CONCERT REVIEW: STYX and REO SPEEDWAGON Deliver Rocking Comfort to the Lincoln Crowd

styx tour review 2022

BY PAM WHISENHUNT | Go Venue Magazine

It was a breath of old school 70s & 80s nostalgia this past Tuesday – May 10, 2022, at the Pinnacle Bank Arena in Lincoln, Nebraska, when Styx , REO Speedwagon and George Thorogood rolled through on the Live & Unzoomed Tour .  The show was originally set for the Pinewood Bowl Theatre, but due to weather and grounds condition, it was moved to the Pinnacle Bank Arena.

The show opened with a local Nebraskan duo, Tom & Wes . Tom Roth & Wes Stebbins played a simple, no frills acoustic set covering a variety of 70s favorites.

George Thorogood and the Destroyers kicked off the “Rock Party” playing a full set of Thorogood’s popular songs.  There was strong crowd participation throughout. People were singing along to favorites like “I Drink Alone” and “One Bourbon, One Scotch, One Beer”.  Thorogood had diehard fans on their feet dancing.  His efforts to connect to the audience with local references were well received.  He referred to Lincoln as a “best kept secret”.

The crowd, mostly seasoned rock and rollers, continued to stroll in.  Almost everyone was settled by the time REO Speedwagon began, and it’s a good thing; they didn’t want to miss what was next. REO Speedwagon started with “Music Man” “Take It On the Run” and “Keep Pushin”. I found myself in full-on 80s sentimentality with “I Can’t Fight This Feeling”.

REO Speedwagon ’s lead vocalist, Kevin Cronin announced he was 70 years old and acknowledged he doesn’t know it all, and he’s still learning. Cronin introduced his bandmates, but most notably keyboardist Neal Doughty . A founding member in 1967, Doughty has played on every REO Speedwagon album and performed at every show.  An impressive stat by any means.

REO Speedwagon left the stage. People started leaving for intermission when moments later, the band came back for an encore.  Something I’ve never experienced before (a non-headliner doing an encore).  They wrapped up their set with “Keep On Loving You” and “Roll With The Changes”.

Styx kicked off their set with a new song “The Fight of Our Lives” and a classic “Blue Collar Man (Long Nights)”. Styx played a mix of old songs including “Lady”, “Rocking the Paradise” and “Come Sail Away” mixed with music from their 2021 album Crash Of The Crown . Vocals from Lawrence Gowan (keyboardist) and Tommy Shaw (guitar) were controlled and melodic.

Gowan introduced the band members; Will Evankovich is the newest member on guitar. Ricky Phillips playing the five-string bass has been with the band for 20 years. Todd Sucherman , winner of nine Modern Drummer awards, has been drumming for Styx since 1995. Tommy Shaw on guitar with his “hair always in place”.  Lastly, when Gowan recognized James Young (guitar) and Chuck Panozzo (bass) as founding members, they received resounding applause and a standing ovation.

Styx was entertaining. They effectively engaged the audience and played with the same energy they always have.  They kept the light show classy and low-key; no pyrotechnics or strobe lights. Styx closed the show with the popular “Mr. Roboto” and “Renegade”.

Veterans of Styx & REO Speedwagon shows were happy with the performance, and newbies like myself were impressed. Fans were delighted with the top tier production, enthusiastic atmosphere and premier sound. It’s no surprise why these bands are considered rock legends.

Styx and REO Speedwagon continue their tour throughout the summer with special guest Loverboy .  You can find upcoming tour dates at styxworld.com .

Concert Review: A Fireball Performance from Styx at the MGM Music Hall

By Jason M. Rubin

I am happy to report that Styx 2023 is a powerhouse outfit, wielding the most exciting aspects of progressive rock with radio-friendly hooks, riffs, and rhythms that set it apart from many of its peers.

By this point in time, every classic rock band from the 1970s that is still around in one form or another has lost and replaced original members, usually to the detriment of the band’s sound and legitimacy. It’s not often that a band from that decade is more powerful and exciting in the 2020s than when it first came onto the scene. Styx is one such band.

They have lost two key founding members over the years: keyboardist, vocalist, and songwriter Dennis DeYoung, and drummer John Panozzo, whose bass-playing brother Chuck has been on and off over the years, and currently shares duties with Ricky Phillips, who joined in 2003. But each was replaced with better talent: Lawrence Gowan, a charismatic keys master who emerged during the neo-progressive rock movement of the mid-’80s with a series of solo albums that went unnoticed in America; and Todd Sucherman, one of the few rock drummers today with the technique, energy, and sheer talent to step into the shoes left empty by the death of Rush’s Neil Peart three years ago (Gavin Harrison is another). Sucherman went to Berklee for a year, then did sessions and was briefly part of Brian Wilson’s band (his wife, Taylor Mills, was a singer in the group at that time).

Gowan and Sucherman became members of Styx in 1999 and 1995, respectively. With their skill and theatricality, they help make Styx vital and relevant again. Playing a two-set (plus encore), 22-song show at MGM Music Hall on May 12, the entire band — led by longtime members Tommy Shaw and James Young, both lead guitarists — was a fireball from start to finish. Though the band has released a couple of new albums in the last few years, the setlist was wisely geared toward their classic period, with enough new songs to make it clear they are still a legitimate working band — creating decent original material with contributions from all current members — and not just one playing jukebox sets at summer music festivals.

