Wout van Aert won stage 5 of the Tour of Britain

A final-kilometre attack from Wout van Aert earned Jumbo-Visma their fifth win in a row at the Tour of Britain , with four-time stage winner Olav Kooij handing over victory to his invaluable lead-out rider in Felixstowe.

The whole squad taking a wrong turn on a roundabout in the final 10km threatened to let a team other than Jumbo-Visma win a stage of this year’s race, but the yellow and black jerseys were soon back at the front of the peloton, leading into a late flyer for Van Aert.

Ethan Vernon (Great Britain) took second from the bunch ahead of Danny van Poppel (Bora-Hansgrohe) in third. Van Aert’s small gap on the line will see him move into the race lead with three days remaining.

Joey Rosskopf (Q36.5 Pro Cycling), Abram Stockman (TDT-Unibet) and Callum Ormiston (Global 6 Cycling) had been up the road for most of the 192km stage, but were brought back before the final.

“I’m feeling really happy of course,” Van Aert said after taking what was only his second road win of the year. “It’s always tricky to make a plan like that, and if you can execute it like this it’s a lot of satisfaction. Another great day for the team, and I’m really, really proud of this one.

“Yesterday evening we had a look at the final corners, talking about the lead-out, and first I came up with [the plan to attack] as a joke slash idea, and we started to think about it. We knew even if someone would respond immediately that the bunch would still be stretched out and Olav would still have a good chance of winning the sprint, so we tried something else.

“I think that’s a nice thing about cycling, enough times it’s boring and you can expect what’s going to happen, so it’s nice to spice things up.”

A change in result after four similar stages

Stage 5 of the Tour of Britain headed to the east of England, starting and finishing in Felixstowe and taking in a 192km loop around Suffolk, making it the longest stage of this year’s race.

As with many of the stages, the day kicked off with a fast battle for the breakaway. Five riders got away fairly quickly, with King of the Mountains leader James Fouché (Bolton Equities Black Spoke) joined by Harry Birchill (Saint Piran), Kamil Małecki (Q36.5 Pro Cycling), Hartthijs De Vries (TDT-Unibet) and Jack Brough (Great Britain). However, unlike the preceding stages, the peloton were not particularly keen for this group to get too far ahead, keeping the gap very small before catching them again before the first climb after just 20km of racing.

Fouché still managed to crest the climb first to add to his KoM lead, but missed out on the next break that went. The new group was made up of Joey Rosskopf (Q36.5 Pro Cycling), Abram Stockman (TDT-Unibet) and Callum Ormiston (Global 6 Cycling). This move was allowed to go, and the trio soon had a three-minute lead as the situation finally calmed down.

Stockman won both the KoM and the intermediate sprint, and then from there the race was very quiet with no more point-scoring opportunities in the 127km remaining. Naturally, it was once again Jumbo-Visma who were controlling things, but they were clearly feeling a little more generous towards the break on a sunny day in Suffolk.

After a long stretch of very little happening, the peloton finally started to ramp up the chase going into the final 40km, and the gap gradually began to shrink. It was down to 30 seconds with 24km remaining, with Ineos Grenadiers glued to the wheels of the Jumbo riders charged with closing the gap. Olav Kooij and Wout van Aert were not seen putting their noses in the win at any time during the chase, showing just how much they’ve been able to save for the sprint finishes this week.

Ormiston was the first to drop out of the break, with 20km to go, followed by Stockman, whilst Rosskopf pushed on for the longest, holding on valiantly until he was caught with 5km to go.

Approaching the finale, some teams did try to get in the way of Jumbo-Visma’s lead-out, but it was an error on a roundabout with 7km to go - where the Jumbo train went the wrong way - that really caused the Dutch team some problems, but they soon found their way back to the front for the finale.

Van Aert was on the front of the peloton heading into the final kilometre, appearing to be setting up another sprint for Kooij, but going into one of last corners Kooij slightly grabbed the breaks round the bend, slowing up the peloton and letting Van Aert accelerate away from the bunch. A moment of hesitation from the peloton and the blocking action from the slowing Jumbo riders allowed Van Aert to get an immediate jump, which the strong Belgian was able to hold all the way to the line, holding off the sprinting peloton behind.

It was Ethan Vernon who sprinted to second just ahead of Danny van Poppel, with Kooij out of the placings for the first time this race, instead sitting up across the line to celebrate yet another win for his team, this time a result of not just strength but a successful tactical play.

The first rider to finish with any kind of time gap, Van Aert goes into the race lead - taking the jersey from Kooij - three seconds ahead of Vernon and Max Kanter (Movistar) on the virtual podium.

Riders are set to battle it out at the Tour of Britain 2023

After a truncated edition in 2022 due to police having to head off to administer the Queen's funeral, Britain's biggest race - the Tour of Britain - returns for (hopefully) a full run in 2023.

It's a much more compact edition this year with the race taking place mostly in the middle of the country so if you're anywhere south of Manchester and north of Reading you have precious few excuses for not getting to the roadside to cheer on your favourite rider.

Among the riders set to light up the race are previous winner Wout van Aert and 2022 second place finisher Tom Pidcock , who'll hope to go one better in 2023.

Tour of Britain overview

Tour of britain 2023 route.

Stage 1,   Sunday 3 September

Route: Greater Manchester to Altrincham

Today's route is near identical to the final stage of the 2019 tour, starting in Altrincham and travelling to Manchester in an anti-clockwise direction taking in the surrounding area’s undulating terrain, including the category two climb of Grains Bar (2.4km at 5.8%) and category one Ramsbottom Rake (1.3km at 8.8%). Those climbs might not sound like much, but together with a number of unclassified rises were enough to significantly reduce the peloton to just a few dozen riders after Ineos Grenadiers applied the pressure.

The race did eventually culminate in a reduced bunch sprint won by Mathieu van der Poel, but not before we were entertained by a relentless flurry of attacks as teams struggled for control.

Tour of Britain route profile 2023

Stage 2, Monday 4 September

Route: Wrexham to Wrexham

At just 109.9km, this is a remarkably short stage by any standards, and as a result could witness some atypical racing. Shorter stages tend to produce more intense racing, with riders able to attack earlier on in the knowledge that they won't have to sustain their efforts for as long.

