Around-the-World Cruises: Everything Travelers Need to Know About These Epic Voyages

AroundtheWorld Cruises Everything Travelers Need to Know About These Epic Voyages

An around-the-world cruise is often thought of as the pinnacle of a  sailing vacation . Some cruisers treat these multi-month journeys as once-in-a-lifetime trips; others are frequent guests, a world cruise but one piece of their annual travel plans. There are also the enduring tales of older travelers who elect for extended world voyages as an unconventional retirement plan . (Though as onboard WiFi becomes more reliable, it's now possible to work remote from many cruise ships, as well.)

Whatever the reason, the allure of this mode of travel is strong. Why not unpack once, enjoying fairy godmother-like service, exemplary amenities, and always-changing views for months on end? Plenty of cruisers with time and money on their hands do exactly that, choosing an extended at-sea lifestyle for at least a portion of the year. Around-the-world cruises often run from early January through March or April, although new off-season itineraries are being introduced.

If an epic voyage across multiple oceans and continents fits into your future, be prepared to plan the trip far in advance. World cruises have a strong following among cruisers—many of the sailings can sell out up to a year before departure. Travelers can also book shorter “segments” joining the ship for only a portion of the journey, but cruise lines often add significant value-adds to those booking the entire voyage—everything from free business class airfare to other exclusives like special parties and invite-only shore excursions.

Here's everything travelers need to know about taking an around-the-world cruise, including tricks from veteran world cruisers, booking tips, and some of the best itineraries in 2025 and beyond.

This article has been updated with new information since its original publish date.

Booking tips for around-the-world cruises

How much is a cruise to go around the world.

World cruises, which may not actually circumnavigate the globe entirely, but are generally in a category that covers at least three continents and lasts from 90 to 150 days, generally start around $140 per passenger per night based on double occupancy. All in all, the cost of 100-plus day world cruise can range from $16,000 to over $800,000 per person, depending on the line and cabin type.

Is an around the world cruise worth it?

That’s certainly subjective, but travelers already accustomed to cruising—who appreciate the amenities of a ship and the lifestyle of a new port to view through the window every few days—will likely consider world cruises good value.

How much does a 180-day cruise around the world cost?

The longest world voyages we found generally lasted up to 140 to 150 days at their upper limits, although Oceania Cruises world cruises can be 180 days or more, starting at $48,799 per passenger.

Advice from frequent world cruisers

Roger Foenander and his partner David Mutton—loyalists to Viking Cruises —note the lack of pressure to see and do things within a tight timeframe on longer journeys, which provides plenty of freedom to relax. That might mean attending onboard enrichment lectures, spending the afternoon playing cards with fellow passengers, or dipping into the onboard spa and sauna before cocktail hour.

Linda Wiseman, who has traveled with Cunard , suggests new faces can help get ahead of any monotony: “In the dining room, we tell the maître d’ not to seat us with another couple who is sailing the whole thing—that way, our seat mates switch every few weeks, and we can meet different people.”

New Orleans-based philanthropist and veteran world cruiser Phyllis Taylor observes that these sailings are a class set apart, without the frenzied pace of shorter itineraries: “The difference between a short cruise and a  world cruise  is night and day, storm and calm, fleeting thought and thoughtfulness. I enter the bar in the evening, in no time my favorite song is being played, my favorite drinks sit before me. I go to dinner and my favorite table is waiting for me, and my waiter has already served the iced water with lemon just as I like it."

But the real value of a world cruise, Taylor says, is the chance to fully immerse in and savor the experience: “With an extended cruise you absorb the lifestyle of life at sea; with the great advantage of having a crew and staff that treats you like royalty.”

The best around-the-world cruise itineraries

Silversea Silver Cloud

You can book world cruises in their entirety or join one leg of the journey for a shorter voyage.

Silversea’s 136-day sailing onboard their newest ship, Silver Dawn , will embark in Tokyo in January 2025. Called Controtempo , the cruise will sail in the opposite direction and season of many world cruises, taking in Japan and China in January before heading to Southeast Asia, Sri Lanka, the Maldives , and Seychelles in February. The ship will spend the spring making its way up Africa’s Atlantic Coast—arriving in the Baltic Sea before cruising to Iceland and Greenland (an uncommon call for World Cruises), then tracing Newfoundland and New England to New York.

