Boca Juniors stadium: Everything you need to know about La Bombonera

18+ | Commercial Content | T&Cs apply | Begambleaware.org

La Bombonera is a dream stadium for all groundhoppers and football lovers across the globe.

The home of Boca Juniors, this stadium is arguably South America's most famous and is also one of the most well-recognised grounds in the world.

The history of La Bombonera

This famous old stadium opened 83 years ago and has been the home of Boca Juniors ever since. The stadium often tops lists for the best stadium, best atmosphere, and it is not hard to see why.

This 57,200-capacity stadium sits in the heart of Buenos Aires and is located a stone's throw from the Rio de la Plata, which separates Argentina and Uruguay.

In 1921, following several years of financial difficulties and lack of funds, Boca Juniors put out a fundraising drive to raise money for their next stadium.

The fundraising was successful, with the club raising enough money to rent, and then buy, a new stadium initially. The land they chose, which would become La Bombonera, was owned by Ferro Carril del Sud.

The stadium finally opened on the 25th of May, 1940, with a friendly match between Boca Juniors and San Lorenzo, which the home side won 2–0 with both goals scored by Ricardo Alarcón.

It's hard to imagine now but this match only lasted seventy minutes, because the stadium did not have any floodlights. The first official game at the new stadium was on the 2nd of June, 1940, when Boca Juniors beat Newell's Old Boys 2-0. Ricardo Alarcón was on hand once again, this time to score the first official goal at the stadium.

The famous atmosphere

🇦🇷 Crucial games in the Copa de La Liga kicking off in two hours. Will Boca Juniors qualify for the play-offs? Will they face River Plate in the semis?! Racing Club and Newell’s Old Boys also need a win… time will tell! La Bombonera will be shaking tonight that much we do know pic.twitter.com/peyWJkWyAH — Tears at La Bombonera (@BomboneraTears) April 16, 2024

The atmosphere at La Bombonera is one of the best in the world with Boca Juniors fans being an historically large and vocal fan base. La Bombonera translates into English as the Chocolate Box, but the official name is Alberto Jose Armando Stadium.

The iconic shape of the stadium is due to the residential buildings behind one stand. This stand is home to VIP boxes only but there are plans to redevelop the stadium to be filled out with four stands. This would greatly expand the capacity and allow more fans to attend games. That said, it would deprive supporters and stadium lovers of one of the world's most iconic and memorable designs.

Boca Juniors has as many as 315,000 registered members which furthers the need for a larger capacity, yet many Boca fans are against the plans to either relocate or redevelop their famous old ground.

Potential new stadium

There were also plans for an entirely new stadium, however some of the discussions have been ambitious to say the least.

One of those came in 2023 during the presidential elections when candidate Jorge Reale – who failed to win enough votes – announced that he wanted to build an entirely new stadium on Demarchi Island, around one kilometre from the current La Bombonera site.

In 2023, Reale visited the potential site with architect Enrique Lombardi, to discuss plans. It was suggested that a stadium built here could have an eye-watering capacity of 112,000. To put this into persepctive, the current La Bombonera capacity is 57,200. Reale's proposed stadium would include a roof, 444 VIP seats, 78 TV booths and 4,000 parking spaces.

A more realistic option for the stadium would be to expand the current site. Former President Jorge Amor Ameal was a fan of expanding La Bombonera. This plan would involve buying the land behind the fourth stand and building the stadium out. This could increase the capacity to 78,000 – around 6,000 less than the capacity at El Monumental, the home of fierce rivals River Plate.

Bucket list stadium

In 2012, Zack Pumerantz wrote an article for Bleacher Report titled “50 Sports Venues to Visit Before You Die”, in this article, stadiums such as Wimbledon Centre Court in England, Nou Camp in Spain, The Rungrado May Day Stadium in North Korea, Maracana in Brazil and The Float at Marina Bay in Singapore were all mentioned alongside La Bombonera. In actual fact, Boca Juniors stadium appears on every list of football grounds to visit, but this is no real surprise.

If there ever was a stadium that is a must-visit, it is this one. The Argentine culture, Buenos Aires itself, the design, the atmosphere – just one of these is enough reason to make the trip, but this ground offers every possible reason to go and see a game in the iconic La Bombonera.

