to Australia, Southeast Asia, the Middle East, and the Mediterranean, before passengers disembark in Barcelona. The World Voyage doesn't quite girdle the globe, stopping just short of the Atlantic Ocean, and the only stop in Africa is Giza. But this 155-night expedition should satisfy almost any traveler, especially with its 40 countries and 22 overnights.

Unlike many world cruises, Azamara has divided its full itinerary into segments with clear geographic themes, such as "South Pacific Jewels" and "Mediterranean Icons." These titles can help turn experiences into coherent narratives. For example, "Ancient Pathways" draws a historic and economic line between Mumbai and Athens, along with all ports in between. These themes are coupled with thoughtful excursions, which are often scheduled around local holidays and festivals. The World Voyage for 2024 appears to be sold out, but the 2025 edition sets sail on January 5. Passage starts at a princely $39,999.

Freighter Cruises

Some of us want to keep it simple. No need for late-night show-stoppers, cocktail parties with hundreds of strangers, or daring bets at the roulette wheel. "Freighter cruises" have gone by many names over the years, such as "banana boats" and "cargo cruises," but passengers have hitched rides on commercial ships since the dawn of seafaring. These accommodations come in many forms, and you do have to share your vessel with stacks of massive shipping containers; still, you can expect a comfortable cabin and regular meals, along with friendly and respectful crewmembers from around the world. For travelers with a Jack London streak, the freighter cruise feels raw and adventurous.

The Freighter Travel Club was founded in 1958, and companies like Maris Freighter Cruises and Voyage en Cargo have booked passengers on commercial vessels for years. Maris has arranged round-the-world itineraries in the past, and multi-week journeys are common, as enormous loads are floated from one nation to the next. The pandemic took its toll on this niche industry, and most of these journeys do not precisely travel around the world. But when they're in operation, freighter cruises usually cost a little over $100 per day, and savvy travelers have flexibility in their bookings.

Miray Cruises: Life At Sea

Sure, cruising is fun, but what if you want to turn your ship into a semi-permanent address? Life at Sea Cruises promises three years of luxury seafaring, with stops in 140 countries across all seven continents. By the time you're done with these 382 ports, you'll have more photos to sort through and stories to share than most people will amass in a lifetime.

That sounds life-changing, but we'll have to see whether it's too good to be true. Life at Sea is a brand-new enterprise from Miray Cruises, and the maiden voyage has been fraught with delays. However, at the time of this writing, Life at Sea should get underway by the end of 2023, and most full-voyage passengers should already be sailing by 2024. If all goes well, there are four scheduled embarkation options for travelers who want to hop aboard later on, and more will likely be scheduled.

One of the problems has been the ship itself. For a while, the purchase of the ship was in limbo, pushing back the original sail date. However, the MV Lara now seems ready to sail. The medium-sized vessel has space for 1,266 passengers, with a range of cozy cabins, a wellness center, and a pool deck, among many other amenities. Travelers committed to living at sea for three years should get a lot out of their floating home. Life at Sea is a dreamy concept, so let's hope for calm waters once it finally sets sail.

  • Crystal Cruises: Travel Around The…

The dream of traveling to see the remnants of ancient and epic empires and idyllic islands became a reality in 2020. On January 6, Crystal Cruises departed from Miami, navigating oceans and seas that captivate the senses, while exploring ancient cultures and dreamy beaches.

Travel the seas and oceans

Crystal Cruises traveled to 47 cities from 23 countries, navigating three oceans and five seas in 105 days. During the trip, the Panama Canal was crossed along with nine islands in the Pacific, including Bora Bora and Papeete in Tahiti.

From there the cruise headed towards the fjords of New Zealand, visiting the city of Queenstown, and then headed to the East coast of Australia and stoped at the Mooloolaba and Airlie Beach spas, on the Great Coral Reef.

After visiting Australia the cruise traveled to Thailand, Singapore and Malaysia, with stops in Sri Lanka and Bombay.

Other stops along the way included the kingdom of Oman, Jordan, Egypt and Israel. From there guests traveled to the  Mediterranean Sea, stoping by the islands of Aghios, Siracusa, Larnaca and Nikolaos. Finally the last stop on the trip was Rome, Italy where guests experienced the history and beauty of this classic Italian city.

A dazzling adventure

In presenting the specifics of World Cruise 2020, Tom Wolber, president and CEO of Crystal Cruises, said the trip will commemorate its 25th edition. For this reason, “this annual trip of Crystal Serenity, encompasses many of the experiences that travelers have treasured during this cruise over the years.”

He added that those travelers who booked the World Cruise will enjoy special benefits, including: a welcome dinner on board the Crystal Serenity before departure, an additional private car with a driver between the port and the airport, access to two exclusive events on land, a themed party aboard the world cruise and special gifts.

Options to explore

Another perk is that guests also boarded the cruise on its way through Los Angeles, reducing the number of cruise days, limiting the trip to a distinguished experience between Los Angeles and Papeete, in Tahiti. Other options included solely visiting New Zealand and the Australian coast, or traveling through Asia and the Mediterranean.