Four Major International Airlines Just Joined TSA PreCheck

Fares start at $77,560 “Port-to-Port” or $79,060 “Door-to-Door,” which includes business class airfare and transfers—including pickups and drop-offs in the traveler’s home city.

Princess Cruises

Most world cruises departing from North America head to sea in January, but in 2026 Princess Cruises will be offering 114-day World Cruises during the northern summer. Departing in early May from Auckland, New Zealand; or Sydney or Brisbane, Australia (mid-autumn in the Southern Hemisphere), the sailings are timed to arrive in Western and Northern Europe during the peak of summer, promising endless sunny days.

The sailing also has a number of long stretches of sea days for cruisers who like time to unwind and enjoy the amenities of the ship, Crown Princess . Some of the longer ocean crossings, like Brisbane to Bali and Colombo, Sri Lanka to Aqaba, Jordan will take a week or longer, while three other ocean crossings are at least four days.

Inside cabins start at $15,588 per passenger or from $22,248 for Princess Plus fares, which includes beverages, WiFi, and onboard gratuities.

Crystal’s land partnerships with parent company Abercrombie & Kent are front and center during their 2025 World Cruise , a 123-night sailing departing from Fort Lauderdale on January 7 onboard the Crystal Serenity —fresh off a complete refurbishment that reduced the total number of cabins, which now all offer butler service in every room or suite category.

With port calls in South America, Africa, India, the Middle East, and Europe, Crystal will offer guests a number of overland packages in partnership with Abercrombie & Kent—think multi-night side trips to the Galápagos Islands , Machu Picchu, the Serengeti, Taj Mahal, or Karnak Temple.

Guests booking Crystal's full World Cruise will have included Business Class airfare, $1,500 shipboard credit, luggage valet, and airport transfers. Fares start at $66,500 per passenger based on double occupancy in an Ocean View Deluxe stateroom.

Regent Seven Seas

Regent Seven Seas Cruises has already opened their 2027 world cruise for booking—and they have a tendency to sell out quickly. It will be the first year a larger Explorer Class ship, the Seven Seas Splendor , will undertake the world voyage, calling at 71 ports en route from Miami to New York in January 2027.

The routing will take the ship from the Caribbean to the Pacific coast of Mexico via the Panama Canal, Hawaii, several ports in French Polynesia (calling twice at both Moorea and Bora Bora), Australia, Southeast Asia, India, the Persian Gulf, the Eastern and Western Mediterranean, and Bermuda before arriving in New York.

Early bookers will get a long list of added amenities, including first class airfare, a pre-cruise gala in Miami, exclusive shoreside experiences in Panama City, Colombo, and Málaga , unlimited shore excursions, unlimited beverages, gratuities, transfers, door-to-door luggage service, and unlimited laundry, dry cleaning, and pressing. Fares start at $91,449 per passenger and go up to $839,999 per passenger for the ship’s most luxurious suite.

Oceania Cruises

Many world cruises depart in January and sail in the 100- to 140-day range, mostly wrapping up by April or May. Oceania’s 180-day world cruises last until midsummer, and are often “true” around-the-world sailings, ending in the same port they first embarked from.

Oceania’s 2025 Global Horizons sailing lasts a whopping 196 days onboard Insignia , roundtrip from Miami. The sailing includes several destinations in the Eastern Caribbean, and—extraordinary for a world voyage—a week of scenic cruising along the Amazon River . The voyage continues in South America before crossing the Atlantic to the remote islands of Tristan de Cunha, a British Overseas Territory, before making landfall again in Namibia , tracing the African coast through South Africa, Mozambique, and the French department of Mayotte (another rare stop for a cruise), island-hopping in the Indian Ocean before calling in India.

The sailing covers a lot of ground in Asia—Thailand, Malaysia, Vietnam, Singapore, China, Japan, the Philippines, Brunei, and Indonesia—before cruising the west and south coasts of Australia, New Zealand, New Caledonia, Vanuatu, Fiji, French Polynesia, and Hawaii. Crossing the Pacific to San Diego the ship then hops down the coasts of Mexico and Central America through the Panama Canal before returning to Miami in mid-July.

Oceania’s 2026 Around the World in 180 Days sailing is also roundtrip from Miami. Sailing westbound, the itinerary covers the east and west coasts of South America, the South Pacific, Australia, Southeast Asia, and much of the Middle East before transiting the Mediterranean to spend significant time in northwestern Europe and the Baltic Sea before crossing the far north Atlantic via Iceland and Canada before returning to Miami.

