Carved out of Bihar in 2000, after years of agitation by its largely Adivasi population, Jharkhand yields almost forty percent of India ’s minerals, but suffers from extreme poverty, lawlessness and Naxalite (Maoist guerrilla) activity, and is rarely visited by tourists. Although the area around the capital, Ranchi, and the main tourist attraction, Palamau (Betla) National Park, are now safe to visit, it’s vital to check the security situation before venturing out of those areas, and you should avoid travelling at night by road anywhere in the state.

The Holy City of Varanasi

The flat, sunburnt plains of the Ganges River are India's breadbasket: a densely populated area, it is home to many of the country's greatest sights. See Delhi and all its treasures, then fly to Varanasi, the most sacred stretch of the Ganges and one of India's most intense and atmospheric places.

Jharkhand’s capital, Ranchi was Bihar’s summer capital under the colonial regime, and must be the most laidback state capital in the country. Its main hub is Firayalal Chowk, two kilometres north of the train station, a busy road junction now renamed Albert Ekka Chowk after a hero of the 1971 Indo-Pakistani War whose statue now stands in the middle of it.

Ranchi’s top shopping and commercial thoroughfare, Main Road (officially Mahatma Gandhi Marg), runs north and south from here, crossing the rail line some 500m west of the station.

Ranchi itself isn’t exactly thick with sights, but there are a couple of places worth seeing within easy striking distance. Jagganathpur Temple 11 km southwest of town.

Like its more famous counterpart in Puri, the Jagganathpur Temple is dedicated to the triad of Jagganath, Balabhadra and Subhadra, and like the one in Puri, it has a Rath Yatra festival in June or July in which their images are hauled out on chariots, attracting thousands of devotees.

Built on a hilltop and originally dating from 1691, the temple even looks like a smaller version of the one in Puri, with a 30-metre-high daul (main tower). Non-Hindus are allowed to go inside.

Palamau (Betla) National Park is the main draw in Jharkhand but the state has plenty of other bits to do as well.

#1 Explore Palamau National Park

In a remote corner of Jharkhand, the beautiful sal forests of the Palamau National Park cover around eight hundred square kilometres of hilly terrain. If you’re lucky, you may still see elephants, nilgai (antelope), gaur (bison) and wild boar here.

The park is open all year, but October to April is the best time to visit, although it can be rather chilly then, especially in the morning.

Most visitors take a jeep safari to explore the park. However, make sure you check the situation before you visit — in recent years, Palamau has seen movements of local guerrillas who spill in from the troubled north-eastern forests bordering Chhattisgarh, and the park can sometimes be closed to tourists.

#2 Visit Jagganathpur Temple

Built on a hilltop and originally dating from 1691, the temple even looks like a smaller version of the one in Puri, with a 30-metre-high daul (main tower). Unlike the one in Puri, however, non-Hindus are allowed to go inside.

#3 Find peace at Baba Baidyanath Dham

Nestled in the town of Deoghar, Baba Baidyanath Dham is one of the most revered pilgrimage sites in India. This ancient temple complex is dedicated to Lord Shiva. The centerpiece of the complex is the Baidyanath Temple, which houses one of the twelve Jyotirlingas, considered highly auspicious in Hindu mythology, and has intricate carvings adorning its walls.

During the month of Shravan, the temple witnesses an influx of devotees who undertake a challenging barefoot pilgrimage to seek divine blessings. Beyond its religious significance, Baba Baidyanath Dham offers a serene ambiance and a chance to delve into the spiritual heritage of India. It is a place where ancient traditions and faith converge, leaving visitors with a profound sense of devotion and tranquility.

#4 Bathe beneath the thundering Dassam Falls

Located near the Taimara village, about 40 kilometers from Ranchi, Dassam Falls is a mesmerizing natural spectacle that sees water from the Kanchi River thunder down from a height of 44 meters, creating a stunning display of beauty and power.

Surrounded by lush greenery and rugged cliffs, Dassam Falls offers a tranquil retreat from the hustle and bustle of city life. It is an ideal place for a picnic, where visitors can relax amidst the serene ambiance and revel in the beauty of nature.

#5 Wander through Patratu Valley

Located near the Patratu Dam, Patratu Valley offers breathtaking vistas of rolling hills, dense forests, and shimmering lakes, creating a haven for nature enthusiasts.

As you venture into the valley, you'll be greeted by a panoramic view of lush green meadows dotted with colorful wildflowers. The tranquil atmosphere invites you to unwind and immerse yourself in the pristine beauty of the surroundings. The calm waters of Patratu Lake reflect the azure sky, creating a mesmerizing sight that leaves a lasting impression.

Nature trails crisscross the valley, allowing visitors to explore its hidden treasures. From hiking and birdwatching to capturing stunning photographs, Patratu Valley offers endless opportunities for outdoor enthusiasts. Whether you choose to relax by the lakeside or embark on an adventure, this scenic destination promises an unforgettable experience in the lap of nature.

#6 Picnic in Jubilee Park

Located in the heart of Jamshedpur, Jubilee Park is a lush urban oasis that offers respite from bustling city life. Spread across 237 acres, this meticulously landscaped park is a favorite among locals and tourists alike, providing a serene and verdant escape.

The park's vibrant floral displays, manicured lawns, and shimmering lakes create a picturesque setting that is perfect for leisurely strolls or picnics with loved ones. As you explore the park, you'll come across various attractions, including a musical fountain, an amusement park, and picnicking families.

