Dmytro Udovychenko Awarded 1st Prize at Brussel's Queen Elisabeth Competition

Carnegie hall’s national youth orchestra usa celebrates 10th anniversary, since 2013, nyo-usa and its classical and jazz programs have hosted over 1,200 teen musicians, many of whom now play in major u.s. orchestras.

This year, Carnegie Hall is c elebrating 10 years since its launch of the National Youth Orchestra of the United States of America (NYO-USA), which provides free, audition-based intensive training and performances with industry professionals, nationally and abroad.

Following the success of NYO-USA from 2013, Carnegie Hall’s Weill Music Institute introduced NYO2 in 2016, for artists aged 14 to 17. In 2018, NYO Jazz was formed for musicians aged 16 to 19 (the same age group as NYO-USA).

Over the last decade, the three ensembles have hosted 1,274 young musicians from all 50 U.S. states and toured 17 countries on four continents.

Currently, over 70 alums of the NYO-USA programs are playing in U.S. orchestras including the Boston Symphony Orchestra, Houston Symphony, National Symphony Orchestra, New York Philharmonic, Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra, and Seattle Symphony, among other professional ensembles.

The 2023 summer program comprises 220 musicians in NYO-USA, NYO2, and NYO Jazz, who will participate in a two-week training residency at the State University of New York ’s (SUNY) Purchase College . This year’s participants represent 39 U.S. states, plus Washington, D.C. and Puerto Rico.

The NYO-USA and NYO2 programs will begin on July 1, 2023, while NYO Jazz players will begin their training on July 8, 2023 — the same day program alums from the past decade will reunite for celebratory events. The residency will include full ensemble rehearsals, sectional rehearsals, masterclasses, and private lessons.

Alongside appearances at Carnegie Hall, the young artists will tour across North America, the Dominican Republic, and Europe, where they will also serve as U.S. musical ambassadors and engage with the local musicians.

On July 14, 2023 , NYO-USA and conductor Sir Andrew Davis will perform at Carnegie Hall, before embarking on a coast to coast North American tour — joined by guest solo violinists Gil Shaham and Hilary Hahn . The program comprises Valerie Coleman’s Giants of Light , Berlioz’s Symphonie fantastique , and Barber and Tchaikovsky’s Violin Concertos.

Since 2013, the NYO-USA orchestras have featured in 36 radio, web, and TV broadcasts; presented 18 world premieres; and worked with over 40 guest artists, including Marin Alsop, Emanuel Ax, Joshua Bell, Kurt Elling, Sir Antonio Pappano, Dianne Reeves, Gil Shaham, Esperanza Spalding, Jean-Yves Thibaudet, Michael Tilson Thomas, and Alisa Weilerstein, among others.

Continuing this legacy, the NYO-USA’s 108 musicians will be performing the world premiere of Coleman’s Giants of Light , commissioned by Carnegie Hall,  plus new works written by NYO-USA’s 2023 apprentice composers Lucy Chen and Lili Masoudi-Namazi .

The NYO-USA will be joined by Symphony Tacoma ’s music director Sarah Ioannides as resident conductor, and other faculty, including violinist Ying Fu (National Symphony Orchestra), trombonist Kenneth Thompkins (Detroit Symphony Orchestra), harpist Jessica Zhou (Boston Symphony Orchestra), and more .

The 89 members of the 2023 roster for NYO2 represent 30 states, plus Puerto Rico. On July 15, 2023 , they will perform at Carnegie Hall with conductor Joseph Young (making his Carnegie Hall debut) and guest solo violinist Jennifer Koh , who will also join NYO2’s first international tour to the Dominican Republic from July 17, 2023.

The program will include Bernstein’s “Three Dance Episodes” from On the Town , Sibelius’s Violin Concerto, plus selections from Prokofiev’s Romeo and Juliet . On tour, NYO2 will perform at the Teatro Nacional Eduardo Brito and the Gran Teatro del Cibao .

