Jackie Clark’s new stage ‘I’m literally in my prime’

Profile picture of Now to Love

Jackie Clarke is no stranger to the spotlight, wowing Kiwi crowds for more than three decades with her maverick entertainment style. But with age , she’s found fewer opportunities, so the 57-year-old diva decided to create her own.

“I love my wrinkles!” she declares. “They’re an expression of the life and love I’ve experienced, and my humanity. So when the doors started closing on me, I just built my own house and opened my own doors, making my own opportunities.”

Her determination to stay on the stage is hardly surprising, given she joined her first band, Marching Orders, at the age of 16, stole hearts with her rock group The Lady Killers, then spent the last three decades pursuing various other roles, including as a judge for New Zealand Idol and Saturday Live co-host.

“You have to really want to make it in this business in New Zealand because it’s such a small country and it’s hard to keep going. I’m proud of the fact I’m still here. I refer to myself as a hardy perennial,” she laughs.

Her latest adventure includes touring a new show, Jackie Goes Prima Diva , around the small stages of New Zealand. She’ll be showcasing exciting renditions of songs from iconic female artists, including Barbra Streisand, Judy Garland, Kate Bush and Lady Gaga, which she’s avoided for most of her life because “they’re too precious and too fabulous”.

“I learned you can’t take for granted the gift of performing in front of people,” she says of her change of heart. “Coming out of Covid, I said, ‘I’m going to shout these divas from the rooftops’ because I’ve never had the guts to do it before. Now, I’m not going to let anything stop me doing exactly what I want to do.”

Her husband of 30 years, film director Grant Lahood, 61, will also accompany her on tour.

“It’s a real first in our relationship!” she explains. “My tour schedule is going to be really harrowing, so Grant offered to come and help cook meals, put up lights and look after me. It’s going to be great.”

The couple live in Auckland with their sons Stan, 23, and Ernie, 20, who Jackie is thrilled share her passion for music.

“They’re both really into it,” she reveals. “Stan sings and drums, but he hasn’t made the leap to doing it in front of people yet. My fingers are crossed he will, but I’m keeping out of it.

Jackie will be joined by husband Grant on tour.

“I think they see my job as something similar to a plumber or an accountant. It’s nothing out of the ordinary for them because it’s what I’ve always done. They love saying ‘Mum, shhhh!’ because I’m always singing around the house,” she says, adding that her tour might bring Stan and Ernie some peace for a while.

“My favourite thing to do after wrapping up a busy work period is to just let my voice rest and not speak much for a couple of days,” the glamorous singer tells. “But I’ll go to a really big mall and just wander around, and treat myself to some fabulous little thing, and then sit and have a nice lunch on my own. There’s nothing I love more than shopping.

“Although I do absolutely love The Beths and the uniqueness of Elizabeth Stokes’ voice,” she says of the Kiwi rock band. “I’ve taken one of her songs and I’m performing it in a more classic ballad style in Prima Diva because I just love the song writing. I find her so inspiring.”

And the party doesn’t end with her tour. Jackie will also perform with The Lady Killers , alongside her good friends Tina Cross, 64, and Suzanne Lynch, 72, in the Chatham Islands in January.

“I’ll still be performing on stage in my 90s if I have my way!” she laughs. “People nowadays want to put you out to pasture once you turn 30, but I can honestly say I feel like I’m just getting the hang of this. I think it’s an act of political defiance to keep performing at my age, but I’m literally in my prime. There’s no stopping me!”

Ambient Light

Jackie Clarke, Twyford NZ, 2022

Jackie Clarke

Jackie Clarke

21st october 2022 twyford community hall, twyford, new zealand..

Review by Rob Harbers , photography by Andrew Caldwell .

Day eight of the Festival saw me making the pilgrimage (all of 10 minutes from home!) to the settlement of Twyford, where in conjunction with the Small Hall Sessions, Jackie Clarke presented her “Jackie Goes Prima Diva” show, and stunned an adoring crowd with her powerful voice.

This was night three of a five night run, and it’s my job over the next few hundred words to convince you that you need to catch one of the remaining ones if you can!