Jubilee Park is not just a recreational space; it also pays homage to the visionary industrialist, Jamsetji Tata, whose statue stands proudly at the entrance. It serves as a reminder of his contribution to the development of the city and the well-being of its residents.

#7 Find Nirvana at Parasnath Mountain

Rising majestically amidst the forests of Giridih district, Parasnath Mountain is a revered pilgrimage site for Jains and a captivating destination for nature lovers. Towering at an impressive height of 1,350 meters, this mountain is considered the holiest in the Jain tradition, believed to be the place where 20 of the 24 Jain Tirthankaras attained Nirvana.

Embarking on a pilgrimage to Parasnath Mountain is a spiritual journey that offers a glimpse into the deep-rooted Jain traditions and beliefs. The mountain is dotted with numerous Jain temples, each with its unique architectural style and religious significance. The most famous among them is the Shikharji Temple, which marks the spot where the 20th Tirthankara achieved enlightenment.

Besides its religious significance, Parasnath Mountain boasts awe-inspiring natural beauty. Dense forests carpet its slopes, creating a haven for wildlife and providing an excellent opportunity for trekking and hiking enthusiasts. The panoramic views from the summit

When it comes to choosing the best cities to stay in Jharkhand, most travellers will opt for Ranchi, the capital city. However, Jamshedpur and Netarhat are good alternatives. Here’s where to stay.

A good bus and train network makes exploring Jharkhand a breeze, however many travellers will opt for tours of Palamau National Park because of the convenience.

The state is well-connected by rail, with major cities and destinations linked by train. Note that the nearest railway station for Palamau National Park is at Daltonganj, but train timings are not tremendously convenient and it’s better to get there from Ranchi by bus.

From Daltonganj you need to take a shared jeep, a bus, or an auto for the 25km journey to the park’s entry point at Betla.

Jharkhand boasts a reliable and extensive bus network, making it a cost-effective option for travel. State-run buses, as well as private operators, ply on various routes, connecting major cities, towns, and remote areas.

To get a taste of Jharkhand's essence, a minimum of 5 to 7 days is recommended. This time frame allows you to explore the state's capital, Ranchi, and its immediate surroundings.

You can venture beyond Ranchi and explore the mesmerising waterfalls, lush forests, and intriguing tribal villages that define the essence of the state. Discover the awe-inspiring Dassam Falls, witness the enchantment of the Hundru Falls, and embark on a soul-stirring visit to the serene Parasnath Hill, one of the most revered Jain pilgrimage sites in India.

The monsoon hits Jharkhand in early June, lasting until September, and the very best time to visit is immediately after that, in October and November. November is also the time of the Sonepur Mela.

Jharkhand can get quite chilly from December through February, especially at night, although daytime temperatures remain comfortable. From March, temperatures start to rise and the heat then gets progressively stickier and more debilitating until the monsoon breaks it.

7 Day Uttarakhand Road Trip Itinerary

7 Day Uttarakhand Road Trip Itinerary

The Best of Uttarakhand in One Week

Uttarakhand Tourism saw a sharp rise in popularity the last couple of years. This northern state in India is a cornucopia of many hill stations and tourist attractions. There is so much to do and so much to see as Uttarakhand is blessed with natural beauty – jungles, rivers, snow-clad mountains and an inherent sense of divinity. The state is also called “Devbhumi” (“The Land of the Gods”) as it is home to many highly revered shrines like  Badrinath, Kedarnath  and so many others. And then there is offbeat Uttarakhand that we keep exploring whenever we can find an opportunity.

It can take a whole book to write about what are the best things to do in Uttarakhand . But that is for another day. Here is our humble attempt to create an Uttarakhand guide about what all can you do in 7 days, through this 7 Day Uttarakhand Travel Itinerary and Guide . We have tried to include destinations that you can reach within 6-7 hours of journey from each other.

  • How to reach Uttarakhand

The best way to reach Uttarakhand from any part of the world is by starting from Delhi. Delhi is very well-connected with Uttarakhand via road, rail and air. Though there are 5 airports in Uttarakhand, you may or may not get a direct flight. Once you are in Delhi, you can opt for road transport like a rented cab, bus or a self driven car. From our experience, Uttarakhand road trips are most convenient to reach some of the offbeat places.

Day 1 – Delhi to Haridwar

Day 2 – haridwar to mussoorie, day 3 – mussoorie to chakrata, day 4 – chakrata to lansdowne, day 5 – lansdowne to nainital, day 6 – kausani day trip, day 7 – nainital to jim corbett national park , day 8 – back to delhi, 7 day uttarakhand road trip itinerary – summary, share this:.

Haridwar is famous for River Ganges. It is a temple town in Uttarakhand and is famous for its Ganga Aarti that is performed every morning and evening. One can cover the 200 kms odd strech from Delhi to Haridwar within 5 hours and the road condition is good. The stretch is full of eating options like  dhabas , hotels and cafes. The good part is Haridwar is in the Himalayan foothills so one can expect decent weather.

jharkhand trip plan

Things to do in Haridwar include Ganga Aarti  especially in the evening. It’s a spectacle like no other. Thousands of devotees gather around the river banks to offer prayers to Goddess Ganga. Priests with lamps in their hands chant mantras and the atmosphere looks blissful. There are myriad temples in Haridwar each with a different story. You can also visit Rishikesh from Haridwar which is barely 45 minutes drive and there are some famous temples and ashram in Rishikesh. The famous Beatles Ashram is also in Rishikesh. One can opt for hourly meditation and spa sessions in Rishikesh as well. This zone is also the most popular water rafting zone in North India.

