Bimini Cruise Port: Everything You Need To Know

Picture of Doug Parker

A new port joins Nassau and Freeport in the Bahamas, giving cruisers more of a selection when choosing a Bahamian itinerary.

In July 2021, Resorts World Bimini Cruise Port welcomed its first cruise ship when  Crystal Serenity  docked with cruise passengers. Four days later, Carnival Cruise Line made its first call there with Carnival Horizon.

Resorts World Bimini Cruise Port

Located 55 nautical miles off the coast of Miami, the Bimini Islands is primarily a beach destination with some added history tours sprinkled in. With a total population of under 2,000 people living there, it’s practically untouched, with the exception of a few resorts.

Bimini is actually made up of two islands, North and South Bimini. The cruise port is on North Bimini, and the airport is on South Bimini. You can take a quick ride between the two islands with the local ferry service at $8 per person each way.

Bimini Distance from Miami

The island is 62 miles south of Grand Bahama Island, 127 miles northwest of Nassau, 77 miles from West Palm Beach, and 58 miles from Port Everglades.

This island was called Virgin Voyages’ private resort destination . However, Virgin is only utilizing a beach and beach club on Bimini, which is open to other cruise passengers when a Virgin ship is not there.

Pier Location

The Resorts World Bimini Cruise Port is a new cruise port that can now hold the largest cruise ships, such as Royal Caribbean’s Oasis-class vessels (225,000 gross tons).

The ship docks in East Bimini. The pier was originally built for the now-defunct Bimini Superfast but was recently expanded to accommodate the world’s largest cruise vessels.

There’s a charm to the pier because it’s so new to major cruise lines, and it hasn’t been developed or overrun by Caribbean staple shops like Diamonds International.

Aside from cruise ships, high-speed ferry service from Balearia Caribbean also makes stops there, running routes from Fort Lauderdale to North Bimini Island.

Balearia Caribbean at North Bimini

Being right off the coast of South Florida, there isn’t much difference in the weather. You can expect the same weather as you would in Miami, Florida (so pack shorts!).

The temperatures range from around 60 degrees in the winter to 90 degrees in the dead of summer. Even with the humidity, the breeze off the ocean tends to make it feel a bit cooler.

The water temperatures average between 77 degrees in the winter and 87 degrees in the summer.

Legal tender is the Bahamian dollar ($BSD), but US currency is accepted and usually given as change in the Bahamas. If paying in cash, make sure to confirm you’re getting a change in US currency.

There are ATM machines around the resorts, but expect to pay a steep service fee to access them. Credit cards and digital payments are also accepted at most locations on the island, especially at the large resorts.

Getting Around

Even though the island is only seven miles long, you may want to find a way to get around.

A Resorts Worlds tram service makes select stops around the island and operates every 30 minutes. These trams have marked pick-up locations and will take you to different Resorts World properties from the cruise ship. (Note: they only operate between Resorts World properties.)

Anyone can use the Resorts World tram. Just keep in mind it will take you to one of their properties where you can go to a casino, beach, or eat.

Taxi rates will vary by where you want to go, but the common fare was $5 per person to most locations. The cruise pier is at the midway point of the island, so it’s equal distance to both the northern and southern areas.

By Golf Cart

A couple of golf cart rental companies on the island charge around $90 per day for a four-seater and $120 per day for a six-seater. With little traffic on the island, it’s an easy and stress-free way to explore on your own timetable.

If you’re sticking close to the pier, you can obviously walk to your destination. The Resorts World Hilton is about a 10-minute walk from the ship.

To explore beyond that, however, you’ll want to find a form of transportation — if only because of the heat!

As I mentioned earlier, one charm of Bimini is that it hasn’t been overdeveloped, especially when it comes to the area around the pier. As it becomes more popular in the coming years, that’s likely to change, but for now, it’s one of the things that makes this port so appealing.

A small market with a few shops is just south of the cruise pier. Otherwise, you’re limited to shopping at one of the Resorts World properties if you’re looking to pick up a souvenir.

While shopping for basic necessities, keep in mind that you are on an island with limited resources, so items in the resort gift shops tend to be on the pricey side as they all have to be imported from the mainland.

What To Do in Bimini

Cruise ship at Bimini

Bimini is primarily a beach destination that focuses on water activities like snorkeling, scuba diving, swimming with sharks, and jet skiing.

If you want to explore on your own, you can rent a golf cart or set out with food (and plenty of water to stay hydrated) and explore the island.

Cruise lines offer around a dozen shore excursions in Bimini, but if you’re looking for something a little different, we’ve listed some things to do in the area. If this is your first time visiting Bimini, here are some suggestions.

Local Beaches

Some of the quietest and best beaches in Bimini run together on the southwestern side of the island in Alice Town: Radio Beach, Blister Beach, and Spook Hill.

There is also a string of beaches north of the resort area’s cruise port. Keep in mind that you’ll be required to pay a fee if you’d like to use a sun chair, resort facilities, pool, or a lounger.

Beach Club 360

Typically sold by the cruise line, this new private beach package is good if you’re looking to spend a day at the beach. Located right next to Resorts World Bimini Beach, the stretch of beach has some of the clearest turquoise waters in the Bahamas.

The club has options to rent cabanas, umbrellas, and beach chairs. The price of varies depending on your cruise line and which add-ons you’d like. This premium beachfront complex has two lagoon pools, swim-up bars, DJs playing music, and plenty of beachfront property.

Beach Club 360

Explore a Shipwreck

You can set up a trip out to the SS Sapona wreck through one of the resorts. The World War I ship ran aground during a hurricane in 1926 and has remained ever since. The artificial reef is filled with sea life. This can be booked at Resorts World or in advance.

Historic Attractions

Bimini’s rich history is seen throughout the island, like the SS Sapona wreck we mentioned. You can explore some of the local histories at Bimini Museum, where you’ll learn about some of the famous folks who’ve made the island their home over the years (including former resident Ernest Hemingway).

There is no charge to enter the museum, but they do take donations.

Also relatively close to the pier is Dolphin House Museum, a three-story home made entirely out of recycled materials, including many items that washed up on the shore.

SS Sapona shipwreck bimini bahamas

If you’re a shark or marine life lover, you’ll love Bimini. Since the waters of the Bahamas are so warm, the Bimini Biological Field Station has a shark lab set up.

Visitors can sign up for a tour of the station and even participate in research or adopt a shark. And in case you’re concerned, the area is filled with lemon sharks, which aren’t aggressive and have zero recorded fatalities against humans.

(Note: The Shark Lab is currently closed because of the pandemic, but you can sign up for expeditions.)

You will be required to take a one-mile ferry ride to South Bimini to explore the Shark Lab.

Local Food and Drink Favorites

The local food favorite is the conch. You can order it prepared in a variety of ways, the most popular being fried conch fritters or ceviche. Conch can be ordered from almost any restaurant that serves seafood, and even a couple of roadside stands serve up this marine mollusk.

In speaking with the locals, there are two popular drinks that Bimini serves, Goombay Smash (four different types of rum, pineapple juice, and orange juice) and Rum Runners (assorted fruit juices, banana liquor, rum, and grenadine), which were made famous by the illegal smuggling of rum between Miami and Bimini.

Final Thoughts

Except for Carnival Corporation’s Half Moon Cay in the Bahamas, Bimini has the clearest and cleanest waters of any place where cruise ships stop in the region.

We did the Beach Club package ($64.99 per person through the cruise line) during our recent visit, spending the day going back and forth between the lagoon swimming pools and the beach.

The tram service was complimentary and took us directly from the beach to the cruise ship. The roads are bumpy, so hold tight when on the tram.

Overall, it was a memorable experience that I’d book again on another cruise to Bimini.

Bimini Cruise Port

Bimini Bahamas cruise port

The Resorts World Bimini Cruise Port is a new cruise port that accommodates the world’s largest cruise ships and vessels of all sizes. The cruise port is within walking distance of the Resorts World Bimini Complex.

Since this is a newer cruise port, the pier is charming and less developed. Unlike other Caribbean cruise destinations, which house popular cruise port shops including Diamonds International, this isn’t the case with Bimini. Instead, there are local shops to purchase souvenirs and crafts.

Bimini cruise port can accommodate two cruise ships at a time, making this island a nice change from busier ports of call. Cruise passengers can take a taxi, a shuttle service, or use a tour guide to visit the island.

What Cruise Passengers Need to Know About Bimini Cruise Port

Bimini Bahamas cruise port

The Bahamian dollar ($BSD) is the official currency for the Bahamas. However, U.S. currency is widely accepted and usually given as change in the Bahamas.

In Bimini, the majority of businesses and restaurants accept U.S. cast of credit cards. Furthermore, local vendors will accept U.S. money when you’re shopping for souvenirs.

English is the official language of the Bahamas. However, locals may speak Bahamianese or Creole. For the most part, everyone speaks and understands English in Bimini.

Since Bimini is located in the Bahamas, it operates on Eastern Standard Time. Furthermore, the cruise ship’s time will be the same as the time on land.

Typically, when you visit Bimini, the temperatures range from 60 degrees in the winter to 90 degrees in the summer. However, the breeze from the ocean makes it feel a bit cooler.

The water temperatures vary between 77 degrees in the middle of winter and 87 degrees in the summer.

Getting Around Bimini

Although Bimini is only 7 miles long, there are a few ways to get around the island.

