Review: Brantley Gilbert Makes Country Rock on 2017 The Devil Don’t Sleep Tour

Midway through his 2017  The Devil Don't Sleep Tour stop at Darien Lake Performing Arts Center on Sunday night (July 30), Brantley Gilbert  turned down the volume, helped a fan pull off a  marriage proposal  and chatted with the crowd for a few minutes. As a traveling musician, Gilbert told them, he spends a lot of time away from home, and that can be tough (especially with a baby on the way ); the fans, though, have always treated him like family, as though he was home no matter how far away from it he really ways.

"A thank you will never cut it," Gilbert said, dedicating his current single, "The Ones That Like Me,"  to those who have helped him find that home away from home. "This is for the folks who know there's more to us than tattoos and chains."

Gilbert's 90-minute set is loud and rowdy, to be sure: The set-opening "It's About to Get Dirty" is accompanied by fire and popping pyrotechnics. He closes his show, pre-encore, with the party-ready "The Weekend," "Take It Outside," "Kick It in the Sticks" and "Bottoms Up." When Gilbert turns over the spotlight to them, his band pulls out some classic rock and metal guitar riffs. And those moments are plenty of fun, but some of the best moments of Gilbert's set are the quieter ones that someone new to Gilbert's music might not expect from a tough guy like him.

Gilbert's hit "You Don't Know Her Like I Do" is, on this tour, accompanied by photos of Gilbert and his wife Amber on the giant screens at the back of the stage. In some, they're younger -- Gilbert has only a little bit of scruff, as opposed to his more recognizable full beard -- and he's without his usual ballcap; others are pictures from their wedding day. "Outlaw in Me," a  The Devil Don't Sleep album cut, spurred Gilbert to give thanks for the women, like his wife, who love the guys like him, and speak happily about his unborn son, who is due later this year.

The piece de resistance , though, might just be "One Hell of an Amen." The recorded version of the song already has weight to it, as Gilbert sings about a soldier who dies fighting for his country and someone fighting cancer; live, Gilbert precedes the song with thanks for the military members in attendance and sends love to those affected by cancer, and he sings the song with stained-glass church windows displayed on the screens behind him.

If there were dry eyes in the crowd, they were few and far between. As the end-of-song cheers from the crowd died down, a "USA! USA! USA!" chant broke out, unaided by Gilbert or his band.

"There aren't many times I'm speechless," Gilbert told the audience, "... and that was one of 'em."

Gilbert's  The Devil Don't Sleep Tour is scheduled to run through late September. A complete list of upcoming stop is available on his website .

Brantley Gilbert Announces New Album, 2017 Tour

Brantley Gilbert made all of his fans’ Friday even sweeter when he announced that he would be hitting the road in 2017 – and that he’s bringing new music with him.

He took to Facebook on Friday afternoon to announce that his new album, titled The Devil Don’t Sleep , is slated to be available on Jan. 13. That release coincides with a corresponding tour of the same name.

“All my records are chapters of my life, they tell a story and this last chapter, there’s always the good the bad the ugly. But this last chapter has been extremely good. I got married and that’s the best thing that’s ever happened to me,” he shared via Facebook Live. “But ‘The Devil Don’t Sleep’ is all about knowing that the devil is always there and there’s always temptation. It’s a constant reminder to me to look forward and keep my nose in the right direction.”

Tucker Beathard and Luke Combs will be making the musical road trip alongside Gilbert. Dates for that trek will be announced in November. Pre-orders for The Devil Don’t Sleep album will begin Oct. 12.

Brantley Gilbert Tour Dates 2017

For Brantley Gilbert, his back-to-back platinum success comes from writing about his life – and watching the people who live like he does respond. If Halfway To Heaven was the story of a young man in the clutches of all it means to be wild, and Just As I Am considered the consequences of the life and the good times getting there, The Devil Don’t Sleep marks the next phase of the working class country icon in the making’s life.

Sixteen songs on the regular disc. Ten more on the Deluxe Edition . It’s a whole lot of music from country music’s hardest hitting songwriter/artist. It’s also a lot of life lived.