Shaw and Young (known as JY) are as potent as ever on guitar, trading leads with skill and enthusiasm. Shaw also deftly played acoustic guitar. Though Gowan, in contrast with the dressings of progressive rock, had an arsenal of just one keyboard, he coaxed many cool sounds and impressive solos from it. That his instrument revolved on a pole was odd, but the arrangement suited his animated stage style. Sucherman, playing a large kit, did not get any solos, yet he was allowed to go crazy at the ends of a few songs, showcasing his dexterity and speed.

Vocally the band is perhaps at its most impressive. Shaw’s voice, originally a bit thin and high, is strong and sweet. Gowan’s lead vocals sounded exactly like DeYoung. JY sings some leads but mostly contributes to the tight vocal harmonies.

The crowd rabidly cheered during a number of highlight songs from the classic era, including “Blue Collar Man (Long Nights),” “The Grand Illusion,” “Crystal Ball,” “Rockin’ the Paradise,” “Fooling Yourself (The Angry Young Man),” and “Come Sail Away.” The band’s light show was fun and flashy, never overtaking the music but setting a festive tone all its own. The two-song encore set comprised “Mr. Roboto” and “Renegade,” spotlighting Gowan and Shaw, respectively.

I last saw Styx in 1981 on the Paradise Theater tour. It was, as the album title suggested, highly theatrical. But DeYoung’s penchant for big concepts and soft ballads like “Babe” soon met with resistance from the rest of the group, which wanted to rock. Styx became less relevant to me and many other fans, and eventually went on hiatus. For years I resisted checking in to see what they were up to. I am happy to report that Styx 2023 is a powerhouse outfit, wielding the most exciting aspects of progressive rock with radio-friendly hooks, riffs, and rhythms that set it apart from many of its peers. A number of songs were sing-alongs, the knowing crowd happily shouting out each word. I’m already looking forward to their next trip to Boston.

Loverboy, REO Speedwagon & Styx – Concert Review (August 6, 2022 – PNC Music Pavilion, Charlotte, NC)

Back before Christmas of 2021, it was announced that Loverboy, REO Speedwagon and Styx were coming to Charlotte. Loverboy was one of my wife’s favorites bands back in the day and she wanted to go see the show, so tickets were bought and months were spent waiting until the day finally came on August 6, 2022 at the PNC Music Pavilion in Charlotte, NC. It was a rainy afternoon and evening and this was an outdoor show. I wasn’t worried about the show itself because we had seats undercover, but the walk there was a little wet…but we didn’t care as it kept it cool and was a little fun to get wet.

The show kicked off on time and first up was Loverboy promptly at 7pm. The first thing I noticed was that they were old…I had forgotten that time had passed. I looked around and I noticed the crowd…well, I won’t say they were old too, but Depends did have a booth giving away free samples and Jonathan from Colonial Penn Life Insurance was there selling their $9.95 Plan (let’s see who gets that one). After remembering that people age, I got my mind back in to the show.

styx tour review 2022

Since they were the opening act, they only played 8 songs, but they were a great 8 songs. I will admit my wife was a little underwhelmed at first and so was I as the vocals didn’t sound that great and the playing was a little sloppy at times, but it got better, much better. Mike Reno didn’t move around a ton and neither did Paul Dean. However, Matt Frenette, the drummer, looked exactly the same in that red ball cap and he was still killing it on the drums. He hadn’t aged a bit. When they played “Kid Is Hot Tonite” and “Lovin’ Every Minute of It”, it took me right back to high school and it sounded incredible. I got chills. And when the final two songs came on “Turn Me Loose” and “Working for the Weekend”, the crowd was totally in to it and on their feet. It was a helluva a way to end the show with every one truly loving every minute of it…pun intended. If the whole show would’ve had the energy of those last two songs…they would have blown everyone off the stage that came after.

styx tour review 2022

Then after a very short break as the stage crew changed out sets really quickly, REO Speedwagon was up next. And let me tell you these guys sounded great and looked amazing. Note, these guys are all in their very late 60’s and early 70’s. Kevin Cronin looked and still has that killer voice. They still have one original member in Neil Doughty (the keyboardist) and he is the only member to be on every REO album and perform at every single REO live show that has ever been played…pretty awesome!

styx tour review 2022

The band played 12 songs which meant the set was tight and full of hits. They opened with “Don’t Let Him Go” and went right in to “Take it on the Run” and the crowd was really feeling it as was the band. These guys were having so much fun. Kevin is all over the stage as was Bruce Hall on bass and Dave Amatto on guitar. There were so many highlights including “Can’t Fight This Feeling” and “Time for Me To Fly” which are two of my favorite REO songs, but the big thrill were those final three songs with “Ridin’ The Storm Out”, “Keep On Loving You” and “Roll With The Changes”. Everyone was on their feet and having a great time.

styx tour review 2022

And here is how great Kevin looked and what a youthful energy and pure joy that was on his face all night. He seems like such a great guy and appreciates so much the fan reaction. He seemed genuine.

styx tour review 2022

The headliner that night was Styx and they played an astounding 16 songs which was more than I thought we were going to get. And I will go ahead and say this right out of the gate, they were the best sounding act of the three and my favorites. My wife liked REO Speedwagon better which I can see why (She did know more REO songs than Styx). The biggest surprise for me with Styx was Lawrence Gowan. I hadn’t seen them play and haven’t been a huge fan of their more recent albums, but Gowan is FREAKING FANTASTIC!! What a showman. The flamboyancy, the theatrical style and all around craziness was infectious. He is in a world all his own on that stage. He also has a keyboard that spins and he seems to be spinning right around with it. I think he was an amazing choice to replace Dennis DeYoung as his voice might be as good or better than Dennis.