Crew member missing at sea during round-the-world cruise

The ship - which can carry 1,400 guests at a time - turned back to join the search for the missing crew member. it had been due to return back to the uk on sunday morning..

By Rachel McGrath, news reporter

Friday 3 May 2024 22:07, UK

A crew member on a 120-day voyage around the world is missing at sea.

Ambassador Cruise Line's Ambience ship was making its final journey from Lisbon, Portugal back to the UK when the crew member was reported missing.

In a statement to Sky News, the British cruise line said Ambience had initially turned back to "retrace her route to the ship's position when the crew member was last seen".

However, it has since been "released by coastguard authorities from the search" and is "continuing on her original course back to the UK".

According to the statement, the crew member, who was from India, was reported missing "shortly after breakfast" this morning while the ship was off Cape Finisterre, on the west coast of Spain .

It said thorough ship-wide searches were conducted for the person, who has not been named, and the local coastguard was informed.

Ambience had departed from Tilbury, Essex on 6 January and is due to return to the port on Sunday.

Ambassador has confirmed its arrival time, initially planned for 9am, will be delayed until the evening.

All events to mark its return have also been cancelled.

"Our immediate priority is to provide full support to all crew members closely affected by this incident," Ambassador said.

"Guests onboard have been kept informed throughout the day and have been advised of recent developments.

"Ambassador remains committed to the safety and wellbeing of all our crew and guests. We are deeply saddened by this incident and our thoughts and prayers are with the friends and family of our colleague at this difficult time."

I worked on cruises for 3 years. Here are 6 things I'd never do on board.

  • I used to work on cruises. After many days at sea, there are things I'd never do on a cruise .
  • I never wear my room key around my neck and try to avoid misnaming the ship.
  • I never buy the drink package or pay for meal upgrades in the main dining room.

Insider Today

I've sailed around the world as a cruise-ship employee , and now I enjoy cruising as a passenger.

I love the salty sea air, waking up in a new country, and lazy days by the pool, but a week at sea could get more complicated this year with cruises predicted to be in high demand .

While fighting a little harder to secure a prime seat on the pool deck, you may as well also avoid some rookie mistakes.

Here are six things I'd never do on a cruise after working on them for three years.

Pay for upgrades in the main dining room

Typically, main dining room meals are included in the cost of a cruise. But in recent years, it's become common for cruise lines to charge guests extra if they want to upgrade to "supplementary" items like lobster or certain steaks.

I know $12 may not seem like much for a steak or lobster tail at dinner, but the cost of the cruise is supposed to include your food.

So, even though I enjoy lobster, I stick with the items without the upcharges.

Buy the drink package

I enjoy a piña colada by the pool or a Manhattan while listening to a jazz set after dinner. Even so, it doesn't make sense for me to pay in advance for 12 to 15 cocktails a day.

I've done the math on typical unlimited drink packages , and the cost simply isn't worth it for me.

This is especially true with a port-heavy itinerary. If I've gone ashore to explore all day, that means I'm not sidled up to the bar slurping down alcoholic slushies.

Related stories

I prefer to buy as I go and take advantage of happy hour and other drink specials that are available on certain cruise lines. I also check the beverage policy in advance and bring on my own wine, if allowed.

Touch shared contact surfaces with my fingers

Fellow guests will never see me touching the elevator buttons with my fingertips. Knuckles and elbows do the trick.

Some cruise lines are better than others at wiping down commonly touched surfaces, but I don't take any chances. I avoid touching things others frequently touch, and I wash my hands frequently.

This strategy has worked for me, as I have never contracted norovirus, even when it was running rampant on a ship I was on. It's quite contagious and can linger on your fingertips even after using hand sanitizer . I'd definitely rather be safe than sorry.

Wear my room key around my neck

I never walk around the ship with my room key around my neck, and I especially never do this when on land.

There are two reasons for this. First, I see many passengers using the room keys dangling from their necks to flaunt their cruise loyalty status . It just looks pretentious.

The sophisticated cruisers with the highest status, with the most days at sea, never show off their fancy room keys.

That's because they know the more important reason — safety. In port, that room key bouncing off your chest looks like an invitation to be robbed. It screams, "I have money! Come and take it from me."

Misname the ship

English is a funny language that has its quirks. Naming conventions make that even more complicated.

Ships have proper names, and so do not require a definite article. For example, "Tomorrow I am embarking on Discovery Princess," or "I enjoyed scenic cruising on MS Westerdam."

If you want to look like a savvy sailor, learn to drop the "the!"

Plan my port-day itinerary so tight that I may not make it back to the ship on time

Oh, the recurring nightmares I've had about not making it back to the ship on time during a port day.

I've never missed a sail away, but I have cut it too close at times and have had to run down a pier or two. Just recently, as a passenger, my taxi driver got lost returning our group to the port at night.

When I realized how late we were going to be, I forked over $8 per minute to be connected with the ship. I pleaded with them to wait for us. It was a sprint through the port to get back on and we received quite a scolding from the first officer.

That time, we got lucky. In the future, I'll be giving myself more time than I think I need to make it back.