Starting fares for each of the world voyages currently range from $48,799 to to $57,999, including a number of value-adds like roundtrip airfare and airport transfers, plus a number of added onboard amenities.

After the past couple of years stuck at home, most people are more than ready to jump back into travel—ideally visiting as many places as possible, as soon as possible. Enter Royal Caribbean International. The company just unveiled its Ultimate World Cruise , an epic 274-night sailing that visits all seven continents, including over 150 destinations in 65 countries. It sounds like the perfect way to cross off half your bucket list in one fell swoop.

The cruise will depart from Miami on Dec. 10, 2023, and last until Sept. 10, 2024. That should give you plenty of time to start pinching those pennies—tickets start at $61,000 for an interior stateroom and go up to $112,000 for a junior suite. The price covers business class airfare and accommodations at a five-star hotel before setting sail.

You also have the option to tag along for just one of the journey's four legs, each of which explores a different part of the world: Antarctica and the Americas, Asia and the Pacific, the Middle East and the Mediterranean, and Europe's Capitals of Culture. As for the ports of call, you can plan on visiting pretty much every famous tourist attraction on the planet. We're talking the Great Barrier Reef, Pyramids of Giza, Great Wall of China, Taj Mahal, Machu Picchu, and Iceland's Blue Lagoon—and that's just the tip of the iceberg.

Oh yeah, you'll visit some icebergs, too.

"This is the world cruise of world cruises," said Michael Bayley, president and CEO of Royal Caribbean International. "To travelers asking themselves where they should go next, we say everywhere."

The all-encompassing itinerary is the main draw here, but guests should expect to have a pretty great time on the actual ship itself, Serenade of the Seas. According to the ship's website , onboard amenities include a mini-golf course, rock climbing wall, full-service spa, pool with a retractable glass roof, and a theater hosting everything from Broadway shows to stand-up comics. Guests can choose from nearly 20 restaurants and bars, then enjoy the scenery from the ship's panoramic, multi-story windows.

Bookings for the full Ultimate World Cruise can be made by phone now. The only thing left to do is pray you win the lottery in the next 26 months.

What our travelers say about their multi-country tours

Tips for traveling on multi-country trips.

Our multi-country tours cover almost every corner of the globe, so choosing the perfect trip might seem like a daunting task. That's why our expert Tour Consultants are here to help you find your dream tour.

A multi-destination trip can mean anything from taking a tour of U.S. and Canadian National Parks to exploring festive Christmas markets in Europe to tasting the flavors of South America —the adventure is really up to you!

One of the biggest benefits of a multi-destination vacation is that you’ll visit several countries in one trip. Experiencing different cultures, cuisines, and languages is all part of multiple country travel—and when you choose one of our multi-country trips, you can focus on these new experiences without worrying about the logistics.

Our multiple destination vacation packages include transportation between countries, which could mean flights, train rides, or even overnight cruises! We’ll also work with you to make sure your passport and any necessary visas are all set before you depart, so you don’t have to navigate any requirements on your own. Multiple country travel is all about getting the most out of your journey, and we’re here to help you do just that.

Whether it’s a multi-city vacation or a trip that takes you across a continent, the best packing advice is always “bring layers and pack light.” One checked suitcase and a carry-on bag is a good rule of thumb, especially on a multi-destination trip where you can expect to be moving from place to place. You’ll also want comfortable walking shoes, and rain or winter-weather gear depending on your destination.

With any of our tours, including our multi-city vacation packages, you’ll receive more detailed information about your destinations before you depart. That way, you can perfectly plan for whatever adventure lies ahead.

How to Sail Around the World on a Luxury Cruise

Last updated: March 9th, 2022

Celebrity Solstice sailing in Alaska

  • Find a Cruise

Sailing around the world might seem like an impossible dream, but it’s actually easier than you might think. With Celebrity Cruises, you can travel to every continent in luxury while enjoying the comfort of our five-star service and entertainment along the way.

If you’re interested in achieving this special travel milestone, here are all the ways you can sail on a luxury cruise around the world.

North America

Beautiful landscape of Juneau, Alaska

Juneau, Alaska

Start your journey with a United States cruise to the Pacific Northwest, sail along the coast of New England and Canada, visit Charleston on a Bermuda cruise, or cruise from Florida to the Caribbean.

