The brick graves and a few preserved gravestones of the residents of the long-gone city are still present in this cemetery. It is impossible to determine how many people are lying here.

Frank Pate Park, one of Port St. Joe’s earliest known parks, is located close to US Highways 98 and 71.

The main attractions of this Park are the recreational activities in St. Joseph Bay, which may be accessed by a sizable boat launch station with a central pier.

The Thirsty Goat is a small bar with a lounge space and outside seating that faces enormous TV screens.

Every night they have cocktail specials, and most of the time, guests just so happen to be in the mood for margaritas on the night of the tequila specials.

This bar has mixologist Lacey, a friendly and chatty waitress that prepares and offers different drink recipes.

After a day on the lake, the conveniently situated Thirsty Goat is a great spot to go and relax. The terrace has great live music, and the cocktails are adequately made.

Port St. Joe, Florida, is one of those towns that everyone needs to experience during their lifetime. This coastal town is located in Gulf County, Florida. Port St. Joe is located approximately 35 miles southeast of Panama City along U.S. Highway 98. I have visited this town several times in the past few years, and find myself planning a return visit as soon as I make it home.

I was introduced to Port St. Joe while on a press trip and was recently invited back for a return visit. Each time I have visited, the beautiful beaches continue to call me back.

I love the small-town vibe and the history that is exhibited in several places around town. When traveling America’s Scenic highways and byways, Port St. Joe makes a good road trip. The Big Bend Scenic Byway is near Port St. Joe, which makes for an ideal place to stay and play while driving these scenic routes.

10 Things to Do in Port St. Joe, Florida

1. cape san blas light house.

You can climb the 130+ steps to the top of the Cape San Blas Light House for a stunning view of the Gulf of Mexico. A few years ago, this lighthouse found its new permanent home, as it had been moved through the years due to erosion and hurricanes. It was on July 15, 2014, that the Cape San Blas Lighthouse reopened in its new permanent location. The two Keepers Quarters and the Oil Shed were also relocated to Core Park in Port St. Joe to help keep the structures intact. This lighthouse cannot be missed while in town, as it’s prominently displayed in a primary location. This lighthouse is one of my favorites of all time, as the views from above, along with its setting, are truly remarkable.

2. Horseback Riding On The Beach

Riding a horse on the beach is something that many people dream of doing. Rockin’ M Ranch offers horseback riding on the beach at Cape San Blas. They specialize in horseback riding on the beach and offer beginner-friendly lessons. Rockin’ M Ranch has been taking people of all ages riding since 1996 and the staff cherish both their customers and horses. They love creating a memorable experience for you on horseback on the beach. The folks who run this business are patient and offer terrific guidance for the novice horseback rider. Riders are paired up with the best horse according to the riders’ experience and size. You will want to make a reservation before you head to Salinas Park to hop on your horse as these rides are very popular. Riders can make reservations by calling 850-227-6117.

If you want a little extra fun, I would highly suggest that you book a sunset ride. Allow yourself a couple of hours for this activity, which includes your drive time.

3. T. H. Stone Memorial St. Joseph Peninsula State Park

A visit to T. H. Stone Memorial St. Joseph Peninsula State Park is in order when you explore Port St. Joe. Hurricane Michael caused tremendous damage to the area in October of 2018, but fortunately, the south part of this state park is currently open. You can kayak, paddleboard, swim, snorkel, and search for shells on the beach. This area is also very popular for bird enthusiasts, as there are many beach-nesting birds along the coastline.

For up-to-date information about the park, stop in at the Gulf County Welcome Center upon your arrival into town. You can easily spend a whole day in this park as there is so much to see and do.

Camp at St. Joseph Peninsula State Park

St. Joseph Peninsula State Park includes two campground areas for visitors that can accommodate tents and RVs. 

Shady Pines is a modern site equipped with electric hookups, water, a fire ring, and picnic tables. There is also a dump station and restrooms with showers.  On the other hand, the Wilderness Preserve area of the park offers primitive camping, without water or electricity. Pets are not permitted and it’s not accessible by vehicle.

