Parents looking for affordable things to do with yours kids this summer? We've got you

ZANESVILLE − Summer has arrived and that means the kids are home and ready for fun.

While a lot of their time might be spent with friends, going to summer camps, or prepping for next year’s sport’s seasons, there will be many moments when they say: “I’m bored! Let’s do something.”

We have a few answers you can pull out of your back pocket that will keep them entertained without breaking your budget.

Summer means baseball games

There really isn’t any experience like going to the ballpark, and the minor league Columbus Clippers clock in at just under an hour from Zanesville. Plus, they make Huntington Park so family-friendly your kids might not even realize they’re at a baseball game.

Lawn seat tickets start at just $6 for kids 12 and younger and only $8 for adults, and the prices don’t climb much higher than that. And if you go on a promotion night, you can get hot dogs for 10 cents on Dime-A-Dog night or $1 concession items on Dollar Days.

The MVP Kids Club offers several discounts and unique experiences for one fee of $35 that includes a free game ticket at any level every Sunday with an accompanying adult. Plus, the Clippers offer youth team or organizations special outings at special prices if you want to take your little league team.

Kids with valid student IDs can get reserved seats and $5 in Clippers cash to use at the game for only $10 on Thursdays and Fridays. Sunday home games have family bundles, which include two adult and up to four children or senior bleacher, standing room, or lawn seats for only $18. You can upgrade your bundle to reserved seats for $27.

Head to the swimming pool

Zanesville is lucky to sport a few pools that will give you not only relief from the heat, but a fun, safe place for your kids to hang all day with their friends.

The Dresden Swim Center located at 1330 Main St. offers free admission for children 2 and under and a variety of passes for whatever type of family or child attendance you’re looking for. Plus, it’s got a very cool mushroom with falling water you can swim under.

The Frazeysburg Pool located at 141 E 5th St. got a new pump over the winter which should keep this beauty running perfectly through the dog days of summer. It also offers a variety of passes, including day passes, for families, children, and seniors.

The Muskingum County Family YMCA located at 1425 Newark Rd. offers two indoor pools for patrons to use year-round. Anyone can come and use the pool at any time during the year at a rate of $10 per day without a YMCA membership. However, the YMCA also offers a special summer membership from May 15 to Aug. 15.

Park it at the park

Zanesville has no shortage of public parks and trails for you to take your kids this summer, and best of all, it’s all free and open to the public. From Zane's Landing to Riverside, parks are a great place for a picnic, a walk on one of the trails or through the park, and playgrounds for kids of all ages. If you head to the Historic Lock #10 in Canal Park, you can cruise the trail and show your kids a working lock.

But if you hit up all Zanesville parks and need to try something new, Cambridge offers a beautiful city park at 1101 McFarland Drive with a swimming pool, baseball fields, and playgrounds, just 25 minutes east. There's also the seven mile Great Guernsey Trail walk that runs from east Cambridge to Lore City. Walk along the paved trail and you're likely to see waterfowl, rabbits, bald eagles and other local wildlife.

Hit the beach at a state park

Sure, the city pools are cleaner, you can see the bottom, and you don’t walk away with sand in your bathing suit, but summer isn’t really summer without at least one trip to a beach near you. And for Zanesville, that likely starts at Dillon State Park Beach in Nashport, just 13 miles from downtown. But if you want to try something new, there are options to the east and the west.

Of course, you can head 40 minutes east to Salt Fork State Park in Claysville, just outside of Cambridge, or 35 minutes west to Buckeye Lake State Park in Thornville, and enjoy either of those beaches. Like people, every beach has its own personality from playgrounds to snacks, and everything in between depending on our needs.

But one thing they all have in common? They’re free and open to the public all summer long.

Speaking of state parks…

State karks aren’t just for beaches during the summer, and it only takes a quick search on the internet to figure out that each one has a unique set of attractions, typically free, that you and the kids can enjoy, including trails, caves, and other natural elements.

A few more you can check out within an hour of Zanesville include Blue Rock State Park, Muskingum River State Park, Wolfrun State Park, and Blacklick State Park. There are many more, big and small, and they’re worth taking a look at.

Festivals and fairs are mandatory summer fun

There is one thing Zanesville will not be short on this summer and that’s festivals. The vast majority of them are free and open to the public, and many of them offer family-friendly activities, from the Pride Celebration this month to the Summer Series concerts offered all summer long.