Here are a few ways you can get around Bimini:

Resorts World Tram

Bimini Bahamas cruise port

The Resorts Worlds tram service operates every 30 minutes and makes several stops around the Island. In fact there’s a stop right within short walking distance at the cruise port.

The tram is completely free and available for anyone to use. However, keep in mind that it will only take you to the Resort World properties, where you can visit the casino, beach, resorts, and restaurants.

You’ll find the free pick-up location right outside your cruise ship. It’s easy to find the pick-up location, and many people use the tram when visiting Bimini.

When you visit Bimini, there will be taxi services available. The taxi rates vary depending on where you want to go, but the common fare is between $5-$10 per person. Since the cruise port is the midway point of the island, the southern and northern parts are equal distances from the pier.

By Golf Cart

There are a few golf cart rental companies that operate in Bimini. They charge approximately $90 per day for a four-seater and $120 for a six-seater. Golf cart rentals are a great way to explore the beautiful island.

Tip: I have heard from other cruisers that there may be some room to negotiate prices.

If you want to stay close to the cruise port, you can always walk to your destination. Bimini is a small island and is very walkable!

The Resorts World Hilton resort is a 10-15 minute walk from the cruise ship. Bring water if you plan to walk because it can be very hot in Bimini.

Where to eat in Bimini

No doubt, anytime you are in the Bahamas, you need to eat Conch. It’s pronounced (CONK) and it is a local favorite. A conch is a sea mollusk that can be eaten in numerous ways.

The most popular are conch fritters (breaded and fried) or Conch Salad (raw, cured with lime, and served with bell peppers and other seasonings. It’s a bit chewy and not overly “fishy” and you should definitely give it a try.

When I was in Bimini, I asked a few locals where to eat, and these are the recommendations I received.

Big Mike’s Fresh Conch Salad & Grill – located in Alicetown, not open on the weekends.

Bimini Big Johns- Also located in Alice Town, closed on Mondays

Ediths Pizza – Located in Bailey Town, open until 8 every day

No matter what you decide to do in Bimini, you will want to have strong sunscreen. The sun here is no joke. Be sure to always use only Reef Safe sunscreen products to protect this beautiful environment.

Even reef-safe sunscreen can be harmful to native habitats, so I always recommend wearing a rash guard to protect your arms and back. This reduces the amount of sunscreen you need to apply.

You can rent a golf cart to explore the island, or there is a tram if you are staying at the Hilton that takes you to the beach. You can also hire a taxi for a set price. It was $5 USD per person for anywhere we needed to go.

I must warn you though… the taxis can be a bit scary. The roads are narrow, there are cars parked on either side, and the drivers just GO. It is an adventure for sure. Buckle up, lol.

You are going to LOVE Bimini. The water is gorgeous, the weather is amazing, and the beaches are to die for. Have fun!

Hey Dominic! You’re right, the dolphin house looks like an awesome place to visit. I’m bummed I didn’t know about it when we were there. I’ll add it to the post for sure. Thanks for sharing!

You forgot to mention a visit to the Dolphin House Museum in Alice Town which is right off of Radio Beach. It’s the most unique and artistic location in Bimini if not all of the Bahamas and a must-see by anyone visiting Bimini. See the link below for more details on this amazing tourist attraction.

Bahamas cruise guide: Best itineraries, planning tips and things to do

Ashley Kosciolek

If you've cruised or are planning to cruise to someplace warm, it's likely the Bahamas will pop up on your itinerary -- and for good reason. Found on Bahamas-exclusive sailings and Caribbean voyages, Bahamian ports offer plenty of sun and sand, as well as opportunities for shopping, gambling and more.

The islands appeal to both new and seasoned cruisers. Their proximity to Florida makes them quick, easy and affordable to reach by ship, whether for a quick overnight trip or a call as part of a longer voyage.

Read on for all you need to know when planning a sailing that includes the Bahamas -- one of the cruise industry's most popular destinations.

Why cruise to the Bahamas?

bimini vs nassau cruise

In the Bahamas, the people are as warm as the weather, offering greetings and friendly smiles at every turn. The main draws, however, are the beaches and bright blue waters, which offer plenty of places to snorkel and scuba dive or to work on your tan while sipping a cocktail or two.

One of the best reasons to visit is that the islands are close to Florida -- the cruise capital of the world. The Bahamas are frequented by most major cruise lines and show up on a large number of itineraries, from two-nighters to longer voyages.

The takeaway: Passengers are spoiled for choice. If you want to travel to the Bahamas by cruise ship, you can easily find a cruise line, length and price point to meet your needs.

The Bahamas is a great place to visit, as long as you set your expectations. Nassau, which is the largest port and the country's capital city, is often crowded with cruise ships. Locals will approach you with offers for everything from taxi rides to hair braiding. It can be overwhelming, so be prepared to politely decline if you're not interested.

When do cruises go to the Bahamas?

bimini vs nassau cruise

Cruise ships call on the Bahamas all year. However, midwinter is generally the best time to go. Prices are cheaper, there are fewer passengers because children are in school, and the weather isn't as sweltering as it is in the summer. Plus, wave season -- when cruise lines offer some of the best deals you'll see all year -- runs from January through March, so you could snag a last-minute bargain.

Weather in the Bahamas is generally mild, with temperatures ranging from the high 70s to low 90s Fahrenheit. As expected, the hottest months are found during the summer, with lower temperatures during the winter.

Best Bahamas itineraries

bimini vs nassau cruise

Islands in the Bahamas are found on lots of itineraries, ranging from short, Bahamas-specific sailings to longer Eastern and Western Caribbean voyages.

Bahamas-only cruises tend to be anywhere from two to five nights, and they visit a port or two in the Bahamas, as well as a private island (see below).

Eastern and Western Caribbean sailings usually start at five nights and can run up to two weeks in length, but most usually last about a week.

On those voyages, you're likely to see a mix ports. In the Eastern Caribbean, expect to visit a combination of Puerto Rico, St. Maarten, the U.S. Virgin Islands (St. Thomas, St. John and St. Croix) and the French West Indies (Martinique, St. Barts, Guadeloupe and St. Martin). If you go the western route, Belize, Honduras and Jamaica are common stops.

Additionally, cruisers can find Bahamas stops on sailings that depart from non-Florida ports on the U.S. East Coast, such as New York and Baltimore. They are often seven or eight days in length and include calls on Florida and the Bahamas. Some also feature southern ports like Charleston.

Best Bahamas cruise lines

bimini vs nassau cruise

Due to the Bahamas' popularity, proximity to the U.S. East Coast and the number of ships it can accommodate at one time, most major cruise lines visit the islands there.

You'll mainly find sailings with the "big eight" brands -- Carnival Cruise Line, Celebrity Cruises, Disney Cruise Line, Holland America, MSC Cruises, Norwegian Cruise Line, Princess Cruises and Royal Caribbean.

One unique outlier is Bahamas Paradise Cruise Line, which exclusively operates two-night voyages back and forth between Palm Beach, Florida, and Freeport, Bahamas. The cruise line also partners with a land-based resort, allowing passengers to extend their vacations on land in the Bahamas before returning on the ship several days later.

Additionally, BPCL has joined forces with Jimmy Buffett's Margaritaville to offer Margaritaville at Sea cruises , rebranding and renaming its sole ship -- Grand Classica -- to Paradise.

Because of how crowded and frenetic the main Bahamian ports can be, luxury lines tend to stay away. There are a few exceptions, though, such as Lindblad Expeditions. The line operates sailings to some of the Bahamas' Out Islands, which are too tiny for larger, more mainstream vessels to reach.

Things to do in the Bahamas

bimini vs nassau cruise

As you would expect from a warm-weather destination, outdoor pursuits are the most popular. Cruise passengers can walk to the nearest beach to sunbathe, swim, snorkel or scuba dive, or book a banana boat, parasailing or party boat excursion.

For fun, affordable souvenirs, shopping abounds at local shops and in Nassau's massive straw market, found on Bay Street. Just make sure you don't buy from the first vendor you see, as many stalls offer the same wares. You might find a cheaper price if you wait or if you bargain for a better deal.

If you're more the gambling type, head to Paradise Island, a quick taxi ride from Nassau, which boasts the famous Atlantis resort. Venture indoors to play table games or try your luck at the slot machines in the resort's casino, or purchase a day pass to use its outdoor pools and water slides.

For fabulous food, ask a local to point you in the direction of their favorite restaurant, and head off the beaten path to try some conch fritters (fried conch meat) and peas with rice. For dessert, don't miss the semi-sweet bread-style Johnny cakes.

Best Bahamas cruise ports

bimini vs nassau cruise

The Bahamas has two main cruise ports: Nassau on New Providence Island and Freeport on Grand Bahama Island. Nassau offers plenty to see and do within a short walking distance from the port. However, Freeport requires passengers to book a shore excursion or take a taxi to most attractions.

Other Bahamas stops include Bimini, which is less frequented, and cruise line private islands, which can only be accessed via cruise ship.

Historic Nassau , the capital of the Bahamas, is the cruise industry's most trafficked cruise port. It's bustling and busy, and it can feel overwhelming to travelers visiting for the first time, especially when there are several ships docked at the same time.

But, brightly colored buildings, expansive beaches and ample opportunities for shopping and dining quickly make up for the chaos.

Nassau is also a port teeming with culture. Formerly a haven for pirates, the city is now a history buff's dream, offering easy access to monuments and buildings that were once the stomping grounds of swashbuckling scallywags.