styx tour review 2022

Okay, enough about Gowan though I don’t know if you can ever have enough of Gowan. The band was hitting on all cylinders all night. Tommy Shaw hasn’t aged a bit in both looks and vocals as he still can hit those high notes and just sounds awesome. What is great about a Styx live show is that so many people can sing. You have Tommy on some, Gowan on some and even JY gets a song. Share the love. Now James Young (JY) might be the only original guy left in the band, but they had a surprise for everyone as original member, bass player Chuck Panozzo, made an appearance and played bass on “Fooling Yourself (The Angry Young Man)”. Chuck is 73 and his health doesn’t allow him to keep up with the rigors of a full tour, but so cool to see him. He came out again later (but I had to miss that part).

styx tour review 2022

I was so excited to finally here Styx live and get to hear “Blue Collar Man (Long Nights)”, “The Grand Illusion” and “Lady” live and I admit, I got more chills when hearing them. The band played a couple really old songs and some really new songs off their most recent album “Crash of the Crown” and although I didn’t really know them, they still sounded fantastic. Fans would start to sit down on these songs, but would be right back on their feet when a classic was played.

styx tour review 2022

Sadly, I was only able to stay for about 10 of their 16 songs as my wife and I had to get up early and drive all day to go on vacation. I stayed until I heard one of my favorite Styx songs “Too Much Time on My Hands” and I am glad I did. After that we left and we did hear “Khedive” and an Elton John Cover of “Rocket Man” as we walked out. But we missed “Lost at Sea”, “Come Sail Away” and the encores “Mr. Roboto (which I am thrilled is back in the setlist) and “Renegade”.

Even leaving early, it was still a fantastic, fun-filled, nostalgic evening as all three of these bands were influential on my music tastes back in Middle and High School. Three more bands I can now say I have seen. If you want an enjoyable evening of great memories, check them out if they go to town…it was well worth it!! Now, where did I put my red leather pants…I wonder if they still fit!!

What a good night, I’m glad you had fun

It was a great date night with the wife.

All three bands played all the right songs. Looks like you had an incredible evening, thanks for sharing.

You are welcome. Thanks for reading. It is nice to get out to a show with the wife.

Ohh you missed Renegade… I’m actually surprised that Reo is still playing and man Mike Reno is a lot heavier than I remember him. He’s probably on the same cocktails as Vince Neil.

I know, I hate I missed that song. REO was awesome, as I said, my wife liked them the most. And Reno and Neil are using the same nutritionist. That’s mean…but he still sounded great unlike Neil.

Sounds like a good time! I always liked rain at the amphitheater shows, so long as I was under the cover lol.

The rain kept the temperature down so I like it for that, plus it made things more interesting.

Did Larry Gowan play any of his originals? He’s written some great songs over the years – Criminal Mind, Strange Animal, Moonlight Desires, etc.

No, I don’t believe he did. Probably would’ve been better than doing a cover song.

Setlist was changed slightly for Toronto’s August 16 concert. Gowan was a surprise to me and he sang Criminal Mind, being a Canadian he almost had to! He is an zmazing and talented artist.

Glad to see they change the setlist up slightly. And you are right, in Canada, he needed to do one of his songs.

Damn you had to split early but still a great night of live music as this is a great tour. I could not stop laughing about the depends and life insurance booths! Wow 😯! Gowan is fantastic and it’s cool you tossed down some love there.

Sucks, but still enjoyed it immensely. I like Gowan now.

Styx and REO Speedwagon on the same bill? What a score!

Like Liked by 2 people

It was a lot of fun…plus time with the wife you can’t beat either.

Yeah, what a fun date night!

I wonder if they had a shared bill during their Paradise Theatre/Hi Infidelity era. That must have been beyond awesome!

aarrgghh. I missed them they were here a month ago but the venue is a pain during the week. hoping Styx and REO come back around. great job.

Quick, what year is it? Lol that sounds like a great night. Good on ya for getting out to the gig!

Based on what some people were wearing I would’ve said the 80’s. No one had Reno’s red leather pants on though.

That was probably a good thing lol

Hey, heard them all Tuesday night August 16 in Toronto at Ontario Place, Budweiser stage, outdoor venue. To find out three bands were going to be performing at the same concert was a ticket I couldn’t pass up! Genius idea.

Your review was great. I would say we have aged too 🙂 Average age of the concert goer was 50+. Kevin Cronin said “Music keeps us young” and I agree. My favorites are Loverboy and REO. Both were awesome ! Was fun to find I still remembered most of the lyrics to my favourite songs. Definitely reminded me of my teenage years. Styx was loud and I didn’t know Denis DeYoung was no longer with the band. Was disappointed but not for long. Gowan was absolutely terrific as a musician and entertainer. How could he not sing one of us his songs for his fellow Canadians. His voice sounded exactly the same, clear and powerful. Criminal Mind instantly invoked memories of the music video – I remember some of it was comic book style. Truly a concert not to be missed. 80’s music stands the test of time. Thanks for new memories Loverboy, REO, and Styx. Keep Rocking, eh! 80’s Forever!