4. St. Joseph Bay Buffer Preserve

The St. Joseph Bay Buffer Preserve is home to bald eagles and other birds that frequent the area. The visitor center offers information and history about the area. There are also numerous multi-use trails for hiking, biking, horseback riding, birding, and, of course, photography. This area offers fantastic wildlife viewing opportunities.

Bring plenty of water and bug spray. It’s also important not to rely on your cell phone, as cell service can be spotty out in these preserves. A visit here offers a day to reconnect with nature and slow things down a little bit. The visitor center is also a resource for scientists, students, and anyone interested in nature projects. Tram tours are available throughout the year on specific days, as well.

5. Kayak In Port St. Joe Bay

Kayaking in the bay is a fun way to enjoy the water and nature. Happy Ours Kayak offers a fun guided eco-tour of the bay during which you’ll kayak and be given a lot of information. While on this kayak adventure, I was able to see several baby shrimp and other fish floating nearby. Our guide was very knowledgeable and offered tips on how to take care of our waterways.

The best thing about kayaking here is that you can choose the type of kayaking adventure you want. Guided tours, individual trips, and delivery of rental gear are all offered. I strongly recommend placing this adventure high on your to-do list as this is a great way to experience Port St. Joe.

6. Shopping In Port St. Joe

You can easily spend a large portion of your day shopping in this U.S. beach town. Shop owners are helpful and they have products that you will want to claim as your own. The St. Joe Soap Company won me over on my last visit. I have fallen in love with the lotion that I was given while there. They have an online shop and you can find their products in shops in Port St. Joe.

Bayside Florist and Gifts located in historic downtown Port St. Joe is a great place to find beach decorations, jewelry, and memorabilia. Joseph’s Cottage is another fun place to find gifts, locally made products, and home furnishings that you will have a hard time passing up. You will want to plan a minimum of two hours to shop as you will find each store unique and fun.

7. Collect Seashells

It’s no secret that shelling is a big thing in this charming small Floridian town on the Gulf Coast . Spend some time beachcombing and shelling for a memorable experience. You will most likely be surprised by the different sizes of shells that you find. This activity is not only relaxing, but it’s also a fun way to enjoy strolling the beach. This is one of the best go-at-your-own-pace activities you will find anywhere. Purchase a shell bag in one of the shops in town, and you will be ready to shell all day long.

8. Going Coastal Bonfire

Going Coastal Cabanas and More offers a fun way to enjoy the beach. I had the opportunity to enjoy a Going Coastal bonfire on the beach while in Port St. Joe and it was a fun way to enjoy the sunset. The rental times vary based on sunset times. Call 270-839-4699 to reserve your bonfire-on-the-beach experience.

9. Beach Yoga

The beach is a significant feature of Port St. Joe, and you will find it easy to embrace it once you arrive in town. Yoga is a fun way to experience the beach and Port St. Joe. If you enjoy meeting new people, connecting with nature, and yoga, you will enjoy this experience. Follow Sunbird Yoga’s Facebook page to learn when and where yoga is taking place. There is no fee to participate; just show up and be ready to have fun doing yoga in an outdoor setting.

10. Indian Pass 

The small town of Indian Pass just eight miles from Port St. Joe feels like a world away. To vacation here is to experience Old Florida and Gulf County in a natural beach setting. 

With miles of soft dunes and pure waters, you can ride a horse on the Indian Pass Beach with Two-Bit Stable, or enjoy miles of uninterrupted beach walks without worrying about crowds or traffic jams.

If you are heading out towards Indian Pass, stop at the Water’s Edge General Store to pick up some snacks, beer, wine, or fishing and beach gear.

Best Restaurants In Port St. Joe

There are many wonderful choices when it comes to dining in Port St. Joe . Sweet Bunz , located at 108 1st St., is where you need to kick off your day. Homemade donuts and top-notch customer service make for a wonderful start to your day.

I would highly recommend eating at the Shipwreck Raw Bar , too. A cup of Shipwreck gumbo and oysters make for the perfect meal in this fun restaurant located at 7008 W. Highway 98.