Freeport has a more relaxed vibe than Nassau. The slower pace of Grand Bahama Island, where Freeport is located, lends itself to lazy beach days and casual strolls through town for passengers in search of the perfect souvenir.

Water sports abound, and the clear, bright blue water is exactly what you'd expect from an island paradise.

Unfortunately, Freeport has been hit by several tropical storms and major hurricanes over the years. Although it's a lovely port to visit, you can expect to see reminders, even years later, as construction projects are abandoned and the island struggles to rebuild.

The island chain of Bimini, which is part of the Bahamas, is also home to a cruise port. Fewer ships call there than call at Nassau or Freeport. Apart from beaches and resort-style experiences, there isn't much to do.

The port was thrust into the spotlight when Virgin Voyages developed its Beach Club at Bimini on part of a property operated by Resorts World. When Virgin ships are in port, the only people who have access to the Beach Club are Virgin passengers. Cruisers who call on Bimini with other lines can purchase day passes as long as a Virgin ship is not docked that day.

Private islands

bimini vs nassau cruise

Six of the cruise industry's seven private islands are located in the Bahamas. These carefully curated swaths of land can only be visited if you're sailing on a ship that has access.

When you're ashore, you can expect clean facilities, pristine beaches, shopping opportunities, free buffet lunches (usually barbecue) and a variety of carefully controlled water-sports-centric shore excursions. Some of the larger, more developed private islands also boast water parks, horseback riding, zip lines and pools.

Private cabanas, villas and bungalows are also offered, but they come at a premium and usually book up quickly. Some are even reserved for cruisers booked in suite accommodations on their ships.

When to book a Bahamas cruise

bimini vs nassau cruise

Since the Bahamas is a year-round destination and lots of ships call there, supply is plentiful. That means prices tend to be more affordable, particularly for shorter Bahamas-only voyages.

For additional savings, consider booking your sailing in the first quarter of each year during " wave season ," when cruise lines offer fare discounts and other added-value perks like free Wi-Fi and beverage packages, discounted airfare or onboard credit for things like spa treatments, shore excursions or dining in extra-fee restaurants. Also keep an eye out for Black Friday deals toward the end of each year.

You might also be able to take advantage of resident rates (if you live in Florida), military discounts or kids sail free promotions.

What to bring on a Bahamas cruise

bimini vs nassau cruise

Wondering what to pack ? For any cruise, you can't go wrong with resort-casual clothing and something for formal night if you'd like to participate. You'll also need underwear, toiletries, pajamas and footwear, as well as any travel documents required to board and clear immigration and customs.

For the Bahamas specifically, you'll want to prepare for warm, sunny weather by bringing a bathing suit and cover-up; flip-flops or sandals; and sunglasses, a hat and sunscreen to protect yourself during time outdoors. For those not heading to the beach, sundresses or shorts with T-shirts or tank tops are suitable attire.

If you plan to shop while ashore, most places do accept credit cards, but you might want to bring cash. U.S. dollars are accepted in the Bahamas, so there's no need to exchange currency.

Bottom line

bimini vs nassau cruise

If you cruise, it's almost certain you'll visit the Bahamas at some point in your travels. Although it can be crowded, the experience is an enjoyable one.

If you're looking for a fun warm-weather destination that offers plenty of beach time, active diversions, history and culture, shopping, gambling and excellent food, you won't be disappointed with a call on this popular cruise region.

Bimini Cruise Port Guide: Everything You Need To Know

Robert Marmion

Bimini is a new port in the Bahamas that should quickly become a favorite of cruisers for its easy access to beaches and activities. There are however a few tricks to getting the most for your money in Bimini.

Arrival at the Pier in Bimini Bahamas

Your ship will dock at the pier and you’ll be able to walk right into the port. It is a flat and wide pier, with plenty of room for all passengers.

Bimini Bahamas Pier

At the end of the pier you’ll come to a parking lot that acts as a pickup station for the island tram, which is run by Resorts World. The tram is free and will take you to most of the Resorts World properties and activities. You should plan on riding the tram.

Bimini Resorts World tram

You could also walk across the bridge into town for direct access to Kayak Beach, Fisherman’s Village, golf cart rentals, and taxis, but the tram also stops at Kayak Beach and Fisherman’s village. Unless you really just like walking in the heat, take the tram to one of those stops if you are wanting to go there.

Many people were making that walk, likely because it looks like the tram is only for passengers on shore excursions, but we confirmed with staff that it is free for everyone.

bimini vs nassau cruise

Kayak Beach Bimini

Kayak Beach Bimini

The first stop on the tram is Kayak Beach. The water here is not as good as the upcoming beaches, and there is no reason to get off here unless you just want to get to the beach as quickly as possible. You could also pick up a taxi at this stop. As noted by the lack of people in the picture, there are better beaches to come!

Fisherman’s Village

Bimini Fisherman's Village

The 2nd tram stop is Fisherman’s Village, which is mostly shopping. If you’d like to get a few gifts from the Bimini Cruise Port, this is the place to do it.

Resorts World Bimini Beach

The third stop for the tram is Resorts World Bimini Beach. We booked a shore excursion, which is basically a day pass to the resort for $39 on our cruise ship. Included in that price was a welcome drink, but no lunch. Many people will get off at this stop as it is the same stop as Beach 360.

bimini vs nassau cruise

Resorts World is amazing, with crystal clear water and resort style pools, food and restrooms. It is everything you could ask for in a day at the beach. Deck chairs and umbrellas were provided by the pool at no cost and there was no trouble finding an open spot as the resort is large.

If you are looking for the best beach and want access to facilities, this is the place you should go.

Resorts World Bimini Beach

There was an option on our cruise to book the resort with lunch included for an extra $25. The price seemed high and this was confirmed by looking at the menu once we got there. All meals were $15, so it was a $10 markup by the cruise ship on lunch. Skip the included lunch and just buy what you would like when you get there.

Bimini Beach Lunch Menu

Resorts World Bimini Beach has two resort style pools, one for adults only and one for families. We found neither to be crowded and there were great places to sit all around.

Resorts World Bimini Pool

Another option you might be tempted by is the pool cabana. These seemed like they were really overpriced at $399, we didn’t see anyone in them the entire time we were there.

Your excursion will include a welcome drink, and you do need to pick it up on arrival, but don’t get too excited about it. The voucher is not good for any drink you want at the bar.

bimini vs nassau cruise

Bimini Cruise Port Best Free Beach

The best free option is Paradise Beach, which is located directly next to the Resorts World Beach. In fact while at Resorts World Bimini Beach we walked up to Paradise Beach because it was much less crowded.

Paradise Beach Bimini

To reach Paradise Beach, get off at the stop after Resorts World. You’ll have access to a free beautiful beach, and food trucks, but no resort amenities. The main downfall to this beach is there is nowhere to wash off the saltwater after going in the water, but an excursion here would be completely free.

Our cruise was offering an excursion to Paradise Beach with a snorkel for $75 per person. The beach and tram are free though, so you are basically renting a snorkel for $75!

Where you go on Bimini will come down to if you want restrooms and a resort freshwater pool, and if you are willing to pay $39 for that. If you want that, go to Resorts World Bimini Beach, if not, go to Paradise Beach for free.

Resorts World Casino

On the way back to the ship the tram will stop at Resorts World Casino (and Fisherman’s Village again). Get off here if you’d like to play in a casino during your Bimini Cruise Port stop.

Bimini – Bahamas

Last updated on February 25th, 2024 at 12:35 pm

Discover the hidden gem of Bimini in the Bahamas. Dive into crystal-clear turquoise waters, swim with wild dolphins, or explore vibrant coral reefs teeming with marine life. Visit the legendary Bimini Road, believed to be the remnants of the Lost City of Atlantis. Relax on white sandy beaches, savor Bahamian delicacies, and immerse yourself in the laid-back island vibes that make Bimini a true paradise.

The weather in Bimini is subtropical with pleasant temperatures year round. The average summer temps are in the 80°F and the winter sees temperatures of 70°F. The Bahamas rainy season runs from May to October, with June and October being the wettest months.

The currency used is the Bahamian dollar but U.S. currency is accepted and also given as change. ATMs around the resort have high service fees, so avoid them if you can. Credit cards are accepted at a few businesses like Bimini Undersea, Resorts World Bimini and Edith’s Pizza.

Wireless Internet:

There are several restaurants and businesses in Alice Town that have WiFi, and most are free. They can be password protected, and you are expected to purchase something from the business.

Bahamian Creole and English are spoken on the island, so there is not usually any difficulty conversing with locals or with vendors.

Where You Dock in Bimini – Bahamas

Formerly there had been a tender boat system that met cruise ships that would dock offshore and bring visitors to the island but The Resorts World Bimini Cruise Port is a new cruise terminal that can hold the largest cruise ships such as the Oasis.

There is a wide pier that has plenty of room for all passengers that choose to disembark.  There is a customs and immigration service at the pier also, but other than that, you’ll notice it isn’t as overdeveloped as other cruise ports, so no Diamond’s International (at least not yet). The great thing is that there’s only room for one ship to be docked at a time, so it never feels overcrowded.

Within the Resorts World property there is a beach club, spa, casino, restaurants and Fisherman’s Village, a shopping area.

The dock is located north of the island’s main settlement – Alice Town – where you will find some restaurants and shops. If you wish to visit, it’s not walkable from the port, so you’ll need a form of transportation.

Getting Around Bimini – Bahamas

The Resorts World Hilton is about a 10 minute walk from the pier but if you’re staying on the Resorts World property, then there is a complementary tram that travels throughout the resort. The walk to the beach club is about 20 minutes.

