  • Trivia First appearance of the Vulcan phrases "Peace and long life" and "Live long and prosper." Also the first ever Star Trek episode to feature any Vulcan characters other than Spock.
  • Goofs After T'Pring chooses Kirk to be her champion, Kirk and McCoy are speaking with T'Pau. If you look in the background, you will see Leonard Nimoy standing against the wall with his hands behind his back, apparently unaware that he is on camera. Spock is supposed to be off in the corner, deep in the blood fever.

Spock : [after T'Pring has explained her actions] Logical. Flawlessly logical.

T'Pring : I am honored.

Spock : Stonn, she is yours. After a time, you may find that having is not so pleasing a thing after all as wanting. It is not logical, but it is often true.

Star Trek - Kirk & Spock Fight to the Death

Spock must battle Kirk in a fight to the death

Koon-ut-kal-if-fee

Kirk and Spock engaged in kal-if-fee using a lirpa and an ahn-woon

The kal-if-fee (which literally translated as "challenge") was a Vulcan "passion fight" (traditionally to the death, but not necessarily) in which two Vulcan males fought for the right to mate with a certain female.

During the Vulcan mating ritual known as koon-ut-kal-if-fee , a female could claim kal-if-fee if she did not want the male arranged for her at childhood. At which point, the male arranged for her must fight the female's selected champion . If an outworlder was chosen as champion, they had the option to decline, in which case another champion would be selected. The lirpa and the ahn-woon were traditional Vulcan weapons used in the kal-if-fee . ( TOS : " Amok Time ")

In 2154 , Enterprise NX-01 First Officer T'Pol threatened to declare the kal-if-fee when her betrothed , Koss , informed her that he intended to go through with their prearranged marriage . Koss responded by suggesting that T'Pol's "Human friend" Trip Tucker might make a suitable challenger. T'Pol consequently married Koss without calling for the kal-if-fee . ( ENT : " Home ")

In 2267 , the Vulcan T'Pring , betrothed to Commander Spock of the USS Enterprise , claimed the kal-if-fee and chose Captain Kirk as her champion, all as part of a plot to evade her impending wedding to Spock and instead marry her preferred mate Stonn . ( TOS : " Amok Time ")

Females could also fight on their own behalf if they so chose. When Vorik underwent pon farr in the Delta Quadrant in 2373 and wanted to take fellow USS Voyager crewmember B'Elanna Torres as his mate, the half-Klingon female ultimately claimed the kal-if-fee and chose to champion herself. ( VOY : " Blood Fever ")

The USS Protostar holodeck included a holoprogram to fight in a kal-if-fee gladiatorial match . ( PRO : " Kobayashi ")

  12. Vulcans Running Amok: The Pon Farr

The only way a Vulcan can be released from pon farr is to mate, participate in koon-ut-kal-if-fee, or engage in intense meditation. Each time throughout the various incarnations of Star Trek the attempts at meditation have failed. It takes a keen mind, even more so than a typical Vulcan posseses—and their minds are pretty keen. It's hard stuff.

My question is, if a Vulcan has no emotion, how could one truly enjoy music? Music brings out such strong emotions in people. It would be like eating food, but having no taste buds (though food is required, music ...
