The Winery Dogs Book 2023 Tour Dates, Announce New Album

Drink it in! The Winery Dogs are on their way back for 2023. The all-star trio of Richie Kotzen , Billy Sheehan and Mike Portnoy have gotten their ducks in a row for the new year, starting with a brand new album in early February followed by a U.S. tour a few weeks later.

After back-to-back albums, The Winery Dogs members took a break to focus on other projects, but over the past year they've found their way back together to work on new music. The band's third album carries the simple moniker, III , and the 10-track set is on target for a Feb. 3 release through the group's own Three Dog Music Label. The band self-produced the album with mixing help from longtime associate Jay Ruston.

Fans will have to wait just a little while longer for new music as "Xanadu," the album's lead single, will arrive on Dec. 9, the same day that pre-orders will begin. Fans can also looking for a vinyl edition release as well, with info coming soon.

Speaking about the forthcoming single, Portnoy simply states, “Coming out of the gates, that’s a barnburner. It’s one of the fiercest tracks on the album.” How fierce you may ask? Portnoy drops his drum sticks right as the song concludes. “At the end there, you’re hearing me toss my sticks — not in frustration, but very much in satisfaction of what we had just done,” he clarifies with a laugh.

That should definitely whet your appetite for the tour to follow. Fans will be able to catch The Winery Dogs on tour again, starting with a Feb. 15 kickoff in Greensburg, Pa. at the Palace Theatre. U.S. dates will continue into early April, with the band also booking a trio of late April dates in Brazil as well. See all the stops below, and get ticketing and VIP info via their website .

The Winery Dogs (Richie Kotzen, Billy Sheehan, Mike Portnoy) Announce New Album and 2023 US Tour

The trio hits the road in February in support of its third full-length LP

The Winery Dogs (Richie Kotzen, Billy Sheehan, Mike Portnoy) Announce New Album and 2023 US Tour

The Winery Dogs — the supergroup featuring singer-guitarist Richie Kotzen , bassist Billy Sheehan (Mr. Big, David Lee Roth), and drummer Mike Portnoy (Metal Allegiance, ex-Dream Theater) have announced a new album and 2023 US tour.

The extensive trek kicks off February 15th in Greensburg, Pennsylvania, and runs through April 6th in Nashville. Ticket pre-sales for select dates start Tuesday (November 22nd) at 10 a.m. ET using the code HEADLINE . Pick up tickets via Ticketmaster .

The outing launches shortly after the release of The Winery Dogs’ third full-length album, appropriately titled III . The opening track and lead single, “Xanadu,” will be available to those who pre-order the LP beginning December 9th.

While we can’t listen to the new song just yet, Portnoy describes it as a “barnburner.” Given the combined talent of the supergroup’s three virtuosos, we’ll take him for his word.

“It’s one of the fiercest tracks on the album,” Portnoy continued. “At the end there, you’re hearing me toss my sticks — not in frustration, but very much in satisfaction of what we had just done.”

The Winery Dogs have been active off-and-on over the years. Following their 2015 sophomore album Hot Streak , the group went on hiatus before reuniting for shows in 2019. It was during that run of dates where the band realized “a third album was definitely in the cards,” according to Portnoy.

Added Sheehan: “Getting back together like that was really refreshing. We could relax a bit and enjoy being together onstage, playing without any pressure. It was a beautiful thing.”

The Winery Dogs Announce III Album, 2023 Tour Dates

winery dogs tour 2023 setlist

It’s been, well, a literal dog’s age since the vibrant powerhouse trio known as The Winery Dogs – Richie Kotzen, Mike Portnoy, and Billy Sheehan – marked their recording territory with new music. But now, following a seven-year break from the studio, The Winery Dogs are back in full force with their aptly named third album III , which is set for release on February 3, 2023 on the band’s Three Dog Music label (via Burnside Distribution/The Orchard). Following in the footsteps of their first two albums, III was once again self-produced by The Winery Dogs and mixed by longtime band associate Jay Ruston.

Pre-orders will be available starting Friday, December 9 on CD and all digital formats, which include an instant download of the album’s first song to be released, “Xanadu.” A vinyl edition of III will also be forthcoming in just a few months.

