The Killers are an American post-punk alternative rock band formed in Las Vegas, US, in 2001 by members Brandon Flowers and Dave Keuning, who found each other through a newspaper ad.

Since day one The Killers have had a sound, which cannot be confined or compared to those around them. Their rock music is intense yet has a pop-inspired theatricality, which borrows as much from bands like Oasis and The Smiths as it does from artists such as David Bowie.

The band’s first shows in Las Vegas found a loyal audience, but stuck out like a sore thumb from the metal and rap acts flooding the local scene. Keeping to this mentality, The Killers found their initial successes not within their home country of the United States but within the United Kingdom, where the song “Mr. Brightside” premiered on Zane Lowe’s BBC Radio 1 show and consequently found the band a huge following.

Albums “Hot Fuss”, “Sam's Town”, “Day & Age” and “Battle Born” have all reached number one in the UK charts shortly after their release. In the United States, The Killers’ debut album “Hot Fuss” went triple platinum with the single “Mr. Brightside” hitting number 10 in the US charts.

The band’s musical talent has been recognized with seven Grammy Award nominations, as well as multiple Brit Awards and NME Awards for their various albums and singles such as “Human” and “When We Were Young”. Fans of the band include megastars such as Jay-Z, who described the band’s MO as taking “what's old and mak[ing] it sound new again."

As their popularity continues to grow, The Killers have extended their worldwide tours to include countries such as Russia and China along with spots all over Europe and North America. Along with an ever-growing list of countries to tour, the venues the band plays to are also expanding at an incredible rate. In recent years The Killers have found themselves playing to insane audiences at Madison Square Gardens, US; Wembley Stadium, UK; and The Royal Albert Hall, UK.

Live reviews

If you've never seen The Killers live, you should probably kick yourself. As a long-time fan, but someone who hadn't seen them in concert until their latest studio effort, I still find myself kicking myself for never having gone to see them.

The energy when they're on stage is infectious. They feed off each other and also the crowd, and the crowd feeds off of them - always seeming to leave both sides hungry for more. I guess that's what a great live band does.

For the show at Borgata's new Festival Park venue, the first surprise was the return of the K as part of the keyboard stand. This iconic throwback to the Day and Age era kinda had me hoping this wouldn't be more or less the same Battle Born tour set list that they've been doing for nearly three years. At 20 songs long, it was a full set, with a few surprises, but was largely unchanged from the last time I saw them. Of course, this is a band that has four albums under their belts, and because they don't want to disappoint more casual fans (as in non-Victims), they don't want to leave out any of their hits.

Opening with Mr. Brightside, lights still on, the smile on Brandon Flowers' face was apparent that he has missed his onstage brothers. The smile didn't fade as they drove on into Spaceman, and after introducing the band as well as Ted "Named after the great Ted Williams" Sablay and Jake "The Snake" Blanton, they carried on to The Way It Was. Smile Like You Mean It led into Bling, followed by Human. A return to their first album was introduced by a chills-inducing heavy bass opening as Somebody Told Me reminded everyone why they became as big as they are.

A cover of CCR's Bad Moon Rising led into a surprise of their 2012 album Battle Born as they played the life out of The Rising Tide - a nice surprise. After Shot at the Night, For Reasons Unknown, and From Here On Out, things slowed down for Dustland Fairytale and another surprise, Be Still. Read My Mind and Runaways led into a bittersweet All These Things I've Done. Why bittersweet? When All These Things comes on, fans know it's the last of their main set.

The last surprise of the night came with the first of their encores as they rolled into Uncle Jonny. We know that The Killers (almost) always include their very first album opener: Jenny Was a Friend of Mine - They don't come all the way from Las Vegas and not play Jenny. When You Were Young was the show's closer.

With the news report over, here's the editorial portion of the review.

This band never disappoints - even in the rare instance that they're off their game, they're still on their game. For the show in Atlantic City at Borgata Festival Park they were undoubtedly on their game. Seeing them on stage together, it was as though it was where they wanted to be. The show in AC, before a crowd of 4500, was a warmup for the 70,000 strong crowd at Firefly. Of the 4500 people leaving Festival Park, I don't think one of them was disappointed. I even caught one of the guys working security singing along to a few of their older hits.

While I would have loved to have seen some of the lesser-played songs instead of the set they played, it's only because I've seen them do these songs so often, and had never seen them perform prior to 2012 (huge mistake on my part). The Killers want people to leave their shows with a sense of satisfaction, so, playing their most popular songs is a given. Still, I would just love to hear Sam's Town at least one more time, and quite honestly, I wish they'd drop the cover song they do (for the last 6 shows I've seen, they have always done Bad Moon Rising). With an arsenal of 4 full albums, they certainly have enough original material to play a full set without tossing in a cover version. (At least it's not Shadowplay!)