As far as fairs are concerned, the Ohio State Fair comes in first from July 24 through Aug. 4. Children under 5 are free and tickets for kids are just $10 a day. The rides can get a little unwieldy in terms of cost, but if you limit the number of rides, you can get them at just $1 a pop. There’s also the Muskingum County Fair from Aug. 11 through the 17 at $10 a ticket or $53 for a full week’s pass. The Guernsey County Fair is the following month from Sept. 9-15.

Museum tours offer unique experiences

Museums are typically air conditioned, quiet, and your kiddos can learn something about anything over the summer at a wide variety of places. The John and Annie Glenn Museum in New Concord is only $3 for students and $7 for adults to get in and see the former childhood home of astronaut John Glenn.

For those who enjoy the arts, there's the Zanesville Museum of Art on Military Road. Admission is free and attendees can see a wide variety of craftsmanship. There's also the Stone Academy on Jefferson Street. Built in 1809 it was the site of the first Ohio Anti-Slavery Society convention and later an Underground Railroad safe house, the building now serves as a local history museum with exhibits and displays of historical artifacts from Zanesville and Muskingum County. The building houses the Putnam Underground Railroad Interpretive Center and the Dale Moore Curry Local History Library and Archives. Call 740-4549500 for hours and admission. While you are in the neighborhood, check out Dr. Increase Matthews House Museum and Gardens.

If you go a little further east you can visit the Stone House Museum (the Kennedy Stone House) for free in Salt Fork State Park. The house was placed on the National Register of Historic Places and has been restored to its original look and feel in the 1800s.

On your way home to Zanesville, feel free to stop in Norwich at the National Road-Zane Grey Museum at $3 for students and $7 for adults. And if you want to go just a little further west to Lancaster and you have a kiddo who is 8 years old or younger, you’ll definitely to check out the Aha Hands-On Adventure Museum. Kids under a year old are free with general admission at $8. Families with EBT or WIC card can get in for a $3 admission charge, for up to 4 family members.

Last but not least, the public library

We can’t say enough about the public library and their dedication to offering summer activities for kids and families. From reading clubs to hands-on events, the Muskingum County Library system is on point and ready to help you keep your kids busy all at the low cost of free. The StoryWalk is a great way to combine reading and the great outdoors, while Exploring the Unknown opens a conversation about BigFoot. There’s also family story times, and much, much more. EV chargers are too boring — and it's holding us back from electrifying the classic American road trip

• Electric-vehicle drivers on road trips often don't have much to do while their cars charge.
• Building charging hubs around attractions and amenities could improve the experience.

There's a missed opportunity at most electric-vehicle charging stations .

As sales of battery-electric vehicles have increased in recent years, the automotive industry and federal and state governments have been racing to install more charging stations. But building a place to plug in is only the first step in changing the way people fuel their cars.

While the automotive industry has done a lot to reduce the amount of time you need to spend plugging in your car on a road trip, EV charging stops may never match the convenience of five-minute stops to fill your gas tank.

Charging stations themselves are also difficult to make money with. A solution: EV charging hubs decked out with restaurants, entertainment, shopping, and anything else that can occupy the hour or two you may need to get a full battery.

That's much like how a gas station works. An ancillary business built around a charging hub could fund the owner's bottom line more reliably than the fuel itself.

EVs need rest stops

We're not exactly reinventing the wheel here.

Many turnpikes and highways in the US have rest stops or travel centers with amenities that allow drivers to stay longer on the road when they need to stretch their legs. These rest stops are usually funded by tolls or other government-backed funding, which is a more complicated issue for EV charging.

Without any clear guidelines, there hasn't been much uniformity in what a charging station can — or should — look like, leading to a Wild West of different designs and locations. Without a clear way forward, there hasn't been much uniformity in what a charging station can look like.

Figures from the Department of Energy indicate that at the start of 2024, there were some 61,000 public charging stations in the US, more than double the number of stations in 2020. But many of these stations are tucked away on dealership lots or in otherwise empty parking lots.

These stations appear to affect EV adoption. Surveys have suggested that access to public charging infrastructure increases adoption .

But they've also suggested that EV drivers are unsatisfied with the charging experience.

EV charging stations need an overhaul

Tesla is experimenting with what a longer charging stop could look like.

Construction is underway in Hollywood on a Supercharger station that would double as a 24-hour restaurant and drive-in movie theater.

CEO Elon Musk floated the idea of a destination station like this in 2018 , saying he wanted to build an "old school drive-in" at a Supercharger location in Los Angeles. In January, an NBC affiliate in Los Angeles reported , citing city documents, that the screens would project short films that occupy the roughly 30 minutes required to charge a Tesla.

The Supercharger station is also supposed to be an attraction of its own, designed to look like a 1950s drive-in and diner — a kitschy stop on a Hollywood road trip.