Thanks. I am 53 so I’m in that average age of a concert goer. Kevin was fantastic, he’s still got it. And funny you didn’t realize no Dennis as he’s been out of the band for around 25 years or more I believe.

I haven’t been following Styx and the other bands that closely since the 90’s. You move on, start liking some of the new music, but you never forget the best music. My pre-teen years up until my early 20’s… when I listened to the radio every day for hours.

No, you never do forget which is why the 80’s is always my favorite time for music.

80’s – No argument there!

One incredible show by all 3 bands in Camden, NJ. JY wasn’t there so they did Light Up instead of Miss America. REO did Tough Guys and In Your Letter. Such a perfectly enjoyable show. Styx was my first concert ever in 1977 and they were almost as awesome as they were back then (not that I can actually remember) haha. Hey, the show was also complete with pot smoke wafting through the air most of the night just like the early days. Fans were standing at least half of each band’s sets. GO SEE THEM ! ! !

Styx, REO Speedwagon Kick-Off Live and UnZoomed 2022 Tour with Loverboy

by Tina Benitez-Eves June 2, 2022, 9:38 am

Styx and REO Speedwagon have kicked off their  Live and UnZoomed  summer tour, which will run through mid-September 2022 along with special guests Loverboy.

Videos by American Songwriter

The Live and Unzoomed tour kicked off in Grand Rapids, Michigan on May 31 at the Van Andel Arena and will include a performance at the Blossom Music Center in Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio, concluding on Sept. 18 in Bangor, Maine.

It’s been four years since Styx and REO Speedwagon partnered for a co-headlining tour, something the two bands have been doing since 2000. “It’s just a winning combination,” said REO singer Kevin Cronin in a recent interview. Both bands, which share Illinois roots, first decided to start touring together after they both performed at a charity show.

“Not only had we never toured together, we’d never done a show together, and we (REO) have played with everybody,” said Cronin. “We booked a show in Duluth (MN) back in 2000, and it was just a powerhouse concert. The crowd went nuts and we all were like, ‘This is frickin’ great.’”

Cronin added, “We are not phoning it in. We’re not resting on our laurels. We’re always trying to get better. We’re always upping our game musically, production-wise. It’s great to have those guys, ‘cause we kind of motivate one another. We love those guys. They’re an amazing group. So, it’s a friendly competition. We kind of bring out the best in one another.”

styx tour review 2022

For REO Speedwagon, 2022 marks the 50th anniversary since Cronin joined the band, replacing original singer Terry Luttrel, and making his debut on the band’s second album R.E.O./T.W.O . Along with co-founder and keyboardist Neal Doughty and longtime bassist Bruce Hall, Cronin is one of the longest-running members of the band.

In 2022, Styx is also celebrating its 50th anniversary since the band signed their first recording contract with Wooden Nickel Records on Sept. 22, 1972, and released their self-titled debut. To date, the band has released 17 albums, including their most recent Crash of the Crown in 2021.

“I can’t think of a better way of touring the U.S.A. … than with good friends we’ve known for years and performed with on many a stage,” said Styx singer Tommy Shaw in a statement. “What a great night of music this will be.”

styx tour review 2022

Styx's 2022 lineup has 'home run hitters at every position'

Styx, left to right, Chuck Panozzo, Ricky Phillips, Todd Sucherman, Tommy Shaw, James “JY” Young, Lawrence Gowan.

After a half-century of rock stardom, Styx has become one of the most recognizable bands in the U.S. Distinguished primarily by their unmistakable layered harmonies and catchy synth melodies in hits like “Fooling Yourself” and “Come Sail Away,” the first band ever to release four multi-platinum albums in a row has become synonymous with the progressive-pop genre.

Despite past scruples, Styx persists, supporting their new album, “Crash of the Crown,” with a national tour that stops in Cincinnati in June. I was lucky enough to chat with guitarist and vocalist James “JY” Young recently about the new tunes, his experience growing up in Chicago and about persistence in the face of differences in creative vision that can make or break a band.

Question: You're from Chicago. Do you still hang around up there?

Answer: I live in a suburb of Chicago. Like all large cities, it's evolved and changed in a variety of different ways. I went to Calumet High School on the South Side. Shaka Khan went there a few years after I did. The children of Bo Diddley and Willie Dixon went to school there. The first vinyl LP I ever bought was "Bo Diddley is a Gunslinger."

Q: Do you think there was something particular to Chicago that made your sound?

Need a break? Play the USA TODAY Daily Crossword Puzzle.

A: Chicago is a multicultural thing. It’s a center of jazz going back 100 years, and it's known for having a great symphony orchestra. The bands that came out of Chicago in the '50s were like the Buckinghams and the Cryan’ Shames and the American Breed. The lead singer in the American Breed, Gary Loizzo, became a recording engineer and recorded a number of our albums. Then there's the guys in Chicago. We did a couple of shows with them way back when. But ultimately we had our own path.

Q: You have an engineering degree. Was there a choice that you had to make between "normal" life and music?

A: I come from a musical family. My aunt was a church organist. My dad heard a song and would sit down and bang it out on the piano. My older sister was also quite gifted. We all started on piano at age 5 in our family, and then were all encouraged to play an instrument in grade school and high school band.

There was a family construction business my grandfather started, and I was in line to take it over if I so desired. That's why the engineering degree seemed right. Back then, it was mechanical and aerospace, but there was virtually no space program when I started college in ‘63. Manned travel into space didn't happen until towards the end of my time there. I really wanted to quit college and just do music. Dad said, “Just get your degree, and then I'll stop bugging you.”