Nothing would ever be able to stop me from making the effort to see this band perform. The 22 hour round-trip to the Jersey Shore was well worth it; they never disappoint. Ever. If I could, I'd be at a Killers show every night for the rest of my life.

Yes, a Killers show is one of my personal Sam's Towns - if you don't know what that means, do yourself a favor, and while waiting for their next tour, check out their live DVD - Live From the Royal Albert Hall. You'll see why Victims, myself included, will travel all kinds of distances to see these guys perform.

The Killers played the first night of Lollapalooza last year, and they made it a night I'll never forget. From the stage lighting to visual effects on the screens, The Killers put on a show that captivated the thousands of people that came out to watch them. The band erupted with "Mr. Brightside," which sent the audience into a state of excitement. Everyone started dancing/jumping/singing to the music. There was a lot of jostling around, and I kept getting pushed forward by people from behind trying to get closer to the stage. I remember while I was belting out the lyrics to "Human," someone grabbed my arm and started dancing with me. The audience was so friendly, and looking around, many people had huge smiles on their faces that shone against the colorful stage lights. The Killers have been around for quite some time, and anyone can see that they are clearly at ease playing in front of thousands of people. The lead singer, Brandon Flowers, sang even better live compared to the audio recordings. He didn't even take a water break or anything; he just kept going and going, and throughout the entire performance, his energy stayed sky high (his collared shirt was unbuttoned and drenched with sweat by the end if the night). He introduced the rest of the band and was very interactive with the crowd, reaching out to touch outstretched hands. The concert had a fun, friendly vibe to it, and I was surrounded by people who were all so happy to be there. That concert was the first time I experienced a night show outdoors, let alone in the heart of downtown Chicago. Looking up around me, the skyscrapers we're lit up and the stage lights bounced off of them. It was such a beautiful sight. Jamming out to awesome music under the city lights was the perfect way to end my first night at Lolla.

This was, so far, the best concert for The Killers that I've ever seen (& I've seen them 3 times already). The acoustics for the Staples Center wasn't the absolute best, but it didn't matter when the whole stadium was singing at the top of their lungs along with the band. First of all, since this was the Wonderful Wonderful Tour, I thought the band would play mostly songs from the new album, but to my surprise, they performed a great mix of songs from their entire discography. What surprised me the most was that The Killers played a ton more songs from their Hot Fuss album than they ever had before. They even dug deep to perform such notable songs like "Andy, You're A Star" & "Smile Like You Mean It". A beautifully sweet touch was when the band performed a new, sort of spur-of-the-moment, song about Los Angeles...a song they had written on the road just before their L.A. leg of the tour. One of the major highlights of the entire concert was when the band had invited a young teenage fan up onto the stage to play the drums on the song "For Reasons Unknown". Apparently this has become an ongoing tradition of the band, to invite fans up on the stage to perform with them. This was such a touching, yet totally bad-ass moment, & I hope The Killers keep on doing this at every concert tour from now on. By the end of the concert, my friends & I had lost our voices from singing & screaming so loudly, but it was one thousand percent worth it. The Killers proved with their electrifying & humorous stage presence, along with their amazing voices & talent, that they will forever hold the spot of being my all-time favorite band.

The killers in vancouver, how can i even but this into words that people will comprehend? For me, the killers are my favorite band and Brandon Flowers is a HUGE inspiration in my life. His style of writing impacts me in a huge way. Also, for me, the killers music helped me a lot with personal problems that had hit me pretty hard in my life. I listen to their music when i'm happy, sad, healthy or sick, and for me, seeing this concert was in a way, life saving. And being such a huge fan, i had high hopes for this show and they did not at all disapoint. I went to this show with one of my closest friends, who is also a huge killers fan. The show began with 'Wonderful Wonderful' (as you may have assumed) and soon after they jumped right into 'The Man'. The setlist was incredible. I honestly couldn't say that i was disappointed with any of the songs they chose to play. I wish they would have done 'Bones' or 'Under the Gun' but i had low hopes when it came to those two. The stage presents was incredible. I couldn't take my eyes off of Brandon. He is just one of those people who can really own a stage and engage a crowd. And coming from an aspiring guitarist, i would normally be watching the guitarist almost out of habit; but with the exception of guitar solos, I was watching Brandon. This is a show I would heavily recommend going to. For me, it was the greatest experience of my life. The only negative of the show is figuring out how you're going to top it.

