See which players have earned their 2023 DP World Tour cards

european tour card 2023

Nathan Kimsey kept his cool to win both the Rolex Challenge Tour Grand Final and the Road to Mallorca rankings on the Challenge Tour.

The top 20 from the final rankings earned their cards on the 2023 DP World Tour , which starts in three weeks!

It was a nail biting back nine for most of the field, as the top 20 cut off kept adjusting with the live scores.

With three holes to play, Kimsey was tied at the top with fellow Englishman Matthew Baldwin. Kimsey parred his way in to card a final round 70 to win by one from John Parry and Bruce Easton.

To show how close things were, Baldwin, who was in reaching distance of the double closed with two bogies, which meant instead of finishing first on the Challenge Tour ranking ended the season in 19th.

How To Earn A European Tour Card

There are many ways to qualify for a European Tour card which gives membership to the European Tour, now known as the DP World Tour

Q-School leaderboard European Tour Card

There are two basic ways to get a European Tour card and thus membership of the European Tour, or DP World Tour as it is now known : you have it and retain it, or you qualify to move onto the Tour. There are many different routes to retain membership, just as there are for qualification.

The DP World tour operates, in effect, a promotion and relegation system with the Challenge Tour. It used to be that the top 110 on the Race to Dubai were guaranteed ‘staying up’ and the top players on the Challenge Tour’s Road to Mallorca were ‘promoted’. Those promoted this way used to be the top 15 but with Q-School (more of which later) suspended during the pandemic, it has been the top 20. Similarly, it has been the top 121 on the Race to Dubai who have ‘stayed up’ recently.

There are other ways to retain Tour membership which do not rely upon the final position in the Race to Dubai. Winning a DP World Tour event earns exemption from ‘relegation’, with the more prestigious the tournament, the more the number of seasons exemption a victory earns. Race to Dubai winners also gain lengthy exemptions. Some players can even retain membership on the basis of career performances, under a category of membership known rather delightfully and officially as ‘Legends’.

But how can you qualify for the Tour for the next season if not already on it during the current season? Well, a strong finishing position on the Challenge Tour’s order of merit is one way. Winning the order of merit of other selected tours around the world also brings with it DP World Tour membership.

But what if you are a golfer who fancies joining the Tour and none of the above applies? For them there is Qualifying School, or Q-School as it is known.

This was not held in 2020 or 2021 because of the pandemic. But ordinarily it is run over three stages and the top 25 in the final stage earn Tour membership. Some players are exempt from having to enter at stage one, and automatically qualify for either stage two or stage three.

Stages one and two are four-round tournaments at various venues. Stage three is a six-round tournament at one venue in Spain (most recently at in Tarragona at Lumine Golf Club , now renamed Infinitum )  with 156 entrants, with a cut after four rounds. The top 25 win Tour membership.

It costs to enter Q-School – the fee was €1,800 in 2019, the last time Q-School has been held. That year 842 golfers teed it up in the first stage across nine different venues with 183 players qualifying through this process to join those players whose exemption took them straight into stage two.

You do not need to become a PGA Professional if you fancy a shot at Tour glory and a European Tour card. The good news is any male amateur golfer can enter Q-School so long as they have a handicap of 0.4 or lower. The bad news is that shot is probably the longest of longshots: the last time Q-School was held, more than 1,000 golfers entered in quest of those 25 spots.

All the info on 2023 PDC Q-School: How to get a PDC Tour Card and what can be done with it?

From January 9 to 15, the European and UK Q-School will be held. Divided between the two venues, 27 new PDC Tour Cards are ready for the 2023-24 PDC seasons.

The number of Tour Cards per venue has been determined based on the number of entries. Fourteen Tour Cards will be distributed at the European Q-School, while there's thirteen Tour Cards on offer at the UK Q-School.

The Return of the King as Corey Cadby aims to return to PDC Tour in 2023, enters European Q-School in January

Q-School divided into two phases

As in the past two years, the Q-School is divided into two phases. The first phase will take place from Jan. 9 through Jan. 11, followed by the final phase from Jan. 12 through Jan. 15.

Players who lost their PDC Tour Card last season or finished in the top eight on the Challenge Tour and Development Tour are immediately qualified for the final phase.

Other participants must start in the first stage. A spot for the final stage can be achieved by reaching the last four in Kalkar on one of the three playing days, or the last eight in Milton Keynes. Should that fail, players must make sure to win as many points as possible. Each win in a full round (without byes) earns one point. Through the Q-School Order of Merit of the first stage, players also advance to the final stage.

