The 2007-built Liberty of the Seas cruise ship is the second Freedom-class Royal Caribbean liner, with sisterships Freedom OTS and Independence OTS .

The vessel (IMO number 9330032) is currently Bahamas- flagged (MMSI 309436000) and registered in Nassau .

History - construction and ownership

Royal Caribbean International (RCI) is a US passenger shipping company, trademarked travel brand, and subsidiary owned by Royal Caribbean Group (RCG/shipowner). RCI was established in 1968 and currently has over 1/5 of the worldwide cruise market. RCI also has RCG's largest fleet by both vessel number and GT tonnage (ship sizes and capacities).

All RCI liners have names ending with "of the Seas".

Liberty Of The Seas cruise ship (Royal Caribbean)

The 4000-passenger ship Liberty OTS' first drydock was in 2011. During the refit, the boat gained new features (introduced on Oasis OTS ) including a large stage shows, Royal Nursery, an outdoor movie screen, a cupcake bakery. New technology know-how was placed in the form of interactive HDTVs and digital deck plan systems, located throughout the Liberty to help guests navigate by using LCD touch-screens for customized directions, ship factoids and real-time updates.

Liberty OTS also boasts all the Freedom-class favorites, including popular onshore brands like Johnny Rockets and Ben and Jerry's, cruising's only ice rink, a rock-climbing wall, the novel "Promenade" concept and Boleros Latin lounge.

At the beginning of 2016 Royal Caribbean's cruise ship, Liberty of the Seas has undergone an extensive drydock revitalization. Get a behind-the-scenes look at the new features to be constructed, such as the Splashaway Bay waterpark, The Perfect Storm water slides, new restaurants and bar dining options.

Liberty Of The Seas Wiki

Liberty OTS is fleet's 2nd Freedom-Class liner, with sisterships Freedom  and  Independence . Liberty was built in 2007 by Aker Finnyards Shipyard (Turku, Finland). This shipyard was later acquired by STX Europe (a subsidiary of the South Korean multinational STX Corporation). Ship's godmother was Donnalea Madeley. She was elected from about 2500 female travel agents, who had shown fondness of social causes. Donnalea Madeley is from Ontario, and the first travel agent to win such a position (usually given to VIPs). The christening ceremony was held at PortMiami  on May 18, 2007.

The inaugural cruise (maiden voyage) was a 7-day Caribbean itinerary starting on May 19. Liberty OTS had some special pre-inaugural cruises before the liner arrived in Miami. The first was the Transatlantic crossing ( Southampton  to  NYC New ), the second - repositioning from NYC to Miami (visiting several US East Coast ports).

Like all newly refurbished RCI ships, Liberty offered the DreamWorks Experience (2011-2018). Liberty OTS is an "Art Nouveau'" decorated modern cruise liner. Passengers will be amazed by the mixing coloured light projections on broken or hanging canvasses created by the unique digital art celebrity Miguel Chevalier. All the rest is totally Royal Caribbean - the feature entertainment options with great shows, grand Vegas-style productions, the "ice-skating and rock-climbing", numerous themed bars and lounges, modern facilities to spend quality time on board.

Liberty OTS refurbishment 2016 review

During ship’s drydock 2016 refurbishment (January 10 - February 6), Royal Caribbean added a group of 3 waterslides on Deck 13 aft (near the Flowrider simulator). The Aqua Park (lido deck 11) has a new kids-only water playground area called “Splashaway Bay”.

Liberty OTS is the first Freedom-class RCI ship with waterslides. The first ever Royal Caribbean ship originally built with slides is  Harmony of the Seas  (launched 2016) with a total of 4 water slides.

The list of deck plan changes after the 2016 drydock refurbishment includes:

