Moray's Beaver Travel agency taken over by family-owned Inverness Travel
MORAY'S Beaver Travel has been taken over by an Inverness-based holiday firm.
Three staff members from Beaver Travel's Elgin and Forres branches will join the team at Inverness Travel, which has also taken over the operations of Inverness-based Alba Travel.
Beaver Travel, which built up strong community links in its 47 years' trading, had outlets in both Elgin's South Street and Forres High Street, with a popular café forming part of the Elgin branch.
Family-owned Inverness Travel announced its expansion across the Highlands and Moray today in a move that is expected to quadruple its business.
Inverness Travel was established in 2014 by husband-and-wife team Scott and Sarah Murray.
The takeover of the two well-known local agents will also see two additional members of staff hired for newly-created support roles.
Inverness Travel says it is committed to maintaining a presence in Elgin and Forres, and is looking for premises to launch new travel boutiques in the coming months.
Mr Murray, managing director of Inverness Travel, said: "Alba Travel and Beaver Travel are trusted names in the Highlands and Moray, and we are committed to delivering the same high quality of service to the communities they have served for over 40 years.
"A big part of that commitment is ensuring that staff are able to continue to work in the communities where they have built lasting relationships with holidaymakers over the years.
"As a business, it is incredibly important to us that we are able to create and retain jobs across the Highlands and Moray – and ensure that travellers receive the continuity of service they require for stress-free travel.
"The last 12 months have been unprecedented in the travel industry, but we are confident that as restrictions are lifted there will be a resurgence of people looking to travel abroad.
"We are already seeing signs of hopeful travellers making plans for the latter half of 2021 and into next year."
In Inverness, staff will relocate to Inverness Travel’s stylish new travel boutique on Strothers Lane.
Mr Murray, who grew up in Forres, is looking forward to bringing Inverness Travel’s services to his home town.
He said: "For the last seven years, we have prided ourselves in providing trustworthy and reliable advice to those looking to travel abroad in Inverness.
"We are grateful for the opportunity to bring our expertise to Elgin and Forres, to help even more holidaymakers book their dream trips."
Widely respected Beaver Travel announced in July last year that it was shedding 19 jobs across its workforce – forced by the impact of Brexit and coronavirus.
Bookings have continued to be remotely supported by a retained core team of specialists.
Beaver Travel became part of the business travel specialist Clyde Group in 2017, which already owned Alba, its main rival.
Mr and Mrs Murray have also co-founded Wanderluxe, a home-working agency based in Sawbridgeworth, near London. Mr Murray is also managing director of Highland hospitality group Cru Holdings.
The Inverness Travel team has won numerous awards for customer service and innovative business practices.

Inverness-based Murray Travel opens luxury travel boutique in Elgin town centre in north of Scotland expansion
A luxury travel firm based in Inverness has opened its first new travel boutique outside the Highland capital as it expands across the north of Scotland.
Murray Travel, which was previously known as Inverness Travel and whose main branch is on Strothers Lane, has opened new premises on Elgin’s busy High Street.
The move follows last year’s takeover of Alba Travel and Beaver Travel, which came with a commitment to maintaining a presence in the Moray town.
Director Scott Murray, who runs the busines with wife Sarah, said: “We’re delighted to have opened our new travel boutique in Elgin, delivering on our commitment to retaining travel industry jobs and access to high quality travel services in Moray.
“When we brought Alba Travel and Beaver Travel into the Murray Travel family last year, we knew it was important that customers should be able to continue to book holidays with the agents they have come to know and trust over the years.
“Those local relationships are so important to us, as people and as a business, and we are proud to be able to continue the tradition of providing first-class travel advice in Elgin.”
The new site will allow the team of local travel agents to work with customers in store and remotely. A third site in Forres will follow later this year.
Following the template set by its Strothers Lane HQ, customers can look forward to a complimentary bar and coffee when they visit the Elgin branch.
Mr Murray added: “Our ethos has always been to focus on quality of service rather than pushy sales. We want our customers to feel relaxed and to enjoy the experience of booking their holiday – the team’s only goal is to help travellers find the trip of a lifetime.”
Murray Travel – which has been shortlisted for Luxury Travel Agency of the Year at the TTG Luxury Travel Awards – was established by the couple in 2014. They added to their portfolio in 2021 with the takeover of local agencies Alba Travel and Beaver Travel. Mr and Mrs Murray also co-founded Wanderluxe, a homeworking agency based in Sawbridgeworth, and Mr Murray is managing director of Highland hospitality group, Cru Holdings.
Murray Travel is a member of ABTA, AITO and the Scottish Passenger Agents’ Association.

Top of the Shops – Beaver Travel, Elgin
This special award is for the single high street store that most impressed the TTG team while visiting all 50 shortlisted branches.
A coffee machine or a drinks-fridge is not an unusual feature in a high street travel agency in 2016. But Beaver Travel in Elgin has brewed up something rather special with its fully functioning in-store café.
“We saw a similar set-up while on holiday in New Zealand, where a café and a tourist board office had been combined, and thought perhaps it could work for us,” explains owner Fiona Widdowson.
Ten years ago, Beaver Travel therefore moved into a much larger premises on a busy corner, with an expansive shop-front. A six-month refurbishment turned this former shoe shop into a smart wooden-floored retail space with the café and a gift shop at the front, and six travel desks at the back.
It’s a light, airy space, with comfy leather sofas in the café, and neat brochure shelves and world maps in the agency area. Judges loved the tasteful colour-scheme of mint, teal and blue that runs throughout the store, even stretching to the team’s elegant uniform.
While some of the shop’s windows advertise holiday suggestions, there is as much focus on the goods that can be purchased in the gift-shop, from travel-themed stationery and books to greetings cards and high-quality children’s toys, making it difficult to walk by without stopping.
Beaver’s café does a roaring trade, with its homemade soup, salads, cakes and biscuits seeing it rated one of the best of the 72 restaurants in Elgin on TripAdvisor. There is often an internationally-inspired dish of the week, but haggis panini remains the café’s best-seller.
Both the café and gift shop have proven incredibly good for business, but it wasn’t just gourmet coffee that turned our judges’ heads at this store: knowledgeable staff, impeccable customer service and clever ways of working with the local community are what makes the travel agency side of the business just as successful. And thanks to having an incredibly friendly and close-knit team, you can be sure of a welcome as warm as its freshly-baked scones at Beaver Travel.