Haridwar to Mussoorie is around 85kms and is not more than a 3 hours drive. Mussoorie is also called the “Queen of Hills” and hence from Day 2 your trip is going to be mostly on high terrain. Mussoorie is immensely popular with tourists because of many reasons. For one, Mussoorie has great weather throughout the year. Further, it has access to all sorts of hotel options from basic to luxury, from family friendly places to hostels and dormitories. Thirdly, this place has fantastic connectivity to other locations in Uttarakhand.

jharkhand trip plan

Things to do in Mussoorie include pottering down the famous Mall Road , trekking to Char Dukan , St Paul’s Church and early morning walk to camel’s back point. While trekking, do look out for antique and cobbler shops that make handmade shoes on order. A visit to hill resort Rockby’s Manor and savouring cheese omelette at Lovely Omelette Shop are also highly recommended. You may shop for souvenirs from the Mall Road of Mussoorie. It is full of gift options for all tastes and budgets.

jharkhand trip plan

You will drive 100kms and reach Chakrata in a span of 3 hours  from Mussoorie and see a completely different side of Uttarakhand here. While Mussoorie is extremely touristy, Chakrata is quite the opposite. It is an offbeat place and you may not see many tourists here. But it is breathtakingly beautiful and has retained its tranquillity. Chakrata is less explored but there are also many things one can do here in addition to soaking in the natural beauty. The most popular activity here is to visit Tiger Falls. These falls create sounds of roaring tigers when water drops from top of the hill to the pond at the bottom. It is a perfect picnic spot and you can frolic in the water. Apart from the waterfalls one can also visit  Mahsu Temple and Budher Caves.

For adventure lovers there are arrangements for water rappelling at Kimona Falls.

Start the day early and within 6-7 hours of driving from Chakrata, covering around 250 kms, you will reach Lansdowne, a sleepy hill station in Uttarakhand. Lansdowne is essentially a Cantonment Town, and is home to the eilte  Garhwal Rifles of the Indian Army and hence you can expect peace, cleanliness and order. It is one of our most favorite places in Uttarakhand, no wonder we have visited it many times.

jharkhand trip plan

Things to do in Lansdowne include visiting Bulla Taal , a manmade lake which almost looks like a set from Indiana Jones movie, St Mary’s Church and trek up to Tiffin Top . We would highly recommend doing all these things by foot. All these things are under one hour trekking from each other and you will be able to absorb the beauty of Lansdowne better. Don’t forget to savour the famous chocolate  burfi  and Baal Mithai  – the specialty desserts of this region . We bet you will get these packed for friends and family.

A 6-7 hour drive covering around 250 kms will take you from Lansdowne to Nainital , which is perhaps the busiest hill station in Uttarakhand. Just like Mussoorie, Nainital also gets tourists all through the year. Summer vacations are the peak season in Nainital and if you don’t like crowds you should avoid holiday months for visiting this place. Nevertheless, it is a beautiful hill station any day.

jharkhand trip plan

The Naini Lake surrounded by green mountains is the heart of this place. Boating in Naini Lake is just one of the things to do here. Apart from this, you can visit the Naina Devi Temple , enjoy cable car rides and visit Eco Caves Garden . The Mall Road is a perfect place for shopping. Look out for hand carved wax candles here. This is a local handicraft and the candles come in all sorts of shapes and sizes. We would also highly recommend breakfast and bakery items at The Sakleys, A Mountain Cafe on Mall Road.

Don’t check out from your hotel at Nainital when you start for Kausani the next morning. Kausani can be visited from Nainital and one is advised to come back the same night since there are not many lodging options in Kausani. The driving time from Nainital to Kasauni is less than 4 hours and Kausani will give you a much-needed break from the humdrum of Nainital. Start early in the morning and you can visit Neem Karouli Ashram and  Katarmal Sun Temple on route to Kausani. If you love history, Katarmal Sun Temple may turn out to be a spectacular experience.

jharkhand trip plan

Kausani is a quaint little hamlet in Uttarakhand and would be loved by travellers who like peace and solitude. Apart from watching the valley from the binoculars from the highest point here, one must visit Gandhiji’s Anashakti Ashram in Kausani. It is a beautiful ashram cum museum displaying Gandhi memorabilia. Kausani is a perfect place to just be and not do anything. Just be one with nature and be awed by the variety of brightly coloured wild flowers. Start on your way back around sunset and you’ll be in Nainital by dinner time.

jharkhand trip plan

Another interesting alternative, is to head out of Nainital, and drive to Bhimtal, an hour away, and check into Fredy’s Bungalow – A Colonial style bungalow , for the night, surrounded by nature, which is perfect for disconnecting and reconnecting with nature. Among the many things that you can do, the best of the lot is to go hiking which also involves plenty of bird watching.

Jim Corbett National Park, the last destination on this 7 Day Uttarakhand Road Trip Itinerary, is barely 2 hours from Nainital and this would be your drive downhill back to the plains. Jim Corbett National Park, which also happens to be one of the Best National Parks in India , is famous for its jungle safari which happens early mornings and evenings. Most of the accommodation here are resorts, such as Aahana Resort and there are barely any standalone restaurants.