  • (On deck 2) 3 inside cabins were removed (numbers 2405, 2403, 2401).
  • (On deck 3) the Catacombs (218-seats Disco Nightclub, level 1) was replaced with 19 new interior cabins. Also here, 4 new interior cabins were added near the Art Gallery (starboard). Both lounges Bernini (portside) and Velasquez (starboard) were replaced with 10 new oceanview staterooms. Dining Room restaurant was renamed from Rembrandt to “Main Dining Room” (level 1).
  • (On deck 4) the Catacombs disco (level 2) was replaced by the Sabor Modern Mexican (restaurant). Also here, Dining Room restaurant was renamed from Michelangelo to “Main Dining Room” (level 2).
  • (On Promenade deck 5) the show lounge was renamed from “The Sphynx” to “Star Lounge”. Also here, the Champagne Bar (wine bar) was replaced by R-Bar. Dining Room restaurant was renamed from Botticelli to “Main Dining Room” (level 3). Cupcake Cupboard (bakery) was added.
  • (On deck 6) a new inside cabin was added forward (number 6137).
  • (On deck 7) 5 new inside cabins were added, 4 of which in the place of the Library (removed to deck 9).
  • (On deck 9) a new inside cabin was added forward (number 9237). Also here were added Library and Card Room, while the Concierge Club was removed.
  • (On Lido deck 11) the H2O Zone was replaced by the new Splashaway Bay (water park with slides). Also here, the Portofino restaurant was replaced by “Giovanni’s Table” (Italian restaurant).
  • (On Spa deck 12 forward) around the ShipShape Spa, new cabins were added in categories Q-Inside, Panoramic Oceanview (PF-Family Panoramic, P1-Larger, P2-Panoramic) and E2-Spa Balcony.
  • (On deck 13) Liberty Dunes (9-hole mini golf course with Golf Simulator) was replaced with the Perfect Storm waterslides (Cyclone, Typhoon). Also here, the Wipe Out! (20-seats burger bar) was replaced with the “Tidal Wave” slide (Boomerang-type). While the waterslide structure was ready after the ship’s refurbishment, its opening was re-scheduled for June 2016 due to some initial design flaws discovered after the slide’s installation. The design was altered by adding padding for the impact areas of the slide.
  • (On deck 14) both portside multipurpose rooms – Cloud Nine (24-seats) and Seven Hearts (33-seats) were replaced with Suite Lounge.
  • Internet speed was upgraded (to Voom).

During drydock 2016, a total of 89 new cruise cabins were added. Among those, 26 are Panoramic ocean views (with floor-ceiling windows facing forward) on deck 12.

Liberty Of The Seas refurbishment 2011 review

The list of deckplan changes after drydock 2011 included:

  • All cruise accommodations were renovated.
  • “DreamWorks Experience” (Walt Disney themed entertainment program) was implemented.
  • The Royal Caribbean’s signature Nursery was added on deck 12.
  • On Lido Deck 11 (in the main pool area) a huge movie screen (outdoor theatre) was installed.
  • Vintages (wine bar) was upgraded.
  • BRITTO Art Gallery was added on deck 3.

The Theatre Lounge's programming was upgraded with complimentary DreamWorks 3D movies and a new Broadway musical production (“Saturday Night Fever”).

Q: Let’s get started with your travel experience. How long have you been exploring the world with Royal Caribbean? And what do you do?  Joff : I’ve been a cruise director at Royal Caribbean for 15 years, working with an incredible team to ensure the entertainment and activities offered onboard our ships are top quality. In a sense, it’s my job to make sure our guests are having the best vacation ever!

Q: What’s your favorite part about what you do? Joff: It’s impossible to pick just one because my role is so varied. Watching the ambiance develop throughout the cruise is highly rewarding, and simultaneously, seeing, meeting and engaging so many guests is always a highlight.

Q: What’s your favorite thing about living and working at sea? Joff: Not having to cook !

Q: What’s the most common question you get when people find out you work on cruise ships? Joff: I’m often asked what my favorite destination is, and I have two answers: Sydney, and Villefranche (Nice) in the French Riviera—both of which we’re going to visit on the Ultimate World Cruise.

Q: What is the most memorable moment from your career so far?  Joff: Being asked to debut two ships— Anthem of the Seas in 2015 and Ovation of the Seas in 2016. It has always been a goal of mine to join the start-up team for a brand-new ship and I’m honored to have been part of that process twice!

katy cruise director liberty of the seas

Royal Caribbean offers a range of thrilling experiences everyone in the family can enjoy, like the RipCord® by iFLY® skydiving simulator.

Q: Do you have a favorite show? Joff: I’ll have to give you my top two: Grease and Tango Buenos Aires .

Pro tip : Once you’ve booked your cruise, you can pre-book seats for a show ahead of your sailing online .

Q: Where would you say is the best view on board? Joff: Anywhere outside at sunrise or sunset—though I tend to be around for more sunsets!