Some of our most popular North American cruises are the ones that explore the Last Frontier of America: Alaska. Celebrity Cruises offers convenient sailings that depart from Seattle, Washington; Vancouver, British Columbia; and Seward, Alaska. On an Alaska cruise , see breathtaking natural wonders such as Hubbard Glacier or Dawes Glacier and visit lively ports of call like Juneau, Ketchikan, and Icy Strait Point.

The Caribbean

Clear blue waters and white sand beach in Aruba

If you want to escape to somewhere more exotic (and perhaps warmer), our Caribbean cruises stop in multiple island destinations.

Visit the white-sand beaches of Cozumel and the quirky town of Key West on a Western Caribbean cruise. In the Southern Caribbean, visit the stunning ABC islands of Aruba, Bonaire, and Curacao. See the wondrous pitons of St. Lucia or take a dip in Magens Bay in St. Thomas on an Eastern Caribbean cruise.

South America

South America cruises are a great way to explore the magic of the Southern Hemisphere. Sail along the southern tip of the continent on a cruise to Chile, Argentina, and Uruguay, or visit countries like Peru and Brazil.

Blue-footed boobies on rocks

Blue-footed boobies in Galapagos

If you’re going on a luxury cruise around the world, one of the best places to visit is the Galapagos, which are full of exotic wildlife and dreamlike natural wonders. On your Galapagos cruise , you’ll sail around the islands with an onboard naturalist who will teach you about the sea lions, giant tortoises, marine lizards, and fascinating birds you’ll spot along the way.

Sagrada Familia in Spain reflecting on waters

Sagrada Familia in Barcelona, Spain

No cruise around the world is complete without a stop in the fascinating continent of Europe. On an unforgettable cruise vacation to the Mediterranean , enjoy the food, wine, and culture at popular cities and seaside villages in Italy, Spain, France, and Greece.

For something a little different, head farther north and sail around the Baltic Sea to the countries of Scandinavia and the northern shores of Germany, Belgium, and Russia. Explore the United Kingdom and stop in historic ports of call throughout England, Scotland, and Ireland.

With so many choices, you may find yourself wanting to sail on several European cruises before tackling the next continent on your list.

Sensoji Temple in Japan during spring

Sensoji Temple in Tokyo, Japan

If you’ve always dreamed of going to Asia to walk along the Great Wall of China, explore the islands of Southeast Asia, or see the wonders of India, Celebrity Cruises has you covered with a variety of multi-country cruise itineraries.

Sail on a luxury cruise around Asia and experience the ease of visiting multiple cities and countries all in one vacation. Sign up for guided tour excursions and soak in the culture and history of destinations in Japan, Vietnam, Malaysia, the Philippines, India, and more.

Paradise Bay, Antarctica

Journey to the southernmost continent on an unforgettable cruise vacation. Some of the best places to cruise to in Antarctica include Elephant Island and Paradise Bay, where you’ll see incredible ice formations and majestic humpback whales along the way.

Our Antarctica cruises include stops in Argentina and Uruguay, so you’ll be able to explore two continents during the same journey.

Transcontinental Cruises

One of the simplest and most luxurious ways to discover the world is to take a transcontinental cruise that sails between two continents. Known as repositioning cruises , cruise ships traverse oceans on their way to a new region for an upcoming cruise season.

Celebrity cruising in Reykjavik, Iceland

Celebrity Eclipse

Not only are repositioning cruises an excellent way to travel on a luxury cruise around the world, they are also usually offered at a great price and provide travelers with multiple days at sea to relax and enjoy all of the amenities and entertainment options on board.

Choose from two types of repositioning cruise itineraries: Transatlantic sailings from Europe to North America and South America (or vice versa); and transpacific sailings from the South Pacific or Asia to North America (or vice versa).

The 11 Best Cruises In And Around The U.S.

multiple country cruises

  • Cruises and Sailing
  • Destinations
  • Types of Travel
  • United States

Taking a cruise is an excellent way to explore the country and world without the hassle of constantly packing and unpacking. The U.S. offers a variety of cruises, both on the ocean and river, that cater to different interests, ranging from exploring the wonders of Alaska to savoring the Pacific wine country.

With so many options, finding a cruise that fits your itinerary and budget is easy. In this post, I will share the 11 best cruises in and around the U.S. for seeing the wonders of our country and having an unforgettable vacation. Here they are, in no apparent order.