Provisions is located at 222 Reid Avenue in the historic downtown Port St. Joe. My advice is to order anything that looks like Southern comfort to you, which will more than likely be the whole menu. The talented chefs in all of the restaurants in Port St. Joe will impress you with their love of cooking.

If you are looking for an awesome road trip destination this is it! There are so many fun things to do in Port St Joe, Florida, and all of Gulf County. Beautiful beaches , scenic drives , outdoor activities like boat rides, and kayaking. Plus a historic downtown and yummy restaurants.

Below we share our top recommendations on what you will want to do when you visit Port St. Joe located in Gulf County Florida. This area is also known as the Forgotten Coast and we see why. The beaches were empty and it was not the crazy busyness you find in other beach towns in Florida.

We worked in partnership with Gulf County, Florida, and spent a week exploring all the fun things to do in the area.

Port St. Joe is located in the Florida panhandle about an hour east of Panama City. Gulf County includes Cape San Blas, Indian Pass, Port St. Joe, St Joe Beach, and Wewahitchka.

Hurricane Michael hit the area hard in October 2018. Over the last 2 years they have done a lot of work rebuilding. The work is by no means finished, but they have done an amazing job so far

Bonfire On The Beach

Going Coastal Cabanas and More gets everything set up for you on the beach. Chairs, a cabana, a fire pit, logs, a fire starter, and even s’mores. All you have to do is show up!

Having a bonfire on the beach always sounds like a great idea but the hassle of doing it may make it not happen. Not in this case! Literally, just show up and start the fire. When you are done you can leave and the team at Going Coastal Cabanas will take care of the rest.

This was an awesome way to watch the sunset out over the Gulf of Mexico while sitting around a fire and roasting marshmallows.

All About Fun Charters

Head out with Captain Charlene from All About Fun Charters for an awesome boat adventure on the bay! We went out in December so it was a bit chilly, but perfect when the sun came out and no one else was on the water.

If you go in the warmer months, Captain Charlene will take you to her favorite snorkeling spot where the kids can snorkel in 2 feet of water and find all sorts of sea critters in the crystal clear water!

You can bring them on the boat and Captain Charlene will teach you all about what you found!

We also saw a pod of about 15 dolphins when we were out on the water and they stayed and played and put on a show for us for 20 minutes.

Captain Charlene is also able to put together custom tours if you would like her to take you to a picnic spot only accessible via boat or if you had something else in mind. Just give her a call and you can figure it out!

Rent kayaks or paddle-boards from Happy Ours and put them in right at their house/shop located on the bay. You can then go out and kayak in the bay. We didn’t realize that the water was so clear and shallow – it made the kids feel totally safe on the kayaks.

Plus you can see everything right in the water! Our guide was able to tell us all about what we were seeing and to teach us about the history of Port St. Joe!

We also went in and through the tall grass with the kayaks and had fun just being out on the bay in the kayaks.

They also rent bikes – which would be fun to take on the bike trail that runs along the Cape.

Kayak Fishing Port St Joe

Our guide on the kayaks was Brad from Kayak Fishing Port St Joe. He can take you on an ecotour in the kayaks or take you out fishing!

He was super knowledgeable and it was a great way to learn more about the bay and the area.

Off The Map Expeditions

Head out to Wewahitchka, Florida, and Dead Lakes State Park! This is a really interesting lake with trees growing straight out of the water.

You can head out on a pontoon boat with Off The Map Expeditions for a tour to check it out. Or you can go on a guided kayak tour. I highly recommend doing a guided tour. It turns into a maze back there and I can see how you could easily get lost.

Matt, our guide, was super knowledgeable about the area and shared a lot about the lake and the ecosystem. You can also see osprey, eagles, and a variety of other birds. When the weather is warm you may see an alligator or 2 too!

Sea Turtle Center

The Forgotten Coast Sea Turtle Center is new to the area and it is exciting to visit and hear what they are planning to do. There are a lot of sea turtles in the bay and the gulf side is a big nesting area for them from May through October.