So although the route doesn’t offer many springboards to launch attacks, travelling westwards across the border and into Cheshire rather than eastwards towards the hills of the Clwydian Range to the west, expect riders to try their luck regardless.

Most important of all will be the Eyton Hill, the category three climb summited with just 18.5km left to ride. It’s close enough to the finish for attackers to fully commit themselves, but will the shallow gradients (averaging only around two and three percent) be enough to establish meaningful gaps?

Tour of Britain route profile 2023

Stage 3, Tuesday 5 September

Route: Goole to Beverley

Setting off from the small market town of Goole, the riders will head north-eastwards to Bridlington, from where they will travel southwards along the coast and then inland again for a finish in Beverley. For the residents of Beverley, this will be a chance to witness a stage finish after the minster town had previously hosted the beginning of Tour de Yorkshire stages in 2016 and 2018, the former won by Harry Tanfield from a successful break, the latter by Dylan Groenewegen in a sprint.

Much like the course of the town’s famous racecourse, the parcours today before arriving at Beverly is mostly flat, but there are a few potential obstacles to overcome if this is to be a sprint finish. The category three hills up Towthorpe Lane and Langtoft must both be climbed during the first of the stage, and after that comes a stretch of about 35km near the coastline which could, if the wind blows strong and in the right direction, cause echelons. But this should in theory be the most nailed-on stage for the sprinters so far.

Tour of Britain route profile 2023

Stage 4, Wednesday 6 September

Route: Sherwood Forest to Newark-on-Trent

After setting off from Edwinstone in Sherwood Forest, famous for its association with Robin Hood, the riders face the first to the day’s two category three climbs, Kilton Hill, just 15km into the stage. Then, after briefly crossing into Yorkshire and riding through Haworth, where a monument to Tom Simpsons can be found, they will travel southwards again to tackle the next climb, Red Hill Lane.

There’s a whole 85km between the top of Red Hill Lane and the finish, so plenty of time for the race to settle down for a bunch sprint.

Tour of Britain route profile 2023

Stage 5, Thursday 7 September

Route: Felixstowe to Felixstowe

Perhaps to make up for the lack of any difficult terrain, the organisers have rendered stage five less straightforward than it would otherwise have been by extending it to a total of 192.4km. That makes it by far the longest stage of the race, and could prevent this from being the predictable sprint stage it looks on paper.

Small undulations in the road that would otherwise have been passed over without a second though will sting the legs of the weaker riders, and being so close to the coast a crosswind could encourage a strong team to the front on any exposed roads.

Tour of Britain route profile 2023

Stage 6, Friday 8 September

Route: Southend-on-Sea to Harlow

Today’s stage is likely to be the last chance for the sprinters to compete for a stage win. And it should be about as nailed-on for them as any stage in the year’s race — there is only one official climb to be overcome, and it’s only a mild category three one tackled with 46km left between its summit and the finish for the peloton to bring back any optimistic attackers who try to use its shallow gradients to get away.

Tour of Britain route profile 2023

Stage 7, Saturday 9 September

Route: Tewkesbury to Gloucester

The organisers have made the most of the lumpy terrain of the Cotswolds to devise a route that should be selective, and one of the most important days in the GC race.

There is one climb up the category two Winchcombe Hill just 20km after the roll-out in Tewksbury, but the real action will be reserved for the final 30km. First the category two Crawley Hill, which features a nasty ramp at over 20%, then an uncategorized yet deceptively hard 3km rise to the village of Edge, which includes a similarly sharp ramp of 15%.

Tour of Britain route profile 2023

Stage 8, Sunday 10 September

Route: Margam Country Park to Caerphilly

The climbs to be taken on might not be especially different than those that have preceded them earlier in the week, but there is still a notable upgrade in terms of severity.

That’s clear when the race heads up to the outskirts of Bannau Brycheiniog (formerly Brecon Beacons) national park to take on the first two climbs of the day, Rhigos and Bryn Du, which have both been designated the maximum difficulty racing of category one.

And after a 35km south-easterly trek from the top of the latter comes a double-ascent of the day’s most important climb, and the one on which the entire fate of the Tour of Britain could be decided — Caerphilly Mountain.

In truth it’s more of a hill than a mountain, lasting just 1.3km, but that’s still enough road for its viscous average gradient of 10% to really sting and force a selection.

We continue with a drive to Ironbridge, a UNESCO World Heritage site. Completed in 1779, it was the first major bridge in the world to be made of cast iron, marking a significant milestone in the Industrial Revolution.  Learn more about how it was constructed and enjoy magnificent views of the English countryside.

Arrive at the ancient medieval town of Shrewsbury, famous for the birthplace of Charles Darwin. This will be your base for the next two nights, and there is plenty to explore in this bustling market town. On rare occasions, you may stay in Chester instead of Shrewsbury

Snowdonia, Wales

Snowdonia, Wales

On Day 2, we head into the heart of Northern Wales to Conwy Castle, one of the great fortresses of medieval Europe, and discover its rich and long history. Explore its well-preserved walls and walk the battlements for a truly medieval experience. You’ll also have time to marvel at the historic town walls, charming medieval streets, and the picturesque harbor nearby.

Guided tour of Tower Bridge

Tower Bridge in London

Tower Bridge, constructed in Neo-Gothic style in the late 19th century, is not only one of the most visually striking and gorgeous bridges in the world but also a technological marvel!

To allow ships to pass the central section was designed as a hydraulic-powered bascule (French for seesaw) system, with each end weighing over 1,100 tons, impressively lifting up to an angle of 83 degrees.

On your guided tour you will enjoy stunning panoramic views of London as you look down on the citizens of London as you walk across the see-through glass floor between the iconic towers.

Lunch overlooking London from the Shard

Whilst we typically suggest lunch and meal options with our guests while we are on tour, ascending The Shard – the tallest building in London, to enjoy a bite to eat or glass of Champagne whilst looking out across the London skyline from the 32nd floor, is simply essential!

Tate Modern Gallery Tour

the entrance to the Tate Modern in London.

Our final stop for day 2 of our four-day tour of London is an absolute must for any art lovers!