I hadn't listened to the Killers in several years and was invited by a friend to go see them in concert. I'd forgotten how good they were! Their show was full of energy and the evening was nothing short of spectacular. It seemed like every inch of the stage was covered with lights, and the show was filled with special effects some including fireworks. A Killers concert is like a massive stadium type of show, full of power and special effects.

The band played all their hit songs and even included some cover songs that really were done well. One of the really good covers they played was the Smiths “There is a Light that Never goes out”. The crowd was very energized and the show started out at full force when they opened with one of their better know songs “When You were Young”. The band finished with several encores including some of their first hits, I guess the show ended up lasting about 90-95 minutes.

The venue was large but it was pretty full. The crowd did get a little out of control at some points during the show, but the stadium was large enough that they had good security and you could just move away from people who were getting carried away. The band is getting older but they sounded great. It is good to see them back in rock and roll form.

The Killers delivered a high energy polished show. Brandon was in great voice, drummer was fantastic. A great rock show for sure.

The venue, however... just atrocious. Place Bell in Laval is a new arena for 10K attendance, but it has massive logistical & design failures. 1) crowds waited 25-60 minutes to enter the building ... outside in -35C! ... due to an inadequate entry plan. Thousands of concertgoers were invited to show up between 7-8 pm, to be greeted by 4 open doors and 6 security stations. 2) parking congestion nightmares & traffic woes before and after the show 3) electricity on stage went out 3 times during the show 4) other concert-goers reported no drinking fountains, toilet paper, limited mobility access...

SUMMARY: Go See the Killers, not at Place Bell in Laval.

The Killers, as always, were amazing beyond mere words. I've seen them in concert before, but somehow this particular concert at Outside Lands 2014 was especially memorable. From singing Credence Clearwater Revival & Otis Redding covers, to performing all their greatest hits (and then some). I was completely pumped up from beginning to end. As per their usual Las Vegas-ian flare, the light show almost stole the spotlight from Brandon Flowers & his famous lightning bolt keyboard, but no one can captivate & amp up an audience like Mr B Flowers. I think I might have been one of the loudest singers in my section of the crowd. Singing along to all the "Direct Hits" is always the best part of the concert!

It was my first time seeing The Killers after a number of years waiting to see them play live. I have never had an experience quite like this one. They are a truly special band to see play live, the energy of the crowd is infectious, and you are left wanting more. Brandon Flowers, man, I don't know how he does it. Plays show after show after show and still sounds incredible. The additions to the band were awesome and Ronnie is a beast (in the best way.) My favorite thing about their show was actually the stage design. It was so beautiful and colorful and set the tone perfectly for each song. You will have a BLAST at their show, whether you're a hardcore fan or not. Can't wait to see them again! :-)

I actually saw the show at Barclays on Tuesday the 8th. Let me start by saying I see a lot of concerts every year and was only familiar with the better known of The Killers songs. Having said that - they were EXCELLENT! Flowers is a magnificent front man with a set of pipes to carry stadiums. The band is flawless and so rock and roll. I will judge a band by how much they can hook me with a song I’ve never heard before . From the opening with Wonderful Wonderful and The Man thru The Calling start to the encore I was dazzled. I downloaded everything and I’m now a confirmed fan. I will see them again ASAP. One of the best live I have seen -ever. And I’m no spring chicken.

It was amazing!!! From the moment they went on stage to the very last second it was just so much positive energy coming from the band. The crowd was bad, but that isn’t The Killers’ fault! They did the absolute most and it paid off. Brandon hit those high notes despite his flu, Ronnie was legendary on the drums, Ted was amazing, the choir was amazing, et cetera et cetera. It’s a shame (especially for the people that DID know all their songs) that the crowd bothered them so much that they didn’t play Mr. Brightside, but again, the band isn’t to blame.

These Las Vegas legends know how to give a great performance!

Very few modern bands have a “Mr. Brightside.” Even fewer are able to whip it out in the first five minutes of a show and continue to entertain an arena for another 90 minutes. And even fewer are those who can hold their own in a three-song duet with Bruce Springsteen as he beams with excitement announcing their name to the crowd: “ THE KILLERS !”

“Everybody knows God made Saturday nights for rock ‘n’ roll,” frontman Brandon Flowers declared toward the beginning of the band’s set, the second of two consecutive nights at Madison Square Garden. And the Killers delivered on that, taking New York City on a tour of its greatest songs from “Hot Fuss” to “Pressure Machine.”

Popular on Variety

While it was clear large swaths of the audience were not familiar with the Las Vegas band’s vastly underrated 2020 outing “Imploding the Mirage,” the Killers made a case for why they should be, opening the show with the explosive “My Own Soul’s Warning” and devoting much-deserved space to “Fire in Bone,” “Dying Breed” and “Caution.”