Right now you can stop in and learn more about the sea turtles in the area and how we can all protect them. Plus they share a variety of volunteer activities that you may be interested in participating in.

St Joseph Bay Golf Club

If golf is your thing you will want to head over the St Joseph Bay Golf Club . The course was nice and also challenging. We were easily able to get a tee time on a Sunday at 11am and had a great time on the course.

Cape San Blas Lighthouse

We checked out the lighthouse from afar, but did not go up it. It is definitely a Port St. Joe landmark and it was fun to point it out when we were out on a boat on the bay too!

General Store at Waters Edge RV

If you are looking to pick up a few supplies for the day you will want to check out the General Store at Water’s Edge RV Park ! They have a good beer and wine selection along with supplies you will need for fishing or playing at the beach.

When you are here you will want to explore all of the beaches. Both on the bay side and on the Gulf of Mexico side. You will find waves crashing and shells to search through. Here is a breakdown of the beaches in the area:

St Joseph Peninsula State Park

You know we always love a State Park and this one did not disappoint! St Joseph Peninsula State Park Port St Joe offers a hiking trail and also 2 beaches. One on the Bay side and one on the Gulf Of Mexico side.

Located on Stone Memorial st they have restrooms and a shop by the beaches. A great place to come to spend the day.

Windmark Beach

Located just east of Port St. Joe, Windmark Beach has a nice paved walkway to get to the beach and was very calm. It has the beautiful white sand and would be perfect to hang at the beach for the day and then grab dinner at one of the restaurants in the area.

St. Joe Beach

Another option is St Joe Beach which is located further east. It is across the street from a playground and the Gulf County Veterans Memorial Park. The shore of St. Joe Beach is beautiful and has that nice soft sand.

Salinas Park Beach

This is a public parking spot where you can choose to park on the Bay side or the Gulf side. We definitely prefer the Gulf side when we are beaching it!

The beach is huge and filled with so many amazing shells. Better than any shelling I have done anywhere else!

From Salinas Park beach you can walk for miles along the beach and collect large shells. It is a great place to catch a sunset too. This is a great spot to stop and talk about how erosion and hurricanes can change the coastline.

You can also access the beach from further up the road. It is marked but on the left hand side of the road if you are driving on the cape towards St Joseph Bay State Park – there are a bunch of big rocks and a small opening where you can see the water and the beach. You can park on the side of the road here and walk through a bunch of tree trunks on the beach.

We didn’t get a chance to do this but check out Rockin M Ranch if you want to do horseback riding on the beach!

Where To Eat In Port St Joe

There are a variety of great Port St Joe restaurants . We highly recommend trying Oysters while you are here and any of the local caught fish.

Uptown Raw Bar and Grill

When in this area you have to try the oysters and Uptown Raw Bar and Grill is the place to do it. They offer oysters raw, baked, and grilled along with shrimp and other seafood options.

It is located on the main street in downtown Port St. Joe. We tried the oysters and they were delicious! We recommend getting them baked.

Krazyfish Grille

A popular spot off of highway 98 on Reid Avenue. Krazyfish Grille offers indoor and outdoor seating. They have a variety of different seafood options – Craig really liked the fresh caught Snapper he got.

They also have a regular kids menu – for those that don’t like seafood. And a good selection of burgers and salads.

Peter’s Pizzeria

If you are looking to feed the whole family with a couple pizzas Peter’s Pizzeria is the place for you. The pizza’s and slices are huge – which got a passing grade from our kids!

On top of being a huge pizza the pizza was also yummy and they have a variety of unique flavors.

Sand Dollar Cafe

If you are looking for a southern comfort food style breakfast, then Sand Dollar Cafe is the place for you! When you come in they have servers right there and you can tell them what you want and they get a plate together for you so can start eating right away.

They also offer a to go option. The breakfast was great and our kids’ plates were clean when they were done!

They also have a lunch menu and both indoor and outdoor seating.