Q: Your new album, “Crash of the Crown,” is still '70s prog rock, but also incorporates modern production. What influenced that production style?

A: This most recent record was probably the least involved in making a record that I've ever been. The pandemic was going on, and I spent time with my wife. Tommy called me up and said, “Hey, you need to come down here, play some guitar on this record, and do some singing.” So I went down and got all my parts done in a couple of days. God bless Tommy, because we have a new record and, if I was in charge, we wouldn't have had that. There's a good team spirit in the band. We've got home run hitters at every position in Styx at this point.

Q: You do seem to be a very collaborative band. Everybody works together to write. How does that process work?

A: In this instance, it was Will Evankovich, who has become a new member of the band and Tommy's collaborator. Tommy had gone off to do Damn Yankees with Jack Blades and Ted Nugent. Will was part of that circle, and Tommy enjoyed working and writing with him. He paid to have Will move to Nashville, where Tommy lives. He has a studio in his basement and Will is an engineer and can write and sing. So they just started writing. And then Lawrence came down and joined them, and all of a sudden there's a record. So they called me down to play and sing.

Q: Do you have any words of wisdom for how to successfully navigate band drama?

A: There's an old Kenny Rogers song: “Know when to hold them, and know when to fold them.” Try and find the middle ground. And if you can't find it, then figure out what has to happen next. Dennis (DeYoung) went off to do solo records, and that sort of pushed me to do solo records and Tommy to do solo records – that's when he joined Damn Yankees. We've evolved, but what we do now still resonates with our first few records.

Photos & Live Review: Styx at Macon City Auditorium 4-21-22

20220422-20220422-Styx7

Photos by Chuck Holloway Review by David Cox

On the evening of April 21st, 2022, Styx performed to a sold out crowd in Macon, Georgia. Macon City Auditorium doors opened at 6:30 pm, and fans flowed in like a lazy river, smiling and laughing excitedly as they made their way to their seats. Soon, Styx lined up to snap pictures standing in front of the impressive looking stage.

Time passed quickly and at 7:30, the moment we had all been waiting for had finally arrived: Styx–Live! As the show began, Tommy and the band appeared slowly from a purple hue of stage lights. It is no secret that most of the ladies in attendance were swooning over Tommy Shaw dressed in tight white jeans and a white blazer over his undershirt, wielding a black Gibson Les Paul guitar. We all must admit that Tommy is the quintessential rock star!

The crowd was wild and on their feet as Styx exploded into a killer rock show like we all saw in the late seventies. Promoting their new album, Styx opened with the new song “The Fight of Our Lives”, from their latest dynamic release entitled, Crash of the Crown , which was released June 18, 2021.  For two solid hours, Styx had us reeling with hit after hit, including “Blue Collar Man,” “The Grand Illusion”, “Lady”, “Light Up”, “Man In The Wilderness”, “Too Much Time On My Hands”, “Suite Madame Blue”, “Crystal Ball”, “Fooling Yourself (The Angry Young Man)”, and “Come Sail Away”. We had absolutely no time to rest between songs.

Three-fourths into the show, Tommy Shaw stopped everything to introduce a VERY SPECIAL GUEST, bassist Chuck Panozzo, a longtime member of Styx. He founded the group in Chicago with his fraternal twin brother, drummer John Panozzo and singer/keyboardist Dennis DeYoung. He toured part-time from 1999 to 2003 due to an ongoing illness and has returned with Styx on a regular basis since then, sharing bass duties with Ricky Phillips both in the studio and onstage.

In addition to the generous selection of earlier Styx classics, the band played seven new songs from Crash Of The Crown that were no less than excellent. However, they were not finished yet. Their encore took us back again, first with “Mr. Roboto” and “Renegade”! The fans rocked out to the very end and no one left early. We all knew from the beginning that during a Styx rock show … “SWEET, SWEET SOUNDS WILL FILL THE AIR.”

I was truly fortunate in my earlier years growing up to have my Uncle Bill Decker as a rock and roll mentor and concert companion. At an early age, he introduced me to 1960’s and 1970’s big names in current rock and roll music.  Currently at 60 years old, I am still rocking to the same priceless music I cut my teeth on. It is timeless, and never gets old. To date, I have seen hundreds of live shows. Incredibly, the recent Styx show, at Macon City Auditorium, ranks as one of the best performances I have seen in all my years.

Styx remains a tight, current day supergroup. If you get the chance to see this tour, please go. It is a trip back to the days when rock music touched your very soul.

Brother Chuck! Look how well we did. And, we’ve never even met in person. Let’s do this again. I did well in my English and Math studies in college, and now it finally paid off where it counts to me. Let me know the next show you shoot, and I will see if I can attend to enable me to write the review.

Styx’s latest studio album, 2021’s  Crash of the Crown , was recorded during the trying times of the pandemic. The multi-Platinum rockers are James “JY” Young (lead vocals, guitars), Shaw (lead vocals, guitars), Chuck Panozzo (bass, vocals), Todd Sucherman (drums, percussion), Lawrence Gowan (lead vocals, keyboards) and Ricky Phillips (bass, guitar, vocals). Styx have earned eight Top 10 singles on the Hot 100, beginning with “Lady” and “Come Sail Away.” Others include their #1, “Babe,” as well as “The Best of Times” and “Too Much Time on My Hands.” Their multi-platinum albums include 1981’s Paradise Theatre and 1977’s The Grand Illusion .

