‘Tis the Season For Giving!

Donate to the zootampa giving tree.

Trustees of the Lowry Park Zoological Society, Directors of the Lowry Park Zoo Endowment Foundation, and the Employees and Volunteers of ZooTampa understand and appreciate the vital role of philanthropy to accomplish our work. That’s why we subscribe to the Donor Bill of Rights developed by the American Association of Fund Raising Counsel, Association for Healthcare Philanthropy, Council for Advancement and Support of Education, National Society of Fund Raising Executives:

“Philanthropy is based on voluntary action for the common good. It is a tradition of giving and sharing that is primary to the quality of life. To assure that philanthropy merits the respect and trust of the general public, and that donors and prospective donors can have full confidence in the not-for-profit organizations and causes that they are asked to support, we declare that all donors have these rights:

  • To be informed of the organization’s mission, of the way the organization intends to use donated resources, and of its capacity to use donations effectively for their intended purposes.
  • To be informed of the identity of those serving on the organization’s governing board, and to expect the board to exercise prudent judgment in its stewardship responsibilities.
  • To have access to the organization’s most recent financial statements.
  • To be assured their gifts will be used for the purposes for which they were given.
  • To receive appropriate acknowledgment and recognition.
  • To be assured that information about their donation is handled with respect and with confidentiality to the extent provided by law.
  • To expect that all relationships with individuals representing organizations of interest to the donor will be professional in nature.
  • To be informed whether those seeking donations are volunteers, employees of the organization or hired solicitors.
  • To have the opportunity for their names to be deleted from mailing lists that an organization may intend to share.
  • To feel free to ask questions when making a donation and to receive prompt, truthful and forthright answers.”

ZooTampa at Lowry Park is committed to protecting your privacy. We value the trust of our donors, volunteers, employees, and other supporters and recognize that maintaining this trust requires us to ensure the confidentiality of personal information that you share with us.

As a non-profit organization, ZooTampa relies on your support, depends on the support of generous contributors, and achieves ambitious fundraising objectives by communicating with and understanding donors.

Elephant Wild Encounters return!

Profile photo of Msholo

A new home for elephants

The new elephant environment more than triples the size of the elephants’ former habitat and is a dynamic living space featuring elements specifically designed for elephant well-being and enrichment..

African elephants Kelly and Tara moved to their new environment in June 2019. Zoo Atlanta welcomed Msholo, an adult male African elephant from the San Diego Zoo Safari Park, in July 2019.

More Features of the Elephants’ new Habitat

Elements include Abana Pond , the largest of the complex’s three water features, a pond with 360-degree access and a gentle slope for ease of use by multiple elephants. Other elements include Chishimba Falls and Kalambo Falls, waterfalls named for falls in Africa, and a feeder enrichment activity wall .

The state-of-the-art indoor Zambezi Elephant Center also features elements incorporated with elephant well-being in mind, including sand under their feet. The guest experience at the Zambezi Elephant Center offers visitors an opportunity to get a behind-the-scenes look at the elephants’ care.

A new habitat for giraffes

A mixed-species habitat, adjacent to the elephant environment, will be shared by giraffes , zebras and ostriches . This new, flatter habitat provides the giraffe herd with more usable space than ever before and gives guests an opportunity to explore pathways at ground level, looking up to appreciate the true height of Earth’s tallest living mammals.

New habitats for zebra, ostriches, warthogs and meerkats

The elephant and giraffe/zebra/ostrich/bontebok habitats are bordered by new habitats for meerkats and warthogs . Explore new environments for two of the species that make this ecosystem one of the planet’s best-known wild landscapes.

Meet Mumbles and Kiazi!

Mumbles and Kiaza the southern white rhinos can be seen in the redesigned rhino complex at the African Savanna. Male Mumbles arrived at Zoo Atlanta in 2020 and was joined by female Kiazi in 2022. The rhinos were recommended to pair by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums’ (AZA) White Rhino Species Survival Plan® (SSP).

Meet Casper!

The newest member of the African Savanna, Casper the bontebok arrived in 2022. Look for him in the mixed-species habitat with the giraffes, zebra, and ostriches.

More Ways to Explore

Be the animal, be the care specialist and be the conservationist.

All-new interactives allow you to explore these themes with up-close and hands-on opportunities. OKC Zoo's Expedition Africa habitat now open: See Pachyderm building updates, zoo babies

zoo african safari actu

For months, visitors to the Oklahoma City Zoo have been met with construction fences blocking off a large portion of the zoo.

Now, all 12 acres of the zoo's largest habitat expansion are open to the public.

Some animals are still adjusting to their new habitat, while others are waiting to be brought to the zoo.

Here's what to know about Expedition Africa.

OKC Zoo's newest habitat Expedition Africa

Finished just in time for spring break, Expedition Africa is home to more than 60 species and is the zoo's largest habitat expansion since it opened in 1902.

Located in the heart of the zoo, Expedition Africa features a large giraffe yard that the tall mammals will share with two species of antelope and ostrich. Giraffe feeding will be available soon using the new eye-level platform next to the giraffe barn, which is also open to the public. Thanks to the new giraffe barn, guests can now view and feed the giraffes year-round.

In the next yard over, zebras will share space with wildebeests, imitating the relationship the two species share in the wild. Zebras and wildebeests can be found traveling together and sharing the same grazing ground.

Next to the giraffes is the zoo's historic Pachyderm building , the inside of which was renovated to turn the former hippopotamus and elephant home into housing for reptiles and small rodents. The former elephant habitat is now a private event space.

The building was recently added to the National Register of Historic Places and its mid-century modern architecture was preserved, while the inside was modernized with air-conditioning and no longer has an animal smell.

The habitat expansion cost $35 million, and the official ribbon cutting will take place March 26.

All the new animals you can see at OKC Zoo Expedition Africa

Along with some old favorites, Expedition Africa features several new animals.

  • Wildebeest are first-timers at the OKC Zoo and can be found behind the giraffe barn. They soon will be joined by a new zebra herd.
  • Lemurs , both ring-tailed and red-ruffed, are making their OKC Zoo debut and can be seen from the entrance to the zoo.
  • A series of tunnels and burrows behind glass features naked mole rats inside the historic Pachyderm building.
  • You can find the black-and-white honey badgers just east of the Pachyderm building.
  • The energetic dwarf mongoose , found inside the Pachyderm building, are also new to the OKC Zoo.

What else is new at the OKC Zoo?

If you're looking for a way to avoid so much walking, check out the zoo's brand-new ScooterPals. These new electric rides feature five different animal options and can be rented at the zoo's entrance.

For spring break, the zoo's hours will extend to close at 6 p.m. instead of 5 p.m.

There are also several baby animals to see, including the baby endangered Francois langur Fera, born in January.

A litter of six African-painted dog pups were born in November, and the elephant Rama was born in January 2022.

Chimpanzee Kiazi was born in the fall of 2022, was hand-reared by zoo caretakers and is now being raised by her surrogate mother, Kito.