Q: What item do you always make sure you pack for a cruise?  Joff: Shoelaces. From walking from one end of the ship to another to scaling the rock wall and everything in between, you’ll be moving your feet quite a bit!

Pro tip : Hit the jogging track onboard your ship so you don’t have to miss your daily run while on vacation.

Q: How much time will you be on the Ultimate World Cruise ?  Joff: I’ll spend four months on board from Miami to Beijing, followed by three months from Istanbul and then back to Miami.

Q: What destination are you most looking forward to visiting?  Joff: Port Stanley , the southernmost city in South America. I’m a half-marathon runner and it would be a dream come true to run on the Falklands.

Q: What’s one reason Royal Caribbean is a great way to vacation? Joff: The passion and drive from the onboard teams to make every day of that vacation count!

With Royal Caribbean making stops in 24 Australian locations, you can see the magic of the Sydney Opera House come to life.

Q: And now for a quickfire round of “this or that” questions, starting with chill or thrill?   Joff: I’m going to have to pick both. Chill from midnight to 8 a.m., and thrill from 8 a.m. to midnight (except for lunch !)

Q: Night on land or sea ?   Joff : Sea.

Q: Chocolate chip or Ranger cookie?  Joff: Ranger.

Q: Coco Loco or The Lime & Coconut (from the Lime & Coconut Bar)? Joff: Lime & Coconut.

Entertainment & Activities

Liberty of the seas theater and shows.

Your main venue for prime evening entertainment is the 1,320-seat Platinum Theatre, located on decks 2, 3 and 4, forward. It's a venue with a majestic, Art Deco-throwback feel, from the cascading white marble stairs at the entrance to the 1920s design on the stage curtain and the gold-backed seats.

On most nights, there are two productions of the headliner show to accommodate for the early and late dinner seatings. The one show not to miss is the Cirque du Soleil-styled "In the Air," featuring the Royal Caribbean singers and dancers as they perform aerial feats with silks, swings and stunning costumes. The Broadway show “Saturday Night Fever” on Liberty of the Seas is also a passenger favorite, but the remaining Liberty of the Seas shows lack the level of pizazz of "In the Air," with a somewhat tepid lineup of comedians, singers, impersonators and jugglers.

Studio B (Deck 3, midship) is the secondary theater onboard, a much smaller venue that performs triple duty as the Liberty of the Seas ice-skating rink, movie theater and gathering venue. With a little more than half the seats of the Platinum Theatre, you do run the risk of missing the show if you don't arrive early to "Encore! An Ice Spectacular," the Liberty of the Seas ice show, which is performed twice two nights of the cruise. With a through-the-decades theme, this show is a crowd favorite.

Daily Things to Do on Liberty of the Seas

During the day, you'll find the most action going on near the midship all-ages pool (Deck 11), where a small poolside stage functions as the performance space for belly flop contests, line dancing classes and other games, plus occasionally a steel pan band. There's also a large movie screen here that shows films and TV clips throughout the day. Liberty of the Seas movies are generally well-known family-friendly flicks.

The Liberty of the Seas Royal Promenade on Deck 5 is another central gathering place. The shops here promote sales on various items during the week, with occasionally long lines of passengers waiting to purchase the hottest jewelry or discounted T-shirts and trinkets.

Trivia buffs will want to make the Schooner Bar (Deck 4) their home base, as there is usually trivia planned morning, afternoon and evening, plus the occasional family scavenger hunt or napkin-folding seminar.

Strap on a free pair of rental skates and make your way around the Liberty of the Seas ice rink in Studio B (Deck 3) for one of the 30-minute open ice-skating sessions throughout the afternoon.

At-sea art auctions (along with salesy seminars about collecting art) and a variety of spa seminars on losing weight or looking younger ("The Lips You Want, the Lines You Don't!") take up a sizable amount of real estate on the daily Cruise Compass and in the daily onboard announcements. Other Liberty of the Seas activities include dance classes and a range of workshops, which take place daily at different locations around the ship.

Liberty of the Seas at Night

A stroll through the ship in the evening is a trip through various musical genres, from Latin music or classical guitar to piano and country and western music throughout the ship's bars.

One of our favorite quiet activities in the evening was to visit the helipad on Deck 4, forward, to watch the stars and look for lights from other vessels.

