Madhai National Park | Satpura National Park | Tawa Dam

Madhai or madai- satpura national park.

Madhai gate is the commonly used gate for most wildlife safaris in Satpura National Park. Therefore Satpura is also commonly known as Madhai National Park, especially by locals. Despite it being relatively famed, the story behind ‘Madhai’ is less explored and known to few.

Madhai was a tribal village nestled on the foothills of the Chutkidev mountains of the Satpura range.

Madhai’s journey started out as a small reserve forest in 1857, that went on to become a wildlife sanctuary in 1975. Later it was established as a tiger reserve in the year 2000 with an area of about 1400 sq km.

Madhai had a small, tribal group of people, primarily dependent on forest products and farming. According to some of the locals, ‘Madhai’ or ‘Madhana’, in the local language means “carnival”. Carnivals and fun fairs are common recreational activities around Indian villages since the beginning, and that applies to Madhai as well.

In 1978, after the construction of Tawa dam , the entire village moved outside the park, so as to benefit themselves with different provisions made by the local government. The village got split and the families settled down into different pockets of the micro village settlements, on the other side of the river Denwa. This locality as a whole is now considered Madhai .

Denwa river (later Tawa reservoir), a lifeline for the villagers and the surrounding ecosystem, flows ahead to meet with the Tawa river.

On the banks of the Tawa river is a huge dam with 13 gates constructed for irrigation and a small hydropower plant. The construction of the Tawa Dam began in 1958 and was completed in 1978. The mean depth of this reservoir is approximately 11 meters (Indian Council of Agriculture Research, 2000). 

Madhai Forest Rest House

Earlier where the bustling village used to come alive, today there lies a colonial-style, cozy forest rest house popularly called Madhai Forest Rest House .

One can stay at the Forest Resthouse, right next to the gate of the core area, and enjoy the enthralling experience. It overlooks the Denwa River on one side and the beautiful grassland of Madhai on the other.

Albeit basic, the stay here is comfortable if you come during the right season. There is no provision for air conditioning, running hot water, or TV. The entire establishment is run by solar power, so do expect dim LED bulbs. 

You can also enjoy amazing views of the Denwa River from Madhai Forest Rest House. It is a common sight to see deers and antelopes strolling around the gardens around.

The real luxury of this place lies in the very pristine, fresh air. After all, what luxury matches the feeling of being in the lap of untouched nature? 

Most of the resorts and hotels in Satpura are located around Madhai. Madhai is also the starting point for walking safaris in Satpura and also jeep safaris in Satpura.

Madai Tiger Reserve and Tawa Dam

Tawa Reservoir is a reservoir on the Tawa River in central India. It is located in Itarsi of Narmadapuram District of Madhya Pradesh state, above Betul district. The reservoir was formed by the construction of the Tawa Dam, which began in 1958 and was completed in 1978. Satpura Tiger Reserve (STR) also known as Satpura National Park is located in the Narmadapuram district of Madhya Pradesh in India. Its name is derived from the Satpura range. It covers an area of 524 km2 (202 sq mi). Satpura National Park, along with the adjoining Bori and Pachmarhi wildlife sanctuaries, provides 2,200 km2 (850 sq mi) of unique central Indian highland ecosystem. It was set up in 1981.

The nearest airport is RajaBhoj Airport in the city of Bhopal, Madhya Pradesh (70 km) from Narmadapuram and (120 km) from Tawa which has daily flight service to Delhi and Mumbai. One can easily get taxi from Bhopal to Tawa.