La Bombonera

La Bombonera

Club: CA Boca Juniors | Opening: 1940 | Capacity: 49,000

History and description

La Bombonera was built between 1938 and 1940, and, as the legend goes, received its name because the architect suddenly realised the similarities between the stadium and a chocolate (bombon) he was eating.

Boca Juniors had already played at the site since 1924, which was until then a rather simple wooden stadium. After Boca bought the land in 1931, it therefore started making plans to build a new concrete stadium that could hold 100,000 fans.

La Bombonera officially opened on the 25th of May 1940 with a friendly between Boca Juniors and San Lorenzo (2-0), though it took until the end of 1941 for the second tier to be completed. A third tier was finally constructed between 1951 and 1953.

La Bombonera at that time had stands on three sides. The fourth side was left open with just a few VIP boxes and an obelisk, which was because of a lack of space due to the residential buildings just across the street.

Boca Juniors almost moved to a new 140,000-stadium in the 1970s, but political and economical turmoil ended the construction that had just begun.

In 1986, the stadium got named Estadio Alberto J. Armando in honour of the former iconic club president, but most fans have kept referring to the stadium as La Bombonera.

In 1996, the VIP boxes and obelisk on the open site were replaced by a small stand that was higher than the previous one, but again mainly consisted of VIP boxes.

Boca Juniors currently has plans to build a new stadium almost adjacent to La Bombonera, with a capacity of 75,000 seats divided over two tiers. La Bombonera will not get demolished though, but used for other purposes. Plans are still in preliminary stages.

How to get to La Bombonera

La Bombonera is located south of Buenos Aires’ city centre (Microcentro), at less than 4 kilometres from the Plaza de Mayo and 2 kilometres from popular nightlife area San Telmo.

La Bombonera is hard to access by car and it is advised to either take a taxi or go by public transport.

The stadium has no metro station in the vicinity, though the walk from the San Telmo area should take no more than half an hour.

There are also many buses (colectivos) that pass close to the stadium, of which most also cross the city centre (microcentro). Take one of the following colectivos in southern direction: 10, 20, 22, 24, 25, 29, 33, 39, 46, 53, 54, 64, 70, 74, 86, 93, 102, 129, 130, 152, 159, 168, or 186.

Address: Brandsen 805, Capital Federal

Eat, drink, and sleep near La Bombonera

La Bombonera lies in the middle of the working-class La Boca area, which has a slightly negative reputation in terms of safety, and therefore care should be taken at night. During the day, however, the area around the stadium is reasonably safe as it is located adjacent to the famous and touristy Caminito de la Boca with its coloured artist houses.

There are various restaurants and bars around the Caminito de la Boca, but the San Telmo area toward the north may be a better alternative, especially at night. Most of the places are in the area around Plaza Dorrego. From there it is less than 30 minutes walking to the stadium.

There are few hotels near La Bombonera, but plenty of options in the San Telmo area. Some of the best-rated, but also more expensive, options include Tiana Hotel Boutique , Telmho Hotel Boutique , Bohemia Hotel , and Hotel Babel . Expect to pay between US$ 60.00 and US$110.00.

Cheaper and more basic options include Hotel Carly , Hotel Chipre , and Hotel Casablanca . There are also many hostels in the San Telmo area. For an overview, click here .

Boca Juniors Tickets

Boca Juniors has stopped selling tickets to the general public and currently only allows club members to enter the stadium.

Tourists can make use of the many ticket agencies that offer packages, which however go for highly inflated prices.

There were two Boca games during my visit. To be on a safe side I bought a ticket for game in Copa Libertadores against Tolima from an agency. It was expensive( USD160), but was quarenteed and included transport, food and drinks. The other game I was trying to buy a ticket myself but that did not work so I missed out. I found a guy on Facebook who was selling them and was going to meet him on the day of the match to collect tickets. He never showed up( there were another 10 people waiting). Walk from metro station to the stadium is not the easiest one, but you can get a very cheap taxi. The stadium is very unique. Atmosphere is always nice, but I would say it is overrated since so many tourist come there.

I went to Batistuta’s last game for Boca Junios v San Lorenzo in 1991. In those days you could just walk up and pay to get in. I was stood behind the goal. San Lorenzo fans were on a tier above. A continuous torrent of spit from above endured throughout the game but also thrown down was a car tyre and, no kidding, a shopping trolley! It was quite an experience. Boca lost 1-0.