The Battle of the Sexes game show and Karaoke Superstar competition are always big draws for adults at On Air (Deck 3), located next to Studio B, with winners earning bragging rights and receiving high fives from strangers the next day throughout the ship. (One passenger on our cruise did a surprisingly good rendition of "Under the Sea" from "The Little Mermaid.")

The Liberty of the Seas Casino Royale (Deck 4), featuring a mural depicting old Hollywood celebrities is chock-full of nearly 300 slot machines and 19 gaming tables, including blackjack, craps, roulette, Caribbean stud, Texas Hold'em and three-card poker. Slot and blackjack tournaments, plus bingo are offered. Smoking is permitted in the casino.

Occasionally there are dance parties scheduled in the Liberty of the Seas Promenade (Deck 5) or late-night adult comedy in the Platinum Theatre (Deck 3). Dance into the wee hours with DJ dance music up high at Olive or Twist (Deck 14).

Liberty of the Seas Bars

On Air Club (Deck 3, forward):  This fun space has a slightly retro-futuristic vibe, with blue walls that are covered with quotes from songsters from the past, and there's a stage that plays host to undiscovered passenger talent during the always-popular karaoke nights. During the day, passengers can play Wii games here, but it's probably the emptiest bar you'll find during that time.

Boleros (Deck 4, aft):  Stunning blown-glass artwork frames the interior of this bar, while oversized porthole windows make it an ideal location for watching the ship pull into or out of port while enjoying a cocktail. At night, salsa and jazz bands inspire passengers to test out the small dance floor.

Schooner Bar (Deck 4, forward):  Located just outside the casino, this nautical-themed bar with a mermaid figurehead, ropes and sails, tends to be a quieter bar during the day, and usually the meeting location for trivia and family games. At night, it's transformed into a sometimes-raucous piano bar.

Vintages (Deck 5, midship):  This cozy, elegant wine bar located on the Promenade features a WineStation, which keeps open bottles fresh for tasting. Wine tasting events (including blind tastings) are frequently offered here, and you can always order flights, paired with tapas, cheese or charcuterie.

Hoof and Claw Pub (Deck 5, midship):  You'll feel like you've gone to an English pub with the dark wood tones, old-fashioned benches, vintage-looking glass lamps and pub chairs, which complete the backdrop for your Caribbean pub crawl. Beer tasting events are scheduled often at the Hoof and Claw on Liberty of the Seas.

R Bar (Deck 5, aft):  Formerly styled as a Champagne bar, and conveniently located between the Promenade and the dining rooms, this was one of our favorite places to grab a glass of wine before or after dinner. It's statement furniture pieces give it a fresh feel.

Star Lounge (Deck 5, forward):  Black, white and gold accents give a sophisticated Art Deco vibe to this lounge, which has a stage and a large number of couches and chairs. This is where you'll find bingo, as well as the Captain's Corner (your chance to ask the captain and crew all your burning cruise-related questions) and a few game shows.

The Plaza Bar (Deck 11, aft):  This is the bar located directly at the entrance to the buffet dining area, between the specialty restaurants. In the morning, you'll find specialty coffees and fresh-squeezed orange juice for sale here, but you can also order sake and tea, as well as regular bar drinks, the rest of the day.

Pool Bar (Deck 11, midship):  The go-to poolside drink spot during the day serves frozen cocktails and buckets of beer.

Squeeze (Deck 11, aft):  A pint-sized cheerfully colored bar located near the children's pool area serves fresh juices, smoothies and shakes.

Sky Bar (Deck 12, midship):  Offering the same drinks as the Pool Bar, this is located one deck above, with a view of the pool and all the activities.

Viking Crown Lounge (Deck 14, aft):  An expansive space offering great views of the pool decks below from atop the ship, the Viking Crown Lounge on Liberty of the Seas was always fairly quiet and empty during the day. At night in the Olive or Twist bar area, a DJ spins tunes for adults to dance the night away. This area is also home to the Liberty of the Seas Diamond Club and Suite Lounge.

Liberty of the Seas Drink Packages

There is no shortage of bars, lounges and clubs here, and passengers expecting to have more than a couple of sodas, beers or drinks will be better off purchasing one of the Liberty of the Seas drink packages. Options run the gamut from the all-inclusive Deluxe package – which includes most cocktails and beers and is the only alcohol package on Liberty of the Seas – to water-only packages. In between those two, the Classic Soda includes unlimited soda, while the Refreshment adds mocktails, fresh fruit juices, upgraded coffees and teas, and still and sparkling water.