The design of these charging stations shouldn't just mimic convenience stores and quick-stop establishments. Charging can take a half hour to several hours, depending on the car and the type of charger . That's plenty of time to browse a gift shop, grab a bite to eat, or wander around a roadside attraction.

It has been a winning stretch for Boston, which took series from the Philadelphia Phillies and the New York Yankees on their last homestand before going 5-1 on a trip through Toronto and Cincinnati.

The Red Sox are 9-2 over their past 11 games after heading home following a 7-4 win over the Reds on Sunday, moving them into the third American League wild-card position.

Boston manager Alex Cora sees a talented team from top to bottom that is "playing with joy."

"We went from a roster that we had some question marks early on in the season and now it feels like it's one of the best rosters position-player-wise that we've had in a while," Cora said. "From one to 13, we're not afraid to play them. We're in a good spot right now."

Jarren Duran finished a highlight-filled series with a 3-for-5 performance Sunday to extend his hitting streak to 13 games. He also stole his 20th base.

"He works so hard and he now understands what he needs to do to play every day, to keep his energy the way he should," Cora said.

Of course, starting pitching has also been a major strength. Tanner Houck (7-5, 2.14 ERA) is slated to pitch on Monday.

Houck allowed three runs (two earned) on six hits and struck out five in 5 2/3 innings Tuesday at Toronto. The right-hander had a streak of five straight outings of at least six innings snapped, but the Red Sox were eventual 4-3 winners en route to the series sweep.

Houck, who is 0-1 with a 4.26 ERA in six career outings (five starts) against Toronto, has still not allowed more than three earned runs in 12 straight starts dating to April 12.

"I've always known I can do better," Houck said recently. "I've always known that I had the ability to do it and it was just kind of putting it together."

The Blue Jays are trending in the opposite direction, having lost six straight and fallen to seven games under .500 after being swept in Cleveland.

On top of the extended skid, Orelvis Martinez -- the organization's star prospect who recorded his first major league hit Friday -- received an 80-game suspension after testing positive for a performance-enhancing substance.

"We're in a tough stretch right now," Toronto manager John Schneider said.

The Blue Jays rallied late only to leave two runners on base in the ninth on Sunday.

Still, Spencer Horwitz hit his first two home runs of the season and scored three times. Vladimir Guerrero Jr. also had two hits, including a long ball of his own.

"It was kind of the story of the season -- not hitting as many as we can and giving up more than we should," Schneider said.

Replacing Martinez, Steward Berroa was recalled from Triple-A Buffalo and made a late-game appearance in center field. It was his MLB debut after climbing the ladder since 2017.

"I think a lot of players in the minor leagues have that thought sometimes, where you don't think that the dream is going to come," Berroa said. "But, in the end, I'm just a warrior. I like to be in tough moments. ... I just keep going."

The Blue Jays have not announced starting pitchers for the series in Boston.

Cuphead.EXE, as the name implies, is very similar to his normal counterpart, being a boy with a cup for a head, wearing red shorts, a black long-sleeved shirt, white gloves, and brown shoes. Cuphead.EXE, however, has much wider eyes, which are now white with black sclera instead of the other way around. Cuphead.EXE has a permanent smile, bearing rows of sharp teeth. A crystalline ooze seems to be seeping out of the red and white striped straw that comes from his head. He holds a microphone in his right hand, and his left hand is permanently stuck pointing.

WASHINGTON (AP) — After back-to-back trips to Europe, President Joe Biden plans to head to Camp David next week to prepare for his first 2024 debate with former President Donald Trump , hunkering down at the woodsy Maryland hideaway that has hosted many similar cram sessions in the past.

Biden spent most of last week in France marking the 80th anniversary of D-Day . He goes to Italy on Wednesday for a summit of the Group of Seven industrialized nations and then straight to Los Angeles for a weekend fundraiser featuring Hollywood superstars George Clooney and Julia Roberts.

All that travel has left Biden little time to devote to preparation for the June 27 debate. A second faceoff is set for Sept. 10.

A person with knowledge of the president’s plans, who insisted on anonymity to more freely discuss them, suggested Biden could spend the better part of a week at Camp David getting ready for the first debate.

But others involved in the planning said Monday that details were still being worked out, including how many days Biden would devote to prep. They said exactly where he’d be doing it, at Camp David or elsewhere, had not been finalized.

Camp David, located in the Catoctin Mountains northwest of Washington, is no stranger to presidents prepping for the debate stage. Presidents Jimmy Carter and Ronald Reagan went there to ready themselves for debates during their reelection campaigns, as did George H.W. Bush before a debate in 1992.