Midway through the set, the band went acoustic for “Runaway Horses,” with Flowers declaring that over the pandemic, the Killers had become a country band. Before playing the “Pressure Machine” tune, Flowers earnestly told the 20,000 city folk in the audience to “go get a beer if you don’t want to hear it.”

It’s hard not to be charmed by Flowers’ unfettered optimism and enthusiasm. He sings every song with a smile, stretching out the final singalong chorus of “Runaways” and then cheekily tucking Bill Withers’ “Lean on Me” into “Read My Mind.” At one point in the show, he quoted the “indestructible” Hellen Keller.

On some level, you have to buy into the Killers because, nowadays at least, it’s hard to find music as unapologetically anthemic without even the slightest hint of irony. Even the band’s corniest, most nonsensical lyrics (“We’re burning down the highway skyline / On the back of a hurricane that started turning when you were young”; “If you could see through the banner of the sun / Into eternity’s eyes like a vision reaching down to you”), paired with desert-rippling guitar riffs, roll off Flowers’ tongue like rock ‘n’ roll manifestos.

“Me and my friends have all been sweating bullets up here all night, because the Boss is here,” Flowers announced as he walked back onstage, barely able to contain his own excitement.

Before easing into their Springsteen collaboration “Dustland,” a reinvention of the band’s 2008 track “A Dustland Fairytale,” Flowers said, “This part of the night is usually reserved for me to have people put their phones up. And I tell us to think about where your light comes from.”

Then, turning to Springsteen, Flowers gushed, “It is a very unusual circumstance for me tonight because I get a lot of my light from you.”

The Killers and The Boss closed out the show on a bright note with “Born to Run,” with Flowers insisting Springsteen deliver the euphoric final verse: “The highway’s jammed with broken heroes on a last-chance power drive!” Then, sharing the microphone, the two of them — plus the entirety of Madison Square Garden — belted out the final chorus.

How to top that? Wisely, they didn’t try.

The Killers Couldn’t Tour Last Year. So They Wrote an Ambitious New Concept Album

By Andy Greene

Andy Greene

In the early days of the pandemic, just as it was becoming clear that the Killers ‘ 2020 tour wasn’t going to happen, Brandon Flowers found that his mind kept drifting back his formative years in the tiny, remote Utah town of Nephi. “There was a nostalgic longing in the air and a little bit of sadness,” the singer says. “I started thinking about where I was in the Nineties, and these stories just sort of blossomed out.”

Those stories form the basis of the upcoming Killers record Pressure Machine , due out August 13th. It’s a concept record about life in Nephi told from the perspective of various townspeople that touches on everything from prescription drug abuse and poverty to crime, homophobia, and depression. Despite the bleak tone of the record, there are touches of hope and joy sprinkled throughout it.

“When I was writing these songs, I was thinking of things like Sherwood Anderson’s book Winesburg, Ohio or that book Pastures of Heaven [by John Steinbeck],” Flowers says, “where’s it’s all these short stories that take place in this one setting. For some reason, I had the audacity to try it myself. Once I realized they were going to take place here and they were going to be true stories, everything just really fell in our laps.”

He wrote the lyrics before any of the music was created, scattering photos of Nephi around his keyboard for inspiration. Once he was ready, the band gathered at a studio in Cotati, California, with producers Jonathan Rado and Shawn Everett, the same team that worked on last year’s Imploding the Mirage . This was early 2020 and the pandemic was just beginning to rage. “It was tough,” says Flowers. “Shawn leans towards hypochondria. He was wearing glasses, goggles, and three masks in the studio. It was crazy. [Bassist] Mark [Stoermer] also struggled, and he didn’t make it into the studio. But we also wore masks and we got tested regularly. We were pretty diligent.”

The album begins with “West Hills,” which is about a desperate Nephi townie who gets busted with hillbilly heroin. “They got me for possession of enough to kill,” Flowers sings, “the horses that run free in the west hills.”

The record somehow turn even darker on “Terrible Thing,” which centers on a gay teenager who’s contemplating suicide. “There were kids I grew up with who I didn’t know until years later that they were gay,” says Flowers. “It must have just been so hard. I think the world is moving in a more positive direction and a more inclusive direction, but this was still in the Nineties and people kept this stuff close.”

Editor’s picks

Every awful thing trump has promised to do in a second term, the 250 greatest guitarists of all time, the 500 greatest albums of all time, the 50 worst decisions in movie history.

Most of the songs are drawn from Flowers’ own Nephi memories or things he’s read about in recent years, but on “Desperate Things” he veers off into a fictionalized tale of a cop who falls in love with a domestic-abuse victim, and winds up murdering her husband. It’s a tale that could have easily fit on Bruce Springsteen’s Nebraska , and it’s unlike anything in the Killers catalog.