Public Rooms

Liberty of the seas pools.

The Liberty of the Seas pool deck has three main areas, all located on Deck 11. Midship is the main pool, with large hot tubs situated along the outer edges and a large movie screen. It can get fairly loud here. There's a spacious shallow ledge in the pool for lounging in the water with a beverage, as well as a small stage where musicians play and the cruise director's staff keeps the crowds entertained. There are several cascading deck tiers with lounge chairs (some reserved only for suite guests), but we never found it terribly hard to find a chair.

At the ship's forward is the Liberty of the Seas adult-only pool area, for passengers ages 16 and up. This pool also has a ledge for lounging, as well as a bridge spanning its width; we're not sure what function this served, as we rarely saw anyone walking on it, but it did provide some shade for people in the pool.

Inside the Liberty of the Seas Solarium on either side of the deck hanging out over the sides of the ship, you'll find two half-moon-shaped hot tubs. There are also porch swings set up here -- almost always occupied. Because the Solarium is enclosed in glass, we found this area to be slightly warmer than the other pool areas, which benefited from the ocean breeze, but it was a relaxing kid-free space where we could have spent hours.

At the ship's aft is the kids' pool. If you have an "in-between" kid like ours, who is not quite big enough for the slides at the back of the ship, you'll be grateful for the water features here, including a dump bucket and two slides (kids must be 42 inches for the smaller purple slide and 45 inches for the yellow slide), plus various water cannons and splashing areas. For even smaller ones, the Liberty of the Seas Splashaway Bay is located nearby and has fun water features. Royal Caribbean has a policy that only permits potty-trained kids in the pools (no swim diapers), but in the splash pad area, swim diapers are OK.

Note that all the outdoor areas along the port side are designated smoking areas on Liberty of the Seas.

Liberty of the Seas FlowRider, Water Slides and Tidal Wave

Liberty of the Seas polished up its recreational offerings during a 2016 refurbishment with the addition of several water slides. From the thrilling slides at the back of the ship to miniature golf to the rock wall, sports court and a  FlowRider surf simulator , there's plenty of fun to be had.

The Tidal Wave on Liberty of the Seas is a steel slide designed for a two-person tube; it starts out with a steep drop that brings you uphill over the ocean, only to boomerang you backward before bringing you to a final stop. Rarely does a water ride get our hearts pounding, but this one definitely did. We screamed so loudly, we think the whole ship could hear us.

Next to this slide are orange and green spiral slides, the Cyclone and the Typhoon that extend over the port side of the ship. These are much gentler in comparison to the Tidal Wave, but they are still great fun. The green slide offers a slightly faster racing experience and has dizzying colored lights throughout the interior.

Tip: The Liberty of the Seas slides are popular, particularly at midday, so try getting there first thing in the morning after they open to avoid lines. There are height and weight restrictions on these slides (minimum height of 48 inches for Cyclone and Typhoon and maximum weight of 300 pounds; for Tidal Wave, 52 inches is the minimum height, and there's a minimum/maximum weight of 75/280 pounds, and minimum/maximum combined weight for both riders of 200/450 pounds.) A scale is conveniently located near the base of the slides for you to check.

The Liberty of the Seas FlowRider is a great way to get your feet wet with surfing without getting in the ocean. Surfing lessons are offered throughout the week for a fee, as well. Also located in this area are the sports court and the Liberty of the Seas rock-climbing wall. Check your Cruise Compass for games and open times.

One of the best ways we found to spend a morning together as a family was at Liberty Dunes, the free Liberty of the Seas mini golf course on Deck 13. This whimsical nine-hole course featured a bus, giant seashells, a lighthouse and other obstacles.

Sun Decks on Liberty of the Seas

Sun worshippers can grab a chair anywhere on Deck 12, overlooking the pool area. And there are three tiers of reserved seats for passengers in suites. A gold SeaPass card will gain you access to these chairs located near the Sky Bar. For a quieter experience, climb up to Deck 13, either forward or aft, where you'll find plentiful banks of unreserved chairs, either in the shade or in the sun.