Getting outside Resorts World on foot isn’t feasible and unless you are in Alice Town or Bailey Town, walking around North Bimini would be a challenge since places in Bimini are miles apart.

The main rental transportation on North Bimini is golf carts. You can rent them by the hour or the day right at Resorts World. If you take the tram to Paradise Beach, you can rent a golf cart there for $60/day. Beware that you will be sharing the single lane roads with cars, bikes and people. The roads in Bimini are about 1.5 times wider than single lane roads in the U.S., but there are no middle divider lanes. Driving is on the left side of the road.

Bike rentals are also available at Resorts World where you can rent a bike by the hour, half-day or full-day. There are no sidewalks in Bimini, so you will share the road.

There are only a few roads in Bimini, and a ferry is the only way to get between the North and South Islands. It is $10 pp each way.

There is taxi service on the island, but there are no ridesharing services or apps. To secure a taxi, you will need to flag one down on the street (they accept cash only), get a shop to telephone one, or request a dispatch via the radio channel (VHF 68) that is dedicated to taxis. The fare to most common locations is $5 per person.

The Resorts Worlds tram operates on a 30 minute rotating schedule and will take you from the ship, but the service operates between Resorts World properties only.

Shopping In Bimini – Bahamas

As previously mentioned, Bimini isn’t as overdeveloped as other Bahamian or Caribbean tourist locales, so you won’t find the name-brand stores, but there are unique, local items to discover.

Just a point to note, since it’s a small island and everything needs to be imported, products will likely be more costly than you will find in the U.S..

Fisherman’s Village

Located at Resorts World, this is set up to be charming with various shops, cafes and dockmaster’s office.

Access Bahamas Bimini

Best place for souvenirs. Not all items are made by locals, but if you are looking for something to remember your visit, this is the place.

Bimini Craft Center & Straw Market

In Alice Town, this craft center has original straw, wood carvings and craft work of the islanders. Set up in stalls, you will be able to find tie-dye apparel and food items, including the famous Bimini coconut bread. There is also WiFi access and restrooms onsite.

Trev Inn Marketplace has a large selection of groceries and local produce.

The Chic Store

If you are looking for a bathing suit, flip flops or water bottles, you will be able to find them here.

Dining In Bimini – Bahamas

As you would expect on an island in the Bahamas, Bimini has an abundance of seafood options. Restaurants are very casual and you can expect fresh seafood and Bahamian flavors.

Conch, a small sea snail, is a favorite that you will find at most of the eateries that have seafood. Conch is salty, but does not have a strong taste. It can be similar to crab or crayfish.

The two most popular drinks on the islands are Goombay Smash and Rum Runners. The Smash has four different types of rum, pineapple juice and orange juice. The Runners are an assortment of fruit juices, banana liquor, rum and grenadine.

Here are a few of the choices for dining you will have on Bimini:

Hilton at Resorts World Bimini

There are 10 restaurants, cafes and bars in the Hilton including four diverse fine dining venues.

Stuart’s Conch Stand

This beachside wooden hut is a favorite with locals and serves mainly seafood.

Edith’s Pizza

Edith makes lobster and chicken-conch pizza to name a few. This is all outdoor seating.

Scants Jerk

While this looks like a shack, it has amazing BBQ and smoked meats. Jerk chicken and pork, and smoked lobster are just a few of the items served here.

Sherry’s Paradise Beach Bar

This small family-run kitchen is said to have the best conch fritters on the island.

Things To Do in Bimini – Bahamas

As mentioned, the cruise terminal is located in Resorts World, so there are resort-style amenities such as a beach club, spa and casino available for a fee – usually the ship’s excursions will have a few options for Resorts World.

Swim With The Sharks

If you would like a unique experience, you could head to Bimini Big Game Club Resort & Marina and dive in a cage while the sharks swim around you.

Visit the Wreckage of the SS Sapona

Although it never saw action in WW1, the SS Spano was commissioned by U.S. President Wilson. After the war it was sold for scrap, turned into a casino and supply ship and was run aground during a hurricane. Just a little ways off-shore, this wreckage is a great place to snorkel or scuba dive.

Rainbow Reef – Bahamas

This protected marine sanctuary has depths that range from 15 to 25 feet, making it ideal for snorkeling.

Hit The Beaches

There are numerous beaches on Bimini, near the Bimini Cruise Port. Located on the southwestern side of North Bimini behind Alice Town, there are Radio beach, Blister beach, and Spook Hill. There are also beaches to the north of the Bimini cruise port.

Dolphin House Museum

This building is made of different materials that were collected from all over the islands. Open since 1993, it is an interesting site that is covered in a mosaic of shells, glass, and coins.

Bimini Brown Charters

These charters are experts on the waters around Bimini. If you are wanting a private charter, sport fishing or snorkeling excursions, they have been operating for over thirty years.

Bimini Nature Hiking Trail

There is lots to learn about the ecology, wildlife, and history of the Bimini island. Led by a professional tour guide, you’ll see birds, iguanas and the Bimini Boa on this tour.

What are the most popular activities on Bimini?

What cruise ships can dock at the bimini pier, when is the best time of year to visit bimini island, how to get from south bimini to north bimini, is bimini a private island for virgin voyages, does bimini, bahamas have an airport, what airlines fly to bimini, bahamas, do you need a passport when traveling to bimini, are prices in bimini expensive, where to stay in bimini, bahamas, what’s the weather like in bimini.

Bimini is 54 miles from Miami

The small island chain is about 54 miles directly east of Miami, Florida .  It’s also the western most district of the Bahamas. Mainland United States is actually closer to Bimini than the capital city, Nassau, which is over 130 miles to the southeast .

The proximity to the US allows for some to make day trips to the islands by way of high speed ferries. More on that later.

Bimini is only about 9 square miles in totality. Two main islands make up most of the island chain: North Bimini and South Bimini.

North Bimini is 7 miles long and only about 750 feet wide.  South Bimini is about 3 miles long and about half a mile wide.

The water around the islands is very shallow at 20-30 feet in most places. To the west, between Miami and Bimini the Gulf Stream flows northward through water 6,000 feet deep, and this brings a variety of fish to the area.

There’s a reason this island of the Bahamas is so popular for sport fishing. The marine life is diverse around Bimini.

This small island has a rich history waiting to be explored. From its early days as a haven for pirates to its current status as an up-and-coming paradise, Bimini is sure to amaze you with its beauty and culture.

Known by locals as “ The Gateway to the Bahamas ,” Bimini was first settled by indigenous Lucayan people and still retains its Lucayan name “Bimini” which means “small islands” .

The island originally was attractive mainly due to its plentiful fish population and peaceful atmosphere – traits which still define Bimini today.

A world-famous vacation spot for vacationers, the island earned its fame through the contributions of journalist and author Ernest Hemingway .

Hemingway’s many accomplishments, including the two novels “Old Man and the Sea” and “Islands in the Stream,” were inspired by his visits to Bimini .

Bimini is also known as the Big Fish Fishing Capital of the World because it has some of the greatest ocean fishing in the world.

gateway to the bahamas, Bimini islands

On July 4th, 2021 Bimini welcomed its first cruise ship into the newly finished Resorts World Bimini Cruise Port , the official name for the cruise port on North Bimini island.

The single-pier port was developed by Resorts World Bimini.  It is just one of three ports in the Bahamas that is situated on a non-private island, along with Freeport and Nassau.

With a population of only about 2,000 full time residents, Bimini Bahamas is an exotic destination not yet overrun by tourism and commercialism. You won’t find a Diamonds International in this vacation spot. Beaches are clean and open.

Quiet streets have more golf carts and bicycles than actual cars . And with only one cruise ship docked at the pier at one time, the cruise passenger population is at least slightly limited.

There are no bridges between North and South Bimini . However, there are ferries that will take you back and forth so you can explore some of the activities on our list below.

I also recommend renting a golf cart for easy transportation on your own. It costs $60 for the entire day and travel on the island is very laid back and simple. Just remember to drive on the left hand side of the road. Queens Highway is the main road through North Bimini.

Most cruise lines offer an excursion to Resorts World Bimini which has a casino and beach club. The resort provides the free tram service to the resort and other drop off locations. No ticket is needed. You can walk out of the port area from the cruise ship, but it’s a fairly long walk.

The first tram stop is Resorts World Bimini. The 2nd stop on the tram is Paradise Beach where you can rent loungers, umbrellas, kayaks, and the golf carts mentioned above.

beach club by Virgin Voyages from above

Ultimate List of Things to Do and See in Bimini Bahamas

1. beach club.

When visiting Bimini with Virgin Voyages, the Beach Club is included at no extra charge.  Virgin partnered with World Resorts to offer the Beach Club as the cruise line’s “private island destination”. The Beach Club has two swimming pools and an exclusive private area for guests staying in Rock Star suites.

A buffet lunch is served at the Beach Club and soft drinks are included, just like on Virgin ships.

When visiting Bimini with other cruise lines, there is a charge to get in the Beach Club and you will also have to pay for food and basic beverages. There is a free tram that will take you from the pier right to the Beach Club.

2. See the underwater, mystical Bimini Wall (Bimini Road)

For a truly remarkable underwater experience that comes with some controversy, check out a dive to the Bimini Wall. This underwater rock formation, sometimes called the Bimini Road has had many conspiracy theories as to its origin.