The Tate Modern houses Britain’s national collection of international modern and contemporary art. As well as the array of thought-provoking exhibitions, the permanent collection contains work by masters such as Pablo Picasso, Damian Hirst, Salvador Dali, and Andy Warhol among others too numerous to mention

There is no fee to enter the Tate Modern, however, a guided tour experience with your personal art historian will elevate the experience to a whole new level and provide the level of context and description required to gain a deeper appreciation of the works rather than confronting them cold.

The White Cliffs of Dover – Vera Lynn (1940)

The White Cliffs of Dover are not just an awe-inspiring sight and incredible coastline walk, they have historically enjoyed a significant role throughout British history and have come to symbolize hope and peace for generations of British citizens.

The raw power and beauty of the chalk-white cliffs towering over the crashing waves of the Atlantic Ocean are one of the most poetic sights in all of England. Reaching a height of 350 feet (110m) the sheer face of the cliffs is truly an unforgettable sight to see in person.

While here you can stroll along the coastline and admire the stunning vista and flowers, birds, and butterflies that inhabit the area. You may wish to explore the Fan Bay Deep Shelter which is an underground tunnel complex built in 1940 and linked to the gun battery located above to protect England’s coast during WW2.

Dover Castle

Dover Castle

With a history dating back to the 11th century, Dover Castle has a unique significance in British history. Over the centuries the Castle was given the name “The keys to England ” such was its importance throughout history, from the era of the Roman invasion, through Saxon and Napoleonic times, all the way up to its current standing.

England’s largest military castle, Dover Castle played a key role in the defense of England in both World War 1 and 2. On your private guided tour, you can explore the wartime tunnels including a visit to those from where the evacuation of Dunkirk was commanded.

Canterbury Cathedral

Altar and arched ceiling of Canterbury Cathedral.

Your driver guide will deliver you to the historic town center in Canterbury as you explore the centennial walls and cobbled streets.

Your first destination in Canterbury will be a guided tour around the gorgeous Gothic architecture and stunning stained glass windows of Canterbury Cathedral, a pilgrimage site since the middle ages and known as the mother church of the Anglican Communion worldwide.

Church of St Martin & ruins of St Augustine’s Abbey

Believed to be the oldest church in the English-speaking world, St Martins Church has a history dating back to 600AD. On your tour, you will be able to see where different sections of stone have been cut back to reveal Roman, Saxon, and Medieval influences throughout the centuries.

The ruins of a Saxon church constructed in 597 AD, St Augustine’s Abbey was used as the burial ground for Anglo-Saxon kings of Kent. Currently, you can immerse yourself in a virtual reality experience where you can don the headset to feel how things would have looked to visitors back in the 16th Century!

Day 4: Windsor Castle private tour & Hampton Court day trip

Today you will visit 2 of the most popular Royal sites in the UK as your driver-guide collects you from your London accommodation and delivers you to Windsor Castle and Hampton court for your guided tour experiences.

Your chauffeur will be a qualified local expert, so the tales of royal scandal and intrigue can begin straight away as you set off on the 50-minute drive from London to Windsor Castle.

Windsor Castle Tour

people walking up to the gates of windsor castle to start their tour.

Windsor Castle is one of the most beloved sites in all of the UK and the private residence of the Queen and where the Monarch is known to spend most of her weekends.

Our private tour allows you to explore the Castle’s grand State Apartments, where the Queen hosts Heads of State on official visits, ceremonies take place, and honors are awarded.

The State Apartments can also be considered works of art in themselves, gilded as they are with artwork from the Royal Collections, including paintings by Rembrandt and Rubens.

St George’s Chapel Tour

Inside Windsor Castle, your guide will deliver you to St George’s Chapel.

You will likely be familiar with images from the inside of the chapel, even if this is your first time ever visiting England! This is because images from the many Royal Weddings that have taken place here have been beamed all over the planet. One of the most recent beings between Prince Harry and Meghan Markle before they stepped down from their roles as Senior Royals.

Hampton Court Private Tour

Hampton Court Palace, England

Once the home of King Henry VIII, your guide will take you to explore both the Tudor palace and the Baroque palace of William III at Hampton Court.

Henry the 8th and the Tudors were known for their extravagance, and on your private tour of Hampton Court this will be on full display as you visit:

  • The huge Tudor Kitchens where luxurious feasts were prepared
  • The Great Hall: As you may imagine they are draped with fantastically intricate and storied tapestries, and served as the location of many magnificent Tudor feasts – which created some fabulous tales that your guide will reveal to you.
  • See and hear the story of the wives of Henry the 8th, including the tales of Anne Boleyn and Catherine of Aragon
  • The Chapel Royal, where Henry VIII was married… on several occasions!
  • The Apartments of King William the 2nd provide valuable insight into court life centuries ago.
  • The 16th Century Astronomical clock

It is also worth saying that Hampton Court Palace is a fantastic, fun venue for all the family with actors and performers, a maze, playground, great exhibits, and some of the finest gardens in the country, and we can schedule as much time to dedicate to each of these activities as you desire.

Day 5: Full-day tour of the Cotswolds

village houses in Cotswolds.

When you think of quintessentially English village life – the image in your mind is likely directly from the Cotswolds. Fields of Lavender in full bloom, stoic medieval castles, country houses, and villages populated with golden honey-hued stone architecture and thatched roofs. Entering the Cotswolds is truly like the words of a Rudyard Kipling poem have come to life.

Your driver-guide will collect you from your central London accommodation as you begin the 2-hour drive to your first destination in Burford, one of the most picturesque medieval towns in all of England.

Known as the Gateway to the Cotswolds, Burford is lined with medieval buildings many over 500 years old. Stroll down the old high street towards the River Windrush and visit the Church of St John the Baptist before enjoying a classic English-style lunch and tea in Burford House.

Your next stop is the village of Bibury, once described by the poet William Morris as “The most beautiful village in England”. Highlights here include Arlington Row and the famous old weaver’s cottages that date back to 1380 and have become one of the most photographed areas in Britain. You will also want to visit St Mary’s Church with its gorgeous Norman-era arches, 13th-century entrance, and Saxon chancel columns.

