A sight is an aiming device used to assist in visually aligning a weapon with the intended target. There are a number of sighting systems available for firearms including iron sights, optics and lasers.

Traditional iron sights come equipped on just about every firearm, even if it has other types of sights. Iron sights work by providing the shooter with horizontal and vertical reference points. The sights align the target with the firearm, helping the shooter make a more accurate shot.

Slide-mounted optics, also known as red dot sights (RDS), can be mounted on top of the pistol slide using a mounting plate or a slide cut. The mounting plate is installed in place of the rear sight, and the optic directly mounted to the plate. Alternatively, cuts can be machined into the slide itself, and and the optics mount directly to the slide often in front of the rear iron sights.

The Safariland RDS holster line is specifically designed for slide mounted optics on handguns. Almost all of the RDS holsters accommodate a light and optic. There are also some holster lines like the GLS and the 5197 holsters ( 5196 / 5197 / 5198 / 5199 ) which are open at the top end and make it possible to add any type of RDS optic.

Lasers are a part of the military, law enforcement and civilian markets, and they generally work within the light fit on the bottom of the handgun frame (or accessory rail). Lasers can be an effective aiming device and can cut down time-to-target. They can also, however, interfere with retention systems and holster fit. Be sure to check for compatibility with make and model designations.

A note on SupPressor height sights

Optic-ready guns come from the manufacturer with suppressor height sights.  This style of iron sights is added for the option to co-witness with a slide-mounted optic.  Suppressor height sights are also prevalent in firearms with threaded barrels in order to have iron sights above the suppressor or compensator for proper sight alignment.

Safariland RDS Optic holsters are set up to work with suppressor height sights. Typically, the sight track runs from .50″ to .575″ in the 6000 Series RDS Optic holsters. The 7TS RDS models have a clearance of .60″ or 9/16″.  For the best holster fit, you want to be under that measurement. Holsters may vary depending on the firearm/optic combination, but this is a good rule of thumb when considering the sight height for sizing.

In non-RDS, duty and tactical holsters, sight height of .375″ or 3/8″ is good, but a sight height of .4375″ or 7/16″ is considered borderline.  A borderline height may contact the holster body causing drag when trying to unholster the firearm.

For the 5198 holster, there is 3/16″ clearance, as these models will work with slide-mounted optics and are often a choice of competitive shooters. The model 557 holster has 1/4″ clearance and works with optic-mounted firearms.

Hearing the word safari immediately creates an image of a white truck, surrounded by wild animals, a magnificent sunset, and never-ending land. Going on a safari is an experience unlike any other. This vacation isn’t about fancy hotels and five-star restaurants, instead, it is a journey through nature. 

The thrill you feel on a safari is indescribable and so it’s only fitting that you pack a wardrobe that suits the adventure of the journey. When selecting clothing pieces for a safari it is important that you keep durability as your primary concern. 

Safaris in Africa are no place for peep-toe shoes and mini skirts. You don’t want to show up overdressed and so it’s essential that you do your research before packing for your trip. You will be surrounded by wildlife and it’s only appropriate you choose clothing pieces that work in harmony with mother nature. 

What To Expect In This Article?

Key Clothing Pieces for a Safari 

Once you have worked out all your details regarding your trip, the next most important step is creating a wardrobe fit for the wild. Down below are wardrobe staples that you absolutely need if you plan on going on a safari any time soon.

Swimsuits 

Packing a swimsuit depends on where you plan to go on a safari. If it is somewhere with nice beaches, you should pack one or two swimsuits to get to experience the beach life as well. 

Jackets 

A safari jacket is the best style of jacket you can take with you on a safari. It was literally created for safaris and so is crafted keeping the harshness of a safari in mind. You should also invest in a corduroy jacket as the weather on safaris tends to drastically change during the night. 

You need two styles of shoes. A pair of cute sandals that you can wear for pictures and jeep rides. The other is a pair of safari boots to explore around in. 

Is it even a safari if you don’t wear a hat?  A hat will not only protect you from the heat but it will also pull your whole look together. Plus, who doesn’t like a good hat? 

5 Different outfits for 5 Days on a Safari 

It’s not enough to just know about the clothing pieces you need. You also need to know how to style them. Throwing on a bunch of pieces will get you dressed but it won’t make an outfit. We have put together a few different looks in accordance with the most popular fashion trends of 2024 .

Safari Chic

Start off your safari in style and opt for a white linen shirt. Pair it with high-waisted khaki shorts, a chic safari hat, and a pair of sandals. Tie an earthy-tone scarf around your neck to give the overall look a cute twist. 

