About the business.

For over 40 years, experienced Sierra Club instructors have taught wilderness skills to thousands of Southern Californians. Each year we instruct several hundred students in small groups with a very high instructor to student ratio that provides plenty of one on one instruction. These small groups remain together for the duration of the class, building a true sense of camaraderie among the students. For many, WTC provides not only valuable skills and knowledge, but also lasting friendships. …

I have a small bit of experience car camping with friends at the well used campgrounds we have in Southern California. WTC showed me a whole universe of opportunities available to the west coast that are incredibly beautiful, majestic, and just waiting to be explored if you leave the car parked and walk just a couple hours away from the same old trails. The WTC program is a well-structured, thorough introduction to backpacking, mountaineering, off-trail travel/orienteering and the outdoors. You'll have 10 evening classroom sessions that cover topics like desert travel, first aid, gear selection, and much more. Your leaders then organize four trips to put your new knowledge to use (local mountains, desert navigation, snow hiking, snow camping). WTC is big (250+ students throughout SoCal each year); though most of what you do ends up being with your smaller group of 20 people. The staff of West LA's Group 4 was phenomenal. Bob has tremendous amounts of knowledge and patience. His support staff (Dwain, Shawnte, Chi, Katherine, Bernie, Revati, Shobhan, Regge, Kristina, Monica, Susan, Sarah, Kim, and Gunner) clearly have a lot of enthusiasm for the outdoors and love sharing their passion. Moreover, every single leader was a volunteer too! Everyone was respectful (until me and some students put a stop to that!) and great fun to spend time with. They continue to share advice and experience with us long after the course was over. Also, request WLA Group 4 to get more practice with navigation. Will I be out in the mountains for weeks at a time all year long? Probably not; but I have a new respect and *tons* of new knowledge that will help shape my 1-3 day trips into amazing experiences that weren't available to me before. Now I get to enjoy pristine mountain lakes, unspoiled nature, and get to choose the drunks I'm surrounded by. If you've been backpacking and doing a bit of research online, some of the classroom stuff might feel a bit slow and repetitive; but all that you learn and the opportunity of sharing tips with everyone will make the class more than worth your time. While your experience will obviously vary depending on the leaders in your group and the other students, expect a few weeks filled with neat stuff to learn and a lot of new friends to share their love of the outdoors. But seriously.. sign up for WLA Group 4.