Inspired by a period of reverie, resulting in an epiphany (described by Jackie as “like an orgasm, except cerebral”) during the first period of the isolation that dares not speak its name, this is a collection of the songs that have inspired her over her life. It was when these were all gathered together that she realised that they were (almost) all the work of female artists, which tells a story of itself. Having arrived at this list of material, she then set about putting together a show comprised of it, which brings us up to where we are now.

The first thing that must be said is: what a set of fucking pipes the lady’s got! Having only tangentially encountered her during her career, I had no idea of the power and range of her voice, and was blown away by it, as it seems many others present also were – she’s absolutely fucking amazing!

Taking the audience through a set drawn from many of the great female voices of the last 90 or so years, Jackie held them in the palm of her hand, while also having time for some affectionate banter with various members and crew. Her accompanist on this journey of sound is Stephen Small, who alongside his membership in Hello Sailor, also plays with both the London Symphony and Czech National Orchestras – so no mere novice himself!

Starting with the great Nina Simone’s “Feeling Good” and proceeding through songs originally sung by divas such as Ethel Merman, Peggy Lee (twice!), Judy Garland, Alberta Hunter, Shirley Bassey, Barbra Streisand, Kate Bush, Elizabeth Stokes, and many more, this was a show that pulled out all the stops, Jackie holding nothing back in her renditions of such a distinguished catalogue. This self-styled “Pacifica Rita Hayworth, with a touch of Spotlight” really knows how to entertain (and did I mention she can really sing?), and while reflecting that the hall could equally have been Carnegie or Royal Albert, but was in fact the Twyford Community! But she would do either of those stages proud also.

I’m not going to bore you with a song-by-song rundown of the show, you can see that in the setlist below. Suffice it to say that after the song announced as being the last one (the announcement receiving the correct response, in the form of a collective disappointed “Oh”), the ironically titled, in light of all that’d gone before, “Is That All There Is?”, the encore consisted of the night’s only song not originally sung by a female, in the form of “Bohemian Rhapsody”! Yep, BoRap itself! What chutzpah, to take on such a piece! What talent, to pull it off!!

Simply fucking amazing, leaving the crowd with a warm glow. An absolute triumph for both Small Halls and the Festival, at this near-halfway point an early favourite for the title of “Best In Festival”. Don’t waste any more time, don’t give any more excuses, get a ticket and prepare to be astounded!

This play centres around Angela, whose husband has run off with a younger woman, and whose teenage daughter moves out to live with a drummer in a band. This leaves Angela to cope with her dog, her disapproving Irish mother, and all the aftermath of middle-aged loneliness.

Many diverse characters feature off-stage, supplying not always helpful advice, including Angela’s ex-husband, numerous helplines, lawyers and doctors, and even shop assistants.

Angela will be brilliantly played by the marvellous, legendary Jackie Clarke. Don’t miss this gem of a play.

Clarke is a gem, an absolute natural on stage with her comic timing, asides and most of all, her outstanding voice - Patrick Shepherd – Christchurch Symphony – Fresh Sounds review – Christchurch Star

This self-styled “Pacifica Rita Hayworth, with a touch of Spotlight” really knows how to entertain (and did I mention she can really sing?)….the hall could have been Carnegie or Royal Albert, but was in fact the Twyford Community (Hall)! She would do either of those stages proud also - Rob Harbers, Ambient Light Blog review, Hawkes Bay Festival 2022

Homegrown chanteuse Jackie Clarke turns her powerhouse vocals, wicked humour and maverick entertainment style to interpret the songs of the 20th and 21st Centuries most legendary divas.

Ms Clarke pays homage to Judy Garland, Shirley Bassey, Peggy Lee, Barbra Streisand and more! From Alberta Hunter to Dolly Parton, from Kate Bush to Lady Gaga, Jackie lets her diva flag fly, while playfully interacting with the audience with trademark witty panache.

Accompanied by her trusty sidekick Maestro on piano, expect iconic songs performed with tender soul and gleeful virtuosity.