Is it an ancient road to the lost city of Atlantis?  Was it caused by a tsunami? Man-made or natural, the large rectangular limestone slabs have inspired all kinds of theories. The structure is about half a mile long and is 18 feet below the water.

3. Experience the best beaches of Bimini

This is the perfect destination for those wanting a relaxing beach day. Use our list for the best sandy beaches in Bimini, or you can just rent a golf cart and drive around the small island to find them yourself.

You will find some great beach locations at the south end of the north island. The waters of Bimini are truly remarkable.

One of the many white sandy beaches in Bimini

Below are some of the highest rated beaches in the Bimini islands. These beaches never feel overcrowded, but some are more secluded than others.

  • Radio Beach – Probably the most popular beach due to its beauty and easy access, Radio Beach is very close to Alice Town. It’s the only public beach on the islands to have public amenities as bathrooms and food vendors.
  • Tiki Hut Beach – With a 2 mile-long stretch of white sand, Tiki Hut Beach offers a great getaway. Palm trees and vegetation provide are all around, helping make the beach on South Bimini island seem even more secluded.
  • Porgy Bay Beach – This is a cozy, quaint beach in North Bimini just south of Resorts World Bimini in Bailey Town.
  • Spook Hill – Shallow and calm waters can be found at Spook Hill beach, and it’s one of the most popular beaches in Bimini for good reason. The name comes from the proximity of the beach to a local cemetery but don’t let that scare you away from the soft as talc sand.
  • Blister Beach – A lovely beach in North Bimini known for its calmer waters and great snorkeling, this beach also goes by the name Bimini Bay Beach.
  • Resort World Bimini Beach – Perfect for a resort style beach, this area is a 4.5 acre beach with room for up to 2,000 people.
  • Local Cays with great beach spots – If you feel like getting a little further away from the main Bimini islands you can check out some incredible local cays. Turtle Rocks, Piquet Rocks, Holm Cay, North Cat Cay (Honeymoon Harbour), and South Cat Cay are just a few local beaches to get away from it all.

4. Go on a shark dive with Bimini Bull Run

You will get up close an personal with Caribbean bull sharks on this Bimini island excursion. The number of sharks you see while on this cage dive is really quite impressive. Shark fishing is actually illegal in the Bahamas and these creatures thrive in the crystal clear waters.

All you need is a diving mask and a belt and you can plunge into the shark-infested waters for a very unique experience. The sharks are given scraps of food all around the cage and the visibility in these waters is second-to-none.

5. Explore the wreckage of the S.S. Sapona

S.S. Sapona’s wreckage has remained in place for almost 100 years, after the concrete ship ran aground during a hurricane in 1926.

The ship was originally commissioned by President Woodrow Wilson and was built to transport troops during the first World War, although it never did so.  The vessel was made out of concrete since steel was not as readily available at the time.

This popular dive site is perfect for snorkeling as well, as the wreck sits in just 15 feet of water. The shipwreck site was used as a bombing target for United States fighter pilots during World War II , so the ship shows significant damage.

But divers are still able to see inside the concrete hull of the ship and find many varieties of marine life around the area. History lovers and diving enthusiasts alike will find something to love at the S.S. Sapona wreckage site.

6. Visit Rainbow Reef and Tuna Alley

These two amazing dive sites are part of the same reef system off the coast of North Cat Cay . A short boat ride south from the main Bimini islands to the Bimini Cays will get you there, and you can explore both the same day.

  • Rainbow Reef is one of the most colorful (hence the name) and shallow reefs in Bimini. Accessible by boat, the maximum depth of the reef is about 20 feet. As part of a protected marine park over 100 species of fish can be found in the area. If you decide to dive or snorkel to the deepest parts of the reef you may find sea turtles and nurse sharks that frequent the reef. Typically this area is teeming with marine life and there is an abundance of coral to admire.
  • Tuna Alley has been called by some divers “the best dive site in the Caribbean”. An underwater wall over 100 feet tall inspires awe in most guests who view this site. This is another reef right near North Cat Cay. There are several canyons under the water that are perfect for exploring. The water is pristine as well, as the Gulf Stream’s current helps wash out any debris and keep the seas looking “ Bimini blue” . The name of this scuba diving site was inspired by the numerous tuna that can often be found near the reef.

7. Explore Victory Reef

Victory Reef is also teeming with life and divers can expect to find fish, sea turtles, lobsters and sharks in the area. Most recommend the site for drift diving, as you can drift along with the marine life and enjoy the tall, vibrant, and abundant coral along this beautiful reef. The reef is located south of North Cat Cay , which is south of the Bimini islands and it’s depth runs from 30 – 80 feet.

8. Tour Dolphin House Museum

For $10 per person , you can check out a very unique museum in Bimini. Built completely from recycled materials, this enchanting building houses eclectic mosaics that reflect the islands history. Perhaps the door on the building says it best, “Welcome to Bimini’s most unique and artistic structure.  Built by Ashley Saunders . A bridge between human and dolphin consciousness. A work in progress since 1993.”

As the museum truly is a work in progress you can expect new things to be added all the time. Keep in mind the museum is also the artist’s home, so it’s more of residence than an exhibit. Still, everywhere you turn in the Dolphin House you will find something unique, built by hand, and made from recycled materials . There are 3 levels of the building to explore with a roof top terrace that overlooks the beautiful water.

9. Stop by the legendary Fountain of Youth

According to legend, Arawak Indians in the area told the explorer Juan Ponce de Leon about a Fountain of Youth in Bimini. In 1513 the ambitious explorer set out to find Bimini but failed to find the islands or the fountain. Then he went on to discover the Gulf Stream and Florida instead.

Today there is a 1,000 year-old well carved out of limestone rock that locals refer to as the Fountain of Youth. The well is fairly deep and there is fresh water way down at the bottom. As far as it’s healing properties…. I will just say that being in the calming atmosphere of Bimini is enough to keep one young.

10. Hilton at Resort World Bimini

Hilton at Resort World Bimini is a beautiful resort. It offers an array of amenities and activities such as a private beach, swimming pool, spa, fitness center, restaurants, parasailing, glass-bottom boat tours, tennis courts and more.

Guests can take advantage of complimentary shuttles to the nearby marina or enjoy sailing excursions on crystal clear waters. From deep sea fishing trips to snorkeling and scuba diving expeditions, there is plenty to do around this stunning property. There’s also a casino inside if you feel like leaving some donations to the 750-acre resort .

11. Visit Bimini Big Game Club Resort and Marina

This resort has been in its current location in Alice Town since 1947 and is the perfect destination for sports fisherman looking for a big-game fishing experience. While the name of the resort kind of says it all, Bimini Big Game Club Resort has a plethora of activities to take part in.

Amenities include a pool, game area with pool and ping pong, a dive shop, several restaurants, massage services and more. There are hotel and dive packages if you plan on spending the night, or you can book one of their Bimini Dive Safaris to check out Hammerheads and dolphins. Guided fishing excursions from the resort are offered for both new and experienced anglers.  Bimini holds multiple world records for fish caught in the area, so you never know what you might find.

12. Visit Neal Watson’s Bimini Scuba Center

Since the scuba center is located in Bimini Big Game Club Resort I could have just put it in the same category, but I didn’t want those looking exclusively for diving experiences to miss this one. Neal Watson is President of the Bahamas Dive Association and is world-renown for his diving savvy. Oh, and Neal is also Director of Dive Operations for Guy Harvey Outpost so he knows what he’s doing.

Today the scuba center is operated by father and son. There are over 20 dive sites that have buoys marking their location. They are placed and maintained by commercial dive operators. If you want to see any of the reefs or dive sites already mentioned in this article and want a pro to show you the ropes, this is a great starting point.

Because of Bimini’s proximity to the Gulf Stream it is not uncommon for visitors to see spotted dolphins, Loggerhead turtles, Southern stingrays, nurse sharks, and barracudas, along with numerous kingfish and tropical fish.

13. Take a Boat Charter

Whether you want to charter a boat in Bimini for some deep sea fishing, spear fishing, snorkeling, or just some sightseeing around the beautiful Bimini islands, you can easily find a charter boat to take you out.

There are many companies in Bimini that offer fishing charters, and they range from private boats to larger vessels with experienced captains and crew. Many of the boats also come equipped with amenities like air-conditioning, cabins, and full kitchens. You can book a charter for a half-day or full day trip depending on your needs, and prices vary based on the size of the boat, the length of your trip, and other special requests.

Before booking any charter make sure to inquire about their safety record and what type of insurance coverage is provided by the company. That way you’ll have peace of mind knowing that you’re in good hands while out on the water. One of the more popular charter services is Bimini Brown Charters . They have been doing this for a long time and really know the area.

11 Things to Know before your Bimini Cruise

bimini vs nassau cruise

Taking a Bimini cruise in the Bahamas is one of the regions most popular attractions. Laying your toes in its white sand beaches and bright blue, sparkling waters is a pure joy in life.

The Bahamas is an island country made up of over 700 islands in the tropics just off the coast of Florida. Because of its proximity and relative ‘exoticness’ when compared to the United States, many American travelers visit the Bahamas and a large part of the Bahamian economy thrives off tourist dollars. It is known as a resort destination with renowned accommodations like Resorts World Bimini which many people see on their Bimini cruise. You have likely heard about Resorts World by now. There are a lot of other things about Bimini you may not have known, though. We will cover these below.