Your driver will then take you to the “Venice of the Cotswolds”, the riverside town of Bourton-on-the-water. Here you can take the time to admire the small stone cottages and bridges before arriving at your final destination of the day, Stow-on-the-Wald. After enjoying the boutique antique stores we will book you in for a traditional English meal with fresh local produce before you rejoin your driver guide to embark on the journey back to London for the evening.

What people love about England And Scotland Tours

I usually travel individually, but I'm very happy to have joined this tour. I would have never seen and experienced so much in such a short time on my own and certainly wouldn't have discovered some of the spots. The tour was the perfect mix of history, legends, short hikes, city and picturesque landscape. Thanks to our guide and driver Rich, you not only quickly build up a personal relationship with the country and its people, you also hear great (personal) stories, gain knowledge and have a laugh. Rich, you are a marvellous storyteller! Not to forget that thanks to his numerous tips we enjoyed wonderful food every day (for every budget) and an unforgettable evening in the pub! Thanks to him, everyone was in a great mood, open-minded and the very diverse group grew together quickly, so that on day 2 you already have the feeling of a road trip with friends. I couldn't have wished for more, happy to do it again!
My husband and I had the most amazing time on this trip through Scotland! Couldn’t have asked for a better tour director than Mike and bus driver Mark.
Because my original trip was cancelled by Trafalgar to rearrange a new tour was difficult I am giving a little more tolerance as the tourist industry was smashed my amended timetable cost me a lot of money The trip if your a new first trip bus tour user it’s ok far to rushed for us experienced lots 1 hour walk around s. LONDON (AP) — Britain’s lawmakers left Parliament on Friday for the last time before an election is held in six weeks. Some will never return. About 120 of the 650 members of Parliament are stepping down, and they and those who lose their seats on July 4 face an abrupt readjustment to life outside politics.

After a flurry of last-minute legislation, Parliament was prorogued, or formally suspended, in a ceremony featuring hat-doffing, lords in ermine-trimmed robes and commands in Norman French.

Prime Minister Rishi Sunak’s surprise decision to call a summer election with his Conservatives trailing in opinion polls means that some key pieces of legislation had to be abandoned -– including his flagship plan to ban tobacco sales to future generations.

WHAT’S HAPPENING ON THE CAMPAIGN TRAIL?

On the second full day of campaigning, Sunak and his main opponent, Labour Party leader Keir Starmer , have already covered hundreds of miles (kilometers) crisscrossing the U.K. on carefully stage-managed visits to businesses and communities. Sunak visited Northern Ireland —- making a stop at the Belfast shipyard where the doomed Titanic was built — and central England on Friday, while Starmer was in Scotland and northwest England.

Labour is the strong favorite to win the election after moving from the left toward the political center under Starmer, its leader since 2020.

The party got a reminder of its recent past on Friday, when Starmer’s predecessor, Jeremy Corbyn , said he would run for Parliament as an independent against Labour’s candidate. Starmer suspended Corbyn and barred him from running again for Labour after the former leader accused opponents of exaggerating the problem of antisemitism in the party.

Starmer apologized for antisemitism, a move welcomed by many Jewish Labour members and others. But supporters of Corbyn said he was being smeared because of his longtime support for the Palestinian cause.

Labour on Friday chose local councilor Praful Nargund to run in the inner-London seat of Islington North, which Corbyn has represented since 1983.

“I am here to represent the people of Islington North on exactly the same principles that I’ve stood by my whole life: social justice, human rights and peace,” Corbyn said.

The list of lawmakers who are quitting Parliament grew to almost 120, an unusually high number — two-thirds of them Conservatives. They include former Prime Minister Theresa May and senior minister Michael Gove, who has been at the heart of the Conservative government for a decade and announced his departure on Friday.

“There comes a moment when you know that it is time to leave,” Gove said in a resignation letter.

HOW WAS PARLIAMENT PROROGUED?

Parliament broke up for the election with a tradition-steeped ceremony in which lawmakers from the House of Commons were summoned to the House of Lords in the name of King Charles III by an official known as Black Rod. That was followed by a round of bowing and cap-doffing, before a message was read out from King Charles II and the title of each bill being passed was pronounced with a cry of “le roy le veult” — “the king wills it” in Norman French.

Parliament will not sit again until after the election, when 650 new members of Parliament will be sworn in.

The new government, whether Labour or Conservative, is due to announce its legislative program at another occasion of pomp and ceremony, the State Opening of Parliament, on July 17.

WHAT LEGISLATION WAS PASSED FIRST?

There was a last-day-of-school feeling in Parliament on Friday. Lawmakers hugged one another goodbye, and a few brought young children for a tour of Parliament’s grand but crumbling buildings.

Members of the House of Commons and the House of Lords scurried to pass final pieces of legislation before the shut-down — a process known as “washing up.”

One of the most significant was a law that quashes the convictions of hundreds of Post Office branch managers who were prosecuted for theft or fraud because a faulty computer system known as Horizon showed money was missing. The prosecutions and yearslong cover-up by Post Office bosses has been called one of the biggest miscarriages of justice in U.K. history.

Victims of a tainted blood scandal in which thousands of people were infected with HIV and hepatitis by contaminated blood products in the 1970s and ‘80s will get compensation after the Victims and Prisoners Bill is passed by Parliament.

A law overhauling property law in England and Wales, giving more rights to people who own leasehold properties — where the building’s freehold is owned by someone else — also made it onto the statute books.

WHAT BILLS FAILED?

One of Sunak’s flagship policies — a plan to create a “smoke-free generation” by banning the sale of tobacco products to anyone born after 2008 — is among the bills that ran out of time.

The prime minister said he was “disappointed not to be able to get that through at the end of the session,” but nonetheless said the policy was “evidence of the bold action that I’m prepared to take.”

The smoking ban could be reintroduced by the new government if the Conservatives win the election. Labour supports the idea in principle and could also introduce a similar bill if it wins power.

A law that would ban landlords from evicting tenants without giving a reason also fell by the wayside.

Rolling Stones at MetLife Stadium review: Jagger, Richards have time on their side

3 minute read.

tour of britain day 5

The Rolling Stones sure know how to throw a Jersey Memorial Day weekend party.

Jokes, topical chatter, Jersey diner menu talk and nearly two hours of some of the greatest songs in rock ‘n’ roll were on stage May 23 at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford.