While the all-out smokin’ opening track and lead single “Xanadu,” title might evoke different imagery in more progressive-leaning listening circles, Kotzen’s zen-seeking, hard-rocking ruminations on “Xanadu” once again shine a light on the eternal power of good collaboration. “Coming out of the gates, that’s a barnburner,” acknowledges Portnoy. “It’s one of the fiercest tracks on the album.” Incidentally, eagle ears will also delight in picking up on how definitively Portnoy drops his drumsticks right as the song concludes. “At the end there, you’re hearing me toss my sticks — not in frustration, but very much in satisfaction of what we had just done,” he clarifies with a laugh.

In addition to the new music, fans will also be excited to hear that the trio is hitting the worldwide concert trail starting February 15 in Greensburg, PA at the Palace Theatre for their “2022 III World Tour.”

From the clarion call for connection and societal understanding in “Mad World” to the door-opening personal realizations of “Breakthrough” to the undeniable muscle-flexing reign of the white-hot “Pharaoh” and the album-closing energy spillage of “The Red Wine,” all 50-plus minutes of III prove The Winery Dogs haven’t lost a step when it comes to conjuring fresh hooks, gutbucket grooves, and bold harmonies.

That said, it’s been a long road back to the collective compound for guitarist/vocalist Richie Kotzen, bassist/vocalist Billy Sheehan, and drummer/vocalist Mike Portnoy. Back in 2015-16, they hit the road hard together to showcase their mettle as hardcore (you guessed it) road dogs in order to build upon the success of their well-received 2015 sophomore studio effort, Hot Streak , by touring all across the globe. Eventually, the seasoned trio returned to their respective corners to focus on various other projects for the ensuing next few years. But when that live itch needed another scratching, these three working musicians knew just what they had to do.

“We wanted to tour,” Kotzen confirms succinctly of The Winery Dogs’ 22-date run in early 2019 that was appropriately dubbed “Who Let The Dogs Out,” before adding, “We had to get those cylinders firing together once again.” Concurs Portnoy, “That was a fun little tour that reignited our enthusiasm — and that’s also when we knew a third album was definitely in the cards.” Adds Sheehan, “Getting back together like that was really refreshing. We could relax a bit and enjoy being together onstage, playing without any pressure. It was a beautiful thing.”

Duly reinvigorated, The Winery Dogs were finally aligned to record again by initially ensconcing themselves together in Kotzen’s intimate, cozy home studio in Southern California to jam on new material that was mainly created in the moment during many hours of face-to-face musical interaction. Always the driven and intuitive songwriter, Kotzen displays a definitive M.O. whenever he’s working out new songs in the studio by scatting melodies and putting forth short bursts of semi-improvised lines and phrases that will soon enough transform into sharply honed subject matter. “My attitude is this: when I’m in the studio creating new music, the last thing on my mind is, ‘How am I gonna do it live?’” Kotzen admits. “The reality is, I may never get to where I’ll do it live. What’s relevant is getting the vision that’s in my head, in my heart, and in my soul to come out of the speakers. If it gets to the point where the tour is booked, the dates are confirmed, and we all get back in the rehearsal room together, that’s when you figure out, ‘OK, how do I interpret this in a way it can be delivered live, and still be the same song?’”

CONCERT REVIEW: THE WINERY DOGS Unleash Brilliance Over Nashville in Electrifying Tour Closing Night (April 6th, 2023)

winery dogs tour 2023 setlist

As a female music journalist and an unapologetic groupie, I couldn’t help but feel a surge of excitement and anticipation as I made my way to The Brooklyn Bowl in Nashville, TN on Thursday, April 7th, 2023. The Winery Dogs , the power trio that has stolen my heart with their genre-defying sound and incredible musicianship, were set to take the stage. For those unfamiliar with this virtuosic trio, they are a powerful fusion of rock and blues, composed of the inimitable Richie Kotzen on vocals and guitar, the legendary Billy Sheehan on bass, and the ever-dynamic Mike Portnoy on drums. The Winery Dogs have been a personal favorite of mine since their inception in 2012, and their live performances never cease to amaze me.

Richie Kotzen

From the moment they opened with “Gaslight,” a song from their latest album “III,” I knew I was in for an unforgettable night. Richie Kotzen ‘s soulful voice and electrifying guitar riffs sent chills down my spine as Billy Sheehan ‘s bass lines and Mike Portnoy ‘s thunderous drumming created a powerful rhythmic foundation.