The ensemble will be joined by Alexandria Symphony Orchestra ’s music director James Ross — returning for his 10th year as NYO2’s orchestra director —and other NYO2 faculty , including violinist Amy Oshiro Morales (Philadelphia Orchestra), trumpeter Tage Larson (Chicago Symphony Orchestra), and percussionist Marc Damoulakis (The Cleveland Orchestra).

Notably, NYO2 has been studied for six years by researchers at the WolfBrown consultancy firm. Their 2022 published report explored the ensemble’s aims and practices for inclusivity in music.

Led by artistic director and bandleader Sean Jones , the 2023 NYO Jazz band comprises 22 members. The second week of their residency will be hosted for the first time in Carnegie Hall’s Resnick Education Wing .

Following NYO Jazz’s Carnegie Hall performance on July 25, 2023 — led by Jones and featuring NEA Jazz Master and GRAMMY-winning vocalist Dee Dee Bridgewater — the group will begin a two-week European tour.

Venues will include the Royal Concertgebouw Amsterdam, Konzerthaus Berlin, Festival da Jazz in St. Moritz, London’s BBC Proms, Rheingau Musik Festival, and the Lucerne Festival.

Their 2023 program will include Jones’ new work “The 29ers,” commissioned by Carnegie Hall; arrangements from Terri Lynne Carrington ’s “New Standards: 101 Lead Sheets by Women Composers;” big band works by Duke Ellington, Dizzy Gillespie, and Roy Hargrove; plus other pieces exploring jazz’s influence on hip-hop, R&B, and pop music.

The NYO Jazz faculty comprises saxophonist Sharel Cassity , drummer Quincy Davis , trumpeter Tatum Greenblatt , bassist Mimi Jones , trombonist Javier Nero , pianist Helen Sung , Reginald Thomas , and guitarist Dan Wilson .

“We can’t wait to welcome NYO-USA, NYO2, and NYO Jazz for another extraordinary summer of music making,” said Carnegie Hall’s executive and artistic director, Clive Gillinson . “This summer is particularly special as it marks ten years since the creation of NYO-USA and the start of our national youth ensembles. I remember walking into the orchestra’s first rehearsal in 2013; within seconds, everybody was turning to each other and smiling because it already sounded so incredible.

“Without exception, players who have taken part in NYO tell us that the experience is transformational,” Gillinson added. “We look forward to another summer of nurturing the talents of the finest teen musicians from across America and inspiring them to take their playing to even higher levels as they prepare to share their love of music with audiences at Carnegie Hall and worldwide as the finest possible music ambassadors for their country.”

This ensemble is completely unique: in the summer of 2018, the legendary Carnegie Hall in New York City first brings together twentytwo outstanding young jazz musicians aged 16 to 19 from all over the USA to form NYO Jazz, America’s national jazz youth orchestra. An intense two-week rehearsal phase will be followed by its debut concert at Carnegie Hall as well as an extended European tour, which also brings the ensemble to Young Euro Classic in Berlin. The jazz trumpet player Sean Jones, equally renowned as a soloist, composer and pedagogue, leads NYO Jazz through its first season in 2018. After the National Youth Orchestra of the USA (NYO-USA) and NYO2, another offshoot of NYO-USA, NYO Jazz is the third ensemble founded by Carnegie Hall in recent years in order to give young, highly talented musicians intense encouragement and support on their way to professional careers or other life pursuits in music.

The former general director of Deutschlandradio (2009-2017) has an unusually intriguing biography: after studies in England and France and earning a PhD in ethnology, Steul spent almost 5 years studying blood vengeance in Afghanistan during the 1970s, teaching intermittently at the University of Kabul before turning to journalism for good. He reported from Afghanistan and Pakistan, from Beirut, Greece, Turkey and from the Gulf War in 1991 as an ARD correspondent. In 1994 he joined Deutschlandradio in Berlin as an editor in chief. In 1998 he became associate general director of the SWR and director for Baden-Württemberg; in 2009 he returned to Deutschlandradio as its general director. Dr. Willi Steul was awarded the German Cross of Merit and is a Commandeur of the French Ordre national du Mérite. He is one of the co-founders of Young Euro Classic and has been chairman of the Circle of Friends of European Youth Orchestras e.V., which has presented the festival since the year 2000.