It is highly advisable to pre book your jungle safari as the better zones get full very easily. If you are lucky you may see tigers in the jungle but it highly depends on which zone are you in and which month you visit Jim Corbett. Don’t focus too much on tiger sightings and enjoy the deer, nilgai, and host of birds like kingfisher that would surely come your way. The overall safari experience is beautiful.

jharkhand trip plan

Apart from jungle safari, one can go for a village tour on foot or on a bicycle that your resort may provide. Since it’s your last day in Uttarakhand we would highly recommend taking it easy and Jim Corbett is a perfect place for that. The place has a very relaxed and laid-back vibe. Being forest area travellers are not advised to venture out in the night. That is the best time to chill in a pool or rejuvenate in a spa inside the resort.

Start after breakfast from Jim Corbett National Park and after a 5 hours drive, you will be in Delhi with your cameras full of beautiful pictures and your hearts full of amazing memories.

Google Takes Next Step in AI Trip Planning

Justin Dawes , Skift

May 14th, 2024 at 4:57 PM EDT

Google is fully in its Gemini era. That’s what executives repeated as they showcased how AI pulls information from across its products to create detailed trip plans and more.

Justin Dawes

Google is diving head first into AI-powered trip planning.

Gemini Advanced , the paid version of the  Gemini  generative AI chatbot, will soon be able to build travel itineraries with a simple prompt in easy-to-understand language.

It’s also strengthening trip-planning options for AI Overviews, the AI feature it released this year for a traditional Google search. AI Overviews has been available only to U.S. users that opt in, but it’s being released to all U.S. users this week and more countries soon.

The search giant revealed the plans on Tuesday at its annual developer conference, Google I/O. Or, as Google CEO Sundar Pichai called it: “Google’s version of The Eras Tour with fewer costume changes.”

To try early versions of these new tools, opt in to AI experiments with Google Search Labs .

Skift will perform its own tests of the updated tools as soon as they are available.

Itinerary Building in Gemini Advanced

Sissie Hsiao, vice president of Google and general manager for Gemini experiences, used a travel example to illustrate how the chatbot is taking a step closer toward the goal of being a “true AI assistant.”

The example started with a prompt: “My family and I are going to Miami for Labor Day. My son loves art and my husband really wants fresh seafood. Can you pull my flight and hotel information from Gmail and help me plan the weekend?”

In the background, the AI creates potential travel options from multiple sources of information. “The result is a personalized vacation plan,” Hsiao said.

Looking at the flight itinerary, the AI knows it needs to create a plan within the length of the trip and allow time before and after each flight.

The flight in the example lands at 4:28 p.m., so the AI doesn’t recommend a big activity but rather three fresh seafood restaurants for 7:30 p.m. It estimates a 20-minute drive from the airport, an hour to drop off bags and freshen up, and 15 minutes to walk to dinner.

The next day is full of proposed activities. Make an adjustment, such as changing the start time, and the AI automatically repopulates its plan.

The trip-planning capability is coming to Gemini Advanced this summer.

Google released Gemini Advanced in February with its most up-to-date AI model at the time. The platform is now getting an upgrade with Google’s latest AI model, Gemini 1.5 Pro, available in 35 languages.

Travel Recommendations in Google Search

Google showed how users can get upgraded tourism recommendations through the traditional search bar.

The upgraded tech is better at answering multi-faceted questions, said Liz Reid, vice president of Search, during the conference.

A prompt that Google used as an example: “What are good options for a day out in Dallas with the kids? Recommend some ice cream shops near each option.”

The first option was the Dallas Zoo, and it listed three ice cream shops nearby.

The other options were Dallas Arboretum and the Perot Museum of Nature and Science, along with three ice cream shop options for each. There was also a map below the results that showed each of their locations.

“Research that might have taken you minutes or even hours, Google can now do on your behalf in just seconds,” Reid said.

Reid demonstrated the capability during the conference with an example of searching for a yoga studio in Boston .

There was a video later with a quick clip showing the above example.

Travel Inspiration in Google Search

Google is also upgrading Search to respond with fuller recommendations during the brainstorming stage, when the prompts are typically less specific. The response includes groups of suggestions organized by the AI.

“What you get here breaks AI out of the box, and it brings it to the whole page,” Reid said.

The example prompt: “Anniversary celebration dinner places Dallas.”

The AI responded with several groups of restaurants based on themes it created: Anniversary-worthy restaurants, restaurants with live music and intimate settings, and historic charm and elegance.

The model also uses contextual factors, like time of the year, Reid said. Since it’s warm now in Dallas, it included a group of options for “romantic” rooftop dining dates.

These AI-organized results pages for brainstorming searches are coming soon for dining and recipes, then expanding to later to include hotels and more.

From saving on gas to driving with kids, here's your ultimate road trip planner

jharkhand trip plan

"Easy Travel” is a 10-part series focusing on how to reduce bumps during vacations, anticipate roadblocks and be ready when things aren’t going your way. If you'd like to contribute to our future reporting and share your experience as a source, you can click here to fill out this quick form .

Ina Daly has spent most of her life on the road.

“My dad was a truck driver and that led me to becoming a truck driver,” she said. “What we do in a day, on a daily job would be like a long road trip to most people.”

With nearly 40 years of driving for freight transportation services provider XPO and numerous industry accolades under her belt, including grand champion at this year’s Arizona Truck Driving Championship , Daly is a pro. She’s also a mom and a grandmother who’s happy to share her experiences to make everyone’s road trips better.