Royal Promenade on Liberty of the Seas

Most of your necessities you'll find arranged on the Royal Promenade on Deck 5, starting with Guest Services and Shore Excursions. There are several retail stores lined up here, mall-style, for clothing, jewelry, perfume, liquor and souvenirs. Depending on the special running that day, you may see long lines of shoppers in the Promenade waiting for the sales to start. Also on the Royal Promenade is Next Cruise, a storefront exclusively staffed to book passengers' next RCI cruise (with occasional incentives available for booking while onboard).

Services and Wi-Fi on Liberty of the Seas

The photo gallery is located on Deck 4. There small library located on Deck 9 was fairly vacant throughout the cruise, given the prevalence of smartphones and tablets onboard.

Royal Caribbean's Wi-Fi service, called VOOM, allows passengers to surf or stream online content with a per day, per device fee (rates depend on the speed you want). Quantity discounts are available for more than one device. We found the internet speeds to be inconsistent throughout our cruise, with some days much slower than others, so keep in mind that your mileage may vary.

There are no self-serve launderettes onboard, and the wash-and-fold Liberty of the Seas laundry packages are on the pricy side, so bear that in mind while packing.

The ship has touch screens located near the stairwells to help guide passengers through the ship, as well as view the day's scheduled activities from the Cruise Compass.

Spa & Fitness

Liberty of the seas spa.

Upon check-in for your treatment at the spa (Deck 12, Forward), you'll be seated in a waiting room with zebra print carpet, modern yellow art on the walls and oversized leather chairs. There are 17 treatment rooms on this level, in addition to a hair salon.

Examples of services include a 50-minute facial and massage combo, a 75-minute Thai herbal poultice massage, or a couples’ bathing ritual with full body massage. Botox, acupuncture and teeth whitening treatments are also on the menu. For men, there are a variety of grooming services, such as a deep cleanse grooming treatment with shave. Your teen can join you at the spa with treatments designed for him or her, marketed as "YSpa," such as the Acne Attack facial and the Sole Mate pedicure.

A spiral staircase in the center of the reception area leads down to the Liberty of the Seas gym.

Liberty of the Seas Fitness Center

A light-filled space with floor-to-ceiling windows is almost enough enticement on its own to get you to the gym on vacation (almost). The spacious interior is stocked with free weights, Life Fitness weight machines and cardio machines. There's a studio space for group classes, such as Fab Abs (free), and spin class and Pilates for an extra charge.

Also inside the fitness center you'll find a spacious, cream-colored locker room stocked with fresh towels and separate steam and sauna rooms.

The fitness center is open daily. Passengers 16 and up can use the gym; ages 13 to 15 are permitted with a parent or guardian and a signed liability waiver.

For walkers, joggers and runners, you can get in your oceanside laps on the track on Deck 11 — four laps equal a mile. But keep in mind that the later your start in the morning, the more people you'll have to dodge in the process of working up a sweat.

Is Liberty of the Seas Family Friendly?

The children's programming aboard Liberty of the Seas was among the best we have experienced, and several families we spoke to with kids of different ages echoed the same thoughts. Kids can spend most of the day having organized fun in Adventure Ocean starting at 3 years old, and programming and exclusive spaces for teens are also available.

Liberty of the Seas also offers a variety of family-friendly accommodations, including the Royal Family Suites and Family Ocean View staterooms.

For children younger than 3 (and who are not potty trained), the Royal Babies and Tots Nursery offers childcare for an hourly rate, which can be billed partially if you don't fully use your time. The Liberty of the Seas nursery offers various age-appropriate toys, cribs and rocking chairs for fussy babies. Food will be provided to your child (you can also provide your own). You must provide your own diapers and wipes.

Infants must be six months old to cruise on Royal Caribbean (12 months old for certain destinations), and children must be potty trained to attend Adventure Ocean (no pullups allowed). There's also a cruise line policy that children must be potty trained to swim in any of the pools -- swim diapers are not allowed. In Liberty's Splashaway Bay water park, swim diapers are acceptable, and they are sold in the onboard gift shop. You can order diapers, wipes and other baby supplies to be delivered to your room before the cruise. Note: Diapers are otherwise not sold onboard, so order ahead, bring plenty along with you or prepare to stock up in port.

Liberty of the Seas Adventure Ocean Kids’ Club

Liberty offers kids' programming at Adventure Ocean for ages 3 to 11 in the following groups: Aquanauts (3-5), Explorers (6-8) and Voyagers (9-11). The home bases for these programs are all on Deck 12, past the Liberty of the Seas arcade, inside windowed rooms that are stocked with toys and supplies to inspire movement and creativity (though to be honest, they don't look all that exciting at first).