An absolutely amazing staduim to visit. I visited in April to watch Boca v Nuevo Chicago ( 0-0 ). Brilliant atmosphere from start to finish. We bought tickets from an organised tour group, we met at a bar in San Telmo they provide a few beers and some food and then provide a small coach to La Boca with a guide. Loads of different nationalities in the group of about 30. Normally wouldn’t do this kind of trip but it was the only way we could get tickets in the UK. We paid about £100 and sat in Sector L, which is along the touch line between the Boca tunnel and the away team tunnel and is next to the main hooligan/fans area. The guide sat next to us in the staduim and told us that he sits in this sector every game and we felt safe throughout the game. You do need to be slightly careful but don’t let that put you off going to watch a game. The staduim was brilliant. A proper old school staduim, standing behind both goals and seats along the side. The tour company offer different price tickets ranging from about £65 to £100 each. After the game the guide took us back to the coach and then dropped us back off in San Telmo. I got talking to a few locals who said that you can get tickets from members outside the staduim at a lot cheaper prices but again you have to be careful if your going to do this. We went on the tour of the staduim the day before the game. The guide was really good and spoke English, he conducted the tour in Spanish and then came over to our group and explained what he had said. The tour isn’t brillant but it’s definitely worth £8. You get to look around the staduim visit the museum and have a drink in the bar at the end ( we sat on the terrace behind the goal with a nice cold beer ! ). The club shop is expensive, but there are loads of shops selling brilliant copies all around the staduim at cheap prices. They have all the teams in Argentina plus the national team shirts. I would recommend the steak restaurant directly opposite the staduim. It’s nothing special when you walk in but the steak was amazing ! and for only about £5 with a beer ! After the tour we walked down to La Camitino tourist area, it’s only a five minute walk, we didn’t have any problems but be a little careful because apparently they have a lot of crime in this area between the staduim and the start of the Main tourist Street.

Buneos Aires is brilliant !

Secrets of Buenos Aires

How to buy tickets for Boca Juniors as a tourist

Do you want to buy tickets to see a match of Boca Juniors? Let’s keep the story short: it’s almost impossible. However, there is a way that a tourist can buy a Boca Juniors ticket.

Read also: The history of La Boca (why blue and yellow, what’s famous, …)

It is a dream of many football fans. Attend a match at La Bombonera. Boca Juniors plays its matches at the La Bombonera stadium and is located in the La Boca district in Buenos Aires. The stadium can accommodate around 49,000 people.

Due to many riots in the past, it is unfortunately no longer allowed in Argentina for supporters to visit away games.

How to buy tickets for Boca Juniors?

Since this year I have been in contact with Nicolas who organizes football experiences in Buenos Aires. This includes the tickets to the game, hotel pick-up and drop-off, and a guide for during the game. To make it easier, I created a page to send your request and he will get in contact with you. Click here to the page.

However, there are also a lot of scamming practices on the market. High prices, fake tickets, cancelations, … So watch out! It is not easy to get a football ticket on your own. First, you need to understand how the ticket sale works.

First of all: ticket sales were handed over to supporters’ groups, a few years ago. Residents subscribe themselves on a waiting list to get a Boca Juniors member card. The waiting time runs up to 6 years now!

However, often supporters don’t go to all the Boca games. It happens that a Boca Junior supporter has an agreement with a hotel or broker. If the supporter doesn’t go to a game, he lends his seasonal pass (member card) to the broker. Of course for a price. And the story continues. The broker adds a percentage, and so on.

On your own getting a ticket is hopeless, even impossible.

Read the post: top 25 things to do in Buenos Aires

Boca Juniors Stadium La Boca

Are there other options?

Yes, since shortly I am in contact with Nicolas who organizes football experiences in Buenos Aires. Click here to the page.

Other option is that you need to know a Boca Junior fan in person. And he/she is willing to lend the seasonal pass.

Or, you go by a broker, hotel, or tourist organization. But prices per ticket vary between $160 USD and $400 USD. Landingpadba.com is one of the tourist agencies and is well trusted where you can buy tickets for Boca Juniors. I don’t trust Viagogo.

Furthermore, be aware that it’s known that fake tickets are going around!