Alternatively, pair a white cotton shirt with khaki pants. Add on knee-high brown boots to create a western-themed outfit . This look is both easy to pull off and functional. 

Safaris tend to get colder during the night. You can add on a brown leather jacket to this look to shield yourself from the cold. 

Girl On The Run 

Something about rompers just makes them an excellent choice for safaris. When picking rompers, it’s best to gravitate towards earthy tones like brown, beige, and green. These colors don’t absorb as much heat and look extremely chic. 

When styling a romper, you have to invest in some eye-catching accessories. Try pairing a mute green romper with a brown belt and a fedora hat. Finish off the look with strappy sandals. This look is perfect for the days you plan on lounging or cruising. 

Jungle Queen 

Safaris can get brutal. The heat, humidity, and bizarre weather conditions can really get to you. On days like this, you want to stay covered up but in breathable clothing pieces. Jumpsuits are a great option since they cover you from head to toe and are available in a bunch of different colors. 

To keep with the safari theme, style a brown jumpsuit with beige sandals. Add on a floppy hat and you are ready for the day.

One thing most people overlook on safaris is the drop in temperature during the night. There are a few different ways in which you can take your jumpsuit from day to night. You can either wear a white linen shirt over the jumpsuit or you can cover up with a safari jacket. Either of these options will keep you warm yet stylish. 

Safari Elegance 

Who says you can’t wear dresses to a safari?  When we say dresses, we don’t mean body-con or slip-dresses. Dresses appropriate for a safari include flowy maxi dresses and safari dresses. There are a bunch of different ways you can wear them. 

A day spent feeding giraffes is a great opportunity to wear a dress and click some memorable photographs. Pick a lightweight maxi dress, with a floral or animal print. Add on a hat and some basic sandals. 

If you plan to spend the day out in the wild, a safari dress will be better fitting. Safari dresses have a more structured silhouette. They aren’t flowy yet they have enough movement to identify as a dress. They come in standard safari colors and look stunning when paired with brown belts. Complete the look with either shoes, sandals, or safari boots. 

Classy and Sophisticated 

Pants are the best option for bottoms when it comes to a safari. They are durable, flexible, stylish, and functional. They keep you covered and protect you from the sun and bugs. A beige safari shirt, tucked into green corduroy pants creates an archaeologist sort of look. Complete the look with safari boots and a wide-brim hat. 

On the days that corduroy becomes unbearable, pick something more loose-fitting like cargo pants . Cargo pants look great on safaris, not to mention how handy all the pockets are. A safari shirt paired with cargo pants and brown safari boots creates a safari-friendly look.   

Evenings, on a safari, are a time to relax and change out of your dusty day wear. A long-sleeved shirt, pants, and boots create the perfect look for an evening out. You can also add on a jacket to keep warm. Try to wear light-colored clothes to avoid mosquitos. 

The best options for a safari-themed party are safari shirts, dresses, suits, rompers, and jumpsuits. Pick clothing pieces that revolve around an earthy color palette. Accessories are very important. Add on hats, boots, and belts to nail the safari theme. 

First and foremost, learn about the weather conditions and the itinerary of the safari. Your safari duffel bag should include linen shirts, safari dresses, pants, shirts, boots, jumpsuits, and hats. One of each should get you through a safari in style.

3 Safariland Light-Bearing Holsters for EDC Pistols

Today more shooters mount weapon lights on their concealed carry and duty pistols than ever before, and that’s a good thing, as criminals often use low-light conditions to stack the odds in their favor during an attack. Weapon lights allow you to get a clear view of your target while potentially blinding an assailant.

The only problem is there are few light-bearing holsters, and almost none of them are designed for concealed carry. Safariland ( safariland.com ) offers the most robust lineup of light-bearing holsters available today—including duty rigs and also more compact designs suitable for concealed carry.

For this column I tested three different Safariland outside-the-waistband, light-bearing holsters: the Solis (level I retention) , the 6287 (level II retention) and the 6360RDS (level III retention) . The goal of the exercise was to test not only the comfort and functionality of the holster but also to examine the effectiveness of each retention system and to compare draw speeds.

The Solis is Safariland’s newest holster, and it blends the benefits of an open-top holster with the security of level I retention. The Automatic Locking System or ALS system allows for a rapid release of the pistol with just the press of a tab. The design is intuitive because the thumb naturally contacts the release while drawing the gun.