About Bimini Bahamas

Being the closest Bahamian island to the United States means Bimini is one of the most visited. Known as the gateway to the Bahamas, it sees many returning tourists every year. Even Ernest Hemingway is said to have enjoyed his frequent visits to the island. Matter of fact, with a population of just shy of 2,000, most of the people on the island at any given time are just visitors.

It has a lot of historical significance. Even Bimini Road can be traced all the way back to the legendary Lost City of Atlantis. During prohibition, rumrunners did all of their business from Bimini; hiding alcohol in the sands of Bimini. Like mention, Hemingway; along with the likes of Jimmy Buffet and Dr. Martin Luther King all had made visits to the island in their times.

One day cruise to Bimini by plane with Bahamas Air Tours; Island Hopping tours. Bimini Bahamas is one of the most popular Bahamas destinations but where is Bimini?

Where is Bimini

Where is Bimini in relation to Florida? Just fifty miles off Florida’s southeastern coast, it is no wonder it is a top destination in the Bahamas. Bimini consists of two main islands — a north and south — in addition to its many cays.

Flying vs taking the boat to Bimini Bahamas

When it comes to flying vs taking the boat, it is just one of the decisions you need to make before going on your trip to Bahamas. With Bahamas Air Tours, you can take a one day cruise to Bimini through the sky and take advantage of the time saved with more time at the widely-renowned Resorts World Bimini.

Aboard our twin-engined Navajo aircraft, you will be afforded a guaranteed window seat and the company of a private party on the 9-seater plane. Our private plane is known for having the largest viewing windows on any aircraft in the world so it will give you a great opportunity to see what many people consider the best bird’s eye view in the world.

Check out the 11 things you should know before your Bimini cruise

Let’s jump right in on the 19 things you should know during your Bimini cruise. Here are some attraction tips, transportation tips, and the “you-should-know” tips for your Bimini cruise:

1. Swim with sharks at Resorts World Bimini

One of the most popular places in Bimini, Resorts World, also lets you swim with reef sharks. Few other places in the Bahamas arrange this kind of experience.

Go diving in Bimini to see excellent marine life. On your Bimini cruise with Bahamas Air Tours, you will see Bimini Bahamas at its best. Find out Where is Bimini before leaving.

Go diving in Bimini to see excellent marine life.

2. Radio Beach will most-likely be crowded

Photos of Radio Beach are likely to give you false expectations of your experience in Bimini. As it is one of the first islands tourists will visit in the Bahamas, the most popular beach usually gets crowded once other people on Bimini cruise and tour ferries start to arrive. If you don’t like the crowds, you can elect to visit a different beach further from the cruise port. Bimini is full of nice beaches.

3. You can take a one day cruise to Bimini via the sky

Don’t waste your time on the Bimini ferry. Additionally, if your Bimini experience wasn’t enough, you can always come back with Bahamas Air Tours in the future on a Bimini cruise in the sky. By traveling there by plane, you will have plenty of time to explore the entire island.

4. The weather in Bimini remains the same year-round

If you are trying to pick the best time for your Bimini cruise, you will appreciate knowing the weather in Bimini pretty much remains consistent all year round. Try to avoid the time between March until mid-April as this is the Spring Breaker’s season and will be very busy and party-driven.

5. You can purchase a one day pass to a Bimini resort

If your cruise is coming through Bimini, instead of choosing between another snorkel tour or diving package, you can opt for a day pass to a Bimini resort for something new and exciting.

6. Dive with dolphins at Bimini Big Game Club & Marina

Ever imagine diving with these majestic creatures? Now, you can at Bimini Big Game Club & Marina. With just enough time to take a Bimini cruise diving excursion, this is a once in a lifetime opportunity to dive with the promise of dolphins.

7. Avoid the Miami to Bimini ferry by sea

As mentioned above, the Bimini ferry will almost always be a lousy, crowded experience. Not to mention, it often is behind schedule which means you will miss your chance to visit empty beaches. Instead, you can save time and fly to Bimini in luxury.

Instead of the Bimini ferry from Miami, opt to fly. It will get you to Bimini Bahamas faster so you can relax in your Bimini resort and enjoy your one day cruise to Bimini in style.

Instead of the Bimini ferry from Miami, you can travel with Bahamas Air Tours.

8. Trace back to the Lost City of Atlantis

Bimini Road — a mysterious rock formation. A long stretch of limestone running through Bimini. Is it a natural occurrence or is it remnants from the unknown highway leading to the Lost City of Atlantis? You decide.

9. You can dive a mysterious shipwreck at Sapona

An old warship, built after World War I, was sold to be used as a storage ship near Bimini to sell illegal rum during the Prohibition Age. After being damaged in a hurricane in 1926, it was used as a bombing target to train U.S. Airmen for World War II. Then, legend says five airmen mysteriously disappeared after a test drop in 1945 and all target practice ended.

Bimini shipwreck, Sapona, sank during a hurricane in 1926.

10. The Bimini Fast Ferry is not that fast

You may be tempted to elect to take the Miami to Bimini ferry with promises of a ‘fast ferry’. Just know, it takes a little over two hours to travel fifty miles to Bimini aboard the ferry. Plus, you will have to account for queuing times and your return trip. With all things accounted for, you should probably block out five hours of your day just for travel. That doesn’t seem as efficient as it boasts.

11. Go on a Rainbow Reef Excursion

Perhaps the most colorful and lively reef explorations in the Bahamas (and certainly around Bimini). Royal Caribbean provides a day excursion to this place and several other companies will also take you to explore the reef. It may be better to opt for a guide to know where to see the most marine life.

Which Bahamas Island Is Right for You?

author image

See recent posts by Kyle Valenta

Beautiful beaches, crystal-clear water, and a laid-back pace of life all make the Bahamas one of the most amazing destinations in the Caribbean. And while the Abaco Islands and Grand Bahama were devastated by Hurricane Dorian in 2019, the rest of this island nation is open for business. With around 30 inhabited islands to choose from, though, knowing which Bahamas island is right for you can be tricky. You see, stunning tropical scenery and picture-perfect beaches aside, each has its own special vibe — from Harbour Island's Pink Sand Beach to laid-back Cat Island and the family-friendly Atlantis Resorts on Paradise Island . Luckily, we've spent a lot of time in the Bahamas, and have the perfect island escape for any kind of traveler.

New Providence Island (Nassau) Is Great for Travelers Who Want to Be Near the Action

Beach at the SLS Baha Mar

Beach at the SLS Baha Mar/Oyster

While downtown Nassau (on New Providence Island) isn’t really the Caribbean escape most travelers have in mind, it is the capital of the Bahamas. From souvenir markets like the Straw Market to Fort Fincastle and the Queens Steps, things to do in Nassau are abundant enough for a day entertainment. It’s also home to local bars and nightclubs. However, if you’re staying on New Providence Island , you’d do well do sample its more luxurious side. That’s best expressed at Baha Mar, an exclusive development along the island’s central north coast. Here, some of the world’s most famous luxury resort brands sit together in a beautiful gated community that overlooks amazing Cable Beach. Baha Mar resorts also include excellent boutiques and shops, plus the chance to gamble like a high-roller at the largest casino in the Caribbean. Visiting New Providence Island is also one of the easiest escapes in the Bahamas, as it’s home to the largest airport in the country.

Your Luxury Hotel Pick on New Providence Island and Nassau: Grand Hyatt Baha Mar

The Elixir Pool at the Grand Hyatt Baha Mar

Sitting right on the crystal-clear waters of Cable Beach, the Grand Hyatt Baha Mar isn’t small by any means, but the sheer number of features here give any resort on nearby Paradise Island a run for its money. The Grand Hyatt has six attractive pools, the Caribbean’s largest casino, impressive spa and fitness facilities, and an excellent golf course. Dining options range from haute Chinese cuisine and a seafood restaurant to Mexican food trucks. It’s a great escape for families and couples alike, and rooms are chic and spacious.

Paradise Island is Perfect For Families With Kids

Beach at the Hotel Riu Palace Paradise Island

Beach at the Hotel Riu Palace Paradise Island/Oyster

The vast majority of travelers who think of the Bahamas are thinking of Paradise Island . This is the Bahamas at its most resort-heavy and bustling — and it’s also home to the world famous Atlantis Resorts. Knowing exactly where to stay on Paradise Island can be tricky — each of the Atlantis Resorts has their own personality, after all ( you can check out our breakdown of them here ). There are also non-Atlantis properties found on the island, most of which provide access to at least some of the Atlantis amenities. Those include everything from water parks to nightclubs, and all hotels offer numerous offshore activities. Because the resorts here pack in amenities for guests of all ages, Paradise Island is easily the most family-friendly spot in the Bahamas. Just keep in mind that this is the most popular destination in the Bahamas and can be busy.

Your Upscale Hotel Pick on Paradise Island: The Cove at Atlantis

Exterior at The Cove at Atlantis

While The Cove is home to the only adult pool at The Atlantis properties, it’s still incredibly family-friendly. It’s also worth a stay because it’s the most modern and attractive of the Atlantis resorts, while still offering access to the dizzying number of family-friendly features on offer (like the water park). The Cove shares a separate beach and large family pool with neighboring Reef Tower , making it a great spot for travelers of all kinds.