If you can’t buy tickets for Boca Juniors, I can advise on taking a tour in La Bombonera. It’s a guided tour through the stadium and the museum. A must-do for Boca Juniors fans. Book your ticket online to skip lines.

Visit the Boca Juniors stadium

Watching live a game of the Boca Juniors is truly amazing. As a tourist, you need to be very lucky to get a ticket. But I can recommend you visit La Bombonera stadium! Daily you can visit the stadium and get a tour. Some guides speak English, and during the one-hour tour, you will get a great impression of the club. I went more than once to the stadium for the tour with family and friends and never got bored.

Below I present you the option to visit River Plate’s stadium and Boca Juniors during one tour. Or you can just go directly to La Bombonera to get a ticket. A waiting line can occur.

I would recommend purchasing tickets in advance if possible. The closer to the game, the more expensive the tickets will be, but it’s worth it to avoid the long lines and crowds.

Hi Glenn! Thank you for honestly stating, that it is “impossible” to get the ticket for mens matches. But what about womens team? Are there higher chances for a tourist? Do you have any idea how can one get there? Thanks!

' src=

Hi Karel, I’m not really informed about the womens team. I will try to get some info and updates as soon as possible.

Hi Glenn, after 51 years i will finally be in Argentina to hopefully see Boca play against Arsenal on 3/11, can you please provide the absolute best way if any I can get 2 tickets to this game please. I am coming from Australia finally and would hate to miss this chance to see them live as I will never get this chance again, any help would be much appreciated, thanks George

Hi George, thank you for visiting our website and welcome to Buenos Aires. Getting tickets for Boca Juniors is difficult. I would suggest contacting Landingpadba. This is not a guarantee for getting the tickets. At this moment there are no other ways. Have a pleasant stay in Argentina 😉 Cheers.

' src=

Why don’t you trust viagogo?

Hi Bruce, travelers contacted us with their review about Viagogo. Often we receive the story of fake tickets or cancellation at the very last moment. Therefore, the chance of a valid ticket and that you will actually see the game is very low.

' src=

Is there other trusted companies that sell tickets for Boca matches? Thank you

Hi Roger, the only trusted way at this moment is Landingpadba. Cheers!

Excellent tour pablo our guide was really knowledgeable in regards to all football not just argentinian and his english is excellent. we had various tours whilst in argentina but have to say this is by far the best, we weren't luck enough to be in ba when boca were playing at home but went for the next best option - the guided tour of their stadium. we had a grear guide (eugenie). she gave us loads of information on the ride there about the different areas we passed through and the history of the club. she took us through the museum and gave us so much information that we would never have found out if we had been wandering through on our own. she then accompanied us on the tour of the stadium itself which was really useful as it was largely in spanish and meant the stadium tour guide didn't need to repeat everything for us. i would definitely recommend this tour if you are a football fan., being a student and only visiting buenos aires for a short time, tangol was the best option i could ask for. besides going on a wonderful tour and having a great time at the futbol stadium tour, the customer service was terrific. anytime i wanted to double check a booking or had a question, they would respond promptly and always have an answer for me. i recommend using tangol for all your buenos aires trip adventures., we recently did the tangol football stadium tour of boca juniors and river plate (the two biggest football teams in argentina). the tour was amazing, our tour guide translated the whole tour for us to english so we got a great experience, we did the football tour with tangol, and saw both the la bombonera as well as the monumental stadium. we arranged the booking with julieta, who was very helpful in getting the booking done last minute. the tour itself was fascinating and the guide was very knowledgeable. he himself is a river plate supporter, and knew lots of little anecdotes on el clasico (the river vs. boca derby). overall i highly suggest this tour as it is also a very safe way to experience the neighbourhood of la boca..

Iconic Stadiums | 3. “La Bombonera”

...

Present in tours

The blue and yellow terraces stands want to completely surround the pitch, but they can't because there are modern stands on one side. Seen from above it looks like a flat structure, as if the walls were just adornments reflecting the colour of team jersey.

The structure is immense and extremely steep. It makes people dizzy with vertigo, and creates a shadow. The high stairs seem to be in freefall; like slides running from the highest point of the stadium to one sole destination - the bottom. Behind the goals, the crush barriers disorderly, at different heights, attempt to avoid this effect. They become visual tricks when the stadium's empty; obstacles in an unmanageable labyrinth. This all leads to one sensation: that Boca Juniors' stadium is living creature.