Music and spirituality have always overlapped in the artistic vision of the trumpet player, composer, pedagogue and activist Sean Jones. Born in 1978 in Warren, Ohio, it was Miles Davis who inspired him to switch from percussion to trumpet. Only when he was 19 and already a classically trained trumpet player did he start turning increasingly to jazz. A six-month stint with the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra in New York brought him an encounter with Wynton Marsalis, who offered Jones the position of lead trumpeter in his orchestra. Ever since, he has performed with his own ensembles, but also with great jazz personalities such as Illinois Jacquet, Jimmy Heath, Frank Foster, Nancy Wilson, Dianne Reeves and Marcus Miller. Together with Herbie Hancock and Wayne Shorter, he played a “Tribute to Miles” tour in 2011. A versatile and experienced teacher as well, Jones has recently been appointed to the Richard and Elizabeth Case Chair in Jazz Studies at the Peabody Conservatory of the Johns Hopkins University. His most recent albums are im*pro*vise: never before seen (2014) and Live From Jazz At The Bistro (2017).

A winner of five Grammy Awards, Dianne Reeves is one of the world’s most prominent jazz singers. Her most recent awards came in 2006 for the soundtrack to George Clooney’s film Good Night, and Good Luck and in 2015 for her solo album Beautiful Life . Born in Detroit, Michigan, in 1956, Dianne Reeves grew up in Denver, Colorado. Her talent was discovered during a competition for high school big bands; her breakthrough came when Harry Belafonte made her a lead singer for his tours in 1983. Ever since, the vocalist has performed with doyens of jazz such as Wynton Marsalis, has toured with her own performance Sing the Truth! , but has also worked with classical ensembles, including the Berlin Philharmonic under Simon Rattle. Since her debut album in 1977 Dianne Reeves has produced more than 20 records, including Quiet After the Storm (1994), In the Moment: Live in Concert (2000) and A Little Moonlight (2004). In 2018, the National Endowment for the Arts will designate her a Jazz Master—the highest honour the United States bestows on jazz artists.

NYO Jazz First tour and studio album

Carnegie Hall has announced the schedule for the first-ever US tour by its acclaimed NYO Jazz set to take place on the heels of the June 24, 2022 release of the ensemble’s first full-length studio album, We’re Still Here. The album features NYO Jazz Artistic Director and Bandleader/trumpeter Sean Jones and special guest Melissa Aldana on tenor saxophone, plus an appearance by trombonist Wycliffe Gordon. Available for pre-order, the album will be released by Platoon and will be available for digital download and on all streaming platforms in standard and Dolby Atmos Spatial Audio formats.

Following NYO Jazz’s US tour kick-off concert at Carnegie Hall on Thursday, July 28, the ensemble—joined by this summer’s special guest vocalist Jazzmeia Horn—will tour seven US cities under the direction of Sean Jones. The tour stops include: Cleveland, OH on July 30 (Tri-C Metro Auditorium); Chautauqua, NY on August 1 (Chautauqua Amphitheater); Pittsburgh, PA on August 2 (The August Wilson African American Cultural Center); Chicago, IL on August 4 (Navy Pier, Lake Stage in Polk Bros Park); Detroit, MI on August 5 (The Max M. and Marjorie S. Fisher Music Center); Madison, WI on August 7 (Wisconsin Union Theater); and Washington, D.C. on August 9 (The John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts).