“I basically took a story that was a scandal in town when I had lived there, and I took some liberties in the third verse and turned it into a murder ballad,” says Flowers. “In a typical pop or rock song, there’s just two verses. It’s not until you start getting into Springsteen and [John] Prine and stuff that you get to a third or fourth verse. But it helps you flesh out a story.”

“In Another Life” and “In the Car Outside” dwell on the dashed dreams and bitter regret of middle age, but the album ends with genuine hope on “The Getting By.” “Maybe it’s the stuff it takes to get up in the morning,” Flowers sings, “and put another day in sun that holds you till the getting’s good … This whole town is tied to the torso of God’s mysterious ways.”

The album features guest appearance by Joe Pug, Sara Watkins, and Phoebe Bridgers, and it also marks the return of Killers guitarist Dave Keuning. He sat out Imploding the Mirage and the last few tours to deal with personal matters and burnout stemming from years on the road. He wasn’t involved in the entire creative process, but “In the Car Outside” and “A Pressure Machine” both began with his guitar lines, and he plays on other songs on the album.

“It was cool having him back,” says drummer Ronnie Vannucci Jr. “You always realize when somebody re-enters the room, or leaves the room, what they bring. It was nice to have his element back in there. We’ve been playing together for about 20 years. It felt good.”

They were nearly done with the record when they decided to send an NPR employee to Nephi to record conversations with actual townspeople. He came back with incredibly personal stories so vivid that the band decided to begin each song on the album with snippets of them.

“We were in mastering mode, but it was the last ingredient needed to complete this project for us,” says Vannucci. “It gave us more of a real-life accounting, more so than our interpretations through songs and music. … It was people with their accents and their stories. It stitched it all together for us.”

The band played a virtual gig in late June for Australia’s Splendour in the Grass festival, with Keuning and Stoermer back onstage with the group for the first time in years, but they don’t plan on launching a formal tour until March when they head down to New Zealand. They hit North America in August 2022, and you can preorder tickets here .

But first up is an August 21st appearance at Central Park’s We Love NYC concert alongside Bruce Springsteen, Paul Simon, LL Cool J, Elvis Costello, and many others, with tickets available online now . They’re also playing Delaware’s Firefly Festival on September 24th, and Florida’s Sandjam Music Festival in early October. As of now, according to the band, Keuning plans on joining them on the road, but Stoermer will stay at home. Touring bassist Jake Blanton will once again take his spot.

“We’re going to do a warmup gig at Terminal 5 [in New York City] before the Central Park show,” says Flowers. “We’ve done some incredible gigs at Terminal 5. I keep thinking of what song we’re going to open with. I hope I can keep my composure. Playing live is a part of our identity and something we’ve missed out on, that connection with people and that community.”

A lot of bands are on the road right now, including Dave Matthews Band, Phish, and Green Day, but the Killers are being super cautious by not booking any major headlining gigs until 2022. “We don’t want to be the band that brings back Covid, the K variant,” says Vannucci. “There’s a lot of conjecture involved in touring and liability. And just out of general respect for people out there and keeping everyone healthy, we just wanted to be careful about that and not jump the gun.”

And even though they’ll have two full albums packed with songs that they’ve never played live by the time they next hit the road, they’re already thinking about yet another record. It’s still in the very early stages. “We got together for a week in San Diego a little while ago at Dave’s house,” says Flowers. “It was the four of us together, the first time we’d done that in years. But we need to rehearse in January for the tour. I don’t know if we can find time [to finish another album], though we’ll definitely get together again before Christmas.”

In the meantime, Flowers is anxious to share Pressure Machine with the world. And working on the album finally gave him a chance to view Nephi in a very different light. “As a teenager, I wanted out,” he says. “It wasn’t until much later that I developed more of an understanding of the beauty of the place. I was so free. People didn’t even have to lock their doors. I had a different sort of upbringing there. I can appreciate that now.”

'Taylor Swift baby' goes viral at concert. Are kids allowed – and should you bring them?

killers music tour

When is bringing a baby to a concert not OK? Apparently, when that baby is lying on the floor.

At least that's the consensus of social media after a photo went viral this weekend showing an infant flat on its back on the floor of Taylor Swift's Eras Tour concert Friday night at La Défense Arena in Paris.

The controversial picture − allegedly snapped at the show by another attendee, @jacnights13 , and then shared by a range of Swiftie fan accounts − depicts a baby wearing a light-up wristband in the pit area (no seats) with a person, presumably one of the parents, hovering over the child. The account has since been made private.

Related shots have surfaced online , including one posted on X by @irondaya, which showed the baby on the floor seemingly snoozing away while fans milled around. "The lack of common sense is astonishing to me," the post read in part.