Tour Card distribution during final stage

The Tour Cards are only actually distributed during the final stage. Of the 27 available Tour Cards, eight are distributed immediately. On both the British and European Q-School, four days of play will be completed during the final phase. The eight direct cards will go to all daily winners at the tournaments.

The remaining 19 Tour Cards can be earned through the Q-School Order of Merit. At both events, points can be earned per win (not counting preliminaries), these go 10 for EU and 9 for UK due to entry numbers.

With several consistent results, players can still get a Tour Card this way, without having a daily win.

What can you do with a Tour Card?

Players in possession of a Tour Card can participate in the Pro Tour tournaments. In addition, you may participate in the qualifying tournaments for the Euro Tour events, the qualifiers for the Grand Slam of Darts and World Series of Darts Finals and the very last World Championship qualifying tournament.

Can you still play on the PDC circuit without a Tour Card?

Especially for players who have missed out on a Tour Card, the PDC Challenge Tour has been set up. That's 24 tournaments, each with a top prize of 2,500 pounds. Players can also participate in Associate Qualifiers for the Euro Tours and, in addition, there is a Development Tour for players under the age of 24.

While Adrian Meronk ‘s year wasn’t enough to earn him a spot on the Ryder Cup team , he’ll be able to prove European captain Luke Donald wrong from the PGA Tour.

Meronk was one of 10 DP World Tour pros who punched their tickets to the PGA Tour Sunday at the DP World Tour Championship .

As part of the expanded strategic alliance between the two tours, for the first time ever this season, the top 10 finishers in the DP World Tour’s Race to Dubai standings not otherwise exempt, were awarded PGA Tour cards.

After a T32 finish in Dubai this week, Meronk locked up the No. 4 spot in the order of merit but will be the top player in the new exemption category. The top finishers in the Race to Dubai were Rory McIlroy , Nicolai Hojgaard and Jon Rahm who all already have PGA Tour status for next season and don’t count toward the new cards allocated.

Hojgaard secured his PGA Tour card as a Special Temporary Member and accumulated the requisite number of non-member FedEx Cup points. Min Woo Lee, who finished 10th in the Race to Dubai, also secured his card via Special Temporary Membership and doesn’t count toward the 10 cards.

And while Hojgaard, who won the DP World Tour Championship by two shots over Viktor Hovland, Tommy Fleetwood and Matt Wallace, already had his PGA Tour status secured, his twin brother Rasmus wasn’t as fortunate.

Nicolai Hojgaard raises the DP World Tour Championship trophy.

Rasmus entered the final event of the DP World Tour season 16th in the season-long standings but watched as Matthieu Pavon birdied his final four holes to rocket up the leaderboard and bump Rasmus out of a PGA Tour card.

Pavon ended up finishing 15th in the standings, nabbing the 8th PGA Tour card while Rasmus was 18th and just 27 points short of the last of the 10 PGA Tour cards.

Here are each of the 10 DP World Tour players who just earned their PGA Tour cards.

New alliance gives PGA Tour cards to 10 European tour players

  • Associated Press

The PGA Tour is awarding cards to the leading 10 players from the European tour and bringing back a direct path to the PGA Tour through Q-school.

The changes were outlined Tuesday as part of an extended partnership between the PGA Tour and European tour through 2035. As part of the joint venture, the PGA Tour has increased its share in European Tour Productions from 15% to 40%.

PGA Tour commissioner Jay Monahan last week outlined significant changes to the schedule that will feature a January-to-August season starting in 2024 and create purses of $20 million on average for eight elite events.

The recent changes give European tour players immediate access to the PGA Tour. The leading 10 players -- excluding those already on the PGA Tour, such as Rory McIlroy and Jon Rahm -- will have full cards for the following year.

The partnership is likely to create better coordination of a global schedule for both tours. The Scottish Open next week is the first tournament co-sanctioned by both, and the field is the strongest in tournament history.

"While this closer collaboration between our tours was always in the road map of our strategic alliance, it's pretty obvious to say the current situation in golf has significantly accelerated that process," European tour CEO Keith Pelley said.

In addition to access to the leading 10 European tour players, the PGA Tour is restructuring who it brings on domestically.

The tour now offers cards to the top 25 players on the Korn Ferry Tour, with an additional 25 cards from a three-tournament series for players from the Korn Ferry Tour and PGA Tour members who finished outside the top 125.