Billy Sheehan

As the night progressed, I found myself getting lost in their music, with new songs like “Mad World” and “Xanadu” touching my soul and stirring my emotions. When they played fan favorites “I’m No Angel” and “Captain Love,” I couldn’t help but sing along at the top of my lungs, feeling a deep connection with the band and the audience around me. One moment that will forever be etched in my memory is Billy Sheehan ‘s jaw-dropping bass solo. As a long-time admirer of his incredible talent, witnessing his virtuosity up close left me awestruck. I could see the passion in his eyes as he effortlessly executed complex tapping and slapping techniques, leaving me and the rest of the audience utterly mesmerized.

Mike Portnoy

The evening seemed to pass by all too quickly, and as the band wrapped up their main set with the anthemic “Oblivion,” I found myself yearning for more. Luckily, The Winery Dogs returned to the stage for an encore, performing a heart-wrenching rendition of “Regret” that brought tears to my eyes. The night ended on a high note with “Elevate,” a song that has always inspired me to rise above life’s challenges.

As I left The Brooklyn Bowl, I couldn’t help but feel grateful for the experience. In a world where live music has become more precious than ever, The Winery Dog s reminded me of the power of connection that can only be found at a truly exceptional concert. It’s nights like these that make me proud to be a music journalist and an undying superfan, and I can’t wait for the next opportunity to witness their unrivaled musicianship and genuine passion for their craft in person.

The Winery Dogs... this may be the MOST talented 3 piece Rock Band around. Their live show really shows the power of these 3 players; Richie Kotzen, Mike Portnoy and Billy Sheehan. Although they only have one album out, they show promise when player unrecorded stuff that will likely be on their next album. Mixing in some Jimmy Hendrix, Ritchie's solo stuff and a crazy Bass Solo by Billy. They even played Shy Boy from Billy's former gig with David Lee Roth. Saw them at The Coach House. While the sound is great, seating is a bit challenging when try to give a standing ovation; Mass Dinner Style seating, elbow to elbow. Their harder rockin' songs really came alive and their ballads were powerful live. The studio album is great but to see them live will make you a fan forever!

The concert was amazing, they never disappoint, the only problem was the venue. Here you pay for a ticket but that doesn't mean you will be able to see anything, even if you get to the venue when the doors are opening. As it happened.

Completely worth a road trip!!! Highly anticipated and we was completely impressed!!! Such a talented group of men. So much talent, and undulating passion on their stage. High energy from beginning to end!!!

Fantastic high energy show from both the band and audience. The Winery Dogs always bring it. Great set list which is the same they've had for most of this tour, but not a weak song in the bunch.

THE WINERY DOGS Announce June 2023 European Tour

THE WINERY DOGS will embark on a European tour in June 2023. The powerhouse trio consisting of guitarist/vocalist Richie Kotzen , bassist/vocalist Billy Sheehan and drummer/vocalist Mike Portnoy will be playing shows in support of its third album, "III" , which is set for release on February 3, 2023 on the band's Three Dog Music label (via Burnside Distribution / The Orchard ). Following in the footsteps of their first two albums, "III" was once again produced by THE WINERY DOGS and mixed by longtime band associate Jay Ruston .

THE WINERY DOGS 2023 European tour dates:

Jun. 12 - Hamburg, Germany @ Markthalle Jun. 13 - Zoetermeer, Netherlands @ Cultuurpodium Boerderij Jun. 15 - Dessel, Belgium @ Graspop Metal Meeting Jun. 16 - Wolverhampton, United Kingdom @ KK's Steel Mill Jun. 17 - Nottingham, United Kingdom @ Rock City Jun. 18 - London, United Kingdom @ 02 Shepherds Bush Empire Jun. 20 - Cologne, Germany @ Die Kantine Jun. 21 - Frankfurt Am Main, Germany @ Batschkapp Jun. 22 - Milan, Italy @ Alcatraz Jun. 25 - Cartagena, Spain @ El Batel Park Jun. 27 - Angoulins, France @ Crossroad

Pre-orders for "III" will be available starting Friday, December 9 on CD and all digital formats, which include an instant download of the album's first song to be released, "Xanadu" . A vinyl edition of "III" will also be forthcoming in just a few months.

While the all-out smokin' opening track and lead single "Xanadu" , title might evoke different imagery in more progressive-leaning listening circles, Kotzen 's zen-seeking, hard-rocking ruminations on "Xanadu" once again shine a light on the eternal power of good collaboration. "Coming out of the gates, that's a barnburner," acknowledges Portnoy . "It's one of the fiercest tracks on the album." Incidentally, eagle ears will also delight in picking up on how definitively Portnoy drops his drumsticks right as the song concludes. "At the end there, you're hearing me toss my sticks — not in frustration, but very much in satisfaction of what we had just done," he clarifies with a laugh.