While the baby did appear to have noise-reducing headphones on, the image of an infant lying on the ground − while adult feet stomp around dangerously close around it − generated largely alarmed reactions, says fanfluencer Olivia Levin, who shared the image on her popular Instagram account, Swifties for Eternity .

Need a break? Play the USA TODAY Daily Crossword Puzzle.

"From what I’ve seen, mostly people were appalled by it," says Levin, 24, of Nashville, Tennessee, who says she decided to take her post down because the baby's face wasn't blurred out.

"Sure, a few people in my comments and DMs said to me, 'You’re not a mother or parent and can’t understand what we do for our kids, it's my only opportunity to see a Taylor Swift concert.' Others said that they parent different in Europe, which was interesting," she says. "But most completely disagreed. It brings up an important conversation about how young is too young to be at a show."

At the innumerable Taylor Swift concerts she has attended , Levin says she has seen young girls and even toddlers, but "never a baby."

Typical of the horrified reaction was a comment on X by @whatamind13 next to a photo of a thoroughly packed stadium: "just to paint the full picture this is general admission at the Paris show tonight… and that baby is somewhere in the floor AT THIS SHOW ! ... terrible parenting."

The rules around kids at shows can vary from promoter to promoter, venue to venue and country to country. Generally speaking, the rules are actually guidelines. The only restrictions might revolve around the age at which a child must show up with a ticket as opposed to going in free.

The La Défense Arena website notes that the venue “ doesn’t recommend bringing children under the age of 4 , even if accompanied, particularly due to the high volume.” It also notes that strollers are prohibited, which would explain why this Swiftie could only rest their baby on the floor.

A venue spokesperson told the New York Post's Page Six that the fan in question would have been offered a place to sit: "For spectators with a young child in the floor, an alternative seating arrangement has been proposed but refused by ticket holders .”

A quick Google search reveals that plenty of parents are seeking guidance on the best way to bring a baby to a concert. Others ask whether the practice is wise.

A blog post on the e-commerce site Tushbaby asks "Can you take babies to concerts?" and advises that infants wear earplugs and, when possible, be taken to concerts that are "appropriate for their age and temperament." Beyond providing food and drinks, parents should be prepared to leave if the experience proves overwhelming for their baby, the post says.

The website Scary Mommy, which connects mothers on a range of parenting topics, featured a post a few years ago from a San Antonio woman whose sitter canceled at the last minute. That led Katarina Garcia and her partner to decide to buy some headphones at take their 5-month-old son to an all-day outdoor rock concert.

The Eras Tour in Paris: Taylor Swift sings 'The Alchemy' as Travis Kelce attends

Among the positives of her experience: Babies are often free at shows, music "is great for a child's development," and your "baby will be more adaptable."

"Taking an infant to a loud concert may seem anxiety-inducing, but it can also be a lot of fun and a great way to make memories," Garcia wrote. "I’m grateful I did it, because who knows if my son will ever get to experience Fleetwood Mac as an adult."

The American Academy of Audiology warns that children risk hearing loss if they are exposed to prolonged loud noises, with concerts ranking just below gunshots and jackhammers as hearing killers. Exposure beyond 30 minutes at a time is not recommended, according to their guidelines .

But what about just buying a pair of noise canceling headphones, is that enough to bring baby to the show? Not so fast, says Linda Dahl, an ear, nose and throat specialist with Northwell Lenox Hill Hospital in New York City.

"Those earmuffs can reduce noise by maybe 30 decibels, but concerts can be more than 100 decibels,” she says. “I’m not a fan” of earmuffs as a solution.

Dahl notes that babies have particularly sensitive and not-yet fully developed ears, and many of them often hear loud noises in an amplified way compared to adults. What’s more, any tests on babies to determine if there are hearing issues are inconclusive for the simple reason that babies cannot tell you if they are hearing something or not, she says.

If babies do have to be exposed to loud noises, beyond using ear muffs make keep the exposure to 20 minutes on and 20 minutes off, she says.

Getting a Taylor Swift fan to leave the show every 20 minutes is likely a tall order, doting parent or not.

Says Dahl, “At that, you might just think, 'Do I or my baby have to go to the concert?' ”

To Be Trump’s Running Mate, Defend Him, but Don’t Steal the Show

Donald Trump’s search is still in its early stages, but he is said to be leaning toward more experienced options who can help the ticket without seizing his precious spotlight.

  • Share full article

Gov. Doug Burgum of North Dakota, center, and Vivek Ramaswamy, right, attending Donald Trump’s trial in Manhattan. They are standing amid a group of people, with Mr. Trump blurred in the foreground.