Starting in 2023, the top 30 players from the Korn Ferry Tour will get cards. For everyone else, there will be Q-school in which the top five players and ties go straight to the PGA Tour. The tour has not offered direct access from Q-school since 2013. That means top college players will have a chance to avoid a year on the Korn Ferry Tour.

The PGA Tour believes that with 30 cards to Korn Ferry Tour players, 10 from Europe and five or more from Q-school, it will create more opportunities for those who finished just outside the top 125 and have only conditional access.

"Ultimately for us it's all about creating the best, most efficient competitive platform for the best players in the world to ... establish context, to establish historical relevancy and to establish relevancy in the eyes of fans throughout the world," Monahan said.

Based on last year's European rankings, the leading 10 players would have gone all the way down to Laurie Canter of England at No. 24 (Canter is now part of LIV Golf).

Pelley said the European tour should not be looked upon as a "feeder tour" because of a schedule that features national opens across continental Europe and the Middle East swing, such as Abu Dhabi and Dubai.

Even so, with historically two dozen of the top finishers in Europe on the PGA Tour -- the leading 10 and current U.S. members -- they would be playing fewer events in Europe.

Previously, players from the European tour and other main tours around the world could have earned money from majors, World Golf Championships or sponsor starts on the PGA Tour and earned a card if they were equivalent to No. 125 or better.

The new system would have helped U.S. Open champion Matt Fitzpatrick . He reached the top 50 in the world in 2015 but kept falling short of the 125 number and didn't earn a PGA Tour card until after the 2019 season. Under the new system, he would have been eligible to join the PGA Tour three years earlier.

Pelley, meanwhile, said he met with Golf Saudi in Malta last summer, presented its presentation to the European board and decided the offer was less compelling than the one it had turned down from the Premier Golf League some nine months earlier.

The European tour previously worked with Golf Saudi when the Saudi International was part of its schedule for three years. Pelley said he proposed Golf Saudi get involved with Europe's feeder Challenge Tour.

"I've been consistent that if, in fact, they are interested to play inside the ecosystem and not launch a rival tour that I think is detrimental to the game at large, then I personally, from DP World's perspective, would be open -- and they know that -- to having a conversation," he said.

"But I'm not interested and that's why there has been no conversation since the summer of 2021."

LPGA to award tour cards to top Ladies European Tour players starting in 2025

1608339864

Ramsey Cardy

The alliance between the LPGA Tour and the Ladies European Tour is set to grow stronger in 2024. Multiple sources tell Golf Digest that principals on both sides of the Atlantic have agreed to a plan where the top four players off next year’s LET Race to Costa Del Sol season-long points list will be awarded LPGA cards for the 2025 season. Additionally, the top 10 players will be exempt into this year’s Q-Series, the LPGA’s final stage of qualifying school. Each move also may be the first stages of an even more formal partnership moving forward.

The timing of a formal announcement about the card exchange is unknown. According to multiple sources, the two tours initially were looking at letting the LET players join the LPGA in the 2024 season based on 2023 results. At a mandatory player meeting ahead of last month’s Kroger Queen City Championship, LPGA commissioner Mollie Marcoux Samaan alongside LPGA player president Vicki Goetze-Ackerman, Chief Legal and IT Officer Liz Moore, and Chief Tour Business and Operations Officer Ricki Lasky, shared with LPGA members details about the plan. According to multiple attendees of the meeting, that Sept. 5 discussion was met with numerous questions as players voiced concern about adding cards for next year so close to the end of the 2023 season, when at the time there were only three full-field events left on the schedule.

The LPGA, in response to the players’ concerns, reversed course on handing the LET cards out in 2024. Both Marcoux Samaan and LET Chair Marta Figueras-Dotti emailed their player bodies on Sept. 9 explaining that cards would no longer be available for 2024.

“It was clear that the primary and immediate area of concern was the suggested introduction of LPGA Tour cards for the 2024 season,” Marcoux Samaan stated in an email to players obtained by Golf Digest. “We fully understand and appreciate the concerns raised on this point, and we recognize the importance of providing a quick response on this term. Based on your input and a discussion at the LPGA Board meeting [Sept. 5], we revisited this topic with LET leadership and have collectively agreed to amend the proposal so that LPGA Tour cards will be effective in 2025, rather than 2024.”

european tour card 2023

The four LET players would be part of a current status category, but receive unique treatment in Category 9 on the LPGA's priority list, which is the same level as players earning cards by finishing in the top 10 on the Epson Tour's money list. The category is traditionally high enough where players can compete in all full-field events on the LPGA. By comparison, that category provides higher status than those who finished 81-100 on the previous year's CME points list.