“I’m very excited to perform with the amazing young musicians of Carnegie Hall’s NYO Jazz this summer,” said Jazzmeia Horn. “What a wonderful opportunity as this tour marks my first time playing an entire tour with a big band and I’m especially thrilled to sing selections from my new big band album, Dear Love. I’m curious to see how NYO Jazz will interpret my latest expression of love musically as we connect with audiences in cities around the US. This will be a fun journey to share with them!”

One of Carnegie Hall’s three acclaimed national youth ensembles, NYO Jazz—comprising outstanding young musicians ages 16–19 from across the United States—showcases the legacy and bright future of American jazz. Created in 2018 by the Hall’s Weill Music Institute, NYO Jazz annually brings together some of the nation’s finest teen jazz musicians to train, perform, and tour with world-class jazz masters while also serving as music ambassadors for their country. NYO Jazz’s successful international tours have included a 2018 inaugural European tour with Dianne Reeves as special guest, and the ensemble’s debut tour to Asia in 2019 with Kurt Elling as special guest. Although NYO Jazz was unable to travel during the past two years, the musicians convened virtually during the summer of 2020 and at Purchase College, State University of New York (SUNY) just north of New York City, in summer 2021, rehearsing and recording a wide range of repertoire, including its debut album.

We’re Still Here features four new works written for the band since its inception, a range of classic and contemporary charts that are hallmarks of its live concerts, and works exploring themes that include social justice, resilience, and the power of music to spark joy. The four Carnegie Hall-commissioned works on the album are: “Run with Jones” by Miguel Zenón, featuring Melissa Aldana as soloist; “Mr. Jones and Co.” by Ayn Inserto, featuring Sean Jones as soloist; “Fête dans la tête” by John Beasley; and “RPM’s” by Igmar Thomas. In addition to these commissions, among the album highlights include: “We’re Still Here” by—and featuring—trombonist and NYO Jazz faculty member Wycliffe Gordon, which has become the band’s rousing encore theme song; hence, the album’s title; “The Art of War” by Ralph Peterson; “Oyelo” by Miguel Zenón, featuring Melissa Aldana as soloist; “A Taste of Honey” by Duke Pearson; “Mr. Gentle and Mr. Cool” by Duke Ellington, arranged by NYO Jazz ensemble coach Reginald Thomas; and “Transitions” by Sean Jones.

“You close your eyes and think they’re all 20 years older than they are,” said Sean Jones, who pays it forward through his passionate leadership of NYO Jazz, carrying on the tradition of mentorship in jazz.

The album—recorded during the ensemble’s summer 2021 training residency at Purchase College, SUNY, amidst the COVID-19 pandemic—is a declaration of resilience and longevity. A summer that began with the disappointment of a year without touring evolved into the opportunity to create this 97-minute showcase of the incredible artistry and enormous versatility of this remarkable ensemble, a recording poised to reach audiences around the world just as the ensemble resumes touring in summer 2022.

“We’re thrilled for NYO Jazz to release its debut album this spring—the first recording by any of our national youth ensembles,” said Sarah Johnson, Chief Education Officer and Director of Carnegie Hall’s Weill Music Institute. “It’s a tremendous opportunity for these gifted young players to train, perform, and now record alongside some of today’s leading jazz artists including special guest Melissa Aldana. It was especially meaningful for the musicians to gather for an extended residency last summer as it marked the first time many of them had the opportunity to come together to play in a full ensemble since the start of the pandemic. With We’re Still Here, we are proud to showcase the incredible depth of talent and high level of musicianship of these standout jazz musicians from across the country who will help ensure one of America’s quintessential art forms is preserved for generations to come.”

“The big band has always been America’s orchestral format and one of the most wide-ranging ensembles ever devised,” said Sean Jones, NYO Jazz’s Artistic Director and Bandleader. “It can convey nearly any style of music in a sonically stimulating and interactive way. This recording exhibits that diversity by placing classics by Duke Ellington and Neil Hefti alongside pieces that utilize the big band as a vehicle for contemporary American music and represent a wide variety of genres.”