So it’s not surprising that the Solis has the fastest firing time of the test. The average time required to draw and fire a single round on target from an open-top, non-retention holster I used as a control was 1.2 seconds. The Solis registered an average of 1.3 seconds, so it’s plenty fast.

It is also by far the lightest and smallest holster. Weighing just 5.4 ounces, the Solis is light enough for daily carry. The holster shell is just 1.5 inches wide and 5.25 inches long, which means that it could be worn concealed under a light jacket or heavy shirt. The open muzzle allows debris and water to flow out of the holster, and this holster accepted a reflex sight without issue.

The G43x test pistol wore suppressor-height sights from XS, and they barely fit in the sight channel. Inserting the pistol/laser combo sometimes required some maneuvering, but overall the holster performed very well. The SafariSeven nylon construction is non-marring and reduces friction for a smooth, easy draw stroke. The holster body itself is durable and comes with robust hardware, making this a great holster option for duty or even concealed carry.

The 6287 comes with Safariland’s SLS locking hood system and meets Safariland’s level II retention standards. To release the firearm, press down on the tab on the side of the hood and rotate the hood forward. The process can be completed in a single motion, so retrieving the firearm is quick. On average I could draw and fire the pistol in 1.5 seconds, but on two of the five test runs I was actually as fast or faster than the ALS system.

Part of the reason is that months prior to the holster evaluation I completed Gunsite’s carbine course, which requires participants to carry a sidearm—a Shadow Systems DR920 9mm pistol with a Streamlight TLR-2 light in the 6287. I can also assure you that the mechanical operation of the holster is not impacted by dust or contact. I crawled through the desert, bumped into barriers and generally exposed the holster to lots of abuse without issue.

The 6287 comes with a soft suede interior lining to protect the firearm and a SafariLaminate exterior. Unlike the SafariSeven nylon blend used for Solis holsters, SafariLaminate is a thermoplastic shell that is thermoformed around the gun for a close, tight fit.

This rugged material is well-suited for duty rigs and can last for years of hard use. The shell maintains its shape even when it is exposed to high heat, and it is also fairly light. The 6287 tested weighs 11.3 ounces, which is more than most dedicated carry holsters but significantly less than competing duty holsters with similar retention levels. I prefer the look of SafariLaminate to SafariSeven, but I believe both will stand up to a lifetime of use.

The 6287 is great for anyone who wants the added security of a level II holster but wants a light-bearing carry rig that allows you to quickly access the firearm. Although most law enforcement agencies use level III holsters, the 6287 still secures the firearm effectively. On the downside, the model tested does not accept pistols with optics.

The 6360RDS is a dedicated duty holster that uses both the ALS and SLS retention systems and incorporates Safariland’s RDS optics hood. It’s not designed for recreational or competitive shooters but rather law enforcement and military professionals for whom the threat of hand-to-hand combat demands a holster that keeps the gun secured while still providing rapid access to the gun.

After practicing with the system I became fairly fast, but fumbling with the hood release cost me time, and it was the only holster that required more than two seconds to draw and shoot. I don’t blame that on the holster but the shooter, and if I had the same time and experience with the 6360RDS that I had with the 6287, I believe I could have produced equally fast splits with both holsters.

The 6360RDS provides lots of security measures to prevent an assailant from drawing the firearm. And while there’s a lot happening during the draw—the hand must evade the top shield, rotate the pistol and RDS optics hoods forward, and then release the ALS lever to draw—it’s a rather intuitive design.

The shooter’s hand sweeps from the rear of the gun to avoid the shield, and then the SLS hood tab must be pressed down and the dual hoods rotated forward. With practice this can be done in one smooth motion. The ALS lever is in a natural position to be released by the shooting hand thumb as it contacts the holster.

The 6360 RDS’s exterior is made from thermoformed SafariLaminate shell, available in a variety of colors, and the interior is lined with suede for a smooth draw and no damage to the gun. The RDS hood is a must-have feature on a duty holster with a red dot mounted because precipitation can negatively impact the sight picture. The hood’s design eliminates that risk.

I also like how difficult it is to remove the gun from the holster unless you are wearing it and are familiar with the system. Retention holsters save the lives of officers, and if I were on the streets chasing criminals each day, I would want a duty holster with these features.

Not surprisingly, the 6360RDS is the heaviest holster on the list at 13.5 ounces, but that’s only about two ounces more than the level II 6287.