From the clarion call for connection and societal understanding in "Mad World" to the door-opening personal realizations of "Breakthrough" to the undeniable muscle-flexing reign of the white-hot "Pharaoh" and the album-closing energy spillage of "The Red Wine" , all 50-plus minutes of "III" prove THE WINERY DOGS haven't lost a step when it comes to conjuring fresh hooks, gutbucket grooves, and bold harmonies.

That said, it's been a long road back to the collective compound for Kotzen , Sheehan and Portnoy . Back in 2015-16, they hit the road hard together to showcase their mettle as hardcore (you guessed it) road dogs in order to build upon the success of their well-received 2015 sophomore studio effort, "Hot Streak" , by touring all across the globe. Eventually, the seasoned trio returned to their respective corners to focus on various other projects for the ensuing next few years. But when that live itch needed another scratching, these three working musicians knew just what they had to do.

"We wanted to tour," Kotzen confirms succinctly of THE WINERY DOGS ' 22-date run in early 2019 that was appropriately dubbed "Who Let The Dogs Out" , before adding, "We had to get those cylinders firing together once again." Concurs Portnoy , "That was a fun little tour that reignited our enthusiasm — and that's also when we knew a third album was definitely in the cards." Adds Sheehan , "Getting back together like that was really refreshing. We could relax a bit and enjoy being together onstage, playing without any pressure. It was a beautiful thing."

Duly reinvigorated, THE WINERY DOGS were finally aligned to record again by initially ensconcing themselves together in Kotzen 's intimate, cozy home studio in Southern California to jam on new material that was mainly created in the moment during many hours of face-to-face musical interaction. Always the driven and intuitive songwriter, Kotzen displays a definitive M.O. whenever he's working out new songs in the studio by scatting melodies and putting forth short bursts of semi-improvised lines and phrases that will soon enough transform into sharply honed subject matter. "My attitude is this: when I'm in the studio creating new music, the last thing on my mind is, 'How am I gonna do it live?'" Kotzen admits. "The reality is, I may never get to where I'll do it live. What's relevant is getting the vision that's in my head, in my heart, and in my soul to come out of the speakers. If it gets to the point where the tour is booked, the dates are confirmed, and we all get back in the rehearsal room together, that's when you figure out, 'Okay, how do I interpret this in a way it can be delivered live, and still be the same song?'"

"III" is the follow-up to the band's critically acclaimed and Billboard -charting album "Hot Streak" , which was released October 2, 2015 on Loud & Proud Records via RED (a division of Sony Music Entertainment ). After landing in the Top Five on many of Amazon 's pre-order charts, including No. 1 on the Amazon BestSellers/Hard Rock chart and No. 1 on the Amazon Pre-Orders/Hard Rock Albums charts, it sold 30% more than their 2013 self-titled debut, landing them on various Billboard album charts including No. 2 on "Top Current Alternative Albums," No. 5 on "Top Current Hard Music" and "Top Hard Music Albums," No. 6 on "Top Current Rock Albums" and "Album Core / Genre Rock," No. 15 "Top Current Physical Albums," No. 16 "Top Current Albums," and No. 30 on the "Top 200 Albums" chart.

Upon its release, "Hot Streak" racked up rave reviews. Allmusic.com hailed, " 'Hot Streak' is the trio's second album, and its loose, friendly feel shows that the trio doesn't feel compelled to rely on instrumental pyrotechnics. The bluesy, soulful 'Think it Over' would appeal to those who admire THE ALLMAN BROTHERS , while 'Captain Love' shows that the band also has some hard rock energy to unleash, and the title track lets fly some of the technical proficiency that its members are known for." And GuitarInternational.com praised, " 'Hot Streak' picks up where their debut CD left off, but showcases the band coming into their own with straight-ahead rockers like 'Oblivion' , 'Captain Love' and 'Devil You Know' ."

"III" track listing:

01. Xanadu 02. Mad World 03. Breakthrough 04. Rise 05. Stars 06. The Vengeance 07. Pharaoh 08. Gaslight 09. Lorelei 10. The Red Wine

THE WINERY DOGS will kick off a month-and-a-half-long U.S. tour on February 15 in Greensburg, Pennsylvania. A three-date tour of Brazil will follow in April.