“Making this album was an absolute labor of love for the musicians, our incredible faculty and guest artists, and everyone involved,” said Joanna Massey, Director of Learning & Engagement Programs for Carnegie Hall’s Weill Music Institute, who has worked with the NYO Jazz program since its inception. “From their individual preparation prior to coming together as an ensemble, through long days of rehearsals and then recording sessions, the musicians were unwavering and inspiring in their dedication to producing something meaningful for the world to hear. It’s particularly special that by recording all of the original music written especially for NYO Jazz, the album also pays tribute to the outstanding musicians from previous NYO Jazz ensembles—who, like the players heard here, embody the future of jazz.”

About NYO Jazz:

Each summer, NYO Jazz, led by artistic director Sean Jones, shines a spotlight on the depth of talent found among teen jazz players across the United States. The program offers talented young musicians, ages 16-19, the opportunity to perform as cultural ambassadors for their country, sharing a uniquely American musical genre with people around the world through an international tour. The members of NYO Jazz have been recognized by Carnegie Hall as being among the finest jazz musicians in the country, following a rigorous and highly competitive audition process. After its Carnegie Hall debut in 2018, the ensemble embarked on its first-ever international tour for performances with vocalist Dianne Reeves at prestigious concert halls and music festivals in London, Amsterdam, Edinburgh, Kassel, and Berlin. In summer 2019, NYO Jazz made its debut tour to Asia, joined by vocalist Kurt Elling, including performances in Taichung, Beijing, Shanghai, Zhuhai, and Hong Kong. As part of their travel schedule, NYO Jazz musicians also have opportunities to meet and collaborate with young local musicians and experience the richness of different cultures and music.

If you hear about José André Montaño performing anywhere in D.C., you will want to be in that room.

Mostly self-taught, he started playing piano at age four. Now at age 18 and a rising senior at the Duke Ellington School of the Arts, Montaño has performed in D.C., around the U.S. and in several countries. The fact that Montaño is blind has not interfered with his drive to continue developing his music skills at a hard-driving pace.

I saw Montaño lead his trio a couple of months ago at Flavor Garden, a restaurant in the Van Ness area of Northwest, D.C. His trio included drummer Lenny Robinson and bassist Grant Lay.

“It was fun to play with those cats,” said Montaño. “We played the first set as the house band, then other musicians came through. Some of my friends from school were there.”

Calling fellow musicians “cats” or “bros” is common when Montaño talks about collaborating with artists.

He is comfortable with musicians of any age.

The Love of Jazz

Montaño is interested in several genres of music, but what drew him to jazz?

“Well, when I was a little kid, I listened to a lot of Miles Davis, specifically the tune ‘So What.’  I have loved jazz since then,” Montaño said. “I love the feeling of it and how you can interact and play what’s in your heart. It’s a genre to express yourself and improvise.”

With school and jazz gigs, Montaño has a busy schedule. Last year, he performed at the U.S. Department of Education with the Herbie Hancock Institute of Jazz (HHIJ) Peer-to-Peer Group. The students were joined by U.S. Secretary of Education Dr. Miguel Cardona , who played bongos with the group.

This year, Montaño became a formal member of the HHIJ Peer-to-Peer Program . As a member of the 2023 sextet, Montaño and his high school bandmates traveled to Richmond, Williamsburg, and Charlottesville, Virginia performing at high schools, and discussing jazz with local students. A concert at D.C.’s historic Blues Alley wrapped up this year’s tour.

The Peer-to-Peer program is headed by JB Dyas, Ph.D., vice president for Education and Curriculum Development at HHIJ. He met Montaño last year when he played with students who performed with Cardona.

“José is an angel. He’s an example of when you’re given a set of circumstances, you have a decision to make,” Dyas said. “That decision is to take that set of circumstances and shine or to allow yourself to be encumbered by it. Well, he’s shining bright.”

Carnegie Hall and a European Tour

This summer, Montaño is in the prestigious NYO Jazz program. This jazz intensive is a part of the historic Carnegie Hall, where 22 young musicians ages 16–19 from across the U.S. are led by Artistic Director Sean Jones.