Formed in 1967, and fronted by iconic vocalist Kevin Cronin since 1972, REO Speedwagon ‘s non-stop touring and recording jump-started the burgeoning rock movement in the Midwest. Their landmark Hi Infidelity album in 1980 contained the hit singles “Keep on Loving You” and “Take It on the Run.” The album spent 15 weeks in the #1 slot and has since earned the RIAA’s coveted Diamond Award for surpassing sales of 10 million units in the United States.

From 1977 to 1989, REO Speedwagon released nine consecutive albums all certified Platinum or higher. Their lineup features Cronin, Bruce Hall (bass), Neal Doughty (keyboards), Dave Amato (guitar), and Bryan Hitt (drums).

Loverboy formed in 1979, when vocalist Mike Reno was introduced to guitarist Paul Dean – both veterans of several bands on the Canadian scene. Along with Reno and Dean, the band still includes original members Doug Johnson on keyboards and Matt Frenette on drums, with Ken “Spider” Sinnaeve replacing the late Scott Smith on bass.

Loverboy has earned four multi-Platinum plaques, including the four-million-selling Get Lucky . Their string of hits includes “Working for the Weekend,” and such classic rock staples as “The Kid is Hot Tonite” and “Turn Me Loose.”

Brian Wilson To Be Placed in Conservatorship Due to Dementia

Baybluesman

Went to a show on Styx’s Paradise Theater tour in 1981, and they blew the roof off of the Civic Arena (aka “The Igloo”) in Pittsburgh, PA. After a 35+ year hiatus (hard to believe, so many years seemed to pass so quickly), I saw them at the Pier Six Pavilion in Baltimore, MD, and I gotta say, Styx had not lost a step, and had the crowd in their hands – musically, vocally, and on stage presence – they still had it all going on. I still miss Dennis DeYoung, as he contributed a lot more to Styx’s muscular sound than he gets credit for, and gets stuck with the Kilroy debate and some of their softer side, such as “Babe”, which I personally still believe is a great tune, if you remove the critique labels. In any event, while a good number of classic rock bands have been regrouping for what seems to be a fast buck and nostalgic glory, Styx soldiers on, still creating good new music, while entertaining their fans with great live performances, and not being a tribute band of themselves.

Styx, REO Speedwagon and Loverboy Launch 2022 Tour: Set List

Styx , REO Speedwagon and Loverboy kicked off their Summer 2022 Live and UnZoomed tour last night in Grand Rapids, Mich.

You can see the full set list for all three acts below.

The Live and Unzoomed tour visits the Blossom Music Center in Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio, tonight and is currently scheduled to conclude on Sept. 18 in Bangor, Maine. (You can get the complete show and ticket information at StyxWorld.com .)

After beginning with "The Fight of Our Lives," the opening track of 2021's Crash of the Crown , Styx stayed focused on '70s smashes such as "Blue Collar Man (Long Nights)," "Come Sail Away" and "Renegade" for most of their 12-song set , revisiting their latest album one more time mid-set for "Reveries."

REO Speedwagon devoted nearly a third of their 13-song set to songs from their 10-times-platinum 1982 album Hi Infidelity . They did sneak in a couple of treats for fans of their early years in the form of two songs from 1972's R.E.O. / T.W.O , including the set-opening "Music Man."

Loverboy's eight-song opening set began with "Notorious" from their 1987 album,  Wildside , and was dominated by the biggest hits from early '80s albums such as Get Lucky , Keep It Up and Lovin' Every Minute of It . About REO Speedwagon:

Formed in 1967, signed in 1971, and fronted by iconic vocalist Kevin Cronin since 1972, REO Speedwagon’s unrelenting drive, as well as non-stop touring and recording jump-started the burgeoning rock movement in the Midwest. Platinum albums and radio staples soon followed, setting the stage for the release of the band’s explosive HI INFIDELITY in 1980, which contained the massive hit singles “Keep On Loving You” and “Take It On the Run.” That landmark album spent 15 weeks in the No. 1 slot and has since earned the RIAA’s coveted 10X Diamond Award for surpassing sales of 10 million units in the United States.

From 1977 to 1989, REO Speedwagon released nine consecutive albums all certified Platinum or higher. Today, REO Speedwagon has sold more than 40 million albums around the globe, and Cronin and bandmates Bruce Hall (bass), Neal Doughty (keyboards), Dave Amato (guitar), and Bryan Hitt (drums) are still electrifying audiences worldwide in concert with hits and fan-favorites such as “Ridin’ The Storm Out,” “Can’t Fight This Feeling,” “Time For Me To Fly,” “Roll With The Changes,” “Keep On Loving You,” “Take It On the Run,” and many, many more.

REO Speedwagon remained busy throughout the pandemic before the band was able to return to the road. Beginning in April 2020, Cronin began a series of webisodes from his home titled “Songs & Stories From Camp Cronin.” Consisting of anecdotes and acoustic performances from him and his family, the series posted 24 episodes. Cronin and members of REO gave back over the past 16 months by participating in charity events for St. Jude Children’s Hospital, Marilou & Mark Hamill’s USC McMorrow Neighborhood Academic Initiative, John Oates’ “Oates Song Fest,” “Stars to the Rescue,” Acoustic-4-A-Cure, and more. Additionally, while Cronin began keeping a journal of the band’s 2016 UK tour, he never stopped writing and recently submitted what turned out to be his life story, as well as his telling of REO Speedwagon’s history. He says, “Putting out an autobiography is risky. Once it’s out there’s nowhere to hide!” More information on his autobiography will be released shortly.