Shaggy Bay Super Club

The Shaggy Bay Super Club is located at the St. Joe Bay Golf Club mentioned above. You can sit inside or outside – overlooking the golf course. They have a good selection of sandwiches and salads and a full bar.

We also heard they have a very good Sunday morning brunch option.

Piggly Wiggly

When in Port Saint Joe you will most likely want to do a picnic on the beach at some point. Piggly Wiggly is the perfect place to pick up all your supplies.

They also have a delicious Sushi shop inside so you can grab a prepackaged order or place a custom order for sushi.

Water’s Edge General Store

If you are heading out towards Indian Pass Water’s Edge General Store should be a stop you make. You can pick up some snacks, beer, wine, and also fishing and beach gear.

The general store is also part of the Water’s Edge RV Park. It is always nice to have a store like this at your RV park!

Where To Stay In Port St Joe

Presnell’s rv park.

If you are coming in Port St Joe Fl in an RV, then Presnell’s RV Park is an awesome place to stay! We got a spot right on the bay and the sunsets we saw at night right from our RV windows was amazing.

They also have a heated swimming pool and the location is great since you are just 5 minutes from downtown Port St. Joe and about 5 minutes to Cape San Blas for the Gulf Beach.

Our spot was also a good size and nice and level and our hookups were in good condition!

Port St. Joe, Florida Things To Do, Lodging, Dining, & Real Estate At End Of Article

Port St. Joe is on Florida's "Forgotten Coast" at the intersection of US-98 and State Road 71 about 23 miles west of  Apalachicola  in Gulf County. Its population is about 3,811.

The Forgotten Coast is the stretch along the Gulf Coast in the Florida panhandle along US-98 between Mexico Beach and Shell Point and St. Marks.

PORT ST. JOE, FLORIDA HISTORY

The town of St. Joseph was founded in 1835. As a deepwater seaport, shipping through the bay was abundant, followed by the railroad coming in, and the small town became a bustling port.

It quickly grew into the largest city in the state of Florida at the time, with 12,000 residents by 1837.

In 1838 delegates arrived to draw up the first State Constitution here, in preparation for Florida becoming the 27th state in 1845.

The town's prosperity did not last however. There was a large fire in 1841, and it was one of the early victims of several coastal yellow fever epidemics, causing many of those who survived to leave.

By 1842 residents were numbered to be only 400-500.

This was followed by destructive hurricanes in 1843 and 1851. The storms destroyed railroad equipment on top of a decline in cotton prices, and the railroad went bankrupt. By this point the town was largely abandoned.

A new town was founded nearby when the railroad returned to the area in 1909. Town founders decided on the more casual name of "Port St. Joe" and that's what it's been named ever since.

The Town of Port St. Joe is on the shore of St. Joseph Bay, an arm of the Gulf of Mexico that is about 15 miles long in the north-south direction and 6 miles wide.

For most of the twentieth century, Port St. Joe was known to tourists and Floridians as a smelly paper mill town.  

The St. Joe Company opened a large paper mill in 1938 and the town prospered with good jobs in the mill and surrounding forests.

Tourists, however, usually sped through the town to get away from the stinky paper mill smell. 

Locals, however, said it smelled like "bread and butter" to them.

The mill closed in 1999 and along with it went most of the area's good paying jobs.  Unemployment soared to 20%.  The town lost half its population. 

The buildings on the mill site have since been demolished, leaving a large open site on St. Joseph Bay that will no doubt be developed.

That's the bad news, especially if you worked at the paper mill.

The good news is that tourists rediscovered Port St. Joe and started coming to stay again on their weekends and vacations, finding it a great place to build vacation homes and permanent residences.

The Port St. Joe area became known as the lost city, and visitors were (and still are) drawn to its natural beauty, finding a restful respite from the rush of life in busier areas.

The Forgotten Coast is a name created by local chambers of commerce after the paper mill closed to describe this area of the Gulf coast and generate some enthusiasm for tourism.

Many of the permanent residents of this coast say it's one of the best things about it, and want to remain forgotten, and send me emails asking me to stop writing about their quiet area of the state.

St. Joseph Peninsula is the barrier island that protects the waters of the bay.  