Madhya pradesh hospitality at its best

When the property and the location you are staying in are already excellent, it's the small things that count to make the experience truly memorable. Located on the banks of the serene river denva, the bison resort by madhya pradesh tourism is the perfect choice for a sojourn in the satpuras. The safari booking office is right outside the property and all vehicles for the safaris leave from here too. The rooms are cosy and well appointed, equipped with everything from an ac to room heater, depending on whether you arrive here during chilly winter or extremely hot summer. The view from the balcony, overlooking the denva, takes the cake. The tariff includes breakfast, lunch and dinner, which makes it value for money. The food is delicious with lots of options to choose from. I liked the fact that in addition to the regular paneer/kofta gravies, they also serve vegetables like sponge gourd (gilkhi. My husband relished the fish curry made from a fresh catch of rohu. A word particularly for the staff that is very warm and accommodating, true to madhya pradesh hospitality. They usually lay out a buffet spread for lunch and dinner but because we and a couple of other guests checked in past lunchtime, they served the food on every table individually so that it was fresh and hot and the taste didn't suffer because of reheating. They remained helpful throughout, respecting the fact that guests visit the property primarily to explore the forest.

Excellent stay

Stayed with family for 2 days, stay was most comfortable. Location is excellent, like an embedded gem on the tourist map of mp. Beautifully carved resort amid-st serenity and untouched beauty of nature all over. All cottage rooms are spacious with all modern essential amenities and adjacent to wide span tawa river dam backwaters and overlooking high hill range of satpur hills behind the river. Widespread green lawn, amusement park, a small swimming pool and lush green garden with variety of beautiful flowers. Wide space to sit in open all the day watching river and high hills. Special mention of open air buffet dinner on weekends with camp fire and food cooked on chulha. Lots of motor boats, just at the doorstep of the resort, to take tourists to have a tour to watch extreme natural beauty of hundreds of small islands with dense vegetation. Sighting of cheetan, sambar, deer, neelgay, peacock and many colorful birds from a very close look from your boat. Opt for a half day safari or a night safari to witness wilderness leopard or tiger. Mouthwatering breakfast, lunch and dinner were outstanding. Courteous and dedicated staff made us speechless who are ready to serve you just at a click. Special mention of ganesh serving food in dining hall is a must. Front desk officer sonia ji is available to guide from dawn to dusk. And finally hats off to khan sir, d gm for his effortless duty round the clock looking after the entire resort.

Good experience of stay with a focus on safari

Great location, beautiful view, comparable to budget MPT Bison Resort, Madhai, food and accommodation is basic yet adequate. Very hospitable staff. Book safari online before you come. Local safari office just opposite the resort and do is the boat jetty for crossing the lake to the reserve forest. Seek guidance on choice of zone from MPT Bison Resort, Madhai reception staff. Each zone has a different rate. Great location, budget segment accommodation where amenities are basic, food is basic, nothing fancy but simple and adequate. Very hospitable staff. At the time of checking in, check the sheets and the blanket cover in particular. They do wash these but the blanket cover may not get the required attention from housekeeping. Food is basic. They have a menu in the room. Ask the restaurant on what is available from the menu at the first instance. Particularly useful for the snacks in the evening. The location is amazing. Beautiful view of the lake and very conveniently located close to the boat jetty. Staff are very hospitable. Do take tips about which zones to cover for your safari from them. Book your safari online before you come for greatest convenience. Request for breakfast to be packed for you and the driver and guide if you go on morning safari on the previous night.

Excellent location. Helpful manager but ridiculous staff at restaurant. Compulsory buffet which is must has not much available nearby, but it isn't a buffet its just being distributed. You have to search paneer in the manner vegetable, ask for more than one scoop of ice cream and the waiters are like you have created biggest sin of life. Even if guests are less they will not serve you hot roti. Will force you to eat the rough and hard roti kept in hot case. Upper rooms offer slightly better view. Do the cutki devi safari in morning positively. Timing of government on your permit are wrong. They will not enter before sunrise and exit immediately at sunset i.e. 5. 30 in winters.

Property! view from the rooms is amazing! i stayed in the first floor room! you can sit at the pool side and enjoy the beautiful view of denwa backwaters and huge satpur hills ! staff was friendly and supportive! lunch is served little late, when we reached at 1pm, we were told lunch buffet will be ready at 1:30pm but it actually was ready at 1:45 or 1:50pm ! this was little strange but otherwise the overall experience at the property was really good and would definitely recommend everyone to visit the property!