With their trademark red leather pants, bandannas, big rock sound and high-energy live shows, Loverboy has sold more than 10 million albums, earning four multi-platinum plaques, including the four-million-selling GET LUCKY, and a trio of double-Platinum releases in their self-titled 1980 debut, 1983’s KEEP IT UP and 1985’s LOVIN’ EVERY MINUTE OF IT. Review: styx and reo speedwagon's soft rock still in high demand at minnesota state fair.

Maybe an indicator of how hard things have been these past few years, a double-bill of soft-rock seemed to be just what the doctor ordered Thursday night at the Minnesota State Fair.

REO Speedwagon and Styx paired up at the grandstand on a muggy night that was lightened by some of the breeziest rock hits of the '70s and '80s.

Both the Illinois-reared bands have played Minnesota's fair many times (especially Styx), including a previous twofer show in 2009. But something about this time felt less like a stiff casino-showroom oldies flashback and more like a classic-rock affair that truly rocked.

Both bands admirably recreated their old sounds, albeit with help from younger members. They also impressively sold out the venue, drawing 13,165 on a weeknight — a feat maybe helped by the fact that many of their fans are now retirees.

Romantically mushy songs like "I Can't Fight This Feeling" and "Lady" — which would have found fans waving cigarette lighters back in the day — instead had them excitedly pulling out cell phones to capture the moment; yes, some with the flash still on. And rockier numbers like "Renegade" and "Roll With the Changes" (each band's respective finale) had the crowd cranking along on air guitars.

Styx is down to three heyday-era members, with guitarists/singers Tommy Shaw and James "JY" Young plus bassist Chuck Panozzo, the latter of whom only joined for a few songs Thursday. Nowadays, the band's key player (no pun) is keyboardist/singer Lawrence Gowan, hired in 1999 to fill in for original lead vocalist Dennis DeYoung.

Wearing a floral, sequined jacket straight out of a "Golden Girls"-themed drag brunch, Gowan was comparable to Journey's Arnel Pineda in the way he convincingly mimicked his predecessor in "Lady" and the encore kickoff "Mr. Roboto." But he's even more of a ham than DeYoung was. His 360-spinning keyboard remains a hokey distraction. His lengthy piano solo before "Come Sail Away" comically dragged on. And his between-song banter rivaled David Lee Roth for goofiness.

Gowan did wisely show off the band's familiarity with Minnesota's fair by introducing Young as "sweeter than Sweet Martha's cookies." Young, in turn, drew laughs by crediting 1976's Rush-flavored nugget "Light Up" for sparking today's wave of marijuana legalization. That's about as current as Styx's set got, but that's OK.

Topping off the night, REO returned with singer Kevin Cronin and keyboardist Neal Doughty still leading the ship since their early heyday.

Cronin, 70, is up there with Cheap Trick's Robin Zander as one of the few '70s frontmen still able to hit most of his vocal range. He proved as much early in the set with "Take It on the Run" and later in "Time for Me to Fly."

The singer proved as relatable and affable as ever, too.

"Is it just me, or does it seem like the world is getting crazier every day?" Cronin asked before "Live Every Moment." "I come up here to Minnesota, the nicest place in the world, and it still makes my heart happy."

Even a cynical music critic has to play Minnesota Nice after that kind of love fest.

Chris Riemenschneider has been covering the Twin Cities music scene since 2001, long enough for Prince to shout him out during "Play That Funky Music (White Boy)." The St. Paul native authored the book "First Avenue: Minnesota's Mainroom" and previously worked as a music critic at the Austin American-Statesman in Texas.

CONCERT REVIEW: STYX Defies The Odds and Ages and Keeps Rocking In The Paradise – Pikes Peak Center, Colorado Springs (February 25th, 2023)

styx tour review 2022

Some of the bands I go to see live have been part of my life soundtrack for a very long time. Styx falls into that category. I first heard 1975’s “Equinox” LP in my brother’s room when I was 8 years old. By then, I had probably heard “Lady” on the radio but it was “Suite Madame Blue,” with its progressive rock heavy ending, that really got me hooked. Although “Equinox” was the fifth studio record of the band, it was still prior to the arrival of Tommy Shaw , who in my book is what made Styx something special. The following year, an 8-track of “Crystal Ball” took up residence in our family car stereo, and with it that wonderfully melancholy title track that Tommy Shaw sang and wrote.

In the years to come I would purchase records of each of the subsequent blockbuster albums like “The Grand Illusion,” “Pieces of Eight,” “Cornerstone” and then the cassette of “Paradise Theatre.” Years later, I would replace the entire Styx catalog with CD versions. Now they’re on my phone. The point is to reveal just how enduring the music has been in my life; it’s lasted longer than three other musical formats. And while the critics never cared for Styx much, the Chicago band mostly made all the right moves for this listener, especially when they steered toward the heavier songs.