Shopping street in Bangor, Maine

1. New England/Canada

Holland America offers several New England and Canada cruise options, including a 10-day getaway from Quebec City to Fort Lauderdale or a 6-to-8-day journey from Boston to the culturally rich Montreal or Quebec City. The latter option includes stops in Bar Harbor, Maine; Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island; Halifax, Nova Scotia; Sydney, Nova Scotia; and back.

If you prefer a more extended cruise with more days at sea, Holland America has a 10-day itinerary from Quebec City to Fort Lauderdale with stops in Port Canaveral, Florida, and Portland instead of Bar Harbor, Maine.

Highlights Of New England/Canada

These Holland America cruises are ideal for those seeking fall foliage, sandy beaches, fresh seafood, the iconic Peggy’s Cove Lighthouse, the Anne of Green Gables house and farm, and the East’s most famous attraction — Acadia National Park. I found the 8-mile Confederation Bridge on Prince Edward Island truly fascinating. It stands over the Northumberland Strait and costs $50.25 to cross.

Fun Fact: Confederation Bridge is the longest bridge in the world over icy waters .

Alcatraz Island

2. California Coastal And Wine Country

Princess Cruises offers several itineraries, with my favorites being California Coastal or the Pacific Wine Country and Coastal, with stops in San Francisco and Santa Barbara , ending in Vancouver, Canada. The 7-day itinerary, which currently runs less than $500 for an inside cabin, is particularly popular. It has been named “Best Cruises from the West Coast” by Cruise Critic.

The California Coastal departs Los Angeles and stops in San Francisco; Astoria , Oregon; and Seattle, and ends in Vancouver. Princess Cruises offers a variety of onboard amenities, such as culinary experiences, the best afternoon tea at sea, and Broadway-style entertainment.

FYI: I’ve been on 54 cruises and this is one of the two I couldn’t get into a port due to the weather. In this case, it was Santa Barbara and because of the fog. Don’t be discouraged when these things happen; the cruise line’s #1 priority is keeping you safe, so you have to roll with the punches.

Glacier National Park

Carnival Cruises takes you on a 10- or 11-day journey to wondrous Alaska, departing from Seattle or San Francisco. Expect breathtaking views of natural wonders such as glaciers, fjords, and Alaska wildlife, namely bears, moose, and whales.

This Alaska itinerary boasts stops in Juneau and Ketchikan where you can explore charming towns and embark on exciting excursions. Carnival Cruises emphasizes fun and entertainment and is one of the many cruise lines that sail to Alaska .

4. American Rivers (Multiple)

Viking River Cruises offers an exciting journey from Minnesota’s Lake Itasca to the Gulf of Mexico along the Mighty Mississippi River. Three options for the American rivers that I found intriguing were Heart of the Delta (New Orleans to Memphis ), America’s Heartland (St. Louis to St. Paul), and America’s Great River (St. Paul to New Orleans). The journeys take you through iconic landmarks and scenic spots, including the St. Louis Arch, Mark Twain’s boyhood home, and Civil War battlefields.

Viking River Cruises is ideal for those interested in history, culture, and scenic landscapes, with onboard activities such as lectures, workshops, and demonstrations. All guided tours are included.

5. Columbia And Snake Rivers

The Columbia and Snake Rivers cruise with American Queen Voyages is a must-do for anyone interested in American history. This cruise follows the path that Lewis and Clark once charted through dense forests, rocky shorelines, and rich wine country.

Departing from Richland, Washington, or Portland, Oregon, this cruise is a bit pricey but well worth the investment for its educational enrichment and natural beauty. Learn about the Native American history of the area, take in breathtaking views of the Columbia River Gorge , and indulge in delicious regional cuisine.

Graceland living room

6. Cumberland And Tennessee Rivers

Immerse yourself in the charm of small-town America and the Great Smoky Mountains on a cruise down the Cumberland and Tennessee Rivers with American Queen Voyages. With all guided tours, Wi-Fi, beverages (including alcohol), and a one-night pre-cruise hotel stay included, this trip offers the ultimate vacation.

Learn how to get a National Parks senior pass before you go.

Highlights Of The Cumberland And Tennessee Rivers

Expect moonshine, Civil War historical sites, country music, Nashville traditions, and the birthplace of the blues — Memphis. While in Memphis, visiting the one and only home of Elvis Presley at Graceland is a must! I’m most intrigued by seeing Paducah, also known as Quilt City and a UNESCO World Heritage Creative City .