Jones, a trumpeter and an educator at The John Hopkins University’s Peabody Institute in Baltimore, recently worked with Montaño as a mentor for this year’s HHJI Peer-to-Peer Sextet. This week the group is in concert at Carnegie Hall with vocalist Dee Dee Bridgewater , a National Endowment for the Arts Jazz Master. NYO Jazz and Bridgewater will then tour Europe performing at several jazz festivals.

Montaño is usually accompanied by one or both of his parents when he performs. That means they also keep a busy schedule. Giovanna and Roberto Montaño love seeing their son create magic with his piano. They have been intent to ensure the best music educators surround their son. That’s how they found pianist and composer Cyrus Chestnut who became their son’s mentor.

Chestnut is also on the faculty at Howard University as a master instructor in jazz piano and improvisation. He began working with Montaño in 2014.

Like everyone else who has encountered Montaño, Chestnut used the word “amazing” several times when describing his mentee. He described how Montaño can listen to a piece of music and play it back with astonishing accuracy.

“He has an insane ear. He can process things in a way that is very special,” Chestnut said about his mentee. “He’s a brilliant human being. In a short time, the whole world will be able to experience that brilliance.”

nyo jazz european tour

Carnegie Hall’s Weill Music Institute has announced the launch of NYO Jazz, a four-week intensive summer program designed to nurture and showcase the talents of exceptional young American jazz instrumentalists aged between 16 and 19 beginning in summer 2018.

The new program will bring together outstanding young musicians from across the U.S. to collaborate with their peers and experience in-depth training under the guidance of a world-class faculty, as well as a different celebrated guest artist each year. Trumpeter, composer and educator Sean Jones will be the artistic advisor of the program’s inaugural edition and will also direct the big band’s debut performance at Carnegie Hall in July 2018, followed by a tour of Europe’s great music capitals and prestigious festivals.

“I look forward to sharing what promises to be an unforgettable, life-changing experience with the students who will come together to create NYO Jazz,” said Jones in a press release, “as well as inspiring audiences with memorable performances that place the spotlight on our gifted youth and America’s beloved musical genre.”

Led by Marin Alsop, repertoire for NYO-USA's concert at Carnegie Hall and on tour includes Barber's Symphony No. 1, Gershwin's Rhapsody in Blue featuring guest soloist Jean-Yves Thibaudet, and Rimsky-Korsakov's Scheherazade. NYO-USA's tour stops this August include debuts in Montevideo's Auditorio Nacional del Sodre ( August 8 ), Buenos Aires's Teatro Colón ( August 10 ), and Brazil's Theatro Municipal, in Rio de Janeiro ( August 12 ), and the Sala São Paulo ( August 14 ). While on tour in South America, the NYO-USA musicians will have the chance to take part in peer-to-peer exchange with young musicians in São Paulo as well as tour the magnificent cities that they will perform in. This marks NYO-USA's second tour to South America led by conductor Marin Alsop, who led the orchestra in 2017 in performances in Guadalajara, Quito, and Bogotá. Cultural exchange is a key part of participating in NYO-USA, as members act as dynamic musical ambassadors for their country. The orchestra's concert at Carnegie Hall on August 5 will be heard by music lovers worldwide through the Carnegie Hall Live radio broadcast and digital series, created in partnership with WQXR.

“We are thrilled that NYO-USA has the opportunity to take part in this wonderful tour of some of South America's finest cities and concert halls,” said Clive Gillinson, Carnegie Hall's Executive and Artistic Director. “Following their Carnegie Hall performance presented as part the Hall's World Orchestra Week festival, which brings together top youth orchestras from around the world, these talented players will head south for a week of concerts, travel, and cultural exchange with peer musicians. This summer promises to offer truly memorable life-changing experiences for them, as they connect with music lovers wherever they go, serving as dynamic ambassadors for our country.”