Dennis DeYoung is still not part of the touring band, and in all honesty, I see the band moving forward in a positive direction without him, though credit is rightfully due in recognizing that he wrote or co-wrote many of the band’s classic tunes. Much like there are those who will say Journey isn’t Journey without Steve Perry , there are fans who can’t accept Styx without DeYoung . But the band’s last two records, “The Mission” and “Crash of the Crown,” have earned places that rank quite high in the overall catalog. I believe it. And so does the band, apparently, because they played more songs from the newest record than any other album in the vast catalog during the two-set show in Colorado Springs Saturday night.

styx tour review 2022

As one might expect, most of the “rock essentials” were also in the set list, but the fact that the band opened each of the two sets with a track from 2021’s “Crash of the Crown” is a testament to how strongly they feel about their new music. And for a band that’s been around for over 50 years, that’s pretty astounding. Most bands that have been at it this long are mostly playing the golden oldies, but Styx performed 7 songs from their latest record, and they fit in perfectly with that classic Styx sound. Perhaps more remarkably, there was no mass run for beer or the bathroom. Shaw ’s vocals on the acoustic-based “Sound the Alarm” were particularly impressive.

So about that 50 years figure…one has to acknowledge that there have been some musical chairs played during that lengthy span. For most of the show, there was only one guy on stage who can claim to be a founding member. That would be James “JY” Young , who generally was more reserved on stage than in decades past. Nevertheless, Young tapped into another gear when he fronted the rousing rocker “Miss America,” and it was strong. At age 73, and having recently lost his dear wife, Suzanne , it was not surprising that he was a bit more demure. What was surprising, however, is the spark plug energy of Tommy Shaw , who at 69 was jumping around on stage and wailing on the guitar leads like an “Angry Young Man.” His stage presence and remarkably strong vocals served to “Light Up” the crowd. Props must go out to the entire band, who vocally still can serve up incredible harmonies that were on full display on “Lady,” and “To Those.” Legend has it they are still doing it without the aid of backing vocal tracks, and that deserves extra praise. Live music, the way it should be!

styx tour review 2022

The set-list was full of sing-alongs, of which the mature crowd eagerly joined in, and the band sounded surprisingly energized and tight. With Lawrence Gowan now having taken DeYoung ’s role on keyboards and vocals for more than two decades, this band has played many of these songs over and over, which could make them sound both tight and tired. But there were few signs of tired on stage, aside from the brief appearance of founding bass player Chuck Panozzo , who has maintained a very limited role with the band since declaring that he’s living with HIV. His replacement, Ricky Phillips , has been with the band for two decades now, and though he is 71 years old, you’d never believe it from watching him play. It’s a classy move that they give Chuck some stage time still.

The youngsters of the live act, drummer Todd Sucherman (who is absolutely amazing) and producer/writer “new guy” Will Evankovich , who has managed to conjure up the classic Styx sound on their last two releases, are keeping the spirit of the band running like a pair or “Renegades.”

styx tour review 2022

There’s always a fear when seeing a band that has been at it as long as Styx that they will put on a show that indicates they’ve stayed too long at the party and tarnished their legacy. But Styx with Tommy Shaw at the helm has maintained a professional standard and proven themselves to be a class act. I mention the ages of JY , Tommy and Ricky because they’ve done such a good job of not coming off as guys way past their prime. Styx is still a great live act playing a strong catalog of classics while proudly featuring new music that stands up and slots in well. Not many long running acts can say that.

The band made four stops in Colorado on this run, which is more than unusual, but ticket sales have been brisk and the fan support is still there. So regardless of whatever the critics might have to say about Styx , a couple thousand fans showed their approval on their feet all night as they were thrilled to be invited to “Come Sail Away” once more. If this is the last time they come through Colorado, I’ll be happy to have witnessed that they finished on a high note. Still worth seeing after all these years.

A guitar virtuoso from the age of 9, Nancy (and her sister Ann) lead the multi-platinum rock group, Heart, who have sold upwards of 35 million albums. Nancy is revered as an ingenious guitar player, and as a gifted lead vocalist. In fact, that’s Nancy singing on Heart’s first Number One hit, “These Dreams.” As a songwriter, Nancy has co-written a collection of indelible songs that have earned their way into the classic rock canon (“Magic Man,” “Crazy on You,” “Barracuda,” “Straight On”). During an era when females where scarce in rock ‘n’ roll, Nancy helped carve out a place for women to front rock bands and dominate on stage. Her icon status was cemented when Heart was inducted into the Rock ‘N’ Roll Hall Of Fame in 2012.

In addition to her storied rock career, Nancy has also built a successful career as a film composer, including lauded scores for a number of Cameron Crowe films such as Say Anything, Jerry Maquire, Almost Famous, Vanilla Sky and Elizabethtown. In 2020, Nancy turned her attention to recording her first solo album. Released on Carry On Music in May 2021,  YOU AND ME  sees Nancy plaing guitar and singing on all the tracks, including 9 new, original songs, and a stunning cover version of Bruce Springsteen’s “The Rising.”

  1. Styx (The Live and UnZoomed Tour) Concert Review

Styx. The Chicago-based rock band turns 50 this year, but showed no signs of slowing down as The Live and UnZoomed Tour (with Loverboy and REO Speedwagon) stopped at Jiffy Lube Live last night. 24 hours later, and I'm still tapping my feet. 3. Concert Review: A Fireball Performance from Styx at the MGM Music Hall

Though the band has released a couple of new albums in ...

Some of the bands I go to see live have been part of my life soundtrack for a very long time. Styx falls into that category. I first heard 1975's "Equinox" LP in my brother's room when I was 8 years old. By then, I had probably heard "Lady" on the radio but it was "Suite Madame Blue," with its progressive rock heavy ending, that really got me hooked. Although "Equinox" was ...