“Some of the things I'm telling you are what we truckers tell our family members,” she said. “I've had a lot of accomplishments in my career and going to the National Truck Driving Championships (this month) is a reward, but the bigger reward is being able to share some things … that have the potential to save lives.”

What to do before a long drive

“Make sure that your vehicle’s road trip ready,” Daly said. ”Really pay close attention to your tires, your coolant, your fan belt.”

She notes tire dealers often offer free inspections to ensure tires are properly inflated and undamaged.

AAA spokesperson Aixa Diaz advises getting the whole car serviced before hitting the road.

“If you're a car person and you can, do that yourself at home, by all means,” she said. Otherwise, she recommends getting the oil changed and battery and tires checked professionally.

To save time and avoid stress, Diaz also suggests filling up on gas the night before leaving and making hotel reservations well in advance, noting that many hotels allow cancellations without penalty up until the day beforehand.

What do you need before a road trip?

It’s always good to keep an emergency kit with supplies like first aid, a flashlight and extra batteries, and basic tools in the vehicle.

“You want to make sure that if you do have a tire issue, you have the proper tools and jacks in your vehicle to be able to change it,” Daly said. She said warning signals like reflective triangles can also warn other drivers to steer clear in the event of a breakdown.

For road trips, both she and Diaz recommend shelf-stable snacks like protein bars that won’t melt and plenty of water. “Don't think that a bottle or two for everybody is enough,” Daly said. “You've got to have, you know, five or six bottles for everyone.”

Diaz also recommends wet wipes, blankets during the winter, and any time-sensitive medication or pet food that might be needed in the event of an extended delay.

“These things ideally wouldn't take up too much room in your trunk but they're just good to have in case of an emergency,” Diaz said. “Just think, ‘If I were stuck for a long time, what would keep me comfortable until I was able to (get) help?’”

A printed map and a general sense of the route can also help in case there GPS hiccups or a phone dies.  AAA’s free TripTik planner can help travelers plot their trips in advance and find rest stops, lodging, food and gas along the way. And its free Gas Cost Calculator can help locate the cheapest average gas prices for drivers when it’s time to refuel.

'Get out there': This mom is using a never-ending road trip to inspire Black family travel

What I should know before a road trip?

“Everything can be a distraction in the car – the radio, the kids, etc. But the phone is a big one,” Daly advised. “When you’re driving, that thing should not ever be in your hand.”

More than 3,500 people were killed on U.S. roads in 2021 because of distracted driving, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration .

Daly also recommends watching out for distracted drivers.

“You can tell a distracted driver by their fluctuating speed,” she warned. “They're drifting in their lane. Their head is looking down instead of focusing on the road. You want to give those people a wide berth.”

How long will a road trip take?

Road trips always take longer than expected because of traffic, construction and other things that arise en route.

Diaz says to expect at least an hour longer than whatever the GPS predicts. Daly recommends leaving at least two hours early.

“You don't want that stressful drive,” Daly said. “You’re hurrying. That lends to bad driving behaviors like tailgating and speeding, which leads to accidents. Don’t put yourself in that situation.”

How many hours a day should you drive on a road trip?

“It just varies so much from person to person, how long they’re comfortable driving,” Diaz said. “We want to err on the side of safety. We want people to be safe on the roads and drive the speed limit and not rush it, but everybody's different.”

Switching out drivers can lighten the load, but no matter who is driving, Daly said, “If you're starting to feel a little, less attentive, maybe a little fatigued, it’s time to take a break.”

What time is best to drive?

“We always recommend, especially during the holidays, leave early in the morning,” Diaz said. “The later you leave in the day, the worse it's going to be because a lot of times during the week … you're going to mix with those commuters on the road.”

“Some people enjoy night driving,” she added. “Once you get to like 8 p.m., 9 p.m. traffic comes down a lot.”

However, she noted drivers who leave in the evening should watch out for fatigue and plan to drive less than if they started fresh in the morning.

How do you take a good road trip with kids?

When possible, Daly recommends having a designated passenger to help with kids so the driver can focus on the road.

Another important thing is to keep seatbelts on the whole way.

“Kids have a tendency to take those off,” Daly said. “Make sure they stay buckled up. I've seen some horrible things out there.”

'I just want to see more of us': The importance of seeing people like you while traveling

What do kids need on a road trip?

Entertainment helps pass the time, but it doesn’t have to be digital. There are all sorts of screen-free road trip games .

Diaz recommends printing a map or list of sites or cities for kids to watch for along the way.

“You know, yell it out or mark it on your sheet,” she said. “Have some crayons in the car with them so they're following along on the trip, and they feel like they're part of it.”

“Point out historical landmarks and scenery; enjoy nature,” Daly echoed. “That's one of the things that we truck drivers love about our jobs is we get to see the country and nature.”

Stop at points of interest every few hours or simply for everyone to stretch their legs.

And for those times when kids are on screens, make sure to pack car chargers.

What is the best way to save gas?

Don’t speed.

“Fuel economy peaks at around 50 miles per hour on most cars, and then it drops off as the speeds increase,” Diaz said. “You think, ‘OK, if I just go 70, I'm going to get there faster, and it'll be better,’ but essentially, you're just wasting gas at that point." Fuel economy can be increased by as much as 15% by reducing highway speeds by 5 to 10 miles per hour, she said.