The club's original stadium was located just a few blocks away, where the Usina del Arte now stands. For some the local team is a source of pride for the neighbourhood, a focus for the country's identity and an international brand. La Bombonera, then, is the materialisation of this emotionally explosive phenomenon.

At the lowest point is the tunnel, the path to the centre of the world. Above is the giant screen and the unreachable lights lost in the sky. The cables and pipes are visible; there are uneven arches and confetti from the previous Sunday. La Bombonera is not a perfect god; it's more human than that. When the supporters decide it's time, everyone jumps in unison and the stadium, rather than shake, beats like a heart.

Boca Juniors Stadium: Fun Facts and Tips for Travelers

Jed Rothenberg

By Jed Rothenberg | September 14, 2018

Boca Juniors' stadium in La Boca

Boca Juniors’ La Bombonera stadium is a must see in Buenos Aires! See why Coca Cola struggled to close a deal with the stadium and what manure has to do with their fans.

La Bombonera stadium, or Estadio Alberto J. Armando, is home to the world famous Boca Juniors football club and such players as Carlos Tevez, Martin Palermo, Juan Román Riquelme and some guy named Diego Maradona. 🙂

An almost mythical stadium, La Bombonera is renowned as one of the best in South America, possibly the world. It isn’t necessarily it’s unique build that draws so much attention, but rather the acoustics of the steeply built sections and consistent 85%+ attendance . Even for a “meh” Boca Juniors vs fill-in-the-blank-chump-team the ultras sections will fill to capacity and tickets will be squabbled over in the black market.

What’s the deal with Boca Juniors tickets?

As of 2012 Boca Juniors tickets are no longer sold to the public. They are only distributed to “socios” or card carrying members of Boca Juniors. You can reserve Boca Juniors tickets through us, but if you decide to go elsewhere please be aware that a “too good to be true deal” is likely a fake season ticket card. Falsified or cancelled season cards have become as common as has the demand to see a Boca game.

Boca Juniors stadium tips:

  • This neighborhood has two tourist friendly areas. One is called “El Caminito” and the other is the area (closely) around the stadium. Outside of these areas the neighborhood should be considered unsafe for exploring and has a history of robberies happening to those tourists who were too bold.
  • With a capacity just shy of 50,000 you’ll see standing sections, stairs and entryways packed for big games so arrive early. The stadium will literally shake in the upper decks when a goal is scored on days like a Superclasico (Boca/River).
  • The atmosphere on game day is absolutely electric, but if you happen to come in off season or if Boca Juniors are not playing at home during your time here you can swing by and visit the grounds anyway. Stadium tours have grown in popularity as more and more “grounds-hoppers” make their way to South America. Do note that stadium tours are rarely available on Boca game days, national holidays and if the weather is particularly bad.

Here’s a little taste of what the stadium is like on a game day:

Fun Facts and What You Should Know

The stadium earned its nick name “La Bombonera” or “chocolate box” because it’s shape resembles just that- an old school sweets container. Plans to increase seating or create an entirely new Boca Juniors stadium have fallen victim to a cocktail of resistance. La Boca’s neighbors, business owners, season ticket holders and Argentina’s long term arch nemesis, inflation, cause the attempts to fall flat before breaking ground.

River Plate, Boca Juniors’ nemesis, actually shared the same neighborhood La Boca early in their history! River Plate eventually moved to Belgrano and founded the largest stadium in Argentina, El Monumental .

The area before the stadium was built housed a manure production facility. This unfortunate fact armed rival fans with their favorite nickname for Boca Juniors fans; “ bostero ” (bo-stair-oh) or someone that collects and works with horse excrement. The nickname is embraced though among fellow fans and you’ll hear Boca fans proudly answer “ de que cuadro sos? ” with “ Soy Bostero por su puesto “.

Boca Juniors stadium, La Boca

Boca Juniors’ arch rival River Plate’s colors are red and white. When Coca Cola was trying to close a deal with La Bombonera to be the exclusive beverage of the stadium Boca forced them to change their logo ! No red and white was allowed and to this day all Coke signs are either navy blue or black and white. To say the hatred runs deep between these teams is an understatement.