Presidential car at the Henry Ford Museum

7. Great Lakes

A third cruising option with American Queen Voyages uncovers the grandeur and natural beauty of the Great Lakes (which meet eight states and the Canadian province of Ontario), from Chicago to Niagara Falls. Watch the mesmerizing cascade of Niagara Falls, take a horse-drawn carriage through Mackinac Island, and soak in the fragrant pine forests of the Georgian Bay.

With carefully selected destinations and daily educational enrichment, this cruise offers a remarkable way to discover America’s northernmost wonders.

Highlights Of The Great Lakes

Having been to Michigan’s Mackinac Island, this is truly one of the treats on this itinerary. Other highlights include:

  • Chicago’s photogenic architecture
  • Magnificent Mile shopping
  • Milwaukee’s craft beer scene
  • The Henry Ford Museum
  • Traveling through the locks system

8. National Parks And Legendary Rivers

For adventure lovers and nature enthusiasts, the National Parks & Legendary Rivers cruise with American Cruise Lines is a natural fit. This 15-day, 14-night cruise on land and sea takes you through some of America’s most iconic national parks: Glacier, Grand Teton , and Yellowstone . Included are guided excursions with an adventure guide, three daily meals, and breathtaking views of the Columbia River Gorge and Snake River, all while enjoying comfortable accommodations and hotels.

This cruise is perfect for those seeking an educational experience or mature adults seeking a once-in-a-lifetime adventure. This might be my future dream cruise itinerary.

Riverboat in Natchez, Mississippi

9. Mississippi River

A list of the best cruises in the U.S. would only be complete with mentioning a classic Mississippi River cruise. This iconic American river flows through a stunning variety of landscapes, from rich forests to revered southern cities and towns. Enjoy live music, thrilling riverboat casinos, and impeccable southern cuisine on a cruise with American Queen Steamboat Company while taking in the beauty and history of the Mississippi River.

Potential city port visits among these Mississippi River cruise options include Natchez, Mississippi; Cincinnati; Madison, Indiana; Hannibal, Missouri; Dubuque, Iowa; Baton Rouge; and Memphis.

10. San Juan Islands And Puget Sound

A rare and delicious cruise itinerary I found while researching this post is yet another with American Cruise Lines . Have you ever considered cruising in Washington? I know I hadn’t. This enchanting 8-day cruise takes you through the San Juan Islands, with abundant wildlife and natural scenery, to the Puget Sound and Butchart Gardens in Victoria, Canada.

11. Olympic National Park

Olympic National Park is another unique cruise with American Cruise Lines that will allow you to witness breathtaking vistas. A few ports of call on this itinerary, or the Olympic National Park one, are lesser-known towns like Port Townsend and Anacortes.

Planning and Booking Mediterranean Cruises

Choosing the right cruise.

When planning your Mediterranean cruise for summer 2024, it’s crucial to consider your preferences and interests. With numerous cruise lines offering unique itineraries and amenities, take your time to research and find the one that suits you best.

A luxury or ultra-luxury cruise line may be the perfect option if you prefer to get away from large cruise ships and crowds. Oceania Cruises is an excellent example of a luxury cruise line offering new Mediterranean itineraries in 2024 that focus on immersive experiences in the region.

When choosing the right cruise, consider the following points:

  • Destinations and ports of call
  • Cruise duration
  • Ship size and amenities
  • Onboard activities and excursions

By considering these factors, you can ensure that you choose the perfect Mediterranean cruise that caters to your preferences and interests.

Cruise Discounts

Everyone loves a good deal, and cruising is no exception. Don’t be afraid to hunt for special offers and discounts when looking for your perfect Mediterranean cruise. Here are a few tips to help you save some money while planning your dream voyage:

  • Book Early:  Cruise lines tend to offer the best deals when itineraries are first released. Booking 6-12 months ahead will often result in a better price.
  • Travel During Shoulder Seasons:  Spring and autumn tend to be less crowded, and cruise lines may offer more attractive pricing.
  • Utilize Loyalty Programs:  Returning customers may have access to exclusive discounts through loyalty programs offered by cruise lines.
  • Look for Last-Minute Deals : Cruise lines often discount unsold cabins as the departure date approaches. Be flexible with your travel dates, and watch for these cruise deals .