Don’t idle unnecessarily either, like at rest stops.

“Your car engine consumes about a quarter to a half a gallon of fuel per hour while it's idling,” she said. “But a warm engine only takes about 10 seconds’ worth of fuel to restart, so if it's safe to do so, just shut off your engine.”

Story continues below.

What happens if my tire blows out?

“When you blow a tire, kaboom, it freaks you out. Do not panic,” Daly said. “Don't slow down abruptly or brake hard or jerk the wheel because that will cause you to lose control and have an accident.”

“Just focus on steering,” she added. “Slow very gradually, off to the side of the road in a safe area, and you won’t have any issue from your blown tire.”

How do you drive around semitrucks?

“Be aware of our needs and limitations,” Daly said. “You know we’re big. We need a lot of space around us. We have big blind spots. … If you can’t see the truck driver’s face in the mirrors of the truck, the truck driver can’t see you.”

She advised against passing on the right.

“If you have to pass quickly, don’t linger over there. We see people driving over there for the shade (and it) puts us in a very dangerous situation,” she said. “And don’t cut in front of us and then hit your breaks. People don’t like to follow a truck because they can’t see around us, so they pass us and then cut in front of us.”

“It takes away that safety cushion we leave in front of us,” she added. “When you see all that space in front of a truck, that's not for your convenience so that you can pass us and cut into it. That’s for our safety and yours.”

By the same token, she advised fellow drivers to leave plenty of space in front of their own vehicles, so they have enough room to stop quickly in an emergency. If another driver cuts into that space, she suggested, “Take a break. Slow down again. Recreate that space. Bite your tongue and think pure thoughts.”

That last tip may not be so easy.

How to Plan an Unforgettable Trip to Rome, According to Local Experts

Whether your tastes swing towards art and architecture, high-end shopping and dining, or browsing markets and munching on street food, it’s an exciting time to visit Rome.

Elizabeth Heath is a writer and editor living on a hill in Umbria, from where she writes about travel in Italy, the rest of Europe, and farther afield.

Best Hotels and Resorts

Best things to do, best shopping, best nightlife, best restaurants, best time to visit, how to get there, how to get around.

Alexander Spatari/Getty Images

For me, the Eternal City is eternally fabulous. No matter how crowded it gets, how dysfunctional its current government is, or how many bad pizzas there are in ratio to good ones, Rome remains. It’s persisted and resisted for more than 2,775 years, and even at this ripe old age, Rome is still evolving.

It’s an exciting time to visit Rome, and even for people who live there, the flurry of post-pandemic activity in the travel sector has been dizzying. “Archaeological sites that have been fenced-off for years are now accessible to visitors, there’s a host of innovative new tour options, and I can barely keep up with the number of absolutely stunning luxury hotels that have opened ,” says Travel + Leisure contributor and Rome resident Laura Itzkowitz, who also writes about Rome in her newsletter, The New Roman Times . “It’s a delight to see so much investment in the city and so many new ways to experience it.”

No matter how you decide to see the city or whether your tastes swing towards art and architecture, high-end shopping and dining, or browsing markets and munching on street food, Rome gives you options. We asked Itzkowitz and some other Rome travel experts to weigh in on their favorite places and experiences to recommend in eternal Rome.

Top 5 Can’t Miss

  • Swoon over the cityscape. Few things are as romantic as Rome at night from a vantage point like the Fontana dell'Acqua Paola or the Capitoline Hill.
  • See marble turn to flesh. At the Galleria Borghese, Bernini’s lifelike sculptures are a gazillion times more impressive than what you remember from art history class.
  • Do the Full Monty of Italian dining. Bring your appetite and go big, with antipasto, pasta, main course, and dessert at a homey trat like Da Enzo da 29.
  • Get up early. At least once during your stay, request an early wake-up call to discover a deserted city. ArcheoRoma can lead the way.
  • Shop at a market. If you don’t buy produce, trinkets, or street food at a real Roman market like Testaccio or Campo de’ Fiore, have you been to Rome?

Palazzo Vilòn

If there’s one thing our experts agree on, it’s that Palazzo Vilòn luxury apartment is the most sumptuous new address in Rome. Nicole Bono, luxury travel and events planner with Bono Events International says, “When they open the doors for you, your jaw will drop.” Gary Portuesi, a T+L Top Travel Advisor with Authentic Explorations , says that at Vilòn, “you get to live like a Roman aristocrat in an intimate palazzo in the best neighborhood.”

Singer Palace

“I'm in love with the Singer Palace these days,” says Bono of this 19th-century beauty in the former Singer sewing machine headquarters. “It's family-owned, and that is felt with every single detail in this property. You're truly cuddled from the moment you walk in the door till your last Spritz before you leave.”

Hotel de Russie, a Rocco Forte Hotel

T+L readers’ favorite hotel in Rome is also a hit with Portuesi, who raves about its “with its unique and secluded Mediterranean tiered secret garden walking distance from the Spanish Steps, Fontana di Trevi and Piazza del Popolo.” The hotel’s Stravinskij Bar remains one of Rome’s most elegant locales for a cocktail.

Hotel Mediterraneo

Every time I exit Termini Station, I sigh with comfort at the sight of this trusty four-star in a fascist-era Art Deco building. Stepping through the doors feels like stepping back in time, in a good way, with old-school service, a delightful lobby bar, and humongous suites, some with skyline views of Rome.