We have planned the weekend trip with 2 families. The stay was very comfortable. Only 12 rooms are available so have to book in advance. The rooms were a bit small but the attached balcony gives a beautiful view of the backwaters and landscape. Dinner arrangement was special. Children also enjoyed the pool very much. It a nice place to visit out of the city life for a day in the nature with a lot of flora and fauna. The forest gate is just outside the resort so its a added advantage that you don't have to travel early in the morning.

Mount Fuji view to be blocked as tourists overcrowd popular photo spot

Fujikawaguchiko town official says choice to erect huge barrier is ‘regrettable’ and last resort

A huge barrier to block views of Mount Fuji will be installed at a popular photo spot by Japanese authorities exasperated by crowds of badly behaved foreign tourists.

Construction of the mesh net – 2.5 metres (8ft) high and the length of a cricket pitch at 20 metres – will begin as early as next week, an official from Fujikawaguchiko town said on Friday.

“It’s regrettable we have to do this, because of some tourists who can’t respect rules,” leaving litter behind and ignoring traffic regulations, he told Agence France-Presse.

It is the latest direct action in Japan against over-tourism after residents of Kyoto’s geisha district banned visitors from small private alleys this year.

Record numbers of overseas tourists are travelling to Japan, where the number of monthly visitors exceeded 3 million in March for the first time.

Mount Fuji, Japan’s highest mountain, can be photographed from many spots in the resort town of Fujikawaguchiko. This viewpoint is particularly popular because the majestic – and active – volcano appears behind a Lawson convenience store, which are ubiquitous in Japan.

Due to this visual juxtaposition, “a reputation has spread on social media that this spot is very Japanese, making it a popular photo location”, said the town official, who declined to be named.

The mostly non-Japanese tourists are overcrowding a stretch of pavement next to the Lawson shop, he said.

After traffic signs and repeated warnings from security guards were ignored, the town in Yamanashi region decided on the huge screen as a last resort.

The measure is also meant to protect a nearby dental clinic against tourists who sometimes park there without permission and have even been seen climbing on to the roof of the clinic to get the perfect shot, the official said.

The town wished it had not been forced to take action, the official said, adding that the current plan was for the screen to stay up until the situation improves.

Japan has been a booming tourist destination since pandemic-era border restrictions were lifted, and the government has been working hard to boost visitor numbers. But this has not been universally welcomed, including in Kyoto, where people have complained of snap-happy tourists harassing the city’s immaculately dressed geisha.

This summer, hikers using the most popular route to climb Mount Fuji will be charged ¥2,000 each (£10.50, $13.35, A$20.50), with numbers capped to ease congestion.

Other destinations are also struggling with over-tourism. On Thursday, Venice began charging day-trippers to enter the city, while last week tens of thousands of people across the Canary Islands called for a freeze on visitor numbers .

Tourism master plan to revive Great Keppel (Woppa) Island features eco-resort, jetty and sewage plant

Once an 1980s party paradise, Great Keppel (Woppa) Island could soon be transformed back into a tourism mecca featuring an eco-resort, glamping space and conservation areas.

After more than 15 years of uncertainty, the Queensland government has released a master plan for the island's future.

Big ticket items include allowances for an eco-resort, glamping, an access jetty, new sewage infrastructure and more cultural experiences.

"It's a beautiful island," Minister for State Development and Infrastructure Grace Grace said.

"We'll be building boardwalks, we'll be putting the infrastructure in to meet the visitation and tourism increases.

"We'll be looking at concept designs, we'll be looking at marina facilities, we'll be doing all that work."

Buildings in ruins

Sydney-based developer Tower Holdings bought the leases to the site in 2006 but shut the doors two years later.

Although a number of developers have tried to revive the resort, it has sat idle ever since and buildings are in ruins.

The Queensland government has been working with the Livingstone Shire Council, local operators and traditional owners for more than five years to develop the master plan for the island.