The Stones — whose members Mick Jagger and Keith Richards are both 80 — have found that sweet spot where they don’t seem to take themselves too seriously yet still remain a dangerous force of music. Back-to-back renditions of “Paint it Black” and “Gimme Shelter” rang throughout MetLife with an ominous beauty. It was glorious and a bit chilling.

Chanelle Haynes, who's making her Rolling Stones live debut on this tour, absolutely sizzled on the female lead for "Gimme Shelter."

The band grew stronger as the night went on. Jagger made a 50-yard dash from the stage catwalk to the drum kit during “Honky Tonk Women” and didn’t seem to lose a breath.

Need a break? Play the USA TODAY Daily Crossword Puzzle.

There was a Richards surprise on Thursday. He performed two songs, "You Got the Silver" and "Little T&A," instead of his usual single spotlight.

"This next one I haven't the faintest idea what it's about, but I wrote it," said Richards of "Little T&A."

Richards also delivered a crunchy rock star guitar riff during “Jumpin’ Jack Flash,” and gave the audience a knowing glance and wink while bassist Daryl Jones gave him a gap-toothed smile.

Speaking of Jones, he was extraordinary on an extended version of "Miss You" with a multi-dimensional bass solo that delivered on multiple levels. Jagger was so taken he gave him a chest bump midway through.

Jagger also tailored the lyrics for the crowd, changing the "Puerto Rican girls" line to "Argentina girls" for a young lady with an Argentina flag toward the front of the audience.

Drummer Steve Jordan, who has replaced the late Charlie Watts, is a master of understated beat keeping and pocket refinement. It's so note perfect that it's exceptional. Ronnie Wood adds personality and bite to the lineup.

The new songs from the latest album, “Hackney Diamonds,” stood up quite well to the classics. “Angry,” is, well, angry, and has an arena rock riff. “Sweet Sounds of Heaven” lifted the sky with a gospel rock buoyancy.

The guys are up on current affairs happening in the area, including the trial of former President Donald Trump in New York City for campaign fraud.

“I was a bit worried about he weather tonight,” Jagger said. “I thought we were going to get a Stormy Daniels but we’re all right.”

The last time the Stones played MetLife, Jagger referenced eating at the Tick Tock Diner on Route 3 in Clinton .

“It’s great to be back in New Jersey!” Jagger said after “You Can't Always Get What You Want.”

“Last time I mentioned that we had been to this diner, the Tick Tock Diner," Jagger continued. "So on the way to the show I stopped in there I found out they got a new sandwich and it’s called The Mick Jagger. I’ve never had a (blanking) sandwich named after me. I’m very, very proud.”

The Mick Jagger sandwich has pork roll, egg and cheese on it. Jagger can be a bit of a ham. He also, as the song says, moves like Jagger, with his hips swiveling, his fingers pointing into the air, arms flaying over the audience — offering a rock 'n' roll benediction to those who have been to the dark side and back.

“Hackney Diamonds” is the Stones' first LP in 18 years. The tour began April 28 at NRG Stadium in Houston, and will play 17 cities through the tour finale July 21 at the Thunder Ridge Nature Arena in Ridgedale, Missouri.

The Missouri concert was just added to the tour on May 23.

Next up is Sunday, May 26, at MetLife. Lawrence is the opener, and resale ticket prices begin at $92 via Ticketmaster .

Opener Jon Batiste took the stage with blinding flash and panache in a sequined jacket and pants to match.

“Are you ready to rock!” Batiste exclaimed as he strutted down the stage catwalk as he and his band performed “Tell the Truth.”

The multi-instrumentalist was fully kinetic and constantly in motion playing his musical melange of funk, soul, rock and gospel — even if the early Stones crowd didn’t match the enthusiasm.

“When I move my body like this I feel freedom,” Batiste said.

The New Orleans native had the answer: a sing-along on a medley that began with the soul gospel classic “People Get Ready.”

Up went the phone lights in the stadium, lighting the way.

Fleet Week sails into NYC with 2024 Parade of Ships. Watch extended video from Chopper 2 overhead

By Renee Anderson

Updated on: May 23, 2024 / 4:55 AM EDT / CBS New York

NEW YORK --  Fleet Week started Wednesday in New York City, kicking off with the 2024 Parade of Ships.

We have everything to know about how to watch the parade of ships  and   what else is happening this week .

When is Fleet Week 2024 in NYC?

Fleet Week starts on May 22 and ends May 28, the day after Memorial Day. This is the 36th annual celebration in the city, and the theme is "Fleet Week New York...Celebrating Those Who Serve."

It's a chance for people to meet U.S. Sailors, Marines and Coast Guardsmen and check out the latest military technology.

"Fleet Week is about celebrating those who serve and recognizing the unyielding strength of our Navy, Marine Corps, and Coast Guard team," Commander Navy Region Mid-Atlantic Rear Adm. Wesley McCall said in a statement. "As we come together to pay tribute to those who made the ultimate sacrifice during their service, we are reminded of the diverse and inclusive fighting force that is currently serving to protect national security and preserve our way of life. Our service members are excited for the opportunity to engage with the community and create lasting connections with the people of New York during this time-honored tradition."

Nearly 2,3000 service members are expected to participate this year, taking in the sights of New York City while taking part in ship tours, band concerts and other events.

How to watch the NYC Fleet Week Parade of Ships

CBS New York's John Elliott was live  with the U.S. Coast Guard on the water  for the Parade of Ships, and Tony Sadiku was  joined by the U.S. Navy Band at Pier 88 . Chopper 2 also flew overhead for a birds-eye-view of the procession.

What time did the Parade of Ships start?

Fleet Week kicks off with the Parade of Ships on Wednesday, May 22. The exact timing isn't released ahead of time, but last year's procession started around 8:45 a.m. and ended around 11 a.m.

Eight military vessels sailed into New York Harbor and then up the Hudson River. The voyage traveled past the Statue of Liberty and Battery Park in Lower Manhattan, then past Hudson River Park on the West Side, cruising by the Intrepid Sea, Air & Space Museum at Pier 86, before wrapping up just below the George Washington Bridge.