The Exumas Are Great for Lovers of Picture-Perfect Beaches

View from hotel at the Fowl Cay Resort

View from hotel at the Fowl Cay Resort/Oyster

There’s a good chance you’ve heard of the Exumas . In fact, the islands that make up this part of the Bahamas are some of the most famous and picture-perfect you’re likely to find. Yes, Pig Beach is part of the Exumas (though whether you should visit is subject to some serious ethical concerns ). But swimming pigs aside, the Exumas are fringed with stunningly white sand that almost glows, making this a beach-goers delight. The islands of the Exumas also tend to stay less crowded that other Bahamas islands, though you’ll be paying a pretty here. Even casual mid-range properties can be pricey — but that’s to be expected given how close to paradise you’ll feel.

Your All-Inclusive Hotel Pick in The Exumas: Fowl Cay Resort

Pool at the Fowl Cay Resort

Crowded beaches are unheard of on this private island resort, where a maximum of 28 guests at a time have free range of 50 acres and three beaches. Personal boats for daily excursions, on-call service, spacious villas with fully stocked kitchens and wet bars, and a host of all-inclusive activities make Fowl Cay a standout gem in the Exumas.

Eleuthera Is Ideal for Island Vibes and Escaping It All

Beach at the French Leave Resort

Beach at the French Leave Resort/Oyster

If you want to avoid the crowds, Eleuthera is ideal — there are less than 15,000 residents on the island, and hotels here tend to be smaller boutique properties like the chic French Leave . While it’s tiny, that doesn’t mean that Eleuthera is lacking for things to do. The historic capital city — Governour’s Harbour — makes for a charming day trip or night visit, with its colorful colonial architecture and vacation vibe. You can dine at 1648 for local fare like grouper, jerk chicken wraps, and conch, or popular spots like Front Porch. You’ll likely want to visit Governor’s Harbour on Friday, when the Anchor Bay Fish Fry becomes the hot spot for locals and visitors to feast on the catch of the day, sip tropical cocktails, and enjoy music and dancing. If you’re after beaches, it’s hard to top those found here — in fact, Eleuthera’s pink sand beaches are almost as famous as those found on nearby Harbour Island.

Your Eleuthera Luxury Hotel Pick: The Cove Eleuthera

The Pool at The Cove Eleuthera

This 40-acre boutique resort on Eleuthera has been a hot spot for privacy-seeking celebs since it opened in 2013. One look and you’ll understand why. The Cove features a jaw-dropping infinity pool and cliffside bar, all tucked between two pretty private beaches. Chic, airy rooms have white decor, and enormous villas with private plunge pools and state-of-the-art kitchens are on offer.

Long Island Is Great for Adventurous Travelers

Beach at the Cape Santa Maria Beach Resort & Villas

Beach at the Cape Santa Maria Beach Resort & Villas/Oyster

While the Exumas and Eleuthera are great for lazing away the day, the Bahamas isn’t all about low-energy getaways. Not far from the Exumas is Long Island , a great spot for fishing, diving, snorkeling, and eco tours. In fact, shark diving is a big deal here, and a great option for true adventure seekers. The fearless can dive into Dean’s Blue Hole, one of the world’s deepest blue holes, while on land the Lucayan Indian Cave is great for exploring. You can head to a different beach every day and find virtually nobody, making this a great destination for adventurers who like their share of peace and quiet as well. There are also small restaurants up and down the island that will satisfy your craving for great island fare — Max’s Conch Bar and Tiny’s Hurricane Hole are always popular.

Your Long Island Hotel Pick: Stella Maris Resort Club

East Beach at the Stella Maris Resort Club

Stella Maris Resort Club is precisely the kind of property that fits right in on Long Island. The landscape is natural and the vibe is entirely low-key. With a variety of hotel rooms, cottages, and villas with up to four bedrooms, the resort has lodging options to fit most parties and budgets. There are three pools at the hotel, but keep in mind that swimming here isn’t an option as the beach is quite rough. If you’re after a swimmable beach, check out Long Island’s Cape Santa Maria Beach Resort instead.

Cat Island Is the Most Secluded Island in the Bahamas

Beach at the Pigeon Cay Beach Club

Beach at the Pigeon Cay Beach Club/Oyster

With only 1,500 residents spread out over 150 square miles, you’d be hard-pressed to find a less densely populated Bahamian island. What’s that mean for travelers? An incredible chance to truly get away from it all. You won’t find any Paradise Island-style resorts here — in fact, most of the properties feel like a bed-and-breakfast across Cat Island . You also won’t find a wide array of places to eat or drink, like you would on Harbour Island. Even so, it’s easy enough to organize diving, snorkeling, and fishing expeditions — as well as daily island-hopping adventures — from Cat Island. However, we’d suggest packing a few books and simply curling up in a hammock for a week to really soak up the unplugged vibe of this special place. If you’re after a full breakdown of Cat Island, check out our guide here .

Cat Island Hotel Pick: Pigeon Cay Beach Club

Beach Bar at the Pigeon Cay Beach Club

Pigeon Cay Beach Club is a barefoot-style property that draws couples, solo travelers, and families alike. The powdery white sand on the nearby beach stays blissfully uncrowded, and the resort’s seven rustic bungalows make you feel like you’ve escaped it all. Just don’t expect TV or internet. Amenities like free bikes, kayaks, and snorkel gear make unwinding a treat.

Harbour Island Is Famous for Pink Sand Beaches

Beach at the Coral Sands Hotel

Beach at the Coral Sands Hotel/Oyster

While Eleuthera has its share of pink sand beaches, the real star of the Bahamas’ show is Harbour Island . Here, the stunning coral-infused sands make for a dramatic backdrop that feels otherworldly. Part of the island’s appeal is just how remote it feels — getting here generally requires flying to North Eleuthera Airport, then a cab ride, then a boat ride, and then another cab ride to your hotel. But that has made this one of the more exclusive hideaways of the Bahamas — think of Harbour Island as the glitzed-up counterpoint to laid-back Cat Island. The foodie scene is big here, and you’ll want to make reservations at your favorite spots well in advance. What’s the best way to get around Harbour Island? Rent a golf cart — it’s only three miles long, after all.

Harbour Island Hotel Pick: Coral Sands Hotel

Pool at the Pools at the Coral Sands Hotel

Coral Sands Hotel sits right on one of the Caribbean’s most gorgeous beaches and has a beach-chic vibe that’s hard to beat.  The beachfront Bahamian cottages are easily worth the splurge, though all rooms feature perks like memory foam beds and huge bathrooms. It’s all about relaxing at Coral Sands, from the beautiful infinity pool and beach to cocktails at the laid-back beach bar or even yoga classes.

Bimini Is Great for a Quick Long-Weekend Trip

Paradise Beach at the Resorts World Bimini

Paradise Beach at the Resorts World Bimini/Oyster

Think you need to deal with multiple planes, taxis, and boat rides to reach the pretty beaches of The Bahamas? Think again. Bimini — one of the smallest sets of islands in the Bahamas — is only a 30-minute flight from Miami. That makes it perfect for a long-weekend recharge. We like Bimini because it’s developed just-enough. You can find plenty of restaurants and bars to keep yourself happy, and there are numerous beautiful beaches to choose from. It also has all kinds of options for travelers’ tastes. You can opt for frozen cocktails and beach clubs with buzzing vibes (at the Resorts World Bimini ) or kick back in your own rental villa and be independent. In any case, if you need a quick dose of sun to get through the winter, Bimini is your spot. For a more detailed breakdown of Bimini, check out guide here .

Your Upscale Hotel Pick in Bimini: Hilton Bimini

The Lazy River Pool at the Hilton At Resorts World Bimini

Opened in 2015, the Bimini Hilton is one of the most popular spots on the island and has loads of on-site amenities. The hotel is part of the Resorts World Bimini condo complex, and many of the amenities are shared. Expect access to multiple pools and eateries, a marina, spa, and casino. The 305 rooms are gorgeous and contemporary — many have sea views or swim-out access to the Lazy River Pool.

Bimini Cruise Port Guide

Just 50 miles from the coast of Florida, Bimini is a world unto itself. It was one of Ernest Hemingway’s favorite places where he came to write as well as fish for the elusive blue marlin. With a population of only 2,000, the islands never feel crowded. On your Bimini cruise, you’ll find the North Island is a bit more lively, the South Island a bit more relaxed.

These unspoiled islands are endowed with peaceful, pristine beaches, friendly locals, fresh seafood, and some of the best sportfishing and water sports in the world. Diving and snorkeling enthusiasts will be in paradise here, where gorgeous coral reefs, colorful fish, blue holes created by sunken limestone, and shipwrecks await. Enjoy the uncomplicated way of island life on a luxury cruise to the Bahamas with Celebrity Cruises.

Since the warm waters of The Bahamas run right through the Gulf Stream, the Bimini Biological Field Station set up a shark lab here. Tour the station, learn about the research done, and even adopt a shark. Non-aggressive lemon sharks are common in the area.

Dolphin House Museum

A lifelong labor of love and a must-see, 5th generation Biminite historian and poet, Ashley Saunders, built this charming and quirky museum from shells, sea glass, recycled tiles, coins, and objects salvaged from area shipwrecks. It’s all an amazing tribute to the wonders of the ocean.

Bimini Road

Off Bimini’s north coast lies the mysterious Bimini Road, submerged under about 18 feet of water. Snorkel or scuba to see giant rocks neatly laid out in a road-like line for a half-mile. Some people like to think it may be a part of the sunken Lost City of Atlantis; others think it’s simply a result of natural forces.

Learn More About Bahamas Shore Excursions

Top things to do in bimini, lounge on the beach.