Christopher Larson/Travel + Leisure

Basilica di San Clemente

For a real sense of how Rome’s history is layered like a lasagna, head to this church near the Colosseum — or rather, underneath it. An atmospheric archaeological area beneath the not-too-shabby 12th-century church holds an even earlier Christian church, which lies on top of a pagan altar and an ancient Roman apartment building.

ArcheoRunning

If you’re a runner, join archaeologist, guide, and running enthusiast Isabella Calidonna on an early morning jogging tour through Rome's truly magical empty streets. (Trust me, it’s okay if you run slowly.) If you’re not a runner, don’t sweat it — she’ll be happy to do the same informative tour at a walking pace.

Via del Governo Vecchio

Spend a late afternoon vintage shopping on my favorite street in Rome , then stick around for an aperitivo, followed by pizza and gelato. If that trifecta of Roman drinking and eating isn’t enough, this splendid street near Piazza Navona has a buzzy but manageable bar-hopping scene.

Largo Argentina

Want to stand at the very site (or very near it, anyway) where Julius Caesar lost his life? Long visible only from street level and best known as a cat sanctuary among picturesque ruins, the archaeological area at Largo Argentina site is now open to the public, thanks to funding from Bulgari . The Curia of Pompeo, where Caesar got shivved, stands near the ruins of four ancient temples.

Galleria Borghese

Reserve your tickets in advance and prepare to be overwhelmed by the beauty here, both of the ornate salons of this noble palace turned art museum, and the amazing works inside, including Bernini’s spellbinding "Rape of Proserpine" and several Caravaggio paintings.

Testaccio Market

This sprawling covered market in the working-class Testaccio neighborhood offers an authentic slice of Roman daily life. Even if you’re not shopping for clothing, produce or fresh fish, stop for some of Rome’s best street food, especially a suppli at Food Box or a drippy panino at Modri e Vai.

Itzkowitz is a fan of this artisan jeweler in Monti and even had owner Antonio design a pair of custom earrings for her wedding. If you don’t have time for a made-to-order bauble, the shop has many original designs, many of which feature colorful gemstones.

Essenzialmente Laura

For a real only-in-Rome gift or souvenir, Portuesi refers friends and clients to the perfumery of Laura Bosetti Tonatto, who’s made custom scents for celebrities, royals, and aristocrats, including Queen Elizabeth II. “You can create your own perfect perfume or find the scent you love,” he says.

La Bottega del Marmoraro

It’s hard to imagine a store like this anywhere else — a tiny workshop on pretty Via Margutta where stone carver Sandro Fiorentino tinks away at marble plaques by hand. “I love to bring out-of-town visitors here,” says Itzkowitz. “Prices start at around 15 euros, which means you can find an affordable, handmade souvenir.”

Fontana dell'Acqua Paola

Some of the best things in Rome are free, including the views from this monumental fountain high on the Janiculum hill. It’s one of T+L’s top underrated things to do in Rome . Fans of the Oscar-winning film “Rome, the Great Beauty” will recognize this majestic spot.

This classy bar offers great cocktails and light bites with a sublime view. “A table there in the stunning Piazza di Pietra,” says Bono, “with the incredible Roman columns all lit up is truly magical, and it feels like it's just there for you."

Hassler Hotel 7th Floor Terrace

The recipe for an unforgettable Roman evening: Start with panoramic city views from atop the Spanish Steps, stir in a specialty cocktail, garnish with some elevated aperitivo fare, and drink it all in at one of our favorite family-run hotels in Italy and one of the absolute best in Rome.

Da Enzo da 29

Despite its near-legendary status and the long lines for a table (Enzo doesn’t take reservations), Itzkowitz says a meal here is “worth the wait and lives up to the hype — every time.” She’s a fan of the handmade tonarelli cacio e pepe but says that the food here is consistently good across the menu.

Trattoria Da Cesare Al Pellegrino

This new-in-2023 sister property of a neighborhood favorite in residential Monteverde brings hearty, traditional Roman pasta and meat dishes to the centro storico. “Run, don't walk,” says Bono, “because this city location is super charming, and tourists haven't found it yet.”

Pro Loco Pinciano

Portuesi says you’ll feel like a local at this super-casual pizza and pasta joint just outside the city walls, where the emphasis is on ingredients and wines sourced from the surrounding region on Lazio. Charcuterie platters are delicious and abundant here.

L'Antica Pesa

Regularly named one of the best restaurants in Rome, this Trastevere culinary landmark is, per Portuesi, “a standard and consistent classic” and worth crossing the river for. Head here for a special dinner or when you’re ready to go big (before going home, maybe?) and order an appetizer, pasta (primo), meat, and dessert for the full Italian dining experience.

You’ve heard all the warnings about visiting in high summer, but if that’s the only time you have to visit, Itzkowitz says to do as the Romans do: rest in your cool hotel room in the afternoon and venture out again in the early evening. Bono agrees that summer can be...sticky but adds, “Those summer sunsets on a rooftop with an Aperol spritz certainly make for that 'Dolce Vita moment' we all crave.”

Portuesi recommends November, as it’s still relatively warm and the crowds have thinned out; January, when sale season starts; or April and October. “Tourists might still be there, but the colors of spring and autumn are amazing, and temperatures are on the warm side.” I love visiting in January or February when the crowds are much more manageable, and if you’re lucky, you can catch some lovely, crisp, sunny days.