By Michael C. Bender and Jesse McKinley

The cavalry of Republican vice-presidential contenders and other party officials inside the courthouse for Donald J. Trump’s criminal trial was so large one day this week that the group initially had trouble arranging themselves in the two rows set aside for guests of the defense team.

Wedged into their seats, they were immediately confronted with testimony accusing their party’s leader — who was trying to inoculate his 2016 presidential campaign from political damage — of writing checks for bogus legal expenses to hide hush-money payments to a porn star.

None of the conservatives in the courtroom flinched or raised an eyebrow, including Gov. Doug Burgum of North Dakota and Representative Byron Donalds of Florida, both of whom are said to be under consideration for Mr. Trump’s running mate.

Instead, their stoic, protective presence underscored the biggest political quandary facing ambitious Republicans who want Mr. Trump to pick them for vice president: how to fiercely defend him without stealing any of his precious spotlight.

The prize for puzzling out the best approach could be a spot near the top of every ballot in the country this fall.

“He always wants killers out there fighting for him,” said Barry Bennett, a Republican strategist who advised Mr. Trump’s first presidential campaign. “But he also needs someone with experience and skills who can help shape his message, massage it and make it stronger.”

In other words, Mr. Trump could be looking for a straight man.

In 2016, he selected Gov. Mike Pence of Indiana for a similar role. Mr. Pence’s presence on the ticket helped reassure skeptical evangelical voters and establishment Republicans in Congress. He then dutifully served Mr. Trump before refusing to help overturn the 2020 election, a moral stand that ruptured their relationship.

This year, Mr. Trump’s V.P. search remains in its early stages. His team is still considering, for example, how much weight to give a contender’s ability to raise money versus his or her political upside. But there is a growing consensus around the former president that he is leaning toward more experienced options who can campaign for the ticket without appearing to promote themselves.

For instance, he has shown an uptick in interest in relatively conventional Republicans like Mr. Burgum, Senator Marco Rubio of Florida and Senator Tim Scott of South Carolina.

Mr. Trump has also privately praised Representative Elise Stefanik of New York and Senator J.D. Vance of Ohio, who is close with Mr. Trump’s son, Donald Trump Jr., and is viewed as a top running-mate contender. Mr. Vance attended the trial on Monday and spent much of the day denouncing the prosecution’s top witness, making the kind of broadsides that the judge in the case has barred Mr. Trump from hurling.

“Recognizing that sometimes it’s a little bit lonely to sit up there yourself, I offered to come in and maybe just be a friendly face in the courtroom,” Mr. Vance said later on Fox News.

Mr. Trump’s team has also recently pushed potential running mates to sit for interviews with news outlets beyond conservative networks, like Fox News and Newsmax, to test their performance under tougher questioning as well as their appeal to more mainstream audiences.

This article is based on interviews with more than half a dozen Republican operatives who are familiar with Mr. Trump’s deliberations, all of whom insisted on anonymity to discuss the private conversations.

Mr. Trump has long resented aides and associates who leverage his branding for their gain. But now, in his third presidential campaign, he also has a diminished appetite for anyone who might add to the already substantial list of legal and political problems competing for his attention.

That means that some of the more publicity-driven Republicans who enjoy celebrity status within Mr. Trump’s conservative movement appear to be falling off his radar as potential running mates.

In recent weeks, his informal conversations about potential vice-presidential picks have rarely mentioned contenders like Kari Lake, who is running for Senate in Arizona; Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene of Georgia; or Vivek Ramaswamy, the entrepreneur who ran for president this year.

To illustrate this moment for Mr. Trump, consider the two Dakota state capitols.

The roughly 170 miles between Bismarck, N.D., and Pierre S.D., represent a relatively short distance for anyone traversing the Great Plains, but the Republican leaders of each state are worlds apart when it comes to the former president’s deliberations.

In South Dakota, Gov. Kristi Noem has effectively fallen out of contention after her book tour spiraled out of control over a series of bizarre passages, most startlingly one that detailed how she shot dead her 14-month-old farm dog, Cricket , in a gravel pit.

Several Trump advisers had considered her a long-shot candidate well before she spent much of recent weeks defending her decision to personally put down her wirehaired pointer. Even Mr. Trump had spoken privately to some associates about his reluctance to field any questions about the South Dakota governor and her judgment if she were on his ticket.

Privately, Mr. Trump has expressed astonishment about Ms. Noem’s book, telling advisers he would rather not worry about fellow Republicans killing their dogs. Other times, he has made unprompted jokes, warning friends, “Don’t kill your dog, whatever you do.”

Publicly, Mr. Trump has not wanted to rule anyone out of contention. He is intrigued by redemption stories and often revels in requests for forgiveness from former opponents and critics.