In 2018 Jackie Clarke was awarded an MNZM for services to entertainment; 40 years treading the boards in theatre, (Mamma Mia, Shirley Valentine) music (When The Cat’s Been Spayed, The Lady Killers) and T.V. (NZ Idol).

Don’t miss this rollicking show of bravura song styling, dazzling frockage, pin-drop moments and plenty of laughs from a NZ dairy-fed Diva with her feet on the ground and her head amongst the stars.

ABOUT ICE SPICE With a sugar rush of playful sensuality and unbothered cool, Ice Spice has established herself as the music world’s latest shapeshifting superstar. Since emerging with “Munch (Feelin’ U),” in the fall of 2022, she has reconfigured the raucous energy of the Bronx to make anthems for baddies and their baddie friends—sexy theme songs that ring off in the club or an NY deli, places Ice Spice has no problem turning into her own personal dancefloor. Powered by singles like “In Ha Mood” and “Princess Diana,” as well as the deluxe edition of her Like..? EP, she’s collected more than 2.5 billion streams, multiple top 5 Hot 100 singles, and four Grammy nominations, including nods for Best New Artist, Best Rap Song, Best Pop Duo/Group Performance, and Best Song Written for Visual Media. More symbolically, she’s become an emblem of the new Big Apple, a fact that isn’t lost on the media.

Writing for The New York Times, Maya Salam listed Ice Spice as the breakout pop artist of 2023, citing her “cool, confident, raw” signature sound. Meanwhile, Variety’ listed Like..? as her fourth favorite project of last year, praising her “sharpshooter flow” and her all-around versatility on the project. For their part, Billboard named Ice Spice 2023’s Rookie of the Year. It’s all part of a calculated level up at the intersection of planning, distinctive style and unfailing belief. As Rolling Stone put it, “it’s already tough to imagine we ever lived in a world without her.”

Ice Spice’s breakout really began with “Munch (Feelin’ U),” a track that quickly became a playgirl’s dancefloor bat signal. The song earned Ice Spice her first RIAA-certified Gold plaque before amassing nearly 120 million Spotify streams. After initially releasing the song and its follow-up, “Bikini Bottom,” she signed a deal with Capitol Records and 10k Projects. From there, she fortified her buzz with “In Ha Mood” and the Lil Tjay-assisted “Gangsta Boo.” Both tracks landed on her debut EP, Like..?, a critically acclaimed project that crystallized her star status.

The hits have only continued to pile up. In February 2023, Ice Spice appeared on “Boy’s a Liar Pt. 2,” a PinkPantheress single that’s equal parts infectious and emotionally vulnerable. That March, it peaked at No. 3 on the Billboard Hot 100. Then came the “Princess Diana” remix with her idol Nicki Minaj. All of that was before she guested on Taylor Swift’s 2023 single, “Karma,” which hit No. 2 on the Hot 100. Ice Spice parlayed that popularity surge into 12 performances as Doja Cat’s opening act for The Scarlet Tour. It was her first time performing in arenas, which has set her up for even bigger stages, like Coachella, which she’ll hit in April 2024.

Her musical impact has only made her a ubiquitous cultural force. Last year, she appeared as the star of Kim Kardashian’s SKIMS campaign, with her fly everygirl persona making her a perfect fit for an emerging fashion powerhouse. That summer, she teamed up with Nicki Minaj again for “Barbie World,” a single that belonged to the Barbie soundtrack. A flurry of effervescent pop, the track peaked at No. 7 on the Hot 100 chart. She also appeared alongside Ben Affleck for a Dunkin’ commercial introducing her MUNCHKIN Drink, a frozen treat named after her dedicated fan base. Malleable enough to oscillate among brands, genres, and fans, it’s no surprise that Google announced Ice Spice as the second-most searched musician of 2023. Her level-up isn’t stopping anytime soon. With her debut album on the way, Ice Spice plans to continue to make varied soundscapes her playground.

Gagarin cup (khl) finals:  atlant moscow oblast vs. salavat yulaev ufa.