Now that you better understand choosing the right cruise and finding cruise discounts, you are one step closer to enjoying a fantastic Mediterranean cruise in the summer of 2024. Remember, thoroughly researching and booking early will ensure you have the best possible experience.

Shore Excursions

Popular shore tours.

Some of the best experiences during your Mediterranean cruise will be getting off the ship and exploring incredible destinations. You don’t have to book a ship shore excursion. If you still want a knowledgeable guide but joining a tour bus in a large group is not your style, consider booking an independent shore excursion with a trusted external supplier. We love the tours offered by Viator , ToursByLocals, and Italytours.EU and some of our most memorable trips have been booked with these suppliers.

Independent Sightseeing

Consider independent sightseeing during your Mediterranean cruise if you prefer a more leisurely exploration. With several ports filled with diverse cultures and breathtaking landscapes, you can easily rent a bike, do your own walking tour, or take public transportation to experience each location at your own pace.

Check out our “Essential Guide” series and itinerary ideas about how to make the most of your time in the most popular port cities. We offer detailed itineraries, including must-see sights, transport and cruise port tips, and more. Click on our “ Essential Guide ” section and find the port you are most interested in.

Packing and Travel Tips

What to pack.

When preparing for your Mediterranean cruise in the summer of 2024, it’s important to pack smartly to enjoy your vacation fully. Here are some essential items to include in your luggage:

  • Clothes : Pack light, comfortable clothes suitable for warm weather, like T-shirts, shorts, and dresses. Bring a few swimwear sets, as you’ll likely spend time by the pool or at the beach. For evenings, pack some dressier outfits for dinners and events onboard. Don’t forget a lightweight sweater or jacket for cooler nights or visiting places with strict dress codes, such as churches or historic sites.
  • Footwear : Comfortable walking shoes are a must, as you’ll likely be exploring various ports and taking shore excursions. Pack swimming shoes or flip-flops for around the pool and on the beach, and your favorite shoes for evening events.
  • Accessories : Bring a sun hat, sunglasses, and a light scarf to protect yourself from the sun. Consider bringing a small backpack or tote bag for carrying your essentials while you’re off the ship.
  • Toiletries : Travel-sized sunscreen is crucial, along with your regular toiletries such as shampoo, conditioner, toothpaste, and a toothbrush. You may also want to pack a small bottle of bug spray.
  • Electronics : Your portable phone charger, a camera, and any necessary chargers for your devices. Additionally, pack a cruise-compliant power strip , especially if you are many in a cabin and all need to use power points simultaneously!
  • Essentials : Don’t forget to pack your necessary medications, a copy of your passport, travel insurance documents, and a credit card for emergencies.
  • Extras : A small, lightweight umbrella or raincoat can be handy, as sudden showers might occur in the Mediterranean region.

From country music to crafting: The best themed cruises for 2024 and 2025

Kristy Tolley

You come to hear the music, to pursue a hobby or to follow a celebrity. You return for the community of people sharing a common passion. Themed cruises offer the unique opportunity to find your people and explore the world with them — all while enjoying an incredible schedule of onboard activities and entertainment.

A themed cruise is a special-interest sailing based around interests and hobbies such as food and wine, sports, dancing, crafting, popular films and TV shows, lifestyles and music.

Sometimes, the themed event takes over the entire ship. Other times, the theme cruise organizer has its group join a regular itinerary but offers special events exclusive to participants.

First-time theme cruisers are lured by the chance to meet or listen to their favorite celebrities or to improve their skills in a favorite pastime. However, they often discover that the best part of a themed cruise is immersion in a community of like-minded individuals.

Themed cruises foster a warm, friendly atmosphere on board where the conversation is easy because you begin with an established connection. Days and nights of shared interests and experiences can lead to meaningful connections that can last a lifetime.

For more cruise news, reviews and tips, sign up for TPG's cruise newsletter .

What's better than being surrounded by your people, partying the night away and then retiring to your own private cabin just an elevator ride away? Not much — except perhaps encountering your celebrity crush at the ship's buffet, attending a no-holds-barred Q&A with your favorite actors or musicians or taking a small-group class with a rising star.

From a country music cruise to a golfer's dream itinerary, these are some of the best themed cruises coming up in the next year.

Note: As standard on all big-ship cruises, fares for themed cruises include several complimentary dining options. Alcohol and soda will cost extra, with package deals available depending on the cruise line and the charter company. Tours and excursions in port also cost extra. Pricing is based on two people sharing a cabin.