“A lot has happened,” marvels the man nominated for CMA Song of the Year for Jason Aldean’s signature “Dirt Road Anthem.” “And anyone who knows me knows that every album is another chapter of my life. Even though it’s my life, even though some of what I write about is very specific to what happens to me, I think the challenges, the places where we figure things out are all the same – no matter what we’re facing, realizations all mean the same things.”

Though “The Weekend” explodes as one of Gilbert’s industrial strength five o’clock Friday party anthems, The Devil Don’t Sleep works a celebratory tip for other reasons. As Gilbert is quick to point out, the songs offer a cautionary undertow because, as the title suggests, temptation is a non-stop reality – and people need vigilance to avoid backsliding into the very things that defeat them.

“By now, everyone knows the story turned out okay for me,” laughs the man who sold out his entire BlackOut arena tour last winter, as well as his Take It Outside amphitheater tour which closed with two nights at Red Rocks. “But the truth is there’s always temptation, there’s always something – whether it’s work or substances or gambling or whatever – that can pull you off the path. For me, thankfully, I got through it, got the girl back, got to keep my career moving…”

As a tortured soul trying to walk the straight and narrow but always feeling the pull of the devil’s right hand, The Devil Don’t Sleep is supplemented with a Deluxe version that captures the roots of his songwriting and the essence of his blistering live shows. The expanded package represents a fuller look into the hard-hitting songwriter’s journey to where he is now: one of four country artists to mine back-to-back platinum albums for sticking to his unapologetically rock-country hybrid on Halfway To Heaven and Just As I Am , six #1s including Aldean’s “Dirt Road Anthem” and “My Kind of Party” and his own “Country Music Be Country Wide,” “Bottoms Up,” “You Don’t Know Her Like I Do” and the deeply personal “One Hell Of An Amen,” two consecutive sold-out headlining tours and the love of the girl he lost along the way and the 2014 American Music Award for Favorite Country Album.

Tapping into the outlier, the roughneck, the downhome and the downtrodden, the songwriter/rocker from Jefferson, Georgia tears music from actual life, Gilbert knows vigilance is required even in the best of times. Gilbert admits, “Trying to get the whole story on the album was a little more than we’d bargained for. We tried every which way, but in the end, it seemed like we needed to do the straight-up record. But then for the folks who really go deep, I wanted to give them a piece of the last year on the road. We recorded live at Red Rocks at the end of the tour, and you can feel how hard they rocked. And I wanted that on this record…”

And he’s also heard the fans, who keep asking for older songs that have never been available on record. Amongst the previously unreleased tracks to be included on The Devil Don’t Sleep Deluxe are “You Promised,” with over 24 million YouTube views and “I’ve Been There Before.”

“Life isn’t just chapters,” explains the songwriter/rocker. “What happens before influences what happens next. Not always the way you’d expect. Sometimes you don’t even see it ‘til later. But with these CDs, I feel like it’s the story and then more of the story. You know, depending on how deep you want to go, it’s a way to understand the journey to The Devil Don’t Sleep .”

Brantley Gilbert Announces ‘The Devil Don’t Sleep’ Album, Tour

Brantley Gilbert  has announced that his next album will hit stores and digital retailers in January, titled  The Devil Don't Sleep . During a Facebook live chat with fans the " The Weekend " singer shared details of his fourth studio album and a tour.

During a short chat, Gilbert revealed The Devil Don't Sleep album will be released on Jan. 13, with pre-sales beginning Oct. 12. It's not clear when tour dates will begin, as Gilbert's audio was silent for most of his Facebook Live session. However, Tucker Beathard and Luke Combs will join him with songwriter Brian Davis on many dates.

The Devil Don't Sleep is Gilbert's fourth studio album, and his first since Just As I Am in May 2014. That album touched on the build up and breakup with his girlfriend Jana Kramer . Since then he's gotten married , although "The Weekend" is hardly a song about a domesticated man. It's another country-rocker in the spirit of "Bottoms Up," a style that shows off his bad boy side.

On tour last summer Gilbert introduced fans to another rocker called "Dirty." His music has been an edgy mix of hard rock songs and tender ballads. He's always been outspoken on and off stage, and his albums always reflect what is going on in his life. It's likely he'll stay true to his method of writing and recording. He has always written every song on his albums.