However, there is a difference between Epson and LET players in how they receive that status. While only the top 10 on the Epson money list get cards for the next year , regardless of whether they might have LPGA status through another category, players who qualify for status through the LET's points list would “roll down” to players lower on the list if somebody above them already is an LPGA member.

For instance, Celine Boutier leads the LET's Order of Merit thanks to her wins at the Amundi Evian Championship and the Freed Group Women's Scottish Open. Because Boutier already has full (and better) status than the category would provide her, Boutier's card rolls down instead to Diksha Dagar. The fourth card would go to Trichat Cheenglab, who is currently in fifth place. The “rolling down” would not exceed 10th place on the points list, however, and players with LPGA status that is worse than a LET points-list card are eligible to earn them.

Similarly, the LPGA will start with 10 players receiving exemptions into Q-Series from the LET points list this year and bump that to the top 15 and ties in 2024. The LPGA first gave exemptions to LET players for Q-Series in 2021, when it granted them to those who finished in the top five and ties on the points list. That expanded in 2022 to exemptions for the top 10 and ties, which will remain the same this year.

The final event of the LET schedule, the Andalucia Costa Del Sol Open de España, concludes Nov. 26. That gives players just two days to get to the U.S. with Q-Series practice rounds at Magnolia Grove G.C. in Mobile, Ala., beginning Nov. 28 and the six-round event beginning Nov. 30.

1443104236

Since taking over as LPGA Commissioner in 2021, Mollie Marcoux Samaan has noted the possibility of a closer relationship between the LPGA and Ladies European Tour, including a possible merger of the two organizations.

Douglas P. DeFelice

Asked for comment about the card exchange, an LPGA official released the following statement:

“When the LPGA partnered with the LET and formed the joint venture in 2019, the goal was to strengthen women's golf globally. The partnership has been very successful. As was reported earlier this year, we've been evaluating what the next iteration of our relationship looks like with the goal of continuing to enhance opportunities for members on all tours and strengthening the women’s game. These opportunities include providing additional pathways from the LET to the LPGA Tour. Throughout, we’ve spoken with members from both the LET and LPGA about the partnership and potential opportunities in full player meetings, in small group meetings and individually. We’ll continue to engage our members as we evaluate and determine the specific next steps in our relationship with the LET."

Indeed, the arrangement between the two tours is the latest development in the expanding relationship between the LPGA and LET since the two groups formed a joint venture in 2019 when Mike Whan was the LPGA's commissioner. The tours reached a multi-year agreement, where the two would run the LET 50-50. Since becoming commissioner in 2021, Marcoux Samaan has discussed multiple times possibly evolving the relationship from a joint venture to a merger, including at last year's CME Tour Championship and at the first player meeting this year in March .

During Marcoux Samaan’s presentation to LPGA players last month, more details were discussed about what a merger might entail including what the governance of the two tours might look like, conflicting-event releases between the two tours and other financial considerations. It’s unclear, however, if any definitive measures have been worked out and where discussions stand within each membership.

2023 European Challenge Tour: 20 points leaders who earned DP World Tour cards

european tour card 2023

The 2023 European Challenge Tour season ended on Sunday with the season-ending Rolex Challenge Tour Grand Final, which was played this season at Club de Golf Alcanada in Port d'Alcúdia, Mallorca, Spain.

At the end of the tournament, won by Marco Penge, the top 20 players on the 2023 points list earned DP World Tour cards for next season.

Penge earned his second win of the year in the 30-event docket, jumping up to the top spot in the Road to Mallorca, which is the season-long points race.

Casey Jarvis finished in second place on the points list after the 45-player tournament concluded.

Stuart Manley earned the 20th and final card from the points list, despite finishing in 21st place. He had that opportunity as Alex Fitzpatrick, who finished 11th in the final points list after not playing this week, had already earned a DP World Tour card through his status on the DP World Tour's Race to Dubai.

Manley was in last place coming into the final round, but his closing 71 on Sunday was good enough to move to T-41 and clear through into the final available spot.

The Challenge Tour graduates will be able to start their new journey on the DP World Tour in three weeks, after the 2022-2023 DP World Tour season ends at the DP World Tour Championship in Dubai in two weeks.