List of ships participating in NYC Fleet Week

  • USS Bataan from Norfolk, Virginia:  The USS Bataan (LHD 5), known as the "Big 5," is named in honor of the American and Filipino troops who fought on the Bataan Peninsula during World War II. Cara Delevingne's childhood home is up for sale - but it's come to market with a huge £23.5m price tag.

The 5,456 sq ft property in London's Belgravia was also home to controversial casino and zoo owner John Aspinall in the 1960s.

Mr Aspinall and the mansion were also linked to the disappearance of Lord Lucan in 1974 - a mystery that still hasn't been solved.

After he died in 2000, the five-bedroom house was bought by Charles and Pandora Delevingne - the parents of supermodel Cara and her older sisters Chloe and Poppy.

The Grade II-listed building on Lyall Street comes with two reception rooms, a study, a home cinema and a professional chef's kitchen.

A gym, sauna, steam room and rooftop cocktail bar are also included.

In around 2014, with their daughters grown up, the Delevingnes moved from the Lyall Street mansion and downsized.

The current owners bought the house a couple of years later and have given the mansion an extensive renovation and modernisation.

"It is one of the best houses currently available for sale in Belgravia and is immaculately presented and beautifully interior designed," said Charles Lloyd, head of Beauchamp Estates.

The reason for the fall in the household energy price cap is pretty straightforward - wholesale electricity and gas prices have fallen since the price cap was last set in February this year.

Wholesale gas and electricity prices make up by far the biggest proportion of the energy bills - £720 of the current £1,690 - and Ofgem is assuming, for July, August and September, a wholesale electricity price of 22.36 pence per kilowatt hour (kWh), down from 24.50 pence per kWh during the current quarter.

It is also assuming a wholesale gas price of 5.48 pence per kWh from July to September, down from 6.04 pence per kWh during the current quarter.

That brings down the wholesale energy component of the typical bill (which is based on an assumption that a household will use 12,000 kWh per year of gas and 2,900 kWh of electricity) from £720 to £619.

The question some people may have, though, is why the energy price cap that Ofgem has set for the three months from July remains higher, at £1,568, than the level at which it was set - £1,277 - at the time the energy crisis was sparked by Russia's invasion of Ukraine.

At first blush, this seems a reasonable enough question, given that a barrel of Brent Crude - a reasonable enough proxy for wholesale energy prices - stands today at $80.78 (£63.50) per barrel, down from the heights it hit after the invasion.

But bear in mind that, in those days, the price cap was only set by Ofgem every six months, rather than quarterly as at present.

The price cap in place immediately before the crisis came into effect on 1 October 2021 having been set on 6 August that year.

Prior to that, wholesale energy prices had been lower than they are now. The wholesale energy component for the price cap for the winter of 2021/22 was, accordingly, £528 - lower than the £619 it will be from July.

Other costs taken into account by Ofgem are also higher now than they were before Russia invaded Ukraine.

The UK needs "longer term solutions" on energy prices because they are still "record high almost", Sir Keir Starmer has said.

The Labour leader was commenting on a fall in the energy price cap.

From 1 July it will be £1,568 a year - a drop of £122 from the previous quarter.

But Sir Keir said many people were still struggling to make ends meet.

"Everywhere I go, so many people tell me the cost of living is still bearing down on them," he told Sky News.

"People on a mortgage, [those] coming off a fixed mortgage, know their mortgages are going up by hundreds of pounds.

"Everybody knows prices are still going up - energy prices are still record high almost."

He added: "We need longer term solutions."

Labour's proposed Great British Energy (GBE) would help energy prices "come down for good", Sir Keir claimed.

Asked when energy prices would drop under GBE, and how quickly it could be established, he said: "Certainly by the end of the parliament, and a lot sooner than that.

"We can set up Great British Energy pretty quickly."

Discussions are already under way with potential partners, he added.

Claire Coutinho, the energy secretary, told Sky News that Great British Energy is a "complete gimmick" and a "drop in the ocean".

She also accused Labour of having "no plan" on energy security.

Putting off "life admin" could be costing you thousands of pounds a year, research has suggested.

It is estimated that adults in the UK could save £300 a year by cancelling unused subscriptions, £420 by reviewing their day-to-day finances, and £372 by re-evaluating a gym membership.

"On average, Brits admit to putting off simple tasks by four to six months," Lloyds Bank said.

When asked why they had been delaying, almost a fifth (18%) said there was no deadline, one in seven (16%) said it was easier to take no action, while for 13% the memory of previous difficulties was off-putting.

Turning to the future, a fifth (20%) admitted not having a pension, while only two fifths (42%) knew how to add more money to their pension if they had one.

If you are looking for a detailed analysis of today's cut in the energy price cap (see our breaking news post from 7am) then the following from Martin Lewis is worth digesting.

The founder of Money Saving Expert has split his reaction into three sections.

Lewis says the cap will drop on 1 July by an average of 7.2% for Direct Debit customers, 6.9% for prepay customers, and 7.1% for those who pay when they get a bill.

The cap will fall to £1,568 a year - a drop of £122 from the previous quarter.

Standing charges (what you pay regardless of how much energy you use) "remain high" and are "virtually unchanged", Lewis says.

"All the cut" is via unit rates, he adds.

That means those who use more energy will be seeing bigger savings.

The electricity unit rate for Direct Debit customers from July will be 22.36p/kwH - down 9% from 24.5p, Lewis says.

The electricity standing charge will be 60.12p a day - up from 60.1p.

The gas unit rate will be 5.48p/kwH - down 9% from 6.04p.

And the gas standing charge will be 31.41p - slightly down from 31.43p.

Lewis says the results of a consultation on standing charges are likely to be published sometime in the "summer", adding: "Whenever that is."

As we reported in our post at 7.34am, respected market researcher Cornwall Insight is predicting that bills are likely to rise once more in the run-up to winter.

Lewis comments: "If they're right this is the last fall, and the coming rises are big.

"On 1 July it's confirmed [the cap] drops 7%, so for every £100 paid today you pay £93.

"Then on 1 Oct it's predicted to rise 12%, so you'll go back up and be paying £104.

"Then on 1 Jan the crystal ball is saying it'll stay flat (at £104).