Most of the peninsula is taken up by the nine mile long St. Joseph Peninsula State Park with some of the finest beaches in the world.

This brings visitors from around the world coming to have a great time in the water, from fishing and boating to snorkeling and shelling.

The peninsula also has the largest number of Loggerhead Sea Turtles in northwest Florida, and they nest from May to October.

Several years ago Dr. Beach pronounced it the best beach in the United States.

The bay has a narrow opening to the Gulf on its north end and is connected to the mainland on the south through Cape San Blas.

The bay is known for its abundant scallop population and many people flock to the area for scallop season between July 1 and September 24.

These physical advantages made Port St. Joe an important early port in this part of the state, and the port still has an active operation.  

Even when the Gulf of Mexico is rough and stormy, the bay stays nice and calm and perfect for boating and fishing.

A popular spot to visit in town is the Cape San Blas Lighthouse that was relocated some years ago from the cape into Port St. Joe.

Modern Port St. Joe has nice marinas, motels and inns, many restaurants and shops, and is emerging as a laid back tourist destination.

Local governments have so far done a good job of preventing the proliferation of high rise hotel and condos that soar above the not so forgotten coast to the west.

Krazyfish uses locally sourced fresh food and their most popular items are made daily.  For a restaurant with such an extensive seafood menu, the owner, Mark Haddock, has an especially appropriate name.

The trail begins at Frank Pate Park, at the intersection of US-Highway 98 and US-Highway 71. This four mile paved pathway winds through the heart of Port St. Joe, offering a safe and scenic route for walkers, cyclists, and joggers. Where Is Port St. Joe Located in Florida

Port St. Joe is a hidden gem of Florida’s Forgotten Coast, a stretch of coastline that has retained its authentic charm and tranquil atmosphere.

Located on the Gulf of Mexico shores, it offers a serene escape from the well-known Florida destinations.

History of Port St. Joe

Established in the 1830s as a strategic port, Port St. Joe’s history is steeped in maritime trade and the wood industry. It thrived as a shipping hub and sawmill center during the 19th century. Natural disasters challenged its growth, but its resilience led to the establishing of the St. Joseph Peninsula State Park, preserving its past.

In October 2018, Port St. Joe was heavily affected by Hurricane Michael, a powerful Category 5 hurricane.

The storm caused widespread destruction, severely damaging homes, infrastructure, and natural surroundings. Like many other areas, Port St. Joe faced a challenging recovery process after the hurricane.

Still, the community’s resilience has been pivotal in rebuilding efforts. Today, the town continues restoring its beauty and charm, welcoming visitors to its coastal attractions.

What To Do In Port St. Joe

Port St. Joe’s downtown is a historical treasure trove with well-preserved architecture, unique shops, galleries, and diverse dining options. Throughout the year, lively festivals and events celebrate local culture, making it a dynamic hub where the past meets modern community spirit.

The Cape San Blas Lighthouse

The Cape San Blas Lighthouse, located in Port St. Joe, is a historic Gulf Coast landmark. Initially constructed in the late 1800s, the lighthouse has witnessed the changing tides of time. Its role in safeguarding ships along the coastline is a testament to its importance during the heyday of maritime trade. You can learn more about its history here .

Though no longer active, it offers panoramic ocean views and a glimpse into maritime history. Perched on Cape San Blas, it’s a cherished site for history buffs and nature lovers alike.

The lighthouse is nestled on the picturesque Cape San Blas peninsula within Port St. Joe and invites exploration and reflection. Visitors can climb its steps to enjoy sweeping vistas of the Gulf of Mexico and the surrounding natural beauty.

The lighthouse and its surrounding area that have been preserved allow visitors to step back in time and connect with the region’s coastal heritage.

By the way, Charles Farley wrote the book  “Secrets of San Blas.”   The novel is based on the actual murder at Cape San Blas Lighthouse in the spring of 1938.

This Florida mystery series has two more books:  “Secrets of St. Vincent”  and  “Secrets of St. Joe.”   As you probably understand from the name of the third book, it is about Port St. Joe, the town I am writing about in this post.