Most visitors fly into Rome’s Leonardo da Vinci/Fiumicino Airport (FCO). From there, you can take a 30-minute non-stop train to Termini, the central station, and take a taxi, Metro, bus, or tram to your accommodation. A cab from FCO to anywhere inside the Aurelian Walls costs 50 euros. Ride-sharing services other than Uber Black are not available in Rome.

Rome’s historic center is primarily flat and highly walkable. Many visitors take the Metro to reach the Vatican Museums, then walk back into the city from there (or take a cab from St. Peter’s Square).

Buses and Metro, both run by ATAC , are also reliable ways to get around, though depending on the distance, walking may be faster. Note that taxis in Rome cannot be hailed on the street. Instead, they wait at taxi stands or ranks generally located near tourist areas.

I strongly recommend against renting a car in Rome, as traffic and parking are a mess and the centro is a maze of one-way streets, many of which are pedestrian-only. If you pick up a car in Rome for a more extended tour in Italy, make sure you have your route mapped out in advance — and nerves of steel.

In his first overseas trip since his February announcement that he was undergoing cancer treatments, King Charles III will travel to France to commemorate the 80th anniversary of D-Day, as will Prince William and Queen Camilla .

Charles has long been a fixture at the June 6 events in Normandy and the UK, which annually mark the coordinated air and sea landings that led to the liberation of France and the eventual end of World War II. It was unclear if he'd be participating in person this year, given his recent diagnosis and a subsequent pause in royal duties.

That pause ended last month , when King Charles and Queen Camilla visited the Macmillan Cancer Centre at University College Hospital to meet with patients and staff. On Friday, Buckingham Palace announced that his schedule would gear up in June, with a series of events to mark what remains the largest seaborne invasion in history.

The commemorations begin on June 5, when Charles, Camilla, and Prince William will attend a ceremony at Southsea Common in the English city of Portsmouth, one of the primary starting points for D-Day troops in 1944. According to the BBC , that event will include “light displays, readings and music.”

From there, Charles and Camilla will travel to France, where they will visit the British Normandy Memorial at Ver-sur-Mer on June 6, Sky News reports . Along with officials from the Ministry of Defence and Royal British Legion, 23 surviving D-Day veterans are expected to attend.

Meanwhile, William will travel to Juno Beach Centre in Courseulles-sur-Mer, for a commemoration of the Canadian troops' contribution to the effort. After that, he'll make the trip to Omaha Beach, Saint Laurent sur Mer to stand in for his father at the annual international commemorative ceremony, where he'll be joined by “25 heads of state and veterans from around the world.”

In years past, William has been joined by wife Kate Middleton , but she won't be in attendance this year, the AP reports . Similar to Charles, Middleton is recovering from treatments related to a cancer discovery announced in March .

Following that announcement, William also stopped back from public events, instead spending private time with his family. Earlier this month, it was reported that William is “digging deep” to support his father and wife during their respective illnesses, with a royal source saying that “William is prioritizing giving her all the time she needs to get better." He resumed his schedule of public engagements in late April , saying then that his wife and children are “all doing well, thank you.”

This Arizona city was named the top dog-friendly destination in the United States

jharkhand trip plan

With lots of pet-friendly trails and restaurants, hundreds of vet offices, and a community that embraces four-legged visitors, Flagstaff was named the ultimate travel destination for dog owners in the United States.

A recent ranking by USA TODAY and Blueprint analyzed how the most touristy cities across the U.S. accommodate pets based on several categories including the number of dog-friendly places to stay, dog-friendly restaurants, dog-friendly bars, vet offices, and dog-friendly trails and beaches. Most of the categories were analyzed in relation to the city's population density.

So, if your idea of a perfect vacation includes your canine friend, here's a roundup of the best dog-friendly vacation destinations in the U.S.

Why was Flagstaff named the most dog-friendly city in the US?

Flagstaff is known for its stunning alpine landscape, vibrant downtown shops, popular outdoor activities and artsy charm.

Flagstaff is a four-season climate town with more than 260 days of sunshine each year, according to USA TODAY. At approximately 7,000 feet of elevation, Flagstaff's weather contrasts with the Phoenix Valley's arid year-round climate.

Flagstaff has nearly 56 dog-friendly accommodation options per 100,000 residents on average, making it the city with the highest concentration of dog-friendly accommodations, according to analysts with USA TODAY and Blueprint.

Flagstaff also has about 132 dog-friendly trails and about 39 dog-friendly restaurants per 100,000 residents for you to choose from.

Top 10 dog-friendly vacation destinations

According to U.S. International Trade Administration data, USA TODAY and Blue Print analyzed the top 50 most visited cities by overseas tourists in 2022. Each metric was graded on a 100-point scale, with 100 representing the most favorable vacation destination for dogs.

Each city’s weighted average across all metrics was calculated to determine its overall score on a scale from one to 100.

Here are the best dog-friendly vacation destinations and their scaled score, according to USA TODAY and Blueprint:

  • Flagstaff: 100.00
  • San Luis Obispo, California: 98.67
  • Santa Barbara, California: 96.80
  • Austin, Texas: 94.13
  • Portland, Oregon: 85.33
  • San Diego: 84.13
  • Naples, Florida: 84.00
  • Nashville: 81.47
  • Denver: 81.07
  • Key West, Florida: 80.93

If you want to explore more places for you and your pup, the table below shows how many dog-friendly features the top 20 cities in the rating have, rounded to the nearest whole number.