Much like the Elitserien Finals, we have a bit of an offense vs. defense match-up in this league Final.  While Ufa let their star top line of Alexander Radulov, Patrick Thoresen and Igor Grigorenko loose on the KHL's Western Conference, Mytischi played a more conservative style, relying on veterans such as former NHLers Jan Bulis, Oleg Petrov, and Jaroslav Obsut.  Just reaching the Finals is a testament to Atlant's disciplined style of play, as they had to knock off much more high profile teams from Yaroslavl and St. Petersburg to do so.  But while they did finish 8th in the league in points, they haven't seen the likes of Ufa, who finished 2nd.

This series will be a challenge for the underdog, because unlike some of the other KHL teams, Ufa's top players are generally younger and in their prime.  Only Proshkin amongst regular blueliners is over 30, with the work being shared by Kirill Koltsov (28), Andrei Kuteikin (26), Miroslav Blatak (28), Maxim Kondratiev (28) and Dmitri Kalinin (30).  Oleg Tverdovsky hasn't played a lot in the playoffs to date.  Up front, while led by a fairly young top line (24-27), Ufa does have a lot of veterans in support roles:  Vyacheslav Kozlov , Viktor Kozlov , Vladimir Antipov, Sergei Zinovyev and Petr Schastlivy are all over 30.  In fact, the names of all their forwards are familiar to international and NHL fans:  Robert Nilsson , Alexander Svitov, Oleg Saprykin and Jakub Klepis round out the group, all former NHL players.

For Atlant, their veteran roster, with only one of their top six D under the age of 30 (and no top forwards under 30, either), this might be their one shot at a championship.  The team has never won either a Russian Superleague title or the Gagarin Cup, and for players like former NHLer Oleg Petrov, this is probably the last shot at the KHL's top prize.  The team got three extra days rest by winning their Conference Final in six games, and they probably needed to use it.  Atlant does have younger regulars on their roster, but they generally only play a few shifts per game, if that.

The low event style of game for Atlant probably suits them well, but I don't know how they can manage to keep up against Ufa's speed, skill, and depth.  There is no advantage to be seen in goal, with Erik Ersberg and Konstantin Barulin posting almost identical numbers, and even in terms of recent playoff experience Ufa has them beat.  Luckily for Atlant, Ufa isn't that far away from the Moscow region, so travel shouldn't play a major role.

I'm predicting that Ufa, winners of the last Superleague title back in 2008, will become the second team to win the Gagarin Cup, and will prevail in five games.  They have a seriously well built team that would honestly compete in the NHL.  They represent the potential of the league, while Atlant represents closer to the reality, as a team full of players who played themselves out of the NHL.

  • Atlant @ Ufa, Friday Apr 8 (3:00 PM CET/10:00 PM EST)
  • Atlant @ Ufa, Sunday Apr 10 (1:00 PM CET/8:00 AM EST)
  • Ufa @ Atlant, Tuesday Apr 12 (5:30 PM CET/12:30 PM EST)
  • Ufa @ Atlant, Thursday Apr 14 (5:30 PM CET/12:30 PM EST)

Games 5-7 are as yet unscheduled, but every second day is the KHL standard, so expect Game 5 to be on Saturday, like an early start.

The Unique Burial of a Child of Early Scythian Time at the Cemetery of Saryg-Bulun (Tuva)

<< Previous page

Pages:  379-406

In 1988, the Tuvan Archaeological Expedition (led by M. E. Kilunovskaya and V. A. Semenov) discovered a unique burial of the early Iron Age at Saryg-Bulun in Central Tuva. There are two burial mounds of the Aldy-Bel culture dated by 7th century BC. Within the barrows, which adjoined one another, forming a figure-of-eight, there were discovered 7 burials, from which a representative collection of artifacts was recovered. Burial 5 was the most unique, it was found in a coffin made of a larch trunk, with a tightly closed lid. Due to the preservative properties of larch and lack of air access, the coffin contained a well-preserved mummy of a child with an accompanying set of grave goods. The interred individual retained the skin on his face and had a leather headdress painted with red pigment and a coat, sewn from jerboa fur. The coat was belted with a leather belt with bronze ornaments and buckles. Besides that, a leather quiver with arrows with the shafts decorated with painted ornaments, fully preserved battle pick and a bow were buried in the coffin. Unexpectedly, the full-genomic analysis, showed that the individual was female. This fact opens a new aspect in the study of the social history of the Scythian society and perhaps brings us back to the myth of the Amazons, discussed by Herodotus. Of course, this discovery is unique in its preservation for the Scythian culture of Tuva and requires careful study and conservation.