How to Get There: We usually drive to Port St. Joe. If you choose an airplane, the Northwest Florida Beaches International Airport (ECP) is an hour’s drive away. Renting a car is convenient for exploring the area and getting to Port St. Joe.

Weather Insights: Port St. Joe has a mild and comfortable climate, making it an attractive destination all year. Summers are warm with high levels of humidity. Average temperatures in summertime range from the mid-70s to mid-90s Fahrenheit (24-35°C). Winters in Port St. Joe are mild, with temperatures typically ranging from the 40s to 60s Fahrenheit (4-20°C). Considering humidity, temperatures feel nice most of the year, excluding some hot weeks in the summer, with a fair chance of precipitation about half of the year. The area is somewhat temperate — in the 43rd percentile for pleasant weather — compared to tourist destinations worldwide. Weeks with ideal weather are listed above . If you’re looking for the very warmest time to visit Port St Joe, the hottest months are August, July, and then June. See average monthly temperatures below. Winter (December through February)

Weather is too cold this time of year in Port St Joe to be enjoyable for warm weather travelers. The average high during this season is between 69.4°F (20.8°C) and 63.3°F (17.4°C). The Ultimate List Of The Most beautiful Port St. Joe Florida Beaches

UPDATED August 2023. Port St. Joe is on a part of the Florida Gulf of Mexico that is so pretty. Nearby St. George Island, Carrabelle and Apalachicola makes this a great place on the Florida Gulf to vacation.

This little town has old world Florida vibes and is also known as the small town with a big heart. In its earlier history, Port St. Joe was a bustling port.

Now it is a favorite place for those that are looking for a break from the day to day craziness in their lives. A welcome place to decompress and relax with its beautiful postcard views.

Where is Port St. Joe?

Port St. Joe is located on the Gulf of Mexico at the intersection of U.S. Highway 98 and State Road 71. It is in Gulf County.

How to get to Port St. Joe?

Roughly 48 miles from Panama City Beach or about 70 miles from Tallahassee. Both are easy airports to fly in and out of.

Very doable and enjoyable rides from either airport. One thing to keep in mind though, is that PCB is in Central Time Zone while Port St. Joe is Eastern Time Zone.

What is Port St. Joe known for?

Fishing! Port St. Joe is a big fishing town offering many fishing charters that provide access to some of the best offshore fishing in the Gulf. Fish for speckled trout, redfish and tarpon.

Port St. Joe is called a small beach town with a big heart. And that has.

Is the water clear at Port St. Joe?

I have been at this beach several times. The water was not clear. It was more brown.

This is usually a result of a storm or other event that churned it up. My friends have been many times and say it has been clear.

You can swim when you cannot swim on the other side when the Gulf waves are high as this area is a bit inland.

You can also snorkel here when the water is clear. You may see manatees, rays, starfish, scallops and more. Great place to introduce kids to snorkeling.

Does Port St. Joe Florida Have Nice Beaches

Let’s talk about the beaches. The beaches in Port St. Joe are pretty, but they are not like the Panhandle Beaches.

What I can tell you are the sunsets are spectacular. You will not want to miss these.

You may have realized by now that I am partial to the beaches on the Gulf side of Florida. The white sand beaches. Crystal clear water. And some of the nicest people you will ever meet live in this area.

The beach is an important part of any vacation experience as far as I’m concerned. Whether you’re looking for a quiet place to relax or a lively spot to enjoy fun activities, there are many Port St. Joe Florida Beaches to choose from. Below are my favorites:

St. Joe Beach

St. Joe Beach is beautiful, clean and not crowded. You can easily walk for miles on these beaches.

This beach is located between Port St. Joe and Mexico Beach on the Florida Panhandle.

St. Joe Beach is located at 6536 W. Hwy 98 Saint Joe Beach, FL 32456. This beach is one of the pet-friendly beaches in the area.

Windmark Beach

Windmark Beach, is actually on an unnamed road off U.S. 98. Make the time to find it.