Clyde Travel Management has acquired Beaver Travel for an undisclosed sum.
Beaver Travel, which operates offices in Forres and Elgin, was established by the Widdowson family in 1999.
Clyde Travel Management , which owns Alba Travel in Inverness, said the Beaver Travel team will continue to operate under its existing management.
Fiona Widdowson who, along with her husband Ian, nurtured Beaver Travel for the last 18 years said: “We are confident that under the management of Paul Cronje and his team, Beaver Travel will continue to serve the communities it operates in with the professionalism, expertise and kindness it has done for the last 40 years.
“We would like to thank everyone for their support and loyalty over the past 18 years we have been involved, and in particular we thank the fantastic team at Beaver who make it the business it is.”

Commenting on the acquisition, Clyde Travel Management director Paul Cronje said: “We are delighted to have Beaver Travel join the Clyde family.

“Both brands are established institutions in their own communities, having both been in existence for over 40 years.
“We already enjoy a lot of shared values and I’m sure we will learn many good practices from each other as we move forward.”

Moray travel agent Beaver cuts 19 jobs
A WIDELY respected Moray travel agent has announced it is cutting 19 jobs across its workforce – forced by the impact of Brexit and coronavirus.
Beaver Travel, which has built up strong community links in its 47 years' trading, runs outlets in both Elgin's South Street and Forres High Street, with a popular café forming part of the Elgin branch.
The 19 people are being made redundant across both branches – including five at Forres and all eight Elgin café staff.
A spokesperson said customers, both existing and new bookings, would continue to be remotely supported by a retained core team of local specialists and that branch reopening dates were still to be determined.
The company praised staff for their dedication in a statement issued today. Beaver Travel's director said the "painful decision" had been taken to ensure the firm's survival after every other avenue had been explored.
Paul Cronje, director, said: "We are deeply saddened to have to be taking this action.
"Prior to the devastating coronavirus pandemic, business performances in 2019 across both Elgin and Forres branches were negatively affected by Brexit uncertainty.
"The considerable challenges we then faced going into 2020 to achieve profitability have been dwarfed by the devastating long-term impact of the coronavirus pandemic.
"Following a month-long consultation period, we must take this very regrettable action now in order to ensure the business will survive, albeit with a significantly reduced operational capacity.
"We have done everything we can to try and retain jobs, but we are now faced with a set of circumstances where we have exhausted all other options."
He added: "The 19 employees affected across both our Elgin and Forres branches – including all eight of the Elgin branch café staff – must be commended for their dedication and commitment throughout their time with Beaver Travel.
"Whilst we are facing adversity, all customer holiday bookings will remain protected, and we have ensured Beaver Travel will continue to offer our customers expert travel support and a large and diverse holiday package offering."
A statement was also issued to customers this morning.
Mr Cronje assured customers that current bookings would be unaffected, adding: "We remain available to support you with queries regarding current or future bookings."
Beaver Travel became part of the business travel specialist Clyde Group in 2017, which already owned its main rival, Alba Travel, based in Inverness.
The cuts come less than two weeks after shoe shop Clarks announced the closure of its Elgin branch, affecting nine jobs.

Travel agency returns to Forres high street as business continues local expansion
A leading luxury travel agency has opened a travel boutique in Forres as part of ambitious plans for growth.
Murray Travel’s new outlet are its third in the north of Scotland and occupy the familiar building once occupied by Beaver Travel.
The move follows last year’s takeover of Alba Travel and Beaver Travel, which came with a commitment to maintaining a presence in both Forres and Elgin. The firm’s Elgin branch opened earlier this year.
Director Scott Murray, who grew up in Forres and lives nearby in Nairn, said: “Opening our new boutique in Forres is the realisation of a year’s worth of hard work and determination to provide the people of Forres with high quality travel services.
Local community
“When we took on Alba Travel and Beaver Travel last year, we promised to remain engaged with the local community in Forres – and now that we have found the perfect premises, we’re delighted to be back in action. For me to be returning to work in the town where I grew up is a great feeling.
“It’s important to us that our customers feel at ease when making travel arrangements, so we are pleased that they will see many familiar faces when visiting our new boutique. Our travel advisors are passionate about finding holidaymakers the trip of a lifetime, and can’t wait to start working with people in the area again.”
Informal, relaxed atmosphere
Murray Travel’s Forres team will work in store and remotely to offer customers true flexibility when making their travel arrangements. The boutique maintains the same informal, relaxed atmosphere as its branches in Inverness and Elgin. Customers are greeted with complimentary coffee – or a drink from the onsite bar – as they discuss their holiday plans, in an environment that feels more like a VIP luxury lounge than a traditional travel agency.
Murray Travel was established in 2014 by husband-and-wife team Scott and Sarah Murray, who added to their portfolio in 2021 with the takeover of local agencies Alba Travel and Beaver Travel.