If you have children in these age groups, you'll receive a Kids Daily Planner alongside your Cruise Compass delivered to your stateroom each night. This planner details the kinds of activities that your kids can attend throughout the day. Hours of operation are generally: morning session from 9 a.m. to noon; afternoon session from 2 to 5 p.m.; and evening session from 7 to 10 p.m. On port days, these hours get extended to provide childcare for families who don't want to disembark with their children.

There is also a Late Night Party Zone on select nights from 10 p.m. to midnight for a per-hour fee (including one activity called "Trash the Room"). And on formal dinner nights, you can sign your child up to have dinner (for free) with the Adventure Ocean crew if you'd like.

As an example of some of the planned activities, a morning session for the Aquanauts might include: face painting, arts and crafts and a game of "Catch the Crocodile." In the afternoon, they might play Color Bingo, I Spy and do another craft. In the evening, they might explore games that involve pretending to be doctors or nurses, have a story time or do a fitness challenge.

Explorers might have daily activities like toilet paper football, LEGO challenge and Adventure Science experiments. Check-in and check-out were quick and easy, and after just a day or two, several staff members knew our child's name.

The Voyagers group enjoys similar activities to the Explorers, with a slightly bigger emphasis on team sports. Voyagers can sign themselves in and out only on sea days, with parental approval.

Kids seemed to enjoy the programming, including our son. It's always a good sign when your kid begs to go to the kids' club.

Teens and Tweens on Liberty of the Seas

Liberty of the Seas also provides programming to teens 12 to 14 and 15 to 17 (18-year-olds are not permitted). There are two exclusive teen-only areas. The Living Room is a hangout featuring funky high-backed chairs, televisions and Wii games. In the evening, the action moves to Fuel, where a DJ keeps the dance floor interesting. There are also regular pizza parties.

Organized activities include games like scavenger hunts, basketball competitions, air hockey tournaments, video game competitions and movie nights at the pool. Crafts, like homemade slime, decorating bandanas and scrapbooking also are scheduled throughout the cruise.

Aside from that, teens are pretty adept at finding their own fun throughout the ship's pools, water slides, sports court or FlowRider. A cheesy Royal Caribbean-produced TV show called "Royal Crush," featuring a lovestruck teenage couple whose young love blossoms through myriad cruise activities, airs on stateroom televisions and elicits a few chuckles among the too-cool-for-school crowd. Full disclosure: We were hooked on this show.

Travel | fdle confirms investigation involving orlando-area rep. amesty, things to do, subscriber only, travel | entertainment revealed for port canaveral-bound utopia of the seas.

The Utopia of the Seas will feature an 80s-themed show in its AquaTheater. (Courtesy/Royal Caribbean)

The sixth of Royal’s Oasis-class ships and currently the second-largest ship in the world behind Miami’s Icon of the Seas, Utopia of the Seas will begin sailing three- and four-night Bahamas itineraries starting July 19.

The cruise line this week revealed the names of the spate of entertainment coming on board including the title shows for its AquaTheater, ice rink Studio B and the main stage Royal Theater.

Aqua80Too, a sequel to an existing 1980s-themed show, will be the offering at the popular AquaTheater found at the aft of the vessel. The shows combine high-diving, aerobatics, music, dancing and a water-and-light show.

The Studio B ice skating rink will be home to a show called “Youtopia,” although details of what it will entail were not revealed.

While no licensed Broadway show is hitting the main stage in the Royal Theater, a show titled “All In,” an original production that promised to be “high-tech” is on tap. Previous shows in the main theater have taken advantage of drone technology, laser lights and suspension wires.

Other entertainment offerings coming to the ship include an adults-only scavenger hunt called “Crazy Quest,” a game show concept called “Majority Rules,” as well as others called “Battle of the Sexes” and “Friendly Feud,” and a comedy club shows.

The ship will also offer up 10 parties like a silent disco, toga event and karaoke among its sundry pool decks and dance clubs, as well as live music at nine of its bars and lounges.

The cruise line is betting on the short Bahamas voyages with its newest hardware in a combination approach its calling the “ultimate short getaway,” selling the ship as much as the primary destination — private island Little Stirrup Cay — which the line has redubbed Perfect Day at CocoCay.