President Barack Obama visited Camp David before his final debate with Republican Mitt Romney in 2012. Biden himself used the presidential retreat to prepare for his State of the Union address in February.

In a memo released to coincide with the one-month mark prior to the debate, Jen O’Malley Dillon, chair of Biden’s reelection campaign, wrote that the president will aim to go on the offensive and push Trump to talk about how his three appointees to the Supreme Court helped overturn Roe v. Wade, and how he could further undermine abortion rights in a second term.

Biden also wants Trump to discuss his “attacks” on U.S. democracy and promotion of political violence and an economic agenda that Biden’s team says will furnish the rich with tax cuts while imperiling funding for Social Security, O’Malley Dillon wrote.

Trump, meanwhile, has been eager to debate Biden, challenging him to a faceoff “anytime, anyplace.”

At one point Trump suggested that the president join him for a debate outside the lower Manhattan courthouse where the presumptive Republican nominee was on trial for 34 felony counts in a case involving hush money payment to a porn actor. Trump’s campaign set up an empty lectern at several of his rallies to underscore the message.

While Trump participated in more traditional debate prep in previous races — with his former friend-turned-critic Chris Christie playing the role of Hillary Clinton in 2016 — his team insists that this time around he will be eschewing the kind of formal preparation expected from Biden.

“President Trump takes on numerous tough interviews every single week and delivers lengthy rally speeches while standing, demonstrating elite stamina,” said Trump senior adviser Jason Miller.

Local News | Cargo ship Dali readying for trip to Virginia, will be assisted by 6 vessels

The 984-foot, 124,000-ton ship first left the Port of Baltimore in the early hours of March 26, headed for Sri Lanka, but lost power almost immediately and crashed into a support pier of the Francis Scott Key Bridge. It decimated the structure, knocking over 2,500 feet of bridge into the Patapsco River, killing six construction workers and blocking Baltimore’s shipping channel for over two months.

The ship itself, with its crumpled bow, was stuck in the waterway for 55 days before being towed last month to the port. Since then, crews have worked to ready the vessel for a voyage to Norfolk, Virginia. It is still unknown when the ship will depart, but it could be early next week, Coast Guard Cmdr. Baxter Smoak told The Baltimore Sun on Thursday.

The Dali has one specific need to be settled before it departs. While most ships can head to a port and simply drop anchor near their destination if they need to wait for a berth, the Dali cannot. It does not have either of its two anchors, so it needs to leave Baltimore and go directly to a berth.

“They can’t go down and anchor off Cape Henry and wait because they don’t have anchors, right?” Smoak said. “So the movement has to be highly choreographed. They gotta go straight from one terminal to the next.”

One of the Dali’s anchors was “completely crushed” during the bridge collapse, while the other was cut free during the salvage, Smoak said.

Without anchors and still quite damaged, the Dali will be carefully escorted to Norfolk. It will sail under its own power, but four tugboats will assist it the entire way. A Coast Guard cutter will also form part of the convoy and enforce a “moving safety zone.”  Another workboat — from the salvor Resolve Marine — will also escort. In total, seven vessels, including the Dali, will make the 16- to 20-hour trip.

“It’s another set of eyes to ensure that nothing falls off of the vessel,” Smoak said of the salvor’s boat. “If something were to fall off the vessel, there’s someone there to immediately respond, mark it and recover it.”

The Dali’s bow has been a mangled mess of crushed cargo containers and bridge pieces since the collapse. While much has been removed, some will remain on the ship during its transit. Crews have secured any loose debris, Smoak added.

“Anything that was overhanging will be removed before their departure,” he said, “but there’s still going to be wreckage on the bow of the vessel.”

After being patched up in Norfolk, the Dali will sail to another, still-undetermined shipyard for more extensive repairs, said Darrell Wilson, a spokesperson for the ship’s owner, Grace Ocean Private Ltd.

The Dali’s Chesapeake Bay transit comes after crews used explosive devices to cut up a piece of bridge that sat atop the bow. That enabled the ship to be refloated in May and relocated to the Seagirt Marine Terminal.

Removing the Dali from the shipping channel near Fort McHenry was a key step to freeing the waterway and last week, the 700-foot wide, 50-foot deep channel was entirely reopened . Commerce into the Port of Baltimore has not returned to precollapse levels, but authorities hope it will this year.

In the meantime, the Maryland Transportation Authority is making plans to identify a builder for the replacement Key Bridge. The span, which is projected to cost $1.7 billion, is expected to open by October 2028.