"All this makes the cheapest fixes, which are currently 9% cheaper than now (so £91 per £100 on the price cap), look a decent bet."

Thousands of darts fans packed out the O2 last night as Luke Littler was crowned champion in the Premier League Darts final.

While his victory was met with big celebrations, the price of a pint left many upset.

Tom Park shared a photo of the menu on X which showed a pint of Camden Hells Lager cost £9.50.

A Budweiser came in at £8.95 - and it was the same for a Stella Artois.

Other social media uses responded to his post in shock.

Here are some of the replies we saw:

  • "That's absolutely disgraceful."
  • "Bloody hell! That's a joke."
  • "We get so ripped off in this country."
  • "£9.50 for a pint of Camden Hells in f****** robbery."

Two pint offers didn't seem to be any better, with the menu showing the deal just worked out the same as buying two normal pints.

The Money team has contacted the O2 for comment.

We've spoken a lot about shoplifting, with offences rising to their highest level in 20 years across England and Wales earlier this year.

But here are two culprits we didn't expect to see...

A pair of Labradors stealing a loaf of bread from a petrol station in Herefordshire.

They were captured on CCTV walking down an aisle and picking goods off the shelves before wandering out.

After the dogs were caught in the act, workers put out an appeal online and reunited them with their owner.

Don't worry, the petrol station hasn't pursued charges.

It can be hard to balance the demands of eating well without spending a lot.

In this series, we try to find the healthiest options in the supermarket for the best value - and have enlisted the help of  Sunna Van Kampen , founder of Tonic Health, who went viral on social media for reviewing food in the search of healthier choices.

In this series we don't try to find the outright healthiest option, but help you get better nutritional value for as little money as possible.

Today we're looking at biscuits.

"When some brands are up to two teaspoons of sugar per biscuit (and we all know you aren't having just one), then we need to look or substitutes or find ways to biscuit smarter for your health," Sunna says.

The typical biscuit breakdown on average for market leading brands by type:

Freshly baked cookies: 40% sugar or 27g per 66g cookie

"That's over six teaspoons of sugar - they're also generally the biggest biscuit on the shelf by some distance, so potentially a good choice to avoid," Sunna says.

Chocolate chip cookies: 34% sugar or 8.6g per 25g cookie

"That's the equivalent of over two teaspoons of sugar - delicious but there are better options."

Chocolate digestives: 28% sugar or 4.8g per 16.7g biscuit

"That's a teaspoon per biscuit and I'm definitely not just eating one."

Shortbread: 17% sugar or 2.6g per shortbread

"Almost half the sugar of a chocolate digestive."

Digestive biscuits: 15% sugar or 2.2g per 15g biscuit

"These are starting to look a lot healthier as we are only talking half a teaspoon per biscuit."

Rich tea biscuits: 18% sugar or 1.5g per 8.3g biscuit.

"This one's a bit healthier due to the size, but the best choice is Rich Tea's own 30% less sugar variety.

"That sits at 12% sugar (or just 1.1g per biscuit) - only a quarter of a teaspoon of sugar per biscuit."

The verdict

The Rich Tea Light biscuit is hard to beat in Sunna's mind.

"Its low sugar content make it a winner for health-conscious tea drinkers," he says.

"If you eat just four biscuits a week, swapping from chocolate chip cookies to Rich Tea Light could save you over 1.5kg of sugar per year from your diet.

"Small changes make a big impact," Sunna says.

Digestive biscuits are also a solid choice, especially if you prefer a bit more substance with your tea.

"For those moments when only chocolate will do, chocolate digestives are the best option, although they have a higher sugar content," he adds.

Naturally, he urges biscuit-lovers to stay away from fresh-baked cookies and chocolate chip due to the high sugar levels.

If you're looking to save money, own-brand biscuits from major supermarkets often offer comparable taste at 30-50% discount on average.

"For example, Tesco's Rich Tea biscuits are just £0.65 per pack or £0.22 per 100g compared with McVities Rich Tea at £0.47 per 100g.

Here's a handy comparison;

  • Supermarket Baked Cookies - £0.68 per 100g
  • Fox’s Milk Chocolate Chip Cookies - £1.14 per 100g
  • McVities Chocolate Digestives - £0.50 per 100g
  • Patterson’s Shortbread - £0.45 per 100g
  • McVities Digestives - £0.42 per 100g
  • McVities Rich Tea - £0.47 per 100g
  • McVities Rich Tea Light - £0.60 per 100g

The nutritionist's view - by Dr Emily Prpa, nutritionist and science manager at Yakult .

"It's no secret that Brits love biscuits, with a staggering 27 million UK households buying them every year.

"A little of what you love is not a bad thing, but really it's all about moderation and making some positive swaps.

"For example, consider opting for biscuits that are made with wholemeal flour or whole grains such as oats.

"Those which contain dried fruits and nuts can provide more fibre than other biscuits to help you meet the NHS-recommended 30g of fibre per day for adults.

"The majority of your fibre needs to be obtained through other wholegrain sources of pasta and bread, as well as vegetables, fruits, legumes, nuts and seeds.

"Fibre aids digestion, helps to regulate bowel movements and is a food source for one's gut bacteria, contributing to a healthy and diverse gut microbiome."

It was already going to be a big week of economic announcements before Rishi Sunak called a general election: April inflation came down - though less than expected - as did retail sales and, from July, so too will the energy price cap.

At the same time, we learned government borrowing in April was the fourth-highest on record and consumer confidence was that bit better than a month earlier.

Sterling has come down from the highs reached after inflation data came out - £1 buys £1.27, pretty much back where we started the week. Against the euro, sterling held gains, with a pound equal to €1.1731, up from a €1.1671 low on the Monday open.

The oil price ticked down throughout the week and is now at $81.04 a barrel - down from $84 on Monday, which was already lower than all of April and most of March. It's good news for motorists and should impact prices at the pumps in about 10 days.

On the stock market front, the FTSE 100 index of the most valuable companies on the London Stock Exchange is down 1.5747% since the week.

There is almost zero chance of a cut in interest rates next month, a senior economist has said.

Michael Saunders, an adviser at Oxford Economics and a former member of the Bank of England's Monetary Policy Committee (MPC), said Wednesday's higher than expected inflation figures made it very unlikely.