The popular stop features a water park with 14 waterslides and a massive wave pool, the largest freshwater pool in the Caribbean and Bahamas, and a new adults-only area called Hideaway Beach.

Utopia is taking over the short sailing duties from Allure of the Seas, which began sailing from Port Canaveral last fall as part of Royal’s double-dip approach with Oasis-class ships from the Orlando-area port as Wonder of the Seas continues the longer seven-night sailings.

Royal Caribbean's Utopia of the Seas sails from the Chantiers...

As the sixth Oasis-class vessel, Utopia of the Seas is 236,860 gross tons and 1,188 feet long with 18 decks and a 5,668-passenger capacity based on double occupancy. Oasis of the Seas was the largest in the world when it debuted in 2009 followed by 2010’s Allure of the Seas, 2016’s Harmony of the Seas, 2018’s Symphony of the Seas and 2022’s Wonder of the Seas.

All but Symphony have spent some time calling Port Canaveral home, and the Oasis class has only been outsized by the new Icon class after Icon of the Seas’ debut in January.

Utopia of the Seas will hold onto the No. 2 spot on the world’s-largest-cruise-ship list until Icon of the Seas’ sister ship Star of the Seas debuts in 2025. Star of the Seas is also headed to Port Canaveral, which has been landing more new ship debuts in the last few years.

Among recent vessels to call on Port Canaveral in their first year of sailing have been Wonder of the Seas, Norwegian Prima, Disney Wish and Carnival’s Mardi Gras.

Royal took possession of Utopia of the Seas last week at a ceremony in Saint-Nazaire, France — home to the Chantiers de l’Atlantique shipyard where the ship has been under construction since 2022. It’s the first of the Oasis-class vessels to run on the cleaner-burning fuel — liquefied natural gas. It will be the third LNG-fueled ship to call Port Canaveral home after Disney Wish and Carnival’s Mardi Gras.

“Taking delivery of Utopia of the Seas is an incredibly important milestone, as it marks yet another evolution of our game-changing ships and our mission to create the best vacation experiences responsibly,” said Jason Liberty, president and CEO of the cruise line’s parent company, Royal Caribbean Group.

The ship still has a month to complete final touches before it welcomes its first paying guests. It is tentatively slated to arrive at Port Canaveral on July 11, after which it will sail some shakedown cruises with employees and media.

“There will be probably a weeklong of festivities that Royal Caribbean will be handling when the ship first arrives,” Port Canaveral CEO Capt. John Murray said at the port’s May commission meeting. “This is a big arrival for them — first time a brand new ship of this size is going into a three- and four-day rotation.”

While carved up into neighborhoods like its sister ships, including the open-air Central Park in the middle of the ship and Jersey Shore-themed Boardwalk at the aft, it does feature some unique items.

New cruise line dining experiences make you forget you’re on a cruise

That includes the themed dining experience Royal Railway – Utopia Station, an extra-cost experience that on its debut will be themed to the Old West with a theatrical performance alongside high-definition digital projections, sounds and seats that shake like a moving train.

The ship also sports the longest-ever of the popular dry slide The Ultimate Abyss, that runs for 259 feet in a twisting 10-deck drop equipped with new rollers within the tube to make riders go even faster than the slides on sister ships.

One new drink venue replacing the Bionic Bar is the Caribbean-themed Pesky Parrot.

Other features similar to its sister ships include the three-slide Perfect Storm water park; three Lime & Coconut bars among five pools on its top decks; a FlowRider surf simulator; zip line; adults-only Solarium; Utopia Playscape for kids; and kids aqua park Splashaway Bay.

Multiple dining options include Giovanni’s Italian Kitchen & Wine Bar taking the two-deck space Wonderland has on sister ships, and allowing for an al fresco Gio’s Terrazza that overlooks the Boardwalk. The ship will also have the Izumi in the Park pickup window for quick service sushi and Japanese-inspired street food in Central Park.

It’s also going to be the second home to popular Mason Jar Southern Restaurant & Bar that debuted on Wonder of the Seas.

“With the delivery of Utopia of the Seas, we have the keys to the ultimate weekend,” cruise line President and CEO Michael Bayley said. “This is the short vacation that packs every way to make amazing memories. … Vacationers want every minute to be a minute well spent and the unmatched combination of Utopia and Perfect Day at CocoCay will deliver that.”