Queensland Tourism Minister Michael Healy said the government would put $30 million towards implementing the plan in partnership with the local council.

"Our $30 million investment provides a significant boost towards implementing the concept master plan and delivering the priority actions, such as a new wastewater treatment plant and improving maritime access," he said.

Meeting Queensland's tourism targets

Despite more than 50,000 visitors each year, it is hoped the new plan will attract people for longer stays on the island and bring even more visitors to central Queensland. 

Capricorn Enterprise chief executive Mary Carroll has welcomed the initiatives. 

"This master plan is the critical first step in ensuring that the necessary technical bodies of work can be expedited by government to pave the way to attract sustainable development as soon as possible for our destination to help achieve the state's Towards Tourism 2032 targets," she said.

"One quarter of the Capricorn Coast's tourism economy is generated because of Great Keppel Island (GKI), which increases to over 50 per cent with the realisation of the GKI master plan vision."

She said visitors to the island generated $49.9 million in revenue for local businesses and that would increase by another $95.9 million with the implementation of the master plan, "bringing the total visitor spend to $145.8 million".

Tristan Jones has worked on the Island for five years and said the biggest issues were wastewater, a lack of fresh water and getting onto GKI safely.

"The sooner we can get some sort of mini marina or something like that built where we can land the ferry safely, the better," he said.

He said when he speaks to visitors, many of them talk about seeing the Island returned to its "former glory". 

Traditional owners have also welcomed the provisions in the new master plan for cultural tourism.

Woppaburra Land Trust chairperson Valmai Smith said it would create on-country employment.

"The rejuvenation of Great Keppel Island (Woppa) will benefit the Woppaburra people by caring for country and maintaining our cultural and spiritual connection to the island," she said.

"It will also create on-country employment and economic opportunities for Woppaburra people, and we look forward to working in partnership with other businesses, organisations and all three levels of government to realise these opportunities."

Work is expected to start this year.

Saudi Arabia plans to open the first region of its Neom megacity by the end of the year.

The island of Sindalah will provide the first physical glimpse into the ambitious desert project, which has reportedly been scaled back from its initial plans due to financial struggles .

Developers say they want the island to be an "exclusive gateway to the stunning Red Sea," adding that they planned to cater to luxury clientele and the global yachting community.

Neom recently ended investor roadshows in China by confirming the luxury island resort would open this year, Arab News reported . It's set to have three luxury hotels, a golf course and sports club, beach club, marina, and dozens of restaurants and shops.

In January Marriott International said it had signed an agreement to bring Apartments by Marriott Bonvoy to Sindalah. Chadi Hauch of the hotel operator said the concept was a "great fit" for the island and reflected a "growing desire for premium and luxury apartment-style accommodation" from travelers.

The following month Saudi music entertainment company, MDLBEAST, announced it would operate the Sindalah Beach Club on the island.

Vives, Neom's chief urban planning and islands officer, said in a press release that Sindalah will be a "new model for luxury travel and living."

Capturing the luxury tourism market

The Saudi government's focus on the luxury market is an attempt to distinguish itself from nearby Dubai, part of the United Arab Emirates.

Sindalah is one of the more realistic elements of Neom's futuristic plans . It pales in comparison to structures like the mirrored "horizontal skyscraper" known as The Line.

"It's less ambitious in scope and scale," Ulrichsen said. "That might mean that it's more realistic to open first."

Recent reports have indicated the Saudis may be facing a harsh reality when it comes to f inancing some of the megaprojects included in Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman's Vision 2030 project .

Previous deadlines have already been pushed back for some of Neom's more ambitious projects.

Earlier this month, Bloomberg reported that the Gulf Kingdom had reduced estimates for the number of people expected to live in The Line .

The report said the realities of some of the trillion-dollar investments included in the Vision 2030 project were starting to cause alarm at the highest level of the country's government.

Neom did not immediately respond to a request for comment from Business Insider.