Whether you’re carrying on duty or for personal defense, having a light on your weapon can change the outcome of a violent encounter. No holster maker offers so many options in light-bearing holsters, and no other company provides holsters for such a wide range of carry applications. Safariland does light-bearing holsters better than anyone, and its user-friendly rigs are built to last.

• The Ingram family, known for their massive Porsche collection, showcased a selection of their cars at the Met Gala in New York City.
• Highlights of the convoy included a Porsche 918 Spyder and a Viola Purple 911 Dakar.
• The Ingram collection includes more than 80 of the finest Porsches ever built.

The Met Gala recently took place in New York City and while this isn’t an event car enthusiasts circle on their calendar, a selection of special Porsches hit the city’s streets on Monday afternoon, celebrating the Macan’s role as the official electric vehicle of the event.

It’s only been a few months since the 2024 Porsche Macan EV was unveiled and during the Met Gala, select guests rode inside it to and from the event. Some of the most prized cars from the well-known Ingram Family collection joined the Macan at the event, painted in a mixture of purple and black.

Key highlights of the small parade included the Ingram Family’s purple Porsche 918 Spyder, a Viola Purple Metallic 2024 911 Dakar, a 911 GT3 RS, a 911 Speedster, and a Porsche 718 Cayman GT4 RS, also painted in purple and sitting on gold wheels. A classic Porsche 911 Safari from 1978 painted purple also joined the convoy, as did a dark purple Taycan and a black 918 Spyder .

The late Bob Ingram and his wife Jeanie are behind the famed Ingram Family collection of Porsches. The couple lived in North Carolina and spent years assembling a collection of over 80 iconic Porsche models. Unlike so many other collectors, the Ingrams frequently drive their cars. Almost all of them have been road registered, including a 906 Carrera 6 racing car from the 1960s.

Bob Ingram made his money as a pharmaceutical sales representative and worked his way up the industry, eventually becoming the chief executive of Glaxo Wellcome, a pharmaceutical giant that merged with SmithKline Beecham in 2000, creating GlaxoSmithKline. Unfortunately, Bob Ingram passed away in March last year.

Russia's Nuclear Deterrent Command Center Imperiled by Winter Freeze—Report

A Russian nuclear deterrent command center in Moscow has been imperiled by power outages that have impacted more than one-quarter of the region's cities amid freezing temperatures, a Russian Telegram channel has reported.

The VChK-OGPU outlet, which purports to have inside information from Russian security forces, reported that the 820th Main Center for Missile Attack Warnings—part of the Russian Space Forces, a branch of the country's Aerospace Forces—near Solnechnogorsk in Moscow is without power.

It serves as the space forces early warning network against potential ballistic missile attacks.

The development comes as Russians are reported to be suffering from power outages in their homes in the Moscow region caused by technical issues at plants amid subzero temperatures.

On January 4, a heating main burst at the Klimovsk Specialized Ammunition Plant in the town of Podolsk, which is about 30 miles south of central Moscow. Since then, tens of thousands of Russians are reported to have no heating in their homes.

Affected areas include the cities of Khimki, Balashikha, Lobnya, Lyubertsy, Podolsk, Chekhov and Naro-Fominsk, a map published by a Russian Telegram channel and shared on other social media sites shows.

Other Russian media outlets reported that in Moscow, residents of Balashikha, Elektrostal, Solnechnogorsk, Dmitrov, Domodedovo, Troitsk, Taldom, Orekhovo-Zuyevo, Krasnogorsk, Pushkino, Ramenskoye, Voskresensk, Losino-Petrovsky and Selyatino are also without power.

The Telegram channel said that at the 820th Main Center for Missile Attack Warnings, "the crew...is on duty around the clock."

"It is here that the decision on a retaliatory nuclear strike is executed," the channel said.

Newsweek could not independently verify the report and has reached out to the Russian Defense Ministry by email for comment.

Power outages have also been reported in Russia's second-largest city, St. Petersburg, in the country's western Voronezh region, in the southwest city of Volgograd, and in Rostov, which borders Ukraine, a country that Russia has been at war with since February 24, 2022.

On Sunday, two shopping malls in St. Petersburg were forced to close because of problems with light and heating, reported local news outlet 78.ru. Hundreds of other homes in the city have had no electricity, water or heating for days amid temperatures of -25 C (-13 F).

Russian authorities have also been forced to compensate passengers of a train that ran from Samara to St. Petersburg (a 20-hour journey) without heating during -30 C (-22 F) temperatures. Videos circulating on social media showed carriage windows frozen over. A passenger also said the toilet didn't work during the trip because of frozen pipes.