Ranking the 10 best stadium atmospheres in world football.

Crowds can have a huge impact in football and help to drive their team towards victory. Here are the best stadium atmospheres in world football.

  • Signal Iduna Park features Borussia Dortmund's Yellow Wall - a unique, intimidating, and explosive atmosphere.
  • Celtic Park offers an explosive UK atmosphere with memorable European wins, including the 2012 victory against Lionel Messi's Barcelona.
  • La Bombonera is the best atmosphere in football and is likened to a religious experience for Boca Juniors fans.

There are many atmospheres across the world that are renowned for their intensity, passion, and noise. Whether it be Anfield on a European night or the San Siro for Inter and AC Milan matches, fans can play a huge part in the result of a match and drive the home team forward.

Pre-match tifos and anthems also help the selection process when choosing the best atmospheres in the world. Fan displays and collective singing prior to a match can help to create an intimidating atmosphere that gives their team an edge and adds to the sense of occasion. So, here are the 10 best atmospheres in world football.

Ranking factors

The top 10 atmospheres in world football is a subjective matter. All football fans will have different opinions on certain home atmospheres, so it is important to establish some measures to put in place for the rankings.

  • Noise created in the stadium: The visceral roar of supporters helping to drive the team forward in big moments.
  • Historical matches impacted by fans: Famous matches and wins by home teams that have been helped by the atmosphere inside the stadium.
  • Fan groups who help to drive the atmosphere: Supporter groups who are well-known across the world for the impact they have on the atmosphere.

10 The Marshall Jozef Pilsudski's Municipal Stadium of Legia Warsaw

Legia warsaw.

Legia Warsaw are renowned across Europe for the passionate atmosphere they create for home games, especially in European competitions. The ultras who are lcoated in the 'Zyleta' part of the ground are well-known for their pre-match banners, which have been extremely political in the past.

Earlier this year, UEFA shut the ultras stand at Legia Warsaw due to a clash with the police before a UEFA Conference League match. The ultras responded by revealing a lego-inspired tifo in the adjacent stand with an expletive-laden message. The display was circulated widely on social media and was only a small glimpse into the atmosphere created by the Legia fans, as well as the controversy that surrounds the ultras group.

9 Stadio Diego Armando Maradona

Named after the legend Diego Maradona, who helped guide Napoli to two Scudettos, Napoli's home stadium is one of the most intimidating in Europe. For every home match, there are flares and banners aplenty from both Curva A and Curva B at opposite ends of the stadium.

The stadium is old-fashioned and in need of major renovation to bring it up to modern requirements. In fact, Napoli president Aurelio De Laurentiis once labelled the venue a "toilet". The outdated arena remains one of the most fierce in Europe, with the visceral roar of the Napoli fanatics often proving to be a decisive factor in big matches.

Why Inter and AC Milan Share the San Siro

8 rams park, galatasaray.

Galatasaray's home stadium is called Rams Park due to sponsorship reasons and is always known as one of the hardest cauldrons to enter as an away team in European competitions. There are many ultras groups associated with the Turkish club, but UltrAslan are the most well-known. Aslan is a reference to the 'Lions', which is Galatasaray's nickname.

Like the Napoli ultras, the Galatasaray fans are famous for their tifos and pyrotechnic displays. European matches at Rams Park are notorious for the fireworks and pyro displays, lighting up the stands in the yellow and red of Galatasaray. The most raucous atmosphere experienced at Rams Park is the game against fierce rivals, Fenerbahce. This derby is a complex one, with incidents and controversy between the two teams spanning decades.

7 Cairo International Stadium

Al ahly and zamalek (sc).

With a capacity of 75,000 and two teams with passionate supporters, Cairo International Stadium is able to create one of the best atmospheres in the world. Al Ahly and Zamalek SC groundshare this stadium for big matches, and when the teams meet, foreign referees are flown in to manage the game.

The police and security presence are extremely strict for the derby matches between the teams at Cairo International Stadium. The political tension and ultras groups creates one of the most intense rivalries and atmospheres in world football. As well as hosting club football, the stadium has hosted Africa Cup of Nations matches, including the 2006 final, which saw the hosts, Egypt, beat Ivory Coast on penalties in the final in front of over 74,000 people.

6 Estadio Mas Monumental

River plate.