But in the past week, Mr. Trump all but ruled out the possibility of selecting former Gov. Nikki Haley of South Carolina, who was his last remaining rival in the presidential primary race this year. And during a radio interview on Tuesday, he acknowledged that Ms. Noem’s chances had diminished.

“She got hit hard,” Mr. Trump said, adding that “the dog story, you know, people hear that and people from different parts of the country probably feel a little bit differently — but that’s a tough story.”

Up in North Dakota, the political stock of Mr. Burgum appears to be on the rise.

The governor’s public profile has differed considerably from Ms. Noem’s. A day after she cut short her book tour, Mr. Burgum spoke uninterrupted for 30 minutes about residual funds and potential corn and bean yields as he unveiled his state budget proposal to a handful of people in a dreary conference room. A livestream of the event topped out at 132 viewers.

During his presidential primary bid against Mr. Trump last year, Mr. Burgum was mostly overlooked by voters and the news media alike. But he has become close to the former president in recent months.

Mr. Trump, who has a history of surrounding himself with wealthy former businessmen, is said to be intrigued by Mr. Burgum, who sold his software company to Microsoft for $1 billion more than two decades ago.

Mr. Trump has also told advisers that Mr. Burgum has the “central casting” look of a vice president, and has praised the governor’s knowledge of energy issues. Mr. Burgum has recently become a frequent defender of Mr. Trump’s on cable news, attended a fund-raiser at Mar-a-Lago last week and spoke before the former president at a campaign rally last Saturday in New Jersey.

After attending Mr. Trump’s trial on Tuesday, Mr. Burgum pointed to the presumptive Republican nominee’s lead over President Biden in recent polls as proof that the criminal proceedings in New York held little sway for voters.

“The conclusion you can draw from that,” Mr. Burgum said of the polls, “is the American people have already acquitted Donald Trump.”

Mr. Trump’s options for vice president extend well beyond the two Dakota governors, but his choice can be viewed roughly as one between the two corners of the party each represents.

“He needs someone who, first and foremost, does no harm,” said Ken Blackwell, a former Ohio secretary of state who was an adviser to Mr. Trump’s White House transition team after the 2016 election. “But he also needs someone who can help put together a team to hit the ground running and advance his agenda in Washington.”

Senator Rick Scott of Florida, a Republican who is up for re-election this year and has been floated as an outside vice-presidential possibility, set off the trend of high-profile conservative cameos in the Manhattan courthouse with a visit last week.

Mr. Scott said he had traveled to New York at the urging of Susie Wiles, one of the top advisers on the Trump campaign, who oversaw Mr. Scott’s successful races for governor in 2010 and 2014.

“When people are being persecuted, that is when they need you to show up,” Mr. Scott said in an interview.

Mr. Scott said he had not spoken with Mr. Trump about potential running mates, but he predicted that the former president would add someone who can “help execute his vision to fix the country.”

Asked about Republicans who are trying to win points with Mr. Trump by defending him in public, Mr. Scott pointed to what conservatives see as fatal flaws in the criminal case: “What everyone ought to be doing is talking about the facts.”

Our Coverage of the 2024 Election

Presidential Race

President Biden has spent much of his time over the past week talking to Black voters, many of whom are now threatening to withhold their support. Read takeaways from recent events .

Biden and Donald Trump have agreed to two debates  on June 27 on CNN and Sept. 10 on ABC News, raising the likelihood of the earliest general-election debate  in modern history. Here’s how each of them might try to win the debates .

Trump’s search for a running mate is still in its early stages, but he is said to be leaning toward more experienced options  who can help the ticket without seizing his precious spotlight.

As Trump’s criminal trial winds down, a center-left group is trying to goad him into testifying through an ad . Trump instead is visiting Minnesota, where his campaign says it can broaden the electoral battlefield with a play for the state  that always disappoints Republicans.

A Remarkable Pivot:  Larry Hogan, the former two-term Republican governor of Maryland who won his party’s nomination for the state’s open Senate seat, said that he supports legislation to codify abortion rights  in federal law.

Gavin Newsom Accuses Trump:  The California governor, speaking at the Vatican, used sharp language to describe the former president’s  appeal to fossil fuel executives for campaign donations, calling it “open corruption.”

How Rich Candidates Burned Cash:  It is a time-honored tradition in U.S. politics: wealthy people burning through their fortunes  to ultimately lose an election.

Montana’s Senate Race:  Republicans are trying to paint Senator Jon Tester as a Washington sellout, while their own candidate, Tim Sheehy, faces scrutiny over his credibility and how he sustained a gunshot wound. It all comes down to the question of trust.