The rate of price rises dropped to 2.3% in April - but economists had been predicting 2.1% .

The general election, called for 4 July, also makes an interest rate cut unlikely, Mr Saunders said.

"They themselves [the MPC] wouldn't want to be a cause of volatility," he told Bloomberg.

"The MPC would be especially reluctant to do a surprise rate change during an election campaign.

"But, in practice, a June rate cut is already ruled out by inflation figures."

The first rate cut is likely to come in August, Mr Saunders said.

He added: "I do think over the course of the year, markets may now be slightly under-pricing the extent to which interest rates come down.

"I would still say [there will be] three rate cuts - the first one not until August, and then a couple more later in the year."

Giro d'Italia stage 19 Live - A big chance for the breakaway

Tour of britain: wout van aert wins opening stage.

Belgian champion triumphs in uphill sprint in Bodmin

Wout van Aert (Jumbo-Visma) won the first stage of the Tour of Britain , and took the overall race lead, proving to be the strongest in a reduced bunch sprint.

Positioning was crucial given the speed of the final kilometre, and Van Aert was well-placed entering the short, steep ramp up to the finish.

Though Julian Alaphilippe (Deceuninck-Quickstep) launched a trademark attack with 600m to go, he could not escape the marauding bunch and Van Aert leapfrogged him in the sprint to take the win.

Nils Eekhoff (Team DSM) tracked Van Aert but wasn't able to get close and had to settle for second, while Gonzalo Serrano (Movistar) claimed the final podium spot.

Ethan Hayter (Ineos Grenadiers) trailed them to finish fourth, and there was a two-second gap to the next batch of riders, which included Alaphilippe, Giacomo Nizzolo (Qhubeka-NextHash), and Michael Woods (Israel Start-Up Nation).

With 10 bonus seconds for the stage win, Van Aert pulls on the first navy leader's jersey with a gap of four seconds over Eekhoff, six over Serrano, 10 over Hayter, and 12 over the Alaphilippe group.

How it unfolded

Through narrow roads and a thick Cornish drizzle, flanked by steep, grass banks and the huge crowds that appear whenever bike-racing comes to Britain, the race traversed the 180km from Penzance to Bodmin.

Despite a relatively fast neutral zone that strung out the peloton from the start, a five-man breakaway escaped, composed of Joey Rosskopf (Rally Cycling), Oliver Stockwell (Great Britain), Max Walker (TRINITY Racing) and the last two winners of the mountains classification- Jacob Scott (Canyon dhb SunGod) and Nic Dlamini (Team Qhubeka NextHash).

Content with this configuration, the WorldTour teams blocked the road and the familiar shapes of Tony Martin (Jumbo-Visma) and Tim Declercq (Deceuninck-Quickstep) surfaced from the depths of the peloton to control the race, allowing the breakaway a meagre three minutes lead.

During their time out front, the breakaway contested the intermediate sprints and mountain points scattered across the jagged Cornish landscape, and Scott emerged victorious in both these competitions. He took the win on Zennor Hill, the first climb of the day, and, while Dlamini recovered from a dropped chain on this climb to take maximum mountain points at the second and third opportunities to do so, this was not enough to displace Scott. Scott won both intermediate sprints as well, to complete his near-perfect day out.

Soon after the final classified climb, the leading quintet became a trio as Rosskopf punctured and Dlamini looked to conserve energy for later in the week. Both were reabsorbed by the peloton 35 kilometres from the finish while their breakaway companions survived another ten kilometres before they too were caught.

On the approach to Bodmin, the WorldTour teams fought for control of the peloton, each deploying their star names as domestiques. André Greipel (Israel Start-Up Nation), Mark Cavendish (Deceuninck-Quickstep), Richie Porte (Ineos-Grenadiers) and Marc Soler (Movistar Team) in turn sat on the front of the race.

Deceuninck-Quickstep led the peloton into the town and, at the point where the road reared upwards in the final 500m, Alaphilippe attacked, though it was ultimately fruitless as Van Aert hunted him down to take the stage win.

In the end, such was van Aert’s dominance, he was able to turn his head in the closing metres, and he crossed the line nonchalantly while, a bike length behind him, Eekhoff and Serrano gasped for air.

Thanks for contacting us. We've received your submission.

Keeping up with the Costners.

Kevin Costner brought five of his seven children to the Cannes Film Festival and joked that he needed a “tour director” to keep them in line.

“I wanted them to see me work. I got them tuxedos, I got them dresses,” the actor, 69, said during a “Jimmy Kimmel Live!” appearance Tuesday.

Kevin Costner and kids

However, he recalled, “The minute they got there, my two sons went fishing. … My three daughters ended up on a boat, and said they’d see me around three or four o’clock … and then I get a call and they were drinking drinks at this point, so they cruised in about eight.

“I said, ‘We came to France to be as a family.’ They go, ‘It’s working great dad. What do we do next?'” the “Yellowstone” alum continued. “I said, ‘I don’t know. We need a tour director to figure that out.'”

Annie, 40, Lily, 37, Cayden, 17, Hayes, 15, and Grace, 13, accompanied Costner on the France trip, making a rare red carpet appearance on Sunday to promote “Horizon: An American Saga.”

The Oscar winner’s family members were also present as he received the Order of Arts and Letters from the Minister of Culture the following day.

Costner’s eldest two sons, Joe, 36, and Liam, 26 — whom he shares with Cindy Silva and Bridget Rooney, respectively — did not make the trip.

Notably, Hayes has a role the film, which Costner raved about in Tuesday’s interview.

“He didn’t have to audition,” he joked. “I know these parts are so important in people’s career, so I don’t just hand them out like candy.”

The director also clarified that he did not “f–king cry” during the movie’s 11-minute standing ovation.

He did tell GQ on Monday that making the four-part movie was difficult during his divorce from Christine Baumgartner .

Costner felt “broken” on a “daily basis,” he admitted to the outlet.

“I’ve taken big bites out of life, life’s taken big ones out of me,” the Golden Globe winner added. “I’m not going to lose myself because I’ve been bruised. I have been, but I’m not going to lose myself.”

The former couple settled their divorce in February, nearly one year after calling it quits .