"Music has always been a vital link between the vibrant societies of Brazil and the United States,” said Ambassador Maria Luiza Ribeiro Viotti, Brazilian Ambassador to the United States. “The NYO-USA's South American tour promises a blend of exceptional artistry and rich cultural exchange. It brings me great joy to see these interactions begin at an early age, as in this case. The tour will be another important initiative in celebrating the 200-year anniversary of Brazil-US diplomatic relations."

"The National Youth Orchestra of the USA's interaction with young musicians in Brazil will mark one more important—and innovative—musical partnership between Brazil and the US, very much in line with previous encounters that Carnegie Hall helped to promote—like Tom Jobim and Frank Sinatra—and which now have historical importance," said Ambassador Adalnio Ganem, Consul General of Brazil in New York.

Prior to their tour, NYO-USA will take part in Carnegie Hall's historic summer concert festival— World Orchestra Week (WOW!), a celebration of international youth orchestras—scheduled to take place from August 1–7. Inspired by the Hall's three critically acclaimed national youth ensembles, this ambitious international initiative brings five youth orchestras from Africa, Asia, Europe, and Latin America to New York City for high-level music making with some of today's most internationally renowned artists plus cultural exchange activities among the orchestras, including a massive play-in event led by Gustavo Dudamel to include all 700 young musicians. Carnegie Hall's NYO-USA and NYO2 perform alongside the National Children's Symphony of Venezuela, the Africa United Youth Orchestra, the Beijing Youth Orchestra, the European Union Youth Orchestra, and the Afghan Youth Orchestra. The members of the 2024 orchestra—ages 16–19, hailing from 34 US states plus the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico—have been recognized by Carnegie Hall as being among the finest players in the country following a comprehensive and highly selective audition process. This summer's orchestra features 15 musicians who previously played with NYO-USA, as well as 30 musicians who gained experience through NYO2, a program for younger players ages 14–17, and one musician who previously performed as part of NYO Jazz. NYO-USA and NYO2 are offered free of charge, ensuring that all invited musicians have the opportunity to take part. Click here for a full list of musicians . In preparation for their performances and tour, the musicians will arrive on July 20 from across the country for an intensive training residency at Purchase College, State University of New York (SUNY), just north of New York City. NYO-USA musicians will work with leading players from America's top professional orchestras, and take part in full ensemble and sectional rehearsals, master classes, and more. James Ross returns as orchestra director to lead both NYO-USA and NYO2 during the Purchase College residency, working closely with 2024 assistant conductors Tamara Dworetz and Carlos Ágreda. The Unique Burial of a Child of Early Scythian Time at the Cemetery of Saryg-Bulun (Tuva)

In 1988, the Tuvan Archaeological Expedition (led by M. E. Kilunovskaya and V. A. Semenov) discovered a unique burial of the early Iron Age at Saryg-Bulun in Central Tuva. There are two burial mounds of the Aldy-Bel culture dated by 7th century BC. Within the barrows, which adjoined one another, forming a figure-of-eight, there were discovered 7 burials, from which a representative collection of artifacts was recovered. Burial 5 was the most unique, it was found in a coffin made of a larch trunk, with a tightly closed lid. Due to the preservative properties of larch and lack of air access, the coffin contained a well-preserved mummy of a child with an accompanying set of grave goods. The interred individual retained the skin on his face and had a leather headdress painted with red pigment and a coat, sewn from jerboa fur. The coat was belted with a leather belt with bronze ornaments and buckles. Besides that, a leather quiver with arrows with the shafts decorated with painted ornaments, fully preserved battle pick and a bow were buried in the coffin. Unexpectedly, the full-genomic analysis, showed that the individual was female. This fact opens a new aspect in the study of the social history of the Scythian society and perhaps brings us back to the myth of the Amazons, discussed by Herodotus. Of course, this discovery is unique in its preservation for the Scythian culture of Tuva and requires careful study and conservation.