Some of the best beaches in Bimini are on the southwest side of the North Island, like Radio Beach, Blister Beach, and Spook Hill. On Bimini beaches, you’ll enjoy fun water activities like snorkeling, scuba diving, and paddleboarding. Of course, you can also do nothing more than gloriously soak up some sun while sipping an icy cold Kalik.

Snorkel or Dive

Bimini is full of exciting places to snorkel or scuba dive. Go snorkeling at Rainbow Reef, a protected marine park with dozens of species of fish. Experienced divers can visit the Continental Shelf on a two-tank dive. Or explore the fascinating S.S. Sapona shipwreck and learn about the concrete ship’s storied history.

While on your Bimini cruise, spend some time fishing these impossibly turquoise waters. Anglers from all over come here hoping to catch bonefish, blue marlin, tuna, amberjack, sailfish, and more. In fact, over 50 fishing world records were set in these waters. Hemingway’s time fishing and living in Bimini even inspired his prize-winning The Old Man and the Sea .

Top Food & Drink Spots in Bimini

From sophisticated seafood restaurants to casual beachside conch shacks, Bimini is a foodie’s paradise. Seafood is king, especially conch meat, which is transformed into fresh salads, fritters, chowder, and ceviche. Sweet, fresh-baked Bimini bread is another staple not to be missed.

Rum is a favored island beverage, and there are two cocktails that rise to the top of the most-popular list: Goombay Smash, which features four types of rum, pineapple juice, and orange juice; and Rum Runners, made with fruit juices, banana liqueur, rum, and grenadine.

Culture & History of Bimini

Bimini, also called The Biminis, is actually three islands: North Island, South Island, and the uninhabited East Island. The first inhabitants in Bimini were the Lucayans, and in their language, the name "Bimini" means "two islands". Bimini currently has a population of about only 2,000 people, most of whom live in Alice Town on North Bimini.

Some of Bimini’s famed visitors include Juan Ponce de Leon, who searched for the Fountain of Youth here; Ernest Hemingway, who wrote and fished on the islands; and Martin Luther King, Jr., who wrote his acceptance speech for the Nobel Peace Prize here.

Transportation in Bimini

Transportation is not a problem on the seven-mile-long North Island. One of the most popular ways to get around is by golf cart or bicycle, which are available to rent. Be aware that driving is on the left side of the road here. If you want to travel between the North and the South Island, you can simply take the daily ferry. Taxis are also plentiful.

Shopping Near the Bimini Cruise Port

On the North Island, King’s Highway is the easiest place to find shops for souvenirs or something to eat. There’s also a small market just south of the cruise pier. Find a stall run by a local craftsperson at the Craft Centre in Alice Town for handcrafted mementos made by a local.

Local Currency & Tipping Customs

The official currency of The Bahamas is the Bahamian dollar ($BSD). U.S. currency is also accepted. Most shops and restaurants accept debit cards or credit cards, but it’s always a good idea to have some cash on hand.

There Are Now 14 Reasons To Visit Bimini In The Bahamas!

The Bahamas is paradise on Earth. From Freeport's beautiful beaches to beautiful islands that need to be seen before one dies , the Bahamas is a treat for the senses. Besides enjoying the sun at Freeport or the beaches in Nassau, Bimini is another pristine paradise in the Bahamas.

Regarded for its beautiful beaches, diving excursions, and recreational water sports, there are plenty of other convincing reasons to visit this cluster of Bahamian islands!

UPDATE: 2023/05/10 18:07 EST BY NOAH STAATS

This article has been refreshed with four new reasons to come see Bimini, including the rich history, pirate past, friendly people, and close proximity to Florida's south coast. Whether someone has been to the Bahamas or this is their first time: Bimini is a paradise every person should see during their lifetime. Have fun!

14 Bimini Has A Rich History

On top of being stunning, Bimini has a rich history. Something worth mentioning is that the first inhabitants of the island were the Lucayans. Furthermore, the name Bimini stems from the meaning "two islands" or "the twins" in the Lucayan language.

Bimini was also incredibly vital to the United States during the Prohibition era, working as a favorite haven and supply point for the rum-running trade hence why the US advertises rum with a Bimini/Bahamas theme most times.

13 The People Of Bimini Are One-Of-A-Kind

Another reason to come visit Bimini in the Bahamas is the people. Not only are most islanders incredibly gracious to visitors, but they also provide an experience like no other. Bahamian culture calls for family, often extending to those who come to see the island. Whether someone is from down the street or across the globe: the people of Bimini are kind, caring, and helpful.

12 Bimini Was Once Home To Famous Pirates

On top of the friendly people and great weather, Bimini was once the home of many notable pirates. For instance, prior to 1835, Bimini was the home to famous pirates like Blackbeard and Francis Drake: two incredibly famous pirates whose tales live on to this generation. Throughout the island, there is a pirate theme in restaurants, shops, and attractions: because Bimini once had true pirates roaming the land.

11 Bimini Is Only 50 Miles Off The Coast Of Florida

One major perk of traveling to Bimini in the Bahamas is that it is only 50 miles from the coast of Florida. Therefore, visitors only need to board a plane for a short trip or even a brief boat ride. Technically, the southern coast of Florida is 48 nautical miles from the heart of Bimini, so this is not a far voyage for people wanting a weekend in paradise.

10 It's Less Crowded Than Nassau

Bahama's capital of Nassau, boasts a reputation as a tropical destination that combines the sun with the perks of city living. Undoubtedly, Nassau offers travelers a range of attractions, from the Queen's Staircase to Cabbage Beach. However, compared to Bimini, Nassau can also be bustling with people. Thus, travelers seeking a quieter destination with chill tropical vibes should seriously consider a vacation in Bimini!

9 Travelers Can (Supposedly) See The Lost City Of Atlantis

There are myths and hypotheses about finding Atlantis , even on the humble islands of Bimini. Specifically, scuba divers exploring the western waters in North Bimini may come across perfectly straight stones that make up The Bimini Road . Spanning 1500 ft , there are claims these stones were part of an ancient road system for the legendary lost city. Though some may disagree with such a finding, the perfectly aligned stones are still a sight to behold when exploring Bimini.

8 Bimini Is The Sport Fishing Capital Of The World

Many anglers enjoy fishing charters and excursions in Bimini, known as the "Sport Fishing Capital of the World." Year-round, Bimini's waters are abundant in a collection of fish, including mackerel, wahoo, bluefin tuna, sailfish, barracudas, and much more. Otherwise, less experienced fishers (or those not interested in the sport at all) can still Bimini's waters with a little boat trip!

7 The Dolphin House Museum Is One-Of-A-Kind

Alice Town's Dolphin House Museum is as uncommon as the rarest sea glass around , yet equally beautiful. Constructed in 1993 , local historian and artist Ashley Saunders crafted the Dolphin House by hand using a collection of sea glass, recycled materials, and concrete. The result is a vibrant house that's a popular stop on walking tours around Bimini. Being a life-sized art display entitled A Poem in Stone , the Dolphin House also contains an on-site museum that educates visitors about the island's history.

6 Bimini's Weather Is Pleasant Year-Round

Like many tropical destinations, Bimini boasts beautiful, sunny weather year-round, except for rainy (and hurricane) months between July to October. Summer months are blessed with calm seas and warm weather, while the winters boast cooler ocean breezes and mild temperatures.

5 Bimini Is Home To "The Fountain Of Youth"

Though nothing more than myth and legend, explorer Juan Ponce de León claimed to find the Fountain of Youth in Bimini. Could it be the island's mineral-rich waters? Alternatively, perhaps Juan was enamored with the shimmer of the Bimini waters. Whatever the rationale was, the 16th-century explorer claimed that youth would be restored to older persons who drank the Bimini waters. Today, close to the South Bimini Airport, curious travelers can see this landmark, which is a well carved from limestone.

4 Mingle With The Local Dolphins!

Visitors heading to Bimini can enjoy the splendor of dolphins by booking a dive expedition or excursion. Playful by nature, these beautiful creatures will dazzle and entertain divers while in their natural habitat. When in Bimini, tourists can be sure to spot packs of wild dolphins in the water, specifically the Atlantic spotted and bottlenose varieties.

Though some certified tour operators will allow tourists to get close to the dolphins, they should refrain from touching or feeding them unless permitted to do so.

3 Enjoy Authentic Bahamian Food In Bimini

Luckily for hungry travelers, it's not difficult to find good grub in Bimini, as there are restaurants sprawled across North and South Bimini. Try a loaf (or two) of freshly baked bread and other baked goods at Nate's Bimini Breads, or indulge in a conch salad made by Big Mike's Fresh Conch Salad . For something livelier, tourists can flock to the Island House , a popular bar in Alice Town known for friendly vibes, rum, and interesting decor.

2 There Are Tons Of Great Dive Spots

Bimini is not only studded with corals and beautiful waters. This Bahamian destination is home to an abundant population of sharks, specifically hammerheads and reef sharks. Experienced divers that book an excursion through a certified tour operator can get up close and personal with the sharks to see these predatory fish thriving in their natural habitat. Besides Bimini's famed sharks , divers may also spot other marine life, from schools of small fishes to manta rays!

1 Relax And Enjoy The Resort Life

Due to its proximity to Florida, Bimini often receives visitors from the US, as well as cruisers landing at the Bimini Cruise Port. Still, this Bahamian island is a tad less noisy than Nassau or Freeport, even with its modest collection of resorts, hotels, and vacation rentals. Enjoy the Bimini's sandy shores and turquoise waters while indulging in the resort life at stays like the Bimini Sands Resort or the Hilton at Resorts World Bimini .