Savvino-storozhevsky monastery and museum.

Savvino-Storozhevsky Monastery and Museum

Zvenigorod's most famous sight is the Savvino-Storozhevsky Monastery, which was founded in 1398 by the monk Savva from the Troitse-Sergieva Lavra, at the invitation and with the support of Prince Yury Dmitrievich of Zvenigorod. Savva was later canonised as St Sabbas (Savva) of Storozhev. The monastery late flourished under the reign of Tsar Alexis, who chose the monastery as his family church and often went on pilgrimage there and made lots of donations to it. Most of the monastery’s buildings date from this time. The monastery is heavily fortified with thick walls and six towers, the most impressive of which is the Krasny Tower which also serves as the eastern entrance. The monastery was closed in 1918 and only reopened in 1995. In 1998 Patriarch Alexius II took part in a service to return the relics of St Sabbas to the monastery. Today the monastery has the status of a stauropegic monastery, which is second in status to a lavra. In addition to being a working monastery, it also holds the Zvenigorod Historical, Architectural and Art Museum.

Belfry and Neighbouring Churches

jackie clarke tour dates

Located near the main entrance is the monastery's belfry which is perhaps the calling card of the monastery due to its uniqueness. It was built in the 1650s and the St Sergius of Radonezh’s Church was opened on the middle tier in the mid-17th century, although it was originally dedicated to the Trinity. The belfry's 35-tonne Great Bladgovestny Bell fell in 1941 and was only restored and returned in 2003. Attached to the belfry is a large refectory and the Transfiguration Church, both of which were built on the orders of Tsar Alexis in the 1650s.

To the left of the belfry is another, smaller, refectory which is attached to the Trinity Gate-Church, which was also constructed in the 1650s on the orders of Tsar Alexis who made it his own family church. The church is elaborately decorated with colourful trims and underneath the archway is a beautiful 19th century fresco.

Nativity of Virgin Mary Cathedral

jackie clarke tour dates

The Nativity of Virgin Mary Cathedral is the oldest building in the monastery and among the oldest buildings in the Moscow Region. It was built between 1404 and 1405 during the lifetime of St Sabbas and using the funds of Prince Yury of Zvenigorod. The white-stone cathedral is a standard four-pillar design with a single golden dome. After the death of St Sabbas he was interred in the cathedral and a new altar dedicated to him was added.

Under the reign of Tsar Alexis the cathedral was decorated with frescoes by Stepan Ryazanets, some of which remain today. Tsar Alexis also presented the cathedral with a five-tier iconostasis, the top row of icons have been preserved.

Tsaritsa's Chambers

jackie clarke tour dates

The Nativity of Virgin Mary Cathedral is located between the Tsaritsa's Chambers of the left and the Palace of Tsar Alexis on the right. The Tsaritsa's Chambers were built in the mid-17th century for the wife of Tsar Alexey - Tsaritsa Maria Ilinichna Miloskavskaya. The design of the building is influenced by the ancient Russian architectural style. Is prettier than the Tsar's chambers opposite, being red in colour with elaborately decorated window frames and entrance.

jackie clarke tour dates

At present the Tsaritsa's Chambers houses the Zvenigorod Historical, Architectural and Art Museum. Among its displays is an accurate recreation of the interior of a noble lady's chambers including furniture, decorations and a decorated tiled oven, and an exhibition on the history of Zvenigorod and the monastery.

Palace of Tsar Alexis

jackie clarke tour dates

The Palace of Tsar Alexis was built in the 1650s and is now one of the best surviving examples of non-religious architecture of that era. It was built especially for Tsar Alexis who often visited the monastery on religious pilgrimages. Its most striking feature is its pretty row of nine chimney spouts which resemble towers.