Estadio Mas Monumental is one of football's most notorious atmospheres. River Plate fans are well-known for their displays and raucous support, especially in games against their rivals, Boca Juniors. Copa Libertadores knockout matches are always sold out and filled with over 80,000 passionate Argentine supporters in the red and white colours of River Plate. The stadium also hosts Argentina qualifying matches for their FIFA World Cup qualifying campaigns.

Before this year's Superclasico against Boca Juniors, River Plate fans produced a stunning display with red and white ribbons and flares across all four stands of the ground. The River Plate fans were bouncing and chanting in unison as both sets of players entered the Estadio Mas Monumental cauldron.

In fifth place is Anfield, the home of the six-time European champions, Liverpool. Anfield is most well-known for its atmosphere on European nights under the lights, which was on display for their miraculous comeback against Barcelona in the 2019 UEFA Champions League, when they beat the Spanish giants 4-0 in the second leg. The anthem of "You'll Never Walk Alone" before the match always adds to the sense of occasion.

There has been a growing concern in recent years that the expansion of the capacity at Anfield will impact the atmosphere at Anfield. However, this year has seen the ground at its very best, with raucous atmospheres against both Luton Town and Manchester City. After the 1-1 draw against City, Pep Guardiola described Anfield as "like a tsuami".

Anfield atmosphere got to Man City - Guardiola

Ac milan and inter milan.

The San Siro has been the joint home of AC Milan and Inter Milan since 1947. Both sets of fans have produced stunning choreographic works before matches over the years, particularly before the Derby della Madonnina between the two teams. Before the Champions League semi-final against Inter Milan last season, AC Milan produced a mouthwatering devil display with the words "Forza Milan" displayed in the colours red and black.

This stadium is one of the most historic and well-recognised grounds in world football. It is an ageing venue, which explains why both tenants are looking at moving away from the ground in the next few years. Milan City Council declared that the stadium will not be demolished in the event that both sides end their tenancy. If you are an avid football fan and want to experience the intensity of Milan and Inter home matches, then hurry before it is too late.

3 Signal Iduna Park

Borussia dortmund.

Borussia Dortmund's single-tiered Yellow Wall is one of the most striking stands in world football. The stand is steep and traditionally coloured in yellow and black by fan displays before matches. For fans looking to witness a truly unique stadium and stand, they should look no further than Signal Iduna Park. The new South Stand at Tottenham Hotspur's new stadium is even inspired by the Yellow Wall at Dortmund.

With an average attendance of over 81,000 fans, Dortmund fans are able to create a hostile atmosphere for their opponents. When asked about the atmosphere at Signal Iduna Park, Jurgen Klopp once said: "Every time you walk out onto the pitch it's like being born again, except with a lot more applause. You come out, and it just explodes."

2 Celtic Park

The best UK atmosphere on the list is Celtic's home stadium. With a capacity of over 60,000, Celtic Park is explosive for European home games and Old Firm matches against Rangers. Like Liverpool, Celtic fans sing "You'll Never Walk Alone" prior to home games, which creates a sense of togetherness for an ardent group of supporters.

The 'Green Brigade' regularly produce stunning tifos and displays before matches. Although Celtic have struggled in European competitions in recent years, they have pulled off some memorable wins under the lights at Celtic Park. Notably, they beat Barcelona 2-1 in 2012, prompting Lionel Messi to say that "The games against Celtic were special and I want to remember them.”

Old Trafford, Anfield, Ibrox, Celtic Park: The 50 best stadiums in Britain have been ranked

1 la bombonera, boca juniors.

In terms of the stadium experience and level of passion inside one venue, La Bombonera is unmatched. Boca Juniors' home stadium is full of blue and yellow colours outside and inside the ground, with every football match treated like a religious experience for the Boca fans. It is nicknamed 'the chocolate box' due to the design of the stadium, which resembles an unconvential 'D' shape.

La Bombonera is especially noisy and intense for the visit of rival River Plate in the Superclasico. The rivalry is not just on the pitch, with fans of both clubs intent on creating pre-match displays that are better than what the opposing set of fans produced in previous games. Journalist Celeste Moure once said: “Going to a futbol match in La Bombonera stadium is to soccer fans what witnessing a recording session at Abbey Road studios is to music fans.”