Nice beach to relax on and enjoy watching the waves. Quiet for those looking to get away from the crowds.

Soft sand beaches to walk on or simply soak up the sun. Calm water and waves makes it friendly for little ones.

This is not a pet-friendly beach. Be sure to keep your eyes open as you gaze out at the water. You may see dolphins, sea turtles and possibly a whale.

St. Joseph Bay

Beautiful St. Joseph Bay is located in Gulf County between Apalachicola and Panama City. Port St. Joe is also located on St. Joe Bay.

St. Joseph Bay is bounded on the east by the mainland, on the south by Cape San Blas, and on the west by the St. Joseph Peninsula.

Port Saint Joe Bay Park is my favorite of the Port St. Joe Florida Beaches.

It offers a beautiful beach you can’t wait to dig your toes into. It is also pet friendly, so you can bring your fur best friend.

This beach is located at Flat Water St W, Port St Joe, FL 32456 Watch where you are walking or wear water shoes. The rocks can be quite tough on your feet.

Free parking, easy beach access and restrooms, and calm waters because it is on the Bay makes this the perfect beach for a family vacay.

T.H. Stone Memorial St. Joseph Peninsula State Park

This state park probably has my favorite of all the beaches in this area. Located at 8899 Cape San Blas Rd, Port St Joe, FL 32456, you will find it right off US 98.

Also, one of my favorite beaches for beach camping. And there is so much to do in this beautiful park.

There are actually two sides for two different beaches. You have the Gulf side that the surf can be rough depending on the weather. Then you have the bay side which is calm and peaceful.

Enjoy hiking in the woods as you search for wildlife like deer, the least terns, snowy plovers, turtles, snakes and more. Then cool off in the shallow bay water before you leave for the day.

Love to kayak or canoe? There is a boat ramp to launch, so you can explore the emerald waters on both sides of the park. Surf fishing? You can do it here too.

Definitely one of the top state parks in Florida and also in the United States. Note: Hurricane Michael did do some damage to the campgrounds in this park, but they are or will be shortly reopened. Definitely one of the best beaches in Florida .

Port St. Joe Florida Beaches Things To Do

There are so many fun things to do in this area. Here are my top picks:

Apalachicola River and downtown Apalachicola is a fun stop for shopping and exploring. This river is roughly 160 miles long and flows into the Gulf. Enjoy kayaking, boating, fishing and more on this national treasure.

Forgotten Coast Sea Turtle Center . Be sure to include this stop on your list of things to do.

Every morning from May 1st through October 31st, the volunteers of the St. Joseph Peninsula Turtle Patrol survey approximately six miles of beach on the St. Joseph Peninsula. This allows them to assist in the monitoring of sea turtle nesting and hatching activity.

St. Vincent National Wildlife Refuge is a place you want to go if you love nature as much as I do. St. Vincent Island, a 12,300 acre undeveloped Gulf of Mexico barrier island accessible only by boat, is the most visited Refuge unit.

Here you will find undeveloped beaches, beautiful sand dunes, hiking, biking, and more. Surf fishing is also permissible at the refuge.

Shopping And Dining

There are several restaurants and stores nearby for easy dining and shopping. I personally love to hit Apalachicola and the many stores and restaurants that line the streets.

Tips to make your Port St. Joe Florida vacation a memorable one

First stop at the Gulf County Welcome Center. It’s a big green building on stilts. There you will find insider info on the best restaurants, shopping, and events.

Check out the whole welcome center because there are things you won’t want to miss like a sample of Tupelo honey.

Walk Down Reid Avenue & Explore Downtown Port St. Joe. This small beach community is perfect for fishing, snorkeling and boating.

Then enjoy southern hospitality at wonderful mom-and-pops style restaurants, unique shops, and a variety of beautiful parks! Be sure to take time to climb the historic Cape San Blas Lighthouse (131 steps).

If you have time, be sure to venture over to St. George Island where you will find more of the same old beach town vibes.

The state park is located at the end of the island and is a must-visit for its beautiful sand dunes and white sandy beaches.
